Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters and on DVD and Blu-ray this month. Note that release dates are subject to change. THE HERO OF COLOR CITY Rated G • In Theaters 10/03 Ok for Kids 4+ Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels This animated tale for the pre-school/kindergarten set follows the adventures of a diverse band of crayons that come alive in a little boy’s room when he drifts off to sleep. Yellow (voiced by Christina Ricci), a timid and fearful crayon, inadvertently awakens two unfinished drawings that threaten to take over Color City. As she embarks on an adventure to discover inner strength and courage, she teams with other crayons and meets fantastical creatures, including Ricky the dragon (Owen Wilson).

From the countryside to the grand capital city, she enthralls all who encounter her, including five noble suitors. Ultimately she must face her fate, punishment for her crime.

“Oh look, there it is again,” I said to myself. “One Chance” has been on my preview lists at various times since last year. Now it’s finally hitting the big screen. The story follows the remarkable journey of Paul Potts, a shy, bullied shop assistant by day and an amateur opera singer by night. Paul became an instant YouTube sensation after being chosen by Simon Cowell for “Britain’s Got Talent,” which he went on to win.
From producer Guillermo del Toro and director Jorge Gutierrez comes this beautifully animated comedy with a unique visual style. The story chronicles the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

Unfortunately, a group of friends fail to follow this rule, and must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of the ancient spirit board. This PG-13 movie edges towards an R rating, so I’m going with ages 15+ on this one.
NEW ON DVD/BLU-RAY: JACK AND THE CUCKOO-CLOCK HEART Rated PG for scary images, suggestive material, some language and smoking On DVD/Blu-ray 10/07 Ok for Kids 8+ Reel Review: 5 of 5 Reels This 19th-century drama follows a man (Mathias Malzieu) whose heart was replaced with a clock when he was born. The situation dictates that he should avoid feeling strong emotions -- including love -- but he just can’t keep his feelings under wraps. Visually stunning, this whimsical fairy tale is set in a wondrous time of amazing inventions and unforgettable characters. It’s all about love and acceptance of others.
THE NEVERENDING STORY: 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION Rated PG for frightening scenes On Blu-ray 10/07 • Ok for Kids 8+ Reel Review: 5 of 5 Reels Young Bastian Bux (Barret Oliver) loves to escape from his troubled life in a dusty old bookstore. When the store owner tells him not to look at the book “The NeverEnding Story,” that’s his invitation to look through the pages, where he’s drawn into the book and becomes part of the story. Great special effects, beautiful scenery, colorful characters, and a “dare to dream” message, this classic tale is not to be missed.

Cyber Bullying: It’s Complicated! Bullying is a word that has almost lost its meaning because it’s been used so often and under so many circumstances. That’s especially true online where cyber bullying is used to describe almost any interaction that makes adults uncomfortable from flaming, gossip and pranks to impersonation, slander and threats. In her new book, It’s Complicated, Danah Boyd points out that “the language of bullying often presumes that there’s a perpetrator and a victim. By focusing on blaming the perpetrator and protecting the victim, well-intended adults often fail to recognize the complexity of most conflicts.” She suggests that parents avoid using the term “bullying” unless behavior meets three criteria identified by Swedish psychology Dan Olweus:
1. Aggression: What’s the intent? Is the perpetrator trying to hurt or intimidate someone? Sometimes behavior that looks like bullying is actually a misguided attempt at humor or a response to stress. 2. Repetition: What’s the frequency? Even the nicest people hurt others on occasion because they are unaware or under stress. Bullying involves repeating a behavior even after the perpetrator understands that it’s damaging to another person. 3. Imbalance: Who has the power? Young people themselves often describe conflict between peers as drama rather than bullying. They seem to understand that bullying involves disproportionate power—a stronger person picks on a weaker one precisely because he or she cannot fight back effectively. Research confirms that
children are 63% more likely to be bullied if they have disabilities or perceived differences (such as being gay or overweight). In situations which meet these three criteria, adults must intervene because bullying has lasting consequences for everyone involved. Research shows that children who are bullied tend to be lonely, anxious and depressed. Children who become bullies are also likely to have underlying social and emotional problems that interfere with healthy relationships. Even children who witness aggression are vulnerable to emotional distress and anxiety.

Of course, Boyd acknowledges that online interactions which fall short of bullying can still be hurtful. Girls are more likely to participate in and be wounded by gossip and rumors especially about looks and sexual behavior. Boys are more likely to participate in pranking—practical jokes that aren’t really funny—and punking which consists of insults and intimidation. All of this happens offline too, but online abuse has several unique features. Some people find it easier to be cruel when they don’t have to deal with consequences directly. Also, online humiliation can be deeper because there are so many witnesses and more long lasting because it’s difficult to eradicate cyber slurs. Online, the child who is behaving poorly may feel there is no risk of punishment, and the child who is tormented may feel there is no escape. Parents are the ones who have to consistently reinforce two messages: 1) Cruelty is always unacceptable. 2) In difficult circumstances, healthy people stay focused on what they can control. Important as it is to talk about these ideas, children benefit more when parents embody them. When adults cultivate their own social and emotional skills, home becomes a sanctuary. Then, when kids encounter aggression and cruelty online or anywhere else, they know they can turn to you for compassion, insight, respect, strength, and strategy.
Social Emotional Learning as one of the best ways to protect a child from being bullied or becoming a bully. Kids who develop these five capacities are less likely to take out their feelings on others and less likely to become targets. •
Self Awareness. Help your children recognize and reflect on their own feelings. Just knowing that he or she feels angry or sad, frustrated or vulnerable gives a child more options.

Self Management. Children aren’t born with self control. They need help in learning to how to insert thought between feeling and action. Children who can’t manage their impulses are more likely to lash out in response to provocation or stress. A child who is able to calm himself and think through a problem is less likely to say or do cruel things and less likely to trigger hostility in others.
•
Social Awareness. Teaching kids to be tolerant is one of the best ways to prevent aggression. From an early age, encourage your children to be respectful, tolerant and even curious about people who are different in appearance, abilities, point of view or cultural background. Relationship Skills. Research suggests that children are less likely to be unkind to others when they have high quality friendships. Some kids make friends easily but others need coaching. Decision Making. If a child is miserable because of what others are doing, the most empowering thing a parent can do is help her refocus on what she can do. Although retaliating in kind is tempting, it’s rarely the most effective strategy. Instead, help your child think through different ways of responding to aggression. Sometimes the best option is to redirect attention to what’s positive—the many “likes” instead of the one snarky comments. In other cases, it may make sense to limit contact with people who behave poorly by using the controls available in most social networks. PASSIVE FUNDRAISING Equals Dollars For Your Child’s School Clipping box tops, shopping with loyalty cards, even eating out– they can all add up to big bucks for your child’s school!
N
ow that the new school year is well underway you may begin to hear the plea from your child’s school Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) to participate in fundraisers. Private and public schools alike rely on fundraising to provide muchneeded supplies for teachers, fund enrichment programs, buy new computers, replace tired playground equipment, and book engaging speakers, performances and field trips. If you don’t have the time to volunteer or sell products, there are many great ways to raise money without doing anything (additional) at all. Most schools participate in a form of “passive fundraising,” where just by shopping at certain stores or restaurants or using a loyalty card entitles the school of your choice to free money.

Cut, Clip, Earn With more than 92,000 K-8 schools participating in the country, one such program is Box Tops for Education. The labels are featured on the boxes of many popular food items, office supplies, disposable tableware and bags, produce, and apparel such as Hanes packaged undergarments. For every box top label you send in the school will receive 10 cents. All that is needed is a sturdy pair of scissors to cut the label and a school coordinator to collect, count and submit the labels. After going through the effort of cutting out ten labels, you may wonder, “why do all of this work for only a dollar?” Those dollars really add up, according to Gabriela Chahwan, Box Top coordinator for Sea Gate Elementary School for the past two years. If
there are 800 children at the school and each one sends in ten labels per month, that’s $80, she explains. After nine months, the school could earn $720, which could buy a lot of classroom supplies, or even a couple of new tablets for the school. Last year, Sea Gate used its Box Top reward money to give every teacher a $50 gift iTunes gift card to buy teaching apps. Classrooms competed with each other to bring in the most Box Tops to win goody bags for the whole class. Since entering the Box Top program, Sea Gate has earned nearly $32,000. “You have make it easy for the collection and you have to set a goal,” says Gulfview Middle School PTO President Wendy Gurevitch. “We ask ourselves, ‘what can $1,000 buy?’ and thean we set a goal to purNEAPOLITANfamily • October 2014

chase that item.” Last year, Gulfview Middle School used $1,000 of its reward money to purchase a new panther mascot uniform for the school’s athletic and spirit events. This year, the middle school has set the goal of collecting enough Box Tops to buy a large screen television for the school cafeteria, which can scroll announcements and special messages during lunch. Gulfview’s Box Top Chair Karen Hanlon says that to encourage participation, the students receive a token for every ten box tops they bring in which can be redeemed to attend ice cream socials or buy an ice pop while waiting in the bus line. The Village School, which has earned more than $16,000 since it began participating in the program, is leading Collier County’s schools so far this school year, with the new Mason Classical Academy, Donahue Academy (Ave Maria), Gulf Coast Charter Academy and Sea Gate Elementary rounding out the top five. Other high earning schools over the past five years include Lely and Naples Park Elementary Schools and the Community School of Naples. Currently, Memorial Elementary School in Arcadia, Florida, which earned only $2 last school year, is leading Florida for the 2014-2015 school year with more than $500 earned so far. The potential is endless, however, as national leader Grandy Primary School in Camden, NC, has proven with an average yearly return of $4,000 per year and lifetime earnings of more than $51,000. Box Top money is sent to schools every December and April. (Current year rankings are based on Box Tops collected after the final submission date in spring of 2014.) Shop with a Purpose If you shop at Target you don’t even need a school coordinator to earn free money for your school. By enrolling in a Target credit or debit card and designating one school of choice, Target will send 1% of your purchase directly to your child’s principal, to be used however he or she chooses. Even better, you save 5% off every purchase plus free shipping just by using the card. Since the Target “Take Charge of Education” program began in 1997, Target has given $387 million back to K-12 public and private schools. Anyone in your family or in the community can designate the school of their choice with the card. According to Target’s website, 60 Naples schools and eight schools in Immokalee received a check from Target in August 2014, with seven of those schools receiving more than $1,000. schools had fewer than 100 cardholders who designated that school for the free money, so there is a lot of potential for those schools to earn even more money by raising awareness about the card. The Village School had the largest haul at $1,878 with Laurel Oak Elementary and Gulf Coast High School earning well over $1,300 each. You may have purchased the bulk of your school supplies already, but Office Depot offers 5% of your purchase of school and office supplies back to the school of your choice all year long. With a goal of “ending the teacher-funded classroom,” Office Depot issues a quarterly merchandise credit to the principal at schools that have registered for an identification number. Schools that do not already have an identification number easily can request one and then communicate that number or make identification cards for the parents. If you forget to show the school’s number when making a purchase, an adjustment can be made anytime during that quarter by bringing the receipt to the store or filling out a credit online. Excluded items include electronics, ink/toner cartridges, printing services and postage. We’ve got spirit, yes we do! You have spirit and dinner, too! Spirit nights at a local restaurant are perhaps one of the most fun ways to passively earn money for your school while feeding your family and visiting with friends. Many restaurants are happy to designate a spirit night for your school where they will give a percentage of all purchases (take-out, too!) made during a specific time period or all day simply by showing a flyer or mentioning the school’s name. Popular choices for area schools are California Pizza Kitchen, Red Brick Pizza, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Il Primo Pizza & Wings, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream, Fuji Sushi Bar & Asian Bistro and Hurricane Grill & Wings. Menchie’s and Chick-fil-A can send a costumed representative to school to promote your spirit night in afternoon car line as a reminder to attend, adding to the excitement and fun of raising money for your child’s school. All of the passive fundraising money can be combined with other PTO and school fundraisers to enrich a child’s education, according to Nina Birtolo, PTO treasurer at Sea Gate Elementary and volunteer coordinator at Pine Ridge Middle School. A single field trip can run about $5-$7 per child for admission and $100 per bus to get to the venue. Bringing in an author or performance can cost
around $1,000, but at least the entire school can benefit from the experience, she explains. Birtolo pointed out that fundraising money also is critical in purchasing new titles for the libraries and new rugs and supplies for the classrooms such as bulletin board materials and printer ink. 17 Great Things O About 4-H
ur search for different activities for our children led us to 4-H. We discovered that 4-H is much more than farming and raising animals. 4-H is robotics, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), expressive arts, citizenship, leadership, and more.
Here are seventeen reasons why 4-H could be right for your child.
1.
Fun. Our children are designing robots, showing dogs, learning crafts, developing leadership skills, lobbying the state legislature, managing events and serving people in need. 4-H members in the U.S. are exploring hydroponic gardening, renewable energy sources, bioengineering, collecting data on butterflies through WINGS, a partnership between kids and professional scientists, and many more activities.
2.
Freedom. Kids can explore anything that interests them. Support, connections and mentoring is available through 4-H. Collier County 4-H has groups devoted to everything from archery to rrobots. If a group doesn’t exist that is of interest to your child, you can start a new one!
3.
All 50 States Have 4-H Programs. 4-H is part of the U.S. government Cooperative Extension Service. Locally, 4-H Youth Development is part of the Florida Extension Service and a part of the University of Florida. One of the benefits of 4-H participation is your children will be able to continue participating even if your family moves to a different area.
4.
4-H is Urban, Suburban and Rural. Programs include clubs, afterschool activities, camps, fairs, events and conventions. Activities can be local, county, state, regional or national.

Low Cost. There are no uniforms or equipment to purchase to get started.
Varied Time Commitment. You may have more time available to devote to 4-H at certain times of the month or year, and that is okay. There is no set number of hours required to participate.

Opportunity to be Yourself. Peer pressure to be part of certain groups is not a part of 4-H. It is okay to be an individual without being singled out.

Open to Youth Ages 5 to 18. Because it’s open to such a wide variety of ages, 4-H is a great activity for all children in the family. 14

Projects and Goals. Kids design their own projects and set goals for what they want to learn. This empowerment process will teach lifeskills and foster ambition. The projects can be displayed at regional 4-H fairs, giving children a sense of accomplishment.

Make Friends Through Shared Interests. A great way to create lasting friendships is through activities that can be enjoyed together. There is always something to do or talk about.

Orlando - Disney World = FUN!
L
iving in southwest Florida certainly makes short vacations in Orlando an easy reality. Almost every family I know has been to Disney World numerous times and, truth be told–most parents could easily skip yet another Disney-themed trip. This winter, why not schedule an Orlando trip filled with fun but minus the mouse? There’s something extra relaxing about taking 3-4 days to recharge when it doesn’t include a flight or long car ride or a packed itinerary of activities. It’s an even bigger treat when the kids are happy and active and you feel pampered. I spent four days in Orlando recently and found a slew of entertaining and relaxing activities without ever setting foot in Disney World. The majority of our fun was at the Orlando World Center Marriott. The largest Marriott in the world, it is a AAA FourDiamond Resort with 2,009 guestrooms. The newly remodeled suites are perfect for families and it’s great location for a relaxed family vacation. Accommodations Our suite had a separate bedroom with king-size bed, a great room with large dining table, and a living area with a queen-size pullout couch. The suite’s bathroom had a vanity separate from the bathroom making it convenient to share with kids. Plus, you could enter the bathroom from the main living area or the bedroom. A spacious balcony ran the length of the suite and looked down on the resort’s Falls Pools Oasis. TV’s in both the livingroom and the bedroom mean that parents and kids can both enjoy a late night movie. 16

Dining Out There are plenty of choices for your meals at Orlando World Center Marriott. The Hawk’s Landing Steakhouse & Grille offers an upscale dining experience with steaks and seafood and an excellent wine list. Siro Urban Italian Kitchen is an Italian kitchen focusing on local flavors and family-style dishes. The mixologists at Siro will delight you with innovative drinks and craft beers. Mikado Japanese Steakhouse is a definite kid favorite–they’ll have a blast as their chef prepares their meal tableside. For breakfast and brunch, Solaris features a daily 80-item buffet that should not be missed. There also is a food court with casual and affordable dining options, a poolside grill, a Starbuck’s and a sport bar. If you prefer to get away from the resort for some of your meals, Orlando’s “restaurant row” is just minutes away. Water Fun The Falls Pool Oasis is the highlight of the resort and where your family will likely spend most of your stay. The pool has been ranked as one of the “world’s coolest hotel pools” by Forbes. With two 200-foot winding waterslides and one 90-foot speed slide, it’s easy to see why it’s gotten such great press. The resort also has a Splash Zone with a zero-entry pool for hanging out with the littlest family members. The huge palm-lined pool features several waterfalls and a backdrop of rock outcroppings. The tiered seating layout offers plenty of room for lounging while you keep a watchful eye on the kids. Tune Up Your Golf Game For adults, the Bill Madonna Golf Academy at Hawk’s Landing Golf Club might be the biggest draw. Bill is one of Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Teachers in America” and after participating in one group lesson and one private lesson, I’m not exaggerating when I say he is the best teacher I’ve ever worked with. In the one-hour private lesson he fixed a swing flaw I’ve had since I started to golf years ago. His instructions are simple, easy to understand and possible to replicate. If your children are getting into the game–or you want them to–a lesson with Bill is a great way to introduce them to golf. Relax at the Spa I found time during my stay to get a deep tissue massage at the resort spa (as if I wasn’t relaxed enough!). The Spa is located adjacent to a quiet outdoor pool where I lounged for a bit before my treatment. The spa offers various massages, facials, manicures and pedicures. The Richard Petty Driving Experience Offered the opportunity to be strapped into a stock car and then sent flying down a track, my mouth said “Sure, why not?” while my brain was saying “Are you nuts?” Once committed I refused to back out so there I was trackside wearing a fire retardant jumpsuit, a hood over my hair, and a helmet on my head. After a safety lesson, I shimmied through the window of the stock car (the only way to enter or exit) and had my neck braced and bolted to the seat. The professional driver did his best to reassure me and then he floored it. Within seconds we were spinning around a track at 150 mph and I simply sat back and enjoyed the ride. 10 Social Media Tips for Teens S
ocial media is one of the most powerful forms of communication teens and adults use today. As parents we sometimes assume that our tweens and teens already know the rules but social media responsibility isn’t a one-time discussion. Check in with your kids often to be sure they are making wise decisions online and on their smart phones. Be sure they understand that you will be keeping an eye out to ensure that they are following the rules and exercising good judgement. These 10 rules are a great way to start the social media discussion with your teens: 1. Respect yourself. Show off how great you are and represent yourself accordingly on social media. Make sure your photos are appropriate. Do not post or text photos of yourself naked, dressed provocatively, or making obscene gestures. Avoid uploading anything you would not want your grandmother to see on the front cover of the New York Times! Social media plays a major role in building and ruining personal images.
2. Post with positivity. If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t post. Avoid ranting or arguing with people on social media and posting when you’re upset. You may be upset with your mom but it would be very disrespectful to share your anger with the world. Share positivity and good vibes on the web. 3. No “twerking” videos. Do not post videos that portray negative images of you, your friends or family involving profanity, sex, nudity, crime, drugs, discrimination, violence, lewd gestures, or anything that could be offensive to the public. Keep your video posts kid-friendly. You don’t want a video of you intoxicated and “twerking” 18

inappropriately with friends to surface while you are campaigning for political office in 20 years. 4. Know your followers. Allowing strangers to follow you can be very dangerous. Even if their account looks harmless, be aware that there are many fake accounts where creeps follow their prey. If you don’t know them, ignore them and don’t let them follow you. Also, use privacy settings to protect your accounts from being viewed by strangers. 5. Be careful what you post for likes. You don’t want to end up “instafamous” for something that could destroy your future. Keep your posts positive, dignified and smart. Social media is a great way to build a web presence for future endeavors. Don’t compromise your future for “likes” or “followers.” 6. Play nice. No one has the right to harass anyone based on their sex, race, age, orientation, personal beliefs, values, etc. The impact of harassment is heightened and can have deadly consequences when acted out over the Internet. Avoid engaging in cyber brawls on Twitter and status face-offs on Facebook. If you have a personal issue with someone, keep it off the Internet. If anyone is saying things about you on social media, report their account and let a relative know. 7. Think before you post. Nothing is ever truly deleted, so be very sure about what you post before you hit the post or send button. Once you post a picture or a status it is stored on the site’s server and can normally be retrieved even if you delete it
from your profile. 8. If you see something, say something. Report anything inappropriate. Block or un-follow people that post negative comments on your timeline, make you uncomfortable or harass you in any way. 9. Manage your use wisely. Too much of anything can become a bad thing. Is social media keeping you from getting work done? Try putting time limits on your social media usage to make sure it is not impacting your productivity. 10. Don’t post your every move. Leave some information to share with your real friends and family over the phone. Your best friend would probably want to know you and your boyfriend broke up before the whole world knows via your relationship status change. Also be careful sharing info when you are going out of town. You don’t want to alert a potential burglar that you will be in the Bahamas for a week with your family. As a teenager it is important that you are aware, informed, and understand the risks that come along with using social media. Naples Botanical Garden to Reopen with New Visitor Center
N
aples Botanical Garden will reopen Thursday, October 23, 2014 and debut the new Eleanor and Nicholas Chabraja Visitor Center. During summer closure large scale projects such as the completion of the center and three new gardens, the LaGrippe Orchid Garden, Irma’s Garden and Kathryn’s Garden are being completed. These new gardens are designed by renowned Landscape architect Raymond Jungles and are adjacent to the new Visitor Center. The 25,000 square foot Chabraja Visitor Center has been designed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Standards. This center will serve to increase the number and variety of lectures, exhibits, events, and educational symposiums at Naples Botanical Garden along with enhanced café, ticketing and retail space. Fogg Café located in the new visitor center will be operated by Lurçat Catering, part of the D’Amico & Partners brand, who will also handle catering for special events. The Garden will reopen Thursday, October 23 with a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Regular Garden hours of 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. (8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays) begin the following day. onarch Therapy’s newest Caterpillar Kids Club has been inching up to launch this month on Mondays from 4-5pm. he David Lawrence Center, Collier County’s only comprehensive, not-for-profit mental health and substance abuse treatment facility serving children, adults and families has opened registration for the Making Positive Choices Youth Prevention Group. Making Positive Choices is a psycho-educational series that helps adolescents (14-18) who are experiencing difficulties making choices that support a healthy lifestyle take their life in the right direction. Whether they’re having problems with their peers, disregarding rules or experimenting with substance use, the Making Positive Choices group can help guide adolescents toward making the right decisions. Making Positive Choices educates participants on the value of good health, positive decision making, recognizing risk-taking and substance abuse, understanding how the media impacts personal health, improving family communication, building healthy relationships and managing stress, anger and other emotions. A’llawna is an extremely intelligent 9-year-old who battles with oppositional defiant disorder and ADD. When she was referred to the new Children’s Community Action Team she was having violent outbursts, getting suspended and was kicked out of her after school program. Explosive arguments with her mother resulted in routine Crisis Unit admissions. Through the program’s familycentered intensive mentoring and treatment services, they received the comprehensive support necessary to overcome the loss of her beloved father and learned behavior modification and anger management skills. The team also got her into more challenging gifted classes. Tricks For I Getting Rid of Those Treats
f you’re like me, Halloween goes like this: Wrangle kids into costumes. Take pictures. Tag along while kids run from house to house, collecting candy. Occasionally fix costumes and hold heavy candy bags. Watch kids sort candy, count candy, eat candy. Wait for kids to fall asleep late, post sugar rush. Sneak candy from kids’ bags. It’s fun and exhausting, like any good celebration. And like many good celebrations, it leaves behind cleanup work–only in this case, the cleanup issue in question is how to dispose of all that candy. If you’ve scratched your head over this dilemma before, I have a few solutions for you: Let Them Eat Do you ever wonder why we let our children collect so many sweets if we have no intention of having them eat it all? After all, they do work hard (run around the neighborhood in clumsy getups) to get it. They “deserve” to enjoy some of it. But how much and when can vary widely depending on your view of sugary diets. Our house follows a closed cabinet policy. Our children know to ask before grabbing a snack. So when it comes to Halloween candy we typically say, “one piece.” The Halloween haul takes a long time to disappear, but we know they’re not ruining their teeth or their health. You may dole out your candy piecemeal this way or attach a healthy-eating rule such as requiring your children to eat a piece of fruit before having any candy. Lunchtime provides another opportunity to whittle down your stockpile of treats. Let your child select a candy to pack in their lunch bag in place of a cookie or dessert. Or you can create a candy countdown for an upcoming event, like a holiday, a special visitor or vacation. Make paper links of construction paper cut into ½-inch wide by 3-inch long strips - one for each day of the countdown. Glue each strip into a loop, linking each successive loop into the one ahead before gluing. Tape or glue a piece of candy to each strip. Hang from the wall or ceiling. For the countdown, simply have your child tear off one loop with candy each day until the awaited day arrives. Give It Away There’s no reason to pitch good candy, particularly when there are those who’d love to receive a special treat. After you’ve sorted through your children’s stash to remove any broken or unwrapped pieces (and left a few for your kids), you can package them up to give away. They realize the need to discourage excess consumption of sugary treats. But they also recognize the economics of collecting Halloween candy. So they bargain sweets out of kids’ homes by offering to “buy” Halloween candy. Some offer cash per pound, while others trade toys for quantities of candy. Two Naples dentists offering candy buybacks are: The Brace Place and Children’s Dentistry of Naples. Brace Place buybacks will be held from November 3rd through the 6th between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. The office is located at 5641 Naples Blvd., Naples, (239) Children’s Dentistry will buy back candy between 8:00 a.m. and noon and 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. from November 3-6. Their office is at 3021 Airport Road, Naples, (239) 262-3898. If your dentist doesn’t do this but you feel a need to compensate your children for their candy, consider your own buyback program. Offer to swap so many pounds of candy for a new toy, or better yet, book, they’ve been eyeing at the store. Just be sure once you’ve “bought” the candy you promptly remove it from your house before your children want it back–unless you are buying it for yourself. Get Cooking You can also use up leftover Halloween candy the same way you use up leftover turkey at Thanksgiving: hide it in a recipe. This is easiest using chocolate candies. Simply break them into smaller pieces, if necessary and mix into chocolate chip cookie dough. Then bake. Or melt down chocolates for brownies or fondue. To make use of a wider variety of candies, set up an ice cream sundae bar. Crush larger candies and place into bowls to use as ice cream toppings. With a strategy or two in hand for where the excess treats will go, you can relax this Halloween and let your children ring doorbell after doorbell. Use Halloween as an excuse to go through your closets and create “costumes” for your child to keep in a dress-up bin (bonus: you can also create a pile of things to donate or pack away for summer). Be creative: graduation gowns can become wizard robes, flannel shirts and jeans can outfit the perfect cowboy, and silk scarves make great princess dresses! If your child wants to invite friends to your place, enlist a relative or older sibling to dig through the closets and come up with some cute costumes that the kids can “model” for the grown-ups. You can even give prizes for categories like scariest, most creative, or silliest. Put on some music as they show off their duds, and have a ball! Host a Harvest Feast As a parent, the thought of trekking from house to house and collecting candy that will hype up my kids (until I eventually eat it all while they sleep), well, it’s just not that appealing. Chances are, there are other parents you know who feel the same, or whose kids have a dietary restriction that makes them dread Halloween. As it turns out, this is a great excuse to host a potluck. Each guest brings something “safe” for his or her child, and you can even specify foods that are off limits in an email or invitation. This way no one has to stress about feeding their child before the party, and the grown-ups can actually relax and enjoy themselves. You can even give your get-together a “seasonal” theme by asking everyone to feature an autumn ingredient, like apples or squash. Whatever your family decides to do for Halloween this year, remember that it doesn’t have to revolve around candy.
