Trust gives Nelson a $5M boost Nelson charities have been given more than $5 million by the Canterbury Community Trust this year, the largest amount to come from the trust in a single year. The trust provides funds to organisations in Canterbury, Marlborough, Chatham Islands and Nelson and this year gave $37 million in donations across those regions. In Nelson, a total of 276 groups were given a donation, totalling $5,098,773. The Suter Art Gallery, the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and the Nelson School of Music were the big winners, together receiving $1.65 million from a special fund set up by the trust to help the regions recover after the Canterbury earthquakes. More than $500,000 from that special fund has gone to nine other Nelson organisations, including a grant of $300,000 to the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust’s

Warmer Healthier Homes Project for insulation for low-income houses. The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary’s general manager, Hudson Dodd, says money from the trust is vital to groups like his being able get off the ground. “What they do is really important for the Nelson region. The donation to us was a real validation that a very savvy and connected funder, who’s involved in all aspects of the community, saw us as a key cultural component for Nelson over the coming years.” Donations outside of the special fund were split amongst organisations in arts and heritage, community and economic development, education, environment and sport. Jill Spooner, chair of the Canterbury Community Trust, says being able to spread the payments to places like Nelson is a “source of great pride”.

We’re looking at between eight and ten fights and we have 50 corporate tables to sell. in the community. “Anyone keen to be involved should get in touch and also anyone who’d like to reserve a corporate table.” In 2013, the Fight 4 Victory was a huge success, raising more than $50,000 for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust, helping it get established in its own building and create a programme for hundreds of children and teenagers. strength issues, the event was left without a home in 2014, leaving a big hole in the fundraising plans for the club. The move to Saxton Stadium coincides with the Nelson Giants basketball season so the temporary seating will be in place. Organiser Barry Galbraith says the response to last year’s event had a lasting impression and he’s confident the 2015 version will be just as successful. “For the 26 people who took part last time, it was life changing. They all lost a lot of weight and got fitter than they probably had been before and a lot spoke about more confident at work and just in life,” he says.

“I’ve had wives coming up to me saying my husband is a better person because of this, that’s just awesome.” The first Fight 4 Victory event included police officer Rob Crawford, businessmen Chris Bowater, Scott Gibbons and Andrew Marriot, then-mayor Aldo Miccio and Nelson Tasman Tourism’s Loren Heaphy, also of The Block NZ fame, as well as local sporting stars and other businesspeople. Nelson businesses are banding together in an effort to paint the city pink. The Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust has teamed up with several local businesses to raise awareness of the trust and its big funding, the Boot Camp for Breast Cancer, which is on November 16. Local cafes, Vanilla, Bridge St Collective, Red and Fords, together with the Artisan Bakery will be donating funds from sweet treats sold throughout the month, and local bars, Harrys, Fords, Café Affair and Rhythm & Brown, have all created pink cocktails for the occasion. Kate Donaldson from KO Cosmetics at Jays & KO, has created a limited edition pink lip-gloss and Benjamin Black Goldsmiths will be auctioning a custom-designed pink ring

Businesses get behind St John’s duck race A flotilla of 1000 ducks will race down the Maitai River this Sunday to raise money for St John Nelson. Tickets are now on sale for 1000 small, numbered ducks that will race for fantastic prizes, including $1000 travel voucher for the first small duck across the finish line. Tickets are $10 each and ticket holders are not required to be at the race to claim prizes. A new addition this year is the Corporate Duck Challenge, where businesses can buy a large plastic duck to dress, decorate and even modify, for a $200 donation to St John. Large ducks will be judged for “best dressed duck” and race for some great prizes. Work to strengthen the Energy Centre at Founders Heritage Park has been finished in time for this month’s Nelson Arts Festival. Energy Centre closed Founders Park has received a big blow, with its largest function room now closed, due to its risk to occupants in an earthquake. But the good news, is that work to strengthen it will only take two months. The Energy Centre hosts several major events in Nelson, including the recently finished Founders Book Fair, Marchfest and it is also used during the Nelson Arts Festival. Confirmation of the closure was made late yesterday afternoon by Nelson City Council chief executive Clare Hadley and is another blow to event organisers in the region. It joins the Trafalgar Centre as a major function venue closed due to its risk in the event of a major earthquake. The Nelson Hospitality Awards is one of three functions that has already been told it will have to find a new venue because of the

closure. Its organisers are expecting around 350 people and said the closure has “created a big problem”. “Because of the numbers, it creates a headache. There are only a handful of venues that can cater for 200-plus people and it’s now incredibly short notice for us. We had already ordered our tickets, hired tables and seats and picked out decorations. So it’s not ideal,” says one of the event’s organisers. Clare says the cost to bring the Energy Centre up to earthquake standard isn’t high, but a report noting the closure will be presented at the council’s works and infrastructure committee meeting this Thursday. She says the building will be open before the Nelson Arts Festival in October.

It was a bluebird day at the More FM Rainbow Family Snow Day over the weekend. Delighted children gathered around the games tent for snow bulls-eye, a lolly scramble, sledding, and tug of war games at Rainbow Ski Area. The weather also made for optimal snow machine conditions, and vice chair of the ski area, Hamish Neill, says punters enjoyed the most man made snow ever created there due to the combination of cold nights and fine days.

Cardboard challenge gets kids thinking Dinosaurs and monsters were brought to life at Richmond Mall on Saturday, when 40 children participated in the Global Cardboard Challenge. The Global Cardboard Challenge involves children building their own arcade game using cardboard, tape and recycled materials. The arcade games are built using a combination of maths and imagination, which one of the organisers, Leanne Pressman, says is “a great hands on project and gets children off the electronics”. Paper Plus and Richmond Mall donated supplies and spot prizes that were given out to the children during the course of the day. All arcade games built will be displayed and judged and a grand prize of $200 will be awarded to the winning game creator’s school at the Game Arcade Alley Extravaganza at Monty’s Sunday Market on October 12 from 10am. The Global Cardboard Challenge is organised by the Ministry of Inspiration, a local non-profit organisation that hosts educational events that focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

Brian is part of the Open team, which is the same team that placed third in the Australasian held in NZ last year. As a team that has shot well and works well together hopes are high for a good result, this is the strongest team to travel for a while. Kelly McGarry is either nuts, or just has plenty of them. Either way, his day job continues to thrill people around the world, the majority of whom would be too terrified to try it themselves. Kelly’s latest high-octane thrillfest was on the rocky hills of Utah, where the world’s top free-ride mountain bike competition is held each year. The Red Bull Rampage is an invite-only event where the world’s top free riders come to show off their skills. It was the scene of Kelly’s famous back flip over a massive canyon last year. The three day event was cancelled in 2005, due to its danger to competitors. But it was re-instated in 2010 and Kelly says it is the premier event of the year for him. “It’s the wildest course on the tour by a long shot,” says Kelly, speaking to Nelson Weekly from a New York airport. “It doesn’t have the biggest crowd

Big Brother is watching

Every step you take, every move you make, 32 cameras will be watching you. Two years ago Nelson City Council upgraded the CCTV cameras that watch every inch of Nelson’s CBD and the man in charge of them, senior sergeant Shane Miles, says they’re priceless. The cameras record the central business district of Nelson 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The footage is recorded and stored for a period of time before being deleted. Shane says the cameras provide three main functions: a deterrent for offenders, the ability to watch the entire city at once when there

From that footage, he was identified and interviewed by police, says Shane. “And as it turned out, we were able to rule them out as the offender. So it works both ways.” Since the upgrade in September 2012, Shane says the quality is now much better and they’re able to use it in court cases as well. He says the network is likely to be expanded into the Victory area in the near future.

We don’t have to have police on every corner.” He says there’s been no privacy concerns about the cameras as it’s standard practice worldwide. “Overall, most people want to be safe. If nothing has happened it just gets deleted, we don’t go back through it to see who’s had coffee with who.” The cameras are monitored by volunteers from the Nelson Community Patrol every Friday and Saturday night and during large events, like the arts festi-

Latest cycle trail already a tourism boost The newest section of the Tasman Great Taste Trail from Mapua to Kaiteriteri will be officially opened this Saturday, but it is already creating some exciting opportunities for the region’s tourism operators. The first stage of the coastal section of the cycle trail, from Nelson to Mapua, was opened in January last year. Now the trail has been extended through to Kaiteriteri and chief executive of one of the region’s biggest tourism operators, Darryl Wilson of Wilsons Abel Tasman, says that’s transformed the trail into a top tourist attraction. Darryl, who is an original member of the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust, says

That’s right, we need people posting on Twitter using #gigatownnsn in every post. Your post should be about the competition, about what winning gigabit fibre could do for Nelson and you, or about how Nelson and you would use new technology.

Bus trip could expand to new areas It took Nelson’s double-decker bus two trips to take families from Victory to a special event at the Elma Turner Library last Thursday – and its success could see the idea spread to other suburbs. The free event, run by Nelson Public Libraries in partnership with the Victory Community Centre, aimed to introduce the Victory community, particularly parents and caregivers, to the library. There was a big welcome and tour, followed by lots of activities for children and adults, including arts, crafts and stories, plus a grownup story time and the opportunity for people to join the library. Nelson City councillor Gaile Noonan was at

the event and was impressed by the number of people who took up the offer of a free bus ride to the library. “I think it is a major increase on what they thought they’d do, but the Victory community is quite close and I suppose word got around.” She says the aim was to introduce more people to the library and it worked, with more than 50 applications for new library cards. “I think, given this success, they’d be looking at other things, maybe different areas. How about Atawhai or Stoke communities coming in? Or even going to other places, like Founders or Broadgreen House?” The trip was held to coincide with the school holidays.

Crime down across region

Total crime for the Tasman Police District has fallen by 2.9 per cent, announced police last week. Crime statistics for the district, which covers Marlborough, Nelson Bays and the West Coast, show the total number of recorded offences is at the lowest level since electronic records began in 1995-96. Serious assaults resulting in injury have reduced for the second consecutive year and have hit a nine-year low. Public place assaults have also continued the downward trend and have hit a 12-year low, and there has been a significant reduction in dwelling assaults. Recorded burglary offences have risen, with dwelling burglaries up. Tasman District Commander Superintendent Richard Chambers, says the figures highlighted an area that would see increased focus. “Burglaries, along with vehicle thefts, are our volume crime areas and we have a range of work under way to address this. We’re also working closely with the community to ensure people understand the need to take all practical steps to protect their property..” Public Order Offences were also down across the board, with Nelson Bays recording a 26.5 per cent drop.

BACK or NECK PAIN? New hope for long term If you suffer from Back or Neck Pain then come and see us at the Nelson Home and Garden Show 10-12 October at the Saxton Event centre, 10am - 5pm outside site, in the white Back Pain Gazebo.

In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment. We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. After more than seven years in NZ there are now enough people using the Teeter Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts that “these really do work” if you suffer from Back or Neck Pain or simply just want to age healthily, bring this ad along for a free 10 minute treatment. “I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised!”

Back pain sufferers Inversion Therapy is rapidly gaining a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started seven years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trip eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible”, “I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief ”. To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more. “We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it maintains the health of the brain as we all get older. INZ now have a division putting them into Industry as Back Pain costs companies a considerable amount of lost production. Both Dave and Nancy will be attending the show, Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain”, “that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “we let the tables do the talking” Come along to the Nelson Home and Garden Show this weekend for a treatment, if you have completely resigned yourself to having Back Pain for the rest of your life, the chances are you will be pleasantly surprised. Editorial: Paid car parking not the problem On Thursday, Nelson City councillors will decide how car parking will be paid for in Nelson city. Whether it’s through the user-pays system that has been used for years, the ratepayerpays system trailled over the past three months under the guise of “free parking”, or a new way to encourage shoppers into the city while still gathering some revenue for the council. Facing pressure from retailers, the council decided to trial free car parking for three months this winter. That was extended until October 19, so councillors could consider analysis about free parking’s impact on increasing foot traffic and –

critically – spending. From the dozens of people I’ve spoken to about the issue, it’s clear that the cost of car parking isn’t the issue for the majority. It’s the inconvenience of the paid-parking system in Nelson. People arrive into the city, park their cars and then have to hunt for coins for the parking meter. Most of us use eftpos these days so often people have to head to a shop, use their eftpos card and ask for some cash out. By the time you get back to your car and pay for your ticket you’re already feeling a little frustrated. Then, you run your errands, do your shopping and sit down for that coffee or

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz lunch. Suddenly you’re out of time and you have to go and move your car and pay for another two hours. Or, as we’ve heard so often, people just get fed up and leave. That’s the problem. We make it so difficult for people to come into our city, relax, enjoy the environment and spend their money. There’s always the pressure of watching the clock. If the council installed barrier arms on the two biggest car parks, Buxton and

Tham Hazan, Francie Way, Maureen May and Judy Bailey, with some of the bits and pieces at the Boaties Jumble. Montgomery, then shoppers can grab a ticket on their way in and pay for the time they spend in the car park on their way out – similar to the system at Nelson Airport. The rest of the city can still have the traditional parking metres, with a two hour time limit to keep the flow of cars moving on the main streets. Barrier arms will solve the time problem, solve the hassle of finding coins and keep an important revenue stream for the council. After all, $1 per hour for car parking is extremely good value for money, mainly because Nelson is a great city to spend time in. Now let’s just make it easier for people to do that.

Pig hunting competitions are pretty common events around the top of the south, but Nelson North Country Club proved last weekend they are still on top when it comes to a successful hunt. Nelson North Country Club was one of the first organisations to start a hunting competition, and for 21 years the club’s annual hunting and fishing competition has not only been a major fundraiser for the club but has continued to bring locals, and even those further afield, together, in friendly rivalry to offer up the catch of the day. This year’s sections included The Big Three, which was taken out by the McCarthy Team with their 41.4kg stag, 39.2kg boar and 7.4kg snapper along with the $1200 cash prize, the heaviest boar was Jamie Alleyne’s 57.2kg beast, earning him $400, and Jack Weaver took home $500 for his 41.32kg average boar. The kids section was well supported with a number of prizes handed out, including Brooke Merrion’s heaviest fin fish, Aleisha Strange for the heaviest goat, Jamie Muncaster for the mixed bag, and Ryan and Jayden Glough for the most possums caught, of which there were 14. After a successful kid’s afternoon featuring face painting, balloons and a bouncy castle, the pig hunt carried on till one in the morning, thanks to some fantastic entertainment by Anthony Neal’s Dog on a Bonnet. Event organisers would like to thank all their sponsors, both major and small, for their support in making the day a huge success.

National Chess comp comes to Nelson

The National Inter-school Chess Championships came to Nelson last weekend for three days of serious competing. Organised and run by Aucklandbased Chesspower, the tournament took the best players from around New Zealand and brought them to Stoke's Annesbrook Church, in a bid to find the national chess champions for junior, intermediate and senior school divisions. Nelson College’s Lun Tan, Alex Weber and Seth Whittington all finished within the top 30 in the individual senior section, while Nelson College came sixth in the senior team division. The top team was Auckland International College. Nelson was represented by 23 competitors, in a combined tournament of 89 players from Auckland to Invercargill. Chesspower has been running for four years now and, along with organising the national competitions, also runs the New Zealand Chess Academy.

AUCTION DATE, TIME & PLACE: TUESDAY 28 OCTOBER ‘14 6.30 PM AT WAIMEA OLD BOYS CLUB ROOMS (Jubilee Park) GLADSTONE RD, RICHMOND Cash/Eftpos bar available

On Monday last week, police across New Zealand took time to remember their colleagues who have been killed in the line of duty. Here in Nelson, we held a ceremony in front of the police station with a gathering that included retired officers, family members and our current staff. A long list of all those who have gone to work and never returned home at the end of the day was called out. It was a very poignant reminder of the risks our officers can face on a daily basis. It is unthinkable that any of our local police officers might be killed while working to protect our communities. I know there must be many wives, husbands and partners of officers who have had sleepless nights, wondering if their loved ones are safe. A second list was called out of all those serving police or employees who have died in the last year. Hearing those names was particularly poignant for me, as The Police Retwo of the people on it membrance Day were former colleagues pin. of mine and were both fantastic people and dedicated officers. At this time, we also wear the Police Remembrance Day Pin to honour the memory of those slain officers. The Remembrance Day pin is a Hui feather with the police chevron incorporated in it. The design symbolises the honouring of someone special, now lost to the police. Any donations raised from the pin go to the Police Families Charitable Trust, for the families of New Zealand police officers slain while carrying out their police duties.

The Harbour Master’s

diary

It’s coming up to the spring and summer season once again, and that’s the time to be on the water. The surprising thing is how often people are caught out by the weather, a lack of fuel, a lack of maintenance or a lack of preparation. Before the rush of blood hits the head and you're half way along the motorway, dragging the tinnie behind you, STOP for a few moments and think about the preparation you have been through (if any). Did you change the fuel from last year? Fresh fuel helps the engine run better and lubricates as it goes. Did you replace the flares that were expired? Recently, I was on a friend's boat and his flares expired in 1997. They had become as dangerous as a hand grenade. Another friend of mine seriously burnt himself letting off a similarly-aged flare. Is the boat waterproof? There is nothing I could think of as more embarrassing than launching your boat, just to feel it sinking beneath you as the timbers had dried out and shrunk because they had been out of the water so long. Maybe even the bungs don’t fit properly. Have the batteries to your radio, torch, or engine gone flat? Maybe if you’d replaced them the trip would have got started… And another thought: are your lights battery-operated? Do you even have lights? The fine for not having them is greater than the cost of buying some, so to not have them could be considered stupid. To operate in the dark where you can’t be seen without lights could be considered stupid. Are you stupid? Life jackets. It’s a favourite of mine because one could have saved the life of a friend of mine. Did you realise that in the year 2013 as many as 19 people drowned. We know that 10 of those 19 would have survived if they had been wearing a lifejacket. Ensure your lifejacket is in good condition, the gas bottle is not rusted if it’s inflateable, the stitching is

not worn and most importantly: check that it fits properly. Children have drowned because they were wearing lifejackets too big for them. That’s also stupid. On any journey you undertake you should carry at least two forms of communication, a vhf radio, a cellphone in a waterproof bag, flares, air horn, even a mirror can be used to attract attention, or a personal EPIRB. I could not help but laugh when I witnessed someone launch their anchor into the air just to see the anchor warp (rope) break, even before the anchor hit the water. When was the last time you replaced your anchor rope or checked the knots or shackles that join the anchor to the chain, the chain to the rope. Don’t forget to tie the other end to the boat. Engineers were sent to us by whoever you might believe in, so that we didn’t have to skin our own knuckles trying to change a spark plug. Ensure your engine is professionally-serviced and tuned so that it can be relied on. The local coastguard made many rescues last year as people had ignored their engine. So ensure you know the Boating Safety Code. 1. Life Jackets: take them – wear them. 2. Skipper is responsible - the skipper is responsible for the safety of everyone on board and for the safe operation of your boat. 3. Take two separate waterproof ways of communicating. 4. Check the forecast and keep checking whilst you’re out. 5. Avoid alcohol – safe boating and alcohol do not mix. There are many must haves on your boat, lifejackets, radio, anchor and warp, a secondary means of propulsion (engine, paddles), bucket or bailer, flares and warm clothes, , fire extinguisher, knife, tools, spare fuel, spare bung, rope, and first aid kit. Safe Boating this summer – Enjoy it! Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Our Makos on top

Nelson is guaranteed to host one more Tasman Makos game this season after they confirmed a top two finished with a suburb win over Canterbury on Saturday.

Tasman play a Sonny Bill Williams-boosted Counites Manukau this Sunday in Blenheim, if they win that, they could be top seed. That would mean a home semi-final in Nelson

and if they were to win that, a home final in Blenheim. It's a remarkable achievement for the Makos as it's their first season in the top-flight ITM Cup premiership.

The Nelson Bays Under 13 rep rugby team has had an outstanding season, winning the Seddon Shield for wins against Buller and Marlborough. But they also upset the odds by beating a combined Canterbury side last week. The team is now fundraising to play a couple of matches in the lower North Island, in October next year. A quiz night at Speights Ale House will take place on November 3. They are also looking for sponsors. Anyone interested please contact Jud on 021449352.

Triathlete prepares for world Ironman championships

Things have been hotting up for triathlete Murray Tewnion as he prepares for the World Ironman championships in Kona, Hawaii. Murray had been getting on his bike for six hour rides, and out of bed for early morning swims, throughout the Nelson winter, to prepare for his ninth Ironman. And now he has gone from one extreme Nelson triathlete Murray Tewnion is competing in the Ironman World champs in Kona, Hawaii, to another as he flew into Hawaii this weekend. However, Murray says he will have had two weeks to acclimatise to Kona's infamous heat with the race scheduled for this Sunday (New Zealand time). McKinnon, about training for the heat, and he told me about passive acclimation and suggested I spend some time in the sauna. The first time I went in there I only lasted 20 minutes but now I'm up to 45, so I'm getting used to the heat. "If there's nobody else in there I jog around a bit too. Anyone who looks in and sees me must think I'm mad." Although Murray, who competes in the M60-65 age group, is a vastly experienced long distance triathlete and qualified for the world champs in a fast 11 hours and 8 minutes, he admits Kona will be new territory because of the hype and the heat. He will be lining up alongside more than 2000 competitors and will have to endure temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius, as well as 90 per cent humidity, as he swims 3.8 kilometres, bikes 180km and runs 42.2km. "I talked to Britta Martin about the heat and she said 'take your time' and don't go out too fast. I'm relatively strong on the bike so I'll be aiming to get off the bike in good shape for the run and then I'll just be focusing on finishing.'
