Covering the Spectrum It’s refreshing to see more color — and every color — incorporated in homes around the city. Homeowners are taking more risks (and they’re paying off!), and spec homes are using gray as the new neutral, replacing traditional beige. Whether it’s a black dining room or an emerald green living room (Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year), your options are practically endless, and almost anything goes. But if you’re uncertain, that’s where a designer comes in handy, especially knowing the power of color. After researching this year’s most popular hues, we’ll clue you in on the evergrowing popularity of black and white; how metallic rejuvenates a master suite; and the impact that a vibrant, refreshing color palette can have within your main living areas. (Isn’t this a sensational dining room?! See more of this home from Twigs Interiors on page 64.) We’ve also compiled a colorful list of today’s trendiest home decor, furniture, accessories and appliances to go along with any re-energized space. If you were to walk through my home, you’ll find a variety of colors, from Olympic’s Ornate Gold to Behr’s Stained Glass (a deep purple) — My theory is if you can’t decide on one, go with several! But

EMERALD A BRAND NEW HUE Since antiquity, emerald has been prized for sophistication and beauty –– neither has lost value. In 2013, this regal hue is touted as color of the year by Pantone Color Institute, the worldwide oracle of color communication and forecasting. Leatrice Eiseman, color specialist for Pantone, said in a press release, “Emerald is the color of growth, renewal and prosperity –– no other color conveys regeneration more than green. In contrast to 2012’s ‘spirited’ hue Tangerine Tango, Emerald enhances our sense of well-being, promoting balance and harmony. This powerful and universally appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.” Emerald could be viewed as a throwback to the 1980s, but fashion designers Dolce and Gabbana, Nanette Lepore, Tracy Reese and Marimekko are incorporating the color into their upcoming collections. Expect to see the “it” color step off the runway and become mainstream in women’s formal and everyday wear. Trendsetting retailers such as Garnet Hill, Calico Corners, Anthropologie, and ABC Carpet and Home are ga-ga over green, rejuvenating interiors with paint, accents and accessories. Even ubiquitous home-goods retailer JC Penney will use emerald throughout its spring line of bedding, pillows, towels and bath accessories. Designers Jonathan Adler and Robert Allen are both introducing green in fabric lines they work with, and custom-lighting companies such as The Natural Light will likely follow suit. For the kitchen, DeLonghi is debuting an espresso maker in emerald green. Similarly, Le Creuset has introduced a range of cookware in “fennel,” a farm-fresh deep green. According to Indian mystics, lustrous emerald is the color of balance and should play well in our future, bringing a much-needed sense of equilibrium.

Miss Hepburn C H A N N E L I N G

Photos courtesy of Tran + Thomas Design Studio

Megan Sinclair requested a glamorous living room wrapped in a garden-like setting, a place where she could kick up her pink stilettos and sip on a pink martini in her Fairway home. Needing a space that matched her colorful personality and sense of style, Carmen Thomas and Jill Tran, owners/ designers at Tran + Thomas Design Studio, created a boldly feminine space with fun fabrics, patterns and accessories you won’t easily find in Kansas City. “The homeowner wanted a bold, bright and colorful room with lots of girlie touches incorporating oranges and pinks,” Thomas says. Sherwin-Williams’ Kale Green provided the backdrop for trendy furnishings, including custom pink-andgreen paisley and embroidered polka-dot lampshades, custom ottomans, a Chesterfield leather sofa (to deter her cat, Coco Chanel, from clawing), an original painting of a lady by a local artist, and the custom-made glass light fixture over the fireplace that represents flowers in bloom, a definite focal point. “It seemed so natural to bring in several additional greens like you would find growing in a tended garden or in a field of wildflowers,” Tran adds. “We wanted it to be happy and decadent.” The drapes are even adorned with rhinestones, while the refined entryway with crystal chandelier creates an immediate fashion statement. “The client absolutely loves fashion,” Thomas says. “She is also a fan of Audrey Hepburn. We can picture her walking the streets of New York in an oversized hat and glasses like Miss Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

LEMON SORBET A TWIST OF LEMON Vincent van Gogh needed a lift. He may have felt depressed inside, but outside his studio window in southern France, he found his passion: fields of yellow and gold sunflowers that he painted incessantly. And for good reason, van Gogh was invigorated by color. For many, the feeling is mutual. Yellow is the most optimistic of colors. It refreshes and enlivens, gently lifting the spirit and heightening an overall palette effortlessly. Benjamin Moore has settled on Lemon Sorbet, a subtle, soothing shade of yellow as its 2013 color of the year. Sonu Mathew, Benjamin Moore’s senior interior designer, explains, “We’re moving from super-saturated and strong hues to softer, lighter pastel shades. The innocence and calm this color conveys is uplifting.” Mathew realizes that different companies have different color heroes. “Our design trend and philosophy is grounded in how the color will translate into the North American market. What will be the message for paint, auto, industry, fashion and design? The beauty in Lemon Sorbet is that it enlivens the palette. It lives beautifully with blues, greens and white. We realize that people aren’t going to overhaul their lives to arrange for this color; rather, we want the public to work with what they have. Perhaps try this color in an area that may need revision.” One thing is for certain, Lemon Sorbet is the perfect backdrop color. Pair it with pops of brighter hues and loads of texture to make a statement: raspberry with peach, apple green and ice blue, citrus and lime. Exactly what Kansas City designer Lisa Schmitz had in mind, using a pale buttery color in her design work. She pairs it as an accent in conjunction with warm gray and a muted grayish purple. “Yellow, even this soft, adds brightness to a room,” she says.

Truly a custom home, from the paint colors to the overall design, Kevin and Cynthia Toney’s Leawood home is comfortable and inviting — and can handle anything their six kids throw at it. Yellow, Cynthia’s alternative to beige, is also her favorite color, reflective of a happy life, which is why you’ll see it in several rooms throughout the home (including the exterior, which they lovingly call Old Yeller). As the painter and decorator, she wanted an environment with warm, happy colors that could be paired with almost anything. “I just wanted a background for fun, funky things,” she says. Each piece within the home’s eclectic interior has its own story while providing flexibility to grow with the family. The living room, a cozy spot for the family to read or play games while mom cooks dinner, features a repurposed door as a coffee table and mismatched yet complementary chairs. Cynthia’s studio, complete with an accent wall of varying colors of hand-painted squares, has transitioned into an office for all, displaying the kids’ artwork over her own. In the dining room, yellow became a secondary color to custom green stripes, also painted by Cynthia, created by mixing a clear glaze with a tube of acrylic paint. Again, this room has transitioned into an all-purpose space to include homework sessions and building LEGOs.

ALOE FEEL PRETTY...OH, SO PRETTY Color forecasters are a unique group. Part sociologist, part soothsayer, they sleuth fashion and the home-furnishings industry for cultural clues. Their expert opinions are then translated into a spectrum of color that’s incorporated into our daily lifestyle. Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-Williams’ director of color marketing, is one of those people. Instead of focusing on a big, bold color to crown in 2013, Sherwin-Williams has given the nod to a quietly soulful hue called Aloe –– a tint of greenish-blue with a retro vibe. “I chose this color for a variety of reasons: it’s youthful without being too saccharine. It’s easy to pair with coral, crisp white, soft gray, even a funky lilac or chartreuse.” As part of the Colormix Vintage Moxie palette, Aloe is featured with other pretty pastels that reach back to mid-century but with a modern edge –– ladylike but far more spirited. Like Benjamin Moore’s Lemon Sorbet, Aloe is no run-of-the-mill pastel. “Aloe is dreamy and nourishing; glamorous with great exuberance,” Jordan adds. She suggests using Aloe with warm wood tones, bleached or natural fabrics, and vintage metals. Radiating a soothing tranquility, it’s a good bet in a bedroom, an airy sunroom or living room. Designer Jonathan Adler mentioned he likes a color akin to Aloe so much that it’s his current crush. Kansas City interior designer Ann Egan says, “Love it! Aloe is fresh, crisp; a little blue, a little green, cheerful and understated. Aloe is great as a wall color with neutral fabrics of pale taupe, linen, creams and canvas. It is youthful and refreshing.” Blue-green in various intensities fill many a fan deck this season. The reason is simple: The color is easy, plays well with other colors and paves the way to serenity.

BLACK & WHITE CAST A SPELL WITH THE MAGIC OF BLACK AND WHITE A deep pool of mystery lies behind black and its dynamic counterpart, white. Both can be viewed in two ways: black, a potent mix of all hues, or conversely, the absence of any at all; and white, a constant workhorse in the palette, at once potent but often demure. Curiously, the strength and confidence that black conveys makes it a powerful tool in the world of fashion, industry and home furnishings. This classy, sexy hue sharpens and defines perhaps more than any other color. White takes a bow as the go-to when artists showcase their collections. The character of white is so untainted, so fresh, it hardly ever disappoints. Architects and designers embrace white to enlarge space and emphasize natural light. As a couple, black and white often share the limelight but are amazingly democratic. The flexibility of the duo paired together in fashion or home decor enlivens bold shades and elevates softer tints to glowing heights. Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams, expounds on why we’re irresistibly drawn to exploring black’s murky depths. “The vibe is masculine, the aesthetic both Victorian and futuristic.” But white holds its own. Benjamin Moore features 140 shades of white in its color library. The ethereal, feminine white is an engaging companion, a simplistic unifier that will never go out of style. Paired

together,

black

unstoppable. Throughout the spectrum of shades and tints, black and white stand alone or together. Both are hauntingly beautiful neutrals with timeless appeal.

Walls: Sherwin-Williams’ Caviar

This space could literally take dinner guests’ breaths away. It’s bold and beautiful, thanks to interior designer Kathleen Ramsey and Shawnee homeowners George and Sara Robinson. And it all started with a “simple” black-and-white color palette. The first pieces chosen were the zebra-print cowhide chairs. “The clients have a very contemporary aesthetic in their home,” Ramsey says. “They wanted something bold, dramatic and elegant for their dining room remodel.” Mission accomplished. The space is wrapped in what Ramsey calls the perfect black on the walls, outlined in white trim, topped with a cream ceiling with champagne metallic tone, and anchored by dark-stained hardwood floors. The drapes are lined with sheer black fabric and each pleat embellished with a custom-designed, handmade crystal tassel, while the crystal chandelier and repainted dining table are the homeowners’ original pieces. “I was excited to try something different and more modern,” Sara says. “I was willing to take that leap of faith (as long as the designer said it was OK).” Adding a subtle splash of modern, the side chairs in creamy white leather upholstery have classic lines and a tufted inside back, but it’s the collage of white porcelain plates over the repurposed buffet that creates the drastic contrast that Sara loves. 2013 COLOR! GRAY 50 SHADES OF GRAY Just like the novel by the same name, the color gray is still a best-seller. With tints and shades that swing from warm to cool, blue to brown, gray’s palette is exceptionally versatile. According to Sonu Mathews, Benjamin Moore’s senior interior designer, “Gray is a true neutral, working well with other colors. Our Thundercloud Gray is now seen as a baseline color –– it can be paired with both warm and cool colors.” Gray can lend elegant formality to a room, crafting an air of calm and confidence. There’s a reason battleships and political offices use gray as a color of choice. Color expert Kate Smith notes, “Gray is the color of intellect, knowledge and wisdom. It’s classic, sleek and refined. So controlled and inconspicuous, it is often considered a color of compromise –– the perfect neutral, which is why designers often use it as a background color.” James DeSantis, designer and stylist for HGTV’s Cousins on Call, agrees. “Tints and shades of gray are the cleanest, most soothing colors,” he says. “Our brain relaxes when it’s not under stimulation, so muted, washed-out tones keep it from turning into high gear.” This livable color has an enduring quality. Little wonder it blankets big-ticket items like cars, carpet and sofas. Tim Butt, owner/designer of Black Bamboo, suggests using a warm gray to his clients to keep rooms feeling comfortable and sophisticated. “The main reason I suggest gray to clients is its flexibility. Try a predominately gray room and see what happens when you add orange, pink, lavender, apple green, fuchsia blue or yellow. It’s far from a boring choice.”

OLIVE OLIVE, FAR FROM DRAB This year’s color forecast has been influenced by some of the challenges faced in 2012. Never in modern history have disasters such as droughts, floods, rising oceans, melting polar ice caps and hurricanes impacted lifestyles so dramatically. Two staples in the color corral are shades of green and yellow. In various transformations, these favorites merge to produce olive, a root color that’s a natural part of our vernacular. With healing colors forecast in 2013, there’s an overall muting of a somewhat vibrant 2012 palette. This is translating into an overarching feeling of hope and a hint of glee for the new year. That sentiment can be seen in Color Marketing Group’s color Nitro, a shade of olive shifting toward yellow –– slightly neon but soft. Sherwin-Williams’ olive trend draws inspiration from the camouflage color seen in military uniforms. The color gurus tell us they are seeing olive tones such as Herbal Wash work well to create a more rustic feel in a room when combined with orange, yellow and berry colors. Kansas City interior designer Deborah Vogler is quick to point out that “Olive isn’t just a garnish for your martini. The muted tones create a real sense of calm in a room...think about nature, the outdoors. Olive provides the perfect backdrop in a dining room, one of my favorite rooms for using this color. I use a darker olive with brownish undertones to achieve a bronze, metallic effect. I complement backgrounds with luxurious fabrics and textures often featuring maroon and blue for furnishings.”

LAVENDER NOT JUST KID-STUFF The opulent shade of purple incorporates a broad spectrum of colors infused with the vitality of red and the peacefulness of blue. Together, the mix has held a vaulted position down through the ages. It was the royal color of the Caesars, signified religious fervor in medieval Briton, and is still considered a sign of wealth and status in Japan. The 7th chakra is crowned with lavender, wounded military honored with the Purple Heart, and in 2011, Boyz n Berry, a sassy shade of lavender, legitimatized when President Obama donned a tie in this color for the family portrait. This year, lavender, a mix of violet and white is on the home-decorating radar. Tones can range from very light to medium dark, evoking femininity, youth and freshness. The grayer hues imply elegance and grown-up sophistication. Color Marketing Group’s George Iannuzzi notes, “Lavender has deepened to a more vintage brown, as seen in our 2013 offering called Bruised.” “The first time I entered a lavender room, I felt I was floating on a cloud in the sky,” recalls Kansas City interior designer Ann Egan. “A college friend invited me to her home, and when she opened the door...oh my! Jane had a white French Provençal canopied bed and puffy white spread with lavender dots. Most startling were the lavender walls and carpeting. When I climbed up onto the bed, it was like riding on a cloud!” Becky Ralich, director of color and design services at Sherwin-Williams, says, “The purple trend that dominated last year still has momentum in 2013. Anticipate more lilacs and lavenders such as Awesome Violet, Radiant and Obi Lilac. These palettes will take on a more romantic and Edwardian feel, drawing inspiration from popular shows such as Downton Abbey.”

To simply call it “neutral” doesn’t do justice to this modish Mills Farm home. Subdued grays with black accents on the main level create the backdrop for pops of turquoise, red and orange found in accessories and fabrics throughout the home. “Utilizing black as a grounding and unifying force, the geometry of the house shows,” says Lisa Mermis, owner of Twigs Interiors. “[The homeowners] also really liked the play of light gray-greens, smoke, ebony and light enamel.” The floor-to-ceiling stacked quartz stone see-through fireplace stylishly separates the great room from the dining room, while custom rugs and lighting bring ‘chic living’ full circle. (See a glimpse of the dining room on page 13.) Symmetry is created in pairs, with matching white lamps, Hickory Chair Furniture sofas and red wingback chairs, one of many focal points in this clearly customized home. “The homeowners wanted [the main level] to seat a lot of family, to be graceful, dramatic and on the Deco/contemporary side,” Mermis says. With very few guidelines, the designers created a home filled with elegance and durability for the growing family of five. “While the fabrics are very sophisticated, they are also kid-friendly,” Mermis adds. “Many are indoor/outdoor fabrics.” Want to see more of what this trendy yet sophisticated home has to offer? You’ll find it in one of KCH&G’s upcoming issues.

METALLIC GILTY PLEASURES A little glitz goes a long way. “Consumers are starting to be more confident using metallics,” says Jackie Jordan, SherwinWilliams’ director of color marketing. “We’re seeing people start with smaller spaces, such as adding dazzle to a powder room or adding shimmer to ceilings and dining spaces. Metallic touches lend a happy, sparkling quality which, in turn, can make us feel good.” The color specialists at Color Marketing Group (CMG) concur. This year their Splitz is a metallic color embracing the hope of a better year ahead. Is it silver or champagne? It has a hint of blush, the color of champagne bubbles. George Iannuzzi, CMG member, says, “It’s a transition color and a celebration of success.” Benjamin Moore notes that warm metallics are moving forward. The newest trend is an opaque product called Molten Metallics, an oil-based paint suspending a metallic pigment in an alkyd resin. The finished product produces a hammeredmetal look. Interior designer Lisa Schmitz says, “Polished metal adds a sense of glamour and sophistication to a room. Whether in a colorful or neutral interior, metals add bling, bringing contrast to matte finishes, fabrics and rustic woods.” Elevate the mood with a pop of metallic paint. The shimmer will enhance furnishings or interiors with a confident nod to the future.

If you think the man of the house doesn’t appreciate a stylish bedroom, think again. The neutral color palette found in Mike and Leslie Huffaker’s Maysville, Mo., master suite was based off of Mike’s subtle color preference; the glam, of course, was added by Leslie. “[Leslie] wanted something ethereal,” says Amy Redman, owner/designer of Redman Design Studio. “She wanted something that was modern and clean-lined but cozy at the same time.” The entire space brilliantly sparkles in Phillip Jeffries’ metallic paper weave on the walls and ceiling, which is offset by a small amount of Sherwin-Williams’ Silverplate. The Schonbek crystal chandelier, the highlight of the space, brings the whole room to life as the cozy sitting area — elegantly decked out in Calcutta Gold marble with original artwork by a Cuban artist — provides a space for Leslie’s morning cup of coffee and a good book. The clean lines of the wing bed complement the metallic threading in the bedding, another custom feature. Other items of interest include framed favorite quotes, portraits of family and friends, and a built-in bookcase by Gaiser Construction that’s backed in the metallic paper weave. The master bathroom features the same wallcovering, just a shade lighter; a dedicated make-up area, with a chair upholstered in the same fabric as the bed frame; a custom stair baluster that mimics the shape of the backsplash; and a walk-in shower, also with Calcutta Gold marble. There’s no better space to dream sweet dreams.
