Real Food Tradition Preserving Peppers in the Pocket By Marieke Meyer

8 insiders magazine |

SHOWCASING THE BEST OF TORONTO’S EAST END

If

you were anywhere near Ravina Crescent on the last Saturday of September, you couldn’t miss the heady scent of roasted red peppers. For the eigth year, a group of Pocket neighbours met at Rod Cohen and Clair Watson’s house to roast and bottle four bushels of peppers. For Rod, the tradition has been going on for many more years. He first became interested in roasting and preserving peppers when he had an Italian neighbour who taught him how to do it. Naturally, when he moved the Pocket, the autumn ritual came with him. Rod picks the date each year, depending on the maturity and quality of the peppers, which he has been keeping an eye on for weeks. Finally we all get the call to gather, and a troop of neighbours lugging barbeques, canning jars, and food and drink to sustain us for the day, march down the street to Rod and Clair’s house. Their daughter Tabitha was on hand to greet us with a free form dance to the music of her favourite song “La Bamba.”

And then the work began. The peppers’ red skins blackened under the intense heat of the barbeques as the cooks patiently turned them. After they were thoroughly and evenly burned, they went into a paper bag- a sort of mini sweat lodge for peppers. And of course, as they roasted, that heavenly smell permeated the neighbourhood. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, the table was covered with a plastic cloth, the air already steamy from the jars and lids being sterilized on the stove. When the bags of peppers had cooled, it was time for the next stage. We sat at the kitchen table- four or five of us at a time- and peeled away the black skin and removed the core and seeds from the peppers. Rod made sure that we saved as much sweet pepper juice as possible. Then all that carefully rendered juice and all the strips of succulent peppers went into a large sterile bowl, waiting to be jarred. That was Clair’s job. She ladled peppers and their nectar into the 10 insiders magazine |

bottles, and then processed them in boiling water for 20 minutes. It was hard, hot work, but somehow, there weren’t any complaints. Maybe the wine, beer and snacks helped. Maybe it was the neighbours who drifted in and out throughout the day, each with fresh stories and enthusiasm. Maybe it was the anticipation of sweet roasted peppers to savour all winter long that kept us going. In any case, before we knew it, all the peppers were in jars, and it was time for the potluck feast. And what a feast it was! Steak, ribs, chicken, shrimp, vegetable casserole, roasted potatoes, salad, and yes, a glass or two more of wine. And, did I mention dessert? Home baked brownies, butter and lemon tarts, chocolate chip cookies to die for… we ate until we could eat no more. It felt like a bit of the country in the city; it felt like a good old-fashioned

neighbourhood party- with kids and teenagers, parents and grandparents. Good food, good smells and good company. This is why we love the Pocket. And after the barbeques were carted home, the dishes washed and the wine bottles put in the recycling box, we all

got a dozen bottles of sweet roasted peppers to remind us of a perfect Saturday in September. Editor’s Note: Pickled peppers are great year round in sauces, Panini, salads, stir fry-any dish where you want to add umami flavour.

Chocolate:

A dark sampler By Seth Godin Bean to bar dark chocolate is a revelation. It’s got the terroir and backstory of the finest wines, it’s a collision of rural farmers and modern technology and markets similar to coffee, and it also brings along the Proustian nostalgia of childhood.

www.sethgodin.com sethgodin.typepad.com

Too many of us have been stuck in a Nestle/Hershey universe for too long. And if your early collisions with dark chocolate aren’t positive, it’s easy to decide it’s not worth the trouble or expense. [I get at least 10 servings out of a $10 bar, though, so it’s hard for it to feel like a ridiculously expensive luxury. If you skip an espresso...] Here, in no real order, are my favorite brands, all good to start with, all great to stick with. Every one is made by a human, who cares, someone you could meet, engage with and root for. • Askinosie • Rogue (entire production already sold out) • Original Beans • Cacao Hunters • Patric • Dick Taylor • Ritual • Soma • Fruition A few simple understandings and principles: The percentage matters, in the sense that chocolate that is between 70% and 90% dark is a Platonic ideal of flavor. I avoid flavoring agents like candies, seeds or salt, because what I’m trying to taste is the bean and what the maker has done to bring it to life. The kind of bean matters. Forastero beans are cheap, easy to grow and not particularly worth seeking out (with a few exceptions). On the other hand, Criollo (particularly the wonderful rare Porcelana hybrid which you can find from Soma and Original Beans) is a party in your mouth--but, alas, the hardest to grow. It’s always that way, isn’t it? And Trinatario beans are the backbone of this hobby. The country matters. Yes, with practice, it’s actually easy to tell the difference between Madagascar and Colombia. And finally, the farmer’s relationship with the grower matters a lot. Askinosie imports their own beans, and does amazing work with the farmers who work so hard to grow them. Enjoy.

Publisher’s Roasted Veggies Recipe

Most of the veggies in the picture came from my friend Greg’s back yard garden. His carrots inspired me to growing my own herbs and veggies-still a work in progress. I never realized carrots could have so much flavour!!

2-3 pounds root or dense vegetables, cut into 1 inch chunks-I never peel my root veggies, so much flavour and nutrients in the skin. Olive oil, salt and pepper, little bit sage, little bit oregano, thyme (these were my herbs I grew) Heat oven to 425, toss veggies with oil, salt and pepper. Roast 40-60 minutes, stirring a couple of times for even cooking and browning. This is a great side dish for any occasion. SHOWCASING THE BEST OF TORONTO’S EAST END

Meet Your East Enders Lucia Loizzo

Hi!

My name is Lucia and I have been running North Pole Bakery since 1974. I like to socialize and get to know my customers. I treat everybody as a friend. Its not my nature to act strange to anybody. My customers tell me stories and I get to know what is going on outside my store. The community has changed a lot, more diversity. I believe the way I treat people reflects back to me. Other stores have problems with school kids but I treat them nice, how can they be bad back. When you visit my store, you will find everything you could expect from an Italian Bakery. It’s all hand made with the freshest ingredients. People come from miles around for my cannoli and specialty cakes. Come on by! .

In Honor Of Mary Macleod A hard working dreamer Mary Macleod passed on in late September this year at the age of 82. I didn’t know her well but over the years I got to know her story. I was impressed by the fact she came to Canada from Scotland to start a new life. And in 1981, she started another dream, Mary Macleods Shortbread based on old family recipes. Mary took these recipes very seriously and her clients benefited greatly from her passion. I first met Mary at her original store on Yonge just north of Eglinton. I loved the atmosphere and the cookies she made. In the new location on Queen E, she grew the business and supported her community. She was a generous person, dedicated to pursuing her dream. I will miss her. Her Daughter-in-law, Sharon Macleod took over managing the store in 2010, when Mary retired, and continues to make excellent shortbread in the artisan way.

Meet your East Enders Meet Christine Kostoff, owner of Yellow House Gallery on Kingston Road, great community supporter and promoter of local artists. She good naturedly responded to our East Ender Quiz. What is your idea of perfect happiness? A bowl of home made chicken ceasar salad, a $10 bottle of Cab Sauv, my man and my favorite netflix series. What is your greatest fear? Chaos. Which living person do you most admire? My life partner: Jon Steinberg. He is a brilliant artist: a stand up comedian. he knows how to stay on track in the face of adversity and not get distracted by the surface things in life - I try to take a page from his book everyday. What is your favourite indulgence? Spa treatments...facials, massage therapy... All. dAy. long. If I could! Where is your favourite East End place to have fun? Besides my own gallery openings? :))) ...just kidding.....Maha’s Egyptian Restaurant on greenwood, north of gerrard...a neighborhood ‘secret’ no more...! Journey Within Dr. Yuri Murakami, ND Health is a journey of creating a harmony with your true self. In this journey, we tune into ourselves and explore the unique expression we each have within. The journey does not mean you have to go far... but more importantly, shifting the view away from how you were conditioned to operate in the past toward a new, healthier outlook. Winter is a great time for this journey as the energy of the season helps us listening to our inner voice. At Yuri’s Village, we have a special annual weekend event this November called, “Health, Food, Creativity”, where you can join a variety of healing workshops for all free of charge. The workshop are ranging from movement practices like yoga, Qi-Gong, Tai Chi to food and nutrition education, and from self exploration, like art therapy, to subtle energy Chakra healing. There are also arts & crafts sale by local artists and artisans at the Wellness Market during the event and many engaging creative activities at the art studio!

Sat & Sun, Nov. 19th to 20th 10:00 am - 6:00 pm Good quality of self-care is highly recommended this time of the season. Visit us and find how you can support your health naturally!

YOGA WITH SUSAN

Find your inner strength and make friends with your body Part 2 / continued from last issue

The other major thing we focus on to help maintain this deeper connection is the Breath and to keep learning about the many different ways that we can utilize our Breathing to our best advantage. We can use our breath properly and either slow down and relax and enjoy the beauty of the moment or we can use our breath to help rev things up to function at a dynamic peak performance level and both these Aspects are important if we are to develop our human capacities fully. Our nervous System is enhanced when we learn to breathe fully and deeply. Most illnesses begin with the nervous

system being weakened and there are powerful breathing techniques to strengthen the nervous system so that we feel connected to the lifeforce within and around us. I remember one summer Teacher Training I was on and we had to sit and do ‘Breath of Fire’ for a whole 30 minutes! The next day of the workshop literally everyone came into class with way more energy and feeling way way better than before the exercise. The benefits were so Visable. If our breath is powerful, we can be like a sword – strong and dynamic, yet relaxed

And present. In our humanness we can feel constantly limited but Yoga we tap into our divine connectedness which gives unlimited boundlessness to live our best life.

Join Susan at her Woodbine Yoga classes She is also available for small group sessions or 1 on 1 sessions. Contact her at suescape@hotmail.com

Color Consultations by Jane Hall, Mistress of Colour

Value of colour consultation Save time and money and book a color consultation with a leading color expert, Jane Hall. Have you ever been totally overwhelmed by trying to choose a color from 6,000 paint chips and still not getting it right? Have you ever had the experience of painting the same room numerous times and still not being satisfied with the results? Instead, get it right the first time. Not only will you save time running back and forth to your local paint store and repainting the room for 5th time, it will cost less money as an entire house consultation averages $500. The end result will be a combination of colors you never dreamed of. If you and your partner can’t reach a decision, keep in mind that helping couples negotiate a compromise is her specialty. With 40 years of experience of working with colour Jane can help you take the plunge from grey and beige to the to beauty of color that will nourish your soul and sense of well being. There are lots of reasons to incorporate colour into home décor — whether it’s on the walls, in textiles or on painted furniture. And they go beyond the fact that colour is, of course, beautiful. The shades you surround yourself with can actually affect your life, and your perspective on the world around you. Being exposed to colour acts on us on a deep level. Anyone who’s marvelled at the soft shades of blossoms that begin to emerge in spring — green, yellow, pink and blue — will understand just how powerfully colour can affect the way we feel. Colour, like sound, travels on waves. Just as sound — specifically music — can have a profound effect on our subconscious, so too can colour deeply affect the way we feel about the time and place we’re in, and how we interact with our environment. Looked at that way, colour is like music for your eyes. So why not make each room offer up the same joy and creative inspiration that you get from your favourite adagio, punk rock classic or jazz solo?

Interior Design Consultations Looking for advice on renovating your home? Let Jane help you with making selections on tiles, flooring, cabinets, paint colors and soft furnishings area rugs, carpeting and lighting With her extensive knowledge of the home furnishings industry and supplier relationships built over decades she can help you make the right choices and save you time and money.

T

SPONSOR A FAMILY FOR THE HOLIDAYS

he Holiday Season is approaching and we at Nellie’s would like a few good friends to help us provide a Happy Holiday for over 200 women and kids that we support at our Shelter and in our community. For many women and children who have fled violence and are living in shelters or who are homeless, the holiday season often re-enforces their sense of loss and isolation from friends and family. This can sometimes lead women to return to their abuser as they try hard to recreate holiday memories for themselves and their children. However if we can provide a Happy Holiday with warm clothing, culturally relevant Holiday foods and gifts, our families feel included in the spirit of the Season and stay safe. We are seeking sponsors for these families. You can choose to sponsor a single newborn, several families or an individual woman, often forgotten at this time of year.

If you are able to help please contact helen@nellies.org and we will try and match you with the families who need your support.

NELLIE’S ONLINE HOLIDAY AUCTION! Every year Nellie’s runs an Online Holiday Auction to raise funds to support our essential programs for Women & Kids. These Programs include a weekly Food Bank which supports 80 of our families every Tuesday afternoon, our Women on the Move Program which addresses barriers faced by women with disAbilities & our Kids Summer Program which is a summer camp for the kids at our Shelter and in our community.

We ask our community members to donate new items, gift certificates and services which are sold on our auction website www.nelliesmarketplace.com. The auction website can be viewed from November 18th to December 16th only. It closes promptly at 12 noon on December 16th.

If you are able to donate new items, gift certificates or services please contact helen@nellies.org and if you are looking for holiday gifts please visit our auction website www.nelliesmarketplace.com from November 18th to December 16th and have fun bidding!
