Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.)

The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee.

Junior Mayor Attends Village Board Meeting

The Village Board had a special guest at the April 16th meeting! The Village Board was joined by Junior Mayor Pia Parikh. Pia is a 4th grade student at Albany Avenue and was one of the winners of the “Loving Lindenhurst” contest. Pia created an “Everything Lindy” puzzle with each

piece representing a different thing she loves about Lindenhurst, including the library, Albany Avenue School, Winter on Wellwood, and more.

Pia opened the Village Board meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. She then joined the Board

to follow along with the meeting’s agenda, share some of her favorite things in Lindenhurst, and even made the motion to close out the meeting!

We look forward to welcoming more of the Junior Mayors at the Village Board meetings throughout the year.

OLPH Knights Visit West Point

OLPH KNIGHTS VISIT WEST POINT - The NYS Championship for the Free Throw Contest was represented by Nicholas Agovino for 12-year olds. Nick came in Third Place for the entire State. He was joined by their Grand Knight Patrick Corcoran and Chancellor Paul Litrenta with the local council at West Point made up of Officers and Cadets. Congratulations Nick!

Steven Castiglione Earns Eagle Scout Rank

During a recent Court of Honor Ceremony for Steven Castiglione, Mayor Michael Lavorata declared April 17th, 2024 as “Steven Castiglione Day” in the Village of Lindenhurst, and that all residents should celebrate Steven’s outstanding achievement as an Eagle Scout. For Steven’s Eagle Scout

project, he helped beautify a local creek by planting four Butterfly Bushes and two Forsythia Bushes. Additionally, he built and hung two birdhouses with the help of his family, friends and fellow members of Troop 60.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “I am so proud of Steven’s accomplishment

of becoming an Eagle Scout. Achieving the distinction of Eagle Scout is no small feat, as it is the highest attainable rank in the Boy Scouts of America. It represents the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance, and commitment to the principles of scouting.”

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is forming a new online support group for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 18-months. The group, which is free, will provide the opportunity for people to meet with others, and receive support. Sessions will be

So what does Cinco de Mayo commemorate? Cinco de Mayo commemorates an improbable Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Though Cinco de Mayo is now celebrated across the United States, it remains a minor holiday in Mexico that is primarily observed in the state of Puebla. Knowledge of the holiday’s origins may or may not be widespread among American celebrants, many of whom view Cinco de Mayo as a celebration of Mexican culture.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.
