This Month: Jumping into 2014

Every month cover photographer Peggy Farren and I get together and brainstorm the next issue’s cover. Sometimes we have a pretty good idea of what we want but there are months when we need to work out kinks. We’ve done over 100 covers together (wow!) and the only thing I can count on each month is that we’ll have fun. We catch each other up on the latest on our kids (Peggy’s son is an awesome musician– check out “Fake Problems” on youtube.com), throw around business ideas for each other and chat about mutual friends. And, there’s usually a goofy photo or two when I step in as model to check lighting or show our cover child how I want her to hold a prop. That’s how we ended up with the photo above. We played around with every pink or red prop we could find–flowers, sunglasses and candy. Personally, I think the result is adorable. I love working with Peggy and look forward to our monthly creativity session. February is always a big month as we present our annual education and preschool guides. It’s not the easiest decision to make and we hope our information will make it a little easier for you. We also have a terrific article on Florida’s Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Program written by Stacy Nicolau. If you’ve wondered whether VPK is right for your child, the article should answer your questions. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month so we have two special articles on making dental visits easier and on helping your children develop good dental habits. Finally, we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day! We have 8 tips for a family Valentine’s Day on page 12 plus be sure to check our website at neafamily.com for several Valentine’s Day themed articles as well as a ton of events. Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy February!

Movie & DVD Reviews for you and your family

T

his month brings iconic Lego characters, yet more vampires, and a zebra born with half his stripes. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters and on DVD and blu-ray in February. THE LEGO MOVIE

ROBOCOP

PG for mild action and rude humor. In theaters 2/07. Ok for kids 6+. Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 Reels. thelegomovie.warnerbros.com/ index.html This computer-generated comedy centers on a lowly Lego figure (voiced by Chris Pratt) who joins a group intent on battling an evil force after a case of mistaken identity. From the filmmakers behind “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” and “Robot Chicken,” Will Arnett co-stars as the voice of Batman, who along with Superman, make appearances in the Warner Bros. picture. Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, and Alison Brie head up the rest of the voice cast.

PG-13 for Intense sequences of action including frenetic gun violence throughout, brief strong language, sensuality and some drug material. In theaters 2/12. Ok for kids 14+. Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels. www.robocop.com Remember how violent the first “Robocop” was? This remake is just as violent, if not moreso. No gun was spared in this reboot of the 1987 movie from director José Padilha. The story once again centers on a slain police officer (played by “The Killing’s” Joel Kinnaman - one of my favorites) who gets resurrected as a crime-fighting cyborg. Until, that is, memories of his previous life begin to make him doubt his corrupt corporate overlords. Gary Oldman (yes!) co-stars as the doctor who suffers a crisis-of-conscience after bringing life back to the man in the form of a mechanical body and reprogrammed brain, while Samuel L. Jackson plays a larger-thanlife media mogul.

VAMPIRE ACADEMY Not yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 2/14. Ok for kids 13+. Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 Reels. va-movie.com/ Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) is a dhampir, half-vampire half-human who’s training to be a guardian at St Vladimir’s Academy, along with others like her. In their world, there are good vampires ( Moroi, who co-exist peacefully among humans, only take blood from donors, and possess the ability to control one of the four elements - water, earth, fire or air) and bad vampires (Strigoi, evil vampires who drink to kill). Rose and other dhampir guardians are trained to protect Moroi and kill Strigoi. But Rose must run away from St

Life is not all black and white for Khumba, a young zebra born with only half his stripes who’s rejected by his superstitious herd and blamed for a sudden drought affecting the land. Teaming up with a sassy wildebeest and a flamboyant ostrich, Khumba sets out on a daring mission across the Karoo desert to find the legendary waterhole where the first zebras got their stripes. Liam Neeson, Jake T. Austin, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne and AnnaSophia Robb lend their voices to this cute story. THE JUNGLE BOOK (TWO-DISC DIAMOND EDITION) Rated G. On DVD/blu-ray 2/11. TRAVEL

By Andrea Breznay

H

ave you been thinking about a romantic, relaxing getaway with your spouse or partner? It can be hard to pull off–getting child care lined up, time off work if needed, deciding where to go and what to do, and finally, making the actual travel plans. Plus, you may be wondering if it’s fair to get away without your little ones.

If you haven’t been away from the kids in a long time (if ever), don’t fret. According to local counselor Kimberly Rodgers, LCSW: “Vacations without the children allow parents to de-stress, re-energize, and refocus with a fresh perspective. Parents easily get caught up in the parenting role and lose sight of who they were before having children. Spending social time with other adults or time alone away from home allows parents to reconnect with their identities beyond the parent role. A strong sense of self is vital to feeling fulfilled in life.” Now that you’re convinced that a getaway is a good idea, it’s time to plan.

It’s Time for a

My suggestion is a romantic spa/golf trip to Orlando (yes, romance and golf do go together!). I spent a few days over Valentine’s Day last year at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. Our itinerary included a full day at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, two rounds of golf and several spa services at the Mokara Spa. It was the perfect combination of activity and relaxation for two golf lovers! But, the resort offers so many amenities that nongolfers will enjoy it just as much. Plus, it’s a great compromise for a golfer/non-golfer couple. While the golfer is at the academy practicing new skills, the non-golfer can be

relaxing poolside or using the spa. The Omni Orlando Resort is a beautiful hotel with 720 guest rooms as well as larger villas. A formal pool for adults only has private cabanas. There is a huge family pool with an 850-foot lazy river, water slide and water tower. A poolside restaurant makes a casual lunch or drinks and a snack convenient. We started off our stay with a round of golf the afternoon we arrived. ChampionsGate has 36 holes of golf. We started out on the National Course–it winds through 200 acres of secluded woodlands, wetlands and former orange groves. The scenery is stunning and most of it is wide open with nothing to obstruct the beauty. We also played the International Course during our stay, an authentic links style course designed by Greg Norman. The course has 160 (yes, 160) pot bunkers. It’s tough, I won’t lie, but it’s so gorgeous that you’ll forgive Greg for the difficulty. Our second day was devoted to learning! The Leadbetter Golf Academy is truly first

class. Arriving at the practice range about 30 minutes before our lessons were to start, we found a mountain of balls set up for each of us with printed name plates. Everything is top quality and your needs are definitely anticipated. The Leadbetter Golf Academy can accommodate groups and individuals for sessions lasting from one hour to half-day and full-day lessons, as well as one- to three-day retreats. The instructors are first-rate and I felt encouraged even when I was struggling with new skills. The one- and two-day “mini schools” offer full swing analysis plus instruction as well as a personalized plan for ongoing improvement. After arriving home, we received a link to our online video lessons so we could watch at any time. After a day of golf, the next morning was devoted to the spa. You can choose from a menu of services including massages, wraps and body treatments. There are also full- and half-day packages available including the couples package–two hours of massage and body treatments that I can promise will result in unknotted muscles and peaceful dispositions. Omni Orlando has several excellent restaurants on the grounds. Sushi and Asian dishes at Zen, Italian at Trevi’s, or steaks, ribs and fish at David’s Club are all options. Croc’s

is poolside for casual lunches and there is also a grille at the golf courses. We had at least one meal in each of the restaurants and all of them were very good to excellent. The resort is also in close proximity to several casual and chain restaurants in the town of ChampionsGate. Need a little more encouragement that a quick getaway will be good for your relationship? Kimberly Rodgers concludes: “For couples, it is challenging to find quality time together and tune into one another when daily parental duties take priority, from homework to activities to household maintenance. Parents who vacation together without children are able to tune back into their connection before the family routine took over. Beyond just rekindling the romance, time together as a couple that is relaxing, fun, or adventurous allows their bond to strengthen when the children are not present and the focus of attention. Parents can also have time to complete important discussions that may often be interrupted by mini-me’s.” Take Kimberly’s advice and make plans for a getaway now! You’ll find a unique combination of activity and relaxation that will rejuvenate and refresh you and your partner at The Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate.

VALENTINE’S DAY

By ELIANA OSBORN

Family Valentine Fun 8 Tips for making Valentine’s Day a family day filled with love.

A

candlelight dinner, a wrapped gift waiting next to my plate—has my husband finally gotten the hints I’ve been dropping? No, I’m just remembering Valentine’s Days of my childhood. My mom always had a special night for the whole family. Even now that I’m in my thirties, I can count on her sending a package with fun little treats every February. Romantic evenings are great, but when you become a parent love takes on a whole new dimension. Kids need to see their parents being affectionate with each other, but they also crave feeling like a part of a bigger unit. Family love is a great thing to cultivate—especially before the teen years when it can be harder to express your feelings during emotional ups and downs. Last year I decorated a little white mailbox that I found at Target for a dollar; every night for the first two weeks of February, I left a special note or treat for my son. He loved waking up and running to see what the mailbox held. Then he would work secretly on putting something in for me to discover later. He’s already asked me when we can get the mailbox out again. Whatever your style or family situation, there are plenty of ways to make Valentine’s Day more than a romantic holiday. Other ideas include:

1.

Start the day off right with heart-shaped pancakes topped with strawberries and whipped cream.

12

neafamily.com

February 2014.indd 12

2.

Send each child a card to arrive in the mail; there’s nothing like getting a special letter about why you are great. They can re-read it whenever they need a little pick me up.

3.

Visit an assisted living center and spread the love. After Christmas, things die down and guests are welcome. Bring homemade cards, treats or flowers to a few lonely seniors.

4.

Make a family collage to display on the wall. Draw, cut out pictures or write words, all expressing things you love about each other. It can serve as a reminder all year long.

5.

Go on a date as a family. Whether it is dinner and a movie, or ice cream and bowling, invite the kids and do a special activity.

6.

Put on a slideshow of family pictures. Kids can’t believe how much they grow.

Power Point is an easy way to display, or many online photo sites have slideshow options.

7. 8.

Have a theme dinner—everything red, everything in the shape of a heart, or using special names for dishes. Rent a black and white movie and watch together. The kids might groan but an old-fashioned romance is appropriate for all ages and can be a lot of fun, even if you are laughing at the forgotten fashions and dramatic embraces. Life changes when you have kids. Your heart grows in ways you never imagined. Take some time this Valentine’s Day to make it extra clear to your children that you love them and are thrilled to have them in your life. Eliana Osborn lives with her husband and two sons. She’s hoping for flowers this Valentine’s Day but will be content with a special craft from preschool. NEAPOLITANfamily • February 2014

HEALTH

By Rachael Moshman

Dental Visits without Tears

V

isiting the dentist is a scary experience for many children. The dentist is a virtual stranger, even after several visits. Plus, the dentist and hygienists wear masks that cover their faces for most of the visit, making them appear even less friendly. It can be a very over stimulating experience with the bright lights, loud buzzing and smell of chemicals. Plus, the expectation of holding still for an extended length of time is frustrating for many children. Fortunately, there are some ways to make the visit a bit less frightening and easier to handle. •

14

Find a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentists have specialized training in treating children. Their offices are often designed to be more comfortable and inviting to children. Start early. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children see a pediatric dentist as soon as their first tooth comes in, typically between six and twelve months of age. Getting children accustomed to dental visits from a young age often makes visits less traumatic. Tell your child what to expect. Children typically only see the dentist twice a year. They may forget what happens at the visits in between appointments. Walk them through what to expect before each visit. Read books about going to the dentist. Don’t gloss over parts that they struggled with last time. For

neafamily.com

February 2014.indd 14

example, if they became agitated when it was time to swish the fluoride rinse around their mouth, gently let them know that they will have to do it again. Neglecting to mention it could lead to more anxiety. •

Practice good dental hygiene at home. Brushing and flossing your child’s teeth daily will help keep teeth and gums healthy. This may result in quicker and easier dental visits. Feeding your child a healthy diet and limiting sweets will also help accomplish this.

Find a song about going to the dentist or make up one of your own. Sing it in the car on the way to the appointment. Have a special plan for after the dentist, such as visit to the park or trip to the movie theater. Do these things before and after every visit to give your children good memories of going to the dentist. •

Deal with your own fears. Many adults still have severe dental anxiety. Children pick up on their parent’s worries. Your child won’t be able to be calm or relaxed if she knows you aren’t. Take time to address your own issues before the appointment so you don’t project your negative feelings onto your child’s experience.

Let the braver child go first. Most people with multiple children have the oldest child receive treatment first. This isn’t necessarily the best order. If a younger child is less fearful, let them go first.

Dentist visits don’t have to be terrifying – for child or parent!

Start some traditions. A few days before the dentist appointment, start reading books or watching cartoons about dentists, teeth and tooth care.

RACHAEL MOSHMAN is a mom and freelance writer. She actually enjoys going to the dentist. Find her at www.rachaelmoshman.com.

Make Brushing Teeth Fun During Nat’l Children’s Dental Health Month

G

ood dental hygiene is an important issue for parents to implement with their children from a very young age. Tooth decay (which leads to cavities) remains the most common chronic disease in children, despite the fact that it could be easily prevented. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) over 40% of children ages 2 to 11 have had a cavity in their baby teeth. NIDCR also reports that decay is increasing in preschool age children; a problem that is entirely preventable through good oral hygiene. This February marks the 65th annual month-long focus on children’s dental health. National Children’s Dental Health Month is sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA) to raise awareness about oral hygiene. Throughout the month, the benefits of good oral hygiene are promoted extensively to children and their families, teachers, and other caregivers. To further this campaign, the ADA provides many free resources for parents and educators, to include posters. This year’s motto: “Join the Super Smiles Team.” The ADA recommends that children brush for “Two Minutes, Two Times a Day.” However, brushing teeth is often a chore that many children (and their parents) dread. Part of the goal of National Children’s Dental Health Month is to provide activities and support materials to help parents and teachers make brushing teeth fun. Along with those resources, here are a few tips that have worked in our house.

1. Visit the ADA website and download free coloring sheets, crossword puzzles, certificates, a puppet template, and more. Consider hanging up a calendar and placing special stickers 2. Have your child create a calendar to track good oral health practices. Post the calendar in the bathroom and reward children with a gold star or happy face for each day of great oral care! 3. Sing songs. “Happy Birthday” or the “ABCs” both sung two times through is usually a good length for brushing 4. Buy your children fun toothbrushes. But be sure to only use a pea sized amount of toothpaste. 5. Join the free America’s Tooth Fairy Kids Club. Members will receive personalized letters from the Tooth Fairy and quarterly fun educational activities! 6. Purchase or check out the book/DVD combo: “The Magical Toothfairies.” This is a fun and adventurous take on the importance of brushing teeth. 7. Set a good example by brushing as a family. If your children watch you brushing your teeth, they will probably be more enthusiastic about brushing their teeth. The NIDCR provides the following 4 tips for preventing tooth decay: 1. Limit between-meal snacks. This reduces the number of acid attacks on teeth and gives teeth a chance to repair themselves. 2. Save candy, cookies, soda, and other sugary

drinks for special occasions 3. Limit fruit juice. Follow the Daily Juice Recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics. 4. Make sure your child doesn’t eat or drink anything with sugar in it after bedtime tooth brushing. Saliva flow decreases during sleep. Without enough saliva, teeth are less able to repair themselves after an acid attack. Good habits begin in the home. Developing a good oral hygiene routine at an early age and visiting the dentist regularly will help your children ward off tooth decay and cavities. Let’s help our kids “Join the Super Smiles Team” today! ALEXA BIGWARFE resides with her husband, three children, ages 6, 4, and 2, and their dog.

Healthcare Network Delivers “Hope on Wheels” Dental Care to Underserved Children

W

hen six-year-old Juanita stepped onto the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® in her Habitat for Humanity community, it was the first time in her life that she’d seen a dentist. For Dr. Kelley Johnson, it wasn’t the first time she’d seen a six-year-old with 16 cavities. It’s not so uncommon on the Care Mobile, or any of the Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida’s dental offices, where most children experience medical or dental care for the first time. Operated by the Healthcare Network in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southwest Florida, this stateof-the-art pediatric office delivers “hope on wheels,” with medical and dental screenings, preventative and restorative dental care, eye exams, physicals and health education to 2,000 Collier County children who would otherwise go without needed care. More recently, the Healthcare Network launched a school-based sealant program aboard the Care Mobile, providing hundreds of underserved children with protection from tooth decay. This sort of comprehensive managed care is the core of the Healthcare Net-

work’s mission to provide quality healthcare accessible to everyone in our community. The Network annually serves more than 36,000 patients (25,000 of whom are children) at 13 locations throughout Collier County. The Network’s Care Mobile operates year-round, visiting low-income neighborhoods, Title I schools, day cares, preschools and summer camps throughout Collier County. These visits address critical childhood health needs, eliminate barriers faced by underserved families, provide a referral network and reduce reliance on expensive and inappropriate hospital and emergency room visits. For more information on the Care Mobile, call (239) 658-3113 or check www.healthcareswfl.org.

alling all LEGO® brick enthusiasts! Naples Botanical Garden hosts Nature Connects, Art with LEGO® Bricks. Experience the Garden like never before as the everyday LEGO brick is used 500,000 times over to create 14 individual displays located through the landscape of the Garden. Ranging in size from just 6 inches to 8 feet tall, Nature Connects is the vision of LEGO® certified professional, Sean Kenney. Inspired by elements of nature, gardens, and animals, Kenney illustrates how all things on Earth rely on a complex and amazing network that is integral to our planet’s health. Just as LEGO bricks connect together to build or create something fun, colorful, and intricate – so do elements of nature. From sculptures of baseball stadiums and animals to a train set featured on the television series “30 Rock”, LEGO brick artist Sean Kenney does not rely on computers to design his sculptures and uses only everyday basic LEGO bricks. Sean Kenney, who sculpts with this unique medium full-time, hopes his work inspires children and adults to create their own masterpieces. About the Show Travel through the Garden to see 27 sculptures made from LEGO bricks in 14 individual displays. As you discover each display learn how nature is interconnected just like the nearly 500,000 LEGO bricks used to build these amazing larger-than-life sculptures. Mark your Calendars! Sean Kenney will be in the Garden, February 14, the opening day of LEGO Sculptures in the Garden, to sign books and answer questions from fellow LEGO fans. Also, the Garden hosts its own LEGO brick sculpture contest for children under 18 on Saturday, March 8 and offers great prizes. This chemical irregularity led to violent outbursts, legal troubles and depression. Discipline only incited threatening behavior that caused him to be brought to the Crisis Stabilization Unit. His family doubted he would ever graduate. But with the help of the Education Day Treatment Program – a unique partnership with DLC and the Public Schools that helps kids with learning disabilities and behavioral health problems - he thrived on the low class size, self-paced learning model and team effort between the teachers, therapists and family. His Mind is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. Josh is among one in four in Collier County who suffer from a mental illness. One in nine of us will experience some form of substance abuse. When a family member, friend or coworker battles a mental health or substance abuse problem, we suffer with them. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community.

A not-for-profit organization founded and still governed by community leaders, the David Lawrence Center is the behavioral health component of our community’s healthcare network. A true local resource, it relies on donations, fees and grants to invest in the health, safety and wellbeing of our community. When you or someone you love needs help, call on the highly compassionate, committed and competent professionals of the David Lawrence Center to inspire you to move beyond the crisis towards life-changing wellness.

The tradition carries on, as the staff at LPS believes that children learn best when involved physically and intellectually in their learning environment. Students enjoy a small child to teacher ratio which allows children to have the optimal opportunity to learn basic concepts in math and literacy through age appropriate, integrated programs of art, science, literature, music, social studies, character development and of course, play. Children participate in a planned environment that encourages academic, social, emotional and physical development in an age appropriate experience

taught by certified elementary teachers. The VPK program, taught by Director/Owner Jennifer Lange, is consistently one of the highest rated VPK programs in Collier County. EDUCATION PRESCHOOL By Stacy Nicolau

Is VPK A-OK For Your Child? Kindergarten

no longer consists of naps,

milk and cookies, and playtime. Academics are introduced immediately to our little ones, and some of the students simply are not ready. A single classroom of kindergarteners can range from proficient readers to children who were unfamiliar with their ABCs. The latter, it seemed, may be doomed to struggle to keep up with their better-prepared peers, and this struggle would continue throughout their elementary school years. Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) aims to level that playing field by giving young students the educational foundation they need to succeed.

HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN DECIDING WHETHER TO ENROLL YOUR CHILD IN VPK. HISTORY: Florida became one of the first states to pass an amendment (in 2002) approved by voters to create a voluntary pre-kindergarten program that would be available to all Florida residents who reach the age of four by September 1st of that school year, regardless of the ability to pay. The program helps build a strong foundation for school using educational materials that are geared towards various stages in a child’s development, according to the Florida Department of Education. The program, which is offered in many private preschools, childcare

centers, community parks and recreation, and public schools, began with the 2005-2006 school year.

than 20 students and/or a summer programs that includes 300 hours of instruction in a classroom of no more than 12 students.

2.

5.

PRIVATE SCHOOL: To offer VPK, private providers must be a licensed childcare provider, day care facility or a nonpublic faith-based childcare provider that is exempt from licensure. The provider must demonstrate either accreditation from a state or nation accreditation agency, hold a current Gold Seal Quality Care designation or demonstrate that they meet all of the VPK requirements (see links).

3.

PUBLIC SCHOOL: Public school VPK programs locations are chosen by the district. The law requires that every school district offers enough summer VPK program space to serve every eligible child that wants to participate.

4.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: The Florida Department of Education states that the provider must offer a school-year program of at least 540 hours of instruction in a classroom limited to no more

SPECIAL NEEDS: Children with special needs can participate in the VPK Specialized Instructional Services Education Program where certified or licensed instructors provide education in private or small group settings. The child must have a current instructional education plan (IEP) from that school district.

6.

ACCEPTANCE: Florida law states that acceptance into a VPK program must be free from discrimination based on race, color or national origin. Students may be objectively selected based on geography, prior enrollment, random selection (lottery) or on a first come, first served basis. Some programs may select only targeted at risk populations to serve.

7.

COST: Not only is the program free of charge regardless of family income, a provider also is prohibited from charging a registration fee or require parent to pay for

additional services.

8.

TRANSPORTATION: Programs are not required to provide transportation; parents may choose those providers that do offer this service.

9.

RESULTS: All providers receive Kindergarten Readiness Rates that show how their program prepared students at the end of each year or summer program. Parents can view these results by contacting their local early learning coalition.

10.

PARTICIPATION: By the 20112012 school year, 80% of Florida 4 year-olds were enrolled in a VPK program. In that same year, 79% of participants were deemed “ready for kindergarten” as opposed to 55% of 4 year-olds who had not attended a VPK. MONTESSORI ACADEMY OF NAPLES (239) 597-2255 Montessori Academy of Naples offers comprehensive Montessori programs for students ages 8-weeks to 15-years old. The Christian Classical Academy is a private school for children pre-K4 to 8th grades. CCA was founded in 2007 from a need and desire to offer an affordable Christian and classical education in Southwest Florida. Traditional 5 days a week and a non-traditional hybrid community school programs are offered. The Academy also offers a unique non-traditional education for families interested in a private Christian education and home education. This non-traditional, “hybrid” community school combines a family’s efforts from home with a classroom environment. Hybrid students come to the school three days and are home educated by a parent on those days at home under the guidance and direction of our staff.

Founded in 1973, Naples Christian Academy is Collier County’s oldest independent school and the only private school in Collier County to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School. The Academy is fully accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Naples Christian Academy’s mission is to partner with Christian parents to develop students with hearts impassioned to love God, minds disciplined to think biblically, and hands prepared to serve. This is achieved through a small overall school size, highly qualified and credentialed teachers, a challenging integrated curriculum, foreign language instruction, and a related arts program, which encompasses music, art, technology and physical education. The Academy fields inter-scholastic teams in several sports at the middle school level and offers a variety of other extracurricular options for students. The Academy serves students from PreK-3 through 8th grade. neafamily.com

Navigating the Private School Admission Process

M

any parents make the decision to put their children in a private

school, but sometimes the admission process can look daunting. Usually it’s simply a matter of knowing what each school requires for admission, and what the due date is for each step. While the order in which you do things may vary from school to school, the general steps are the same. Because these steps take time, you may want to start the process up to a year ahead, but no later than March of the year before your child will start.

Narrow down your choices. Choose what school interests you most, but have a list of several you are considering. Then request the application and information about each. There may be something that helps you narrow your choices such as classes offered or cost. Schedule a visit and interview. Schedule a visit with each school. You can either visit at open house or have your own tour. Some schools allow the prospective student to shadow another student in the same grade for a day to get a feel for the school. You may want to schedule your interview for the same time as your campus visit. Some schools interview the parents and student together while others interview them separately. It’s a good idea to discuss ahead what questions might be asked and what answers are most appropriate. You might even role-play the interview with your child.

3161 Santa Barbara Blvd, Naples

Now accepting applications for enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year for PreK3 to 8th grade. Contact the Academy office at 239.455.1080 to schedule your personal tour.

Find out about admission tests. At the interview, be sure to find out about admission tests. For younger children, standardized test scores from the previous year are probably enough, but high school students are often required to take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). Both tests have short essay and multiple choice aptitude questions that test math, reading, and comprehension and use of language. It may be beneficial, especially for students who don’t test well, to get a SSAT practice book well in advance in order to prepare for the test. Fill out the formal application. Once you’ve made your final choice, fill out the formal application. Be sure to send everything requested. That might include a registration fee, teacher recommendation letters, transcripts from previous years and standardized test scores. The deadline for applications for many schools is mid-January for the following fall. Some schools have rolling admissions, which means there is not set cut off, but spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

COMPETITIVE TUITION RATES

Apply for financial aid if needed. Apply for financial aid as soon as possible. This is one reason it’s important to apply early. Scholarships and financial aid go quickly, and you can miss out if you don’t pay attention to deadlines. Apply as soon after the financial aid starting date as possible for the best chance of receiving aid. If you feel a private school is the best choice for your child, it’s important to start now by collecting and filling out admissions forms, scheduling visits and testing, and applying for financial aid. EDUCATION

The Most Important Factor in Your Child’s Education is

YOU!

It’s lunch time, but Jeffrey Daniels doesn’t join the guys going to play racquetball. He turns down lunch at the club. Instead, Jeffrey heads to his son’s elementary school to shoot hoops with his son and his son’s friends, and maybe read a story to the class before he heads back to work. Why does Jeffrey choose to spend his lunch hour with seven-year-olds? Because most educators and parents agree that parental involvement is the best way to guarantee a child’s success in school. Whether your child is facing his first day of kindergarten or venturing into middle school, you are a partner with the school to ensure that he receives the best education possible. 52
