Resolve to be Ready in 2012 One additional resolution you may have missed: Resolve to be Ready! This nationwide effort hopes to increase awareness and encourage individuals, families, businesses, and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies. If 2011 taught us anything, it was that disaster can strike at any time and any location as a record number of 99 disasters were declared by the federal government. On top of major disasters, localized events affect businesses on a daily basis such as power outages, fires, and computer failures. Even a short disruption can affect a small business but you can help protect your business and your employees by planning now to be prepared for the unexpected.

2. _________

I have designated a place where I can communicate with staff shortly after an emergency in case a power outage makes web-based or electronic communications difficult or impossible.

3. _________

4. _________

5. _________

I have protected my essential data, files, and communications through back-ups at an alternative location or in the “cloud”. I have thought about how I could be involved in community disaster response and recovery through my local government emergency management office, the local Red Cross chapter, the Chamber of Commerce, or other organizations. The faster we all get “back to business” the better it will be for the whole community. I have made sure that I can access and manage our business phone line, even if a disaster has physically damaged our office.
