Birthdays are a hot topic of conversation among parents. Party or no party? Invite the entire class or just a few friends? Request donations or no gifts? Plan a theme party or keep it simple? The choices are endless. For me, there are no right or wrong answers. What works for my family may not work for yours, and vice versa. So this month, we’ve given you the information you need to help you plan the celebration that fits your family best. July brings with it our biggest contest of the year: our birthday party contest! You can win one of eight great birthday parties, just by entering on our website. You can enter to win each party once per day, until July 26, when the winner will be drawn at random. Go to page 37 for details. In case you don’t capture one of the prizes, check page 38, where we have a list of local businesses that provide everything you need to make your next party extra special. Is your budget tight this year, or you simply don’t want to plan a party? Check out Sarah Lyon’s article on page 44 for ideas of how to celebrate your child’s special day without a party. Have you encountered any sticky situations at a birthday party as either a host or guest? On page 40, writer Janeen Lewis offers practical advice for both adults and kids on how to properly handle those scenarios. Parties provide the perfect opportunity for us to teach our kids about being gracious and grateful. Christina Katz has tips page 42 on getting our kids to write thank you notes, using a laid-back, relaxed approach. Happy July!

or the first time in more than 30 years, lion cubs have been born at the Naples Zoo. First-time mother 13-yearold Shani gave birth to three cubs. Shani and her mate, 10-year-old Masamba, were matched by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, which is a breeding program that works to create sustainable populations of threatened and endangered species. “The pair has been recommended for breeding since 2013, so we’ve been waiting for these cubs for a long time,” said Liz Harmon, director of Animal Programs at Naples Zoo. “Although Shani is older than the average first-time lion mother, the cubs are all doing very well, and it is wonderful to see her being such a good mom.” Zoo veterinarian Dr. Lizzy Arnett-Chinn and Naples Zoo’s animal care team are cautiously optimistic that the cubs will continue to thrive and are giving Shani the solitude she needs to care for her young. Shani and her cubs are monitored by a den camera and she has been observed protecting and caring for her babies. Visit napleszoo.org for additional information.

Seacrest Student Earns Girl Scouts’ Highest Honor

I

t took two years of planning, executing, and presenting a community service project, but Saffron Buxton has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award. “It’s the highest honor you can achieve in Girl Scouts,” said Buxton, a rising senior at Seacrest Country Day School in Naples. To earn a Gold Award, a Girl Scout must develop and complete a community service project that will positively affect the community and showcase leadership skills. “It took a lot of work, and a lot of time, effort, and coordination to get it all done,” Buxton said. “You have to be really dedicated to what you’re doing. I feel a sense of accomplishment.” Buxton developed her Gold Award project to help dogs at the Humane Society Naples. She assembled fleece, no-sew dog blankets that would stay with each dog who got adopted or fostered. “That way, it gave the dog some consistency,” she explained. “It’s like a kid with a favorite toy.” She also created brochures for families about what to expect when adopting a shelter dog.

Buxton held seminars and workshops at the Humane Society Naples and at Temple Shalom, where she taught others how to make the blankets, including other Girl Scout troops, children who have special needs, and her classmates. For more information, visit gsgcf.org or seacrest.org.

YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH

S

By Dr. Jose F. Salazar, Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida

Helping Your Kids Stay Active

chool is out, and it’s that time of the year when the fun starts. Yes, fun for our children. For parents, however, it can be challenging to keep our children engaged in physical activities and maintain healthy habits during the summer months. As a doctor, I often am asked what parents can do to keep their children active throughout the day. I tell parents that even though staying active is very important, they do not have to spend the whole day on physical activities. Sixty minutes a day of physical activity that includes aerobic exercise and muscle strengthening is sufficient. While an hour a day may seem like a lot of time for your child, those 60 minutes do not have to be completed doing the same activity. They can be broken down into two or three different activities through the day. In this generation, electronics play a big part in a child’s life. With access to so many devices (television, smartphones, tablets, computers, etc.), children forget the importance of healthy habits and physical activity. They spend, on average, more than seven hours per day using electronics. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than one or two hours each day of total screen time for children. Now, I am not saying that all electronics have a negative impact in our children; they can be a helpful resource to integrate physical activities in their daily routine. There are various apps that children can use to access multiple videos of exercises that are suitable for them. There also are many resources available in the community, including: schools, churches, county and city parks programs, community centers, and/or sports camp programs. If you don’t have access to such programs, stay active as a family: take a walk, go to the park, go bicycling, play sports, or encourage your children to play in the back yard (jump rope, Frisbee, hula hooping, Twister, four square, etc.). When planning activities, consider the type of activity, time of the day, and the age of the child. Plan accordingly, and be sure that safety and supervision are at the top of your list. To encourage your children to engage in physical activities this summer, consider sports gear or equipment as gifts when rewarding them for academic performance and achievements. Let’s not forget that nutrition plays a big part in keeping our

children healthy. Keep plenty of fresh fruits, healthy snacks, and water at hand – make it easy for your children to eat healthy. One of three children in the United States is either overweight or obese. Weight gain can turn into obesity, which is a very serious problem that affects our entire nation. It is easy to gain weight but difficult to lose it. We must not allow the fun time of summer to become a time that we will regret in the future. Have a wonderful, healthy, active, and safe summer.

COLLIER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Texting and Driving Now Illegal in FL

T

exting while driving has long been considered dangerous and even illegal in some states. Now, deputies across the state of Florida can stop and ticket motorists who text behind the wheel. Gov. Rick DeSantis signed a bill into law in May that allows deputies to ticket drivers for texting while driving. The law went into effect July 1. Under the new law, phones still can be used for calls and navigation, as well as to read emergency messages such as weather alerts. Before July 1, texting while driving was considered a secondary offense, meaning you couldn’t be pulled over for that infraction alone. Instead, if a deputy pulled you over for a primary offense, such as speeding or running a stop sign, he could also cite you for texting while driving. Now that texting and driving has become a primary offense, motorists can be stopped for using their phones while operating a vehicle, even if they aren’t speeding or breaking other rules of the road. The one exception is that motorists still will be allowed to use their phones while their vehicle is stopped. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is working to alert drivers of the new law, and educate them about the dangers of texting while driving. But it’s also important that parents follow these rules for

their children, and remind teenage drivers who are more likely to drive distractedly. While the law has already gone into effect, certain aspects won’t be enforced until Oct. 1. That includes a provision that prohibits all types of phone usage in work and school zones. Deputies will begin warning motorists of this change in the fall but won’t enforce it until January. Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk has long advocated for tougher state laws cracking down on texting while

driving. “I’m happy to see that this law has made texting while driving a primary offense,” he said. “We all know distracted driving is dangerous. Now our deputies can crack down on this behavior to make Collier County an even safer place.” Concerned about your teen texting while driving? Enroll him or her in the CCSO’s Teen Driving Academy. You can find more information about the program at colliersheriff.org.

COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

By Jennifer Kupiec

An Enhanced High School Experience

C

ollier County Public Schools recently celebrated the success of its Class of 2019, with more than 3,200 graduates earning a record $44,830,028 in scholarships. While many are familiar with the district’s traditional high schools, such as Barron Collier and Gulf Coast, others have asked what makes Lorenzo Walker Technical High School (LWH) different. Just this year, the school saw 16 students graduate not only with high school diplomas, but also with technical certificates from Lorenzo Walker Technical College (LWTC) and associate degrees from Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW). “Most students consider and attend LWH because of our partnership with LWTC; however, not everyone knows what career interest they have when they enter high school,” said LWH Principal Jeff Rexford. The school offers courses dedicated to career exploration that all students take during their first two years. That exposure helps students identify potential career pathways they can pursue by starting at LWTC while in high school – an educational opportunity that typically would cost an adult $4,000-$7,000, depending on the program. “A lot of it comes down to the support of my family, both at home and my family here [at LWH]. This place, especially with its smaller size, really is a family,” said recent LWH graduate Leonardo Gutierrez. “Our counselors are amazing, and the staff is very involved with my success.” Gutierrez, who has been involved in the school’s advisory council and served as student council president the past two years, has a unique connection to LWH. His mother and father met as students at the school. After moving away from the area, they decided to return to Naples so their son could reap the benefits the school offers. With an interest in architecture, Gutierrez entered LWTC’s drafting program. AutoCAD certification in hand, he ultimately found a love for engineering. “I’m trying to work toward sustainability,” he explained. “Whether it’s reducing plastic in our ecosystems or just making

things more efficient, that’s my main focus. I want to be part of the solution and not the problem.” Gutierrez is headed to the University of South Florida in the fall to study chemical engineering. “Whenever I speak to community members about our students, I tell them that I admire and respect that a group of students made a brave decision in eighth grade to enroll at LWH. Many leave what has been familiar to them their whole school-age lives to pursue their passion and goals. They balance high school, extracurricular activities, volunteering, and the coursework at LWTC and FSW, two post-secondary institutions,” explained Rexford. “If I didn’t go to LWH and I didn’t have these amazing people behind me, I would not be even close to as successful,” said Gutierrez. “Everyone says that we don’t have a normal high school experience; I think we have an enhanced one.”

SWFL Staycation Guide: 10 family-friendly vacations less than an hour from home

ith summer in full flow, this is the time to plan your family vacation. If you’re not in the mood to fly or road trip this summer, or if you simply cannot get extra time off work, consider a staycation at a nearby resort instead. The main goal of a staycation is to stay nearby without the hustle and bustle of planning an itinerary of activities. In addition, a staycation has no flight cost, car rental fees, or huge gas fillups. All you need to worry about is finding the right hotel that the whole family will enjoy. Here are 10 ideas of where to stay during your family summer staycation this year. Marriott Crystal Shores - Marco Island This resort is ideal for a family staycation. With three zeroentry pools, a waterslide, boardwalk beach access, water sports rentals, beach chair/umbrella set up, and private cabanas, families have lots of options for water fun. In addition, there are myriad game options, including giant chess, table tennis, billiards, bocci ball, shuffleboard, corn hole, and other lawn games. Every afternoon there is a free appetizer/drink tasting, happy hour discounts, and poolside activities. There is a kids’ club on site, as well as a pizza place and Stilts, a restaurant overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Rooms are all two- and three-bedroom villas with balcony and gulf-view options. Rates average around $500 a night, which include parking and wi-fi. Although this is on the pricier side, there is a way to get a large discount. The Crystal Shores is a 16

Marriott Vacation Property, which means that if you call and ask about ownership, the nightly rate will drop significantly if you attend a one-hour information session. JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort The recently renovated JW Marriott has it all. From 12 dining options to newly decorated guest rooms and suites, your staycation here will be memorable. The whole family can enjoy two pools (one with a waterslide), water sport rentals, sailing and Everglades excursions, and on-site shopping. Parents can indulge by using Marriott’s world-class spa services or go for a round of golf at two nearby courses available to resort guests. Note that the spa area is adults-only and includes a rooftop pool deck and restaurants. Day passes are available for those 21 and older. The kids can have their own day of fun and be dropped off with trained counselors at the on-site kids’ club. During the day and into the night, there are various poolside and beachside activities/shows for the entire family. Rates start around $400 a night, yet the JW Marriott offers a number of specials and packages throughout the summer. Take advantage of this renovated property and enjoy a little family luxury close to home. Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort Another recently renovated hotel, the Hilton Marco Island, now has even more appeal for your family staycation. Located NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2019

right on the gulf, the Hilton offers four dining options, a newly finished spa, hot tub, and a large pool. A wide range of excursions can be booked right on the resort’s website, such as airboat rides, art classes for kids, and bike and water sport rentals. The activity room is open for most of the day and there are tons of fun family games like foosball, table tennis, board games, and arts and crafts. In addition, there are scheduled beach activities, including volleyball, horseshoe, bowling, water balloon toss, and football contests. Rates start near $300 a night and do not include parking or resort fees. For a little discount, check online, as Hilton often offers Florida resident deals and other packages to locals. If you aren’t interested in spending the night, Hilton offers day passes for $35 per person. It includes a pool chair, towel, parking, and two beverages at the bar. Tickets can be purchased at the front desk. Marco Ocean Beach Resort For a little more of a budget stay, consider the Marco Ocean Beach Resort as your staycation destination. This oceanfront property has a large rooftop pool and free poolside smoothies in the afternoon. Happy hour specials are daily, and there are six dining options on-site. Marco Ocean Beach also has a spa for adults and a hot tub for guests. Guest suites start at about $200 a night and are oneor two-bedrooms with a kitchen. The concierge can arrange for nearby excursions, fishing trips, or water sport rentals. Hyatt Regency Coconut Point - Bonita Springs The Hyatt Regency Coconut Point is a spectacular oasis and a perfect spot for your family staycation. The hotel boasts a miniwaterpark, which includes five waterslides, a lazy river, and four pools. There are two speed slides and a tube slide for older kids (48 inches and taller), a corkscrew slide for kids 42 inches and taller, and a small slide for toddlers. In addition, there are lawn games such as corn hole, giant Jenga, giant Connect Four, a rock climbing wall, and more. Fire pits, six dining options, a nature trail, adult spa, and a kids’ club are all on-site as well. Pool access is for guests only (wristbands required) and max occupancy for a room is four people, including children. The resort provides ferry access to a private beach island in Estero Bay with lounge chairs, umbrellas, and picnic areas.

NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2019

Rates vary depending on the time of year, but summer prices start at under $200 a night for a standard room. The resort also offers a variety of suites. There is a $30 resort fee. Pool day passes and cabana rentals are also available, starting at $65 per adult and $45 per child through Resort Pass. Guest self parking is $16 per day. Hyatt Residence Club - Bonita Springs This is the sister property of the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point. The Residence Club is less than a mile away from the Hyatt Regency and each allows guests to use the waterslides and facilities at the neighboring resort. The ferry also is available for guests to take to the private island, so both resorts offer beach access. You may just be content here though, as there is enough fun for the family with a lazy river, four pools, and hot tubs. Rooms here are one- and two-bedroom suites, and rates start at about $200 a night. Because this is part of the Hyatt Vacation Club properties, there are discounts if you attend an informational session. Adjacent to the property is a golf course, and guests can use the spa and kids’ club of the neighboring Hyatt Regency. Ritz Carlton Naples Beach If you are looking for a luxurious family staycation, the Ritz Carlton Naples may be just the place. This oceanfront property has two pools (one family and one adults-only) as well as a splash area for younger children. The Ritz kids’ club offers a program called Nature’s Wonders for ages 5-12 that includes touch tanks and 11 aquariums. This environmentally focused program promotes the education and preservation of the animals found in Florida’s marine ecosystem. In addition, there is a dedicated gaming lounge for kids that includes gaming consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Wii. For parents, there is a spa area, tennis courts, and access to the greens at the neighboring Ritz Carlton Golf Resort three miles away. Guests can shuttle back and forth between the two Ritz Carlton resorts to enjoy the amenities found at each property. Rates at the Ritz Carlton Beach start at about $550 a night, while the Ritz Carlton Golf starts at around $300 a night. The Golf Resort does offer day passes for $30 a person. There are many dining and shopping options found on-site as well, so your family doesn’t need to leave until it’s time to check out. Continued on page 18

Naples Grande Beach Resort Another nearby option for a luxury family staycation is the Naples Grande Beach Resort. Kids will love the zero-entry pool and waterslide, and the resort also offers a lap pool. There is a third pool reserved for adults, as well as a hot tub and spa. The beach is a quick tram ride away or families can opt for a 15-minute boardwalk stroll. Lounge chairs and umbrellas are set up for guests for a nominal fee. Golf and tennis also are available, as are bookable tours and experiences such as airboat rides, parasailing, seaplane adventures, and water sports rentals. Rates begin close to $275 a night; however, there are numerous Florida resident and family package discounts available online.

ESTATE PLANNING

I

By Norell Albanis

5 Things to Do Before You Take Off for Summer Vacation

t’s no surprise that Americans spend more time planning their summer vacations than they do planning their estate. After all, a vacation is a trip you want to go on, while the eternal “trip” is not. However, wouldn’t you travel with more peace of mind if you knew you had taken the steps necessary to protect your family if something unthinkable should happen to you? Before you leave, you need to tackle these important steps: 1. Guardians for minor children. If you have children under the age of 18, you must name a guardian or guardians to ensure that they never will be left in the hands of strangers or people you wouldn’t want raising them. You can name short-term guardians in case of emergency, and then plan for long-term guardianship. If you are planning a romantic getaway without your children, you should prepare a minor’s power of attorney and healthcare surrogate for their caregivers. Or maybe one of your kids has been invited by a friend to go on vacation with their family. If your child will be away without you, you will want to provide these documents to the friend’s parents as well. 2. Beneficiary review. If it’s been a while since you updated your beneficiary forms for retirement accounts, life insurance, or other assets, it’s time for a review,

especially if there has been a major change in your life. Make sure insurance and retirement accounts are never passed on to your minor children outside of a trust.

It’s no surprise that Americans spend more time planning summer vacations than planning their estates. 3. Estate plan review. If you have experienced a birth, death, marriage, divorce, or other life-changing event since you last updated your estate plan, you need to be sure those changes are reflected in your plan. 4. Create power of attorney documents. Unforeseen illness and injury can leave you incapacitated and unable to make critical decisions about your own wellbeing. Given this, you must grant someone the legal authority to make those decisions

on your behalf through power of attorney. You need two such documents: medical power of attorney and financial durable power of attorney. Medical power of attorney gives the person of your choice the authority to make your healthcare decisions for you, while durable financial power of attorney gives someone the authority to manage your finances. As with beneficiary designations, these decision makers can change over time, so before you leave for vacation, be sure both documents are up to date. 5. Insurance update. Is your life insurance still sufficient to meet the needs of your family? If not, then you should revise your policy before you go. If you haven’t done any of these things, it’s time to take care of business. And if it’s too late to get it all done in time for this vacation, then take the time to get it done before your next trip. MOMentum Moms I had the opportunity to learn more about Carla’s story of immigrating to America as well as her perspective on the current political climate in Venezuela. I also gained an intimate understanding of what she brings to her clients. Carla came to my home and entered into my closet madness, deftly throwing around pieces, praising my taste for high-quality items, yet challenging me to opt for smaller clothing. Oversized shirts, dresses, and bottoms make hourglass women like me look bigger as they disguise curves – my distorted view of myself revealed itself almost immediately during what Why Style markets as a “closet clean out.” Our interview turned into a therapy session that ended with empowering words of encouragement.

native of Venezuela, Carla Delgado Grippa is a single mom with two sons and impeccable style. Her breezy, natural, flawless sensibility has propelled her onto the Neapolitan fashion scene in the short time since she’s been a part of Why Style, a local fashion company. Carla and Why Style founder Sarah Lamont style men and women of all shapes and sizes, putting together interesting and appropriate looks for a variety of occasions. Additionally, they style and direct business and publication photo shoots. 20

What was it like growing up in Venezuela? Caracas was a relatively dangerous place while I was growing up. I couldn’t ride my bike to school, and there was hunger. But there was still possibility and opportunity. My whole family was there, my friends were there, and it was what I knew. What is life like currently in Venezuela? My parents and my brother still live there, and I am scared [for them] every day. I try not to be consumed by it. All the bad things that happened during my childhood are still happening, but on a greater, magnified scale: violence by way of hunger and skewed ways of justifying behavior. People are so hungry and behaviors are so violent. Sacred places have stayed sacred, and there’s a magic in Venezuela in spite of hunger and violence. We can always find the silver lining in everything, and we can always laugh. The Venezuelan people – my parents included – get used to the fear, the misery, and the propaganda in the government, and then it continues to get worse. I want my fellow Americans to know that what is going on in Venezuela is not socialism – it is tyranny. Infrastructure continues to disintegrate, and the economic collapse has choked everyone out of possibilities. People are dying of hunger, there is no income, and the worst is happening. We’re beyond the political conversation now. It’s a humanitarian crisis. Twenty-five million people are at risk of dying of hunger. Tell us the story of why and how you came to America. In 1998, Hugo Chavez took the presidency. Before that, he had tried to kill the current president and assume power. He got caught. Another president came, and that president pardoned Chavez. He became a kind of martyr, proclaiming his representation of the people. At the end of 1999, Chavez called a referendum to amend the constitution giving him complete control to continue amending the constitution. On the day before the election, there was a massive tragedy – a mudslide during which 100,000 people were buried. Nobody cared about the elections, but Chavez didn’t call them off. He amended the constitution, and it was the beginning of the end. He could continue to amend the constitution, and nobody stopped him. So, in 2000, I moved to the United States on a student visa to attend Georgia State’s graduate school. When I graduated in 2002, NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2019

I got a great job working for CNN, and then Disney, and was able to stay in the United States. Tell us about your family. I married Keith in 2004. I got my green card after three years of marriage. We moved to Naples in 2006. My son, Liam, is 13, and Lucas is 11. Though Keith and I divorced when our boys were younger, we have a great relationship and co-parent successfully. There’s no motherhood manual, but from the time I can remember, I have always wanted to be a mom. None of the frustrations that accompany motherhood have been wasted time. And, I’m so grateful to be Liam and Lucas’ mom! How did your passion for clothing and fashion develop? My grandmother was a seamstress, and we spent a lot of time sewing together and creating pieces. We bought fashion magazines as often as they came out, and my grandfather had a store that sold fabric, notions, and everything you needed to make clothing. That was our pastime. We made Versace and Chanel replicas, and they were pretty accurate. It was so much fun to try to get as close as we could. I love getting dressed. It comes naturally, and I love to feel put together. I don’t have every aspect of my life under control. Clothes make sense to me, because it is an area of my life that only impacts me. I’m not going to ruin anyone’s day by my outfit. Tell us about Why Style. What is your role? I joined Why Style in September 2017. Sarah Lamont started Why Style in 2015 as a personal stylist. At first I was going to partner as another stylist under the Why Style umbrella, but we back-tracked that decision, and I started to pour into growing the business from another angle. I beefed up our Instagram and our website and began a film and photo-shoot division. I style magazine cover shoots, fashion spreads, and commercial shoots for advertising agencies and private photographers. Essentially, I put together a message through the clothing. What did it mean to you to start something new in 2017? I’ve gone through many restarts. After my divorce from my second husband, I went through a full reset. From the outside looking in, I restarted my life when I joined Sarah and Why Style. But in reality, it was a lot more than that; Why Style was a source of healing and salvation. I needed to produce things; I needed to show up for something else besides sadness. I had so much determination because I was in the dumpster. I needed to get up, chop wood, and carry water – so to speak. I can’t imagine not having this business. I loved and cherished everything about being a stay-at-home mom. But, as

my sons have grown older, I started thinking: ‘Where is my brain, and what can I do with my life?’ My boys are not my end all, be all. I think I can have a better relationship with them because of that. Do you ever feel like a therapist when you’re working with clients? I know the potential of selecting clothing is nerve-wracking. We all have aspects of our lives that we’re confident in, and others that we’re really insecure about. Shopping is not a joyful experience for most women – I realized that working at Nordstrom. In working with clients, I realized that my time with them wasn’t about making the sale. It became about providing confidence. We all look different, but we all have the same struggle. At the end of the day, what Sarah and I do goes beyond buying clothes. It goes beyond getting people on trend. Our goal is to work ourselves out of a job by providing people with the confidence to make clothing decisions on their own. What do you love about being a mom in this new season of your life? My inspiration is my kids. They inspire me to find ways to regenerate myself. If they hadn’t have come into my life, I wouldn’t be where I am now.

TRAVEL

By Karen T. Bartlett

Destination: Parks, Patriots, & Pierogi Photo by Sara Mantich

s there anything more patriotic than a generous helping of musket fire, a Fourth of July parade, and a visit to a national park, possibly with a moose or kangaroo rat sighting thrown in? Of course not! So with this in mind, here are some super cool considerations for your travels this summer. Sand dunes but no sea turtles Those dramatic snow-white dunes at White Sands National Monument near Las Cruces, New Mexico, aren’t sand at all. They actually make up the world’s largest gypsum dune field, dating back to the Ice Age. Look for roadrunners, coyotes, jackrabbits, foxes, and (my fave) Dipodomys merriami, also known as Merriam’s kangaroo rat. If you see one, try not to frighten the little guy. When startled, it can jump up to 10 feet in the air! Indiana Dunes is America’s newest national park, just upgraded in February from Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Gorgeous 200-foot sand dunes (of actual sand) stretch for 25 miles along Lake Michigan’s South Shore, about 50 miles from Chicago. Adjoining the lake are stunning prairies, pine forests, oak savannahs, and more than 2,000 species of wildlife. nps.gov Attention sports fans: check out the brand new Mascot Hall of Fame in Whiting, Indiana, about halfway between Indiana Dunes and Chicago. Among the mascots you’ll meet are Slider

(Cleveland Indians) and Mr. Met (New York Mets). mascothalloffame.com Oh, and who could pass up joining about 250,000 others for Whiting’s annual Pierogi Fest, July 26-28? A pierogi is a yummy Slavic potato dumpling, and the locals celebrate it with a pierogi toss, a pierogi-eating contest, and also a weird parade that includes women wearing housecoats and a lawnmower brigade. pierogifest.net Lady Liberty’s torch & toes Wait till you see what’s new on Liberty Island! The Statue of Liberty’s original torch and full-size replicas of Lady Liberty’s face and left foot are among the highlights of the brand new interactive Statue of Liberty Museum, just opened this spring. Tell the kids – it’s perfectly okay to get a selfie while seated on her toes. If you want access to the lady herself, including the actual crown and pedestal, get your tickets ASAP! Liberty Island (home of the Statue of Liberty and the new museum) and Ellis Island (home of the National Museum of Immigration, the American Family Immigration History Center, and more) are accessible only by ferry. Traveler alert: stick to the official ticket site, statuecruises.com. Boston Tea Party The four-day Boston Harborfest, one of the country’s largest Fourth of July festivals, features more than 200 family-friendly events (many are free) including reenactments such as the Redcoats Changing of the Guard, performances, strolling musicians, Boston Harbor tours, and, of course, the very tasty Chowderfest! bostonharborfest.com Just 30 minutes away is the Minute Man National Historical Park in Concord, Massachusetts, site of the opening battle of the American Revolution. All summer long there are living history tours and musket firings. On July 4th visitors can witness the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. nps.gov Cannon blasts and plenty of fudge Fort Mackinac, the site of two years of battles in the War of 1812, is on super-charming Mackinac Island (pronounced Mackin-awe). Except for the fort’s seriously impressive reenactments involving cannon blasts and soldiers all over the place, the island is a throwback to a bygone era with gardens spilling over with lilacs, the fragrance of fudge, gracious inns, and the clip clop of horse-drawn carriages (no cars!). On July 4th there are fireworks and a world-famous stone-skipping tournament. If you plan to enter (there’s a category for kids 12 and under), I suggest you start practicing with this inside tip from Kurt Steiner, the Guinness World Record stone skipper: “pick a very smooth flat-bottom stone, between 1/4” and 5/16 ” thick, weighing 3 to 8 ounces.” Mackinac Island’s many fudge shops offer free samples, so the locals call us tourists Fudgies. I don’t care, do you? Fudgie alert: this year’s Mackinac Island Fudge Festival is August 23-25. mackinacisland.org Giant forest I’m not a fan of General William Tecumseh Sherman (he torched some perfectly lovely towns), but the General Sherman Tree is a whole ’nother thing. The 2,500 year-old giant sequoia NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2019

tree in California’s Sequoia National Park is reportedly the largest living single stem tree on earth, and it doesn’t stand alone, so to speak. The General’s neighbors in the Giant Forest include five of the world’s 10 largest trees. Consider going during the sixth annual Dark Sky Festival in Sequoia and King’s Canyon National Parks, August 23-25. Otherwise, weekdays get the smallest crowds. visitsequoia.com No mooses, no meese …But there are plenty of moose (yep, that’s the plural), plus beavers and foxes in Isle Royale National Park, Michigan. Want to skip fireworks this year and share a remote wilderness with about 1,500 of those majestic creatures? As a special bonus, Isle Royale, the largest island in Lake Superior, is a National Park Service wolf restoration location. The wolf pack is still small, though, so sightings are rare. Accessible by boat or seaplane from the town of Houghton, Isle Royale is a dream destination for hiking, camping, canoeing, and kayaking, and even shipwreck diving. Check out the excellent wilderness ranger programs for kids. nps.gov 234th annual Fourth of July parade No town has a more legitimate claim to the title Most Patriotic Town in America than Bristol, Rhode Island, about 20 miles from Providence. Cases in point: its July 4th parade, started in 1785, is three hours long; the centerline of the main route is painted red, white, and blue; the town is draped in more bunting and flags than anyplace else on earth; and there are enough soldiers, muskets, drums, and bugles to satisfy even the most avid parade freak. Stake your spot early; you’ll be sharing the moment with 200,000 or so of your closest patriots. explorebristolri.com Free days! Are you a fourth grader (going into fifth grade this September), or related to one? You and your family get in free at all U.S. national parks, preserves, and lands through the Every Kid in a Park program. Modern Day Manners:

Party Tips for Hosts & Guests

W

hen your children use good manners, other people want to be around them. That’s why birthday parties are opportune events to teach children not only party etiquette, but a graciousness that goes beyond rules. Whether your child is the host or the guest, make teaching children party etiquette fun. Stage a mock birthday party so that your child can role play some of these helpful hints. Be discreet For hosts: If possible, you might consider inviting the entire team or class. However, that doesn’t always work out, so in that case, snail mail or e-mail invites, and teach your child not to talk about his party in front of children who aren’t invited. However, be realistic. It’s hard to keep a preschooler or kindergartner from talking about her party. If you start having discussions about being discreet when children are young, they will handle the situation appropriately when they are older. For guests: It is disappointing when your child is not invited to a party, but disappointment provides an opportunity to coach your child through early letdowns in life. Explain that he may be invited to the next party when someone else is not. If your child does receive an invitation, teach her to treat the matter with the same delicacy she did as the host. Be clear with boundaries For hosts: Human beings need boundaries. When we have them we feel more comfortable about the setting that we are in, so be clear about party guidelines in the invitation. Give a time, date, and place, and let parents know if the party is a drop-off party or if they should stay. Let them know if adults will be eating too. Sometimes parents are invited to have the main course (for

example pizza) and the sweet treat. Sometimes they are just invited to have cake. You also may want to add a note about whether siblings may attend. Be clear about what events are happening when so the party unfolds in an orderly manner. If gifts are opened at the party, usher them away quickly so that toys and projects that were given as gifts don’t interrupt party activities. For guests: If it is an at-home party, stay in the areas the host is in. Don’t go into other rooms without permission, and if a restroom is needed, ask which one is for guests. If the party is at an off-site venue, have your child follow all of the rules of the establishment. If the host doesn’t specify guidelines about the party in the invitation, never assume. For instance, don’t eat the food or cake, or bring your entire family (or even extra siblings) if you haven’t asked the host. Be social For hosts: Meet and greet each child as they arrive. Have the birthday host play with everyone so no one feels left out. Make an effort to include everyone and give everyone a chance at each game. Say goodbye and thank guests for coming when the party is over. For guests: Let the host know that you are there. Make an effort to play with the host and other guests and not form cliques that exclude other party guests. When you are ready to leave, be sure to tell the host goodbye. Be giving For hosts: Teach your child not to expect to receive gifts, but if she does, compliment each guest and stay positive about every item, even if it is something that your child already has or

is something he doesn’t like. If you have decided to forgo gifts, write “No gifts, please” on the invitation or “Only the favor of your company is requested.” Favor bags aren’t necessary, and some parents may prefer that their children not receive sugary candy and small plastic items. Instead, your child could pick out a memorable item to pass out to each guest who attends. For example, if it is close to Christmas, your child could give everyone an inexpensive ornament, or if it is a spring party, give packets of flower seeds. A special memento is nice – my daughter’s favorite favor was a peacock feather she received at a kindergarten party. For guests: Unless the invitation includes the message “No gifts please,” bring a gift. It doesn’t have to be expensive and can be handmade. Giving of your time is thoughtful and many parents will be grateful for this in place of another toy that has to be picked up. Consider making a card to add to the gift with a heartfelt message written by your child. Be courteous For hosts: Thank each and every guest for coming and for bringing a gift, no matter how big or small. The guest (and sometimes a parent!) has taken time out of an evening or weekend to attend a birthday party. Have your child write a thank you note to send to the guest after the party. Use the same discretion when passing out thank you notes as you did with invitations. For guests: Remember to RSVP. Be on time, but if you find

Teach Lifelong Graciousness By Encouraging Thank You Notes

T

eaching kids to express gratitude doesn’t have to end in tears or tantrums, if you approach the task with an upbeat, playful attitude yourself. Teach your kids to think of gratitude as “thank you time,” instead of attaching too much anxiety to the task of writing a note. Using a simple, relaxed approach, you can teach your kids valuable lessons about appreciation that will last a lifetime. Somebody loves you. Start by reminding your child that needing to write a thank you note is wonderful in the first place because it means someone loves you enough to give you a gift. Who wouldn’t want to say thank you when you put it like that? Let preschoolers scribble. Use blank cards and envelopes to get very young children involved in the thank you note process. Explain what you are creating in a cheery tone, and you will set a great precedent for fun, colorful thank you notes down the road. Forget time pressure. Chillax. Writing thank you notes is not a race or a competition. The more pressure you apply to grateful actions, the more angst you instill in the task. Just because your mother insisted you write your notes within 24 hours doesn’t mean that’s the only way. Let the kids write the thank you notes when you can find some thoughtful down time to do the job well, rather than feeling rushed. Keep a gift list. This is key at a busy party or event. Keep a clipboard handy where you mark down whom to thank and why. If someone gives a gift, describe the gift with a few details. But don’t stop there. If someone does a good deed, jot down a few words about the person and the deed. This clipboard becomes your go-to source for a regular thank you note practice. Keep cards at the ready. Purchase a greeting-card sorter so you can keep track 42

neafamily.com

of all types of cards, including blank cards and homemade cards. Let kids choose the card design they prefer or let them create their own. Have special thank you tools. Create a thank you note kit with special supplies just for thank you note writing to make the process more fun. Here’s what to put in yours: • Pens or markers – think glitter or calligraphy, • Stickers or even envelope sealing wax, • Special thank you note stamps. Provide writing templates. Neatly handwrite or type age-appropriate templates for your child to follow when writing thank you notes until your child learns what is typically is included by heart. Be sure to include: • A greeting • A thank you for the gift or gesture • What the recipient likes most • Hopes of seeing the giver soon • “Thanks again” • An upbeat closing.

Also provide address templates. Very young children will need to have their thank you notes addressed for them. Once kids are old enough to write, create an address template for them to follow, including the return address, address, and where the stamp goes. Teach them to write “Please do not bend” on the envelope and to use extra postage when sending photos. Encourage self-expression. Teach your children that thank you notes are a form of self-expression. Add drawings of the gift or gifts, photos of the opening of the gift, photos of the gift in action, photos of your child with the gift-giver, or a drawing of the child with the gift-giver. See what ideas your children can come up with and let them use their unique talents and work with what you have on hand. 2-4-6-8, look for folks to appreciate! Don’t merely write thank you notes for gifts. If someone’s good deed impacts your child, ask if that person should go on the gratitude list. In this way, note writing becomes a celebratory habit, not merely a task to dread after receiving gifts. NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2019

Save on Birthday Party Gifts by Creating a Birthday Box

W

hen you have young children, attending birthday parties can become a weekly event. In the preschool and elementary age set, kids tend to invite their whole class to their parties, which can mean more presents to buy. This can quickly add up, so what’s a thrifty parent to do? My solution is to create a “birthday box.” A birthday box is a stash of age-appropriate gifts stored in the house for just these occasions. When it’s time for the next party, your child goes “shopping” in the box. This will save you money, because you will stock up on items found on sale. Having a gift stash also will save you time and stress because you won’t have to stand in the aisle of the toy store trying in vain to explain to your child why you can’t afford the $100 LEGO set or latest skateboard for his preschool buddy! The key to stocking your gift box is not only to choose items that are on deep discount but also to stay away from fads, current trends, and time-sensitive items like calendars. Choose timeless gifts such as craft kits, art supplies, games, puzzles, and educational toys. That way, whether you have an opportunity to give the present tomorrow or six months from now, the gift will be appreciated. Now that you have a general idea, here are suggestions for where and when to find those bargains. Let’s go shopping! Where to shop Warehouse stores. I’ve found great gifts at Costco, such as mega-packs of colored markers, Play-Doh, and multi packs of books. Sometimes I even break up sets and mix and match items to make gift sets. Craft stores. Craft stores such as Hobby Lobby, JOANN, and Michaels often stock a selection of craft kits at slashed prices. Drug stores. Most drug stores have a toy aisle, and sometimes you will find smaller gifts at discounted prices. Even if it is a smaller item than you would feel comfortable giving, if the price is low, pick up a few because you can later package several smaller gifts together as one present. These also are great items to tie onto a package along with a ribbon to elevate the gift. I once found these super-cute clear bath soaps with a goldfish toy embedded inside the soap. I bought several and tied them onto wrapped birthday packages. They were a huge hit, and cost me less than $1 each. Big box and discount stores. Walmart and Target often have items on clearance prices. Always check the clearance and sales aisles to find a potential gift. And your local dollar store can be a treasure trove for a bargain seeker! If you like using gift bags, purchasing these at the dollar store will cut way down on your wrapping costs. Online. When stocking up, check online stores, such as Mindware (Mindware.com) and Learning Resources (learningresources.

NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2019

com). Both carry educational and unusual toys and games. Because these items are less common, you have less chance of giving a duplicate gift. Once on the sites above, check the “Sale” or “Clearance” section. The toy company Melissa and Doug offer quality products that are usually completely out of my price range, but I’ve found some gems in the clearance section at www.melissaanddoug.com. Book fairs. If you have an elementary school-age child, you probably will go to at least one book fair per year. The Scholastic company offers fun kits and books paired with toys at these fairs, often for reasonable prices. At many schools, if you volunteer at the book fair, you can get an additional discount. In addition, librarians, school employees, volunteers, and home school teachers also may shop at Scholastic’s warehouse sales. End-of season sales. Don’t forget to check the clearance aisles at your favorite stores at the end of each season. For example, at the end of summer, stock up on water toys, sand toys, and bubble mix. The key to saving money is to keep your eyes open for deals every time you are out shopping. Keeping your gift box stocked will save you both money and stress over time. However, make sure you hide the box from your own kiddos, or they might go shopping for themselves! TIFFANY DOERR GUERZON is a freelance writer and thrifty mother of three children. Have a Happy Birthday (Without the Party)

T

Budget friendly birthday ideas that make your child feel special

he day your children were born is a day to celebrate and make them feel special. Birthday parties are fun, but they can be a lot of work, and the costs can add up quickly. If you decide to skip the party, you can still celebrate big. Here are some ideas to make sure your child’s birthday is special. Create anticipation As the birthday approaches, build anticipation by talking about it and planning what the day will hold. You can create a special countdown by making a paper chain and tearing off one chain per day or even just counting down the number of days on a chalkboard in your home. Explain that although there will not be a big birthday party this year, there still will be a lot of fun things planned. Make the cake A great way to save money on a birthday celebration is to make the cake yourself. Choose flavors and colors or themes your child loves and get siblings involved in the preparation. Kids typically don’t care about whether the cake is perfectly decorated – they are happy with a cake that is made just for them.

Create a balloon avalanche When your child goes to sleep the night before their birthday, decorate the house with balloons or birthday decor. Try taping a disposable tablecloth to the outside of the door jam and fill the space between with balloons. When your child opens the door, she will be greeted with a balloon avalanche that is sure to put a big smile on her face. Make it kid’s choice When you are planning the day, consider your child’s favorites. Plan the day’s meals around your child’s favorite foods. Choose things that you typically do not serve to make the day more special. If you will go on an outing or if you will be dining out, let the child choose the location. Document the day Create a list of questions to ask your child on his birthday, such as “Who is your best friend?” or list TV shows, songs, foods, etc. Record the answers in a safe place and repeat each year. It’s fun to look back and see how your child has changed and matured over the years.

Tell their story Kids love to hear stories about the day they were born, the cute things they did as a baby, or how you prepared for their arrival. Spend part of the day telling favorite stories about your child – she is sure to love it. Have others reach out Ask friends and family to wish your child a happy birthday with calls, texts, messages, or cards. Consider talking to family members via FaceTime or Skype. This will help your child know that others are

celebrating him even if you aren’t hosting a big birthday party this year. As parents, we often feel like we have to spend a lot to make our child’s birthday special when this is truly not the case. With a little extra planning, your child’s day can be just as special as any expensive party. SARAH LYONS is a stay-at-home mom to six children. Some years her kids celebrate their birthday with a party and other years they choose to celebrate in other ways.
