The Heart of the Practice Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge are high school sweethearts who met at Busch Gardens! Although they attended separate high schools in Tampa, (Dr. Shirmo graduating magna cum laude from Jesuit High School and Dr. Eldridge graduating from King High School), they decided to attend Tulane University in New Orleans together. They both graduated from Tulane with a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology, cum laude, and then because they pursued a shared interest in public health and the study of epidemics, they earned their Masters Degrees in Public Health in Epidemiology at Tulane before graduating from medical school at Tulane Medical School in 2003. After medical school, they completed their Family Practice Residencies at Florida Hospital, a Christian and “faith-based” hospital in Or-

lando, Florida in 2006. Today, both doctors are committed to continuing their education, training medical students and working in the community. In addition to his practice at Trinity Family Physicians, Dr. Shirmo serves as Medical Director for Madison Pointe Rehabilitation and Health Center in New Port Richey. Additionally, he is a Medical Director of a home health company called Suncrest Omni, which allows him to teach and provide medical consultations for patients at many facilities in the Bay Area. Drs. Eldridge and Shirmo have also been selected as exclusive medical providers for Mike Ditka’s NFL Gridiron Greats Charity, helping exNFL players who were injured while playing ball. Dr. Eldridge says, “There are only seven locations in the whole country, and we are the primary care doctors for the program in this area. We’re very excited to be involved in

Trinity Family Physicians was born in the hearts of two doctors who practice medicine for all the right reasons, and who put personalized care before everything else, which is why so many people have called them their doctors since they opened their doors in 2007. This husband and wife physician-team has one simple goal, and that is to have their family take care of yours. Stephanie Eldridge, M.D., MPH, and Amir Shirmohammad, M.D., MPH, (a.k.a. “Dr. Shirmo”) are Board Certified family physicians who offer personalized medical care in a variety of ways to each of their patients. Their office is located at the Trinity Professional Place complex (at the corner of Trinity and Duck Slough Boulevards) at 1817 Cypress Brook Drive, Suite 101. Their practice is both high-tech and old-school, offering patients all of the latest technology for record keeping, prescription access and communi-

cation, combined with good old-fashioned, hands-on care.

such a worthwhile cause.” Dr. Shirmo says, “These are not the big-money players who have millions of dollars in the bank, but the players who played more minor roles, but who took on greater injuries.” Since their practice has opened, they have helped countless patients, and in doing so they have become a part of many of the families in Trinity, including my own. I have been a patient since 2008 and I can honestly say that I love these doctors, and I know that I can call on them in a time of need. It may sound a tad corny to say

From The Editor Kim Thomas

Where in the Heck is Tate’s Hell? I believe you can find fun just about anywhere in Florida. Even the dreaded Tate’s Hell State Forest, where the only thing scarier than the snakes and black bears are the gargantuan mosquitoes. Tate's Hell State Forest is located in Franklin County, between the Apalachicola and Ochlockonee Rivers. This densely wooded and swampy part of Florida is 202, 437 acres and has been known since 1875 as Tate's Hell, after the unfortunate Cebe Tate, who lived in Sumatra and raised cattle. Legend has it that Tate went into the swamp intending to kill a panther that was taking out his cattle and after becoming separated from his dogs, he was hopelessly lost. How long he was lost varies with the telling of the story, but most agree that it was a week or so before he finally emerged somewhere near Carrabelle, about 25 miles from Sumatra, and everyone agrees that he was snake-bitten and eaten nearly alive by bugs. Upon walking up

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

to two men, Tate is reported to have said, “My name is Tate, and I've just been in hell.” Just after he spoke those words, Cebe Tate fell dead at their feet. My parents have a vacation house on one of the rivers in Carrabelle and this year we decided to take our family vacation there, where we could enjoy Dog Island and St. George Island, and head over to St. Joe Bay for some scalloping. Even though it poured rain for nearly the whole week, we prevailed and made our fun. Tate’s Hell has plenty of spots along the river to camp or swing from a rope swing - and letting go over that tannic river water definitely shoots up my adrenaline. A unique feature in the forest are the artesian wells. Imagine walking along in the woods and coming up on water just bubbling up from the ground. Also unique to Tate’s Hell is the dwarf cypress forest. The Ralph G. Kendrick Dwarf Cypress Boardwalk

was built there to honor one of the stranger natural wonders of Florida, a stand of dwarf bald cypress centuries old and less than 15 feet tall. Most trees don’t even come up to the boardwalk. Tate’s Hell is definitely wild and unique but if you ever go, take a GPS. My 16-year-old, Axel, in Tate’s Hell

Helping Veterans Discover Eligibility for Korean War Appreciation Certificate The US Department of Defense wishes to award every U.S. Korean War Veteran a certificate of appreciation, as part of its 60th Anniversary Commemoration of the ending of the Korean War. =The criteria for eligibility are purposely broad. You may apply for this appreciation certificate if you served in any branch of the U.S. military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard) between the dates of June 25, 1950 through the armistice on July 27, 1953. You are eligible whether or not you were physically in Korea during this time. Families of deceased Korean War Veterans may apply on their behalf. Many Vets are unaware of this offer, and/or do not know how to apply. The American Legion Post 147 in Odessa is volunteering to help any Veteran obtain the certificate and receive it at a free banquet later this fall. You DO NOT need to be a member of Post 147 to get your certificate through it. Here are two ways you can get all the information needed:

Angela’s Pizza Shop is Introducing Franchise Opportunities By Katie Thomas Angela’s Pizza Shop is expanding out into the Tampa Bay Area with new shops opening and franchise opportunities are available for motivated entrepreneurs. The young owners are working hard to provide local foodies with delicious menu items that are composed of the finest, freshest ingredients. The flavorful house-crafted menu items paired with the drive behind the team at Angela’s Pizza are a winning combination. A quality product, hard work and dedication are paying off big time and Angela’s Pizza Shop is making the community’s taste buds soar with satisfaction. Josh Chabator, proprietor of Angela’s Pizza Shop, is local raised young man with great pride in his Italian heritage. At 21, Josh decided to challenge himself and buy Angela’s Pizza in Odessa to recreate reflecting his own standards. Josh had a goal to provide the local community with a new favorite restaurant that would focus on serving traditional

10

Little Italy style pizza, Italian cuisine and American favorites made with fresh ingredients from local produce vendors. Josh saw that many people were changing their mindset and supporting local, mom ‘n’ pop shops that serve great food and support the community. “We are constantly talking to our customers about what they want and expanding our menu to meet their needs,” says Josh. After a successful two years at his Odessa location, Josh decided to expand out even more into the Tampa Bay Area by offering franchise opportunities for other hardworking, driven individuals. At 24, Josh is enthusiastic and dedicated to Angela’s success. The newest Angela’s Pizza Shop location opened on Waters Avenue just a couple months ago and is owned by Nick Witter. Josh and Nick are lifelong friends and are excited to work as a team to bring Angela’s Pizza into a new area. Nick says, “We want our customers to know we are young, hard-working and dedicated to serving them with unmatched

service and quality food.” Nick is already expanding by adding outdoor seating. He says, “Cleanliness is everything, along with keeping the restaurant uniform with the original Angela’s. We strive to provide the exact same product at each location, so as we grow, you’ll be able to eat your favorite meals at all times!” The new location on Waters Avenue in Tampa follows the standard practice of Angela’s Pizza: all housemade dishes are composed with produce from local vendors and nothing is ever pre-made, frozen or pre-packaged. Angela’s Pizza Shop on Waters gets their fresh ingredients from the produce stand on Bearss Avenue, so you can be sure everything they use is local! The Angela’s Pizza Shop franchise owners are friends and competitors, challenging each other and pushing each other to come up with new amazing creations. The team members at Angela’s Pizza Shop create a fun, electric atmosphere that is full of youthful energy. And once you try their food, you will be hooked!

economic vitality of Pasco County. Grief Cafe Scheduled in August Area residents can participate in a relaxed conversation about loss and grief facilitated by a professional, served with refreshing beverages and delicious food. The purpose of Grief Cafe is to increase awareness of loss and grief with a view toward helping people make the most of their finite lives. Otherwise, Grief Cafe is offered with no intention of leading participants towards any particular conclusion, product or course of action," according to Grace Terry, MSW, host and facilitator of Grief Cafe. "There is no pressure or expectation, except that all are asked to be respectful of differences. Participants don't even have to talk if they would rather just listen and enjoy the snacks and beverages." There is no cost to attend. Freewill donations are accepted to help defer costs. And, reservations are an absolute must. For a complete schedule of Grief Cafe and to reserve a space, interested persons can call 727.487.3207 or email grace@grace-terry.com.

The first ten people to make a reservation will be seated," Terry emphasized. "I keep the group small so that we can have a friendlier, more personal experience." Terry, the Founder of Grief Resolution Resources of Tampa, stated that "Grief Cafe can be beneficial to just about everyone. Most people need to know more about grief than they currently know so that they can be helpful and empathetic when others experience loss. Also, since sooner or later everyone will experience loss in their lives and will therefore grieve, it's better to be prepared for that. Knowledge is power. It's good to know the facts - as opposed to the common fiction about grief - before facing a difficult loss." Grief Cafe can be particularly helpful to (1) Anyone who has recently experienced significant loss of any kind; (2) Anyone who is concerned about someone else who has experienced loss; (3) All "helping professionals," including health care professionals, social service providers, mental health professionals, providers of geriatric care/senior services, clergy, and others who interact with people on a personal level, whether

"Helping professionals interact with grieving people every day and the professional schools unfortunately do not provide practical, upto-date, accurate grief education," according to Terry. Terry invites anyone interested in co-hosting a Grief Cafe at their home, workplace, or place of worship to contact her. I always talk to people about their lifestyle before we decide on the best type of lens. You have to know what types of activities people enjoy doing before you can help them decide which lenses will work best – do they go boating a lot, work on the computer each day, do they play a lot of sports, do they read a lot – all these factors go into determining the best type of lenses for each in-

JC Audiology – Changing Lives with Better Hearing By Marcy Sanford Dr. Judith Reese of JC Audiology, located at 1541 Dale Mabry Highway in the North Fork Professional Center, has patients of all ages who are coping with hearing loss. “No one with hearing loss is too young for hearing aids but if you wait too long before getting hearing aids, it may become very difficult to find hearing aids that will work for you,” explains Dr. Reese. “With each passing year of untreated hearing loss, your brain suffers more and more auditory deprivation until the point when your brain is no longer able to process speech sounds normally.” Hearing loss can occur naturally as you grow older or it can be caused by trauma or illness. Dr. Reese has helped patients of all ages hear better at JC Audiology from a mother in her 40s to grandparents in their 80s and all ages in between. Dr. Reese prides herself on helping her patients find hearing aids that fit their ears and their lifestyles and in the process she and her husband Charlie, the office manager for JC Audiol-

I can’t wait to get fully adjusted to my ‘new ears.’”

One of the many reasons Dr. Reese is so successful in helping her patients find a hearing aid that works for them is that she focuses on a patient centered approach at JC Audiology. “All patients have different needs, lifestyles, and listening environments. This means a patient-centered approach to the fit and settings of a hearing aid are paramount to optimal hearing aid use. I’ve seen lots of patients who were unsatisfied with hearing aids purchased elsewhere become very satisfied once some simple adjustments were made in my clinic.” Dr. Reese has even had one patient who knows directly that his hearing aids helped save his life. “I thought you might like to hear a nice story regarding my hearing aids. We were taking a hike on a mountain trail in North Carolina with our black lab. All of a sudden, I heard a noise a few feet away from me, that frightening sound of a rattle. Believe it or not, I heard it before my wife and even our lab had not picked it up. I pulled on our dog and stopped my wife and we saw a large eastern diamondback

about 10 feet away on the path. Before my hearing aids, I would have probably kept right on walking until I was on top of him.” Being able to hear the sounds around you not only allows you to engage in life more fully but it has multiple social and health benefits. You’ll be amazed at how your life will change for the better when you can hear more clearly. “Unaided hearing loss is expensive and has social costs as well. It has been linked with frustration, embarrassment, social isolation, depression, and even dementia, all of which negatively affect your quality of life leading to increased hospitalizations and health care costs. Hearing aids are not a gadget to hang on your ears but an investment in better quality of life for your future for which there is really no price tag,” says Dr. Reese. At JC Audiology, Dr. Reese can help you select the hearing aids most appropriate for your listening needs while being cosmetically appealing and as friendly to your pocketbook as possible with several payment options available. GCS Driving Academy The Ultimate Driving Experience Brought to Your Door! By Katie Thomas The freedom and exhilaration felt behind the wheel on the great highways of America is a one of a kind feeling. Driving can be a fantastic experience, but it can also be downright dangerous. Inexperienced drivers often are nervous and have little reaction time control while on the highway; the safest drivers are drivers that feel confident and predict situations before they occur. GCS Driving Academy works with both teens and adults drivers who want to feel more confident, teaching them the techniques, confidence and skills necessary to become great drivers, while enhancing their love for the drive itself. Serving the entire Tampa Bay area, GCS Driving Academy offers safe teen driver training, as well as the ultimate driving experience for those who own high-performance cars. George Csanadi, proprietor and sole mentor at GCS Driving Academy, says, “Driving is my passion. I adore what I do and there is no feeling that quite matches the one I feel when my students succeed in becoming responsible and safe, while developing a love for the art of driving.” George grew up in Budapest, Hungary and moved to Florida in 1985. He says, “Driving is in my blood. My dad and uncles were all moto racers in Hungary and I began racing motocross when I was 14. When I turned 20, I was introduced to auto racing on high speed tracks and I knew I just had to get involved.” George has two sons, ages 23 and 26, both of whom are involved in motocross racing. “As the father of two boys, I know from experience how terrifying it can

22

be when your children begin to drive,” says George. “I was the parent hiding in the bushes, watching my boys when they started to drive in order to make sure they were taking on the responsibility of driving in the best way. It is very scary to hand the keys over to your kids, which is why I started teen safe driving. We all need peace of mind when our kids begin driving and moving towards adulthood…it’s our job as parents.” George has earned the respect of other racers and his clients. In both capacities as driver-racer and instructor, he has competed in most car clubs and racing organizations such as: IMSA, Grand-Am, SCCA, PBOC, PCA, and BMWCCA. He has successfully competed at some of the world’s most famous road courses. These include Daytona International Speedway, Sebring International Raceway, Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio, and Watkins Glen International. In 1996, George trained a 14 year-old girl transitioning from racing karts to racing cars. Today, the world knows her as Danica Patrick, the only woman to win an Indy Car race and one of the highest-paid female sports figures in the world. George tells me that many people may be apprehensive about sending their kids off with a race professional, but the important thing to remember that will ease your fears is that racing professionals are the best drivers in the world…they must be ready for any situation and always alert. Who better to instruct your precious cargo? Set Your Teen Up For Driving Success! George informed me that the U.S. has the least requirements for teens to earn their drivers’ licenses in the entire

He explained that European teens receive their license at 17 after 70 hours of training with a certified instructor, and the cost for a Euro teen is $2500 compared to $55 here in the U.S. This may be the reason that 36% of the deaths of 15 -19 year olds in the U.S. result from “driver error.” George began Safe Teen Driver Training two years ago with a goal to significantly reduce teen driver wrecks and fatalities by teaching defensive George gave Ferrari owner Stephen Van Dyck driving techniques (awareness) in the confidence and skill to truly enjoy his car a program that greatly improves lars on teaching their kids safe driving the performance of teen drivers. habits. first get in the car with their child and see the difference in their attitude after lessons with him. “I instruct the kids in a way that uses positive reinforcement. I tell them all the things to do instead of what not to do. Parents have a hard time not instructing their kids in a way that focuses on don’t do this or that mentality. And the kids listen to me and don’t argue like they would with their parents.” George puts teen drivers in real life situations in order to make them become anticipatory drivers rather than reactive drivers. He says, “You want to be on the road and know what is coming.” George covers all the necessities when teaching driving skills. He instructs to help drivers develop proper technique, know-how and how to handle a vehicle in changing settings. GCS Driving Academy is a great way for your teen to build the skills it takes to be safe and give you peace of mind when they are out on the road. Parents are encouraged to ride along and see for themselves what a difference George can make. James and Diane Halstead expressed their gratitude, writing, “We cannot thank you enough for teaching our daughter, Ashley, the necessary skills to keeping her safe on the road. Hiring you as her professional driving teacher was by far the best investment we have made for Ashley in her teen years. As you know, after she received

her permit, we were very reluctant in letting her drive. However, after your first lesson with her, we could see her skills blossoming. After only a couple lessons, we saw incredible improvement, and we were 100% sure we had made the right decision. Ashley has learned basic driving skills, the importance of safe driving, defensive driving skills, and has acquired self-confidence in her own abilities. We appreciate all the care you have placed in Ashley and look forward to having you come back this summer to review with her prior to her state driving test. Thank you again for always being punctual, bringing your professional expertise, providing us with peace of mind, and most importantly giving the gift of safety to our daughter Ashley. We would recommend anyone who values their child to invest in their safety, invest in George Csanadi, and don’t let your loved one become a statistic.”

George coaching me, my skill level soared. More importantly my confidence has soared as well. Instead of seeing the track as hundreds of quick, scary decisions, I now experience it as a continuous-flowing, gliding mosaic. Your calm and insightful interventions and explanations have been crucial in getting me to this rewarding level. My fun and safety have multiplied by three and now I can really appreciate my car for the design and engineering masterpiece it is. Your superior ability to improve the daily driving skills of drivers is the greatest investment we can make in our children (and ourselves!). A car-

ing parent should insist that a coach of your caliber advance their children’s skills to a high level. I can recommend you without qualification.” GCS Driving Academy’s services are unique and specialized - they just cannot be matched by your average driver’s education program. It is never too late to receive driving lessons and teens should be getting prepped before they learn bad driving behaviors. You can reach George Csanadi at (813) 713-4233, or email george@gcsdrivingacademy.com. Visit www.gcsdrivingacademy.com for more information.

Performance Driving: Have you got a high-performance vehicle that you want to floor the pedal on? George offers Performance Driving lessons on world famous tracks such as Sebring Intl. Raceway. You will learn to handle your high-performance, madefor-speed vehicle on a track where you can open up the throttle and let her rip. With speed limits on most American roads set below 70 mph, there are very few legal ways to drive these cars near their limits. GCS Driving Academy has access to the best tracks, where you can really drive your high-performance car the way it is meant to be – fast! As a race-driver and instructor, George’s experience is remarkable. Stephen Van Dyck says, “Having graduated from the Ferrari track-driving program, I thought I knew what I needed to know to be happy on the track with my Ferrari 599. But Teen driver Ashley’s parents say GCS Driving after four days on the track with Academy is one of their best investments

“Physicians” Continued from page 1 that love is at the center of Trinity Family Physicians and their entire practice, but then again, why would we want it any other way? If there were more heart in the medical field would it change the way it worked? Perhaps that’s why their personal approach is so popular. One of their patients said, “Dr. Eldridge is one of the most knowledgeable physicians in this area. She cares about the patient and is also involved with the community and promotes positive caring to all. She is thorough and doesn’t believe in giving medications unless she is sure the patient needs them. She is a wonderful, caring human being.” Another said this about Dr. Shirmo, “Here is a doctor who truly cares about his patients. He has a passion for them and their health. He not only cares about the physical body, but also the person inside. I cannot say enough about this man. I am so incredibly lucky to have found him.”

Compassionate Care For All Trinity Family Physicians is committed to caring for patients first and foremost, which is why they accept so many insurances, offer care for those without insurance, and have two major programs of care within their practice. They have a Traditional Practice, which accounts for the majority of their patients who range in age from 7-107, and they have a Concierge Practice, which is designed for patients who want even more one-on-one attention. The Concierge Practice is a totally unique approach to medicine and with all of the changes within the medical field these days, it’s a welcome approach for patients who are working on a health care goal, who have an illness that requires frequent visits, or patients who want to have additional access to their physician. Patients who enroll in the Concierge Program are often Traditional Program patients first but that is not a requirement. Dr. Shirmo says, “We have both programs at our practice, but our Concierge Practice is gaining in popularity. For less than the price of a

“Umbrellas for Peace Created a Colorful Display of Togetherness in Tampa

The kickoff to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay’s new awareness and recruitment campaign was a great success. Nearly 200 volunteer mentors, parents, and children attended “Umbrellas for Peace” on Sunday, July 14, at the Glazer Children’s Museum, 110 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. Bigs (volunteer mentors) and Littles (children) spent time discussing their thoughts about peace and helping the community, while painting umbrellas with messages of hope at the museum. Guided by stilt walkers from Busch Gardens, they then showcased their masterpieces

during a colorful parade around Curtis Hixon Park. The parade culminated in the group forming a heart shape in the middle of the park. The “heart” is part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters logo. (See photos.) Umbrellas for Peace started out as art therapy for people affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and has since blossomed into a global peace initiative. More than 2-million people from 29 countries have participated in artist Matt Lamb’s “Umbrellas for Peace” concept. Sunday was be the first time the event was held in Tampa. When initially presented with the

idea, Stephen Koch, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, Inc., felt it was a perfect tie-in with our new recruitment initiative. “Just like umbrellas shield us from the rain and storms, good mentors can shield kids from some of life’s harsher elements,” Koch said. In coming months, Big Brothers Big Sisters will host and partner in events intended to spur discussion about the need for mentors, especially men. Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters matched more than 1,700 kids with mentors in Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties. Yet, more than

600 children remain on the waiting list. Statistics have shown the positive effects of the professionally supported mentoring that Big Brothers Big Sisters provides. In 2012, 99 percent of Littles had no involvement with the Department of Juvenile Justice, while 96 percent were promoted to the next grade. The local “Umbrellas for Peace” event was sponsored by: the Broadrick Family Foundation, Earth Tech and the Glazer Children’s Museum. The Glazer Children’s Museum, along with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, is a Children’s Board of Hillsborough County.

Sarah Lucker is a local Girl Scout from Lutz, working on her Gold Award Project. When the recent tornadoes hit two elementary schools in Oklahoma, Sarah knew she needed to help the students there. She contacted a guidance counselor in Moore, Oklahoma and asked how she could help. The result is the following list of items which she is collecting to send to Oklahoma: • over the ear headphones • tissues • scissors (round and shape ended) • colored markers (thin and wide) • recess games (cards, board games and more for ages 5-11) • clorox wipes • baggies (gallon size) • paint sets and brushes • playdough
