SPARK Scientists Explore Protein Structures At Brookhaven National Laboratory

Islip High School students participating in the Student Partnerships for Advanced Research and Knowledge (SPARK) program at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) recently visited the lab to work on a beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLSII). SPARK provides high schoolers with an opportunity to become visiting researchers at the lab’s scientific facilities.

The young Islip scientists, in conjunction with fellow high schoolers from Eastport-South Manor High School, are working to determine the structure of a protein that has never been resolved before: a Betalactamase that plays a role in antibiotic resistance. After trying to grow the crystals themselves without success, they worked collaboratively with Dr. Scott Lovell at Kansas University. He grew the crystals with his

far superior lab equipment, then shared the images with the students remotely. They selected the crystals most likely to produce good data, and Dr. Lovell shipped them to Long Island. With the help of NYX beamline scientist Dr. Kevin Battaile, students gathered data on a total

of eight samples. The next step will be to use the imaging software Phenix and COOT to determine the protein structure. Islip students will be presenting their work at both the NSLSII Users Meeting and the OSSP Symposium at BNL later this spring.

Middle Schooler Max Kjeldsen Leads Animal Donation Campaign

Max Kjeldsen, a member of Islip Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society, recently worked with his mother to initiate a remarkable monthlong campaign to help animals in need, bringing together Islip Middle School students and staff in a heartwarming display of generosity and compassion.

Throughout the month of March, IMS students and staff generously donated various items, from pet

food and toys to blankets and supplies, to support this cause. Donation boxes were then delivered to Almost Home Animal Rescue and Adoption in East Patchogue.

Kjeldsen is a dedicated student volunteer at the organization, which provides shelter, care and love to animals in need.

“The outpouring of support has been truly remarkable,” NJHS adviser Valerie Gallagher said.

USPS "Stamp out Hunger" Annual Food Drive - May 11th

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, the USPS is having its annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive and with the help of the West Islip community, they are excited and looking forward to collecting twice as much food as last year.

Customers should look

for the brown paper bags that will be delivered in the coming days, or they can come to the post office to pick one up in person.

Customers can leave the bags of donated canned/boxed goods next to their mailbox or where the carrier can see it so

they can pick it up.

Long Island Town Supervisors Advocate For Regional Shellfish Hatchery Project Will Improve Water Quality & Provide Economic Benefits

Together with a coalition of Nassau and Suffolk County Town Supervisors, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino is calling on state leaders to include funding for a Regional Shellfish Hatchery in the

state budget. The initiative seeks to preserve Long Island’s maritime heritage and bolster shellfish stocks throughout New York, which will in turn improve local water quality and provide regional economic

benefits.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is a leader in sustainability, as our existing shellfish hatchery has been instrumental in enhancing the local shellfish population and filtering pollutants from our coastal waters,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Through collaboration with neighboring towns and state support for the Regional Shellfish Hatchery, we can extend these benefits across Long Island and beyond, ensuring a cleaner, healthier marine ecosystem for all.”

State Senator Martinez Announces Small Business Administration Disaster Loan Outreach Center Opens In Babylon Center Will Assist Residents Impacted

New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez is welcoming the opening of a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Babylon. The center is located at Babylon Town Hall and will assist constituents from across the Fourth Senatorial District who suffered losses as a result of the January 9-10, 2024 storm that impacted the region with heavy rain, high winds, and coastal flooding. Representatives of the SBA will assist eligible residents and businesses in Suffolk and Nassau Counties who suffered economic losses as a result of the storm to apply for low-interest loans. Those who can apply include businesses, homeowners, renters, and private nonprofit organizations. They must be in a declared disaster area and meet other eligibility criteria depending on the type of loan. The types of disaster loans available are:

• Business Physical Disaster Loans – Loans to

businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property owned by the business, including real estate, inventories, supplies, machinery, and equipment. Businesses of any size are eligible. • Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) – Working capital loans to help small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and most private, non-profit organizations of all sizes meet their ordinary and necessary financial obligations that cannot be met as a direct result of the disaster.

• Home Disaster Loans – Loans to homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate and personal property, including automobiles.

“Picking up the pieces after a natural disaster can be overwhelming. I thank Governor Hochul for coordinating with our federal partners to get support to the Long Island region and the Small Business Administration for recognizing the severity of this event and for being there to help our neighbors find the resources to recover after its devastation,” said Senator Martinez.

The Babylon Town Hall Disaster Loan Outreach Center is located at 200 Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst and will open to the public.

The site’s hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed on Saturdays and Sundays. The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is May 10, 2024, and December 11, 2024, for economic injury applications.
