I welcome you to ShuttleCork 2023!

We have so much to celebrate tonight! I don’t believe being together beneath the big tent is something we will ever again take for granted. There is magic in the opportunity to connect in a meaningful way, and how better to celebrate than to clink our glasses together in a toast?

Thank you for being here and for supporting what has, over the past decade, become the biggest annual fundraiser for the Nelson-Atkins. ShuttleCork is crucial to the support of our mission of keeping our doors open to everyone for free. Thanks to your generosity, we are also able to welcome hundreds of schoolchildren to the museum, in what we hope will be the beginning of their lifelong relationship with the arts.

My deepest gratitude goes to Mary Bloch, who has been our co-chair and leader from ShuttleCork’s inception 10 years ago, and her co-chair, Mark O’Connell, who is also a member of the museum’s Board of Trustees. They and their devoted committee have spent many hours planning this incredible fundraiser and we celebrate their hard work tonight.

The original idea of ShuttleCork was to combine appreciation of fine wine with fundraising and great art with a philanthropic goal. In just 10 years, it has exploded into the museum’s premier fundraiser and has, to date, raised more than $10 million for the Nelson-Atkins. It has grown to become one of the top fundraisers in the Kansas City area, which brings us enormous pride and gratitude. I am deeply moved by your continued generosity in supporting the museum with this fabulous and fun multi-day event.

Welcome to ShuttleCork

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 10th annual ShuttleCork! It hardly seems possible that this amazing fundraiser is now 10 years old. What began as an evening of savoring fine wine to benefit the Nelson-Atkins has grown into a multi-day powerhouse fundraiser that is consistently named one of the top in Kansas City. And over the past decade, ShuttleCork has raised more than $10 million to further the mission of the Nelson-Atkins in assuring free admission to everyone who visits.

This evening of fine wine, sumptuous food, and world-class art would not be possible without the devotion of so many contributors. A special thanks to former co-chair (and co-founder) Paul DeBruce, and also former co-chair Greg Maday. Their enthusiasm and commitment to the museum is an inspiration.

GREG QUIROGA STELLAR FUNDRAISING AUCTIONS

We welcome back Greg Quiroga as our auctioneer for another stellar year! San Francisco’s premier fundraising auctioneer, Greg has been conducting fundraising auctions for nonprofit organizations across the United States since 2004. He works with over 50 non-profits, schools, foundations, arts organizations, and charities to help raise over $15 million a year.

He also works with wine auctions nationwide, including the Sun Valley Wine Auction, the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta, TumTum Tree Foundation, MUST! Charities, the Manhattan Wine Auction, and the Guadalupe Center in Naples, Florida.

Greg always brings a fiery combination of passion, humor, and heartfelt engagement to the stage, but especially now as we all are returning to in-person events. “It is so rewarding to be able to engage people face-to-face to support a great cause,” Greg says, “and to remember that it is the human connection that brings us all together.”

The founder of Stellar Fundraising Auctions (www.StellarSF. com), Greg and his wife live in San Francisco with their son, Ryder, who sold his first auction lot when he was just four.

CONDITIONS OF PURCHASE

AUCTION PROCEDURES

1. Neither the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction nor Greg Quiroga (“The Auctioneer”) are responsible for the accuracy of the descriptions of auction lots contained in the catalog. The descriptions incorporate, in some instances, materials or descriptions furnished by donors. In particular, prospective bidders should inspect wines prior to bidding and make their own judgment with reference to the quality and value of such wines.

2. Any trips or events comprising all or part of an auction lot shall, unless otherwise specified in the catalog description, be subject to convenient scheduling by the lot donors and the successful bidder. In addition, unless otherwise specified, purchasers of events are expected to schedule the event to occur within twelve months of the Auction. Attention: Some trips and events are date specific and cannot be rescheduled. Purchasers may not transfer or resell events or trip lots.

3. All wine is sold on an “as-is” basis, and neither the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction nor The Auctioneer make any express or implied warranty or representation of any kind or nature with respect to any property included in an auction lot.

4. The Auctioneer shall have the absolute right to withdraw any auction lot, reject any auction bid, resolve any dispute with reference to any auction lot or any bid on any auction lot at any time before the fall of the hammer. No bid is valid unless acknowledged as such by The Auctioneer.

5. All wines sold at the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction are subject to the provisions of Missouri law and the regulations of the Missouri Department of Revenue.

6. Any property may be withdrawn by The Auctioneer or the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefore.

7. The Auctioneer and the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by The Auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, The Auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction’s records shall be conclusive in all respects.

TAX APPLICABILITY

Purchasers shall be required to pay all state and local retail sales taxes applicable on the date of sale. As a general rule, the Missouri sales tax shall apply to the full purchase price of all items included in auction lots but not to prices paid for trips or private events. All payments for auction lots shall be made to the Nelson Gallery Foundation. The Nelson Gallery Foundation is classified as a tax-exempt corporation under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). Bidders may be entitled to deduct a portion of their payments for auction lots as a charitable contribution, but each bidder should consult her or his attorney or tax advisor regarding such deductibility for state or federal income tax purposes. The Nelson Gallery Foundation will provide documentation as required by law following the auction.

PAYMENT AND PICKUP

1. Arrangements for payment for all auction lots shall be made following the conclusion of the Live Auction and confirmed before pick-up.

2. All payments must be made by cashier’s or certified check, or by Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. Company or personal checks will be accepted only upon submission of identification and credit responsibility satisfactory to the representative of the Nelson Gallery Foundation wine auction responsible for accepting payment.

3. Payment for separate lots under one bidder number may be combined.

4. The Nelson Gallery Foundation shall not be responsible for any lots left at the auction site.

5. Payments will be processed to the card registered with Computerized Auction Clerical Services on the Monday following the auction. For any special circumstances please email Emily Sanger at esanger@nelson-atkins.org.

LOT REMOVAL

Lots purchased at the auction must be picked up and removed by successful bidders, following payment. Please contact Emily Sanger to arrange pick-up at esanger@nelson-atkins.org.

Penta Tequila’s exceptional spirits are produced by five vintners who are experts in wine production and its nuances via different techniques to showcase every aspect of the agave and give the tequila its rich, seamless, and elegant texture to carry it across and coat the palate. ¡Salud!

Chef Jonathan Pye is an Alumni Executive Chef with the The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. His passion for cooking began at a young age in England. Born in Manchester, he is a graduate of the prestigious Kendal Culinary School. During his early career, Chef Pye worked in the kitchens of several top restaurants in England, including leadership of catering and events for a 16th-century hotel.

A YELLOWSTONE EXPERIENCE AT FLAT TAIL RANCH

Venture to Flat Tail Ranch for an unforgettable food, wine, and “ranching” event. You and your guests will participate in a roping demonstration and there may even be a friendly competition for your group! Chef Michael Smith will create a spectacular multi-course meal for everyone with themed wine pairings, including Tom Eddy 2016 Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Flat Tail Ranch is where understated elegance meets rustic refinement. Flanked by an antique red barn and gently rolling ridges where cattle graze and wade into sky-reflecting waters, the main house’s exterior reflects the warmth of nature with its hewn stone and timbers. One need only look just west of the main house to see a little piece of cowboy heaven: a horse-riding, cattle-roping-ready arena that is bigger than most; nearly the size of the Chiefs indoor training facility.

SCOTTSDALE DREAM

To start the adventure, enjoy your own private residence at The Rocks, a member-owned luxury residence club managed by Troon Golf. Located on approximately 22 acres of pristine Sonoran Desert and tucked in an area of secluded topography, The Rocks offers dramatic views of Pinnacle Peak, Troon Mountain, Four Peaks, and the McDowell Mountains.

The stay will begin with a lovely progressive dinner and spectacular sunset at the home of Carole and Bill Cobb in North Scottsdale’s Silverleaf neighborhood. Your group will then move to the home of Diane Canaday and Dan Hesse, also in Silverleaf. The evening will consist of fantastic wines from the Cobbs’ and Hesses’ personal cellars including Staglin, Kosta Browne, Screaming Eagle, and Taylor Fladgate vintage port to finish the evening. All courses will be prepared by Chef Mike Maitrel-Burgard.

Chef Mike is French and specializes in French Caribbean, Italian, and Mediterranean Cuisine. He has worked as an executive chef and private chef in Europe, New York City, the Hamptons, and now the Phoenix area, counting well-known celebrities as his clients. He is known for his creativity and use of fresh, quality ingredients.

To complete the weekend, you and your guests will experience the Phoenix Open Golf Tournament as a VIP at the Waste Management Open on Sunday, February 11, 2024.

Here is your chance to find out! We are pleased to offer at least four wines in this lot with 100-point scores and another six with 99 points. You can have your own dinner party to see if you can tell the difference!

Napa Valley is only 30 miles long and five miles across at its widest point. But it has an amazing variety of wines. This is because within this small area there are 16 different sub appellations which contain 33 different soil series. In addition to the top scorers, we’ve managed to curate a diverse array of the top wineries—it’s all here: verticals and horizontals, a true collector’s delight!

This lot comprises the ‘rarest of the rare’: Fewer than 500 cases of the 1987 Diamond Creek were produced—how many do you think are left?

THE RESTAURANT AT 1900 — RARE WINE DINNER

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 10 people to enjoy the rarest French wines from iconic vintages, paired with the exquisite food of Linda Duerr from The Restaurant at 1900.

The successful bidder and their guests will be welcomed with a magnum of 1975 Bollinger RD. The first course will be paired with twin bottles of 1992 Montrachet Grand Cru, one from Gagnard-Delegrange and the second from related-family parcel of Delagrange-Bachelet. They farm the vineyard together but divide up the grapes and vinify separately. You will move to red Burgundy in the middle course and compare the 1990 and 1999 Richebourg from Domaine de la Romanée Conti. The meat course is matched with 1985 Château Lafite Rothschild, then a 1985 Château Haut Brion, and finally a 1985 Cheval Blanc. All first growth Bordeaux, but one is Cabernet Sauvignon based, one Cabernet Franc, and one Merlot. Dessert will be accompanied by an exquisite bottle of 1975 Château d’Yquem.

The evening will be educational as well as memorable—wine commentary will be provided by Kansas City’s own Doug Frost, one of only four people in the world to hold both Master of Wine (MW) and Master Sommelier (MS) designations.

GRAND CRU BURGUNDY

Burgundy produces half the wine of Napa Valley and Grand Cru Burgundy is fixed at 2% of the total production. And Grand Cru White Burgundy is only 1/2 of 1% of all Burgundy produced. At a recent rare wine auction, Grand Cru Burgundy lots were 14 of the top 15 lots sold.

This lot, which consists of both White Grand Cru and Red Grand Cru, is your chance to own the rarest of the rare. Many of these wines are not available in the Kansas City market and, if they are, one can find only one or two bottles for the entire region.

Included in the lot are wines made by the top producers of these famous vineyards, including Christophe Roumier, Jean-François Coche and Jean-Nicolas Méo. While many of the wines are mature now, they will also age gracefully for years to come.

Jan Zakin of Zakin wines will fly into Kansas City to pour wines for a very special dinner, including Davis, Lithogy, Moon Tsai, Parallel, Westwood, and Zakin. Jan will also treat guests to a dessert wine, a 1990 Château d’Yquem, from her personal cellar. The winning bidder will receive automatic inclusion on the allocation lists for all wineries.

Family owned and operated by the Quillec family for nearly 20 years, Café Provence has been honored as one of the Top 100 Restaurants in the U.S., Top 10 French Restaurants in the U.S., and Best Restaurant in Kansas City. FUND-A-NEED

The welcome chatter of schoolchildren echoes through the hallways of the Nelson-Atkins, and our Learning & Engagement Division is hard at work creating lesson plans, activities, and tours for children of all ages.

Did you know? Since ShuttleCork’s inception, more than $10 million has been raised to support the hiring of educators who provide high-quality instruction, along with art materials that tiny hands meticulously use to create whatever their minds can conceive. In the 10 years since ShuttleCork began, nearly 1.5 million students, youth, teens, adults, families, and educators have been served by the Learning & Engagement Division.

Your support of Fund-a-Need also helps pay for field trip expenses, such as buses and substitute teachers. Each year, the Nelson-Atkins engages with nearly 55,000 students in the Kansas City metropolitan area. It is our mission to continue growing that number to attract more students each year and introduce them to rich and memorable art experiences.

The need is great. Children are our future. Twelve couples will enjoy dinner prepared by James Beard Awardwinning Chef Debbie Gold in one of the Nelson-Atkins’ most revered galleries, the 14th century French Cloister, paired with exquisite and highly acclaimed wines from Dana Estates.

Dana Estates is dedicated to making small lots of truly distinctive world class wines. Dana is a Sanskrit term meaning “the Spirit of Generosity.” Blending history and tradition with cutting edge vineyard management, a new state of the art winery and meticulous winemaking, Dana Estates strives to make the greatest wines possible. Jae Chun—President of Dana Estates—will pour a curated selection that evening to showcase the story and style of their esteemed wines.

Chef Debbie Gold is a James Beard Foundation award-winner and four-time nominee with a background in French cuisine and over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry. After receiving a graduate degree in restaurant management, she spent four years studying and working in some of the most famed kitchens in France. Gold attended Ecole Hoteliere Tain I’Hermitage and cooked for Michelin-starred restaurants. Upon returning to the States, Debbie continued her training with the legendary Charlie Trotter. Gold then turned her sights to Kansas City and opened her own restaurant with Michael Smith, 40 Sardines, which garnered Gold a coveted James Beard Foundation nomination for “Best New Midwest Restaurant.” She was also recognized by Bravo’s Top Chef Masters, battling against fellow award-winning chefs for two seasons. She is now a partner and chef of the recently opened LeTour in Chicago.

Experience an evening at Nighthawk with Lonnie McFadden, an American jazz trumpet player, tap dancer, singer, songwriter, arranger, and recording artist. McFadden is known for his exuberant multi-genre performance style.

Nighthawk is an elegant space in the basement of Hotel Kansas City, a bar focused on fast-friendly service, music, nostalgic comfort food, and drinks that make you want to dance.

Overseeing the culinary team is their Executive Chef Johnny Leach, who came to Kansas City via Portland, Oregon. The beverage program is led by Kansas native John Deemy. Nighthawk appreciates all genres of music and features live music and DJs, as well as a unique listening experience through custom-engineered, vintage Altec A5 speakers.
