Truth: our annual “Color Issue” is always a favorite at the At Home office. We are hard at work on this issue just as winter is melting away into spring, and nothing puts pep in our step like sunny yellows, vivid corals, refreshing blues and organic greens. Whether in spring’s newest home accessories and furniture releases, or in the perfectly layered tabletop designed by Andrea Brooks on page 31, the color in this issue brings the pages of our magazine to life—something it can do for you and your home as well. We love seeing how different designers play with color depending on their clients’ personal tastes, too. In Northwest Arkansas, Joanna McCusker added unexpected pops of orange and turquoise in an Englishstyle cottage (page 34), while designers Jennifer Huett and Laura Bartell used a playful combination of paint, rugs and artwork to wake up dull spaces (pages 40 and 48, respectively). We polled a handful of designers on their favorite paint combinations and shared their picks on page 55. The overarching theme seems to be layering—either by starting neutral and layering on color, or by expertly combining colors to create a varied and powerful palette. In many ways, the same rules for applying color to your home can also be used when it comes to your wardrobe. If your closet is a sea of neutrals, you might add a pop of trendy neon with jewelry, a belt or even a pair of shoes. If you’re fearless with color, mix and match as much as you like—or try one bold color from head to toe, since monochromatic looks ruled the runway this season. More and more, people are breaking those dated fashion “rules” and taking big risks, and we were pleased as punch to play along in our spring fashion style guide, found on page 57. Our gorgeous model, Joan Early, practically glows in the bright, vibrant colors and bold, graphic prints that are popping up everywhere this season. So what’ll it be? A hot pink necklace or a fuchsia accent wall? A cobalt blue suit or a turquoise couch? Go ahead, be bold. We dare you.

Art appraiser Jennifer Carman is an open book if you’re looking to learn more about paintings, sculptures and decorative accessories. Since the age of eight she has been collecting artist’s monographs and exhibition catalogs, beginning with a large book of highlights from the Louvre Museum she received as a Christmas gift. “Until that time I was mostly familiar with books full of text where the stories would evoke a vision. With books full of artwork the vision is provided for you, requiring your mind to grapple with a new set of ideas,” she explains. Needless to say, Carman was taken with a passion for the books. “As a child I would save my allowance so I could slowly grow the collection,” she recalls. Carman, who owns Little Rock’s J.Carman, Inc. Art Advisory and Appraisal Services, has allowed her love of art to evolve from a hobby to a career. She now has more than 3,000 books on art and decorative accessories, many of which she uses to identify and appraise her clients’ pieces. However when it comes to her personal collection, it’s not necessarily books that cover sought-after topics, ones that are rare finds themselves or even works considered to be of value that catch her well-trained eye. Rather, among her favorites are art books that evoke emotion or bring to mind certain places, experiences or people she’s been fortunate to meet during her pursuit of this passion. Written by his wife, Bernarda, this book chronicles the work of American artist Ben Shahn, who often chose subject matters that dealt with social injustice and respect for the human condition. Closer to her Arkansas roots, this renowned first publication on 1930s and 40s Heber Springs photographer Mike Disfarmer inspired Carman to curate an exhibition of his work last year.
Found in a London used bookstore in 2002, Henri Matisse: Retrospective takes Carman back to her days of living abroad and a Matisse exhibit she was working on at the time. Carman has owned this book, which features more than 240 paintings by Andrew Wyeth of a German model named Helga, for more than 25 years and considers it to be an eye-opening experience. 28 At Home in Arkansas | April 2013

Andrea Brooks bridges the gap between bold hues to create a sophisticated-yetcasual tabletop By Rosemary Hallmark
El Dorado-based interior designer Andrea Brooks loves to layer vibrant colors as well as new and vintage pieces in her room designs. So, it’s no surprise she applies that same fearless philosophy to entertaining. For this modern take on a fun ladies’ lunch, Brooks began with vintage blue-and-white peacock china and cobalt cut glass tumblers. Next, she added yellow and gold accents to give the table a warm, yet subtle shimmer. “The yellow tray adds a playful, modern touch that keeps the tablescape feeling young and current,” Brooks says. Simple green button mums bridge the blue and yellow, complementing both colors without being the main attraction, while a peacock print tablecloth, made from a fabric found at Cynthia East Fabrics, acts as the statement piece that ties it all together. Brooks mixed vintage Russian peacock china and cobalt glasses from Main Street Antiques with gold-rimmed chargers from Sydney Murphy Design, both in El Dorado. The Layered Look Brooks recommends choosing two colors and layering them in different shades. The blues range from teals to cobalts, while gold acts as a second layer of yellow. Since green is the result of blending these two hues, it’s a natural way to pull the look together.

Working in tandem, a homeowner and designer create a cottage filled with colorful flourishes
Nothing brings friends together like a good design project. At least that’s the story of homeowner/designer duo Jamie Clark and Joanna McCusker, who quickly became gal pals over mood boards and countless cups of coffee. As the pair’s shared appreciation of French antiques and functional spaces surfaced, McCusker recalls how the design consultations turned into “fun, little lunches and dinners,” and the rest is history. It’s no coincidence that Clark and McCusker found common ground in the crosshairs of interior design and culinary arts. After all, dining and entertaining in comfort were Clark’s initial inspirations to redesign her once-cramped kitchen, den and pantry areas. Throw in McCusker’s knack for mixing old and new, and you’ve got a recipe for colorful, chic perfection with a touch of vintage charm. When Clark found her small, but character-rich cottage no longer conducive to her family’s daily lifestyle, not to mention entertaining, she recruited kitchen

design expert McCusker, who works as a freelance home designer, as well as a consultant for Springdale’s New Century Counter Tops. “This house is very unique,” Clark reflects on her charming residence, rife with whimsy and quirk. “I’m really drawn to that English countryside look of homes, furniture and even lifestyle,” and she’s not kidding. Atop a grassy hill on the outskirts of rural Van Buren, the Clarks’ ranch-style property includes a herd of horses and a sweeping view of the Arkansas River Valley—the picture of pastoral bliss. This “countryside look” is exactly what Clark insisted remain intact during the redesign process, while also adding usable space with unexpected pops of interesting color and pattern. Characteristic of many built in the 1920s, Clark relates that her home is modest in space, and many of its rooms have been repurposed through the years. Naturally, a woman who hosts as frequently and readily as Clark needs a maison as capable to multitask as she is. The challenge was to maximize the existing space without moving walls or extending into other parts of the house. “I didn’t know how she would solve it, but she did,” Clark brags on her friend, McCusker. “As basic as it is, color brings dimension and lightness to a room instantly, unlike any other element of design,” says McCusker of her solution to “expand” the small cottage. She artfully underscored the warmer tones so fond to the homeowners, while introducing new colors and patterns to the formerly neutral-heavy interior. “One of my favorite things,” Clark notes, “is the unifying gold treatment throughout the house…in the kitchen backsplash and floor tiles, the den’s silk drapes and classic toile wallpaper. It’s a light source that makes everything feel bigger.” The turquoise couch and buffet contrast nicely with the cream-colored built-in shelves, French doors and lightly accented walls, as do the orange-rimmed dining chairs with the black-andwhite of the zebra-print seats. “Personally, I’m not scared to paint a wall of color,” says McCusker, who notes she tames the color’s “newness” with more traditional complements. Due to Clark’s love of antiques, considerations were made to incorporate this passion through several key pieces. McCusker used two gilded chandeliers—one in the kitchen and one over the dining table. Retro-inspired dining chairs from Tracy Porter help to add an eclectic air to the space, making the room feel as if the pieces were truly chosen based on Clark’s taste, rather than a sternly structured design. McCusker echoed this appeal in the purposefully distressed turquoise couch and buffet from Horchow. Although the furniture selections are new, they have the charm and quality of older, vintage pieces. Clark is infinitely pleased with the outcome. “We love it!” she exclaims. “I enjoy cooking for family and friends, and we eat at home a lot. The renovation has really infused comfort into an uncomfortable space.” Besides the appearance of added space thanks to McCusker’s clever use of color, the Clarks now have double the storage space, a larger refrigerator, two dishwashers, a vegetable sink and a new laundry area in the pantry. The mark of true success: “I’ve been over to [Clark’s] house several times since the redesign, and everyone’s always hanging out in the kitchen! McCusker helped to make this once awkward space a kitchen redesign dream with an intricately patterned backsplash and floor tiles, as well as double the storage space—including shallow glass cabinets above the vegetable sink for displaying china and other dishware. The glass, McCusker notes, helps to make the space feel light and open.

“Color is everything,” says designer Jennifer Huett, who worked with a busy family of five to update their Hot Springs home. “They are a very high-energy group,” she says of the Hannon family. “They like to live life to the fullest and didn’t need a serene space to come home to. They wanted a home that makes them happy.” Happy, it is. Huett hit all of the high notes of a Crayola box, including vibrant red, earthy green, trendy turquoise and a deeply delightful purple, but did so gracefully enough that the homeowner’s heirloom antiques blend seamlessly into the more contemporary aesthetic. “We had to find a way to use three exuberant colors, but not have them feel forced,” Huett says. A wool rug from Company C featuring red, green and turquoise anchors the living room and became the jumping off point for the adjacent dining room, kitchen and breakfast area. In the coral living room, an art installation made of reclaimed wood introduces the raw material, which is used throughout the home to temper the vibrant—and often cool—tones of the walls and fabrics. “Paint is an inexpensive way to introduce color,” says Huett. “If you’re unsure, try a piece of art or even a vase with brightly-colored flowers in it. Then, move up to an accent wall. If you keep the big pieces neutral, you can always change your mind.” To balance this space, an inherited pair of armchairs, recovered in red with a cheerful green piping, were paired with a neutral sectional sofa. “I meet so many people who have storage units full of beautiful pieces that have been passed down to them,” says Huett. “They have proper emotional attachments to them but don’t know how to incorporate them into a more trendy or colorful look.” Huett, however, jumped in with both feet by fearlessly pairing the family’s English antiques with bright colors, modern art and new upholstery. As a result, the home feels unique and authentic. She also gave the once builder-grade kitchen a custom facelift with new appliances and a backsplash by Inside Effects in Little Rock. She replaced the original island with one painted with a
turquoise wash, adding not only color but also charm. Overhead, the interior of a drum shade is painted lime green, providing a playful and unexpected touch. In the same space, a demure antique chest coexists peacefully with a rustic, reclaimed wood pedestal table and chandelier. Admist the color of the home’s main living areas, there is one retreat. The serene pale blue master bedroom provides an escape from the energy of the rest of the home. Garment-dyed linen panels from Bella Notte soften the wood-and-chrome testers on the bed, and a slipcovered armchair from Shabby Chic offers a soft spot to unwind at the end of the day. As a mother of two girls herself, Huett immediately understood 15-year-old Peyton’s requests for color, and more color. “Teenagers tend to still enjoy the colors of childhood, but want a more grown-up space,” she says. “It needed to be livable, but fun.” The resulting space is vibrant, youthful and designed to foster and accommodate the active teen’s busy lifestyle. To get the look, Huett recovered an existing upholstered bed in a mod gray and purple print from Duralee, and paired it with a turquoise tone-on-tone miniature cheetah print. “When using

so many strong colors in one space, you have to choose your battles wisely,” she notes. “It’s important to keep fabric and art more subtle to give the eye a place to rest.” Reflective surfaces provide an alternative texture but don’t compete with the color scheme. “It’s not a big room, so the mirrors help bounce light around the space,” says Huett. “And chrome (found on the bedside lamp and nailheads) is just fun.” A glass chandelier, which hangs overhead, is without a doubt the focal point of the room. “I always try to give my clients something not everyone has,” says Huett. “When she came into the room for the first time there was definitely some squealing. Color can bring so much joy, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Working alongside a list of high-profile designers, including color connoisseur Jamie Drake, gave Arkansas native Laura Bartell plenty of inspiration for interiors that were anything but neutrally monochromatic. After returning to her beloved home state to start her own Hot Springs-based firm in 2010, Bartell was eager to apply her learnings–especially when it came to colorful homes. Luckily, just the project presented itself—a complete renovation of a 1970s-style home. “It was just out of the ‘Brady Bunch’ era,” laughs Bartell. “There was shag carpet, dark wood paneling and very dated appliances,” she recalls. However, the space did have several key things working in its favor including an overall good bone structure, outstanding views of Little Rock’s Overlook area and perhaps most importantly, a client that was ready to dig in from day one. Not only were the home’s furnishings dated, its overall plan was choppy, preventing them from enjoying each other’s company in the flow of a continuous space. Before she started on the furnishings, Bartell worked with local contractor, Jimmy Lasley, to reconfigure the home’s layout. The pair updated the flow and circulation of the home, giving the living areas room to breathe by replacing walls with banks of windows to expose the gorgeous hillside views. From there, it was time to get to work on the furnishings. “When I’m designing, I love to mix traditional furnishings and heirlooms with modern art and lots of color. It’s exciting and can make any space feel fresh and young-hearted,” relates Bartell. In an effort to remain true to this client’s personal style and needs, she used numerous preexisting pieces, many of which were traditional, and also drew inspiration for the color palette from their collections, as well as the things they said were most important to them. 50 At Home in Arkansas | April 2013

“Their previous home was decorated in blue, white and yellow, and they really wanted to keep a lot of these colors in the new space. They also have a large collection of blue-and-white china pieces, and I wanted to scatter these around the home,” notes Bartell. Using these factors as a starting point, she drew up designs for a home adorned in primary hues, including the homeowner’s favorite blues and yellows, as well as the addition of red to complete the primary trio and bring warmth to the home’s palette. Different spaces took on different aspects of the palette allowing the entire home to flow with a sense of cohesiveness. For example, the yellow walls of the kitchen feel light and cheerful, and also carry over in the drapery selections for the dining room as well as many of the accessories and the artwork in the living 52 At Home in Arkansas | April 2013
area. For the home’s foyer a traditional oriental rug was the starting point. From there Bartell accented with a contemporary light fixture and wide wingback chair to give the space the personalized, collected look that is characteristic of the home. There is one space, however, that deviates from the red, blue and yellow palette – a kid-friendly guest room. “Since the couple has grandchildren that visit frequently, it was important to create a space designed just for them,” says Bartell of the room’s inspiration. The wall color came first, as a play off the other rooms’ primary palettes. “From there the canopies were an easy and affordable way to add something special to the room,” she says of the striped fabric and grosgrain creations that hang just above the set of twin beds.
Perhaps the most traditional of the home’s spaces, the dining room has display space for the homeowners’ blue-and-white china collection as well as a piece of modern art. Contemporary lines and color abound in this light-hearted guest room, which serves as a retreat for the homeowners’ grandchildren. Starting with a bright green wall color, Bartell accented with complementary colors to make the space appear fresh and uniquely different from the rest of the home’s interiors.
