from the publisher… This Month: Happy Father’s Day

I love a good birthday party! When my daughter was younger, I would come up with a new idea for each year’s celebration. I enjoyed the planning and preparation. The best part, of course, was watching the children have so much fun. I was planning parties before the days of Pinterest (and the internet, yes, I’m that old!) so it took a bit more work to be creative. Now, you enter your theme into the Pinterest search engine and, like magic, tons of ideas. If you don’t know what to search for, we’re here to help! Start on pages 44-47 with our birthday theme guide. We found 12 creative ideas for every month of the year. Use our tips or plug the theme into Pinterest and see what you come up with. We also found that etsy.com offered a wealth of creative ideas. You’ll find plenty of inexpensive downloadable printables for invitations, food wraps and props as well as cute dress up costumes and birthday boy and girl clothing like t-shirts, crowns and tiaras. I think you’ll also enjoy our reader photos on pages 50-51. We appreciate our Facebook fans getting into the birthday spirit by sending in their photos. Our big news this month is that you can now download our mobile app from the Apple and Google stores. Just search for Go Neapolitan Family (or follow the link on our website). You will be able to use the app daily to find events and coupons plus you’ll find lots of helpful information on services for your entire family. It’s free to download and use. Our other big news is that we have set the date for the 2014 Back to School Expo. We’ll be at North Collier Regional Park on Saturday, August 9. If your business or organization would like a booth, please call 514-0338. There is a $50 discount if you register before July 15. I hope you have a wonderful July!

REEL LIFE WITH JANE

By Jane Louise Boursaw

Family Movie & DVD Reviews N

ew on the big screen in July for kids and teens is a sweet alien tale, a beloved animated plane, and another “Step Up” dance movie. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters and on DVD and blu-ray this month. DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

EARTH TO ECHO PG for some action and peril, and mild language • In Theaters 7/02 Ok for Kids 7+ Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 Reels ET phone home? Maybe. In this family adventure from director Dave Green and Walt Disney Studios, Tuck (Astro), Munch (Reese Hartwig) and Alex (Teo Halm) are inseparable friends whose neighborhood is being destroyed by a highway construction project that’s forcing their families to move away. Just two days before they must part ways, the boys begin receiving a strange series of signals on their phones and team up with another friend, Emma, to figure out what’s going on. Turns out an adorable little alien is stranded on Earth and needs help to–you guessed it–get back home. LIFE ITSELF Not Yet Rated; likely PG-13 In Theaters 7/04 • Ok for Kids 12+ Reel Preview: 5 of 5 Reels Documentarian Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”) is the perfect filmmaker to adapt the memoir of Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic and American icon Roger Ebert. This film is funny and passionate, much like the subject himself, and is both a retrospective of Ebert’s amazing career and an intimate look at the end of his life–a life well lived with wife and soulmate Chaz. The film, produced by Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese, received standing ovations when it played at Sundance.

July 2014.indd 8

Not Yet Rated; likely PG-13 In Theaters 7/11 • Ok for Kids 13+ Reel Preview: 5 of 5 Reels Ten years after the events of 2011’s “Rise of The Planet of the Apes,” the super-smart ape Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his followers come into conflict with the human survivors of a deadly virus. Who will win? Well, let’s just say the title is a dead giveaway. Director Matt Reeves takes over the reins from “Rise” director Rupert Wyatt, with a cast that includes Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Enrique Murciano, Kirk Acevedo, and Judy Greer. This film continues the franchise with impressive special effects and a dark storyline that’s sure to be a hit with moviegoers. JUPITER ASCENDING Not Yet Rated; likely PG-13 In Theaters 7/18 (3D, 2D, IMAX 3D) Ok for Kids 14 Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels In a near-future dystopia, Mila Kunis plays Jupiter Jones, a lowly janitor who might also have a genetic claim on Earth. This doesn’t sit well with the King Of The Universe (Eddie Redmayne), who sends Caine Wise (Channing Tatum) to kill her. Then, of course, things get complicated. Written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski (“Cloud Atlas”), this is an ambitious film with similarities to “The Matrix” universe (a chosen one battles the forces of evil) . PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE Not Yet Rated; likely G In Theaters 7/18 (3D, 2D) Ok for Kids 4+ Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 Reels I’m all for any children’s film where they play a tune by AC/DC in the trailer (“Thunderstruck,” in this case). This sequel to “Planes” (a spinoff of “Cars”) finds Dusty Crophopper (voiced by Dane Cook) now a world famous air racer. But when he learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he shifts gears and joins an elite aerial firefighting unit, including veteran fire and rescue helicopter Blade Ranger, spirited super scooper Dipper, heavy-lift helicopter

Windlifter, ex-military transport Cabbie, and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire and Dusty learns what it takes to become a true hero. Directed by Disney vet Roberts Gannaway (Disney TV’s “House of Mouse” and “Timon & Pumba”), the animation is more sophisticated than “Planes,” and the story more appealing, especially given the raging real-life wildfires out west this year. HERCULES Not Yet Rated; likely PG-13 In Theaters 7/25 • Ok for Kids 13+ Reel Preview: 3 of 5 Reels I do love Dwayne Johnson, but only the box office returns will determine whether he’s the actor to de-slump the Greek myth-inspired movie genre. Directed by Brett Ratner and based on the Radical Studios graphic novel “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” with a screenplay by Ryan Condal and Evan Spiliotopoulos, this ensemble action film is a revisionist take on the classic myth, set in a grounded world where the supernatural does not exist. Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules is a mercenary now who, along with five faithful companions, travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage warlord, Hercules must again become the hero he once was. Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, John Hurt and Rebecca Ferguson also star. STEP UP ALL IN Rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive material In Theaters 7/25 (3D, 2D) NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2014

6/22/14 8:15 PM

Ok for Kids 13+ Reel Preview: 3 of 5 Reels The “Step Up” franchise moves merrily along with its fifth installment of the dance series that began in 2006. People love dance movies, albeit mostly for the dancing, as the plot is generally culled from a couple of basic premises -- the “Big Dance Battle” and the “One Last Show to Save the Dance School/Community Center/ Whatever. Of course, there’s the requisite love story/rivalry thrown in for dramatic tension. It’s directed by Trish Sie, whose experience in choreography, music videos (“Here It Goes Again”), and viral videos makes her a natural fit.

Ok for kids 8+ Reel Review: 3.5 of 5 Reels From the director of “Black Cat” comes this very different type of hunger games. Every day, an epic struggle rages in grocery stores across Japan– the battle for half-priced bento boxes! Once the discount stickers go on, ravenous brawlers start throwing punches in a knockdown, drag-out war over who gets to take home the cheap eats. When a young, broke high school student named Sato joins the Half-Priced Food Lovers Club, he proves to be a rising talent in the world of insane food fights. But does he have what it takes to become the king of anime clearance cuisine?

NEW ON DVD | BLU-RAY: FRANKLIN & FRIENDS: FISHING TRIP

AN AMERICAN GIRL: ISABELLE DANCES INTO THE SPOTLIGHT

Not Rated • On DVD 7/01 Ok for kids 3+ Reel Review: 4 of 5 Reels That gentle turtle Franklin decides to share his fort with Harriet and make some family memories of his own after listening to his Dad and Aunt T share childhood memories on a family camping trip. You can’t go wrong with this sweet tale based on characters from the books by Brenda Clark and Paulette Bourgeois.

Not Rated On DVD/Blu-ray/Digital 7/22 Ok for kids 7+ Reel Review: 3 of 5 Reels Erin Pitt stars as 9-year-old Isabelle, an inspired dancer with a flair for fashion design. She’s thrilled to be studying ballet at a prestigious performing arts school, but her classmates are so talented, and she can’t

BEN TO: COMPLETE SERIES Not Rated • On Blu-ray 7/08

help feeling that she’s always in the shadow of her “perfect” older sister, Jade. Will she find the courage to step into the spotlight? BABAR & THE ADVENTURES OF BADOU: GONE WILD Not Rated • On DVD 7/29 Ok for Kids 3+ Reel Review: 4 of 5 Reels Follow the adventures of Babar’s grandson Badou, as he and his friends and family solve assorted mysteries and puzzles in Celesteville. Badou is a one-elephant stampede, bursting with a sense of adventure and his grandfather s daring spirit, often plunging into a situation (or a hidden passageway or unexplored temple) fully confident that he can handle whatever he finds. Of course, King Babar is never far when his grandson needs guidance. This new series speaks to diversity, tolerance and the importance of a strong family bond. Includes 8 adventurepacked episodes. JANE’S REEL RATING SYSTEM One Reel – Even the Force can’t save it. Two Reels – Coulda been a contender Three Reels – Something to talk about. Four Reels – You want the truth? Great flick! Five Reels – Wow! The stuff dreams are made of.

SUMMER FUN

6 Things to do in Naples

that are really cheap (or FREE!) 1.

GET SCIENTIFIC AT THE LIBRARY Collier County Public Libraries offer a wealth of fun activities during the summer months. Children, teens and adults can choose from a variety of programming including reading clubs, movies, arts & crafts activities and special events. Of special interest in July is The MOSI in Motion: Mobile Science Lab. MOSI was created by the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) located in Tampa, Florida, and allows children to participate in a “field trip” by bringing the MOSI experience to them. Children can step inside the MOSI in Motion: Mobile Science Lab and be immersed in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) as they engage in innovative, exciting hands-on science experiments, demonstrations and simulations with a MOSI educator. The program begins Monday, July 14 and runs through July 18. Space is limited so sign up early. Get more information about MOSI in Motion and other CCPS programs also register for most library programs on the site.

2.

Walk on a Boardwalk. New Jersey has nothing on Florida when it comes to boardwalks. There are several boardwalks in Naples that offer your family the opportunity to exercise, check out nature and spend some quality family time. Don’t let the heat deter you! Grab a bottle of water, some sunscreen and bug spray and hit the boardwalk. 12

SUMMER FUN

By GAYLA GRACE

Boredom Busters for Hot Days Twelve Simple Ideas for Indoor Fun “It’s too hot out there,” my son complained as he shuffled into the house. His red face and sweat-drenched hair told the story. It was time to play in the house. As summer drags on, hot days push kids inside. But long summer days can send even the most patient mom to her last nerve. When emotions start heating up, it’s time for fresh ideas that can turn a long day into a fun day. Create a Nerf gun shooting target. Take a sleeve of plastic cups and help your kids stack them upside down in a triangular fashion. Add some action figures on the cups on the ends. Let the kids take turns at target practice, gaining points for shooting action figures. If you don’t have a Nerf gun, use a small soft ball. Sculpt with aluminum foil. Ask each child to make five animals with aluminum foil and let others guess them. Have a small prize on hand to give to the child who creates the best-guessed animals. Pore over an “I Spy” book. Go to the nearest library and check out every “I Spy” book you find. Kids can spend hours hunting for carefullyhidden objects on each page, competing with one another on who can find the most objects the fastest.

Finger paint the tub. A great way to extend bath time! Drop blobs of finger paint on the sides of the tub and ask the kids to paint the sides. It’s easy clean up when the fun is over as the paint washes down the drain! Create a movie marathon with old movies of your kids. Dig out the movies of years’ gone by. Pop popcorn, make coke floats, and create loads of fun while the kids laugh at themselves and their siblings from younger years. Skype with Grandma. Grandparents love to see the smiling faces of their grandkids and hear about what’s happening in their lives. All you need is a personal computer with an internet connection and a built-in or clip-on camera. Download the Skype application for free and connect with any other Skype user. Help your kids color a special picture or work a hard puzzle and then let them brag about it to Grandma. Break out the Hula Hoop. Tell your kids that the current world record for continuous hula hooping is 90 hours. Once they give up on that idea, use the hoop to make a reading fort. All you have to do is sew or pin a sheet to the hoop and then use strong fishing line to attach it to a high ceiling or a beam on the lanai. Toss a pillow and a blanket inside and you have an individual reading nook. See neafamily.com for complete instructions on the assembly of the nook. Build a fort and go camping...indoors. Our kids have spent hours playing in homemade, indoor forts. Let your kids move the chairs from your dining table to an out-of-the way room and drape sheets and blankets over the chairs, securing them with clothespins or rubber bands. If you have a cat and a dog, hide treats for both and see which one wins. Throw a dance party. Kids have pent up energy on hot days that needs to be released. Blare the stereo and dance around the house. Let the kids pick their favorite songs so they’ll be sure to participate. Teach the kids how play traditional card games. Play a couple of hands of Crazy Eights, Go Fish, Concentration, Slapjack or Spoons. Or, toss a few decks of cards into apile and let the kids build a house of cards. Ask your kids to help make homemade playdough. Use peanut butter and honey so they can eat while they mold! By HEIDI SMITH LUEDTKE

How to Handle Outdoor Emergencies

H

ot, sunny days are best spent outdoors. Take the kids swimming at the beach or neighborhood pool. Hike on one of the local boardwalks. Pack a picnic. Take a laidback approach. But not when it comes to safety. Emergencies strike without warning. When they do, a swift, smart response is critical. Here’s how to stay safe. Heat

Prolonged exposure to heat can cause a potentially-fatal heat stroke. Symptoms include nausea, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and difficulty breathing. Infants and athletes are especially susceptible. Dehydration increases risk, because the body can’t cool itself through perspiration. Body temperature can reach 106 degrees. Dr. Michael Zimring, Director of the Center for Wilderness and Travel Medicine LLC at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD, says it’s best to stay out of the mid-day sun. Keep hydrated and avoid caffeine, which is a natural diuretic. In an overheating emergency, get the victim into an air-conditioned building or find shade fast. Call 911. Put on a wet shirt to speed cooling. Apply ice packs

18

neafamily.com

July 2014.indd 18

to the armpits or groin. Monitor body temperature until help arrives.

lightniNg According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), lightning causes 200 deaths and 750 severe injuries each year. Most victims are children and young men. Lightning can strike even when it isn’t raining, and up to 10 miles away from a storm. Contrary to popular belief, lightning often hits the same site repeatedly. Take weather alerts seriously. When a storm is brewing, go inside or get in the car. Rubber tires will not protect you, but you’re safer inside a metal-roofed vehicle than outside. Stay away from trees, fences, electric and light poles and water. If lightning hits someone, call 911. Move the victim if possible. Wait until 30 minutes after lighting ends to go back outside.

PESTS AND PLANTS People who are allergic to insect stings can have life-threatening reactions. The area around the bite may swell and – in rare cases of anaphylaxis – the person may have difficulty breathing, dizziness, hives, swelling of the face, throat, or mouth, or a sharp drop in blood pressure. Pollen-related allergic reactions are usually easier to predict, but allergy-induced asthma can be deadly. Avoid triggers. Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. Hike in the middle of the trail where you’re less likely to disturb pests in their

nests or touch poison ivy. Use insect repellant with DEET, says Zimring. Severely allergic individuals should also carry an epi-pen, he says, and make sure you know how to use it.

WATER Drowning causes 30% of injury-related deaths in young children, according to Centers for Disease Control data. Most incidents happen in residential pools, but buckets and bathtubs are dangerous, too. Boating emergencies also peak in summer months. Alcohol use and inadequate supervision increase risk. Supervise kids near water and use approved life preservers: water wings and blowup toys are not enough. Wear life preservers consistently. Safety equipment can’t protect you if you don’t use it. If you’re boating, stay sober. And head to shore before dark to avoid hitting hazards. In a drowning emergency, get the person out quickly. Check for breathing. Use rescue breathing and CPR if needed. If vomiting occurs, turn the victim on their side to prevent choking. Don’t let the long, lazy days of summer make you vulnerable to outdoor emergencies. Plan ahead. Take precautions. Play safe. And be ready to respond if danger develops. A cool head is the best resource in any crisis. By ALEXA BIGWARFE

Stuck in the Middle 7 Ways for Moms in the Sandwich Generation to Reduce Stress of Caregiving

M

others in the “sandwich generation” (between the ages of 35 and 54 who are simultaneously caring for children and aging parents,) feel more stress than any other age group, according to the American Psychological Association. This stress impacts all aspects of their lives – relationships with their spouse and children, emotional well-being, and their health.

Caring for children is stressful on its own, but caring for a parent at the same time can cause caregivers to become overly stressed and even depressed. The stress of dual caregiving is caused by numerous factors: increased financial burden, feeling as though they are torn between caring for their children and their parent, and managing all the extra duties that come along with caring for a parent. Mothers who are “sandwiched” between parents and children often take on the bulk of the caregiving responsibilities. A 2008 study of social workers reported that the majority of mothers in the sandwich generation are not prepared for all of the responsibilities that accompany caring for children and an elderly family member simultaneously. Additionally, many of those mothers were also unaware of the resources that are available to help them with their daily caregiving roles. You are not alone if you’ve found yourself exhausted from being “sandwiched.” Here are some ways to help you reduce the stress associated with the demands of being a caregiver.

1.

Breathe. Take time to relax and take a step back. If you have to, schedule daily and weekly down time. Determine what priorities really need to be handled, and let some of the other stuff go.

20

neafamily.com

July 2014.indd 20

NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2014

6/22/14 8:22 PM

2. 3.

Get physical. A regular exercise routine can really help reduce stress.

Say “yes” to help, and don’t forget to ask for it! If you have siblings, be sure to include them and have them help. You can also reach out to church members, friends, and social workers.

4.

Develop a care plan. Include your parent or elderly family member and ensure you understand their care goals and priorities. Also involve the children in the planning process and allow their input, particularly if they will be sacrificing time, activities, and space due to your caregiving responsibilities.

5.

Identify outside resources to help. Check www.collierseniorresources. org for information on local caregiving services. Outside resources can really help alleviate stress.

6.

If resources allow, consider retaining an elder care attorney. These attorneys are very familiar with the laws, rights, benefits, and all things related to protecting the elderly. They can

be a tremendous support and wealth of information and also very useful in helping to prepare for end of life care and considerations.

7.

Guard your relationships with your spouse and children. This is important. Family relationships can really suffer when children and spouses feel they are being ignored. Moms can also become overwhelmed with guilt from being torn away from their family in order to care for their parents. Be sure to make special time for your family and schedule periodic date nights with your spouse. The sandwich generation phenomenon is not likely to end any time soon, especially since many children are living with their parents longer, women are waiting until later in life to have children, and life expectancies are longer. It is important for moms in this role to know how to get help and how to cope before becoming overwhelmed.

Resources for Caregivers July is “Sandwich Generation Month.” Hospitals, advocacy groups, and other organizations can download free Planner’s Toolkits at the website www. sandwichgenerationmonth.com/ to aid in their preparation for celebrating Sandwich Generation Month. These events not only honor and celebrate the dedication of caregivers, but also raise awareness and support for the sandwich generation caregivers. www.collierseniorresources.org Provides comprehensive information regarding services and resources that affect the quality of life of older adults and their caregivers in Collier County, empowering them to maintain independent and meaningful lives. www.seniorsresourceguide.com

T

he Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre presents two popular produtions this summer: The Little Mermaid will be playing select matinees in July and early August. Bring the whole family and join the cast in this fun-filled, underwater adventure. This is the classic story of a young mermaid who dreams of living above the sea. She takes many trips to the surface and falls in love with a handsome prince. The mermaid strikes a deal with a wicked sea witch and exchanges her voice for the chance to live as a human. Broadway Palm Children’s Theatre presents full-scale productions that are great for all ages. All performances begin with a buffet at noon and show time at 1:00 pm. The chef’s special buffet includes children’s favorites like chicken, french fries, pasta and more. Ticket prices for the buffet and the show are only $18 for all ages. Group rates are available for parties of 20 or more. The magnificent musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is playing at Broadway Palm June 26 through August 16. The age-old Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to life on stage as a fun-filled, colorful musical that is great entertainment for all ages. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is one of the most spectacular and entertaining musicals to ever hit the stage. Andrew Lloyd Webber teams up with collaborator Tim Rice to tell this compelling story from the Old Testament. Performances are Wednesday through Sunday evenings with selected matinees. Ticket prices range from $35 to $58 and are now on sale. There is a summer special and tickets for children 18 and under are just $18 for dinner and the show. ecently, more than 300 members and staff from the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County joined together and packaged more than 60,000 meals for Meals of Hope. “This is a great opportunity for our members to give back to their community. There is a hunger problem in our own back yard and for us to be able to have a positive impact on that means a lot,” said Paul Schultz, Vice President of Operations at the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County. Thirty stations were set up for the processing and packaging of the fortified soy chicken, rice and vegetable meal. All meals will be distributed in backpack programs, through Collier County Public School summer programs and more than 160 agencies by Meals of Hope collaborators, Harry Chapin Food Bank. “Summer is a time of high anxiety for many children who are out of school and depend on free or reduced lunch programs. With the help of Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, we will reduce that anxiety by providing children with the nourishment they need until beginning school again in the fall,” said Meals of Hope founder and owner Steve Popper. Meals of Hope is a non-profit organization that packages and distributes meals to combat hunger in the United States. The organization has packaged more than 20 million meals since their inception in 2007. The mission of Meals of Hope, a humanitarian food-aid organization, is to package and distribute fortified meals to those in need. A Month by Month

Birthday Theme Guide

W

hile Neapolitan Family celebrates by devoting our July issue to birthdays, we recognize that you need ideas for the other 11 months. To help you, we’ve put together a planning guide for every month of the year! For more ideas check our website at neafamily.com or follow us on Pinterest at http://www.pinterest.com/ neapolitanfam. January:

Frozen Party

Obviously there’s no “frozen” time of the year for Neapolitans but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a special movie-themed party for your January birthday child. You can play the movie while the children are eating or just play the soundtrack in the background. DECORATIONS Paper snowflakes, what else? Cut out a bunch of intricate snowflakes from white copy paper and hang from the ceiling with transparent fishing line. If you have time and want to get really creative, add a little spray glitter. CAKE Instead of a cake, build a tower of powdered sugar doughnut holes. Skewer each hole with a toothpick and stick it into a Styrofoam triangle you’ve covered with foil. FOOD How about “snowman’s noses in snow sauce?” Translation: carrots dipped in ranch dressing. Other fun treats: blue Jell-O cut into squares to mimic ice cubes, frozen grapes, or build-your-own snowmen assembled from marshmallows, small candy and pretzels.

44

July 2014.indd 44

GAMES Play “cold snowball” using white Styrofoam balls. Play the song “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and have kids pass the snowball from one to the next. When the music stops, the one with the snowball is out. FAVORS Search etsy.com for one of the many Frozen printables. Download, print on your computer and then staple to the top of a plastic bag filled with candy. Or, pick up a pair of gloves at the dollar store for each child and tie with a pretty ribbon and thank you tag. February:

Hearts Party

Go with the obvious and have a fun-filled heart-themed party this month. Even if you don’t have a birthday to celebrate, use these ideas for a creative Valentine’s Day party. DECORATIONS String red cardboard hearts on ropes of pink tulle and hang from the ceiling or across doorways as garland. CAKE Make cupcakes with pink frosting and then set a cardboard heart with each guest’s name printed on it into the frosting. FOOD Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut slices of watermelon, decorate heartshaped cookies or dip strawberries in white chocolate and then into pink sprinkles. CRAFTS • Put out sheets of white paper that you’ve drawn large hearts on with a Sharpie and let

the kids color to their “hearts” content. FAVORS Make each guest a heart-shaped crayon. They’re easy: just drop crayon bits into heart-shaped silicone ice cube trays (cheap on amazon.com). Bake the trays for about 8 minutes at 300. When they cool, pop out and you have adorable, heart-shaped crayons. March:

Garden Party

It’s cool enough for an outdoor party so take advantage of the weather and move the fun outside. CAKE Make a flower pot bouquet. Put a Styrofoam ball in a medium size terra cotta planter and cover with green shredded grass. Decorate cupcakes with colorful sprinkles and place each one on a skewer. Put the cupcakes into the pot to cover the ball. Tie a pretty ribbon on the planter. FOOD Let the kids eat “dirt!” Insert a paper cup filled with chocolate pudding inside each new 4-inch plastic flower pot. Crumble some chocolate sandwich cookies across the surface, stick a plastic flower into the “dirt” and stick a few gummy worms into the surface. CRAFTS Purchase a small clay pot for each child along with some craft paints and inexpensive brushes. Let the kids decorate the pots, then set them aside to dry while games are played and refreshments are served. GAMES Hold a watering can relay, asking children to use a small plastic watering can to NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2014

ferry water from one bucket to fill another. FAVORS Send children home with packets of seeds, kid-size garden gloves or small watering cans. April:

Rainbow Party

Tie in “April showers” by building your party around rainbows. DECORATIONS Use helium balloons in the seven colors of the rainbow. Fill bowls of a colorful candy like M&Ms or Skittles as centerpieces. CAKE Make a 9-inch by 13-inch rectangular cake with white or light blue frosting. Use either Skittles or jelly beans to make a rainbow on the cake. You can create a cloud out of miniature marshmallows on one end of the rainbow. FOOD Make a fruit salad using fruits in each of the seven colors of the rainbow layered into a rainbow design. GAMES Spray paint golf balls gold. Have the guests try to toss the golf balls into a pot. FAVORS Give each child a small prism and show them how to create their own rainbows. May:

Tea Party

Have a child who enjoys dressing up? A tea party provides the perfect opportunity to pull out the dress up clothes and let the guests

from two 9-inch round cakes. Slice the rounded top off two cakes and layer them on top of the two flat round layers. Cover with frosting and then add red licorice roping for the baseball stitching.

CAKE Create a tea cup out of the top of a cake cone, a base of sugar cookie and a half of a gummy candy to make the handle. Frosting holds it all together. Put a few Hersey’s Kisses inside the “cup.” Arrange enough for all of the guests on a platter.

FOOD What else but hot dogs, popcorn and Cracker Jack?

FOOD Tiny treats, what else? Using a tiered serving stand, arrange tea sandwiches made from peanut butter and jelly, a selection of small cookies, and strawberries or other berries. GAMES Pick up a dozen inexpensive, unbreakable tea cups and saucers. Let the kids stack a few and race each other to the finish line–whoever makes it to the line without dropping the cups, wins! June:

Baseball Party

Thrill your little athlete with a baseball-themed party. You can combine an at-home party with a visit to a Miracle game or keep all the fun at the house. INVITATIONS Use a Sharpie to write out the invitation on a new baseball. Deliver to each guest. The invite is also their favor! DECORATIONS Make simple “team” pennants by cutting felt triangles. Cut out your child’s name from a contrasting color or felt and glue one letter to each pennant. String and hang over the “concessions” table. CAKE Make a baseball cake

GAMES Fill aluminum pop cans with sand and tape the hole on top closed. Stack them in a pyramid on top of an upside down bucket or other small, flat surface. The goal is to get as many off the bucket as possible by throwing a ball at them. Two points if you get the can completely off the bucket, one point if you knock the can down but it’s still on the bucket. July: Wet & Wild Wipeout Embrace the heat and fill your yard with water games and cool treats for the coolest birthday party this summer. If you really want to embrace the theme, create obstacles from balls, noodles, a slip and slide, and whatever else you can dream up for a fun obstacle course. INVITATIONS Write out the party details on an inflatable beach ball. Deflate and then deliver or mail to each guest. DECORATIONS Fill 1 or 2 plastic kiddie pools with water balloons. Later on the kids can play games with the balloons. CAKE Skip the cake and make a watermelon “sand bucket” and fill with cut-up fruit. You can find easy directions on our website. FOOD Homemade frozen fruit pops, a beach bucket filled with neafamily.com

“goldfish” crackers, and sno-cones made with shaved ice and fresh fruit juice. GAMES The cup race: balance a cup of water on your head while trying to walk as fast as possible to the finish line. August:

HIPPIE Party

“Peace Day” is August 6 setting the stage for a colorful hippie-themed birthday celebration. DECORATIONS Cut daisies, smiley faces and yin-yang symbols out of poster board or construction paper and hang them on the walls. Place a lava lamp in the party area to set the mood. String beads in front of doorways. You can also hang crepe paper streamers vertically from doorways for guests to walk through. CRAFTS/FAVOR Make tie-dyed tshirts with the guests. You can buy kits with all of the supplies at Joann’s. Do the craft first and then let the t-shirts dry in the sun while you have cake and play games.

FOOD Have a tailgate party with hotdogs, hamburgers and other simple kid-friendly foods.

blocks over a blue tablecloth. Put a treasure chest of small treats at the end and let the children choose their bounty.

GAMES Hang a tire from a tree and have a football toss. You can also put up goal posts made of blue painters tape and have kids play “pin the football” between the goal posts.

FAVORS Have a “Pirate Tattoo Parlor” where kids can choose temporary tattoos.

FAVORS Give each child an inexpensive play football and a Sharpie so the kids can autograph each other’s ball.

December birthdays tend to get lost in the holiday celebrations so why not throw a party that celebrates your own “super hero?” Let the day be all about him or her with these cute party ideas.

October:

FALL FESTIVAL

We may not have beautiful gold, red and yellow leaves but you can fake it for a fun, creative Autumn-themed party. DECORATIONS Arrange hay bales, pumpkins, colored leaves and gourds for a pretty backdrop. CAKE A chocolate cake with orange or yellow frosting is perfect for the season. You can decorate with candy corn!

FOOD Fondue will bring back fond memories of the 60’s and 70s. You can also serve peace sign cookies or parfaits made of granola, yogurt and fruit.

FOOD Old fashioned, homemade popcorn balls, caramel apples or slices of apple dipped in caramel all washed down with apple cider or juice.

CAKE Make a rainbow cake by dividing the batter into small batches and add food coloring to each batch until the intensity becomes vibrant and dark. Add the batter in batches to 2 round baking pans. Do not mix the batter. You can gently create swirls by cutting a knife into the batter. Bake, and ice the cakes. Ice the cake completely. Add colored sprinkles to the top.

GAMES Set up several small pumpkins at different distances for a ring toss game. Or fill a big galvanized bucket with water and bob for apples.

GAMES Play musical chairs with 60’s songs.

Grab an eye patch and pirate hat and throw a pirate themed birthday party.

September:

Football

Your little linebacker will love a football-themed party. You can plan the party around an actual televised game. DECORATIONS Cover the food table with a green plastic tablecloth with white tape to mark off the yardage. Buy a bag of mini footballs and string together for a garland. CAKE Make chocolate cupcakes and then frost using a pastry bag filled with brown frosting. Pipe out thin lines of white frosting for the ball laces.

DECORATION Hang black balloons all over the party area and give each child a pirate hat and eye patch.

December:

SUPER HERO

DECORATIONS Print out a bunch of small signs that say “kaboom,” “pow” or “shazam” and use them for everything from decorating the room to topping your cupcakes. Give each child a super hero cape (easy instruction on neafamily.com) so the children can play the part. CAKE Frost cupcakes with yellow, red and blue frosting and then add the “kaboom” tags. FOOD Follow the link on neafamily.com for printables that to dress up the party food. Kids will love water bottles, sandwiches and yogurt that have been personalized. GAMES Make a Super Hero Bean Bag Toss out of a piece of thin plywood. Cut different sized round holes in the plywood and then paint everything white. Add bright starbursts with super hero words. The kids can toss bean bags through the holes for points and prizes. FAVORS Set a blue sheet on the floor and adhere a city scene you create out of cardboard to the bottom portion. At the top, arrange paper clouds. Have each child lay on the sheet on arranged as though they are flying. Snap a photo, print out and each child will have a fun reminder of the day. You can email to the child’s parents with a thank you note as well.

CAKE Make cupcakes with black frosting decorated with small pirate flags. FOOD Since “real” pirate food isn’t all that tasty, stick with kid favorites served in pirate decorated containers. GAMES Walk the Plank, of course. Before kids can reach the treasure have them walk the plank without falling into the alligator pit. Make the plank out of a 2×4 board on cinder NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2014

BIRTHDAYS

A

n art-themed party at home requires creativity and flexibility, but no significant artistic ability. Best of all it will keep guests and the birthday child creatively engaged. Ideal for children ages four to nine, limit the guest list to six or fewer children. Recruit a few parents to stay or hire a neighborhood teen to offer support and encouragement for these open-ended party activities. Art Party Table. Jump right in to your art theme by inviting guests to decorate the table as they arrive. Spread your table with a white paper cloth and supply guests with crayons. If you expect a tame group, leave crayons loose for kids to roll them to one another. For a more rambunctious crowd, sort crayons into baskets or cups so that each child has a wide range of colors to choose from without haggling for the cerulean blue or resorting to tossing them to one another. Art Party Activity. Say no more to the party craft that gets thrown in the trash as soon as the guests leave. Instead, have each child decorate a tote bag that they can use over and over again. At your local craft supply store, purchase one canvas tote bag for the birthday child and each guest. While you’re there, buy fabric markers and squeeze bottles of fabric paint in a variety of colors. Save thin cardboard, such as cereal boxes, in the weeks leading up to the party. Plan ahead. Before guests arrive, cut cardboard to an appropriate size and insert one piece into each bag to prevent bleed-through of paint. Spread a drop-cloth or tarp on the floor to use as a work surface. Place the markers, paints and tote bags on the tarp. Children can sit around the perimeter with materials in the center to minimize damage from

spills. Avoid directing how children use the materials. Each child’s scribble art creation will be unique. Do not expect young children to make precise letters or shapes. Adults can write children’s names and ages on the bags for them with the fabric markers or paint. Decorate the kids. Skip the elaborate decorations and decorate the kids instead. Kids love to have their faces painted and there’s no better place to do it than an art party. If you are creative, you can do it yourself after a little practice. If you really want to go all out, hire a professional to create a work of art on each child’s face. (Be sure parents know you will be face painting ahead of time!) Keep it clean. Keep a bucket of warm soapy water and a washcloth beside the work station to quickly clean up spills and paint-covered hands. Small children may need a reminder not to turn their bags over while they are wet. Instruct them to decorate only one side. When finished, put the bags in a safe place to dry. Leaving the cardboard inside allows the bags to stay flat for transport if they are still wet at the end of the party. Pick up craft supplies and fold up the tarp to free

up space for the kids to play. Art Party Cake. A half-sheet sized cake will leave you an excess of leftovers, but offers a large enough canvas for a small group of eager decorators. Ice the cake simply with white frosting and forgo the usual “happy birthday” message. Placing the cake on a coffee table or piano bench allows everyone to participate at once. Have kids wash hands thoroughly, then they can stand or kneel at the bench to work. Offer a limited color selection of squeezable frosting and sprinkles. This cuts down on squabbles over colors and results in a less chaotic looking cake. Art Party Goodie-Bags. A keepsake tote bag may be enough swag, but in some circles an elaborate goodie bag has become the norm. Prior to the party, stock up on consumable art supplies that can be repackaged for each child. Glitter glue, glue sticks, colored pencils and fun erasers often come in packages of five or eight. Repackage these into your goodie bags, with just one or two of each item for each child rather than a whole pack of each. Surplus supplies can be added to your own stock of craft supplies for future use. A Memorable Day. Party guests and your child will end the day with a unique tote bag, a memorable cake-decorating experience and a few art supplies of their own. An extra bonus for the birthday child is an opportunity to decorate the other side of the bag at a later date. You will have an activity for the next rainy day, a reminder to use up the last of your markers and paints and the satisfaction of knowing you pulled off a creative and engaging party. Birthday Party Basics Five Building Blocks for a Successful At-Home Bash

M

any parents face their children’s birthdays with a mixture of joy and dread - joy at being able to celebrate with their child and dread over how they’re going to go about that celebration and how much it will cost. The at-home birthday party, once the universal form of celebration has been largely replaced by a variety of venues offering party services. And parents often turn to these places out of a desire to avoid the difficulty of hosting the party themselves. But planning and hosting a birthday party can be simple if you work with five basic building blocks.

52

neafamily.com

July 2014.indd 52

Theme The most basic building block and the foundation on which all the others will rest is your party theme. It also will be the easiest since most kids have an idea of what “kind” of party they’d like to have long before their birthday rolls around. You’ll find with a theme in mind, many of the other pieces will fall in place. If you need ideas, check out the article that begins on page50–you’ll find 12 creative themes geared to each month of the year. Food A group of active kids is going to need fuel. You’ll want to consider how much of your party you want to devote to eating when choosing the time of day to hold your bash. Mid-afternoon parties meaning serving lunch. Late afternoon parties lend themselves to fun munchies. As you lay out your party plan, be sure to leave time for eating, even if

it’s simply designating “cake time”. And if you’re serving a meal, make sure you’ve planned time (at the right time) to get everyone served and fed. Marnie Ann Pacino, author of “Cool Party, Mom!,” suggests keeping the food simple, particularly since kids can be picky eaters. But simple doesn’t have to be boring. “Make it fun!” says Pacino. “The simplest of snacks can be partied up by serving them in a new way.” Particularly if you’ve got a crowd of older kids, creating the food can become a bigger portion of your party time. Build-yourown mini pizzas make a great meal kids enjoy both preparing and consuming. Or set up a taco bar and let them get creative. Make your own sundae bars are always a big hit. Games and special activities Silly party games make up the bulk of a successful at-home party. This is your chance to let the crowd wiggle and giggle and run around. To prevent the wildness from getting out of hand, intersperse your games throughout the party. Play one game early on to get things rolling. Then switch to another activity before playing another game. And always plan more games than you think you’ll need. They tend to go much quicker than you realize when played by a group of lively kids. Three to five games usually fit well into a 2 to 2 ½ hour party. And remember to look for ways to customize the games to fit your party theme. A game of “Doggy, Doggy, Where’s Your Bone?” can become “Slipper, Slipper, Who’s Got the Glass Slipper?” for a princess party. Pin the tail on the donkey is an easy game to adapt to any theme. Make a simple bean NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2014

bag toss structure out of light plywood and decorate with this year’s theme. Next year, just repaint to match your theme. You can also capitalize on your party’s theme by planning theme-related activities, such as a treasure hunt for a Pirate party or an “archeological dig” for an Egyptian-themed party. These activities frequently become the highlight of home-based parties and kids will talk about them long after the party. Don’t be afraid to break out the board games, particularly if they fit your theme. Engaging a few guests in a game of “Pretty, Pretty Princess” while the others work on a princess crown craft can make the process smoother and enjoyable for everyone. Be sure to pick one with a short game-play time to keep the party rolling. Crafts Add some dimension to your party by offering a craft activity. Not big on crafts? As Pacino points out, “The best part of crafting with kids is that you do not need to be a craft diva with a glue stick tucked behind your ear”. Giving kids a chance to make something with their hands builds both a quieter activity and a take-home gift into your party plan. For younger children you’ll want to stay away from crafts involving glue or paint. Keep

NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2014

July 2014.indd 53

the activity as simple as possible and enlist a few parents to stick around for extra sets of hands during this part of your party. Take care in planning the timing of your craft. If the item involves a drying or setting time to finish, make certain to do it early in your party to allow adequate time. Presents Presents cap off the at-home party. While many party sites discourage kids from opening presents with their friends, home parties make the ideal setting for this. Kids love to watch their friend’s reaction to their gift and enjoy seeing what other gifts are given. Planning this activity into your party not only rounds out the schedule, but allows for some fun interaction. Make this an event by providing the birthday child a special place to sit while opening, so all the guests can see him. You can also add a second chair beside the first for the gift giver to watch up close as his present is opened. This helps avoid any complaints about missing out on the action. With these five building blocks, you’re well on your way to building an amazing party. Simply adjust each element to reflect the particular theme of your child’s party and you’ll have a party you can be proud of.

Common Wisdom

Be kind to people and animals too. Laugh a lot. Just tell the truth. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon. Clean up your own mess. Wish upon a star. Please your dentist and floss your teeth. Read a good book – or two (and read to a child!). Good health is priority #1. Lend a hand. Give blood. Call your mom and dad, or kids. Take the dog for long walks and smile at who you meet. Be a friend. Don’t drink and drive. Let art color your life. Be gentle with the earth. Cut the drama and don’t go to extremes. Never look back unless you are planning to go there. Be thankful. "A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty."
