Chief Executive’s View

Y

ou’ll notice something a little different about this Parklife edition. The slight change of emphasis is a reflection of the positive changes taking place within Nene Park and the way that it is managed. We are refocusing on the way the Charity that runs the Park (Nene Park Trust) can provide more benefits for visitors and for wildlife and at the same time, work more closely with you all to ensure that the Park is providing the best facilities and activities it can. You will see that as summer makes way for autumn and winter, there are lots of events and activities planned to help you get out in the Park and enjoy the new seasons. You will also see that there are a number of ways that you can become involved in supporting the wide range of important ‘services’ that the Park provides. These include supporting our Park partners and the Park itself, for example through joining a volunteer programme or supporting projects. You could provide your professional or practical experience, perhaps by supporting gardening, education, wildlife and construction projects, or by providing advice and help in subjects such as design, architecture, fundraising and educational play. From fishing to art to more strenuous activities, I hope that you enjoy both the mix of articles, our seasonal look and of course, the exciting opportunities that the autumn and winter seasons provide for enjoying the Park and its great facilities. All we need is us...

A

s a charitable organisation, we at Nene Park Trust understand how important it is to receive help and support towards other charities and worthwhile causes. We feel very pleased that we can provide a space that can be used by individuals or groups to fundraise. The Park and its facilities are also used by a number of charities on a regular basis including Sailability, who are a charity that offer disabled people in the Peterborough area the chance to get out, enjoy the fresh air and go sailing. A monthly Dementia Cafe is run by the Alzhemier’s Society at the Park, providing those with dementia and their carers time to get information and advice, as well as the chance to socialise. These are just two of the many organisations that use the Park for this purpose. This year, the Park has played host to all manner of fundraising events such as sponsored running, bike rides and even a sightless walk! Peterborough Association for the Blind’s youngest volunteer, Ethan, navigated his way round Gunwade Lake at Ferry Meadows using a long white cane whilst blindfolded (see pic below). His efforts raised £345 and the presence at the Park would certainly help to raise awareness for the charity – well done Ethan!

In July, the Park hosted the annual Race for Life event in aid of Cancer Research UK, where nearly 1,800 ‘people in pink’ ran, walked and even danced their way around the 5km course. The target amount for donations on this event was £95,000 which is an incredible amount of money that will make a difference to the charity. There’s been everything from a charity BIG Walkies dog walk for the RSPCA to a sponsored BRoW (bike, run or walk) for Magpas Air Ambulance. There’s a world of charitable activity going on in the Park, so much of which we are not even aware of.

If you are planning to use the Park for this type of event, we would love to hear about it so we can offer support and publicity. Please send details through to visitor.services@neneparktrust.org.uk

Progress is impossible without change

H Bringing Art to Nene Park

O

ur recent fundraising efforts are bearing fruit with the welcome news that we have been successful with our funding request to the Arts Council England (ACE), the distributor of National Lottery funds for arts-based projects. The ACE money will be used to work with Artist-in-Residence, Charron Pugsly-Hill, for a year from October 2016, to work with a diverse range of Park visitors and other artists. The aim is to creatively capture the natural beauty of the Park, whilst also promoting the nature-based art activities to be held there and at events around Peterborough. This grant-funded project follows hot on the heels of our fundraising success, with our project to extend the Sand Martin Bank on Lynch Lake. This was funded primarily by the Mick George Community Fund, but also with welcome contributions from the Ernest Kleinwort and Jack Patston Charitable Trusts, amongst others. As a Charity, Nene Park Trust is extremely grateful for any donations from organisations and the public. It helps us carry out our work to make the Park as inviting and interesting as possible for our visitors. We are also just as grateful for nonmonetary contributions as we are with cash donations. If you are attached to a company who may be able to supply us with equipment or materials, or if you can offer some time to help us in the Park, we would love to hear from you. Your help and support will be wholeheartedly appreciated by us and everyone who visits the Park. Keep an eye out on Facebook and our website for details on our first arts-based project taking place in the Park with our Artist-in-Residence, Charron Pugsley-Hill.

i, I’m Tom. I joined the Trust as Trainee Ranger throughout 2013 then left for another job. Since returning to the Trust, I’ve noticed extensive changes to the environment around Ferry Meadows. It’s clear to see that Nene Park Trust has a history of improving the way it looks after its estates, which is something I have a unique perspective of since I’ve left and come back to work here. Three years ago, Ferry Meadows was a very clean cut Park, where the majority of areas were not allowed to grow above two inches. This has changed quite dramatically of late, with more areas being left to grow especially along the miniature railway route. This small change is a great improvement, with the addition of wildflowers creating a whole new beautiful habitat for insects and amphibians. Another change that caught my eye is the Sand Martin Bank in the middle of Lynch Lake. I was part of the installation team in 2013 and now the summer sky is full of adult and juvenile birds feeding, getting ready to make their mammoth journey to the Sahara Desert for winter. You may have also noticed there are some areas you can no longer access, such as part of the bank surrounding Cockleshell Bay and a part of Overton Lake bank near Ham Bridge, both of which have been given over to wildlife. These are just a few of the changes that have happened over the past three years. There are many more to be found, I hope you enjoy discovering them.

Bark in the Park round up

I

t didn’t rain, it pawed! This was by far one of the soggiest events we have ever held! Nene Park Trust held its forth Bark in the Park event at Ferry Meadows on 10 September and it rained, a lot! Despite the weather, there was plenty of fun to be had and smiles all round from both the dogs and their owners! A number of activities were set up for both the dogs and owners to take part in. There was pin the tail on the puppy, hunt the bones, super fetch challenge, find the owner and a fantastic agility course for dogs to show off their skills. There was also a number of stallholders who braved the weather to showcase products including dog food, bandanas and aloe vera products. Even when the temperature got cooler, our canine friends and their masters stuck it out until the Fun Dog Show. We had a range of categories from Most Awesome Eyes to Best Veteran. All of the dogs were winners in our eyes but we handed out rosettes and goody bags to those who were extra special! For everyone who visited, as well as the stallholders, we would like to say a huge thank you for coming along and supporting the event, we hope you had a fantastic time. See if you can spot your pooch in the lineup below but if not, please see our Facebook page @neneparktrust for more photos from the event.

Following an event our staff will invite you to make a voluntary donation to the Trust. Lakeside @ Ferry Meadows

S

ince the development of Lakeside in 2014, the area has become a real hive of activity both on land and in water! Gunwade Lake is the perfect location for clubs and organisations and provides facilities that can be used for private functions, team building days and more. There are a number of clubs that use the lake for activities including Packers Canoe Club, Sailability and the Lakeside Sailing Club. If you are more of a spectator, they will show you how it’s done! Lakeside Kitchen & Bar are on hand to provide a selection of tasty treats to dine upon, with a beautiful backdrop of the lake to provide a relaxed dining experience. Nene Outdoors Sunny summer days are a not too distant memory as we move into the autumn months. We’d like to say a huge thank you to the Nene Outdoors team for an incredibly successful summer on Gunwade Lake. The lake has never looked more alive with the sun’s reflection sparkling across the water amongst canoes, kayaks, row boats and an oversized swan! Since Nene Park Trust took over Nene Outdoors in March this year, the team has been working tirelessly on an extensive watersports programme for all abilities to enjoy. Instructors are on hand to help and are qualified to teach windsurfing and sailing. They have a lot of exciting plans in the pipeline over the coming seasons such as the introduction of open water swimming and paddle sports.

They are a volunteer non-profit club who provides coaching sessions to develop paddling skills, recreational paddling around the lake and trips onto the nearby River Nene. New members are always welcome and do not require any kit in advance, as the facility can provide everything you need. If you are interested in joining, visit www.packers.org.uk for more details. Lakeside Sailing Club This club combines the social element of sport with getting out on the water. If you are interested in sailing and would like to take part in weekly races, this is the club for you! Every Saturday morning is Race Day for this team who get out on the water and see who can be crowned winner! The group can be found on Facebook/Lakeside Sailing Club where you can see videos and photos of what they get up to.

Peterborough Sailability The charity was launched in 2006 and over the past ten years, has worked incredibly hard to now provide two days a week of sailing, using nine boats and over 150 sailors. The team features around 70 unpaid volunteers and provide a service like no other. They are designed to help those registered as disabled, whether that be a physical or mental disability, to help them experience the calming, enjoyable effects of being out on the open water. By taking individuals out in one of the boats, they are showing how important it is to a person’s wellbeing to be able to provide support to the sailors and their families. The charity has been lucky enough to receive some generous donations from local businesses, individuals and other organsations, but are always looking for extra help. If you know of anyone that might be able to help, please get in touch. For more details on the charity and how you can get involved, visit www.peterboroughsailability.org Volunteers… step this way please! The charity wouldn’t be as successful as it is today without it’s dedicated team of volunteers. They do everything from helping to promote the charity and preparing and maintaining the equipment, to ‘buddying’ up with a disabled person to take them out on the water.

Welcome to the Bug Hotel

If you can dedicate some of your time on either a Tuesday or Thursday, it would be invaluable to those who visit. No experience is required as training will be given to a level where you can become a ‘buddy’ and get out on the water for yourself.

In addition to the wood based houses, the team has been collecting stone to create hibernacula that will be positioned around the Park, to provide a safe environment for hibernating amphibians and reptiles. Our Nene Park Volunteers have also been working on this project, by creating the most luxuriously habitable bug hotel for our local insects (below). This is located at the Nene Park Trust office, Ham Farm House, so we can get an idea of the type of insect that decides to reside here. Keep an eye out around the Park… you never know what’s lurking inside!

A

s autumn and winter arrive, the insects leave! Many will head into hibernation over the colder months, so the Conservation team is working on making their new homes a delight to reside in. A number of different styles will be created, including these large bug hotels (above). This is located in the outdoor school area and is designed for children to get involved in and see what they can find. A range of materials have been used to build this and it even features a hedgehog home in the base! AUTUMN WINTER

From running to relaxing

N

ene Park Trust is a central hub for activity to support health and wellbeing in the city. A whole array of fitness activities requiring no equipment can be performed in one of our Park spaces. Why not grab your yoga mat and relax in one of the meadows, use our expansive green space to go for a run, or raise your heart rate by organising your own boot camp? You can walk, run, cycle and even bring your horse along one of the many bridleways that leads into the Park. By using different modes of transport to get around the Park, it provides a brand new perspective every time you visit. The Park is great for visitors’ mental wellbeing as well as physical, by providing a peaceful, tranquil space that can give people the headspace they may need. The Trust also organises and hosts plenty of fun active events to take part in throughout the year. A weekly parkrun takes place on Saturday mornings, giving people the opportunity to run a 5km route in beautiful surrounds. There’s even the chance to socialise at a post-run coffee session at Ferry Meadows café where you can chat to like-minded people. For more information, visit www.parkrun.org.uk/peterborough.

f you have been out and about in the Park, you may well have bumped into one of Nene Park’s Volunteer Rangers. Dressed in blue shirts, fleeces and blue high vis jackets they have been busy patrolling the Park throughout the summer. With the help of the Volunteer Rangers, areas of the Park can be monitored more often which helps the Rangers keep on top of the maintenance. They are also more than happy to chat about the Park or help in any way they can. Fishing returns to Goldie Lane Pond

P Relieve our Rangers

W

ith summer a distant memory, our Rangers can look back on having done a fantastic job maintaining the Park over the busy months. Unfortunately, a lot of their time has been taken up finding solutions on how to prevent damage that occurs regularly across Nene Park. These issues not only have implications to staff but will also impact other visitors and our wildlife too. Our team strive to maintain the stunning views and facilities that the Park has to offer, so they will be working on improvements over the autumn and winter months in preparation for 2017. A main focus are the picnic benches located around Ferry Meadows. A number of these are severely fire damaged as disposable barbeques have been placed directly onto the wood. Our Rangers are working on various prototypes to provide barbeque stands that are both easy to use and safe for visitors. There are some great designs being produced so we’re looking forward to introducing these in the new year. We’ve seen a staggering increase in litter left by visitors this year, which is collected by the Rangers seven days a week. A number of improvements have been made recently such as installing new labelled bins, improving litter issues in the play areas, moving two bins to a more convenient location and fixing those that have been fire damaged. We’d like to make a plea to everyone visiting the Park that they use a bin or better still, take their rubbish home with them. This will preserve the beauty of the Park, protect our wildlife and allow the Rangers to work on projects to help develop the Park for your enjoyment.

eterborough & District Angling Association (P&DAA) have been long-term tenants of Nene Park Trust, controlling the fishing on both Gunwade and Overton Lake. Additionally they control the many miles of riverbank along the River Nene, as it passes through Ferry Meadows and further up stream through the Trust’s agricultural estate. These areas offer some of the country’s best coarse fishing and can be accessed by day ticket or season membership. The Association has been keen to encourage junior participation, which has fallen away in recent years, probably in favour of computer and video gaming! With this in mind, two of the Association’s committee members have trained and become Licensed Angling Coaches. They were aware the pond in Goldie Lane, set up as a disabled angling facility, was no longer being used. They are grateful that Nene Park Trust has recently allowed them the rights to go fishing there. Having not been used for a number of years, some essential maintenance work is required. It is hoped that a grant may be forthcoming from the Angling Trust to restore the pond to its former glory by removing pondweed and plants. In addition to helping junior anglers get into fishing, P&DAA would like to encourage disabled anglers to use the pond. There are nine fishing platforms around the pond, which can be safely used by anglers restricted to a wheelchair. For more information, please email P&DAA Secretary, Mr John Newman at jonfnewman@aol.com.

More to explore… Thorpe Meadows

I

t is probably true to say that Thorpe Meadows is not as well-known as it’s more famous sibling Ferry Meadows. However, that said it is a great place to spend a few hours and has plenty to offer. Top 5 things to do at Thorpe Meadows • Take a riverside or woodland walk looking out for wildlife on the way • Explore the Sculpture Collection • Stop for a drink at the Boathouse Pub or Dragonfly Hotel to enjoy the views • Cycle around the rowing lake on traffic free paths • Watch the rowers on the lake or contact the rowing club to see how you can get involved.

New face at the Trust Anne Mason I joined the Admin team at Nene Park Trust at the end of August as Administrative Assistant, covering for Rebecca while she goes on maternity leave. My working background is in admin and more recently in facilities and support services. I worked for a total of 17 years as Civil Servant in the Passport Office and for the past ten years at the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply at Easton on the Hill. I was thrilled to be offered the role at Nene Park Trust and am really looking forward to discovering all the delights that the Park has to offer. I remember happy times visiting Ferry Meadows with my family when my two children were growing up. Having been brought up on a farm, I have a great appreciation of the countryside and the positive impact and benefits it brings in terms of education and general health and wellbeing. I look forward to spending some time shadowing the Duty Ranger, Education team and Visitor Centre staff, as well as working with the Volunteers and getting to know everyone at the Trust.
