Home brew champ gets to share his beer When Stoke home brewer Dale Holland first tasted his Belgian Pale Ale he was a pretty happy man – when that same brew won him a national award, he couldn’t believe his good fortune. But the good news was only just beginning for Dale, who this Friday will see his award winning beer flow from taps around the region thanks to local brewery, Sprig & Fern.

“I’m just so excited about it, it’s been an amazing experience seeing what it takes to produce a beer in quantities like this,” says Dale. Dale has only been brewing beers seriously for a little over a year and often pops into the Sprig & Fern Brewery in Richmond for ingredients and advice. NEWS IN BRIEF Doggy rules passed onto local students • A ceremony will be held on Tuesday June 21 to open the new Stoke Community Oral Health Clinic. After a blessing at a dawn ceremony Stoke’s new Oral Health Community Clinic on Nayland Primary School site will be officially opened at 9.30am. The new oral health clinic dental will service 3000 children in the Stoke area. The clinic replaces School dental clinics in the area. The first patients are expected to be seen in the new clinic in early July. • Nelson City Council’s annual plan will be adopted this Thursday at a full council meeting. The plan will come into effect from July 1. • Nelsonians will help kick off the international day of action against offshore oil drilling this Saturday at Tahunanui Beach. Hands across the Sand events are planned in at least nine locations throughout the country, with the Nelson event starting at 12noon. The event gives people the opportunity to join hands and draw a line in the sand to say no to expanded fossil fuel extraction, say organisers.

Students at Nelson Intermediate have been brushing up on their dog etiquette, and teacher Sue Ford says she would like to see other schools take her lead. Sue, a former Vet nurse, has been running an animal welfare programme for her class which includes educating students about behaviour of dogs, cost and responsibility of owning a pet, and how to approach an unfamiliar dog. “I read with interest the articles and letters about dogs running free in Nelson Weekly and it was exactly what we have been talking about in school. A dog is still an animal and you never know when it could snap, so this is very topical for us.” Dog control officer at Nelson City Council, Sandy Vale spoke to the 11 and 12 year-olds about what to do in the event of a dog attack and how to approach a dog. Sue says the children got a big kick out of the programme. “We’ve visited the SPCA, a vet clinic and Natureland, which they have really enjoyed. They are learning that owning a pet is a big responsibility.”

Home brew champ gets to share his beer FROM PAGE 1 “The judges liked the way I’d created something a bit different – putting a New Zealand spin on a Belgian Pale Ale by using locally grown Motueka hop flowers,” he says. Tracy and fellow Sprig & Fern Brewery co-owner David Barrett were so impressed with Dale’s award winning brew they offered him the opportunity to scale his recipe up to commercial quantities, giving beer lovers the chance to try it as a limited release at Sprig & Fern taverns throughout the Nelson region. Tracy and Dale, a programmer in his day job, have worked together on the recipe for the bigger brew. Tracy says it’s been a real buzz for them to make Dale’s beer and to see him get a taste of commer-

cial brewing. “Dale’s a very good home brewer but we’ve seen him develop his passion and produce something that’s really professional, he captured a particular beer style, which is essential in today’s craft beer market,” she says. “It’s created interest from a distributor in Christchurch so we hope to see Dale’s Belgian Ale go nationwide.” Dale and Tracy agree the brew is a win-win for both Dale and the Sprig & Fern Brewery, and also for their malt supplier Cryer Malt, who went the extra mile to source the specialty malts required. “I couldn’t believe I’d won the national competition and I found it just as hard to believe the generosity of Tracy and her team.” Dale’s Belgian Ale will be launched in all five Sprig & Fern taverns at 4pm, Friday 24 June.

TUESDAY 21 June 2011

Local businesses get right in behind Rugby Nelson city businesses are showing their excitement ahead of the Rugby World Cup coming to town, with dozens taking the time to dress their window. And even more say they will get theirs done before judging starts next Monday, 27 June. The Nelson City Council and Nelson Weekly competition is to celebrate the four teams playing in Nelson for this spring’s tournament and the 50,000 fans that are likely to travel to the city to watch them. The winner of the competition will also win a $2000 advertising prize in Nelson’s only locally owned newspaper, Nelson Weekly. Nelson mayor and one of the judges for the competition, Aldo Miccio says he is thrilled to see businesses showing their support for the world cup. “It’s great people are getting excited, it will be a fantastic event and Nelson is already showing what a great host it will be.” The city has been divided into quadrants for the competition, each “supporting” one of the four teams to play in Nelson – Italy, Russia, Australia and the United States. One local business owner says the competition is a “fantastic idea”. For more information businesses can contact Nelson Weekly on 548 4949.

Commission backs amalgamation FROM PAGE 1 Richmond, have 16 councillors, seven from Nelson, three from Richmond, two from Motueka, two from Waimea/Moutere and one each from Murchison/Lakes and Golden Bay. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne has been opposed to amalgamation for some time and didn’t change his stance after the announcement. “I still have concerns over rural representation, but I would urge people to read the report fully and decide for themselves what they think is best. If we do go to a poll I hope it happens quickley or it leaves both councils in a very uncertain state heading into long term plans. Cost savings will run into the millions each year, says Aldo, but more importantly the region will be able to move forward in a collective approach he says. “For the last 20 years we have been trying

to do shared services to benefit the region, but the ultimate shared service is having one council, one CEO, one set of staff. That has now been recognised.” For Aldo, the announcement has ended a long campaign that has cost him “tens of thousands” of his personal money and left him public enemy number one in certain parts of Tasman, with nicknames like “Miccio Mouse” directed his way. But he says it is worth it if the region can “get back on the map”. Submissions are now open on the draft proposal, closing on August 19. The commission will then read the submissions and make its final decision. If it decides that amalgamation is still the best way forward for the region it will go to a vote. A majority in both regions will need to vote for amalgamation for it to go ahead. Full details are available at www.lgc.govt.nz.

WOW! 13 Nelson finalists make cut Designers from right across the Top of the South have entered this year’s Brancott Estate World of WearableArt™ Awards Show, says competition director Heather Palmer. The Brancott Estate WOW Awards Show is now in its 23rd year and is a world-renowned event showcasing works of art designed to be worn on the human form. This year’s shows, from 25 August to 10 September, will be brought to life in a stunning choreographed performance featuring the full

company of Royal New Zealand Ballet dancers, professional dancers from Wellington’s Footnote Dance and the entire first year of the New Zealand School of Dance. There have been 13 entrants from Nelson, one from Golden Bay and two from Motueka. Successful finalists will be notified this week. There are seven main category sections in WOW 2011, and Heather says the entries into the Air New Zealand Kiwi Icons section have particularly

impressed the judges. “Overall, this year’s designs are superb, and there are some clear stand outs in all categories,” she says. “Across all categories, there are also wonderful stories of those who found both solace and inspiration while making their garment this year,” Heather says. Joining WOW Founder Suzie Moncrieff on the judging panel are fashion designer Trelise Cooper and artist Nigel Brown, who finished the first round of judging last weekend.

St John helps people brush up on CPR skills

Learning or brushing up on potential life saving skill is the aim of St John’s CPR-a-thon held at the Richmond Mall this week. St John Nelson is holding the event as part of the St John Flash-a-light Appeal week from 11am – 1pm at the Mall until Saturday. “We want to teach everyone the three basic steps of CPR which could help them save a life”, says St John tutor, Tarmra Heal. “This is a great opportunity for people to come along and have a go. St John “3 Steps for Life” trainers will demonstrate CPR and encourage people to practice on manikins. “We want everyone to practice two minutes of CPR if they can”, says Tarmra. During the week of CPR St John in Nelson are aiming to beat an unofficial world record of 70,000 chest compressions. Local MP hits election campaign

The Harbour Master’s

diary

• This week the large container ship Ocean Bright (175 m LOA) came and went. She was one of four, a tanker, a cement ship, 10 large fishing vessels, and a special ship for the carriage of fruit, that kept the pilots, stevedores and floating plant very busy. • I was asked by young an 8 year-old boy, Oliver , what the lighthouse on the boulder bank was for and why didn’t it work anymore? The first answer was easy - commissioned in 1862, the light house was for guiding ships to the port entrance, the second answer, Oliver, I can only advise that I have learned the lighthouse was decommissioned (turned off) in 1982. It was its 120th birthday. The reason I believe it was turned off was because of the back scatter of the lights of Nelson creating confusion as to which was the real light. • I was lucky enough to be at the boat ramp recently where I saw Paul and his crew donning their lifejackets before they left the safety of the ramp. Well done Paul and crew, a great example of safe boating. • A jet skier on his last run before the winter rest was rescued in the harbour as his ski was sinking slowly and all electrics wet. He had left his grab bag in the car, - radio, cell-phone, flares - because it was only going to be a short trip. If he had been outside the harbour it may have been a lifelong one. Always take some signalling device. Remember, if in doubt - don’t go out, Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Nelson MP Nick Smith began his campaign to regain his Nelson electrate with a door-knocking blitz in Stoke on Saturday. Nick launched his Nick4Nelson re-election campaign for 2011 on Saturday with a series of door step meetings in Stoke. “I enjoy meeting and talking with people. Street campaigning offers a great opportunity to share ideas and get a feel for where public opinion sits on a whole raft of issues.” Nick has represented Nelson since 1996, prior to that KNOCK KNOCK: Local MP Nick Smith shakes hands with was MP for Tasman 1990 – 96, and is Minister in Stoke resident Jenny Reneti. Arts Festival preparing for ‘biggest year ever’ The Nelson Arts Festival team is up to full strength in readiness for what is predicted to be its biggest year ever, as Rugby World Cup 2011 and the South Island Masters Games visitors swell audience numbers. Producer of the Arts Festival Sophie Kelly has taken over the programming of the festival shows, after the resignation of long serving festival director Anabel Norman. Sophie says she is very excited about her new role. “Having managed the festival for Nelson City Council for the last two years, I am really excited to be working on the selection of shows that will appeal to our audiences.” The Nelson Arts Festival this year runs for an extended season, as it is part of the RWC 2011 Game On Festival. It kicks off with the Nelson Masked Parade, which has the theme Playful Pacific. Sophie says the programme showcased New Zealand talent for international visitors, while still bringing some offshore shows to Nelson. The full programme will be launched in early August.

Sharpening up on cooking skills A dozen local men are cleaning up on their cooking skills thanks to a local organisation. Nelson Budget Service is currently running a Get Cooking course for older men out of Presbyterian Support in Stoke. Get Cooking is about cooking from scratch on a budget, but nutrition is the most important part, says Judith Crowley, of Nelson Budget Service. “These guys have quite a high skill level. So it is just expanding what they already know. Some of these men are widowers, single or have parents in

care. So suddenly they have to cook and some of them have said it hasn’t been their territory. They have often helped in the kitchen or know one or two dishes but it hasn’t been an area they usually know too well.” Get Cooking is also run by various other organisations in Nelson but Nelson Budget Service decided to focus on men and will next run a six week course for younger men. Jude says the courses are great fun with the cooks able to eat their creations at the end of each class before having to do the down side – dishes.

LETTERS

TO THE EDITOR

Problems, problems, problems. As evidenced by your excellent paper we most certainly have a dog problem. If my recollections are correct we also have problems with alcohol, kids with nothing to do, boy racers, no performance centre, traffic, high rates, air pollution, and many other problems I have forgot but which Nelsonians seem quick and happy to complain about. What a terrible place we live in. Be better off in Christchurch... Tim Monck-Mason, Nelson. Recently your paper published a photo and write-up of a national Award won by Altrusa International of Nelson for our Birthday with a Difference. We wish to thank Nelson Weekly for their attention and say how much we appreciate the attendance at any time day or evening, weekends included, of their photographer/reporter who records local events in excellent detail. Phone calls to the office are answered promptly – what more can we say except well done to the staff of Nelson Weekly, it’s great to have an enthusiastic, locally-owned paper serving our busy community. Di Cressey, Altrusa International Inc. of Nelson. There is a huge arrogance that comes with dog ownership. At the educated level, a typical owner acquires a respectable breed, feeds and raises it decently in a good home, and assumes it will never hurt anybody. At the rougher less educated level, dog breeds are often less respectable and mongrel, treated badly with irregular routine and feeding and quite often beaten for punishment, and again the owner assumes the dog would never hurt anybody. I had a dog that was the classic family pet, great with kids, soft and loving to all, the kind you always would say wouldn’t hurt a fly. He later shocked us all by biting a lady outside a primary school as she was quite confidently patting his head and saying how lovely he was. Without the slightest provocation or warning from the dog, he had broke her middle knuckle and nearly taken her thumb off! The sickly realisation of the situation is shocking, but it haunts you to think what if it had been a child. Dog owners should never think that they know their dogs, because any dog can bite at any time without the slightest warning. Please show some respect for non-dog people. Why should we have to feel intimidated when out walking with our children, we can’t take the chance if a dog bites our child that’s that, you may be fined or lose your dog, but you don’t have to live with the pain and fear of the victim for their whole life. I am with you all the way on this Liam... and do carry a knife and I would do everything in my power to avoid being the dad who has to watch as his kids face is ripped off! Mat, Nelson.

It’s often said that volunteers make the world go round but they also contribute massively to our economy says Volunteer Nelson. And this week is all about recognising all volunteers do in our community, helping people, organisations, and often saving lives. This week is National Volunteer Awareness Week – and with thousands of volunteers in Nelson across art, health, social services and sports – it is the perfect opportunity to thank the wonderful work our volunteers do. In this feature on Volunteer Awareness Week, dozens of local groups have shown their appreciation for their volunteers by giving a small message of thanks. Jude McNabb of Volunteer Nelson

says volunteers contribute 8.7 per cent of the national GDP, but it is what they contribute to each community that makes them so special. “Volunteers make a huge difference to our community and for all the right reasons.” Some of the reasons behind people volunteering are learning new skills, getting to know a new community, to give back to an organisation or club, pass on skills to children or for some people it is a good reason for them to get out of bed and give them something to do. In Nelson, we also celebrate the work our youth volunteers do with the annual Youth Volunteer Awards, which is now in its seventh year. Approximately 80 young people have been nominated

Ross McPhie scored much more than just one goal on his Nelson Suburbs debut. He also scored a trip to the United States. The 14 year-old Nelson College student has been selected in the Wellington Tornadoes academy squad for its tour of the US in December, after the academy’s coach, Guy Smith, read about Ross’ goalscoring Chatham Cup debut in the Nelson Weekly. Despite his young age and small stature, Ross spends his Saturday afternoons tackling adults in the Nelson Pine Industries first division for the Nelson Suburbs first XI, a development side for the Mainland Premier League team. But last month, the youngster was called up in to the first team in its Chatham Cup opening round clash with FC Nelson. Ross was a second half substitute and scored in the 4-1 victory. His performance caught the eye around Nelson, and in the country’s capital, as it appears. Ross was invited to Wellington to check out the Tornadoes academy for what was essentially a trial. “Any kid that is scoring goals in the Chatham Cup is worth a look,” says Guy. “I know that these sorts of opportunities come up less often for players outside the main centres, so I thought it might be something exciting for Ross.” Guy says Ross had a number of great attributes but his movement and intelligence off the ball is his greatest asset. “He’s got a natural sense for combining with other players that looks like it’s been refined by some good coaching over the years. So whoever those coaches are they’ve done great work in my view.” The month-long tour is highlighted by the ESPN Disney Soccer Showcase and then followed by matches against the academies of MLS clubs Chivas USA and Real Salt Lake, a handful of local clubs and a final stop at the MLK Cup in Las Vegas. The Disney tournament is played in front of more than 800 college coaches and scouts. At each stop, the players will spend time at US Colleges, where they will speak to athletes and coaches about student life as an athlete in America. The opportunity is intended to give players a pathway through the US system, a successful avenue that has developed All Whites Ryan Nelson, Simon Elliott, Michael Boxall and Jake Gleeson, to name a few. “We lay it all out in front of them at an age where they can do something about achieving it.” Ross says he was “pretty happy” to earn selection. “Just the level of the tournaments will just be a lot bigger experience.”

RISING STAR: Nelson Suburbs midfielder Ross McPhie has secured spot in the Wellington Tornadoes squad for its tour of the United States. He has to raise $8000 for the tour. If anyone in interested in sponsoring Ross, they can phone his father, James, on 5467583. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

IN BRIEF TRAIL RUNNING: Escape from Tane’s Forest takes center stage this weekend, in the stunning surrounds of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. The event, which begins as at Nelson’s 1862 ‘railtrail,’ which started as New Zealand’s first railway, contains both a short, 13km, course and a long, 23km, course. ATHLETICS: Alex Jordan headed to Europe on the weekend hoping to break the New Zealand senior men’s 400m record. Alex ran a hand timed 46.4 second 400m in training last week, a personal best equaling time. He will be based in Northern Paris before competing in a number of competitions, including the British champs in Bedford. The current New Zealand record is 46.09 seconds. The former Nayland College student won a winter track meet in Auckland with a time of 47.11 seconds before heading for France.

Marist to face Waimea, again Coming off a gruelling 9-8 win over Stables Waimea Old Boys on Saturday table-topping Wakatu Hotel Marist get to do it all over again this Saturday, only this time it matters. Marist will host Waimea at Tahunanui this weekend in the first semi final of the Car Company division one club

rugby championship. Waimea were fired up for last Saturday’s game, needing a win to secure them a place in the post-season but Marist were safe in the knowledge they were top qualifiers and would host a semi final no matter what the result was. Waimea took the lead at half time scor-

ing a try and penalty with the wind at their backs. Marist went one better with the advantage through, three James Proctor penalty goals enough to see them home and keep up the momentum heading into this weekend’s game. Waimea snuck through to the finals after Riwaka failed to beat Huia.

CROSS COUNTRY: Nelson’s depth proved successful at the New Zealand secondary school cross-country championships at the Tinwald Domain in Ashburton during the weekend. A number of relay teams finished with top five placings. Nelson College for Girls’ senior three person relay team finished third place. Brittany Stewart’s 13th placing along with Philippa Dalley’s 14th and Emma Dallison’s 31st combined to take bronze. The junior girls team of Claire Erasmus, Jessica Martin and Maddie Stanley finished fourth. Mike Lowe of Nelson College was the best of the individual places. He finished tenth in the senior boys race with a time of 19 minutes 37 seconds.

It’s business time again. Accessman Stoke, the two-time defending champions, have reached the Car Company division one playoffs. But it’s not the first time it has slipped under the radar, despite its name on the etched in to the silverware. A heavy 71-5 defeat to Galbraith Group Nelson at Greenmeadows wasn’t the best dress rehearsal going in to this weekend’s rematch. But with only 16 fit players, 12 were out injured, captain Shaun Begg says he was “proud” of the typical Stoke attitude not to give up in trying circumstances. “Most other clubs would have defaulted. But we put the jersey on with pride and we fronted the best we could. I’m proud of the effort but it was always going to be tough against a full strength Nelson team,” says Shaun. But the only outcome from the loss means the semi-final will be played away from home, at Neale Park. Standout openside flanker Tevita Koloamatangi

and first five Jack Umaga are both hopeful to play this weekend. Tevita, along with blindside flanker John Duff, have been the standouts for the season. But the former Tasman Makos halfback admits they can take “a lot more” out of the game than Nelson can, and will be boosted by a number of players returning to fitness in an injury-plagued season. “It’s definitely tested our depth, but we’ll be up for it in the semi-final, and we’ll benefit hugely in the future.” Two of the most promising talents in the side only made their division one debut this season. Hooker Nick Max and winger Brett Ferguson made the step up from Under-18 rugby with Nayland College to excel in their individual roles at the club. Despite playing in the front row, Nick has became one of the regular names on the points scoring tally. Sione Holani took the individual honour of top try scorer in the competition with ten tries. He remains the key exponent in Stoke’s push for final glory.

Stoke teams battle on in injury ravaged season It has been another successful year for the Accessman Stoke club on all levels. The second division side, also hampered by injuries, missed out on the playoffs after narrow a 17-8 loss to rivals Waimea Old Boys two weeks ago. But the young side had plenty of positives with a number of players putting their hands up as the season wore on. Inside back Chad Lowrie was everywhere and easily the player of the season. Whether it was setting up tries, scoring tries or nailing penalties from inside his own half, he can do it all. Flanker Martyn Young was another to impress with his work-rate. They take on Nelson this week, before the division one side’s semi-final. Super Liquor Stoke Reds have a culture second-to-none. The close knit unit, playing in the third division, have spent more time training at Greenmeadows than in any of the previous years. Captain Wayde Sinclair epitomizes the team’s attitude to attack from the anywhere and to enjoy the game. TJ Beazley has been a standout in the midfield. 40 players are registered for the Reds and always bring in a large fan base of family and friends. “The team has a special culture amongst them. They’re up there at Greenmeadows every

Tuesday and Thursday without fail. They’re really loyal to their team. Once a Reds player, always a Reds player,” says Jo MacLean. Stoke Women are consistently one of the top sides along with title holders Waimea Old Boys. But the Stoke side got the better of its biggest rivals the last time the two met, two weeks ago, with an impressive 22-8 win on home soil. Sallyanne Archibald and Catrina Nicholas have formed a strong partnership in the five-eighths positions and are hopeful of reclaiming the championship they won in 2008. Stoke currently lead the women’s table on 25 points. JAB Rugby is riding a huge wave of success with more than 200 registered players representing 14 teams this winter season. This is fantastic for the club as these aspiring All Blacks will one day be the stars of Stoke senior squads. Stoke has a proud history of staying local in player selection and many of the current senior squad players and coaches have came through the ranks as a Stoke junior. The level and skill these kids are playing at is rising every year and it’s great to see so many spectators out there supporting them on the cold mornings.

Stoke get punished in playoff dress rehersal Stoke need to shut down James Marshall. That will be one of the major talking points during training this week as Accessman Stoke suffered a 71-5 hiding to Galbraith Group Nelson, at Greenmeadows on Saturday. A semi-final date with Nelson was already penned in to the calendar for the coming weekend, but homeground advantage was the only prize on offer in the wet. The Tasman Makos first-five brought his A-game as he eased through the leaky Stoke defence, scoring a hat-trick in the rout. Injuries had starved the home-side of 12 players from the senior squad. Coach Jason Hulena even donned the playing strip with a shortage in the front row. But without Tevita Koloamatangi and Jack Umaga, arguably two of the team’s strongest players, Stoke struggled on defense, falling off tackle after tackle. Stoke’s only phase of dominant possession resulted in a try to young forward Nick Max, late in the second half. Stoke captain Shaun Begg says it was a day to forget, but is confident the side can turn it around this weekend. “I’m proud of the effort. The boys tried hard but it was going to be tough against a full strength Nelson team. We were way beyond full-strength but you have to give them credit for the win,” the skipper says. “We had no front rowers and he [Jason] is a front rower. That’s how desperate and stretched we are. Most clubs would have defaulted, but that’s not Stoke.” Hooker Jon Sharpe and Stu Tunnicliff had strong performances in the heavy defeat. But the side had no answers for James’ constant spark from pivot. CJ Webber struggled to contain his opposite. Andrew Goodman continued to nail the hammer in the coffin with a near-perfect kicking display. The second division side were defeated for the second week in a row, its faint playoff hopes dashed, as they went down 18-12 in a narrow loss to Huia. Forward Luke Bartlett scored a try as he continues to develop in the closing stages of the competition. Sami Sami also scored with Chad Lowrie nailing one conversion. Stoke will face Nelson in the final match of its sea-

Reds manager Tony Smith described the game in a waterlogged Motueka pitch as “a combination of rugby and water polo”. The Reds now face Marist in Tahunanui this weekend. Stoke Women keep hold of first place despite having the weekend off, after wet weather cancelled its clash with Marist. The two sides are pencilled in to play each other this weekend, although the competition schedule may change.
