Take Your Business to the Next Level Introducing the CEO Think Tank The CEO Think Tank is designed to help a business get over the wall and achieve success. Guiding principles for the CEO Think Tank come from the work of author Verne Harnish and his books “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits” and “Scaling Up.”

O

ver the years, the Chamber has offered business education programs for small businesses that focuses on two key areas: “Finding Your Next Customer” and “Business Fundamentals.” In addition, the Chamber has tried to find a way to help midsized companies as they continue to grow and scale-up their businesses. This past fall, the Chamber found such a program: the CEO Think Tank. The CEO Think Tank is designed specifically for business owners or key executives of a company with 15300 employees and over $1 million dollars in revenues. The CEO Think Tank incorporates peer interaction, business success and personal growth in a confidential and supportive setting. It features a monthly group meeting, has a quarterly seminar featuring a high quality speaker and holds an annual retreat to assess the progress of the group and the individual members. Each group is designed to have no more than 12 members and is led by a professional facilitator who can also provide one-on-one coaching. Each member of the group pays a monthly fee and must agree to be an active participant

by sharing their business experience and supporting the other members. Each group member can discuss the real issues facing their business and receive advice and feedback from other members of the group that are or have encountered the same problem. The member’s experiences and knowledge that are shared become a powerful peer-to-peer tool that helps each business address key challenges. Many business owners and managers are very good at producing or providing their particular product or service. Quite often they “hit the wall” when it comes to growing their business and taking it to the next level.

While these books are not required reading they help put in place an effective process for the group to follow. Each CEO Think Tank group works as an advisory group, sharing best practices, so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. The Rockefeller Habits provide a strategic process with a common language that allows group members to get straight to the point and ensure every member brings value to each discussion. The Chamber has partnered with Cheryl Beth Kuchler, Founder and President of CEO Think Tank® and Chris Burkhard, President and Founder of the Outside-In® Companies to offer this new program that will share practical tools and techniques that CEO’s and Executives in the small and mid-market have used for the last three decades to build industry-dominating companies. AS A M AT T E R O F FAC T By Mark A. Kleinschmidt President New Castle County Chamber of Commerce

Are We There Yet? Has the New Delaware Economy Arrived?

 Our state economy can no longer count on several large employers to provide economic activity and jobs.

S

ince 2009, when we were in the midst of the Great Recession, the Delaware economy has gone through a number of significant changes. Gone are the days when we could count on MBNA, Wilmington Trust, GM and Chrysler to provide thousands of jobs. But not to worry, we have always had the DuPont Company as a source of great economic activity and employment for the community. However, that all changed with the December 2015 announcement of the DuPont-Dow merger along with the loss of over 1,700 jobs and the shifting of major business units out of the state. You have to wonder, is there more to come? How could we lose all these tremendous companies and all the related economic activity and the jobs? There is no single answer, but there are many factors that

contributed to the loss of these companies. We will find a mixture of complex reasons ranging from changing socio-economic conditions, international competition, a struggling public education system, the increased use of technology, and public safety in Wilmington that led to loss of these large employers. Our state economy can no longer count on several large employers to provide economic activity and jobs.

It is not all the responsibility of government, Delaware businesses must think differently about ways to meet changing consumer demands, increased global competition, take advantage of technological advancements and seek out ways to be stronger competitors in The Great Recession and the Dow- the Philadelphia region and DuPont merger have significantly changed the world. the structure of our local economy and While it is nice to remiproduced a lot of uncertainty which will nisce about the good old days when it make it more challenging to have economic seemed everyone worked for DuPont, growth and job creation. One thing is GM, Wilmington Trust, Chrysler or clear: our elected leaders must seek out MBNA, we have to move on to the new ways to support businesses and they realities of our new economic landscape. must develop policies and programs that During this year’s campaign season make will support meaningful economic growth. sure you ask your General Assembly, City

Council, County Council and candidates for Governor about their ideas for promoting economic activity. It will take time and our elected leaders must embrace the post-DuPont era and start to implement new ideas that support business growth or it will be a long time before we get to the new economy.

Take Your Business to the Next Level Introducing the CEO Think Tank Continued from page 1. The CEO Think Tank has been successful because it holds members of the group accountable, provides high quality mentorship and creates an individualized plan for each member. According to Cheryl Beth Kuchler, “It’s easy to be distracted by day-to-day business issues, but the monthly meetings provide an opportunity for group members to be highly focused and allows them to really work on “growing” their business as opposed to running their business.” Companies from a wide range of industries including manufacturing, banking, IT, engineering, legal, insurance and construction to name a few, have participated in the CEO Think Tank. Ongoing participation in the CEO Think Tank

has produced significant results for these previous and current CEO Think Tank members: • Lernia Training Solutions increased their net profitability from less than 5% to over 15% • Hawks and Company has grown from less that $3 million to almost $4 million this year.

and Constructure Management have been listed on the Philly 100 Top Businesses. The Chamber is actively looking to include more member companies in the CEO Think Tank program. If you are a business with more than 15 employees and revenue of $1 million or more and would

like to take your business to the next level, you should consider becoming part of the CEO Think Tank. Make plans to attend the informational briefing on February 26th at the Chamber. For more information contact Frank DeSantis at desantisf@ ncccc.com or 294-2056.

LEGISLATIVE CONNECTION

Senate Passes Minimum Wage Increase Chamber will Oppose in the House

O

ver the Christmas holiday, the Boys and Girls Club located in Wilmington at 1601 N. Spruce Street was visited by the Grinch. It seems that a bunch of Grinches or vandals dismantled the HVAC system located on the roof and stole the parts to sell for scrap. Needless to say this left the building without heat and has seriously hurt the Boys and Girls Club’s ability to offer programs to the children who live in that area.

Visit www.ncccc.com & click Government Affairs

n Tuesday, January 26, New Castle County Chamber Lobbyist Joe Fitzgerald took the Senate floor to testify against Senate Bill 39, legislation which would put into effect four consecutive years of minimum wage increases, followed by an annual cost of living increase (COLA). The bill would increase Delaware’s minimum wage from the current $8.25 per hour to $10.25 (a nearly 25 percent increase) in 2019 in increments of 50 cents per year. After 2019, there would be an annual cost of living adjustment (COLA). The Chamber strenuously objects to any COLA provision as a government mandated increase in labor costs should require a vote by our elected leaders.

Chamber Challenges HVAC Grinch O

When the Senate reconvened on Wednesday, January 27 the Senate passed an amended bill that struck the cost of living provision from the bill The New Castle County Chamber of Commerce will continue to vigorously oppose this bill and will keep our members apprised of developments. The increase will primarily hurt small businesses and seasonal businesses. The data show that very few people actually earn the minimum wage. Here are some other facts about Minimum Wage: • Only 2.9 percent of workers in the United States make the minimum wage.

• 50 percent of those workers are between the ages of 16 and 24. • A total of 62 percent of minimum wage workers are still in school and working part time. • Two-thirds of minimum wage employees live in families with incomes exceeding 150 percent of the poverty line. • Only 4 percent of minimum wage workers are single parents working full time. Another flawed premise underlying the move to increase the minimum wage is that small businesses owners in this state are somehow hoarding profit which could otherwise be paid to their employees. In his testimony,

Fitzgerald stated “We at the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce acknowledge and respect the concern shared by legislators on both sides of the aisle for individuals at the lowest part of the wage scale. Some proponents of a minimum wage increase present this as a moral issue, we submit that this is a question of mathematics rather than morality.” In his closing remarks, Fitzgerald noted Delaware’s slow emergence from the great recession and the current fragile economic landscape. “This isn’t the same Delaware that it was 15, 20 years ago. There is no MBNA; there are no auto plants.”

The vandals made off with nearly $300,000 worth of HVAC equipment and the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce set out to help. The Chamber donated two tickets for the February 12th Philadelphia Bruce Springsteen show and raffled off 300 tickets in an effort to raise money for the Club. Thank you to all who purchased raffle tickets to support the Boys & Girls Club. Because of your generosity, the Chamber was able to present them with a check for $5,000! The winner of the Springsteen tickets was Maureen Skelly and was announced at the Annual Meeting and Mixer on January 14th at the Sheraton Wilmington South. Chamber President Mark Kleinschmidt said, “The action of these vandals hurt over 200 families in Wilmington, the Chamber is pleased to help out and it is great to see our members participate. The stolen HVAC units are the source of air distribution for the boys and girls club that serves more than 200 of the city's youth through childcare. With no emergency building funds and an already financially difficult situation, the club is stuck waiting on an insurance claim that officials say may take months to process. Visit www.bgclubs.org to donate to the vandalism fund.

Frank DeSantis, Program Director for the EEC said, “I am so pleased that we were introduced to Panagiotis Kollas and UNISCRAP by Andrea Tinianow’s team at the Delaware Department of State, as part of their Global Delaware initiative. Our International Soft Landings Program is designed to help foreign companies that are looking to establish a presence in US markets. We provide support and services that allow them to open an office, learn the business culture, and make the contacts they need, while they determine where in Delaware they want to permanently locate.” The EEC has worked with two other companies in the International Soft Landings Program. One of them, originally known as Idea Italia, now operating as Delaware is Good for Business (DIGFB), brought the

“Treasures and Tales of the Guardia di Finanza, Italy’s Art Recovery Team,” an interesting and interactive art exhibit, to the Grand Opera House in Wilmington in the Fall of 2014. UNISCRAP has an ambitious, global vision, that is rooted in a very practical approach, utilizing current industry resources and technology to develop relationships that will create funding and revenues that will finance future innovations and revenue streams. Currently, Panagiotis and his team are actively pursuing a variety of partnerships and sourcing agreements. In Europe, UNISCRAP has established a partnership with FCC Environment on the sourcing of recyclable resources (alternative fuels & materials), and are working with the following materials: tire scrap, biomass (wood chip), plastics, metals and solid recovery fuel as well as paper. At the moment they are working to supply alternative fuels to the Greek cement plants industry. Here in United States, UNISCRAP PBC is seeking to work with the government of Delaware, and participating on the Organics Task Force Committee, for designing and developing a solution for recovery the organics waste materials from the poultry industry and producing bi-products such as biogas, power and organic fertilizer. UNISCRAP has also established a partnership with North East Recycling Council Organization. In addition to the International Soft Landings Program, the EEC has other incubation programs designed to assist start-up companies, including both a resident program for members who need office space, and a virtual program for members who want all of the benefits of support, access to resources and advice, without the need for space.
