Welcome

From the Desk of NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA

Two weeks into our season and we are already seeing fireworks on tour! I’ve been able to make it to six of these first events and have been so impressed not only with the level of golf but also the high level of sportsmanship. We are so proud to have you wearing your NJGT gear and bag tag around playing golf. You represent the tour and yourselves great! I wanted to remind all members that they have access to an amazing deal with the FORE! Program. Run by the Nebraska Golf Foundation, FORE! Membership gives young golfers like yourselves access to courses all over the state for only $4 per round. This coupled with the free golf being hosted at all City of Omaha Municipality 9-hole golf courses removes the cost barrier that can make golf inaccessible. I’d encourage each of you to take advantage of these wonderful opportunities. Make sure to take your friends out to the City of Omaha Municipality 9-hole courses for free golf! Sincerely, Joe Canny, PGA Junior Golf Director – NJGT (402) 730-8364 jcanny@njgt.org @theNJGT

‘s Tour Tips

Featured Facility Sioux City Country Club Sioux City IA

In 1908, Thomas M. Bendelow, then an aspiring golf course architect and now known as one of America’s greatest pioneers of golf course architecture, designed the golf course at Sioux City Country Club. This par 72, 18-hole golf course, ranging from 4890 to 6400 yards, designed to be challenging for all levels of players. And now the Sioux City Country Club is opening its doors to junior golfers in the NJGT! The Sioux City Country Club has played host to the prestigious PGA Junior Series, the United States premier national junior golf tour. It is also personally one of my (Joe Canny, PGA) favorite golf courses in America and would strongly recommend making the short drive north. The course features tree-lined fairways, beautiful water fixtures and always ideal conditions. I promise you will love playing this golf course and the family will enjoy following along and taking in the beauty the landscape provides. You still have time to register for the Sioux City Country Club’s June 27th NJGT Event! You can learn more about the club at SCCountryClub.com.

We want to start off by congratulating all the golfers who competed in the first GolfTEC Premier Event of the season at The Golf Club at Table Creek. Amazing scores on a tough course! This issue’s GolfTEC Tour Tip relates to sand bunkers. We have found that many junior golfers fear the bunker and struggle in this part of the game. But we are here to help! Playing the ball out of the bunker can actually be one of the easier shots in golf if you know how to play it. You see many PGA and LPGA Tour Professionals fire right at bunkers without fear. You will soon too!

Steps for Success in a Bunker: 1. Establish firm footing 2. Take an open stance A. This restricts your backswing length and steepens the swing 3. Open the clubface to match the address position 4. Ball forward 5. Weight more on front foot 6. Match the length of your backswing and length of your follow-through 7. Strike the sand from 2-4” behind the ball A. Closer to 2” for longer shots and 4” for shorter blasts 8. Do not let the clubface close 9. ACCELERATE! A great drill to work on distance control is the ladder drill. Many of you already do this with putting but try and apply that same principle to bunker practice. You will find ways to adjust your distance whether it is the amount of sand you take or how open your face is. If you have any questions about bunker play or any part of your game, make sure to visit your PGA Professionals at GolfTEC in Omaha! We love supporting the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour each season and look forward to seeing you at a GolfTEC Premier Event this summer. To learn more about GolfTEC of Omaha please click HERE.

Download this Free Mobile App: Started right here in Nebraska by a Cornhusker, GolfStatus is a free mobile app that captures a golfer’s moments of achievement. Golfers can earn free golf, merchandise, exclusive deals, and more just by posting their scores. Using GolfStatus you can also post all your scores to your GHIN Handicap provided by the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour. It is a cool new way to keep records of your game while practicing, have parents track your round while watching at an NJGT event and possibly win some prizes along the way. I see many of you are already using this application and I love following our golfers. If you haven’t created an account you can register online or download the GolfStatus App in the App Store or Marketplace.

Play More with FORE! What is FORE!?

As an extension of other initiatives that first introduce the game, the Nebraska Golf Association created FORE!, an access program that provides junior golfers the opportunity to play golf more frequently at participating NGA member clubs during the months of May, June, July and August. FORE! members can play participating courses across the state for just $4 per round.

Who’s eligible for FORE! membership?

FORE! is not simply a discount card. Although the NGA wants to be as inclusive as possible it also wants members that have been introduced to the game through some sort of instruction and have a basic understanding of both the Rules of Golf and proper Etiquette. That said we require that FORE! applicants meet the following age and eligibility criteria: Age: No minimum age, a golfer is no longer eligible for membership once they hit the date of September 1 following graduation from secondary school (high school). Eligibility: Golfer must meet one of four eligibility requirements that meet the criteria of proper introduction:

• 2014 participant in one of the following certified programs: First Tee; Golf ‘N’ Schools; Great Golf Expectations; LPGA/USGA Girls Golf; NGA Youth on Course; Nebraska Junior Golf Tour; Panhandle Junior Golf Tour and PGA/USGA Sports Academy.

• 2014 participant in a junior golf program at an NGA member club. • 2013-2014 high school golf team participant • Other golfers approved by senior official at NGA member club (i.e. PGA Professional or Club Manager).

How do eligible golfers join the FORE! program?

Applications are available on the FORE! web site (nebgolf.org/FORE), in both paper and online forms. The fee for membership is $10, and in addition to their membership cards, FORE! members receive a NGA membership.

Where can FORE! rounds be played?

FORE! is a statewide initiative in 2014, and is available in most regions of the state with over 40 participating golf courses. For a full list of participating courses, including contact information, please visit the FORE! website at nebgolf.org/ FORE.

How is the FORE! program funded?

The FORE! program is funded by the Nebraska Golf Foundation, whose mission is to promote the growth of golf in Nebraska with an emphasis on making the game and its life-enhancing values accessible to youth. A sizable donation was made to the NGF from the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Championship in support of FORE! In addition, the NGF earmarks a portion of its own fundraising efforts to support the program.
