FLYING with WILD HORSES "At first glance he thought he spotted birds and more flats, but to his amazement it was more wild horses, about 10 of them, swimming through the deep water coming from other islands."

STORY BY // William D. Flannery

While it's known as "The End Of The Earth" to some, many locals, including William Flannery, appreciate the natural beauty that can be found here. "Had one of the most incredible experiences of my life yesterday at Cedar Island. I Arrived at Cedar Island's kite spot around 10:30 am and was the only one there. Rigged up and had the whole place to myself riding nice small 3-4ft sound surf. Wind N at 25 plus with my waterproof mp3 cranking music

by Jamie Cullum. About an hour later Harry Linwood Caison and his wife showed up and ripped the place to shreds. Harry rides better toe side on his Jimmy Lewis FRad then most people do regular and mega boosts and backrolls onto wave faces. It's just fun to watch. I decided to take break from the waves and make some 2-3 mile speed runs along the butter flats in just a few inches of water and across the little inlet to the other islands. There were Lots of gulls and pelicans. I was going so fast my boards was lines were whistling. Then

I rode back and changed out my kite for a smaller 10 meter as the wind picked up. Eric Kindle arrived soon after. I hardly ever ride without my close friend and personal paramedic, we're the lucky ones that ride 12 months a year in all conditions and know if each other's having a bad day if we skip beat in the rigging process. I've seen him do hundreds of backrolls and land them perfectly toeside, megaboost sick jumps over islands and push the limits in waves filled with sharks. I was really glad he

was there for what happened next. We rode the waves a while near the launch. After an hour, my legs needed a break so I peeled off back to the flats just as a really great song came on my earphones. I just locked in and blasted down the island chain. I kept going and going taking off on a little adventure, thinking I can always walk or swim back. I thought that it might even be cool to walk back along the beach at night from all the way down the island. About 4 miles down the beach I saw a heard of incredibly beautiful wild horses, about 20 of them. I was still hundreds of yards away and this stallion begins to run. Seconds later, the herd followed. I closed the distance quick to get a better view and quietly rode alongside as they galloped down the beach. From time to time, they would step into the shallow water which is only inches deep. I turned back to see E close behind only to see him suddenly peel off shore and further down the island chain. I was thinking "wow we are already 5 miles away from the launch, where's he going?". At first glance he thought he spotted birds and more flats, but to his amazement it was more wild horses, about 10 of them, swimming through the deep water coming from other islands. I turned and followed and we kited around and watched them swim. I guess they were cold because they got onto the beach they started sprinting for miles back towards our launch. Our viewpoint was at the same speed, in incredible butter-flat conditions and depowered on our small kites due to the wind. Our speed was about as fast as wild horses run and man can they run. To see these truly wild horses run along the beach and through shallow water following their stallion was an truly powerful and amazing experience. These island runs for miles with beautiful dunes and raised waterfront with hunting and fishing cabins dotting the shoreline. Cedar island is a magic place where the sounds breaks on long shoals and the wind pumps NE. The ride down 35-45 minutes back to Beaufort is beautiful especially at sunset. I love North Carolina. We are so lucky to live and kite here.

Here at Realty World – First Coast Realty, we understand the importance of helping our community. Our “Dogs For A Cause” community event is geared towards providing a free hot dog lunch (all the fixin’s with a bag of chips and a bottle of water) in hopes of collecting donations for the community.

The Purpose We are striving to provide adequate access to our beaches by incorporating beach access mats that will allow everyone, especially those confined to wheelchairs, families using strollers and others who have mobility restrictions to experience our coast.

The Goal Our goal is to collect a total of $5,800 in donations so that we can purchase the access mats and place them at the Atlantic Beach main beach access on the east side of Davis’ Beachwear. If you would like to make a donation, you can stop by the office or you can mail a check to: Realty World – Special Account P.O. Box 2829 407 Atlantic Beach Causeway Suite. 1A Atlantic Beach, NC 28512

BENEFITS OF LIVING LANDSCAPES

BEYOND CURB APPEAL AS A SELLER

you already know that beautiful landscaping improves curb appeal. Your yard produces the first impression of your home to potential buyers. In a rush to save water, especially in drier areas, many damaging programs have been introduced encouraging people to “rip out” their lawns. Some homeowners have even been subjected to drought-shaming. While these efforts may be well-intentioned, they dramatically undermine one of our most fundamental and important ecological systems: the all-American yard. So before you take drastic steps to replace, rip out or deaden your landscaping consider this. Living landscapes – grass, shrubs, trees and plants – are not only good for curb appeal. They also benefit the environment and our health.

How do Living Landscapes Benefit Homeowners?

What’s important is having the right yard for the lifestyle potential buyers aspire to, combined with the right grasses, trees and plants for your climate.

REDUCES ENERGY COSTS.

SEQUESTERS CARBON.

Planting the right lawn, trees and plants makes your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Turfgrass is the biggest carbon sink in the country, and lawns sequester more carbon than it takes to maintain them. 4

IMPROVES QUALITY OF LIFE. Without grass, your outdoor dining area, barbecue, fire pit and other outdoor living areas will be hotter and less enjoyable. Plus, greenspace reduces stress and makes kids smarter. 1 PRODUCES OXYGEN. Just 50 square feet of turfgrass produces enough oxygen to meet the daily needs of a family of four.2 REDUCES RUNOFF. Grassy areas mitigate storm water runoff, slowing and absorbing it, while also cleansing water of impurities and dust.3

PROTECTS TREES. If you stop watering your lawn, your trees don’t get water either, leading them to dry out and become vulnerable to disease and pests. Losing mature trees not only hurts the urban ecosystem, it also can cause local temperatures to rise and home values to drop.5 Source: The Washington Post, http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/ wp/2015/06/15/why-green-spaces-are-good-for-your-kids-brain/?postshare=3751434485282465

easy feta dip

Total Time: 25 mins: Prep: 25 min

Compliments of The Girl Who At Everything

INGREDIENTS about â…“ cup olive oil 3 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced 4-5 green onions, sliced thinly 8 ounces feta cheese, crumbled (see Note) 2-3 teaspoons Cavender's Greek seasoning fresh baguette, sliced thinly (optional) balsamic vinegar

DIRECTIONS On a large platter drizzle olive oil until you have a thin layer on the entire platter. You may use more or less here depending on your preference. Add the tomatoes, green onions, and feta on top of the olive oil. Sprinkle with the Greek seasoning to taste.

With a spoon carefully combine the ingredients. We found that we like a little drizzle of balsamic vinegar on top. If desired, drizzle a little balsamic on top. Serve with warm sliced baguettes for scooping up the dip.
