Big changes are on the horizon By Alistair Wallace at BKB Accountants For anyone who completes a tax return, you are about to experience one of the biggest changes in your life. Forget the annual run around looking for receipts and interest certificates, you’ll be having to do this 4 times a year from 2018 if HMRC get their way.

How will these changes affect your tax payments? HMRC will be encouraging you to pay your tax quarterly, albeit they are not yet insisting on it. If we go to quarterly payments of tax, the first year will be interesting with both previous and current year’s taxes being paid in the same year.

The self-employed and landlords will need to use software, apps or an accountant to keep their business records and update HMRC quarterly. HMRC have already said this year that they no longer insist on hard copy invoices or receipts being retained, but will accept scans or photographs instead. Software is already available that enables this to happen and keep records in accordance with the changes coming.

Will these changes actually happen? Probably yes. They have launched a consultation document but we do not expect the proposed changes to be withdrawn. The finer detail may be tweaked but these new reporting deadlines will likely happen, although the Treasury Select Committee have advised of a deferment.

Directors are not let off either. Quarterly filing will still apply but HMRC will already have details of your wages from the current RTI system and dividends will be notified from the paying company.

The Federation of Small Businesses The FSB is Britain's leading business organisation with over 200,000 members. It exists to protect and promote the interests of the self-employed, and all those who run small businesses. The FSB in Dorset has 4,000 small businesses as members.

Stop late payments, save 50,000 small businesses

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has recently published a comprehensive report looking at the way small firms and the wider economy are affected by poor payment practice. Our report, ‘Time to Act: The economic impact of poor payment practice’, has found that existing policy interventions have had no discernible effect on tackling problems around the UK’s poor payment culture in the last 5 years. Small businesses report that, on average, 30 per cent of payments are typically late compared with 28 per cent in 2011.

The impact on small businesses can be devastating. Our report shows that 37 percent have run into cash flow difficulties, 30 per cent have been forced to use an overdraft and 20 per cent say late payment has hit profits. At the extreme end, late payments and resulting cash flow difficulties have caused businesses to fail. In 2014, if payments had been made on time and as promised, 50,000 business deaths could have been avoided, growing the UK economy by £2.5 billion - a vital uplift to UK GDP just as business confidence dips amid fears of a weakening domestic economy. Mike Cherry, National Chairman at the

Federation of Small Businesses, said:

“Uniquely, the UK now risks having a business culture where it is acceptable not to pay SMEs on time. Based on an imbalance of power between large companies and their small suppliers, this now has a chilling effect right across the economy. It’s distressing to hear from our members that in 2016 the average value of each late payment now stands at £6,142. Small businesses have to run a tight ship with their cash flow, and as they struggle with increasing business costs on one hand and an uncertain domestic economy on the other. They should not also have to struggle with the stress, time and money required to chase overdue payments from corporate giants.” “This new evidence demonstrates why it’s so important, from both an ethical and an economic point of view, to address this issue head on. Payment culture is set at board level and supplier interest must be represented at the top of the chain. It’s something that CEOs and board members in big businesses must take responsibility for. Big businesses should respect the supply chain and stop using smaller businesses as a credit line by delaying payments and applying bullying tactics.”

Business Problems? By Mark Liddle from the Mark Liddle Partnership Thirty five years ago, I stood on Lambeth Bridge and threw my briefcase in the Thames saying 'never again will I work conventionally.' At the time I was MD of three companies, part of a large group, but I couldn't stand the politics. That was on a Thursday, the following day I went into my three offices and said goodbye to all my staff and put my car keys in the post box of the group head office and caught the train home. The following day I went to Italy for two weeks and on the first day back, I saw a Midland Bank manager, told him what I'd done and he said, "despite the fact you're young, you've had a lot of experience in running companies, I think you can help some of my customers." That's how I got into helping businesses make money and sorting out problems. So for thirty five years, I've been helping companies and it took me years to work out the one reason why a business makes money is the same reason

why a business loses money: FOCUS. Focus just on your skill, you'll never make money. Focus on profit and you'll make money. What you focus on is what you get. I just wish that companies who give credit to other Limited companies would do a search before giving credit. We have offered this service free of charge to numerous businesses but very few take up the offer. Want to know why? Because they are focussing on their skill, not on profit. I also wish directors/business owners take a debenture when they lend their companies money. Again, the majority don't. Lastly, if your business is a 50/50 share holding, make sure there is a "Shareholder Agreement" in place, as I have never seen a 50/50 shareholding work! Why Use an Insurance Broker? By John Palmer of Coversure Insurance When it comes to getting the best insurance policy for you, you’re always better off using an insurance broker. With the television swamped with meerkats and dancing robots advertising price comparison sites, it is not surprising that so many people look to comparison sites for what purports to be the cheapest insurance. But as the name suggests, price comparison sites are often, for legal and practical reasons, one dimensional in the result they give. Consequently, the insurance policies you’ll be shown are often generic and are effectively a one-size-fits-all solution. However, getting the right insurance for you is dependent on your exact individual circumstances, with the devil being in the detail. For this reason alone it is always better to use a broker when getting your insurances.

Insurance Brokers – Giving You Advice, Saving You Money Some people think that insurance brokers are just for people with little time or exceptional insurance circumstances. But if you’re thinking of buying an insurance policy for something you don’t know much about or insuring something unusual, an expert in the market such as an insurance broker can often find you better cover at a great price. Unlike comparison sites, a broker’s specialist expertise can give you the right product for your individual needs. For example, insurers won’t always offer you every type of cover when you go direct nor tell you if you’re already covered by any existing policies you may have. It’s not unusual for insurers to offer legal support, home maintenance,

Money Sins By Martin Lewis from MoneySavingExpert Are you a sinner? Financially that is. There are a host of everyday money misdemeanours that millions of people do, costing them thousands, without being aware of it. These aren’t horrors like grabbing a payday loan, but the result of simple misunderstandings, bad habits or inaction. So having recently toured around the UK doing roadshows for the sixth series of my ITV show, I’ve collated five of the most common. 1. Saving while you’ve expensive debts Savings rates are depressingly low – the top easy-access rate is 1%. Credit card and other interest rates are depressingly high. So, £1,000 credit card debt at 18% costs it costs you £180 a year, the same amount saved in top paying savings account at 1% interest only earns you £10. If you had both, pay the debt off with your savings and you'd be £170 a year better off. Many of you will be thinking, "but I want to keep my savings, what if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in?" However, that’s a sentimental strategy, not a logical one. Let’s carry on the £1,000 debt and £1,000 savings scenario to show you why. -- If you don’t pay the debt off with the savings and an emergency happens that cost you £1,000 to fix, you’d use all your savings and still £1,000 of credit card debt. -- If you do pay off the debt with the savings, and a £1,000 emergency Page 10

happens, you’d need to pay for it on your credit card, meaning you still have no savings and £1,000 of credit card debt. The end result of them both is the same, yet by paying off the debt with the savings, you save in the meantime. The only exception is if the debt is at 0%. Then the financially savvy and disciplined can do what’s called stoozing, where you deliberately build up 0% debt only to save it and earn interest. Though with current saving rates so low, it’s not as easy as it used to be. Full help on that at www.mse. me/stoozing 2. Not at least asking your energy firm are you on its cheapest deal Most people in the UK are on their energy firm’s standard tariff, which typically means they’re overpaying by £300 a year. I’ve talked about switching until I’m blue in the face, and, of course, the best plan is take five minutes to do a full market comparison via my www. CheapEnergyClub.com or any www. Ofgem.gov.uk approved comparison site. Yet for some that doesn’t hit home. So, let me be plain. Even if you won’t do that, just pick up the phone and ask your current provider “Am I on your cheapest tariff?” and, if not, switch to that as there’s no change but the price. For example, as I write (it can change daily), on EDF’s standard tariff someone with typical usage pays £1,070/year. It

MONEY MATTERS also has a 12-month fix at £880/year £190/year less. British Gas’s standard tariff with typical use is £1,044/year, but it also runs Sainsbury Energy (i.e., it’s the same company but a different name), and its cheapest fix is £804/year – saving £240/year. This don’t ask don’t get saving works at all the big firms, so if you won’t do a comparison, at least do this. 3. Only making the minimum repayments on credit cards Credit card minimum payments are based mostly on a percentage of the balance, which only just covers the interest. So, you hardly clear any off. A 30-year-old with £3,000 debt on a credit card at 17.9% interest, who made only typical minimum repayments, would take 27 years to clear it. By then, they’d be 57 and have paid a total cost £4,000 in interest (see my minimum repayment calc at www.mse.me/minrepay to work out how long it’ll take you). Now you may be thinking ‘easy to say, but I can’t afford more than the minimum.’ Well, I have a solution. On £3,000 debt, the current minimum is around £70 a month. If instead of opting to pay the minimum, fix your repayment at £70. The debt will clear in five years at a total cost of £1,500 in interest, saving £2,400. Though if you’ve debt on more than one credit card, focus all spare cash on repaying the most expensive, making only the minimums on the others. That way you get rid of the most expensive debts first. 4. Don’t cover your home’s value on buildings insurance Your house price is the wrong figure; you

only need to insure the usually much lower rebuild cost – literally how much it would cost to rebuild your home should it get knocked down. This is often far less than the market value. There’s information and a calculator on this at http://abi.bcis. co.uk. 5. Saving or borrowing to pay your children’s tuition fees I’m often freaked out by parents telling me they’re saved up so their child won’t have to pay tuition fees at uni. Worse, some even extend their mortgage. My problem isn’t just that it’s actually students’, not parents’ responsibility to repay this… All new English full-time students can get a tuition fee loan and a living loan to help pay for uni costs. You’re eligible to start repaying in the April after leaving, but only if you earn over £21,000, and you repay 9% above that. Repayments stop after 30 years. In many ways, it acts far more like a tax than a loan, and how many would save “in case my child earns enough to be a higher rate taxpayer”? An extreme example provides clarity. Imagine your child goes to uni and becomes a brilliant poet, who never earns above the £21,000 threshold. They would never repay a penny. So, if you paid the fees for them, you’d throw £27,000 away. Most of course will earn over the threshold. However only high earners will earn enough to repay in real terms what they borrowed within the 30 years. If not, again it means pay their tuition fees and you’re paying more than they’d need to repay.
