from the publisher… This Month: Happy Father’s Day

June: the end of the school year, graduations, the beginning of summer and last, but definitely not least, Father’s Day. It’s a busy month for families in Southwest Florida. In an interesting coincidence, I had just finished reading “The 5 Love Languages” by Dr. Gary Chapman when Sue LeBreton’s article (pages 4647) dropped into my in-box. I found the concept fascinating so I’m pleased to share it in this issue. We all show and receive love in ways that are unique and when I started to look at how the people I care about display their feelings it helped me to open up to receiving. It’s easy to get caught up in doing things for others the way we want them done for us–when we understand their language, our gifts and expressions of love become about the recipient rather than us. I love that the general concept works for family, friends, even employees and our coworkers. Read Sue’s article to see how you can use the “love languages” to pick out the perfect gift for dad! I’d like to offer our cover dad, Brent Hernandez, a special Father’s Day wish. Brent and his wife Katy are new to the community and are settling in with their two beautiful daughters. The young family has been through so much and Brent and Katy are both an inspiration. I hope their first father’s Day in Naples is filled with love and happiness!

Neapolitan Family is available free of charge at over 275 distribution points throughout Collier County as well as digitally at www. neafamily.com.

Another inspirational family is the LeSage family of Naples and Killington. Most of us think about snowbirds as being older, retired folks but the LeSage’s and other younger families are moving back and forth between two (or more) homes. As an aside, I’m excited to be spending some time at their hiking spa in Vermont in August. I promise a full report!

REEL LIFE WITH JANE

By Jane Louise Boursaw

Family Movie & DVD Reviews N

ew on the big screen in June is Tom Cruise in another sci-fi action flick (but he’s so good at them), an adaptation of a best-selling John Green novel, and our beloved Hiccup and Toothless in “How to Train Your Dragon 2.” Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters and on DVD and blu-ray in June. EDGE OF TOMORROW

PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language and brief suggestive material. In theaters 6/06. Ok for kids 13+. Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 Reels. www.edgeoftomorrowmovie.com Tom Cruise brings another sci-fi action movie to the big screen, playing a soldier fighting in a war with aliens. We’ve seen that before, right? But this one has a “Groundhog Day” effect, as he finds himself caught in a time loop of his last day in battle. He becomes more skilled along the way, thanks to fellow soldier Emily Blunt. Doug Limon directs, with Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson and Lara Pulver co-starring. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS PG-13 for thematic elements, some sexuality and brief strong language. In theaters 6/06. Ok for kids 13+. Reel Preview: 5 of 5 Reels. thefaultinourstarsmovie.com Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort) are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and

a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel’s other constant companion is an oxygen tank, as the two met in a cancer support group. Josh Boone directs this romantic drama based on the book by John Green. Willem Dafoe, Nat Wolff and Laura Dern co-star.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 PG for adventure action and some mild rude humor. In theaters 6/13. Ok for kids 6+. Reel Preview: 4.5 of 5 Reels. www.howtotrainyourdragon.com It’s been five years since Hiccup and Toothless successfully united dragons and Vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snotlout and the rest of the gang challenge each other to dragon races, the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When they discover a secret ice cave that’s home to hundreds of wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Dean DeBlois directs, with voices by Jay Baruchel, Kristen Wiig, America Ferrera and Jonah Hill. TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Not yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 6/27. Ok for kids 13+. Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 Reels. www.transformersmovie.com Director Michael Bay’s fourth chapter of the action franchise stars Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager, a struggling car mechanic and single dad. The story picks up four years after the

invasion of Chicago in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” When Cade and his daughter (Nicola Peltz) discover a Transformer in their midst, it stirs things up between the Autobots and Decepticons, and brings a paranoid government official into their lives. Reynor and Stanley Tucci also star in this movie executive produced by Steven Spielberg. This is the first film in the franchise to feature an entirely new cast and the first to feature the Dinobots. NEW ON DVD | BLU-RAY: THE ADVENTURES OF BATMAN: THE COMPLETE SERIES Not rated. On DVD 6/03. Ok for kids 6+. Reel Review: 4 of 5 Reels. Ah… the good old days when cartoons were cartoons, not grownup stories masquerading as kids’ fare. Even better, “The Adventures of Batman” shorts included as part of “The Batman/Superman Hour” in 1967 featured over-the-top characters and catchy music, giving it a realistic look and feel by cartoon standards of that era. CURIOUS GEORGE: THE COMPLETE 7TH SEASON Not rated. On DVD 6/03. Ok for kids 3+. Reel Review: 4 of 5 Reels. The curious little monkey is back with friends in this collection that includes all 12 episodes of season seven. From Australia down under to his own backyard, join George as he discovers the colorful wildlife and habitats surrounding him. The PBS KIDS show, which has won two Daytime Emmy Awards, continues to expand George’s world, while keeping the NEAPOLITANfamily • June 2014

charm of the beloved books by Margret and H.A. Rey. This series inspires kids and promotes a hands-on exploration of the concepts of science, math, and engineering. LITTLEST PET SHOP: STRIKE A POSE! Not rated. On DVD 6/03. Ok for kids 3+. Reel Review: 4 of 5 Reels. The tiny characters in this series have been a hit since my teenager was little, and they’re still just as adorable. In this collection of five episodes, Blythe and her best friends — Zoe the spaniel, Pepper the skunk, Sunil the mongoose, Russell the hedgehog, Penny the panda and Minka the monkey — show that friendship and fun are always in fashion. Sunil becomes an internet sensation, Vinnie befriends some dancing lizards, and the Pet Shop welcomes a young alligator in this cute collection from Shout! Factory. THE WHEELS ON THE BUS: A DAY ON THE FARM Not rated. On DVD 6/03. Ok for kids 3+. Reel Review: 5 of 5 Reels. Wait, what?! Roger Daltrey is the voice of Argon the Dragon? Yes, it’s true. The WHO frontman has come a long way since rocking stadiums in the 1960s. That’s just one of the fun aspects of this musical adventure featuring Papaya, the fun-loving monkey, and his toucan friend, Mango, as they visit a farm, then spend a day at the market and learn all about healthy eating. COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY TV-PG. On DVD/Blu-ray 6/10. Ok for kids 7+. Reel Review: 5 of 5 Reels. Where do fun, fascination and education

meet? At the intersection of “COSMOS: A SpaceTime Odyssey.” Hosted by renowned astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, this 13-part adventure transports viewers across the universe of space and time, bringing to life never-before-told stories of the heroic quest for knowledge and a deeper understanding of nature. With an updated Cosmic Calendar, dazzling visual effects, and the wondrous Ship of the Imagination, this is a great series for both you and your kids. Great for homeschoolers, too. THE GOOD WITCH’S GIFT TV-PG. On DVD 6/17. Ok for kids 8+. Reel Review: 4 of 5 Reels. It’s rare to find things the whole family can watch together, so thank goodness for movies like “The Good Witch’s Gift.” This TV movie, which originally aired in 2010, finds Cassandra Nightingale (Catherine Bell) and her handsome sweetheart, Police Chief Jake Russell (Chris Potter), engaged to be married. Getting into the spirit of the season, they set their wedding date for Christmas Eve — only six days away! But as they hurry to plan the wedding, trouble clouds their happiness when a mysterious man from Jake’s past returns. ERNEST & CELESTINE PG for some scary moments. On DVD/Blu-ray 6/17. Ok for kids 6+. Reel Review: 5 of 5 Reels. Deep below snowy, cobblestone streets, tucked away in networks of winding subterranean tunnels, lives a civilization of hardworking mice, terrified of the bears who live above ground. Unlike her fellow mice, Celestine is an artist and a dreamer – and when she nearly ends up as breakfast for ursine troubadour Ernest, the two form an unlikely bond. But

their friendship is soon put on trial by their respective bear-fearing and mice-eating communities. Gorgeous animation, wonderful storytelling, brilliant comic timing, and on-screen chemistry between the two leads is why this sweet tale was nominated for an Academy Award. It features a ridiculously talented voice cast, including Forest Whitaker, Lauren Bacall and Paul Giamatti. THE LEGO MOVIE Rated PG for mild action and rude humor. On DVD/Blu-ray 6/17. Ok for kids 6+. Reel Review: 5 of 5 Reels. One of my favorite movies of 2014 (read my review here), this animated story follows Emmet (Chris Pratt), a perfectly average, rulesfollowing LEGO figure who’s mistakenly identified as an extraordinary person, not to mention the key to saving the world. Drafted into a fellowship of strangers, he finds himself on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant. It’s a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared. A must-see for both you and your kids, this movie topped $252 million at the box office. JANE’S REEL RATING SYSTEM One Reel – Even the Force can’t save it. Two Reels – Coulda been a contender Three Reels – Something to talk about. Four Reels – You want the truth? Great flick! Five Reels – Wow! The stuff dreams are made of.

EDUCATION

By Sue LeBreton

Pack Literacy on Vacation with You

S

chool may be the farthest thing from your mind when packing for a family vacation but that doesn’t mean learning and literacy need to be left on the shelf at home. Follow these simple steps and your family can strengthen their literacy skills throughout your journey, usually without them knowing you have a learning agenda. When you are planning a family vacation, involve your children in the planning and research stages. This can be especially fun for older children. They can use on line resources to discover interesting facts about the destination and unique things to do when you get there. When we went to Disney I had my son research the various rides so we would have a must do list. Normally a reluctant reader, he was happy to read ride descriptions and take notes.

1.

Research books set in your destination and consider reading one or two as a family. It may offer you a glimpse into the differences between your destination and your home. This can lead to some interesting discussion before and after vacation. Try both fiction and non-fiction books as fiction can also give you a real sense of a place. If you have ever read Stephen King and driven through northern Maine you will see his inspiration. For younger children picture or photo books can help them prepare for a trip to a new place.

2.

For a road trip, download some audio books or borrow a few from your local library so that you can listen as a family. This is a great way to enjoy a story if you are unable to read in a moving vehicle. Persevere through the process as it may take many suggestions before you find a book everyone is happy with. Who knows what gems you may find for reading later when researching? Keep a list for the future.

3.

If you don’t get car sick and are keen to read aloud, you can read to your

12

neafamily.com

June 2014.indd 12

children and the driver while on a road trip. With a print book, as opposed to an audio, it can be less disruptive to the story flow to pause and comment about the story. Joke books provide an engaging, distraction on long trips. Caution: it may also lead to family members trying to compose their own jokes.

4.

Think about packing some MadLibs books. They are stories with blanks so that you can take turns filling in the missing nouns, verbs and adjectives. Results are silly and hysterical. Your children will be too busy laughing to realize they are learning. We once played and allowed our tween to use some risqué words that we do not use at home and it was one of the highlights of the drive.

5.

If you are travelling by plane you might download an audio book and you can each listen individually. If you cannot agree on a book, have each person pick their own title and then see who can convince other family members to read or listen to their choice on the way home. It is great fun to watch children get fired up over “their” book.

6.

Keep reading to your children on vacation. If you are in a hotel on a travel vacation, read the guide book aloud at night so you can all prepare for the next

day’s adventure.

7.

Writing is essential to developing reading skills so consider keeping a family journal on vacation with each person making a daily entry. The younger children can draw the best part of their day. This will make a great memento or you can use it as the inspirational spark for a silly family story that will last longer than the time spent on vacation.

8.

Pack a bag of books for the trip or destination. If you need to pack lightly, consider e books. They are great for travel.

9.

Model reading behavior on vacation; make sure there’s some downtime every day.

10.

Keep a book with you at all times so you can read to the kids while waiting in line. There’s never a reason to hear “I’m bored” when a book is in hand. Sue LeBreton is a health and wellness journalist and mom of two. An avid reader, she uses family vacations as another method to spark her children’s interest in literacy. On a road trip across the prairies they listened to Eragon by Christopher Paolini. NEAPOLITANfamily • June 2014

SUMMER FUN

Y

By Malia Jacobson

Safer Sun for Everyone

ou stocked up on sunscreen, doled out sunglasses and floppy sunhats, and managed to coat your kids in gooey white SPF 30 before hitting the local swimming hole. But they still came home looking like lobsters, moaning and groaning over their painful sunburns. What gives? Sunscreens are now part of most kids’ summer routines, but that doesn’t mean that all kids are perfectly protected. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, sunscreens are often less effective than parents think, because they aren’t applied correctly. And par-

ents sometimes skip protecting dark-skinned children and tiny babies. Here’s how to get the best-possible sun protection for your brood, starting now. Every Kid, Every Day Sun protection isn’t just for freckle-faced, blue-eyed kids, says Adelaide A. Hebert, M.D., professor and director of pediatric dermatology at the University of Texas Health Science Center. The sun doesn’t miss anyone. Sunburns may not be as visible on kids with darker complexions, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need SPF. Children with darker skin need to take the same sun safety precautions as their lighter-skinned pals. Choose Well Staring down the sunscreen aisle at the drug-

store can fluster even the most informed parent. Natural, baby, spray, sweat-proof—each passing year brings new innovations and more confusion. How can parents quickly and easily choose a sunscreen that’s right for their brood? Forget about the multitude of subcategories and formulations, and focus on the two main types of sunscreens: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens like Coppertone actually absorb ultraviolet radiation. Many conventional sunscreens fall into this category. Physical sunblocks like those made by California Baby are made with ingredients that physically block the sun’s rays. They’re becoming increasingly popular with parents seeking a more natural option. So which is best? The safest option, says Hebert, is to use both. Look for a combina-

tion product, like those made by Bull Frog or Helioplex. Or buy two, a conventional sunscreen and a physical sunblock, and layer. Labeling Hype Once you’re in the habit of reading labels, you may notice that formulations marketed for adults and children aren’t all that different. Manufacturers often market the same sunscreen product to both adults and children with different labels, says Hebert. So if your favorite kid’s sunscreen is out of stock, consider a grown-up brand instead. To Spray or Not to Spray Spray sunscreens seem heaven-sent when you’re wrestling with a wiggly, impatient tyke. Not so fast—Hebert says parents using sprays often miss spots or don’t apply enough. “A spray sunscreen is still better than no sunscreen,” she says. “And the sprays are getting better all the time.” But for now, a tube or bottle may be your safest bet. Apply for Benefits To get the full benefit of sunscreen, your application needs to be up to par. Many people don’t use enough, and sun protection is compromised further by water play, toweling off, even windy conditions. For best results, apply every two hours

to clean, dry skin. The best time to apply the first coat is in the morning, when conditions are still cool, because sunblock won’t adhere as well to sweaty skin. Protect Tiny Tots There haven’t been enough studies proving sunscreen safety for babies below six months, so parents often skip protecting them. But infants are still susceptible to sunburns (and few things are worse than a sad, sunburned baby). Babies who spend lots of time outdoors can rack up significant sun exposure, even in the shade. Hebert recommends that parents of young babies look for sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, a common ingredient in diaper creams. If parents are safely using titanium dioxide to treat diaper rash, a sunscreen that containing the same ingredients probably won’t cause an adverse reaction, she says. Made in the Shade Wraparound sunglasses are more than a fashion statement. They offer five percent more protection than regular shades and can reduce sun-induced cataracts if used regularly. Protect your kids’ peepers—and your sunglasses investment—by fastening shades to a strap so they stay on your child and don’t get lost.

Protective Fashion Photoprotective clothing is the next wave of sun protection. Brands like Coolibar, the first line to be certified by the Skin Cancer Foundation, offer clothing that blocks out 97 percent of the sun’s UV rays. These garments are great options, says Hebert, but any tightly woven, dark clothing will protect kids from the sun. To raise the protection factor for regular clothing, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends Rit Sun Guard. This laundry additive washes into fabric, giving clothing an ultraviolet protection factor (UPC) of 30 for at least 20 launderings. On the Nose The area many people miss when applying sunscreen? It’s as plain as the nose on their face. The nose is where dermatologists find most melanomas. “Think about where kids usually get pink—the nose,” says Hebert. So protect that cute sniffer now. Your child will thank you later. MALIA JACOBSON is a nationally published health journalist and mom. SUMMER FUN

9 Things Every Child Should Do This

Summer

T

he lure of slowing down over summer sounded idyllic in the whir of hectic school schedules, but what do you do if your child is already singing the summertime boredom blues? Try filling his dance card with this head-spinning assortment of creative, educational and exhilarating activities. Not only will you fight off boredom, you’ll create plenty of new memories while relaxing, playing and learning together as a family!

Tend a garden. Cultivate containers of herbs, tomatoes or peppers with your children. Take a digital photo each day to track the progress of the plant’s growth. Have your child put the photos in order in a journal and write down any observations. Together, prepare a meal using your child’s homegrown produce. Sleep outdoors. Chris Starnes, a mom of three, says her family loves to camp. They look forward to hiking, biking and swimming and a break from electronics. Want to take your family? Starnes suggests reserving a site at a Florida state park. “State parks are cleaner and well-patrolled and there are usually activities for the kids at some point during the day or weekend,” she says. “Go where there is a playground. And, don’t camp too far from restrooms–think evening or middle of the night trips!” You can get more information • Christian Environment • Certified Teachers • Infant - Pre K Programs • Low Student to Teacher Ratio • Brand New Facility • Creative Curriculum • VPK Provider • Music lessons • Security System • Certified Teachers

about camping at Florida state parks at www.floridastateparks.org/ staythenight/camping.cfm. Stare at the stars. On a clear night, direct your family’s gaze toward the heavens. Try identifying a few of the 88 different constellations, many of which are named after mythological men, women and animals. Is your child interested in learning more about the characters dotting the celestial night sky? Read “D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths” by Ingri and Edgar Parin D’Aulaire. You can also download the free app SkyView from the iTunes store– simply point your iPhone, iPad, or iPod at the sky to identify stars, constellations, satellites, and more. Build and fly a kite. “The experience never fails to fill adults and kids with wonder every time they fly a kite,” says Sean Beaver, a kite enthusiast and father of two. Kite flying is an inexpensive and relaxing activity. Check out the American Kite Association website, aka.kite. org, which provides educational resources, including the history of kites and the science and math behind kite flying.

Go local. Area farmer’s markets offer an assortment of colorful, seasonal produce. There’s no better time to taste locally grown foods and experiment with new recipes in the kitchen with your child. Check out the list of Naples farmers’ market at neafamily.com for suggestions. Cook up a story. Recipes help kids practice math and reading skills, but also try giving cooking a literary twist that will delight even preschoolers. Read a book like “If You Give a Pig a Pancake” by Laura Joffe Numeroff and make pancakes together. An older child who likes “The Little House on the Prairie” series, might enjoy “The Little House Cookbook: Frontier Foods” from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Classic Stories by Barbara M. Walker. Got a Star Wars fan? Check out the “Star Wars Cookbook: Wookie Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes” by Robin Davis.

Birdwatch. Learning about birds local to the area helps children appreciate and build interest in their natural surroundings. Purchase or make a bird feeder to attract birds to your backyard. Use a local bird guide and listen for different bird song to try and identify the birds visiting your yard. Plan hometown field trips. New experiences help kids learn, grow and feel a connection to their community. Check out one of Naples or Ft. Myers museums, explore one or more of our historical landmarks or walk in a neighborhood where you’ve never been. Get online with your child and do a little research on Naples and then plan an activity or two that interests your child. Neafamily.com has information on a wide variety of local attractions and things to do. Take some time this summer to explore! Freelance journalist CHRISTA MELNYK HINES and her family are doing lots of exploring this summer! Christa is the author of Confidently Connected: A Mom’s Guide to a Satisfying Social Life. FATHER’S DAY

By Nicole Flesvig Bruland, PhD

Naples Dad Focuses on Family After the Military

T

his Father’s Day, families will celebrate the love and devotion of the fathers, or father figures in their lives. These days, there are all kinds of dads: married dads, single dads, step-dads, uncles in the role of dad, fathers-in-law, and men who step into the role of dad. Likewise, these devoted family men come from many professional backgrounds. Some have the opportunity to interact with their families on a daily basis, some travel for work, and others are deployed for long periods of time in the military. For military dads, challenges range from being away for long periods of time to difficulties in acclimating to family life upon return from deployment. More often than not, those who have been deployed return

44

with both physical and emotional injuries to overcome, posing additional challenges on an already challenging family life. One Naples family who knows these challenges all too well is the Hernandez family. Like many young military families, the Hernandez family has experienced enough challenges for a lifetime but military dad Brent and his wife Katy, have managed to work through them to find a new normal in Naples. Life changing In early April 2010, Army Sergeant Brent Hernandez was just 13 days into his deployment in Afghanistan when he was seriously wounded. At the time, he was a soldier in the 75th Ranger Regiment, a Special Operations

light infantry elite unit, and had barely begun his mission half way across the world, when the aircraft he had been riding in crashed. In moments, his life and the lives of his family changed forever. Given the injuries he had sustained, collapsed lung, ripped intestine, and traumatic brain injury, he truly was lucky to be alive. Brent’s injuries were so severe that doctors didn’t believe he would survive, but he fought to return to his family... and persevered. As a result of his injuries, Brent struggles daily with debilitating pain along with tinnitus, an often destabilizing ringing in the ears. He also deals with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Brent credits his wife and daughters for giving him the motivation not

only to endure a lengthy rehabilitation process but to conquer the challenges of being a wounded warrior in order to be an engaged husband and father. “It’s definitely a continuous process,” he says. “Every day brings a different struggle but my family keeps me balanced and on my feet.” Being in Naples and close to the beach has helped this young family stay active and involved with one another throughout Brent’s continued rehabilitation. Thanks to Building Homes for Heroes, the Hernandez family not only has a wonderful family home, it’s also adapted to Brent’s physical needs. Since 2006, Building Homes for Heroes has been making a difference in the lives of the severely wounded military men and women by building new homes, and modifying existing homes, to meet the needs of the injured veterans who have selflessly served our country. The homes are mortgage-free– removing a financial burden for the family. Welcoming community Since moving to Naples from Georgia, the Hernandez family has made great friends and adjusted well to their new community. They have family in Miami and Tampa and the great weather has prompted other family members to think about moving to the area. “We truly feel like we are supposed to be here,” Brent says. “It’s a great place and a welcoming community.” In fact, when the Hernandez family arrived at their remodeled Victoria Park home last December, the already-supportive neighborhood welcomed them with cheers and fanfare. For Brent and his family, the gift of a home in Naples has been yet another life-changing experience. It’s a positive one that has enabled him to focus

Naples resident Brent Hernandez credits his wife and two young daughters with giving him the daily motivation needed to overcome his war injuries and move towards a happy future. on being a great dad to daughters Makennah, 5, and Annastyn, 3. When asked about how having been a military dad has affected his parenting, he said that having spent the first few years of his older daughter’s life on deployment has caused him to work hard to make up for lost time. “I’ve been home my youngest daughter’s entire life, but my oldest daughter had to rely on mommy for the first few years, so I’ve had to be patient and consistent in my behavior to build a closer relationship with her.” Brent says that the best thing about being a parent is being able to see how the lessons parents teach their children help mold them into who they become. “It’s an important job,” he says.

Continued recovery Although he no longer does intensive physical therapy, the recovery continues and Brent credits his wife and children for teaching him patience, which is sometimes difficult for people with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury (TMI). “Staying calm can be a daily struggle for any parent,” he notes. “We have to remember not to transfer the anxiety caused by PTSD, or even from demanding careers, to our families.” He says that leading a healthy lifestyle, golfing, and working out have helped him with physical and emotional recovery. “Believe it or not, lots of soldiers play golf for therapy. It teaches patience and being outdoors on a beautiful course is very calming for those of us with PTSD.” Currently, Brent works with Building Homes for Heroes and the Red Sox Foundation-Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base program for veterans with TMI and PTSD. He enjoys spending his time helping others by sharing his story with those who have experienced similar injuries. Having spent three years undergoing physical therapy, Brent has an interest in earning a degree in that field as well as in becoming a personal trainer. He is currently looking at local colleges where he can start classes in the fall. He credits his daughters with giving him the daily motivation to not only recover, but to continue to move forward. “My daughters don’t leave me any time for laying around or feeling sorry for myself,” he says. “They’re my motivation to get up and get going.” Nicole Flesvig Bruland, PhD, is a Naples area educator, writer and mom who enjoys going on adventures with her husband, Bronze, and sons Jacob, 12, and Evan, 8.

FATHER’S DAY

By Sue LeBreton

Choose the Best

Love Language for Father’s Day

H

ow can you ensure that your Father’s Day efforts hit the mark? First, think about how the father figure in your life demonstrates his love for others. According to Dr. Gary Chapman, a marriage counselor and author of “The 5 Love Languages,” all of us have a primary way of expressing and interpreting love. They are: (1) words of affirmation (2) quality time (3) receiving gifts (4) acts of service and (5) physical touch. If your spouse or father’s primary love language is acts of service, no matter how great the present is that you give, it will not delight him as much as if you did something for him like washing his car. At Dr. Chapman’s web site (www.5lovelanguages.com) you can fill out a simple questionnaire to assess your primary method of expressing and interpeting love. You can also do the exercise for your children. The information gleaned can be quite helpful in understanding your spouse and children and in understanding how you can improve they way in which you relate to their style. You’ll also find free study guides at the website. Although some of the information on the site and in Dr. Chapman’s books has a religious basis, it is helpful even if you don’t share the author’s beliefs. Words of Affirmation Words may be spoken or written. If your children are old enough, think about writing a poem (acrostics are fun) to express how you all

feel about him. Tanya Bonham made and framed a Top Ten Reasons My Dad is The Best list. “I put it in my son’s words. Sometimes it was grammatically incorrect, but you could hear his little three-year-old voice while you read it.” Children can also express their love in pictures. Use photos of the kids and dad together to make a collage showing how much they love to spend time with dad. If you make your collage on a larger piece of construction paper and laminate it, you will have a placemat that can remind Dad daily of how much he is loved. Challenge teens to use technology to tell Dad they love him by making a video or slide show. Quality Time Talk to Dad and see what sort of quality time he would most enjoy. Maybe on Father’s Day he wants to do something special on his own or perhaps he wants to make a new memory with the kids. You could sign dad and the kids up for a shared outing in the future. How about golf lessons, tickets to a concert or an outing to a climbing center? Think interactive and novel. Jason deSoto, one of five grown children, has learned over the years that his father is not a fan of gifts. “ He loves to spend Father’s Day hiking, canoeing or simply watching his kids and grandkids participate in activities. So my gift to him is usually organizing a family gathering. He doesn’t need anything material and I know how much he appreciates time with his family.” Receiving Gifts Giving dad a gift is the traditional choice for Father’s Day but it doesn’t have to be expensive. Some of the best gifts are those lovingly made by small hands. Discuss with your kids how to choose a gift based on dad’s interests. Is he sporty? Is he musical? Is he creative? Supplies and equipment for hobbies are always a good bet. Tickets to a sporting event he can attend with the kids might be a winner.

Acts of Service Brainstorm with your children to discover something everyone can do for Dad. Does Dad have a chore you can take over for a day, a week or even a month? Make coupons to offer your services. Consider expanding this idea beyond your family and volunteer together, letting Dad choose the charity. Physical Touch Plan extra hugs and kisses for Dad on his special day. How about offering him a massage, either one at home or a professional one? Make mementos for Dad of those special hands and feet. You can cast foot or hand prints to make garden stones or use fabric paint to create a T-shirt or barbecue apron. Update these items regularly to document your children’s growth. Perhaps you can combine one or more love languages such as a gift and quality time. Anne Marie Healey used this tactic when she arranged a surprise golf weekend for her and her husband. “He had no idea. I had arranged for him to get off work Friday afternoon, for my sister to babysit and hid an overnight bag in the trunk.” Involve your children in the brainstorming and you can expect many creative and fun ideas. Try to tailor your gift to Dad’s love language and do not be afraid to try something wacky and new. SUE LEBRETON is a health and wellness journalist. Her language of love is acts of service so she would prefer that a loved one clean her car instead of buying her a gift. NEAPOLITANfamily • June 2014

Family “Snowbirds” It’s not just the retired who split their time between “up north” and Florida. An increasing number of families are choosing a lifestyle that includes summers in one location and winters in Naples. The LeSages are one family doing exactly that!

S

nowbirds certainly have the life, don’t they? Winters in Naples when our weather is just about perfect, and summers up north, while we swelter down here and our ice cream melts into soup during the five-minute drive home from the grocery store. But it’s not just retirees who are living this double life. Increasingly, families with children are juggling schooling, work and housing as they divide their time between Naples and locales to the north. The LeSages are one such family. Jimmy LeSage launched New Life Hiking Spa in 1978 in Vermont. New Life, based in Killington, Vt., operates during the summer and fall, which allowed Jimmy the flexibility to begin splitting his time between Vermont and Naples in 1997. He married Kathleen, who he met in Naples, in 2003, and the couple continued the bi-annual moves. Kathleen

uses the skills and experience she gained from a career in marketing to promote New Life. New Life is a hiking spa that Jimmy describes as an “all-inclusive, rejuvenating vacation” New Life focuses on healthy eating, exercise, and helping guests make positive lifestyle changes. It has garnered a bucketful of awards and recognitions in three-and-a-half decades, including its recent selection as the #7 spa in the top 100 list of “Spas of America” and has been recognized as one of the top 25 pioneer spas by SpaFinder Wellness. A smooth transition While it may seem as though starting a family would make the snowbird lifestyle more difficult, the early years went smoothly. Kathleen and Jimmy’s son James was born in Vermont in August 2004 and just two months later, the family was back in Naples. In November 2007, daughter LeAnne was born in Naples and six months later the family went back to Vermont. Between 2004 and 2009, the LeSages spent six months in Naples and six months in Vermont. “It was really great living in two places when they were babies and toddlers,” says Kathleen. “It was so nice being able to go for a walk with the stroller without having to deal with mittens and hats. We all traveled together and we had a lot of friends in Naples with kids who were just there for the winter, but as the years go on, everyone who was snowbirds with kids have decided to stay up north.” With James ready to enter school, Kathleen and the children returned to Naples in the fall of 2009, leaving Jimmy in Vermont. Unfortunately, the new plan was not a success. “I had never been in Naples with the kids in August or September and none of my neighbors [also snowbirds] were around. Both the kids and I came down with pneumonia in September and I was there during horrible thunderstorms and very sick with my husband and support 1,500 miles away and no neighbors that I knew.” Then in March, Kathleen’s father passed away, which necessitated time in the Washington, D.C.-area, and so the family decided to try homeschooling. The children were homeschooled until January 2011, when James entered another school in Naples. “Again I found myself in Naples,” recalls Kathleen, “with two small kids and packing to go up to Vermont, and trying to get ready for the New Life season remotely on the internet and Skype. It was too much, so we decided to go to Vermont for the next year.” NEAPOLITANfamily • June 2014

June 2014.indd 49

Once again, life did not proceed as planned. “The kids started school in Vermont and everything was wonderful, but then Irene hit and well, we ended up back in Naples,” explains Kathleen. Hurricane Irene pounded Vermont in August 2011, wiping out roads that cut off several rural towns, including Killington, for more than two weeks. The next two years were a mix of homeschooling and schools in Vermont and Naples for James and LeAnne, but it still meant significant chunks of time apart. Last year, the children started attending a new school in Vermont. “The kids really loved it, and it was the first year they really started talking about how they didn’t want to leave Vermont,” Kathleen says. Moving “does get more difficult with the kids related to schools and friends,” Jimmy notes. A cultural advantage For the LeSage children, being a snowbird is a way of life. “It’s what they know,” Jimmy says. “James was born in August and was on a plane in October. It’s part of their life. Up to this point, they’ve been happy to go. I think they’ve enjoyed it.” The trips to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory in Vermont and the 26 visits to Legoland in Florida may have aided that enjoyment. But the benefits run deeper than ice cream and thrill rides. “It gives the kids a lot of confidence in

dealing with people and adapting,” Jimmy points out. “They’re not sheltered. They’ve really gained a unique education. They get to explore other regions, cultures and people. They’re not provincial. It’s a real cultural advantage.” While she notes that the moves are exhausting, Kathleen has no regrets. “Looking back, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We were able to experience so much as a family and really experience two completely different ways of living. Vermont and Naples are very different places and we have been able to really experience everything in depth … more than when you just go on a vacation somewhere.” Staying together This year, the entire LeSage family moved back to Vermont in March, to prepare for the 2014 New Life season. Jimmy and Kathleen have learned that amidst all of the change, there needs to be one constant: being together. “We made a choice,” Jimmy says. “We found it’s more important to be together as a family and move back and forth, than to be apart and have the kids stay in one place. We’ve always thought that being apart would be harder on them than the move.” Leigh Ann Newmann is the Copy editor of Neapolitan Family Magazine as well as the owner of ABC Swim School. FOR M

SW Florida Summer Fun Outings Check out our 10 suggestions for a summer filled with fun! Go ahead, brave the heat. It may be hot and humid but that’s no reason to stay indoors. There are excellent choices for outdoor fun in Collier County during the summer months. You can head to one of the Collier standbys such as Sun ‘N’ Fun Lagoon or the Golden Gate Aquatic Center. But, if you’re ready for something different, we have 10 suggestions that are easy on the pocketbook and great fun for the entire family.

1.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Slather the kids with sunscreen, pack a few bottles of cold water and head out to Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary for a morning hike. You’ll find a 2.25 mile raised boardwalk that takes visitors through four environments: a pine upland, a wet prairie, a cypress forest, and a marsh. Interpretive signs along the boardwalk and a field guide and children’s activity book (available at the admissions desk in the Blair Center) allow each visitor to take the self-guided tour. Benches and rain shelters are along the trail. There is an optional trail shortening the walk to one mile. Wildlife sightings vary depending on the time of year, the weather, and even the time of day. Birds, reptiles, mammals, insects, and a variety of native plants including wild orchids may be seen from the boardwalk. Due to natural predators such as fish and dragon-

flies, mosquitos are not a great nuisance in the swamp. Parents should keep in mind that no refreshments are available and nothing but water can be taken onto the boardwalk. 75 Sanctuary Road West, Naples (239) 348-9151 www.corkscrew.audubon.org Open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Admission: $10 adult; $4 for 6-18; Free for under 4

2.

Collier Seminole State Park Collier Seminole State Park is just a short drive down 41 but once you arrive, you’ll feel very far from Naples. The park features a wealth of vegetation and wildlife typical of the Everglades, plus a forest made up of tropical trees. Although rare elsewhere, the Florida

royal palm is a common tree here. The park is the site of a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, the Bay City Waking Dredge. Built in 1924, it was used to build the Tamiami Trail highway (U.S. 41) through the Everglades. Hiking, bicycling, and canoeing trails offer opportunities for visitors to explore the park’s remarkable wilderness. The park has canoe rentals along with a boat ramp that provides access to the Blackwater River, where anglers can enjoy both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Campers can spend the night in a fullfacility campground; youth/group and primitive campsites are also available. The picnic areas have pavilions and grills for use on a first-come-first served basis. Bring a picnic lunch and a cooler filled with drinks and you’ll be set for a day filled with fun.

Shelling Spending the day at the beach is always enjoyable but spending a few hours shelling is even more fun. The various shells and other items found along Naples’ shores include conches, whelks, scallops, and Florida sand dollars. If you haven’t done any serious shelling there are a few pointers to keep in mind: • Plan your shelling around the low phase of the tide, which allows more beach area in which to shell. • The best place to shell is the “shell line,” where the highest waves stop as they come upon the beach. This is where groups of shells come up and are reshuffled by each wave. • The peak shelling season on Collier County beaches is May through September. • Picking up shells that still have live creatures inside is illegal. Give each child an inexpensive mesh bag that will allow the sand and water to run through and let them loose. You can find a variety of educational activities on the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum web site at shellmuseum.org. You will also find a photo page of local shells that can be printed out and carried with you for your search. If you find that your family really enjoys the outing you may want to visit the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum on Sanibel Island. Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum 3075 Sanibel-Captiva Road, Sanibel Island (888) 679-6450 www.shellmuseum.org Admission: $7 for adults and $4 for children 5 through 16

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida The Conservancy of Southwest Florida offers the perfect blend of indoor and outdoor fun and the biggest draw is the convenience of its central Naples location. Experience the sea life touch tank and Florida panther habitat exhibit in the Discovery center, stroll down the nature path, or cruise the Gordon River on a guided electric boat tour. It’s all included in the admission price. If your children are older, you may want to rent kayaks for a reasonable additional fee. 1450 Merihue Drive, Naples (239) 262-0304 Open Monday-Saturday 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission: $9 for adults; $4 for children 3-12; free for children under 3 Hourly electric boat rides are available from 10 a.m.-noon daily

5.

Sugden Park This waterfront park on the East Trail has a great view of Lake Avalon plus a sunbathing “beach”, and is a nice alternative to the gulf beaches for an afternoon outing. Your family can walk, roller blade or cycle around the path, rent a kayak or paddleboat, and enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch in the gazebo. Park admission is free. Paddleboats and kayaks are an additional fee. Collier County Parks & Recreation offer sailing classes throughout the summer. Check www.colliergov.net for additional information as well as a list of special programs offered at the park. 4284 Avalon Drive, Naples (239) 254-4000 Open from 8:00 a.m. to dusk daily

6.

Naples Museum of Art A museum visit may not be your first thought when choosing summer activities for your family, but think again. Even little ones in strollers enjoy the bright colors of the artwork and it’s never too early to start teaching your kids about art. The Naples Museum of Art is a 30,000 square-foot structure with 15 galleries and pieces by world-renowned artists including glass artist Dale Chihuly. It’s a quiet, cool spot that offers an opportunity for reflection, inspiration and learning. Plan on attending the museum on one of the “Make and Take Workshop” days and the family can learn about a featured exhibition and create a piece of art inspired by the exhibit.

5833 Pelican Bay Blvd., Naples (239) 597-1900 www.thephil.org/museum Admission: $8 for adults; $4 for children The museum is closed during July and September

7.

Collier County Museum The Collier County Museum is a bit of an undiscovered resource for most Neapolitans. Most of us know it’s there but few of us take the time to uncover its treasures. Admission is free so it’s perfect for short, frequent visits. The Exhibition Hall is located on the five-acre complex that is home to native Florida gardens, two historic cottages, a working archeology lab, a Seminole village, tropical orchid house, wildlife displays, a 1910 logging locomotive, and a Seminole War fort. The Hall offers artifact displays, audio visual programs, and three-dimensional dioramas that take visitors on a self-guided tour of local history and explain the people, places, and events that shaped Collier County. The Naples Cottage is a real treat for kids, giving them a glimpse of family life in early Collier County. 3301 Tamiami Trail East, Naples (239) 774-8476 Open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Admission is free but donations are accepted.

8.

Saturday Morning Project Workshops It’s Saturday morning and you’re searching for a few hours of fun for the kids. Look no further than the free workshops offered by The Home Depot and Lowe’s. The Home Depot offers a workshop on the first Saturday of each month. The workshops are free for children ages 5-12 from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety. Plus, it’s fun one-on-one time with a parent. The child takes home the project plus a kid-sized apron. Lowe’s offers monthly “Build and Grow Clinic” for children from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Home Depot 2251 Pine Ridge Road, Naples, (239) 597-1515 11941 Bonita Beach Road, SE (239) 947-5868 1651 South Airport Road, Naples, (239) 793-2203 www.homedepot.com Lowe’s neafamily.com

Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center Located at the northern end of the Ten Thousand Islands on the gulf coast of Florida, the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve represents one of the few remaining undisturbed mangrove estuaries in North America. An amazing world exists within the 110,000 acres of pristine mangrove forest, uplands, and protected waters of Rookery Bay. A wide variety of wildlife, including 150 species of birds and many threatened and endangered animals, thrive in the estuarine environment and surrounding upland hammocks and scrub. The Environmental Learning Center is a 16,500 square-foot facility with four research laboratories, classrooms and 140-seat auditorium, and a two-story visitor center. The visitor center offers a variety of handson experiences, including a 2,300-gallon aquarium and interactive exhibits, as well as a nature store, gallery and picnic area. “Kids Free Friday” is a summer education program providing free admission

for children ages 12 and younger who are accompanied by an adult ($5, free for members). Educators will present a different topic each week. 300 Tower Road, Naples (239) 530-5940 Open Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed Saturdays May - October). Parking is free. Overnight parking not permitted. Admission: $5 for adults; $3 for children 6-12; free for children under 6. 10. Collier County Library Story Times and Special Events If you haven’t been to your branch library lately, it’s time for a visit. Collier County is blessed with an excellent library system and the staff does a terrific job of presenting story times and special events. There are seven locations in Naples as well as branches in Immokalee, Marco Island, and Everglades City. The 2014 Summer Reading Program begins June 2 and ends July 28. “Fizz Boom Read” is designed for children entering kindergarten through fifth grade who are able to read independently. “Spark A Reaction”

is for teens entering grades 6 through 12. To participate (and earn prizes), students register at a branch library and then record books they’ve read. Check out the program online at www.collierlibrary.org.

Use one of our suggestions each weekend and you’ll have enough low-cost, fun activities to keep your family busy all summer. You’ll not only keep the kids entertained but you’ll also be spending quality time together. And, we could all use a little more of that!

Common Wisdom

Be kind to people and animals too. Laugh a lot. Just tell the truth. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon. Clean up your own mess. Wish upon a star. Please your dentist and floss your teeth. Read a good book – or two (and read to a child!). Good health is priority #1. Lend a hand. Give blood. Call your mom and dad, or kids. Take the dog for long walks and smile at who you meet. Be a friend. Don’t drink and drive. Let art color your life. Be gentle with the earth. Cut the drama and don’t go to extremes. Never look back unless you are planning to go there. Be thankful. "A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty."
