Empire State Development Announces Completion

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s

Empire State Development (ESD) recently announced the completion of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s $3 million facility expansion in Islandia. Pal-O-Mine is a non-profit organization that utilizes therapeutic equine programs to promote growth, learning, and healing for children and adults with disabilities. Supported by a $600,000 capital grant from Empire State Development, recommended by the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council, the expansion will boost its capacity for job training, workforce preparedness, and internship programs. These services will provide crucial skills and support that empowers these individuals to overcome employment barriers and achieve greater independence and success in their lives.

American Pet Professionals Brings Dreams To Life!

Hosting The First Ever ‘Art For Paws’ Featuring Pet Artists From Across The Region!

American Pet Professionals and the Islip Arts Council are joining together to host the first ever ‘Art for Paws’ exhibit this May 7 - 30, 2024. Showcasing the incredibly talented pet artist members of both organizations featuring artwork of our beloved four-legged family members. The exhibit will feature artists from around Long Island, in various formats of art.

“This has been a dream of mine for 20+ years,” said, President and founder of American Pet Professionals. “Many years ago, when researching the pet industry, I remember seeing an event that featured pet art, pet artists that was held somewhere across the country that was outside, and more of a pet expo. And I always wished that I was able to attend. Over the years running American Pet Professionals – we have had many incredible pet artists as part of our organization, and always thought this would be a fantastic event to host and feature their talent. But where to host it?” Hassel went on, “After taking a watercolor class at Islip Art Council in the fall, and loving it, I thought this is the perfect venue to host this. I inquired with the Islip Arts Council Board

President Waldo Cabrera and then met with the Executive Director Lynda Moran.”

The opening reception being held on Friday, May 17, 2024 from 6 pm – 8 pm at Islip Art Council, 1701 Sunrise Highway, Bay Shore, NY 11706, (in the South Shore Mall, next to Dick’s Sporting Goods). The reception will celebrate adopted pets and shine a light on pets in our local animal shelters that are in need of homes.

“Anyone who knows me, knows that my dogs have always been my family. Never without a dog in the house, sometimes with three, I am thrilled

that we are final having a Pet ‘family’ exhibit at the Gallery,” stated Lynda Moran, Executive Director of Islip Arts Council.

“Everyone at the Islip Art Council are pet lovers and pet parents and they jumped on board with the idea,” said Hassel. “I am so pleased to be working with them for this event!”

The exhibition will feature pet artists from both organizations, in many formats or art. This is the perfect opportunity to come and see the incredible talent and learn more about the Islip Art Council and American Pet Professionals.

USPS "Stamp out Hunger" Annual Food Drive - May 11th

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, the USPS is having its annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive and with the help of the West Islip community, they are excited and looking forward to collecting twice as much food as last year.

Bayview Elementary School Kicks Off PARP With “Dr. Seuss”

Bayview Elementary School kicks off PARP with “Dr. Seuss.” PARP is a NYS PTA program and stands for Pick A Reading Partner. The PARP program is designed to promote the love of reading in children and encourages reading partners to read with their children for at least 15 minutes per day. Bayview’s PTA organized two weeks of PARP events for the students to enjoy. The students walked into “Bayviewville” as the school magically transformed into various Dr. Seuss books for PARP - Cat in The Hat, Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?, The Grinch, The Lorax, Horton Hears a Who, ABC’s, One Fish Two Fish, Ten Apples Up on Top, Oh, The Places You’ll Go, Happy Birthday to You, Fox in Socks, and Green Eggs and Ham Students were invited back to school for a pajama night. They were treated to an assembly by Turtle Dance Music had book scavenger hunts and played themed activities. Every student received a PARP packet with a reading log, bookmark, eraser, and activity sheets. The grade that logs the most reading wins a pizza party courtesy of the Bayview PTA.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s $3 Million Expansion On Long Island

The ESD grant allows Pal-OMine the space to continue to empower, educate and enrich the most underserved communities and most importantly provide experiences to those individuals who desire to learn viable job skills. Working with our horses instills a newfound sense of confidence and self-worth, which serves as a foundation for their personal and professional growth journey.”

Since its inception in 1995, PalO-Mine has been at the forefront of using horses to facilitate growth, learning, and healing, serving over 400 individuals weekly. The programs offer personalized support and training to high-risk youth and adults with disabilities, aiming to increase participants’ independence, community integration, and economic security.

The expansion has transformed the facility, creating nearly 5,000 square feet of enhanced space to better serve its participants. The project involved the renovation of two existing structures to ensure ADA compliance, accessibility, and safety for all individuals. Additionally, a new 2,000-squarefoot prefabricated building has been constructed, providing much-needed space for expanded programming and services.

The acquisition of new equipment has enhanced the center’s capacity to deliver equineassisted therapy services, workforce training, and internship programs. By combining classroom learning with hands-on experience on the

farm, participants develop a broad range of vocational and life skills. Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, the Farm facilitates internships, apprenticeships, and job placement opportunities for program participants. The expansion and enhancement of these initiatives helps equip students with the tools and support necessary to overcome obstacles and achieve success in the workforce and beyond.

“Pal-O-Mine provides essential and therapeutic equine services to our residents who are in need, including our veterans. With Suffolk County being home to the largest veterans’ population in the state, we are grateful for the various initiatives the organization provides to our hometown heroes who are experiencing emotional or physical trauma. I applaud our partners for coming together to complete this expansion project, which will further empower our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine.

“We are grateful to Empire State Development, and the Governor, for investing in the important work that Pal-O-Mine Equestrian does to benefit those with special needs, veterans, and others throughout our Islip community.
