THIS MONTH Summer Camp What a long, strange year it’s been, right? This time last year, we had just delivered a summer camp issue full of ... canceled camps, canceled Easter events, and everything else that came to a screeching halt. We couldn’t even imagine what the next year would be like. Life as we came to know it had never even occurred to most people as a possibility. We grieved our losses, we hunkered down, and we grew. Our children grew, too. This year, we have finally returned to summer planning time with a renewed sense of hope, and a new appreciation for summer camp. Starting on page 13, we have compiled our annual summer camp guide, which includes a variety of programs and activities for all ages and abilities. You probably don’t disagree that your children need camp this year more than ever, but in our article on page 28, we have some reasons you may not have thought of before. In a year full of anxiety, divisiveness, and uncertainty, camp provides the face-to-face connections to people, nature, and the skills that children need to grow. We hope you find this issue helpful when you are planning your best summer, ever! Happy Easter and Earth Day!

Immokalee Community School Principal Wins Leadership Award

Z

ulaika Quintero, principal of the Redlands Christian Migrant Association’s Immokalee Community School (ICS), has received the Florida’s Principal Leadership Award, one of just three principals statewide to be honored. Established by the Florida Tax Watch in 2014, this award honors Florida’s most effective principals in high-risk K-12 public schools and promotes their transformational practices to improve student achievement. The Florida Tax Watch program analyzes student performance data over several consecutive years, and the results are weighted to find those principals making a difference in the lives of their students. This award recognizes Quintero for her dedication and innovation in transforming students’ lives. “Ms. Quintero operates with vision, transparency, and a deep understanding that every student can succeed,” said Kamela Patton, superintendent of Collier County Public Schools. “I congratulate her on this well-deserved honor.” Quintero has served at Immokalee Community School since 2011. As Collier County’s only dual language public school, ICS is tuition-free and open to all children living in migrant and low income communities. The school utilizes dual language immersion and foreign language instruction to develop basic skill acquisition and literacy in both English and Spanish languages during kindergarten

Lovensky Germain Named Youth of the Year 2021

T

he Boys & Girls Club of Collier County announced Lovensky Germain as its 2021 Youth of the Year, honoring the Naples teen for his achievements at the club, in the classroom, and around the community. Germain is a senior at Mason Classical Academy. “Lovensky is a perfect representative for the values that the Boys & Girls Club promotes, like leadership, character, academic excellence, and community service,” said Megan McCarthy Beauvais, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County. “Like many of our students, Lovensky has faced obstacles, but his achievements show that perseverance, a good attitude, and guidance from dedicated mentors can put any youth on the right trajectory in life.” Though just a teen himself, Germain understands that he is seen and heard by younger students, and embraces being a role model. “I want to be the person a child looks up to when they feel like they can’t go on any longer,” said Germain, who was a Youth of the Year finalist in 2020. “I want to show children that no matter where you came from, you can achieve the great things which you desire through hard work and perseverance.” Visit https://BGCCC.com or call 239-325-1700.

From Teacher to Pageant Queen, and the Lessons in Between

M

elissa Born is a second grade teacher at Sabal Palm Elementary School. She’s also the current Mrs. Florida Universal and received second runner-up and Mrs. Congeniality in this year’s Mrs. USA Universal pageant. Her time and experience in the circuit led to important lessons for her students. “Congeniality means being friendly and being kind,” stated Born in a recent video shared with students. “At the pageant, when I got voted [Mrs. Congeniality], that showed me that I was being my best self and being kind and helpful to others. As Hawks, we need to remember to be kind to our classmates, to be kind to our teachers, to help at all times, and to just be the best version of ourselves that we can be.”

party at home for family, including Born’s husband and children. With her family’s support and the positive character traits she demonstrated along the way, Born was chosen as second runner-up and Mrs. Congeniality at the Mrs. USA Universal competition. “I’m always trying to help people,” she said. “I will put myself out to help somebody else. I feel like I showed that there and I helped the girls. I was kind. I helped others. And those are all things we are teaching our students and our children every day.”

Until recently, Born’s pageant experience consisted only of the local Swamp Buggy Queen Scholarship Pageant in high school. (She lost to her sister and instead became the Swamp Buggy mascot!) The very next year, Born competed again. While she didn’t take home the Swamp Buggy Queen title, she was crowned Miss Congeniality.

One of the reasons Born chose to compete in the pageant was to raise awareness of the importance of youth sports. Her boys play football for the Naples Bears while she serves as vice president of the youth football and cheer organization. “Research shows that when kids are active in sports, they benefit physically, mentally, and socially. We are fortunate here that we have schools open and we have sports. Kids need that social interaction. They need the discipline. They need the accountability. They need to know how to work as a team. They need to know how to accept failure. And when you’re involved in a sport, whether it’s an individual sport or a team sport, you’re learning all of those things just by participating.” She also noted that kids who play youth sports and are active excel academically. “When students come back from PE or recess, their minds are more open to learning.”

“They were all so supportive,” said Born when asked about the moment she told her family she was going to enter into Mrs. Florida Universal. When she learned she was chosen, her first thought was, “Oh goodness … this is it!” She was going to the national stage for Mrs. USA Universal. Born’s mother accompanied her on the trip to Colorado, while her sister held a watch

As Born has shown, life lessons gained through youth sports and messages of kindness are to be valued. “Even if you’re an adult, you’re still looked at to be kind and to be helpful and to be your best self toward everybody. That’s not something you just need to do in school as a child. That’s something that you need to be doing throughout your life.”

Born, a Naples native, met her husband, Michael, at Corkscrew Middle School the first year it opened. They began dating at the end of that year and eventually went on to marry and have three children.

SUMMER CAMP

By Catherine Menendez

Why Summer Camp Is Even More Vital for 2021 and Beyond

T

he events of 2020 had a significant global impact, especially on those who will experience their long-term aftermath: children and adolescents. While processing this is important, it is essential to begin to shift our mental energy forward. How can we prepare for the future? How do we keep young people healthy and safe, yet also ensure that they are growing emotionally, physically, and relationally? How can we take inventory of children’s education, relationships, and general activity in order to set them up for developmental success moving forward? As a mental health professional who works in the camping industry, I am convinced that summer camp is no 28

neafamily.com

longer an optional add-on to enrich a child’s experience while they are out of school. It is a vital need for all children and adolescents in 2021 and beyond. 1. Camp provides a forced sabbatical from technology and screens. There has been a marked rise in screen usage amongst all ages for obvious and essential reasons. While technology has been crucial in allowing work, education, and connection to continue, studies have shown that screen time negatively impacts mental health over the long haul, especially in children. Using screens as a primary means

of relational connection during key periods of childhood development is particularly alarming. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we strategically and consciously create space for young people to move their bodies, be outside, and connect face-to-face with peers. Camps are one of the only contexts that provide this pivotal combination for extended amounts of time: authentic connection with others in an outdoor, technology-free context. 2. Camp creates community, not polarization. During an election year that already NEAPOLITANfamily • April 2021

would have been fraught with political tension, the added effects of COVID-19 (isolation, increased social media usage) only heightened polarization; feelings of division and hostility are as present as the air we breathe. Social hierarchies and divisions that may exist in other spheres of life are not present at summer camp because of two key elements: staff who model acceptance and kindness, and the shared connection of trying (and perhaps failing) at something new, away from the loving (yet often stifling) gaze of parents. Cabin mates whose families may vote differently, look differently, and think differently from one another will still become friends for life at summer camp. Healthy, deep friendships inherently welcome and hold space for differences; learning how to make and maintain these relationships is both pivotal for development and challenging to see modeled in the current climate. Camp is one of the few spaces where life in the community prevails over all else.

Cabin mates whose families may vote differently, look differently, and think differently from one another will still become friends for life at summer camp. 3. Camp fosters imagination and free play. Finally, in a world where most activity and social interaction is necessarily and increasingly structured for health and safety precautions, camp offers the gift of freedom. At summer camp, children participate in the imaginative, free play that is so crucial for development. Activities at camp are inherently playful: Staff and campers alike sing, run, dance, and create. The Project Zero Team at Harvard created a research initiative titled The Pedagogy of Play, which focused on play as a key element of learning. In this project, the team identified choice, wonder, and delight as “indicators of playful learning.” These elements exist in abundance at summer camp: Campers are able to learn independence by making their own choices and taking on responsibility, engage with nature in a way that stirs up awe and wonder, and experience the delight that comes from jumping off a rope swing or belly laughing with a friend at a meal. While health and safety precautions undoubtedly are in full force at summer camp, imagination and creativity are in every nook and cranny. Author J.R.R. Tolkien writes in his famous novel, The Hobbit: “It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.” We must notice the “dragon” that has been this past year; however, we cannot spend our time only noticing – we must strategically calculate and prepare, as Tolkien writes. Moving forward, summer camps must be an indispensable element of this preparation as we seek to help children grow into healthy, empathetic, confident adults.
