Insurance Tips And Information

Sudden and Accidental

You have damage to your home. You don’t want to file a useless claim. How do you differentiate between a valid claim and one which will embarrass you?

To be covered under insurance the damage should be ‘sudden and accidental.’ Always ask yourself, if the damage was ‘sudden and accidental,’ These are the words which help you determine if the damage is caused by poor maintenance or if it is an insurable loss.

If your roof leaks after a severe storm, do you file a claim? Do you have a new roof? Yes. File the claim. Have you been picking up little pieces of roofing tile from the driveway for the

last few summers? The roof is old and in disrepair. You have failed to maintain the roof. The water damage is not sudden and accidental. Don‘t bother filing. Get your roof repaired.

Sudden and Accidental. These are the key terms. Still unsure if you’re covered? Call your agent.

Pressing Flowers

Flowers can have sentimental value, particularly those received as gifts or those that were part of momentous occasions, like weddings. Fresh flowers have finite life spans unless measures are taken to preserve the blooms. The flower experts at ProFlowers say pressing flowers can preserve them for years to come. While flower lovers can invest in a flower press, other heavy objects also can be effective at pressing flowers. Start by choosing flowers that are either still in bud form or are freshly bloomed. Dry the flowers out as quickly as possible to prevent browning. Place the flower between two pieces of white, nontextured paper. Then place all

within the pages of a book. Depending on the size of the book, you may be able to press more than one flower at a time. Place other books on top to weigh down the book with the flowers inside. Change the moisture blotting sheets every few days. After two to three weeks, the flowers will be completely dry and flat. Remove the flowers carefully using tweezers or fingertips. Store the fresh flowers in a cool, dry place or consider framing them in a shadow box.

Bringing Together Community, Education, And Fun In A Night Of Exploration

Elementary Steam Night Lights Up Farmingdale With Science And Creativity

The Elementary STEAM Night in Farmingdale truly showcased the wonders of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics in a fun and engaging way. The event brought together a diverse community of over 600 attendees who eagerly explored dozens of interactive stations with the guidance of 100 enthusiastic volunteers.

Numerous Farmingdale High School clubs, including Robotics, Science Olympiad, Women In

STEM, Science Research Club, Health Science Club, and Theatre students, significantly contributed to the event’s success. Additionally, teacher volunteers from the district’s six buildings were present to ensure the event’s smooth operation.

“STEAM Night holds a special place in my heart; it’s my favorite event of the year,” expressed Dr. Kristen Cummings, the Director of Science. “Upon stepping in, one can immediately sense the vibrant atmosphere. Its

collaborative nature truly sets it apart, uniting the entire district.”

From the electrifying demonstrations like A Shocking Development and The Science of the Electric Guitar to the hands-on activities such as Whirly Swirly Pipe Making Sounds and Make Your Ice Cream, there was something everyone could enjoy and learn from. Participants also had the chance to test their skills in challenges like the Space Lander Challenge and Slinky Fall, Fold, and

Fly. One of the highlights of the evening was the opportunity for attendees to interact with high school students, who served as mentors at various stations. This collaboration fostered a sense of community and encouraged participants to participate in scientific practices. By asking questions, conducting investigations, analyzing data, and offering explanations, everyone had the chance to think like a scientist and engineer.

A significant event like

STEAM Night requires countless hours of planning. Dr. Kristen Cummings, the Director of Science at Farmingdale School District, together with the National Science Honor Society Members, advisors Sara Whitaker and Mike Boyd, and STEAM Night Coordinators Tatiana Hakimian and Julie Bonventre, can look back with pride on an event that truly brought the community together in celebration of learning and innovation. The success of

this year’s STEAM Night has set the bar high for future events, leaving the Daler community eagerly anticipating the next installment of this beloved tradition.

The success of Farmingdale School District’s 5th Annual Elementary STEAM Night highlights the power of combining education and entertainment to inspire the next generation of thinkers and creators.

Plan Ahead For An ‘Eggceptional’ Easter Egg Hunt

Easter is steeped in both religious and secular traditions. Each year on Easter Sunday, many families feast on ham or lamb. Hot cross buns may be served as morning treats.

Faithful Christians may dress up in their Sunday best to attend religious services.

Easter egg hunts are another time-honored component of this festive occasion. According to History.com, the Easter bunny and his eggs may initially have been derived from stories about an egglaying hare introduced to Americans by German settlers during the 1700s. Children would make nests and the hare would leave behind colored eggs.

Children often relish the idea of scouring their homes and yards in search of brightly-hued plastic or hard-boiled eggs. A little planning on the part of Easter egg hunt organizers can make this festive

tradition even more fun.

• Set the date: If Easter egg hunts are more than just family affairs and involve neighborhood searches or hunts with a close-knit group of friends, it may be smart to schedule in the days before Easter. This helps ensure that a good crowd will be available. Hunts on Easter itself may not get as many participants because celebrants could be at church or celebrating privately.

• Gather supplies early. Easter decorations and plastic eggs sell out rather quickly, so it’s wise to stock up on items as soon as they reach store shelves. If you’ll be using real eggs, consider boiling and coloring the eggs a week before the egg hunt so you won’t feel a time crunch. Simply store the dyed eggs in the refrigerator until ready for use. Color around six to 12 eggs per participant.

To raise awareness on the impact of trees in our communities, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster showcasing the importance of trees in preserving our environment, with a theme of ‘Trees for Tomorrow.’

“This poster contest presents a great opportunity to

• Designate a search area. Aim for a relatively private spot for the egg hunt. A park may seem like a good idea, but people who were not included in the egg count could wander in. If you use a public space, rope off an area where the eggs will be hidden. In addition, have a backup plan if the weather does not cooperate. School gymnasiums, libraries or church recreational centers are some potential indoor options.

• Have pails at the ready. Some children will forget to bring a basket. Therefore, have extra, inexpensive pails or buckets on hand. Sturdy gift bags also work in a pinch.

• Keep ages in mind when hiding eggs. Avoid choosing hiding spots that can be dangerous or prove too difficult for kids to find the eggs. Before hiding eggs, count how many you have, which will

help to ensure all eggs are collected later on. Next, identify hiding spots that will work for various ages. For example, toddlers will need conspicuous spots, and older children more challenging nooks and crannies. A map of where every egg is hidden can help as well. Real eggs may not matter outdoors since wildlife could simply dine on any undiscovered

eggs. However, plastic eggs are not good for the environment and every attempt should be made to collect them all.

• Send children out in stages. Let the youngest kids go first, and then group each search team by ascending age. This helps make sure the older kids won’t simply snatch up the more easily found eggs.

Town Announces Environmental Poster Contest For 4th Grade Students

bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting Mother Nature and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of the essential role of trees in our lives and may consider these key facts in their design:

• Oxygen Production: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, ensuring clean air. Did you know? 100 trees remove 53 tons of carbon dioxide and 430 pounds of other air pollutants per year.

• Air and Water Purification: Trees cleanse the air and water, promoting a healthier environment.

• Shade and Cooling: Trees provide shade, cooling our neighborhoods naturally.

• Wildlife Habitat: Trees offer food and homes for various wildlife, contributing to biodiversity.

• Health Benefits: Trees encourage outdoor activities, promoting physical well-being. Submissions should be made on poster paper (no larger than 12”x18”). No edible items should be used on the poster. The top

three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter.

“This contest is being co-sponsored by Friends of the Bay and The Waterfront Center, two organizations we proudly partner with throughout the year to help our efforts in protecting and preserving the environment,” said Councilwoman Johnson.

“I hope all fourth-grade students join us in this year’s program and take advantage of the great opportunity to become more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our environment.”

Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, a $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game and Friends of the Bay apparel.

Second and third place winners will also receive a gift certificate to The Waterfront Center and have a tree planted in their school district. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 29th,

• Reward with prizes. Be sure each child has some sort of takeaway prize. However, it’s fine to reward the best egg hunter with a more substantial prize.

• Gather and celebrate. Encourage guests to bring a small dish to contribute. After the hunt, everyone can gather to enjoy some refreshments.

with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd.

Along with their poster submission, students must include an entry form, which is available at www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest. Mail or email posters to the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources, Attn: Poster Contest, 29 Spring Street, Oyster Bay NY, 11771. Entries can also be emailed to environmental@ oysterbay-ny.gov with the subject line ‘2024 Poster Contest.’ Visit www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest for more details.

Town Officials & D.A. Demand Stronger State Laws To Crackdown On Drug Dealers & Fentanyl Possession

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board took decisive action to address the opioid crisis and combat the proliferation of deadly substances in New York State and across the region. Recognizing the urgent need for change, the Town Board passed an official resolution in support of Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney’s efforts to amend New York State laws related to deadly substances such as fentanyl and xylazine.

“As the opioid crisis continues to devastate families across our nation and in our community, with fatalities increasing across all communities and among all people, it is imperative that we take decisive action to save lives,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“The Oyster Bay Town Board and I are proud to support the Suffolk County District Attorney’s demands to amend state laws to increase punishment for drug dealers and ensure victims get the support they deserve. Together, we are sending a clear message that those who peddle deadly poison will be held accountable for their actions.”

Under current New York State law, individuals can possess up to 8 oz. of fentanyl before bail can be set, a quantity capable of killing over 100,000 people. Additionally, the law does not recognize families of those lost to fentanyl as “victims” and prevents these families from receiving financial compensation. Moreover, the use of xylazine (a

tranquilizer used to sedate large livestock animals) by drug dealers exacerbates the crisis, yet it remains legal to possess in our state.

The Town of Oyster Bay resolution approved today formally declares the Town Board’s support for DA Tierney’s advocacy efforts to amend state law relating to these deadly substances and recognizes that drug dealers who peddle this poison are, in fact, dealing death to our residents.

“The Oyster Bay Town Board is committed to taking decisive action to combat the opioid epidemic and protect the well-being of our residents,” added Councilman Lou Imbroto. “We stand in solidarity with District Attorney Tierney’s campaign to save lives and keep families whole.”

Saladino Announces Paid Internship Opportunities For College Students

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced the return of internship opportunities for college students who are looking to gain meaningful work experience. The Town will offer an internship program for the 2024 summer season.

“Internships give students an advantage over other job seekers when it comes to work readiness, and I am proud that the Town will once again provide that opportunity for our residents,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to receive mentorship

and supervision from experienced government professionals.”

This program compensates students at a competitive rate of $18 an hour, and students will work 19.5 hours per week. The program will operate May 30th through August 7th.

Internships are available in the following Town Departments: Comptroller, General Services, Environmental Resources, InterGovernmental Affairs, Planning & Development, Public Information, Public Safety, Public Works/ Engineering, Town Attorney, Town Board, and Town Clerk. Interns will gain worksite

specific knowledge, learn departmental procedures, assist with general office duties and reports, develop an understanding of worksite specific projects and apply the knowledge gained to benefit the Town of Oyster Bay.

College students interested in internship opportunities must apply by April 12th. Applicants must submit a resume with their application, available at oysterbaytown.com/ internship. Completed applications and resumes should be submitted to personnel@oysterbayny.gov. For more information, please call (516) 624-6425.

Unleashing The Power Of Music The Howitt Players Proudly Present School Of Rock

The Howitt Players rocked the house with their electrifying rendition of School of Rock! Based on the hit 2003 film, School of Rock follows Dewey Finn, a failed musician who poses as a teacher at a prestigious prep school. He forms a rock band with his students while avoiding the school principal. Dewey discovers his calling and gives the kids a rock ‘n’ roll crash course.

“There is no doubt that School of Rock is a cool show, possibly the coolest a musical could get,” said director Mrs. Jen Klock.

“The underlying themes of connection and inclusivity make this show special and relevant to kids. Just as Dewey Finn created a band of students from all walks of life, our Howitt Players family is made up of young people from all backgrounds whose talents and passions deserve to be seen and heard.”

The talented young cast impressed the audience with their performance, highlighting the incredible talent within the Farmingdale School District. Eighth-grade student Lincoln Keena stars as Dewey Finn, a guy with only one passion: rock and roll. He helps students explore music, balancing his passion

for rock with newfound responsibilities. Zaria Canizares plays principal Rosalie Mullins of Horace Green Preparatory School. She’s initially portrayed as a strict professional under pressure but learns to relax and enjoy music. Cassie Hill portrays Summer, the band’s manager, a role that suits her perfectly. She is energetic and fearless, not hesitating to give instructions to everyone, including Dewey.

George Grigorov portrays Zack, whose electric guitar skills are extraordinary, yet his composition abilities are equally impressive. In the Battle of the Bands, Zack’s latest song showcases his unique talent, even if his busy father fails to notice.

Natalie Calderon embodies Tomika, a gifted singer who must summon the courage to fully express herself vocally and in class. As the new student, Tomika faces challenges making friends among her high-achieving classmates, but she shines at the forefront with the band’s support. Mary Cohen brings Freddie to life, a disciplined youngster with percussion aspirations, proving that even obedient children can march to their beat. Shannon Tower takes on the role of Lauren, who plays the keyboard

despite doubts about fitting in with the band. Thanks to Dewey’s influence, Lauren discovers that true coolness lies in playing the keys. Ty Rambeau depicts Billy, the group’s stylist whose passion for fashion clashes with his family’s views. Fortunately, he channels this creativity into the band, defining the perfect School of Rock image: Horace Prep uniform-chic. Tabatha Caputo embodies Katie, the bass guitarist who leverages her classical cello training to enhance the band’s sound.

Tyler Davies portrays Ned Schneebly, Dewey’s former rocker best friend turned

elementary school teacher. Devin Shaw plays Patty, Ned’s girlfriend, who plays a pivotal role in shaping his new adult life.

The electrifying soundtrack of School of Rock came to our stage with the remarkable Pit Band under the guidance of Mr. Samuel Gelfer. Mr. Eric Hulse oversaw vocals, while Mrs. Amanda Whorlow expertly arranged choreography. Mrs. Alicia Byers and Mr. Daniel Bilello led set design and construction, and Mr. Eric Perles took charge of lighting and sound. Leading the charge as Director for one final time

was Mrs. Jen Klock “School of Rock has been a favorite of mine since I was in middle school. Watching a new generation of kids bring to life a story that meant so much to me when I was their age is quite a full circle moment and an unintentionally perfect way to close out my chapter with this incredible group.”

The story of School of Rock resonates with Dalers of all ages as it highlights the transformative power of music and the arts. The musical serves as a reminder that we are stronger together by showcasing how a group of diverse individuals can

come together, overcome challenges, and achieve success through their talents and hard work. It celebrates the idea that each person’s contribution is valuable and that incredible things can be accomplished when we work towards a common goal with passion and dedication. Ultimately, School of Rock is a celebration of creativity, friendship, and the boundless potential within each of us.

Town Yard Waste Collection Resumes April 1st

Residents Receiving Town Service

Should Place Yard Waste Curbside With Recycling

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola announced that Yard Waste collection will resume the week of Monday, April 1st, for homeowners who receive Town collection services. Yard waste is picked up on the same day as recycled materials, including plastics, metals, glass and cardboard.

“With the spring season upon us, many residents will begin clearing their properties from leaves and

other debris left behind by winter,” said Councilman Labriola. “Yard waste collection, which includes lawn clippings, will get underway the first week of April and run throughout the year.”

Residents should place yard waste curbside on their same day as their recycling items. Yard waste is collected by Town sanitation crews and taken to compost facilities. Waste includes grass clippings, weeds,

leaves, tree trimmings, hedge and shrub clippings and other garden/yard waste. Materials should be placed in bags at the curb, and should weigh no more than 50 pounds. No household garbage, refuse or animal waste should be disposed with yard waste.

“Collecting Yard Waste is an important component to our recycling program,” said Councilman Labriola. “One of the prime benefits of recycling yard waste is that the cost to take these

Easter Sunday Mass Celebrations

Celebrations of Easter Sunday Mass are known for their joyous nature regardless of where Christians happen to be. But few, if any, celebrations of Mass can match the scope of the celebration in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the public celebration to be canceled in 2020 and

2021, but it returned in 2022. A sizable number of celebrants returned along with it, as estimates suggested around 50,000 people were on hand to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on the plaza directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on April 17, 2022. Pope Francis led the Mass, which was concelebrated with 280 priests, 25 bishops and

23 cardinals. But the crowd attending Mass was just the beginning, as Pope Francis later delivered his Urbi et Orbi benediction, a papal address and apostolic blessing the pope delivers on solemn occasions, from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica before an estimated crowd of 100,000.

materials to a compost facility is less than the cost to dispose of them at an out-of-state landfill. This successful program is another example of the Town’s commitment to providing high quality environmental services while protecting our taxpayers’ wallets.”
