Service NSW now in Glenmore Park

RESIDENTS of Glenmore Park and surrounding suburbs no longer have to travel outside their local community to visit a Service NSW Centre, with a Centre now open at the Glenmore Park Town Centre.

Tanya Davies MP, Member for Badgerys Creek, toured the new Centre this week and said that she is pleased that her election commitment to deliver a Glenmore Park Service NSW Centre has been fulfilled.

“Establishing a Service NSW Centre in Glenmore Park was a vision of mine that I promised the community and I’m thrilled that families can now conveniently access in-person essential services,” Mrs Davies said. “I strongly advocated for the Centre as we navigated through the challenges of the pandemic and finding a suitable location,” she stated.

“I’ll continue to hold Labor to account to ensure Western Sydney families continue to have access to the types of rebates and vouchers that the previous Coalition prioritised to ease the cost of living pressures,” Mrs Davies stated.

At a Service NSW Centre, individuals can renew or transfer their registration, get a working with children check, get a license for driving different vehicles, find rebates, savings and so much more.

Vale Colin Michael Kelson

IHAVE had the privilege of knowing Colin Kelson, or Pussa to his friends for a very long time. The word hero is used a lot these days, but it’s people like Col who truly deserve that title.

Col joined the Navy in 1964. During his service at sea he served on the HMAS VAMPIRE and VENDETTA, doing troop convoy escort duty to Vietnam and performing diving operations in Vung Tau harbour against saboteurs.

On the VAMPIRE and VENDETTA and on another two tours on the HMAS STALWART he was deployed to the Far East Strategic Reserve, a warlike theatre of operations.

In 1970 Col was awarded the Fleet Commander’s Commendation for Bravery in respect of his actions as part of the ship’s diving team attempting to salvage a ditched helicopter in rough seas off Jervis Bay on the 13 November 1969.

Col was also deployed to Darwin on the TORRENS during the Indonesian/ Timor crisis.

Col completed his engagement and was discharged holding the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1976.

He was awarded the Australian Active Service Medal with clasp, Australian Logistic Support Medal, Australian Service Medal and clasp, and the Australian Defence Medal.

Upon his return to Sydney, after serving his country, Col then decided to serve his community and joined the NSW Police Force in 1976. He became an accredited Police Rescue Operator. For the next 15 years Col performed many dangerous and hazardous rescue operations in the western Sydney Region.

In 1987 he was awarded the Commissioners Commendation for Bravery for outstanding devotion to Duty and meritorious actions involved in the rescue of four persons

at Plumpton and two persons at Mount Druitt.

In 1991 he was awarded the Commissioners Commendation for Valour ( the highest award for Bravery in the NSW Police Force) for the attempted rescue of a man trapped in a submerged vehicle amid floodwaters in Toongabbie creek. He was also awarded the Toyota Australia Award which recognises meritorious acts of bravery by a member of the Police Rescue Squad, Water Police or Air Wing for his extreme bravery in the rescue event.

In 1994 while still serving as a Police Officer, Col joined the Blacktown State Emergency Service, sharing his skills and knowledge with a whole new cohort. He operated as a supervisor and instructor and was involved in many operations of note, including the Eastern Suburbs storms, Blacktown/ Mt Druitt storms and the Central Coast emergency in 2007.

Col was awarded the 2nd and 3rd clasp to the National medal Commissioners Unit citation for service and the SES Long Service Medal.

Col was fearless in the execution of his duties. I remember spending a long cold rainy night with Col, at the flooded intersection of the Kingsway in St Marys, jumping off the back of a flat deck truck searching for two children who had been washed away. Col refused to give up, kept diving into the water, searching , even though we knew it was too late.

For almost 60 years, Colin Kelson served his country and his community. He committed acts of outstanding bravery, risking his life many times to save others, he was a leader, a mentor and a great friend and he was a hero.

On behalf of our City I extend our condolences to his wife Ann, son Robert and his wife Avril and their son Maxwell, to Colin’s daughter Christine, son in law Glen and grand daughter Leah and to the youngest daughter Catherine.

Rest Easy Pussa, your work here is done. Rest in Peace.

Celebrating midwives at Nepean

INTERNATIONAL Day of the Midwife was a perfect time to recognise the incredible work and dedication of our midwives at Nepean Hospital.

One midwife in particular, Madeline Boyce brings passion and a fresh perspective to her role at Nepean Hospital.

With four years of experience as a registered nurse, Madeline decided to take the leap into a new career in midwifery. Her decision to upskill was fuelled by a pivotal experience during

her nursing rotation on a postnatal ward, where she discovered her calling to support women through the transformative journey of motherhood.

“Most women will remember the midwife that was there for them when they delivered their baby. I think that’s such a memorable role, which makes me feel really inspired to come to work every day,” said Madeline.

Madeline encourages others who are considering a career in midwifery to take the leap.

“It’s such a great profession that can be so versatile, enabling you to work in your area of interest,” said Madeline.

Prue Car MP: NSW welcomes $1.9b investment

THE NSW Government welcomes the $1.9 billion federal investment and says it is a “boost recognising the significance of Western Sydney as the fastest growing region in Australia.”

“Continued federal investment in the region will improve quality of life for Western Sydney families and expand access to new jobs growing out of development opportunities around the Western Sydney Airport Precinct,” Deputy Premier Prue Car said.

“This funding underlines the importance of supporting growth in Western Sydney and builds on joint investments by NSW and federal governments in road and transport projects across the region.

“Key project funding detail includes:

The new $500 million federal investment in Mamre Road Stage 2

will add to the $253.6 million already allocated by the NSW Government for Stage 1 of the project.

“A $400 million federal investment to deliver priority sections of Elizabeth Drive upgrade. This builds on the NSW Government’s $200 million commitment for Elizabeth Drive safety and enabling works.

“A further $115 million federal government commitment for Mulgoa Road Stage 2 will allow the NSW Government to move ahead with upgrades to the pinch point.

The new $500 million federal investment for Richmond Road, Garfield Road and Memorial Avenue will support the NSW Government’s existing $385m commitment.

“A $100 million federal investment to deliver new infrastructure to support bus services to the WSI airport.

A $20 million federal investment to support the delivery of the final business case for Stage 1 of the Western Sydney Freight Line.

“The NSW Government also welcomes federal funding to continue vital projects such as Appin Road,

Spring Farm Parkway and bus infrastructure for the future Western Sydney Airport.

“Today’s announcement is a game changer for Western Sydney. It builds on hundreds of millions of dollars invested by NSW to deliver overdue precinct roads that will meet the existing needs of local residents, while unlocking development and new places for people to work and live.

“We have developers ready to transform the region into modern employment, education and housing zones which are planned to attract 250,000 people.

“This announcement will give investors the confidence they are looking for from government to begin making those plans a reality,” Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said.

‘We are not fooled” says Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh

FEDERAL Member Melissa McIntosh MP has released the following statement regarding the infrastructure announcement.

“Albanese Labor Government tries to hoodwink Western Sydney -returned infrastructure funding that was cut by labor is not new funding.”

“Following pressure, the Albanese Government has today backflipped on $1.9 billion of infrastructure funding they cut from Western Sydney roads, including in the electorate of Lindsay.

“Some of the projects across Western Sydney originally identified and funded by the former Coalition Government as part of the $120 billion 10-year infrastructure pipeline, were cut by the Labor Government, then ‘repackaged’ and today announced as ‘new funding’.

“The restoration of funding is welcome but let’s call this out for what it is. The Albanese Labor Government

cut funding for roads across Western Sydney. We fought for this funding to be returned. Now, funding has been reinstated because along with the community, we put the pressure on, as did the media. This is not new and exciting money to make Western Sydney Roads better, it is purely the funding we deserve. And we deserve more.

“Infrastructure Minister Catherine King is expecting Western Sydney to be grateful for the Government reinstating projects she cut. Once again Catherine King is trying to hoodwink the Western Sydney community.

“The Minister today has said the Government was focused on fixing up “the mess”, but it was Labor who created this mess in the first place. These cuts, delays and confusion also come at a financial cost to the Australian taxpayer.

“The Albanese Government has done nothing but remove funding and provide uncertainty to almost 3 million Western Sydney residents. One of the projects Labor has announced today, Mulgoa Road –Stage 2, in my electorate of Lindsay, was cut by the Government following its Infrastructure Review.

“The re-funding announcement comes with around half the money cut. Where is the rest of the funding for this project?

“The Albanese Labor Government has shown they don’t care about our community, and not listened to the Western Sydney Infrastructure Review Panel. Minister King has refused to reinstate projects that the expert Review Panel listed as a high priority. It’s all just politics for this Government.

“The people of Western Sydney are not going to be fooled by this stunt.

There is no trust the Albanese Labor Government won’t just break their promise again if they are re-elected.”

Penrith City Council supports National Road Safety Week, 5-12 May

PENRITH City Council, as a key supporter and promoter of this year’s National Road Safety Week, is encouraging residents to take a pledge to ‘Drive So That Others Survive!’

National Road Safety Week (5-12 May 2024) is an annual initiative led by the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group that aims to shine a light on the impact of road trauma and to advocate for measures to reduce accidents on our roads.

Between 2018-2022, there were 2,360 crashes recorded in the Penrith Local Government Area. More than 500 people were seriously injured in these accidents, and 27 lives were lost as a result.

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said that by promoting responsible

driving behaviours, increasing awareness about the consequences of reckless driving, and advocating for infrastructure improvements, we can work together to make our roads safer for everyone.

“Each year National Road Safety

Week serves as a reminder that road safety is everyone’s responsibility. By driving cautiously, respecting traffic laws, and looking out for one another, we can prevent unnecessary tragedies and ensure that every journey ends safely,” Cr Carney said.

“We’ll be sharing important information about road safety throughout National Road Safety Week, as part of our commitment to making our roads safer for everyone and reducing the number of deaths and injuries on our roads.

“Together, we can make a real difference and save lives on our roads. Let’s commit to being safer road users and working towards a future with zero road fatalities,” Cr Carney added. Join us in supporting National Road Safety Week by spreading awareness and pledging to drive safely for the sake of others. Let’s Drive So Others Survive!

Rotary FONE the Angels of the Emergency Department

VISITING

the Emergency Department (ED) at Nepean Hospital can sometimes be a lonely, intimidating and frightening experience, especially if you’ve attended for a potentially life-altering ailment or injury.

However, a group of volunteers, consisting of members of the Rotary Club of the Lower Blue Mountains and community members, are on hand to offer assistance where possible, whether in the way of warm blankets, refreshments, magazines, clothing and toiletries (toothpaste / toothbrush), or even just a listening ear for adult patients. The volunteers even help find hearing aids, glasses, fill hot water bottles, show the location of toilets - really anything and everything.

The Friends of Nepean Emergency (Rotary FONE) volunteers primary aim is to cater for children of all ages, whether they are patients, siblings or children of visitors, providing activity books / pages, crayons / pencils, stickers, teddy bears and pocket pals for comfort and / or distraction.

Beginning in 2018, Rotary FONE

has been operating at Nepean Hospital, apart from a break due to COVID from 2020 - 2023. Even then, Rotary FONE members actively packed baskets of food (meals, snacks, fruit) and delivered them to hospital staff living nearby to a Rotary FONE member, for transport to the hospital for the staff to enjoy.

There are currently 16 active volunteers in the Rotary FONE setup, with 10 being Rotarians (or their partners) and 6 community members. Rotary FONE is very reliant on its community volunteers, who are valuable, reliable, wonderful people.

The Rotary Club of Blue Mountains

opened an Op Shop in Blaxland in 2019 (Rotary Recycles) and get some of the used clothing from the shop to use for patients who require a change of clothes in the ED.

The Rotary Club of the Lower Blue Mountains and Rotary FONE have jointly raised over $60,000 for medical equipment for the ED, including a grant from Rotary International for the Baby Resuscitation Machine and Eye Camera.

Other equipment funded by the Rotary Club and Rotary FONE are BMI Scales for children and Intubation equipment.

Rotary FONE is always on the

lookout for volunteers who are outgoing or have experience or history regarding interaction with others. Volunteers from Rotary FONE work in the ED 5 days per week in pairs, on 2-hour shifts. Volunteers can choose their own level of involvement, from weekly, fortnightly or monthly, depending upon their personal commitments.

Fittingly, Rotary FONE has received several letters and certificates of appreciation from Nepean Emergency, in recognition of the valuable time, service and support its volunteers provide to Nepean Hospital.

Mayor of Blacktown passes away on flight home

AS I sat at my desk to write this week’s Editor’s column for our Blacktown publication, Western News, the last thing I expected to be writing is that the Mayor of the city has passed away.

Sadly, whilst on a delegation to China, Blacktown Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM passed away during the flight home.

The news has come as such a shock to us all and the team here at Nepean and Western News would like to extend our condolences to Tony’s family, friends and his colleagues at Blacktown Council.

Mayor Bleadale’s untimely passing has no doubt left a void in the hearts of all who knew him and the wider Blacktown community. His passion for serving the people and nurturing the growth of Blacktown was evident in every initiative he undertook. Whether it was spearheading community projects or advocating for anyone disadvantaged, Mayor Bleadale was always a fair and dedicated leader.

The Mayor’s vision was always for a more inclusive Blacktown. His memory will live on in the countless lives he touched and the positive changes he brought about in this area.

Rest in peace, Tony. You will be profoundly missed, but never forgotten.

$230 million to improve NSW domestic violence prevention and support

THE NSW Government will provide $230 million over four years as part of an emergency package to enhance support for domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) victim-survivors and expand programs that reduce the rate of violence against women and children.

Nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 8 men in Australia have experienced violence by an intimate partner or family member since the age of 15.

The NSW Labor Government is taking urgent action to address the unacceptable rate of violence against women and children, including implementation of NSW’s first dedicated Primary Prevention Strategy – a new step in NSW’s approach to preventing DFSV.

The Government will also undertake further long-term reform to prevent domestic, sexual and family violence in NSW.

This work will be informed by the lived experience of victim-survivors and expert advice to government, including from leaders in the domestic family and sexual violence sector who engaged directly with the NSW Cabinet last week.

The package includes: Crisis Response

1. $48m to roll out the Staying Home Leaving Violence (SHLV) program state-wide and to expand the Integrated Domestic and Family Violence Service (IDFVS).

1. The Staying Home Leaving Violence program helps women

and their children to remain safe in their homes after leaving a violent relationship. In 2022, a formal evaluation from the Gendered Violence Research Network at the University of NSW found this program effectively contributes to the long-term safety and housing stability of women and children who have left a violent and abusive relationship.

2. The Integrated Domestic and Family Violence Service provides important case management, helping people to navigate the services of government agencies and nongovernment organisations. This can include coordinating across police, courts, healthcare, child protection

workers, housing providers and women’s refuges. The program works with both victim-survivors who have left a relationship and those who remain, focusing on maximising safety for this group of women and their children.

Improving the Justice System for Victims

2. $45 million has been set aside to improve bail laws and justice system responses to domestic violence with measures to be announced in coming weeks.

3. Nearly $24 million for specialist DV support workers within the justice system.

4. $2 million over four years to support the Domestic Violence Death Review Team and its work to deliver robust research around risks factors, trends and impact of service delivery.

5. $2.1 million over two years to improve and continue the Corrective Services program EQUIPS Domestic and Family Violence, delivered to offenders in custody and under supervision in the community to prevent reoffending.

Early Intervention

1. $48 million to secure and increase funding for workers who

support children accompanying their mothers to refuges. These specialist workers support them, including with education and mental health measures.

2. Support of $700,000 for the NSW Domestic Violence Line (DV line).

Primary Prevention

1. $38 million for the implementation of NSW’s first dedicated Primary Prevention Strategy. The Pathways to Prevention: NSW Strategy for the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence 2024-2027 will develop a range of initiatives to address the drivers of domestic, family and sexual violence.

2. $8.1 million over four years for the ‘All in’ early childhood pilot, to prevent domestic violence by teaching young children about healthy relationships.

Strengthening the Sector

1. $5 million for workforce training on the implementation of a newly developed risk assessment framework, and quality standards.

2. $3.6 million to expand Domestic Violence NSW (DVNSW), which is the peak body for specialist services in New South Wales.

Research

1. $5m in funding for research into perpetrators and effective interventions.

“There is no excuse for family and domestic violence. Every person has the right to feel safe and protected in their own home. No friend, parent, colleague, relative, or child should have to worry or stress over their mental and physical safety. This funding will allow us to expand and improve programs that stop cycles of violence, including by reducing reoffending,” said Penrith MP Karen McKeown OAM.

If you or someone you know is affected by domestic, family or sexual violence, please call the toll-free number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for support on 1800RESPECT or visit 1800respect.org.au

Addressing knife-crime in the wake of horrific events

THE alarming surge in knifecrime this year has instilled fear and anxiety in the community, prompting calls for urgent action from law enforcement agencies and policymakers.

The NSW Government has announced a package of what they call “common-sense reforms” to target possession of knives, particularly among young people and reduce knife crime and boost community safety.

The government will:

• Develop legislation modelled on Queensland’s Jack’s Law which will give police powers to “wand” or “scan” people for knives without a warrant in designated areas, including transport hubs, shopping centres and other crowded places:

- these powers will be made available in circumstances where a relevant weapons offence/ knife crime has occurred within the past 6 months

- an authority can then be issued by police, enabling them to “wand” or “scan” people, and - the authority will last for 12 hours, with an option to extend as required.

• Make it illegal to sell knives to a child under the age of 18, with provisions for exemptions for retailers selling to young people who need a knife for their work or study.

• Increase penalties for people selling knives to young people under the age of 18.

Premier Chris Minns said the package of reforms will help address knife-related crime, get knives off streets and keep the community safer.

The new “wanding” laws will be based on Jack’s Law and adapted for the NSW context with details

being finalised ahead of legislation to be introduced to parliament.

Their aim will be to keep the community safe, targeting areas where there have been increasing issues related to knife crime or knife possession offences, which could be on public transport or in nightlife, entertainment, or shopping precincts.

“The reforms send a strong message about the seriousness of knife related violence and the NSW Government’s commitment to take immediate proactive steps to prevent future tragedies, whilst also addressing longer term challenges such as serious mental health issues and the broader incidence of violent crime,” Premier Chris Minns said.

“In recent weeks and months, we have all borne witness to the devastating outcomes of knife related violence.

What can we do to protect ourselves

EVIDENTLY, the Police and the NSW Government are focussed on addressing knife crime in our state. But the tragic event in Bondi Junction has many of us asking ourselves what would we do if in that situation? Of course many would fantasise about taking the perpetrator out single-handedly or earning the “Bollard Girl” title; but the reality of being faced with an armed person on a mission is pretty confronting.

We posed the question to local security expert Gina Field, who has owned and operated Nepean Regional Security for 26 years.

“Easier said than done, but try and remain calm at all times would be my first piece of advice,” Gina said.

“Most active attackers are extremely unpredictable and ensure the element of surprise. Most of these attacks can be well pre-planned, however there are also the ones that just take the opportunity for what ever reason.

“Personally and on a business level, it is time to be ready and more aware, not only for individual safety, but the safety of staff.”

Gina believes it is important to pre-plan and educate yourself on your surroundings and whether the site you are at has security, exits, open spaces, and evacuation points.

“It is really important from a business perspective that responding to active attackers is on the training list- particularly in situations of mass gatherings, shopping centres, festivals, and sporting events; however, the more open, the better the prospect of survival is,” Gina said.

Leave if it is safe to do so

“The priority is to get away from the offender the best you can. Next is to attempt, if safe to do so, to leave the site. If possible, use items around you, chairs, banners, tables, or whatever is available for a shield as you evacuate the site.

“If, in the case of a shopping centre, never run with an extreme amount of shopping bags, these will slow you down. Leave the bags behind.

“Turn your phone on silent as soon as possible –a ringing phone is a give away for where you are.”

Hide and take cover

“If you cannot leave safely, find a spot to take cover and hide for your safety. Finding a secure spot with lockable doors is best – never use a fire cabinet or similar because there are no locks on the doors. Continually reassess the situation, to see if you can leave safely.

“Never place yourself in a situation , that you have cornered yourself in with limited escape opportunities.

“Make sure you keep reassessing and please remain calm. Attackers love the look of fear in people, and showing a lack of fear really does put some of them off.

“Only if safe, and the opportunity arises, take the attacker down. This of course is the last resort to save YOUR life – pick up anything to keep the attacker away.

“I know that many in our community have followed the devastating media coverage and heard the stories of victims and families – tragically there have been so many recent examples.

“Our communities are still in mourning, but it’s essential that we step up to take immediate action to send a clear message that NSW will simply not accept these kinds of crimes.

Police target knife crime in Operation Foil

Last month, Operation Foil saw more than 800 officers from every Police Area Command and Police District in NSW, assisted by specialist officers from Youth Command, Police Transport and Public Safety Command and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command target knife crime and anti-social behaviour.

During the high visibility operation 51 knives / weapons were seized with 145 people charged with weapon related offences, including seizure of a firearm.

Detective Superintendent Darren Newman, Operations Manager North-West Metropolitan Region said the aim of Operation Foil was to remove weapons from the streets and make the community safer.

“Operation Foil was established to get these dangerous weapons out of the hands of those individuals who may potentially use them to target other people,” said Det Sup Newman.

“People need to understand that carrying a knife is illegal unless you have a justifiable reason. If you are armed with a knife and become involved in an altercation where someone is injured or even killed, you can face a substantial prison sentence.

“Operations of this nature will continue to be run by police,” said Superintendent Newman.

Report and try and remember as much as you can

“Remember that the Police and authorities have to piece all of the incidents and occurrences together, so the more you can tell them, the better. The times, locations, actions, words, conversations.

“Take note of the time. Usually there is a lot of screaming; what are people saying?

“Where safe to do so, call 000 – give them as much detail as possible, what the attacker looks like, whether they are armed, and what they are screaming out; police need as much detail as possible.

“Be clear, know the address of where you are at, and do this in your pre-planning.”

We all want to get about our business and enjoy life without being on high alert, but as Gina points out, being prepared and knowing your surroundings doesn’t take a lot of time or effort. It is really just being consciously observant. You never know when that could be critically important.

New scholarships for women to build careers in construction

THE Institute of Applied Technology – Construction (IATC) has announced three new microskills to its suite of courses as well as fee-free training places for women.

The Institute is a partnership between TAFE NSW, leading construction company CPB Contractors, and Western Sydney University.

Co-designed with industry experts, microskills are online, bite-sized, self-directed courses. These three new microskills focus on topics critical for building capability in the construction sector now and into the future and include: Introduction to Women in Construction, Introduction to Sustainability in Construction, and The Role of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Construction.

The IATC is also furthering its commitment to encourage more women to kickstart a career in construction or upskill in their current role with the availability of 60 fee-free training places in its microcredential courses. The scholarships come at a time when the construction industry in Australia is facing a shortage of over 100,000 workers.

Applications are now open for the Women in Construction Scholarships, delivered by the Institute of Applied Technology Construction.

CPB Contractors General Manager Infrastructure NSW and ACT, Rob Monaci said, “As the pipeline of infrastructure continues to grow, particularly with the focus on housing and new energy, the need for more skilled workers is an industry-wide issue. We need to be doing more to attract people at all stages of their careers to transition into fulfilling careers in construction, particularly women.”

The microcredentials take eight weeks to complete and provide industry-specific skills recognised as evidence of competence. The microcredentials can be completed online or face-to-face.

Women in Construction Scholarship courses are aimed at high-growth areas and include:

• Project Management Foundations in Construction

• Introduction to Project Scope Management in Construction

• Project Risk Management in Construction

• Stakeholder Engagement and Management in Construction

• Quality Management in Construction

• 2D CAD Drawings and 3D Models in Construction

• Introduction to Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Construction

• Microsoft Office Foundations in Construction; and

• Power BI Fundamentals in Construction

Director Operations Institutes of Applied Technology Helen Fremlin encouraged women interested in a career in construction to take advantage of the free microcredentials and said they promote a practical learning journey.

“Whether you choose online or face-to-face, these microcredentials include regular educator-led sessions. These draw on industry specific examples, tasks, and case studies to give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills directly with the support of educators.

“Part of the eligibility process requires women to complete two microskill courses. Microskills are free, two-hour, self-directed sessions, a great way to help get you started.”

CPB Contractors’ Rob Monaci added, “The introduction of these three new Microskills focused on women, sustainability and BIM are

really exciting as not only are they critical to the future of our industry, but they are also compelling in attracting new entrants to the workforce who are passionate about the role diversity, sustainability and digital technology plays in building the game changing infrastructure projects set to roll out across our cities and regions,” said Mr Monaci.

Western Sydney University Interim Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Clare Pollock, said the suite of microskills and microcredential courses and scholarships will empower women in construction and will help to meet Australia’s workforce needs.

“The University has a proud history of opening up educational opportunities for students including talented women in our region. These innovative microskills and microcredentials will help students upskill and take advantage of skilled job opportunities in the fast-growing construction sector,” said Professor Pollock.

“Western Sydney University is pleased to partner with TAFE NSW and CPB Contractors to co-develop and co-deliver courses that integrate research-led learning with advanced technical and industry-based skills while boosting diversity in the sector.” Successful applicants will be offered a pre-class connection session to meet other women and visit a construction site in Sydney.

TAFE NSW and Training Services NSW are also inviting young women in schools and parents across the state to register for a Girls in Trades virtual event on the 22nd of May. LOCALLY based Dr Chris Mah is facing his biggest challenge yet as he embarks on a medical mission to the Philippines to provide medical assistance to those in need.

This year he was accepted as part of an Australian medical team of 35+ volunteers to provide general medical consults, dental and optical services to vulnerable communities in the Philippines, consulting over 450 people per day.

Dr Chris says his core values of service and charity have always been an integral part of his life, that being a driving motivation in what led him to volunteer.

“I think it’s an important thing to make a difference trying to help where we can help.”

“I also do have that advantage of having a GP background plus a mental health one and like many other Asian countries, mental health is often not talked about or addressed much. It’s an opportunity to start introducing a little bit in such a way that is helpful.”

Dr Chris recommends others to volunteer if they have the opportunity. No medical background required, just a willingness to lend a hand and help others in need.

“I think it gives people an opportunity to appreciate what they have.”

“I’ve been very encouraged by the support from everybody, including the people here at work. It’s been really nice to see how it opens up conversations about how they also view things like this,” he said.

Remembering the Iron Maiden: A Tribute to Courage and Sacrifice

THE iconic silhouette of the Scout reconnaissance vehicle, known affectionately as the Iron Maiden, has become a familiar sight, evoking memories of valour and camaraderie.

This vehicle, hailing from the 2nd Commando Regiment, holds a special place in the hearts of many, serving as a poignant tribute to three extraordinary individuals: CPL Cameron Baird VC MG, PTE Tim Aplin, and LCPL Merv McDonald.

The story of the Iron Maiden traces back to the rugged landscapes of Afghanistan, where it bore witness to acts of bravery and selflessness that would etch themselves into the annals of history. A poignant image captured before their fateful deployment in 2009 immortalizes CPL Baird VC MG and his two mates, PTE Aplin and LCPL McDonald. These three

men, bound by mateship and duty, embarked on many missions that would ultimately claim their lives in separate incidents.

The Iron Maiden, adorned with the inscription “Iron Maiden” – a nod to the trio’s Favorite band – served faithfully despite its lack of armour, traversing the treacherous terrain of Afghanistan on multiple tours. Tragically, PTE Tim Aplin was killed in action on 21 June 2010. Later LCPL Merv McDonald was killed in action 30 August 2012, and CPL Cameron Baird VC MG on was killed in Action 22 June 2013. Their loss reverberated deeply, leaving an indelible mark on their fellow soldiers and the community they served.

For the 2nd Commando Regiment, the Iron Maiden transcends its role as a mere vehicle; it stands as a living memorial to their fallen comrades, a tangible reminder of their courage and sacrifice. This year, as the nation paused to commemorate ANZAC week, the 2nd Commando Regiment entrusted the Iron Maiden

to the community of Blacktown, allowing it to serve as a poignant symbol of remembrance and resilience.

All three soldiers, CPL Baird, PTE Aplin, and LCPL McDonald, had ties to Western Sydney, where they trained at Holsworthy and Richmond. Their legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew them and the countless lives they touched with their bravery and dedication.

In recognition of his extraordinary valour, CPL Cameron Baird was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour bestowed by Australia. His courage, and that of his comrades, serves as a beacon of inspiration for future generations, reminding us of all of the profound sacrifices made in service to our nation.

As we reflect on the legacy of the Iron Maiden and the brave souls it represents, let us honour their memory by striving to uphold the values of courage, loyalty, and selflessness for which they so nobly stood.

to Mothers Need some ideas for Mum?

HERE’S one thing Mums have in common and that is that their offspring mean absolutely everything to them.

So the really good news is that when it comes to spoiling Mum on Mother’s Day, there’s no such thing as a bad gift; as long as it comes from you she will adore it!

A handmade gift or card will always be well received, especially if the card has a loving message written inside it. That’s music to the ears of those on a tight budget, I’m sure.

For those with some money to spend, Mum will really appreciate any gift that shows you have put some thought into buying. So if you want to really impress her, pick her favourite colour, or something that connects with her favourite hobby. Take notice when she says she really wishes she had something in particular and buy her that.

She’ll love that you paid attention to her dreams!

Another thing Mums have in common is wanting to spend time with you. So a gift that you can share with her will always be a winner. An ideal gift is tickets to go see a show together, a dinner out somewhere or even a board game that you can play with her.

On top of the above don’t forget the four magical words that will mean more than the greatest of tangible gifts.

Remember to say: I love you Mum!

Here’s

In every smile, in every tear, A mother’s love, forever near.

Her gentle touch, her warm embrace

She fills our lives with endless grace.

Through sleepless nights and weary days, Her unwavering love, always stays.

She guides us through both joy and sorrow, A beacon shining bright tomorrow.

In her eyes we are never wrong, In her arms, we truly belong.

With words of wisdom, soft and wise, She helps us see through cloudy skies.

On Mother’s Day, we celebrate, The love that makes us feel so great.

For all the sacrifices made, In her love, we find our shade.

So here’s to mothers, near and far, Guiding us like a brilliant star.

With every heartbeat, we repay, The love that grows with every day.

Legends of the Nepean KEVIN CANNING

KEVIN Canning is one of the principals of the Penrith Men’s Walk & Talk, which starts every Thursday night in the Coffee Club opposite Tench Reserve.

A Life Member of both the Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Football Club and the P&C Association, Kevin is driven by a desire to be actively involved in the community, whether through his family life, his work or the Men’s Walk & Talk.

Born in Paddington, Kevin lived the first two years of his life in Annandale, before the family moved to Emu Plains in 1973.

He attended Emu Plains PS and Nepean HS, then took up a Carpentry trade, receiving his ticket in 1990. Initially working as an employee in the Construction Industry, the recession in 1992 saw him become

a Self Employed Contractor, still working in the Construction Industry, and he continues to apply his trade to this day, now in partnership with his wife Alisse.

Kevin and Alisse married in 1994 at St Thomas Anglican Church Mulgoa, and have three children, Larissa, Jarrod and Matthew, with their first grandchild also on the way due early August.

An introduction to Rugby League at the age of 3 subsequently turned into a 21-year career, beginning with two years in Under 7’s and progressing over the ensuing years through to A Grade, where he would be coached by former Penrith NRL coach Len Stacker, former grade players Cliff Cartwright and Grant Drinkwater. and play alongside a number of exPanthers, including Legend of the Nepean Brett Lobb, Jody Gall and Matt Sing.

Among the highlights from his Rugby League career is being a member of the Club’s first ever

Alisse and Kevin - Wedding

premiership-winning team in 1981.

A second premiership title was attained in Under 19’s Division One, where he would score the winning try in the Grand Final.

Cricket also played a part in Kevin’s life as a boy, playing as an all-rounder for Emu Plains and representing Penrith in Nepean District cricket competition. Cricket would however become too all-consuming, from competing in the school team midweek, the club team on Saturdays and the representative team on Sundays.

Cricket’s loss was however Rugby League’s gain, and Kevin would play League through to the age of 27, when he then retired, switching his focus to coaching, training and committee involvement. In total Kevin has dedicated over 40 years of service to

the game of rugby league.

As his sons’ junior careers gained momentum, Kevin moved with them to Glenmore Park JRLFC and would continue his involvement in the sport for the next 7 years, before younger son Matthew moved on to St Marys, where he would go on to represent Penrith in the SG Ball.

Whilst involved in all the different aspects of Rugby League, Kevin would quite often still be at the football ground at 8pm, 4 days per week, socialising with friends after training, meetings or games.

Life changed somewhat, when he retired from coaching and his youngest got his driver’s licence. Kevin suddenly lost his connection with the social network of the Rugby League community.

In 2018, he realised he needed a new goal and set out with Alisse to walk 10km per day.

Kevin noticed a marked difference in his physical and mental health, so decided he would like to also take up this activity with his mates, to reinvigorate broken social connections.

After elder son Jarrod had attended funerals for four young men by the time he was 21, Kevin realised there was a deeper need in the community for men, both young and old, to connect with others to foster communication and discussion, rather than face issues in isolation.

A message to that purpose was put on Facebook and Kevin was inundated with positive responses.

A subsequent discussion with Paul Wallace led both men to invite Alan

Kevin Canning was nominated as a Legend of the Nepean by Andrew Paech.

Harding, who had lost one son to suicide and was also looking for a purpose and resolution to his life.

Jamie Large and Billy Beggs also both came on board at the outset, with Andrew Paech (Westcare) subsequently joining the quintet when Westcare stepped in as the official partner of the Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk.

From an initial walking group of 19 men, the number of walkers at Penrith’s Men’s Walk & Talk now averages around 40 walkers each Thursday night.

Offshoot groups have since been formed in other districts and states, all inspired by the success of the Penrith Men’s Walk & Talk, which Australian television and radio personality Gus Worland, the founder of Gotcha4Life, describes as ‘The biggest Men’s Mental Health weekly walk in the Southern Hemisphere’.

Kevin has received both a ‘Premiers Award’ and a ‘Community Service Award’ but regards the greatest achievement in his life as his family. “We are a very close-knit family,” said Kevin.

A pet-friendly bouquet: Celebrating Mother’s Day safely

AS Mother’s Day approaches, the desire to honour and cherish the mothers in our lives deepens. Among the many ways to express gratitude, giving a bouquet of flowers remains a timeless gesture. However, for households with pets, there’s a crucial consideration: ensuring that the floral arrangement is pet-friendly.

Flowers and Pet Safety

Many common flowers and plants can pose serious risks to our furry companions. Lilies, for instance, stand out as particularly hazardous to cats, with potentially fatal consequences if ingested. Dogs aren’t entirely immune either, as certain varieties of lilies can cause harm to them as well. Other flora like azaleas, tulips, daffodils, and carnations also harbor toxins that could harm pets if consumed. It’s essential for thoughtful gift-givers to communicate their preference for petsafe blooms when ordering flowers for a pet-owning mother.

Pet-Friendly Blooms

Thankfully, there exists an abundance of pet-friendly flowers that allow us to celebrate Mother’s Day without compromising our pets’ safety. Here are a few options to consider:

• Roses: A timeless symbol of love and affection, roses offer both beauty and pet-friendliness, although the

thorns warrant caution around playful pets.

• Gerbera Daisies

• Sunflowers

• Orchids

• Snapdragons

Ensuring Pet Safety

While indulging in the beauty of pet-friendly flowers, it’s essential to prioritise pet safety. Here are some quick tips to keep in mind:

• Keep flowers out of reach: Prevent accidental ingestion by placing floral arrangements in areas inaccessible to pets.

• Beware of flower food: Remove any powdered flower food, as it could be toxic to pets if ingested. Instead, maintain the freshness of the bouquet by changing the vase water regularly.

• Consider Potted Plants: For a lasting gift, consider pet-safe potted plants that your mum can enjoy long after Mother’s Day.

• Secure heavy vases: Ensure that vases are securely placed to prevent

them from toppling over and causing accidents.

In the event of accidental ingestion or adverse reactions, prompt veterinary assistance is crucial. By selecting pet-friendly blooms and implementing safety measures, we can celebrate Mother’s Day joyfully while safeguarding the well-being of our furry companions.

Five of the best on one stage at Panthers

FROM the minute my husband Greg overheard that I was going to be interviewing Little Pattie, our home was filled with the dulcet tones of him singing “He’s My Blonde Haired, Stompie Wompie Real Gone Surfer Boy.” It’s a bit of a tongue twister but very catchy - yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!

Little Pattie, who made the song famous, burst on to the Australian charts with it just over 60 years ago!

Patricia Amphlett (Thompson) was just 14 years old when the song hit the charts. Born and bred in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, she had won talent quests and performed in local surf clubs. Her popularity soared and by 1965 she was voted Australian Female Singer of the Year.

Dubbed Little Pattie, due to her petite stature, her name has been a household Australian name ever since. She has never stopped performing, has had many hits, released many albums, won several coveted awards and was the youngest person to entertain our troops in Vietnam.

Next month Little Pattie will be joining some fellow pioneers of Rock n Roll; Lucky Starr, Digger Revell, Jade Hurley and Dinah Lee on stage at Panthers! Bob McKinnon’s Good Old Days of Rock n Roll is a show not to be missed on June 2.

What a line-up! Can you imagine how many years combined experience will be on that stage?

“At 75, I’m the baby of the show!” Little Pattie laughed.

The other four performers are all 80 plus.

“We thoroughly enjoy being on stage together. None of us are young, none of us have stopped. We really enjoy performing together as much as the audience enjoy watching it.

“The five of us have known each other forever, cared about each other and still like each other, now that doesn’t happen very often!”

And what about the Wompie Stompie Surfer song, does she still remember the words?

“I could sing it in my sleep,” Little Pattie said.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see this magnificent line-up at Panthers on June 2. Details below! Oh, and watch Nepean News Facebook for a chance to win a double pass!

It was said that on the 14th day of April the defendant (David) went before the Commissioner Roger Therry and being duly sworn stated on his oath that the signature to a cheque for £3 14s. 3d. now in court was not his handwriting, where in truth and fact the signature was his handwriting. The Registrar of the Court of Requests Mr Frazer said he remembered the plaintiff in the case of Single v. Berguin regarding a promissory note and the defendant stated upon oath that the signature David Berguin was not his handwriting and he particularly cautioned him to be cautious, but he persisted in his statement and he had been sworn in the usual way. He produced the record of the case where the defendant was summoned for a note of hand for £3 14s. 7d. In cross-examination the prisoner said it was not his handwriting, but he did not say if he signed it “as he must have been drunk at the time and he denied it in the most unqualified manner”. Next, Mr Single said that he knew the prisoner because for seven or eight years he was in his employ as a blacksmith and on settling the account between them there was a balance of funds and he took the prisoner’s note that he produced in court and the body of the note is in his handwriting and the signature of David Berguin is in the prisoner’s handwriting and he saw him sign it. He said he summoned Berguin before the Court of Requests. A Juror (named Hall) said that six years had passed without him seeing the prisoner as he engaged with a next-door neighbour. He did not see him but he heard he was there and he summoned him. He did not present the note to the prisoner. Next John Shaw as a witness to the note said that he remembered the prisoner in Mr Single’s employ some years ago and this was David’s signature, but he had no doubt the prisoner signed it, but he could not remember. Next Juror Hall said that he could not remember where he was when he saw the note but believed that it was David’s handwriting but he could not tell where they were when the prisoner told him that he owed something to Mr Single because this was about six years ago.

He said that on occasion he had been in Mr Single’s employ for twenty years and if the prisoner said that he signed the note he must have been very much intoxicated. His Honour said that it is not essential for two witnesses to disprove the actual fact sworn by a person charged with perjury, as it is sufficient if one witness swears distinctly to the fact and is corroborated in a material point by a second witness. If therefore the Jury believed the evidence of Single and Hall then the Jury would convict the prisoner. The Jury retired for about five minutes and returned a verdict of Guilty. In passing sentence upon the prisoner His Honour observed that he had not tried a case in the Criminal Court in which he was not, morally speaking, convinced that false swearing had been committed. Prisoner was to be imprisoned in Newcastle Gaol for two years. John Single was born in England in 1792 and came to Australia on the “Harriet” in 1817 leaving England in November 1816 and arriving in Sydney in May 1817. In June 1818 John married Sarah Baker by Reverend Cartwright by special licence at St Matthews Church of England, Windsor. Sarah was born at Windsor in 1801 to William & Sarah Baker (Snr) (Nee: Draper). In December 1824 John was elected to the Grand Jury and 1825 in Windsor he had the title of “Yeoman of Evan” (a man holding and cultivating a small, landed estate - a freeholder). John was one of the most successful pioneers in the Nepean district where he made full use of new scientific methods in agriculture and grazing. He also built a school on his property and supported the building of the Castlereagh Anglican Church. John died after a short illness in January 1858 at his residence at the age of 66 years and was buried at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Richmond. Sarah died in 1868 at Castlereagh and is buried at Richmond with John. Notes - R. v. Berguin [1838] NSW Supreme Court of New South Wales – perjury

DO you know what you pay per kWhr for Solar? Is it 20 cents, 30 cents or even 40 or 50 cents?

When I ask this question to groups, most answer that they don’t really know how to understand or even read their bills, let alone if they are paying too much.

I am sure everyone knows roughly what their fuel costs are per litre, and you would baulk at paying $3.00 per litre and if the service station was selling fuel at $1.00 you wouldn’t get past the queue of others clambering

Jim’s Gems

for the chance to fill up.

If you take the time to understand the information that is on your bill, you will be better armed to search easily and quickly for a better rate which can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year.

On the second page you will generally see the summary of the bill.

Controlled rate (HWS previously known as ‘off-peak’). This is a set period usually from 11:00pm to 7:00am where the electricity is available to heat Hot Water Systems at a time that is cheaper for the retailer to sell it.

General rate (the rate you pay to use electricity throughout the day and night).

Daily supply charge – Controlled. The daily charge the retailer charges you for the privilege of having a Controlled Rate meter.

Daily supply – the daily charge for having general electricity at your premises.

For this story, I randomly pulled out 2 bills from clients locally both using the same retailer and the rates were significantly different.

BILL 1.

General rate. $0.338360 (33.836 cents) per kWhr.

Controlled Load usage. $0.227260 (22.726 cents) per kWhr.

Daily supply charge – Controlled.

$0.10472 (10.472 cents) per DAY.

Daily supply. $0.81444 81.444 cents) per DAY.

BILL 2.

General rate. $0.38445 (38.445 cents) per kWhr.

Controlled Load usage. $0.23870 (23.87 cents) per kWhr.

Daily supply charge – Controlled.

$0.12472 (12.472 cents) per DAY.

Daily supply. $0.92554 92.554 cents) per DAY.

This difference will quickly add up over a 3-month period and not to mention the additional difference

between retailers.

A couple of quick points to look out for are (a) actually read the bill beside the reading and (e) estimated the bill, took a guess and will sort it difference when they actually read the next bill.

The last but also most important way to check if you are paying the best rate possible is to use the Government comparison website www.energymadeeasy.gov.au which is a non-sponsored quick and easy way to enter your details and find the best rate for you.

How property is your life raft from the rat race

IF you ever want to see what corporate slavery looks like, scroll through LinkedIn and look at the stuff people post:

• “I’m feeling energised from the summit!”

• “I’m passionate about digital health!”

• “I’m thrilled to be part of this dynamic team!”

• “Leveraging my expertise to drive strategic growth!”

It’s a ridiculous bit of theatre where they know you’re lying, you know you’re lying, you know they know you’re lying, and they know you know they’re lying. But everyone has an unspoken agreement to pretend that everything’s fine. Or maybe people have fooled themselves into thinking this is what they want from life because they can’t see any credible alternative. I don’t have the answer; these are deeper waters than I’m qualified to wade through.

Chuck Palahniuk and David Fincher beautifully captured the absurdity of the modern corporate man in the ultimate bro movie Fight Club (1999). The protagonist discovers the existential dread of getting everything society tells him he wants, only to feel empty.

Personally, I’d rather be washed out to sea by a

tsunami and have nothing to hold onto but a floating cactus than be forced to restrict my freedom of expression and be crushed into thinking I must act a certain way to fit in with everyone else. Looking at the popularity of movies like Fight Club, I can’t help but guess that a silent majority of the population probably feels the same way but doesn’t have another way out. I’ve been there myself, having experienced the culture of working in big corporate organisations.

I can only guess why most property investors have decided to get into investing. I suspect it has something to do with hope. For me, it was a lifeline out of that world. I was incredibly lucky to stumble onto the solution early on in life, and for anyone reading this, congratulations! You have as well, and you don’t have any idea how fortunate you are to have found the answer. If you weren’t born wealthy, there are only two ways out of the rat race.

The first is to start your own business and work for yourself, which is a risky move with a high probability of buying yourself a low-paying job. Particularly in developed countries where the secular trend is for all businesses to be eaten up by big businesses. The second is to find some investment that beats the rate of monetary debasement (ie, when governments print money and give it away as per the Covid payments received by individuals and businesses), which, by my calculation, is around 10.5 percent. This is also

extremely difficult without using leverage (borrowing money to invest).

The thing to understand with leverage is that it magnifies both the upside and the downside. So, to be effective, the asset needs to have a specific set of characteristics. Namely stable returns that generally trend upwards without many sharp downturns that will wipe you out. The good news is that property is the perfect vehicle to lever up as it fulfills those requirements.

Most average properties using a 90 percent Loan to Value Ratio (LVR) have an internal rate of return of around 15-20 percent over the long run and up to 3040 percent during the final years of a bull run. If we consider what this means for a moment, the average returns of the best hedge funds in the world, such as Bridgewater, run by legends of macro investing like Ray Dalio, are being comfortably beaten by ordinary mum-and-dad investors buying property. While it’s not as cool and sophisticated, I’ll take practicality and effectiveness over sophistication any day of the week. Take a Step

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” is an often cited quote of the Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu and when you think of Life Long Learning as such a journey you realise at any point new learning is one step away.

For many, the opportunities between the covers of this program provide exactly that first step and the College has been delivering these opportunities for over thirty five years and as its predecessors, the Penrith, Lower Mountains and Katoomba Day and Evening Colleges for another thirty six years before that.

Taking that Step can take you in many different directions too. It might be the discovery of an unrealised talent in art, writing, music or craft.

It could also be a Step toward mastering those elusive challenges in life that come with technology, language or literacy that leads on to confidence, work or social life.

For others its not the first step but one more of those “one steps” that move you from casual interest to abiding passion, or limited skills to confident expression.

Wherever you are on that Life Long Learning journey have a look inside and Take A Step on your journey.

Eric Wright, Principal.

A JOURNEY OF DEVELOPMENT & PROGRESS

Nathan commenced at the College around 2013.

Born in Melbourne, Nathan came to Sydney at 8 years of age and started year 4 in Glendenning near Blacktown.

Throughout his time at Blacktown Boys HS he had really good art teachers who pushed him constantly to actually pursue art which drove him to continue his passion in his tertiary education.

All throughout high school he was continually doing creative subjects — visual arts, visual design, ceramics, photography. From there he went on to graduate with a diploma of fine arts. After finishing arts school, Nathan went to Nepean Arts Society trying to find artists and other classes to establish himself as an artist.

It was there Peter Gonzales, a tutor at the College, suggested he start teaching at NCC with the first class being Painting and Drawing for Beginners based at Penrith High School.

It ran for a long while and over the years it actually included working with clay - as an artist Nathan mainly worked in painting drawing and sculpture.

Clay was something he was quite eager to introduce into his classes. Aside from actually using it with mixed media integrated with painting and drawing, Nathan was eager to actually play around with it individually on its own. Working with Clay is one of the classes he now teaches.

When Peter retired, he and Nathan had been working together during a brief period a few years back. When their classes coincided together – he had his art classes and Nathan

had his own classes. While Nathan was working more with beginners into intermediate Peter was working with intermediate into the more expert level. Since Peter’s retirement Nathan’s classes have phased into Peter’s classes.

“You need to understand teaching practices, classroom management, how to engage with different levels and understanding the different level types as well.” he said

“Kinetic learners who learn hands on. We have learners that learn from reading and so on. Having to understand those types of learners

where they’re reading about it and having to understand it that way or those actually getting physical with the subject where they actually develop a better understanding”

Nathan structures his whole course each term.

Last term was called ‘Pure Imagination’ where students had to take a book that has no form of pictures or any knowledge to let you know what the characters look like. For example Harry Potter - we know that Harry wears glasses - he has a scar on his forehead etc so something like that would be a bit redundant because of the fact we know what Harry looks like.

So looking into something like a novel that doesn’t have any form of representation you’re coming up with your own design just by using descriptive language and imagining what this person looks like or this is the scene I’m picturing or this is the landscape in which this scene takes place.

The students seem to adapt and although this idea presented a bit of a challenge, Nathan was pleased with the number of students who embraced the project.

Nathan loves being able to push the limits allowing him to explore and experiment with the class. The class often wander outside the College for a change of scenery or travel on weekend excursions to the botanical gardens in the city where they draw or take photos to gain inspiration and gather material to influence their art.

It’s all part of the learning experience…

UNLEASHING CREATIVITY

Embarking on a Journey of Artistic Growth.

Anita first became aware of the College when she was alerted to the course brochure whilst walking by the front of the premises back in April 2021.

Anita had previously been searching online for somewhere she could attend to participate in Art classes that would teach her how to draw and paint. As such, she enrolled in the Art ~ Drawing, Painting and Watercolour course.

Anita’s passion for art flourished as she delved deeper into the world of colours, shapes, and creativity. Under the guidance of the class teacher Peter Gonzalez, she honed her skills and discovered new techniques that brought her artwork to

Although Wayne had previously taken Chinese Language Classes back in University, he felt like he needed to wind back the clock and start from scratch.

Since enrolling in April last year, he has been taking classes at the College and recently completed Mandarin Beginners 3, which allows him to have basic conversations in Mandarin.

Wayne now feels confident enough to travel to

life. Each stroke of the brush was a step towards self-expression, and each colour on the canvas told a story of growth and accomplishment.

Anita really enjoys coming to class as it’s reasonably priced and the facilities are good.

“It’s been great to get to know new people and interact with others while learning from them as well

as the teacher”

She is particularly appreciative of the beautiful new friendships she has made during her time with the College.

Anita has produced some amazing artworks during class which she was able to display during a recent Exhibition of Student & Tutor works held at the College.

IT’S NEV ER TOO LATE TO LEARN

“No matter what our age or stage in life, there is always something new to learn....”

As a resident of the Lower Blue Mountains, Wayne was eager to find some Chinese lessons nearby.

China or Taiwan and navigate his way around, order food, and communicate with the locals.

Being an incredible 68 year old, his experience has encouraged him to realize that it’s never too late to learn new things and think differently. As such, he is now considering enrolling in other courses such as writing, singing, and dancing.

Wayne believes that there are many courses out there that can spark your interest, no matter what your age is.

He encourages people to enjoy learning something different and new, without feeling like they have to be a genius or super fit.

Wayne plans to continue learning and expanding his horizons for many years to come.

“I would happily continue learning till I’m 90 years of age” he said.

Introduction to Classical Nahuatl, language of the Aztecs

Nahuatl was the language of the Ancient Aztecs and dialects of it are still spoken in Mexico today. The Aztecs had their own hieroglyphic writing system which was mostly used to write dates, place and personal names. When the Spanish conquered Mexico in 1521 and introduced the alphabet, the indigenous peoples seized upon the opportunity it presented to record their legends, songs and histories, before much of their culture was destroyed by colonialism.

Today we can read this Aztec literature, which throws light on the preconquest and early colonial societies of Mexico.

Canberra captain Glenn Morrison led all scorers with 25 points, 17

Edwards steps up to join Dally M lead

Panthers fullback Dylan Edwards has joined Nicho Hynes atop the Dally M leaderboard after a starring performance in Round 9 helped Penrith to a commanding win over the Rabbitohs.

EARNING three points in the 42-12 win, Edwards finished the night with 200m run metres, six tackle breaks, two linebreaks, a try assist and six goals from six attempts as the Blues hopeful helped fill the void left by Nathan Cleary.

The performance continues Edwards strong recent run of form which has seen him collect 12 points in the last three weeks after scoring five points in Round 7 and four points in Round 8 to go with this week’s three-point score – now drawing him level with Hynes on 24 points to lead the Dally M race.

The New South Wales hopefuls narrowly lead Bulldogs forward Viliame Kikau on 23 points after he collected five points in his side’s win over Wests Tigers.

There were only four players to land the maximum six points in Round 9, with Isaah Yeo (Panthers), Elliott Whitehead (Raiders), James Tedesco (Roosters) and Jackson Hastings (Knights) all producing the goods in their teams’ respective wins.

Two Manly players sit inside the top five of Dally M voting leading into Round 10 with Tom Trbojevic (21 points) and Daly Cherry-Evans (20 points) within one game’s score of the lead, while Zac Lomax (19 points) and Pat Carrigan (18 points) remain in the mix despite their teams suffering defeat in Round 9.

Rain fails to dampen Hawkesbury Gold Cup

AHUGE crowd celebrated a fantastic day of racing and entertainment at Hawkesbury’s 19th standalone Richmond Club Hawkesbury Cup meeting.

Hawkesbury Race Club Chief Executive Officer James Heddo stated “We were very fortunate to miss a lot of the rain that fell throughout

Sydney during last week and offered a complete package of high-quality racing, as well as plenty of off course entertainment, which was embraced by the local Community.

“The increases in prize money provided by Racing NSW delivered the strongest fields ever assembled at a Hawkesbury Cup meeting, with competitive racing and close finishes adding to the excitement on the day.

“Our off-course entertainment,

including a hotly-contested Fashions on the Field Competition, as well as a stunning after Cup performance by Furnace and the Fundamentals, was well received by everyone in attendance.

“The Hawkesbury standalone meeting was established in 2006 and continues to go from strength to strength. I look forward to now working with Racing NSW to look at any opportunities to further enhance this event.”

WITH exactly one third of the NRL season now in our rear-vision mirrors, I thought I’d take a look at the season thus far and check out which teams, players, and issues in our game that are hot, and those that are not.

Let’s start with those teams who are flying compared to those just hovering.

Those flying:

Sharks They have only had one loss this season and that was at the hands of the Tigers. Sure they’ve had what could only be described as a ‘mediocre’ draw but hey, you can only play what or who is in front of you, and they’ve done just that, and are sitting atop the competition after the first 9 rounds.

Storm Sitting equal first with the Sharks, Craig Bellamy just never ceases to amaze with his constant ‘reinvention’ of the boys from Melbourne. Their big 4 - Munster, Hughes, Grant and Papenhuyzen, until last weekend have been epic. Of course the ankle injury to the hapless Pappy against the Titans last Saturday night is a dampener but the Storm are definitely a team to fear this season.

Panthers You can visually see and feel every other team in the competition up the ante when they play the back-to back-to back premiers. This year more than ever they are the hunted in the 2024 premiership. But they know this and respond accordingly. Dylan Edwards and Isaah Yeo in particular have gone next level in the opening third of the season with ‘Dyl’ leading the Dally M’s!

Dolphins Sitting in 4th spot they continue to totally amaze with their tenacity. They just never go away! And for a club in their second year of existence this is more than commendable.

Disappointing teams:

Rabbitohs Who would have ever predicted after 9 rounds of the comp that the Rabbits would be sitting stone motherless? I didn’t. I had them finishing in the top 4! But they have been disappointingly poor with star recruit Jack Wighton thinking to himself “What the…”.

Warriors Another team I had finishing top 6 but haven’t won a game in the past month. A draw against Manly followed by losses to the Dragons, Titans, and Knights has them reeling in 14th spot on the premiership table.

Cowboys The Cowboys have lost their last 4 games with two of them being at the fortress of a home ground. They seem to be all over the shop in both defence and attack and with a game this weekend away to the Titans it’s just about already a must-win.

Players to impress:

Dylan Edwards As mentioned is leading the Dally M’s and quite frankly is in irresistible form. There is no better fullback in the game who pops up exactly when and where

his team needs him EVERY TIME!

Zac Lomax For a bloke who doesn’t like playing on the wing, gee he is good at it. To a point I’d have him and Brian To’o as my NSW wingers in Origin game 1 this year.

Billy Kikau Big Billy is back to his rampaging juggernaut self after a year disrupted by injury. He’ll be out to spoil his old team Penrith’s party when they clash at Bluebet this Friday night.

Star players who have been quiet:

Jason Taumalolo The original ‘Hulk” of the NRL just doesn’t look his formidable self this season. Maybe that 10 year contract he signed 6 years ago with the Cowboys is a cautionary tale for those looking to do the same.

Dylan Brown With the unwanted stage being set with an injury to his fellow half ( Mitch Moses) at the Eels, Dylan Brown has yet to grab his team by the neck and say ‘lets go, come with me boys”.

Adin Fonua-Blake Blake was one of the top props in our competition last season but has failed to reach those dizzy heights in 2024. If he does, so will his Warriors.

Biggest issue in the game:

Two things in our game that have me and lots of others cross-eyed with uncertainty are the ‘6 to go’ fiasco and the inconsistent bunker! Honestly the 6 to go has got to go. Every time that bell rings for an indiscretion most don’t know what the hell for. I also think its one reason we are seeing a lot more injuries this season. The game just cannot keep up. As for the bunker I’m honestly lost with current interpretations that are sometimes policed and sometimes not. Its time we had ex-players in the bunker along with the refs. A player had a try on the weekend allowed and even he laughed at the decision, yet a team can be given a NO Try when there was an obstruction 30 metres away from the play! Go figure.

See you at Bluebet this Friday night…..

Don’t forget, if you’re looking for a new car contact my great mate at Sinclair Hyundai, Toby Hughes.
