ELCOME TO THE 2014 FORTUNA RODEO WEEK. AS YOU CAN SEE, WE HAVE A WEEK PACKED FULL OF INEXPENSIVE fun and excitement for the whole family. For 93 years the friendly city of Fortuna has been hosting the Fortuna Rodeo and our community is proud of the ongoing traditions, established back in 1921. This year we honor Albert and Betty Hunt as the Grand Marshalls of the Fortuna Rodeo. Al and Betty have lived and ranched in Humboldt County all their lives, as have their families for genera-
tions. Please join me in congratulating them for their many contributions to this place we call home. As always the Fortuna Rodeo would not be possible without a concerted effort between the Fortuna Rodeo Association, Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, Fortuna Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fortuna. J
IM MCVICKER CAME TO HUMBOLDT COUNTY TO VISIT A FRIEND IN 1977 AND NEVER LEFT. McVicker credits his move to Humboldt with his transition from abstract to more representative artwork. In the past 40 years he’s garnered a reputation for his Humboldt County landscapes, the fine brushwork and unique palettes of which capture the elusive light found in our fog-shrouded forests and pastoral hills. His still lifes and portraits are equally arresting, with a use of color that bring to mind some of the Old Masters, including Velasquez, whom McVicker reveres. He met his wife Terry, also a painter, in 1984, and the two built a house together on Singley Hill, near Loleta. He can often be seen perched at the edge of the road with his easel, painting the rolling hills of the Eel River Valley. The painting commissioned by the Fortuna

Rodeo presented a unique challenge for McVicker, who actually hadn’t been to a rodeo prior to the assignment. He and Terry visited last year and took many pictures. He was intrigued by the athleticism of the animals and cowboys, and initially painted the scene in watercolor help capture the fluid movement of the horse. The final piece was done in McVicker’s customary oils, and is one of the only paintings commissioned by the Rodeo not to feature clearly defined faces on its subjects. I
T’S PROBABLY JUST AS WELL THAT THE FORTUNA RODEO DOESN’T HAVE A CONTEST FOR CUTEST COUPLE, BECAUSE ALBERT AND BETTY HUNT WOULD LEAVE THE competition in the dust. The pair, who have been married for 66 years, were originally introduced in 1948 on a blind date orchestrated by Albert’s cousin. And was the date a success? Did he have second thoughts? “Hell no!” says Albert automatically, chuckling. On first acquaintance, you might mistake Al as the laconic type, with his broad suspenders, weatherbeaten hat and poker face. But then he comes out of left field with a one-liner, his face breaks into an easy grin and the illusion is gone.
Al Hunt is a card. And Betty — with her dark, sparkling eyes and carefully color-coordinated clothing — is his match. “Sure, but it took you three years to make up your mind,” she retorts back, “You only asked me to marry you because you thought I was going to choose someone else.” “That’s right,” says Al, “I stole her from a cop. A highway patrolman.” The two laugh. They’ve already said they have no idea why they were selected as grand marshals for this year’s rodeo, an honor that includes leading Saturday’s Rodeo Parade. Shannon McWhorter, president of the rodeo board, knows they’re just being modest. “The Hunts have ranched in Humboldt County for generations,” says McWhorter. “They’ve made many, many contributions to continued on pg. 13

our community.” Indeed, Albert Hunt’s father was instrumental in starting the rodeo, along with McWhorter’s grandfather, in 1921. Betty, whose maiden name is Fulton, was raised on a ranch in Kneeland, and it was only after the two started courting that they discovered their grandparents had actually owned neighboring ranches in the Arcata Bottoms just “a pasture apart.” After the pair married they moved to Bridgeville, where they worked for Albert’s father on the Sunny Basin ranch. They bought the Baker Creek ranch in 1967, where they worked side by side, raising cattle, sheep

You can tell he still loves to get her goat. Betty is optimistic about her prognosis. “There are good days and there are bad days. I think things are going to get better.” The Hunts will be spending the Fourth of July at the family ranch, one of two annual gatherings that will include their nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. It will also include Dot, Albert’s faithful terrier, whom Betty calls “the dog from hell.” Dot has a spot on her ear and a spot on her tail, and Albert claims that if the rest of the family had their way she’d be left on the side of the road. “They don’t like her because she’s smarter than them,” he says with his customary soft chuckle. Betty shoots him a sweetly exasperated look. It’s a familiar argument, you can tell, but one nobody really wants to end.

RING YOUR RAINCOAT, BECAUSE YOU MIGHT NEED IT AT THE FIREMEN’S RODEO ON THURSDAY NIGHT. THIS EVENT IS HOSTED BY THE FORTUNA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT AND BRINGS FIRE DEPARTMENTS FROM across the county together for some friendly competition and camaraderie. Each department will show its skills at a variety of firefighting challenges. It’s a fast paced night with lots of excitement. Hose laying, bucket brigades and target shooting are a few of the events. The fastest and most accurate teams are declared the winners and will brag about it for the next year. Most of these departments are made up of volunteers who give their time for the benefit of us all. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer firefighter, give your local department a call. The Fortuna Rodeo Board salutes all the firefighters for their service to the community. ✪

R
ODEO SEASON IS A NON-STOP SERIES OF WEEKENDS FROM APRIL THROUGH SEPTEMBER, AND THE FORTUNA Rodeo is a favorite stop for many CCPRA families. “Cowboys are always on the road,” says Shannon McWhorter, President of the Fortuna Rodeo Board, “They’ll be going from one arena to the next every day. With Fortuna a good 6 to 7 hours away from the rest of the rodeo schedule, they have a chance to relax and make it kind of a vacation.” A few years ago the rodeo board shook things up in an effort to boost attendance and make the rodeo more family friendly. The result was a weeklong event with free activities for the kids — what McWhorter calls “more bang for your buck.” The event has become a favorite among CCPRA contestants, leading to Fortuna’s nomination by the CCPRA as “Rodeo Board of the Year.”
McWhorter adds that the relatively cooler temperatures of the North Coast may contribute to Fortuna’s popularity. The 100-plus temperatures found in Southern California’s host cities are especially hard to withstand when you’re sitting on top of an ill-tempered, 2-ton bronc or bull. The CCPRA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the sport. Card-holding CCPRA members include representatives from every aspect of the sport imaginable: cowboys, cowgirls, clowns, secretaries, fair managers, timers, announcers and performers. The contestants at CCPRA rodeos vie for about $500,000 in prize money each year, with the season culminating in the coronation of the state rodeo queen and the finals championship, to be held in Corning, Calif., on Oct. 3 and 4 of this year. ✪

F YOU’RE SPORTING A FANCY BELT BUCKLE, YOU’D BEST UNDO IT AND GIVE YOURSELF A FEW EXTRA NOTCHES. RODEO FOLK TAKE THEIR GRUB SERIOUS, AND IT’S A GOOD THING, TOO. IT TAKES A FEW EXTRA calories to keep you going through all of the fun activities this weekend has in store! On Saturday at 7 a.m., the Fortuna Kiwanis club will be taking the Rohner Park Cook Shack by storm, serving up a hearty pancake breakfast with sausage, ham, orange juice and lots of good, strong coffee on the side. The community breakfast has been part of the Fortuna Rodeo tradition for more than two decades. Longtime Kiwanis volunteer Ken Wrede says that they expect to serve about 500 people on Saturday morning, all on the picnic benches just outside the rodeo arena. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12 — a bargain! Proceeds will go on to benefit the Kiwanis’ many great community efforts, including scholarship funds, helping out local sports teams and literacy projects. Wrede says that, at no additional cost, he is willing to show you how to make both a “Mickey Mouse pancake” and the very tricky “Target Pancake.” Now who can turn that down? Saturday’s rodeo action starts at noon. If you’re not still full from breakfast, make sure to stop by the concession stand inside the rodeo grounds helmed by the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department’s Women’s Auxiliary. With local caterer Julie Winburn (owner of Moonlight Catering) in charge of the menu, you can’t go wrong! Finally, on Sunday, the big event. Barbecue.
Not some city slicker’s version of barbecue where a couple of chicken wings are slapped on a propane grill. No, real slow-cooked pit barbecue. The kind that takes days to prepare and months to plan. Veteran Rodeo Board Member, volunteer firefighter and barbecue connoisseur Dave Nicholson handed me the shopping list for this year’s feast: 2,800 pounds of beef, 45 gallons of beans, 2,000 rolls, 60 gallons of potato salad and 38 cases of Jello salad. That’s just the shopping list — the work is a whole other story. The feat of feeding 1,900 people is pulled off by a dedicated team of volunteers mostly made up from the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department. They work in shifts and crews to help the food make the journey from the pit to your mouth. First, the seasoning crew gathers at the fire station at 7 a.m. on Saturday, a full day before the big event. They season and repack the meat, then put it back in the refrigerator. At 4 p.m. on Saturday, the fire is lit at Rohner Park, with wood added each hour until around 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., when grates are installed above the coals. Meat is carefully piled in and the pits are covered. The crew is able to leave at 2 a.m., only to return four hours later to begin set up. The pits are uncovered at 10:45 a.m. Serving starts at 11 a.m. ($15 a plate), but we suggest getting there early because there’s definitely going to be a line. Take a minute to give your local volunteer firefighter a pat on the back. ✪

INDING AFFORDABLE ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN BE A CHALLENGE, BUT THE FORTUNA RODEO HAS YOU COVERED. THE EVENT HAS A LONG TRADITION OF PROVIDING FREE ACTIVITIES for the kids, thanks to the generous sponsorships of Lithia Chrysler Dodge, Bear River Casino and other community businesses. On Tuesday, July 14, all the action is happening at the Redwood Village Shopping Center. There will be activities for a wide age range: wax hands, a free bounce house, free face painting, free horse rides by Korobi Stables, a free candy walk, demonstrations by HealthSPORT and the Cobra and Butterfly martial arts studio, sidewalk chalk and (last but not least) a fireman’s muster! Dress your offspring in their finest duds, because at 7:15 p.m. there will be a Western-themed costume contest. (Event registration is at 6:30 p.m.) If the kids are ready for another round of fun, take them down to Main Street between 6 and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15 for street games sponsored by Fortuna Ace Hardware. Activities will include a stick horse Race, a climbing wall, face painting, the egg toss, a bounce house, dummy roping and the ever-popular Tony Johnston Penny Scramble. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided by the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department’s muster team.
The Junior Rodeo kicks off on Thursday, July 17 at 9 a.m., with young competitors from all over the state vying for six All-Around Champion Trophy saddles, 28 trophy buckles and prizes to fifth place awarded to top point earners at the end of the twoday event. The Junior Rodeo has the highest cash paybacks in Northern California. Admission to the Junior Rodeo is $3 for adults and $1 for the kids. Just outside the rodeo arena, the carnival will be getting started at high noon. Ride the Zipper, win a teddy bear or just get a cotton candy and watch the kids scream. The carnival goes on through Sunday, July 20, and all-day wristbands are available for $25. Finally, nobody’s going to want to miss this year’s parade, which starts at noon on Saturday, July 19 from Fortuna’s Main Street. The theme this year is “Ranching, Farming, Rodeos: A Family Tradition.” Let’s hope your family tradition includes getting there early for a good seat, because the sidewalks are traditionally packed with people. The decorated floats will be competing for the $200 dollar prize. Expect music, pageantry, horses, flags and a whole lot of fun! ANDS, BULLS, AND BREWS RETURNS FOR ITS SECOND YEAR ON SATURDAY NIGHT! IF YOU’RE UNFAMILIAR with this new tradition, pull your cowboy hat down a little tighter. Yes, we said hold onto your hat, because the rodeo committee has lined up an extraordinary evening of entertainment complete with a wide selection of local microbrews. The rodeo grounds will be alive with the sounds of heels hitting the floor, glasses clinking and crowds roaring. First, kicking off at 7 p.m. Saturday, cowboy musicians the Bill Jones Band will be getting your boots scooting to some real old-time country music. The band, which combines the vocal and guitar stylings of former pro team-roper Bill Jones and local musicians Ranch Party, doesn’t “play anything newer than George Strait.” You’ll be able
to do the two-step to covers of classics by George Jones and Merle Haggard, as well as original songs. If you like what you hear, the band just released a CD of original work, titled “Grampas, Heroes and Honkytonks,” in February. It can be purchased online or at the Great Western Clothing Company. Jones, who has been playing music “since the fourth grade,” left a 40-year career in the rodeo to hone his talents as a musician. Does he miss the broncs, the bulls, the dust and the mud? “Yes,” he says, “especially when I get around a rodeo. But I don’t have the drive to go out and practice five to six times a week, which is what you have to do to keep up with those young guns. I’ve been going to CCPRA rodeos since I was 18. I’m 60 now, and I’d rather stay inside on a rainy night and practice my guitar.”
Kick up your heels, but make sure to get a good seat in the grandstands too. The big event — bullriding — starts at 8 p.m. You’re not going to want to miss top cowboys from all over the region competing for the $3,000 cash prize. Only 30 of this sport’s most talented athletes are eligible for their chance at eight seconds of glory. One hand on the rope, one hand in the air, with points for style, consistency and time, this is one of the most dangerous and challenging events of any rodeo. The bulls from West Coast Rodeo Company’s prime bucking stock are sure to give us all a wild ride! Gates for Bands, Bulls and Brews open at 6:30 p.m., with $6 admission for all ages. HIS YEAR’S FORTUNA RODEO IS DEDICATED TO PAM CASACCA, A STEADFAST VOLUNTEER AND BELOVED MEMBER OF OUR COMMUNITY WHO LEFT US IN JANUARY. Born in Vallejo, Calif., on Oct. 8, 1943, Pam moved to Fortuna with her family at the age of 7 and attended Fortuna Elementary and Fortuna High. She went beauty to school in San Francisco before returning to work at Granvall’s Beauty Salon on L Street in Fortuna. She was owner and operator of Granvall’s (which relocated to behind her house) for more than 50 years. “They don’t make ‘em like Pam,” says Rita Chism, Casacca’s friend of four decades. Pam, or “Pammy” to her friends, was a spunky gal. An avid fan of regional sports and a die-hard Fortuna Huskies supporter, she was known for occasionally chasing basketball referees around the court when she ran the shot clock at highschool games. (The school instituted a new set of rules because of her enthusiasm.) Her daughter Carol Stone recalls her mom’s loud cheering during football games as rather embarrassing when she was in school, but the memory still makes her smile. Pam was easily recognizable to her grandchildren when she attended their soccer, baseball or softball games, as she always sported a bright sequined cap her granddaughter Jillian dubbed “The Bedazzler.” “When the sequins wore off she would just sew more on,” says Carol, “And she bled blue — Husky blue.” Pam was married to her husband, Garth, whom she met at a Sheepherder’s Ball in Bear River, for
more than 48 years. The two were active in the Rodeo for many years, always toting their three kids, Carol, Lois and Garth Jr. She volunteered at the concession stand as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary and when her sister, Carol Silberschlag, passed away, Pam assumed her duties organizing volunteers to help with taking tickets and selling refreshments. Pam was generous with her time and her goodwill. She received a Ruby Award from the Eel River Valley’s chapter of Soroptimist International in 2010. It was a well-deserved honor. Besides her contributions to many worthy local causes, she also visited the homes of elderly and ill women to style their hair, something she knew would boost their spirits. Pam was an active member of SCOP (Sheriff’s Citizens on Patrol) and she loved listening to the police scanner. Pam walked out of her salon the day she was diagnosed with mesothelioma in July 2013, never to return. The disease made her tired and weak, but she never lost her sense of humor or faith in family and God. Her friend Rita described the last day of Pam’s life, Jan. 12, 2014, as one “filled with grace.” Pam’s team, the 49ers, had just won a game on TV. Her pastor had stopped by for a visit. The scanner was playing in the background. Surrounded by family and with her faithful dog, Gin, at her side, Pam passed on. The Bedazzler has been retired. As we commence with this year’s Rodeo, it’s worth considering Pam’s generous spirit, her patriotism and love of this community. No one can replace “Pammy,” but we could probably each chase a referee in her honor. ✪

HE PARENTS OF FREESTYLE MOTOCROSS STAR JULIAN D’USSEAU DIDN’T WANT HIM ANYWHERE NEAR MOTORCYCLES. “They’d really rather that I was into soccer or guitar,” he says, a chuckle coloring his voice. Both his parents were soccer coaches. His mom coached the Humboldt State University team. But his fascination with the sport proved permanent. “I asked for one every birthday and, finally, they bought me a little two-stroke. Really, it was a good motivation for me, the only one they could use. Get good grades, eat your veggies, then you can ride your bike. It worked. They taught me some good values.” By the time D’Usseau was 15, he was making a competitive salary on the motocross scene. When he turned 18 he knew that he was going to do it for the rest of his life. He’s been on the road ever since. D’Usseau has spent the past 10 years competing professionally in motocross, accruing numerous awards and clocking in several international trips along the way. The day we spoke he was just getting ready to leave a show in Temecula, Calif. He admits that the heat of Southern California is refreshing during Humboldt County’s dreary winter months, but when temperatures get up to 100 degrees, he thinks wistfully about returning to the fog in McKinleyville. The Fortuna Rodeo, he says, is a welcome chance for him to perform for a hometown crowd. This will be D’Usseau’s third year showing off his moves at the rodeo, with performances scheduled for Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
“It’s nice to sleep in my own bed instead of at a hotel,” he says, “And it’s cool for my family and friends to be able to come down and see what I do.” The group of family and friends coming to watch his performance will include his daughter, Liliana, who turns 3 on July 16. D’Usseau took an unscheduled leave from performing recently after suffering an accident while filming a commercial for Metal Mulisha. He went over the handlebars of his bike and then the bike crashed into him. He broke three ribs, collapsed a lung and separated his collarbone. He’s back in the saddle now, and says that while the accident was painful, he was grateful to be home for a while to spend time with his daughter, something he doesn’t get to do often enough. He says, despite the many injuries he’s sustained over his career, it’s all worth it to do what he loves. “It’s still fun. When you’re hurt you say you’ll never do it again, but as soon as you start feeling better you forget and want to go right back to it.” Asked if he plans to introduce his daughter to the sport, he responds with an emphatic, “No.” “It might already be too late, though,” he says, “She’s already got the posters and stuff up on her walls. “I feel kind of sorry for my parents now,” he adds. D’Usseau will perform at the Fortuna Rodeo Friday night and Saturday afternoon, thanks to the support of Bear River Casino and Pacific Motorsports. ✪

Bull Riding Maybe the most popular event and probably the most dangerous, bull riding is a battle of wits and brute strength between a cowboy and the most dangerous of ranch animals. The cowboy attempts to ride for eight seconds, strapped to a bucking, whirling one-ton bull with only one hand. This is a judged competition: Points are awarded for the cowboy’s form and for the difficulty of the ride. But if the rider is bucked off, or if he touches the bull with his free hand, he is disqualified.

Bareback Riding Bronc riding comes from the essential cowboy skill of taming (or “breaking”) a horse for use. As in bull riding, a contestant must stay atop the wild animal for eight seconds using only one hand. But the bronc rider has additional considerations — he is also judged on how well he spurs the horse to action with his boots, and he must keep his feet in the stirrups at all times. Saddle Bronc
Like the saddle bronc event in many ways — but more slippery. In the bareback event, the bronc rider goes into action with one hand in a simple rigging and nothing at all between him and the horse except a pair of blue jeans. Once again, the contest is judged on the skill and form of the rider as well as the liveliness of the animal. Contestants must stay on for eight seconds to qualify for a score. Steer wrestling (or “bulldogging”) tests the cowboy’s strength as well as his skill at handling both horse and cattle. In this timed event, the steer leaves the chute at a run, tailed by one horseman (“the hazer”) who keeps the animal running in a straight line. After a head start, the barrier holding back the mounted contestant is tripped, and the steer wrestler races after his quarry. When he catches up, he dismounts his horse at a run and transfers his weight to the steer, which he then wrestles to the ground. Calf roping — also called “tie-down roping” — introduces another element into the mix. Not only must the cowboy rope the animal, as in breakaway roping, he must also bring it to a full stop and immobilize it. After the animal is lassoed, the cowboy dismounts and runs to the calf carrying a small rope in his teeth. He then throws the calf to the ground and binds

The only team event in the rodeo, team roping features two different styles of lasso work. A steer leaves the chute running. After a short head start, two cowboys follow on horseback. The first must rope the animal’s head or horns to stop its forward progress, moving it into a turn. Then the second — the “heeler” — attempts to lasso the animal’s rear legs. A five-second penalty is assessed if he manages to rope only one leg. The clock is stopped when the steer is fully roped and the contestants’ two horses face one another.

The premier women’s event in the rodeo, barrel racing is the ultimate test of speed and agility. Riders attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around the three barrels in the fastest time possible. The quickness of the clockwise and counterclockwise pivots around the barrels are crucial, as is the final sprint bac k to the starting line. The History of the Fortuna Rodeo
T
HE FORTUNA RODEO HAD ITS BEGINNINGS WAY BACK IN 1921 WHEN THE CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF Humboldt County planned a picnic. It was to be an afternoon and evening affair, with “Rodeo Stunts” after the barbecue and a dance in the evening with the intention of making it the biggest and jolliest picnic of the year! Charles W. Moore of Ferndale was general chairman, with Frank Rolley as superintendent of the barbecue. On the general committee were H. W. McWhorter, W. N. Russ, E. N. Tooby and Fred D. Smith, with volunteer help from others. Ben Snodgrass was director
of judges with William Graham of Bridgeville, Joe Russ of Ferndale and Buff Robinson assisting. The first event had a 25-piece band, a grand ball and a chicken supper. There was a gratifying response with 3,000 people attending. That was the beginning. … A great tradition began in Fortuna — the Redwood Fortuna Rodeo. Humboldt County has been an agricultural center for California, as its first settlers were ranchers. It’s a little wonder that Fortuna lays claim to the oldest and longest running annual rodeo on the North Coast. Rodeo History continued from pg. 37 and rodeo cowboys on the West Coast. By 1926, the event had turned into a rip-roaring three-day whirlwind of thrills and excitement. Doug Prior of Blocksburg was the chairman, and W. F. Robinson was committeeman in charge of the stock and the grounds. Ready were three carloads of bucking horses and 60 head of wild range cattle, secured by E. B. Lytle and Charles Moore. Crowds came, enjoyed the Maverick ball and the Sombrero ball on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. In 1930 there were more changes — now came riders from Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity and Mendocino, instead of professional riders. Putting on the show were G. E. Peterson, Charles Wescott, Art Chandler, George Graves, Cecil Evers,
Paul Friedenbach, Jack Benson, Louis Gist, H. W. McWhorter, Fred Krieg, Frank Brelle, Paul Mudgett, L. L. Bryan, L. S. East, P. A. Hugo and others. One year the rodeo went “long hair,” when Frederick Jagel of the Metropolitan Grand Opera Company sang every afternoon. By 1939, the rodeo had simmered down to a twoday event, but packed with just as much dynamite as the longer celebrations had been because the citizens continued to make every day preceding it a build up for the real thing. About 10,000 people attended the show in 1939 and though the new grandstand was not yet completed, the show was bigger and better than ever. In 1941 the rodeo joined the National Rodeo Association of America and at the time became known as one of the best
and biggest rodeos in Northern California. The blight of the war fell that year, and with it fell the Fortuna Rodeo, for the next five years. But in 1946 it rose again to newer and greater proportions. Bill Clark rode in the 1946 rodeo at the age of 80. In 1948 Stella James of Willits was chosen as the Rodeo Queen, with Pat Barnwell of Bridgeville and Naomi Pries of Ferndale as her attendants. The 1948 rodeo events grew to include a parade downtown, penny scramble, street dancing and vigilantes jailing local men who chose not to grow a beard for the event. Since its beginning, new faces and new hands guide the destiny of the Fortuna Rodeo while keeping alive the old traditions. That tradition continues today in Fortuna, every third weekend in July. ✪

As such, a tradition of honoring those who came before as well as those who carry on the work permeate the annual proceedings. Learn about some of the people who made and continue to add to the legacy.

Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle
The Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle is awarded to the top local all-around cowboy. Competitors must reside in Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity or Mendocino counties to qualify for this award. Gary was the owner of Ferndale Meat Co. and a member of the Fortuna Rodeo Board for many years. He was in charge of the rodeo’s deep pit barbeque while on the board and he served up a great meal. Edgmon passed away in 1998 and a memorial saddle has been given in his name ever since. Gary was a lifetime Fortuna resident known for his lighthearted humor and a giving personality. American AgCredit and Sequoia Gas Co. are proud to sponsor this award.

Fred Barry Memorial Buckle
The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle is awarded yearly to the Humboldt County Top Hand named after one of the larger figures in Fortuna Rodeo lore. Fred was a local cowboy/rancher, born and raised in Humboldt County. He won the All Around Cowboy award that would later bear his name at the 1941 Fortuna Rodeo. He would later go on to have a successful rodeo career on the national circuit, competing in many of the big rodeos, including the Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pendelton Roundup and the Calgary Stampede to name a few. After retiring from rodeo, Fred ran a successful cattle ranching operation in Loleta and continued to be a big supporter of the Fortuna Rodeo. The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle carries on his spirit.
Tom McWhorter Memorial All-Around Buckle
This buckle is presented to the Fortuna Rodeo’s All-Around Cowboy. Precision Intermedia proudly sponsors this award. Rodeo has always been a McWhorter Family tradition. For 54 years, Tom McWhorter served on the Fortuna Rodeo Board, enjoying the sport and camaraderie that are part of the cowboy way of life. From 2005 until 2012, Tom’s family granted the Tom McWhorter Rodeo Scholarship to high school rodeo participants from District Two of the California High School Rodeo Association. Tom grew up on a ranch in Yager Creek and always enjoyed going to the high school rodeos, watching the young people develop their skills and grow into world-class athletes. “District Two has had a number of state and college champions who started in the local high school rodeo circuit,” stated McWhorter’s son Ted, who continues the family’s rodeo tradition working for West Coast Rodeo Co. “We have an excellent reputation for outstanding competitors from our district.” ✪

FERNDALE From Fortuna: U.S. 101 north to Ferndale exit; approximately eight miles west on State Route 211. “The Victorian Village” is a short drive west from Fortuna. Attractions include Victorian architecture, unique shops on Main Street, the Ferndale Museum, Kinetic Sculpture Museum, Ferndale Cemetery, Fern Cottage and the Humboldt County Fairgrounds. The entire town has been designated a historic landmark. CENTERVILLE BEACH West of Ferndale. U.S. 101 to Ferndale/Fernbridge exit to Ferndale, turn right at Shaw Ave, then left to Centerville Road (about three miles). This quiet beach is flanked by spectacular cliffs of gray sandstone carved into unique formations by the ocean, enjoyed by a variety of birds and sea life.
