Bryant & Stratton College: Focused On Your Employability Some people choose a college that specializes in a field they’re interested in. Others choose a college because their friends are going there. But what if you want a college to prepare you to be employable? That is precisely what Bryant & Stratton College is all about. According to Paul Bahr, Director of Bryant & Stratton College’s Western New York campuses, “From their first day on campus, Bryant & Stratton College students begin learning the skills and proficiencies they’ll need to effectively perform the technical functions in their degree program. But they also learn the critically important “soft skills” employers demand today. These include the fundamentals: writing proficiency, mathematics, listening and speaking competencies; as well as the skills you’ll need to be a valuable employee, like problem-solving, decision-making, idea-generating and others.” Bahr continues, “It’s this total package we call EmployableYOU™ — a well-rounded education with a strong career focus — that helps differentiate Bryant & Stratton College from other colleges and, more importantly, can help you stand out in the employment market and your future career.” Bryant & Stratton College offers a wide range of Associate and Bach-

Hilbert Promotes Experiential Learning; Restructures Business Programs and Introduces 4+1 Programs Over the last several years, Hilbert College has crafted a plan promoting a four-year college experience that will bolster student involvement and leadership potential – The Hilbert Blueprint. The Hilbert Blueprint promotes a well-rounded student experience over four years. The ‘blueprint’ begins with the Foundations Seminar – a key piece to the First-Year Experience, followed by Sophomore Service, Junior Symposium, and concludes with the Senior Capstone. Hilbert prides itself on promoting experiential learning through an engaging, student-centered campus community and providing leadership, internship, and service-learning opportunities. Hilbert recently restructured its undergraduate business department to introduced four new bachelor degree programs -- business management, global business management, small business management, and sports industry management -- to accommodate the diverse field and the interests of incoming students. The B.S. in Business Management prepares students for today's challenging and highly competitive business environment. master’s degree. These new and innovative combined programs include a B.S. in Criminal Justice/M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration; a B.S. in Forensic Science/M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration; a B.S. in Human Services/Master of Public Administration:

D'Youville College on Frontline of Health Care Education The ebola virus outbreak in west Africa. The cholera epidemic in earthquake ravaged Haiti. National health insurance reform in the United States. Public health workers are responding to crises and building coordinated care systems across the globe. Demand in this field is growing, with the Association for Schools and Programs in Public Health estimating that the United States is facing a shortage of at least 250,000 government public health workers by 2020. Building on D’Youville’s foundation of educating frontline health care workers to treat individual patients, the college announced that in fall 2015, it will launch a bachelor of science in public health program to equip students to provide population-based health services. “I was thrilled to be the first college in the area to get an undergraduate public health program approved,” said Lisa Rafalson, Ph.D., chairwoman and associate professor of health services administration department. “The program is a great fit to our other health professions programs and a great addition to the other programs

that the health services administration department offers.” The program, which was the brainchild of former School of Health Professions dean Dr. Anthony Billittier, as developed based on internal feedback and input from the Erie County Department of Health, numerous state departments of public health (in particular Arizona), the School of Public Health at Albany State University of New York, and health services administration advisory board members, including Catholic Health System, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of western New York. The New York State Education Department approved the program in August, and Daemen College in Amherst has already expressed interest in formalizing ties between D’Youville’s undergraduate program and its master’s of public health program. D’Youville’s public health students will complete one year of biology, one year of chemistry, and one year of biostatistics, Rafalson said. The public health program is designed to

ECC: Start Here. Transfer Anywhere. With college costs skyrocketing, isn’t it time to build toward your ultimate graduation destination in an affordable way? Erie Community College (ECC) offers more than 100 career-focused certificate and degree programs in the areas of Business and Public Service, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Engineering and Technologies, designed to not only advance students forward without drowning them in debt, but allows them to build toward a four-year degree in a sensible way. Consider the following: According to recent findings by the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center, ECC’s average net price for full-time students is the lowest in New York State. Students can enter ECC, earn a two-degree in a variety of highdemand fields, or simply feel their way

through their first college courses (at $179 per credit) before deciding on an educational direction. Once ready, they can transfer their earned credits to one of many local colleges or universities like University at Buffalo, St. Bonaventure and Syracuse University, and enjoy their significant tuition savings en route to a four-year degree. How much can a student save by attending ECC before transferring elsewhere? Based on information from 2014-15 College Board’s Trends in College Pricing, annual tuition and fees at a public four-year college costs an average of $9,139; tuition at a private fouryear runs an average of $31,231. Compare these numbers with time spent at ECC—taking the same classes offered at a traditional four-year—and you’ll see why our programs provide students with a great start toward a limitless future.

A Niagara University Education is Excellent, Affordable & Transformative Founded in 1856, Niagara University is a comprehensive institution, blending the best of a liberal arts and professional education, grounded in a values-based, Catholic tradition. Its colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Hospitality and Tourism Management offer programs at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral level. With more than 80 majors, nearly 60 minors, six preprofessional options, and 4+1 combined master’s programs, NU students are immersed in meaningful real-world learning opportunities from the moment they step foot on campus. All four of the university’s academic colleges have received the highest rankings from the top accreditation boards in their fields. As the first Vincentian university established in the United States, Niagara prepares students for personal and professional success while emphasizing service to the community in honor of St. Vincent de Paul. Whether it’s preparing income taxes for the elderly, tutoring urban elementary school students or conducting breast cancer research with professors, Niagara students strive to assist those less fortunate.

Those types of real-world learning opportunities help Niagara alumni translate their practical education into top jobs within their career fields. According to a recent survey, 95 percent of NU graduates reported being employed within one year of graduation. Graduate students at Niagara are also prepared via outstanding academic programs that accentuate one-onone learning with highly credentialed faculty. The NU approach to learning prepares individuals to excel in their career and to be change leaders in their chosen field. Niagara’s beautiful 160-acre campus, adjacent to the international border between the United States and Canada, overlooks the Niagara River Gorge, just four miles north of the world-famous waterfall. Niagara also continues to strengthen the financial aid packages that it offers to students, doing all that it can to help students attain a world-class education. Minors include health analytics (which launched in fall 2014), environmental science, Spanish for health professionals, and health services management. An assistant professor, Lauren Clay, has been hired to help develop the program’s coursework. Public health students will be required to complete a capstone project in their senior year. Students with a GPA of 3.8 or higher may write an honors thesis while other students may complete internships with local agencies, conduct public service projects, or study abroad. Clay will be organizing domestic service projects and study abroad options. She said she would like to see students make tangible contributions in impoverished areas where needs are great. For instance, Clay, who earned her Ph.D. in disaster science and management, said opportunities abound to provide post-disaster relief She envisions partnering with existing DYC relief programs in places such as Haiti and New Orleans, as well as exploring new project opportunities in disaster-prone areas such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, Japan, the U.S. Gulf Coast, and the U.S. East Coast. ‘’A lot of students want to make a

difference in the world,” Clay said. “This degree will provide them with a great set of skills to do that.” This fall, Rafalson began teaching one of the core courses, Introduction to Public Health, and she said current students’ interest in the program has been high. She said she hopes that in five years, the program will grow to enroll 60 students. Robert P. Murphy, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management, said the college is starting to market the public health program to prospective students. He said the marketing push will include educating students about opportunities in the public health field through mailings and school visits. Murphy said he would not be surprised if the public health program was a magnet for transfer students, who may discover the field as they complete introductory coursework and then search for an undergraduate public health degree program.
