HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE VIENNA? “In its basic structure Vienna has remained a small city, namely in the definition of its center. Everybody recognizes St. Stephen’s Cathedral as the center of Vienna. It is, I think, the only metropolis of the 19th century that has this characteristic. You cannot tell where the center of Rome, London, or Paris is. The fact is that in the metropolis, in general, there are no definite centers; they tend to shift, move, and multiply in the course of history. But for Vienna, even in the 21st century the structure can be described in a concentric diagram.”
