Another High Note For Massapequa Music Program

For the 16th consecutive year and the 17th time overall, the Massapequa School District has been nationally recognized for its exceptional music education program. It was named to the NAMM Foundation’s 2024 Best Communities for Music Education list.

This is the 25th year that the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation has published its Best Communities for Music Education list, recognizing hundreds of schools and districts across the country. To be considered, the district had to submit an extensive application outlining the components of its music education program as well as the support its receives from the board of education, administrators and the community.

Massapequa’s repeated inclusion on the list reflects its strong music program, with a wealth of

opportunities for students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. From general music classes, to band, chorus and orchestra ensembles, to annual musical productions, there are extensive opportunities for students.

“The Best Communities for Music Education program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community members who have made music education part of a wellrounded education,” said Vincent Green, director of fine and performing arts. “This recognition is a testament to the Massapequa community for their continuing support for the fine and performing arts. We strive to maintain an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education, and we are honored that the NAMM Foundation has once again recognized our efforts.”

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is forming a new online support group for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer within

the past 18-months. The group, which is free, will provide the opportunity for people to meet with others, and receive support. Sessions will be

Town To Host Special Olympics Spring Games At Plainedge High School

Over 500 Athletes To Compete In An Olympic-Style Contest On May 4th

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will once again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held at Plainedge High School on Saturday, May 4th, the games will include a fullday of competitive track and field events for over 500 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches. These athletes – children and adults with intellectual

disabilities – have dedicated months to training for an Olympic-style competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games.

“The Special Olympic Spring Games provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication, talents, and tremendous athletic achievements of these special athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers and stereotypes differently-

abled individuals face,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and thank the Plainedge School District for their assistance in making this important event a reality.”

“Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing them a

continuing opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, make friends, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families,” Diane Colonna, Vice President, Downstate Operations Special Olympics, New York said. “We are honored that the Plainedge School District will host our Spring Games and make a difference in the lives of these athletes.”

Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration May 17th

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that veterans and active United States military personnel are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration slated for Friday, May 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. This free event, open to Town of Oyster Bay veterans and active duty personnel,

will include a BBQ and entertainment by the singing group American Bombshells.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to serving veterans and ensuring they have access to important benefits in which they are entitled to,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This is an important way of thanking our brave hometown heroes for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as Americans.”
