Nothing But Good News Magazine - Summer 2014

From the Editor A Message from Kandee G This issue of Nothing But Good News Magazine and the theme from many of our contributors comes from an old Apple ad campaign urging us all to think differently. One of my favorite quotes: “Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” In this issue you will find that it is practical to be ”crazy,” how being a rebel can increase your happiness and what to do when you don’t fit in. Whistle as you work and just listen to those voices in your head! I am ecstatic to share one of my all time favorite restaurants and a new twist on an old favorite sandwich from a great new chef. Like always, this issue is packed with great ideas, inspiration, hope and ways to help you on your path. My goal with this issue is to give you the inspiration to awaken to your life’s journey, and if you feel you are already have, then to give you the courage to keep going. Make your journey the most amazing ever. A huge thanks to all of our contributors, advertisers and especially YOU, the reader. All of whom make it possible to send you issue after issue of Nothing But Good News! Carve out some quiet time, and really focus on what you are reading. It really is OK to have some time with you. Allow our Nothing But Good News team to take you on a respite. Let these articles and features inspire you to action. With this issue we celebrate eight years of Nothing But Good News Magazine. To celebrate you, our loyal readership, we have vastly reduced our ad rates for the next issue, so you can be a part with us! See page 55. Whistle AS You Work! (do, de, doot, doot, doot, de, do...) By David Hall

Station, upper level, and whistle your brains out there in anonymity…I mean the sound is just heavenly (if you can carry a tune, of course). Are you getting this TripAdvisor? In San Francisco, there’s this amazing place called the Palace of Fine Arts, erected in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exhibition, the “World’s Fair” of its day. It stands out at the base of the Golden Gate bridge on-ramp. Located outside, this monolithic icon, must be, I don’t know, 300 feet tall? It’s a beautiful rotunda, a tribute to Greek and Roman architecture. Anyhoo, the sound, the echo, the pure vibrations are uncanny. You must get there if for no other reason than to hear the acoustics for yourself! So why share this tidbit with you at this So there’s this guy I know who just time? More than I whistle all the time. It’s simply anything, my passion to melodically automatic. It’s my subconscious whistle led me to the Guinness Book of joy. What the heck? work, longer than any human being in recorded history! What drives a man, you ask, to even WANT to attempt this amazing feat? Passion plays a part, global domination, perhaps. Whistling a happy tune almost always puts a smile on your face. So, in good fun, and good taste and using a lot of hot air, I went for it. Little known trivia in the world of fringe performance…this author succeeded in his quest. Yup! David Harpo Hall whistled for over 24 hours, non-stop, as documented by the Guinness Book of World Records on April Fools Day,1983. The record, as far as I can tell, still stands to this day. Upon establishing the record, I called my mom in New York, to proclaim, she’s now “Whistler’s Mother”, ref: James McNeill Whistler’s classic, Oil on Canvas of the same name, 1871. No such title for Whistler’s Father!.

Yes, I made my indelible mark on history, with a talent that I am truly proud to say is available to us all. With tongue, teeth and desire, whistling may be the essence of the universal language of music! (It is THAT significant!!). By the

The youngest of four, David was clamoring for attention at an early age. Maturing to “class clown” in his hometown of Mt. Vernon, NY, David studied “tech theatre” at SUNY Binghamton, all the while looking to travel abroad. He worked at Empire Airlines at JFK, before moving out west to the hills of Berkeley, CA. It is there where he discovered his love of whistling, hitchhiking, nature walks amongst the redwoods and otherwise “finding himself”. Today, David is a proud parent of his Unity School graduate, Jaxson Hall. Single and fun-loving, David divides his time as owner of The Hall Way, a “consulting with a conscience” marketing firm, with whistling, frisbee, world travel, photography and lots of massage.

Article Why Being a Rebel will Increase Happiness By Jamie Kulaga

The patterns of thought about giving become so ingrained in our minds, that doing things for ourselves seem both out of place and downright rude. Should you really be hitting that gym after work when you haven’t seen the kids in the past 9 hours? That’s guilt talking. But, if you want to make a difference, you have to break the rule, go to the gym anyway.

The crazy ones, the misfits and the rebels, they break through societies limits. These are the SuperWomen. The women who set boundaries, say “No” and do more for themselves than for anyone else. The craziest part about them, they have no guilt as they engage in these activities. They change things, like their life fulfillment and overall happiness. And while the Jones’s see them as crazy, they are managing their families, jobs and selves better than anyone we know. This is a SuperWoman. As I coach and educate women on work-life balance, I have yet to have a woman put herself on her list of top life roles. Society has had this great way of pushing women into certain roles and into thinking certain things. Initially, when we first play wife and then quickly play mom and professional guru, we are excited and genuinely open to giving to others again and again. But quickly, the game of Giving gets boring. When a woman goes to change up the game by adding some excitement, either society makes her feel guilty or she makes herself feel guilty for doing so.

I have children, I have a husband, I have a job, and the only reason my family is happy is because even on the longest days, I hit the gym. Because I do things for me, I am happier, more fulfilled and more excited about life. This attitude rubs off positively on my family. Indirectly, I am also modeling work-life balance behaviors for my young children and also indirectly letting my husband know it is okay if he needs time to find healthy fulfillment, too.

for me when every minute of my day is packed?” I am here to tell you that every minute of your day is not packed. I am busy too, I get it. But there is a difference between being busy and being productive. Talking to negative Nancy in the office about how much she hates her job, wastes your valuable time. How many days have you stayed late at work because you just had “so much to do?” Think about some of the activities you didn’t need to do at work that could have helped you to focus better so you could have gotten out on time. How many minutes were you on social media today? Was it more than 10? If so, you could have downloaded an app on your phone and done a 10 minute cardio or toning video. How many times did you say “yes” to taking on an extra role you knew from the start you should have said “No” to? All these extra roles take away the potential for time you could use to focus on you. When you say “No” to taking on roles you don’t want, the payoff is in the end. Keep the end result in mind. Think before saying “yes” to someone about taking on an extra life role. Retreat, Rethink and then React when making decisions.

I guess the million dollar question is, “How in the world can I find time

Summer 2014 - Kandee G Enterprises

Also, when you are with the people who mean the most to you in life, give them your attention. If you are playing with the kiddos, understand that 4 hours of time with them while you are multitasking is equivalent to 20-30 minutes with no cell phone or computer near you as you sit on the floor playing princess or trains. You might feel like you are “wasting time” but this is actually giving them the best of your time because they see it as valuable. Because of this, they will be more accepting of time you give to

Aeature rticle F yourself.

For the next week, be a misfit and a rebel. Let the Jones’s think you are crazy. This week select one of the following: 1. Say “No” to one request that you don’t want to take on. 2. Do, and then check something off the bucket list. 3. If you don’t exercise, this week workout 2 times for 20 minutes.

Same goes for your spouse. If you finally get that date night, don’t spend it talking about the kids and work. If you have no clue what to talk about, reminisce about “the good old days,” play the “what if” game or just create something to spark intimacy between you two, because that is ultimately why you wanted date night in the first place.

4. Don’t gossip or listen to gossip all week. 5. Be productive versus busy (focus on your moment to moment routine for this). 6. Schedule a date night with your spouse; don’t talk about work or family.

Aeature rticle F Is there a Continuum of Crazy? By Liz Sterling

Take it down a notch and try to fit in.” I cried when I said these words because in my heart I felt like a traitor to his spirit. Yes, there are round people who place themselves in round holes, abide by the norms, zip it when they are told to and would rather not stir things up. Just the other day, I was having breakfast with an older lady friend. I know she loves rye bread with her poached eggs but when a bagel was served on the plate, rather than ask for what she wanted, she remained silent and ate what was given. This scenario is simple but important.

Life is an adventure and I tend to make up my own rules; yet I’ve noticed that blind faith, shooting from the hip and gut instinct work really well with being peaceful and balanced. Sometimes it feels like there is a big plan of which I am a little part but other times, no plan and I wait inside the proverbial question mark. What’s it like for you? Do you ever feel that life is a great mystery where the corner pieces of the puzzle, once put in place, morph, and the ideology that was once a cushion becomes an anchor. Years ago, I was at a Sunday Service and heard a sermon. “Don’t settle for being NORMAL,” the speaker elucidated. “Go be one of the crazy ones. Live your passion, break new ground, and don’t try to make others happy by surrendering your innovative self. Go forth boldly and be proud of your uniqueness.” I was on my feet! Clapping and rejoicing. Someone had

16

just told me I was OK the way I was. I felt the wild, free-spirited, creative hunger that longed for new ideas and dreamed of being liberated from the old trajectory of a dying paradigm being born. I celebrated the possibilities of forging ahead. I embraced being crazy, and added a bonus to the mix by thinking I could do things my way and knew what was right. I think we all secretly desire to be in the cadre of the “crazy ones” who throw aside societal norms and allow our souls to become our guide. Unbridled and carefree, yes, yes, yes, that’s how I longed to be. But society has a way of conditioning our boldness and structuring our thinking. I remember the day I was torn in two. I had to tell my son to fit in. “Andrew,” I said, “This is the hardest thing I will ever have to do. Your zest for life is great and I love it but it’s too much for others. Your energy is disruptive and you will have to conform to society.

Summer 2014 - Kandee G Enterprises

You see, I have been living like a bull in a china shop; headstrong, running after the Holy Grail, forging my own way and racing forward against time. Yes, I may be motivated by deep inner forces but sometimes, when I leave track marks in the dirt and others may be hurt, I am compelled to pause.

Article “I think we all secretly desire to be in the cadre of the “crazy ones” who throw aside societal norms and allow our souls to become our guide.” So the question I ask myself today is where on this continuum of crazy do I want to be? How much do I need to be heard, have my way, get what I think I deserve, make might right? Maybe the lesson I taught my son isn’t so bad. Maybe there is a middle ground. Spiritual teacher and mentor, Ram Dass comes to mind and many of my other teachers who suggest we learn to moderate our ego, tame the personality and monitor one’s propensity to run the show and be in control. I may have overstepped my boundaries when I was given permission to call myself a crazy one and included making my own rules. Maybe my soul is asking me to realize that I can learn from others and let go of

the small stuff. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to occasionally accept what comes on my plate. Could it be time to balance crazy with normal? Maybe that will be new territory for my soul to explore on this great and daring adventure!

Obsession and Optimism By David Mezzapelle

Dennis Boulud, chef and restaurateur, said it best, “Your ambition drives your obsession and your obsession drives your ambition.” Many people, myself included, tend to associate obsession with craziness, usually in a good way. However, there are others that believe obsession is something negative. Unless obsession is causing harm to others, I believe it’s a wonderful thing that has the ability to harness our focus and actually lead to amazing things. Obsessions are responsible for so much human greatness and accomplishment throughout history. There are countless men and women who have revolutionized and changed the world for the better. There were many people in my life that felt that writing my book, Contagious Optimism, for all those years, and consistently trying to build the brand, was crazy. They could not grasp the fact that I would take the risk of not having an income and, instead, spend so much time on something that may never go anywhere. Many referred to me as being an “obsessed entrepreneur” or a “lone nut trying to create a movement.” I have always taken extreme risk since I was young and clearly that trait has not subsided. However, when I stumbled on my passion for capturing real stories from real people, and sharing them with others through various outlets, there was no turning back. Time seemed to alter its state and my determination to make this project successful became front and center. Stopping the process almost seemed impossible based on the path I was on. I don’t think this is an uncommon feeling based on what I have learned from famous inventors, industrialists, and athletes.

18

www.kandeeg.com

In the process of connecting with people on a global scale and hearing their stories, I learned a great deal about the elements of success. I learned that most people are naturally resilient even when facing extreme obstacles and adversity. I learned that perseverance, when combined with obsession and optimism, will always lead to a favorable outcome as long as you stay the course. And, last, I learned that when people are going through tough times, they tend to think they’re alone. However, when they hear stories of how others have persevered, it gives them hope. The compounding effect of these stories, and the importance of continuing to capture them in order to help others, is my obsession and something I wholeheartedly believe can make the world a better place. So many people refer to Apple today as “revolutionary” because of their popular products of the last few years. However, do you recall their highly unique ad campaign back in 1997? It states, “Here’s To The Crazy Ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes; the ones who see things differently. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world - are the ones who DO!” This campaign was risky but that didn’t stop them. They were confident in their mission and were optimistic they would be successful. This campaign isolated the social norm and gave the impression that it only appealed to a small demographic. However, it was actually brilliant in nature because everyone, in essence, wants to impact the world in some way. Even the most

passive person would like to know that their footprint will make an impression somewhere and leave a legacy. Because of that, this ad appealed to more people than one would imagine. More importantly, the Apple ad was true. It is the crazy ones who launch revolutionary ideas that lead to change in the world. It is their passion and obsession that keeps them on the path of perseverance. They see no obstacles because, in their determination, there are no obstacles!

Looking after the baby taught me to take care of my health. I began feeding the baby organic fruits and vegetables as part of a well-balanced diet. One day, I realized I was eating junk and feeding her a nutritious diet. I had to rethink my own eating habits. Once I changed my diet, I had a healthier mind, body and spirit, which made me a better mother and a better worker. As a new mother, I received some of the best advice I had ever heard: “When youget overloaded and don’t know what to do – STOP – regroup and start fresh the next day.” When I feel stressed and overwhelmed in my jobs, I stop for the day. I use the rest of the day to spend with the baby, relax and clear my mind. When I start again the next morning, I am more productive. Feature A rticle We Speak Ourselves Into The World By Chalmers Brothers

The United States of America was declared into being. That’s what the Declaration of Independence is all about. Now there was work to do after that, certainly. But without the Declaration, this country does not exist. Companies of all sizes and shapes are declared into being, as well. Check out the articles of incorporation and virtually all will include the phrase “… hereby declare…” and as of a given date, the company exists.

We speak ourselves into the world. We speak ourselves into transformation, or not. We speak ourselves into new possibilities and new results in our lives, or not. And we are all doing this, whether we’re aware of it or not. For the past 20+ years, my life has been devoted to sharing a profoundly powerful understanding: Language is far more than a “tool for communication” or a “way of describing how things are.” Instead, language creates and generates. With our language (internal and external conversations) we are doing a great deal more than communicating or describing. This is so close we often miss it. But noticing this is the necessary first step in any process of meaningful change or

improvement. The simple act of saying “yes” or saying “no” moves us in the world one way or another – some doors opening, some doors closing. We’re not describing here at all. If we agree to have lunch tomorrow at noon, we just invented a tomorrow that 5 seconds ago was not going to happen! We’re not describing, we’re making something happen. How do we go from being not married to being married? Somebody says something, of course! And it’s meaningfully different being married than not being married. We speak ourselves into the world, and it’s not trivial.

The ability to say (or think) “I don’t know” doesn’t describe a state of affairs. It produces something: a context for learning. Not physical, but very real. Regardless of subject matter, saying or thinking “I don’t know” is a powerful pre-requisite for learning. Think about it. How much learning takes place in a teaching situation when the learner thinks they already know it? Zero. I’m not claiming we don’t describe with our language. What I’m saying is, that’s not all that we do. And it’s this whole other “not all that we do” that’s worth paying attention to. A second key to this way of understanding is this: We live in language. All of us, no exceptions. It’s the “little voice” inside. One of my favorite quotes is from Mark Twain. He said: “I’m always in conversation, and sometimes other people are

We are each swimming in an ocean of stories, explanations and beliefs… all of which live in language, and most of which we have long since forgotten that we authored. Some of these absolutely do not take us today – and will not take us tomorrow – where we say we want to go. we are required to give back and use these abilities to help others. OK. Back to the little voice telling me I should go … It triggers the only rational reaction, that I can think of: “I must be crazy - it’s too …” and then –for the next month and a half– I come up with every excuse, why I shouldn’t go: …too dangerous, …too complicated, …too inexperienced, … too unneeded, … but that little voice in my head is not quitting. It’s trying to get me to see this vision. “You’re crazy.” “You’re going to die.” “You’re out of your mind.” That’s the normal response I’m getting from my friends, when I tell them about my plans to go to Afghanistan. It’s almost unanimous. Everybody agrees that I’m crazy for even considering this idea. Before you stop reading, because you also think I’m nuts - let me back up 6 months and tell you a little bit about myself: It’s the summer of 2011. At this point I’ve been a professional photographer for almost 20 years, but only started making little video projects for my clients earlier that year, when a little voice pops into my head: “You should go to Afghanistan and make a movie for a humanitarian flight service.” Where did that come from? I believe that we are born with natural abilities, God given gifts. Things we can just do, without going to school for them, without buying them, without forcing ourselves to learn. They come naturally to us - we all have them. I also believe that because these are gifts,

“Your inspiration is in heaven, but your brains are in your feet.” In other words get your head out of the clouds, get off your butt and get going. Do impossible odds inspire you? Do you go after the crazy idea? Are you listening to that still small voice inside your head that’s trying to show you a glimpse at an unreal(-ized) vision? Or is your life so loud, so crazy, so insane that you can’t hear the whispers of greatness, that are coming from out of your mind?

Finally I write an email that reads: “I have this crazy idea …” fully expecting an answer that reads …too dangerous, …too complicated, …too inexperienced, …too unneeded, … but what I get in return (2 weeks later) is an invitation to come to Kabul and create a short film about their humanitarian work in Afghanistan. Well, but just an idea and an invitation is a far cry from doing anything. Over the next few months as we’re planning, preparing and producing all the details that go into filming a documentary film, half way around the world, in some of the worst environments you can image, I feel a passion growing for this project. I’m getting really excited and tell my friends about this dream I have to go. Which gets us right back to: “You’re crazy.” “You’re going to die.” “You’re out of your mind.” How do you act, when everybody around you says your attempting the impossible? Even if you have a vision and a passion to go after that unreachable goal you need one more ingredient. Action. The Afghans say

A rticle Feature The Practicalities of Being ‘Crazy’ By Michael E. Thorn

even chart a general path as to how to get there, it is up to the managers and administrators to actually make it happen. These roles are not nearly as glamorous, but essential nonetheless. These are the people in the trenches of evolution, the ones who know how the system works, what resources are available, and how to get things done. They are the unsung heroes of the growth, development, and advancement of crazy ideas that we term ‘progress.’ Any good leader is implicitly aware of this as very few innovations can be accomplished by oneself. Rather, it takes the proverbial village to bring forth a transformation, a village that works together toward a known objective. This is where the ‘crazy one’ becomes a transformational leader – a leader that inspires a focused change effort by appealing to workers’ sense of identification and self-esteem to achieve personal goals that are congruent with the overall organizational goal. This ‘focused change effort’ contains a fundamental point to be recognized. Any good leader requires exceptional skills in the art and science of communication. This is where the complementary aspect of the genius so often associated with the ‘crazy one’ comes into play. Very simply, the best of ideas will be doomed to failure with a lack of effective communication.

“Here’s to the crazy ones …” To my mind, and I suspect the minds of many others, this phrase conjures up images of rapt admiration and congratulations to those who dare to go beyond the standard, to do wild and wonderful things beyond the pale of expectations. It honors the non-conformists, the ones who have the imagination and foresight to see beyond the normal of ‘what is’ to a totally different arena of ‘what could be’. And, make no mistake, these wild and wonderful people are sorely needed in a world of routine and day-to-day systems that value regularity and adherence to norms. They virtually define the term ‘progress.’ The ‘crazy ones’ are often identified as visionaries and transformational leaders, people out in front of, or actually setting, trends and expectations. They are not bound by convention, nor do they have a high regard for the bonds that many of us observe as a normal part of acceptable behavior. As a consequence, they are often viewed as heroes and rewarded accordingly... or they fail miserably and are cast aside to be rapidly scorned and then forgotten.

28

This difference between unparalleled success and ignominious failure is the bailiwick of the ordinary mortals among us – the people who may not be inspired, but who nonetheless get the job done. While the ‘crazy ones’ may set the distant objective and

When you strip away the glitter and glamour of a new idea, a crazy thought, you come to the realization that it is easy to be crazy, but it requires a significant amount of planning, coordination, and hard work to be successful in the translation of that idea into a meaningful action or product. Perhaps that is why one of the key definitions of ‘crazy’ is ‘distracted with desire and excitement.’ Clearly, to move beyond the synonyms of absurd, bizarre,

AFrticle eature fanciful, preposterous to the antonyms of clear, lucid, judicious, normal is a step of major proportions, requiring a great deal of faith and foresight. When you view it that way, you do, in fact, have to be crazy to even attempt it. Therein lies the essence of ‘a crazy one’ – someone who has the imagination of a visionary and the work ethic to make it a part of our common, daily lives. My Summer Sandwich By Cody Tiner

2 slices sharp cheddar (one per sandwich) 4 slices 100 percent whole-grain bread 2 tablespoons butter Procedure: Leaving out the cheese, bread, and butter; mix all other ingredients in a small bowl and chill. Lie out your bread, and divide the tuna salad evenly between two slices. Top with cheese and the other slice of bread. While preparing the sandwiches, bring a skillet or sauté pan to medium heat, and drop one tablespoon of butter into the pan per sandwich. Grill on each side for about two minutes or until golden brown. Finally, a nice thick slice of beefsteak tomato and crisp lettuce are a great addition. Cut in half, and enjoy a piece of my childhood! Every child has his or her favorite dish growing up, whether it is mac n’ cheese, pb & j or pizza. Today, many kids grow up eating fast food, prepackaged meals, and frozen dinners. When I was growing up; my mother made every meal from scratch. During the summer, mom would come home for her lunch break and make my favorite meal, a tuna melt. It meant so much to me. I would sit at the bar in our kitchen and ask about her day, then stuff my face before an adventurous afternoon on the town. The precocious child I was, I often tried to emulate her ability to blend a few simple ingredients into a fantastic sandwich. My little experiments did not always end with great results, but they helped me become the chef I am now. Today, as one of the kitchen managers in a French inspired bistro and patisserie, my cooking has indefinitely become more refined.

Braising meats and creating luscious reductions of wines are but a part of my job now; no longer do I squander away on that simple sandwich in my mother’s kitchen. Still, on some hot summer days, I always find my way back to making the only sandwich that mattered to me, that tuna melt. I make it not only for the fond memories, but as a simple meal that will satisfy anyone! Yield: 2 Total time: 20 minutes Ingredients: 1 5-oz can of tuna in water 2 tablespoons Duke’s mayonnaise 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 egg, boiled, cooled, and roughly chopped 1 tablespoon dill pickle small diced 1 tablespoon small-diced onion ½ tsp black pepper ½ tsp Creole spice (I use tony Chachere’s) 1 pinch of sugar

imagination? * What does that feel like? * What would I do if I weren’t afraid? * What would fearlessness feel like?

Spirit Recovery Medicine Bag is a guide for finding the way back to one’s personal truth, authenticity and purpose by shedding the stories that we tell ourselves about or own lives. The book draws on Native American and shamanistic traditions, Eastern practices, universal spiritual pathways, and a medicine bag of other heartopening methodologies developed by two seasoned experts, Lee McCormick and Mary Falkner. Readers are given the tools to step away from addictive, compulsive behaviors that hold them back, so they experience real happiness and joy as their spirit soars-Living Happy, Joyous and Free! The following exercises from the book are highly transformational. You will be awakening aspects of yourself that you have possibly been out of touch with for a long time. Work slowly and repeat exercises as needed. Exercise 1--Exploring Your Hopes and Dreams Your journey in consciousness begins by exploring your hopes and dreams. This is the first step in claiming your truth. To explore your hopes and dreams, consider these questions: * What do I long for? * What does it feel like? * What about life hooks my

Writing down your answers in your journal makes them more powerful. Sharing them with someone else makes them even more powerful. While transformation is personal, it happens best when we work together. Keep your list handy, as you will be referring back to it during these exercises and as you practice them in the future. Exercise Dream

2--Dreaming

the

New

Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted for an hour or so. Get comfortable, relax, and allow yourself to get in touch with your deep hopes and dreams. You might begin with the question we often ask kids, What do you want to be when you grow up? If you have any trouble finding an answer, give the question more time. Put it on the back burner. There is no need to rush to find your answers. Your brain is wired for curiosity and creativity-it likes wondering, and it will find your answer. You don’t have to know before you know. Next, change the focus from your career goals to the type of person you want to be. What qualities or characteristics do you want to embody? For example, transformation encourages us to live from the heart, cultivate a positive mind, be of service, and live honestly. What values or characteristics would this require-for example, creativity, bravery, humor, cooperation, peace? In your journal, make a list and don’t

worry about how you can develop these qualities. They are on the human hard drive; you just have to download them and live them. From the items on your list, pick the top three-the ones you most want to have in your life. Now select one, and imagine how it feels to have this quality. Experience this quality emotionally, and breathe it in fully. Keep imagining your life with this quality until you can feel it physically. Notice where in your body the feeling resonates. Toxic beliefs that cloud your new vision begin to come to mind, giving you the opportunity to choose to invest in them further or let them go. Some will dissolve on their own. Others may require deeper investigation. This is you transforming into you. Exercise 3--Transforming Blocks Taking the top quality you identified in the second part of Exercise 2, close your eyes, and breathe down into your belly. Speaking to wise mind (the intuitive part of you), ask what gets in the way of fully living the quality you have chosen to embody-for example, if you chose the quality creativity, ask, “What is blocking me from experiencing my creativity?” Sit quietly with that question while your deep memory searches the files. Did someone tell me I wasn’t creative (or beautiful or handsome or wonderful . . . )? Did I believe it? Do I need to believe it now? There may be more than one message or belief involved, but you don’t have to locate every single thing that’s part of the block. Often one or two toxic messages will unlock the whole mess.

This process is natural; allow it to happen rather than putting demands on yourself. There may be more than one message or belief involved, but you don’t have to locate every single thing that’s part of the block. Often one or two toxic messages will unlock the whole mess. This process is natural; allow it to happen rather than putting demands on yourself. Exercise 4--Dreaming the Real You Anything less than loving yourself indicates you are living a nightmare, not dreaming an awakened dream. This exercise will help you get out of the bad dream and into the one that was written on your heart by your creator. Talk, write, and/or draw pictures about your transformed life and your ideal self until you feel the feelings of it and it begins to feel like it’s yours. Notice where in your body you feel these emotions, and breathe into those areas, grounding them in your bodygiving them life. Practice consciously breathing into the feelings or the sense of your ideal self for several minutes each night as you are going to sleep and again when you first wake up. At those times and at intervals throughout the day, the brain naturally slows down into what are called alpha brainwaves-a highly creative and healing state of mind. During those intervals, energizing your dream is most effective. As you imagine your ideal self and your transformed life, notice what blocks you from fully entering this new dream. Notice where your mind wants

40

www.kandeeg.com

to take you-for example, you might find it saying things like “Wake up and get real; you’re just daydreaming,” “Life isn’t like that,” and “Yeah, right . . .” Write these blocks down or create a drawing or other piece of art that represents them. Often, there may be additional subconscious beliefs holding you back, such as “I don’t deserve . . .,” I can’t do . . .,” “I’m just crazy; it’s useless . . .,” “If I change, it will mean I was wrong all these years . . .,” and so on. When you have identified the blocks and are ready to give them up, create a ceremony in which you will symbolize letting them go and allowing them to transform. Fire and water are traditional symbols of transformation. Letting go of beliefs we have carried throughout life can be challenging, but it is totally possible. It’s not unusual to repeat and repeat and repeat your efforts--each time reaching deeper into yourself. You are clearing patterns that have come down through your genetics for generations. It’s like peeling the onion--one layer uncovers another and another and another. In cases of childhood trauma, the patterns are stored deep in the limbic system, and, in addition to your sincere intention and steadfast attention, healing them may require therapeutic assistance. The limbic system can be updated. You can heal. Don’t give up before the miracle, and get more help if you need it. Article An excerpt from “Thrown to the Wolves” By Author Sissi Jane Symone

The next day it was as if nothing happened. That was in the beginning. I think the age difference had something, to do with her getting her way. She would always tell him you know you want some of this as she ran her fingers through his silky hair. Whatever this was, I never figured it. I never saw anything strange just heard a lot of moaning as if she was in pain. The strangest thing she would yell, scream, and call him her Daddy. He was our Daddy but I guess she was so juiced up she thought he was hers. She was really confused poor Momma. In the middle of the night in the other guest room upstairs, we would hear Daddy moaning and panting as if he was out of breath. “Oh baby you know you want Daddy” and she would in turn tell him to “come to Momma”. I guess she wanted her Daddy and he was so upset he wanted his Momma. I guess that’s how they made up by calling on their Dad and Mom. The next day all was well. My Daddy was about twenty years older than my Momma was. However after a while it didn’t matter my Daddy stopped letting Momma get by with the coming in, and, making a scene. I can remember one time she was” full”, as Daddy would say, Momma, and, Daddy got into it. “Damn you Aye I know you are running around on me! You need to get your drunken butt up and get in the bed. I’m getting rea-a-l tired of you going off with those sisters of yours. You don’t even invite me so what’s up with that? You think I don’t know what is going on. Shit, I’m tired. I go to work and come home to this,” he said.

www.kandeeg.com

“Oh shut up Ray you’re not the only one who works. I contribute t-too”, with her words slurring. Daddy really didn’t know what Momma went through to work and get money. Daddy got right in her face, he said, “You actually call working with the rich old couple the Bloomers work. They only call you to cook when they have a party. You call going to cleaning the old farmer Lynch’s house, once every blue moon helping. “Well that isn’t shit Aye, but I guess in your condition that is all you would be able to do. You best be glad I love you girl or I would divorce you. I telling you if you keep it up I’m going to do it.” Momma’s got a job and it aint easy! The Bloomers weren’t all that nice; they used to send home their scraps. Insisting on Momma taking them, or, should I say forcing her to take them. Once we got home, she threw them to the dogs. Momma would say. “The old bastards we aren’t dogs or charity cases. You kids remember that you hear me. We all said, “Yes Momma we will remember.” Actually, I loved going to work with momma at both places; The Bloomers had a fishpond with a beautiful water fountain, and pretty big orange fish in it. I used to sit and stare at them. I liked to go to old man Lynches farm because Momma would sneak in the bedroom dresser drawer where he kept his candy Red Hot’s. She would let us get a big handful, they were shaped like a heart. Momma would tell us from my heart to yours. I don’t think he ever knew. Even

though, one time, I heard him make the comment to Momma, “man I didn’t realize I ate that many Hot’s”. He said to her, “those kids of yours sure love to drink water that’s good Mrs. Aryanna. You got them trained to keep quiet too. With the exception of this little one right here”, (pointing to Angell), as she rolled her eyes at him. The old man didn’t know we were drinking water and keeping our mouth closed that was full of his Red Hot’s because our mouth was on fire. “Yes sir, they are good children.” Momma said, as she hurried us down the lane to the road. We used to walk home from work even though he came to pick us up. He would always tell Momma to get her pretty little self in the truck.” He would tell Momma to get in the middle and Dicki rode on the passenger side by the door. He told Angell and me to get in back. Momma said. “Now Mr. Lynch I’m just coming to work you stop all that frisky business”, as she moved his hand off her leg the whole ride to his house. However, I can remember I used to see through the back window Mr. Lynch place his hand on momma leg in the truck. Angell yelled through the window, “Mr. Lynch now you leave my Momma alone her isn’t liken that!” “He said, “Huh, what’s that child keeping that entire racket up about?” Momma said yelling, “I don’t think she likes you putting your hand on my knee.” He said, “Oh darling I’m harmless

Article Sissi is a firm believer that no matter how tough life can get, no matter how many times you fall down, with God walking next to you, you can and will overcome it all. (looking up at the rear view mirror to Angell), I isn’t going to hurt her pretty little self never mind you now. You sit back there and hush ok.” Angell yelled, “Yes sir”! Under her breath she said, “Nasty old man I should tell daddy he would whoop that old man’s ass”. She never told she knew Momma needed the money. The truck slowed down, and he try to put his hand down her blouse; Momma fought him all the way, he gave in and left her alone.

Ever since Sissi was a young girl she always felt this excitement about her own life experiences knowing that some of them were “unmentionable, consensual” behaviors. Throughout her life she has learned to overcome some major diversities. Article What Do You Do When You Don’t Fit In? Redefine Yourself! By Hank Eder

we could accomplish if we celebrated our similarity rather than dwelling on our differences. The same applies to race, ethnicity, and national origin. We’re all dwellers on “Spaceship Earth” (to quote Buckminster Fuller). I keep wondering why more of us don’t act like it!

One of my favorite records back in high school was the first King Crimson album. The song, “I Talk To the Wind,” seemed to sum me up perfectly. “I’m on the outside looking inside…”

Another glaring aspect of duality is the vast political divide. News flash: The seemingly bridgeless gap between left and right is just another false divide. As long as we keep arguing about ideology, we remain blind to all the beautiful things we can do to make our world a better place. All the noise is intended to keep us from looking past the illusion and realizing how great we all are. Once we break through to our own greatness, there will be no stopping us!

I always found it hard to fit in. Groucho Marx used to say, “I’d never join a club that would have me as a member.” I can’t say I agree with Groucho. I would join such a club. On occasion, I have. The trick has always been finding something beyond the noise and confusion of popular culture. Even now, that’s still the trick. What is it about mass consciousness that fills us with such illusions of duality? We have male and female, along with the notion that there should be some kind of “battle of the sexes.” I’ve always fancied myself a feminist, but even more so a humanist. I believe the divide between us (beyond the physical nature of chromosomes and hormones) is not all it’s built up to be. As humans on this planet, imagine what

I’ve heard it said that we’re not really afraid of failure. We’re really afraid of waking up and discovering the absolute awesomeness that is us

inside. Well, you know what? It’s time to walk right through the fear and awaken to the greatness of our true selves. And once we face ourselves – our true selves – there’s little else left in the world to fear. The Dreamers, the Doers, the Visionaries – these are the folks among us who don’t fit in. I have a friend who became a music producer in the 80s. Some of his albums went platinum. I worked with him in a nine-to-five job. He had a small music studio, and he’d go there at night to produce music. The others in our department ridiculed him. They called him Disco Duck, One day I told him, “Lewis, keep chasing your dream. The people who are making fun of you go home at night and watch TV sitcoms. You are daring to dream. Beyond that, you’re taking action for your future. Just grin and ignore them.” Lewis went on to produce one of the 80s most popular female dance music acts. He followed his dreams and learned to ignore the naysayers. So where do folks who don’t fit in go to fit in? The answer lies within, in that deep wellspring of creativity and endless possibility. By not defining ourselves though the norms of popular culture, we are free to choose our own definition. In our self-definition lies the power to achieve the greatness that is our birthright. No one else can define us. Until we learn this, we float through life as the effect of someone else’s notion. However, when we stand firm within our power, we become the ultimate shape-shifter, rearranging ourselves to align with the fondest desires of our hearts. We all know what that is. We haven’t really forgotten. It might be on a dusty back shelf somewhere in

A True Story...

From the Files of Second Chance Society

“My friend said, “ I have no sympathy, he knew what he was getting into when he started drugs.” I had just told my friend a little about Scott (not his real name).”

“A True Story from Second Chance Society” My friend said, “ I have no sympathy, he knew what he was getting into when he started drugs.” I had just told my friend a little about Scott (not his real name). Scott had been referred to us by Bridges of America. Scott was still incarcerated but was now in a group that was being groomed to be released later in the year. Scott had been sent to prison for six years for selling cocaine. He was doing that to get money for his own habit. I then told my friend all I knew about Scott. He was born in a hospital but his mother left the hospital and never picked up her infant son. The grandmother finally came and took him home with her. She had several children of her own at that time, most of whom were in their teens and causing her a lot of trouble. They lived in a bad neighborhood but Grandmother could not afford to live in a better area. The teens were all running with the wrong crowd and had started using drugs. Grandmother tried to watch over her children, but she was forced to work long hours outside the home in order to put food on the table. Scott grew up being left alone much of the time. When he was six, he

started to attend public school and he loved it. In the second grade, though, something happened that would change his life forever. He saw his aunts and uncles using drugs and knew that Grandmother had forbidden them to do such things. He threatened to tell Grandmother and they said they would give him some of the drug if he would not tell on them. It was then that he started using, and he, too, quickly became addicted. By the seventh grade, he dropped out of school.

knew his mother and father as they disappeared from the area shortly after he was born. His wife has remarried, but he still has some contact with his children who are now 14, 12 and 11.

When he was twenty, Scott married and for a while, he tried hard to give up drugs. He loved his wife very much and he wanted to have a family and be a good father. Three children came along, but, unfortunately, when Scott lost a job he liked very much, drugs came back into his life. His wife finally divorced him and took the children with her. He said in the interview that “crime became a way for me to survive.”

In the last five years in prison, Scott has found that life is much better when drugs are not involved. He started going to church and became a Christian. Grandmother died while he was in prison and he has lost all contact with the aunts and uncles with whom he grew up. He never

However, he will need books and supplies for the course and has asked Second Chance Society for these, and SCS has agreed to supply them. rticle FAeature Reinventing Yourself Stepping Into Your Best By Don Boyer

Life is constantly changing however growth is optional. The fact is everything in this Universe is forever in a state of change and movement. The body you have today will be biologically different than the one you have tomorrow and is different from the one you had yesterday. Every relationship, business and economy is shifting, turning and moving at a rapid speed. These are facts however change and growth is not the same thing. In fact, they are as afar apart as the East is from the West yet people continually address and conduct their life as though they were the same thing. Change is a natural and physical state of evolution that God created that resides on this physical plane we call life here on earth. Growth on the other hand is taking those changes and using them to our advantage so that we can enjoy life to the fullest and become an asset to mankind while we are here on our earth journey. It is a sad but true fact that far too many people live one year 50 times over. Like nature our life is composed of Seasons and we are either entering into a new season, in the midst of an existing season or exiting of a season. Although each life season has its cycle and course to run, unlike nature we have the ability to change seasons at any point we choose. When you learn the positive effects and principles of “Reinventing Yourself” you take each season of your life and play it to the utmost satisfaction and effectiveness. You will produce a bountiful harvest through the whole season, and when that cycle is complete you will immediately jump

into a new season cycle and repeat the same success pattern. This is how life and success is designed to work, and with a little bit of insight and practice coupled with determination and commitment you can make your life a heaven on earth. The entertainment industry is one of the best examples of using the principle of “Reinventing”. Many actors and singers will a have long run being in the spot light of fame in one segment and like everything in the world of show business eventually ends. For those who do not “Reinvent” themselves they become obsolete and soon forgotten. Once their money runs out you sometimes find them in low budget shows and hitting the comic book circuit selling their photos and autographs of their glory days.

and franchises. Because of fierce competition and the ever expanding choice power that is given to the consumer major companies must continually be on the look out to come out with something new and fresh with a different twist and angle in order to stay in the game of profit. The Sustainability of Your Business Depends on Your Ability to “Reinvent Yourself”

The sustainability of any business depends on its ability to play out each cycle and successfully “Reinvent” itself the moment the current cycle ends. Smart and innovative companies have 5 to10 plans of reinventing themselves in advance so that there is no down time between cycles and seasons. Now don’t misunderstand me, there is real value and importance in repetition The smart ones and those who have however the effectiveness lays within hit shows right up until the time of their the cycle of a season. death in their eighties (and beyond) are those who have maximized the The process of “Reinventing Yourself” principle of “Reinventing Yourself”. does not mean a complete change The worst dilemma an actor can find of core material but a radical shift in themselves in is to be cast into a hit packaging, positioning and market role and then get stereotyped in that perception. is the process of “Stepping into Your Best”. Taking the old and making it new. A bold new look, taste, feel, image, paint job, an old message with a new voice. Taking this principle to the extreme however is when a1960’s pop star artist a few years back (when he was eighty, I think) tried to reinvent a come back as a hard rock star. That was not ridiculous that was down right scary (especially when he went on stage and forgot to put his teeth in!) Let me conclude this chapter by giving you five dynamic steps to start the process on how to “Reinvent Yourself” for profits and success. 1. Reevaluate Your Business. Take a very close look at your business and determine what cycle your business is in. Is your business thriving and booming both in growth and profits or is it stale and dying? If your business is at the height of success and profits growing exponentially you are not in need of a total make over at this point. However if you been running the same style for more than 5 years mandatory change is right around the corner if you want to keep your leading edge. 2. Working Hard. Working hard on things that don’t work, don’t make them work! Working hard on things that don’t work is the biggest culprit to business failure. If something is not working doing more of it does not reverse it. If your car is going in reverse pushing harder on the gas pedal won’t make it go forward. You must acknowledge that you are in need of a major change and drastic shift in essence you need to radically “Reinvent Yourself”. For many this is emotionally devastating because

we have put so much time, work and money into our current image and business model. The only thing that overrides that pain is the pain of business failure and the demise of your profits.

your year, your season, it is your time to hit the Klondike Gold. Others have done it; thousands are doing it right now, why not you?

3. Get Excited About Change. Think of “Reinventing Yourself” like you are getting all dressed up for a screaming audience just waiting for your appearance and when you go on stage you put on the performance of your life and they audience gives you a standing ovation throwing tens of thousands of dollars on stage for you because they were so pleased. Now before you think this is just an imaginary fairy tale, in essence that is exactly what happens when you “Reinvent Yourself” in the world of business. 4. Get A Mentor. I am referring to hiring a professional Mentor who specializes in the arena of personal and business “Reinventing”. If you cannot find one (because they are rare) contact me at don@donboyer. org and I will be happy to help you locate one. The worst thing you can do is get someone who is willing to Mentor you for free. The rule “You Get What You Pay For” applies ten fold when it comes to Mentorship. 5. Be Bold. When it comes to “Reinventing Yourself” you cannot crawl out of the mud you must “Explode” out of the mud. Dare to make a come back that will blow the shorts of King Kong. Make it so drastic, dynamic that it will suck the money right out of the marketplace and make all your current critics jaws drop down to their knee caps. This is

Article EMERGENCY! What You Must Know to Protect Your Property! By Marc Ben-Ezra, Partner, Florida Professional Law Group, PLLC as part of your insurance policy. Agents have often told a policy holder that something is not covered when FLPLG has gone on to represent them in the claims litigation process to recover substantial sums of money.

Most property owners believe that their insurance company will protect them through any unforeseen emergencies, but those in the midst of a crisis often report that things can get pretty chaotic and disturbing when dealing with their insurance companies for a property emergency, accident, or storm claim. Expert Marc Ben-Ezra, Partner and Insurance Claims Attorney for Florida Professional Law Group, PLLC shares tips on what policy holders need to know to protect their property. Insurance companies advertise on television, radio, newspapers, magazines and on the internet with slogans that say, “You’re a good neighbor,” and that “They are on your side.” Make no mistake these companies are in business to make money by collecting premiums and reducing claim payments. Their goal is to increase their profitability by paying a minimum percentage of the claims that they receive. Public Adjusters and lawyers are hired to represent you, the policyholder in the claims process. Your agent can’t do this for you. Beyond the main coverages listed on the front of the policy, most agents don’t understand the fine print of what is or isn’t covered

Attorneys usually work hand-in-hand with public adjusters, each serving the property owner in a different capacity. A public adjuster often does a great job getting an insurance company to pay your claim. Unfortunately, insurance companies often try to pay as little as possible and sometimes claims are delayed, denied or underpaid. Insurance Companies are big, powerful corporations, where there is a large imbalance of power between you and the insurance company. When insurance companies stop being a neighbor, stop being a friend, and

What can you expect when you hire an attorney for your insurance claim? Your attorney will work together as a team with your public adjuster and they will decide the best approach. You have now strengthened your bargaining position. By hiring an attorney you have added another level of protection for yourself and in addition, you have increased the risk for your insurance company. The attorney will probably need to sue your insurance company, get their attention and let them know

that you have a team fighting on your side that will shift that balance of power. They don’t like the possibility of having to face a jury and they calculate the cost of defending your case. They now know that they will be on the hook for the insurance claim as well as your attorney’s fees. Your attorney will fight on your behalf so that the insurance company may come to believe that it’s better off settling with you rather than continuing to fight. The legal process may take time with the insurance company wanting to drag out the process while your attorney will want to get it done as quickly as possible. Expect the insurance company to take your deposition and the deposition of other people who may have knowledge of your claim.

The success of a case is determined by many factors such as: the quality of your case; the language of the insurance policy, the law that affects your specific situation, how well your public insurance adjuster has prepared the claim, how well your attorney has pursued the claim, and if the insurance company finds that your particular case is one that it wants to fight to make an example out of for the public. Your case will either be settled with the insurance company directly, the case will be sent to an independent mediator to work with the parties, or the case may ultimately make it to a trial, which is the most unlikely outcome. At a trial one party will win and one will lose, but it is possible that the loser may appeal. How can I best be prepared? It’s important to review your insurance policies and to have an action plan in place in case an emergency happens. Should a disaster strike, after everyone in the property is safe and secure, consider contacting your Public Adjuster and / or a claims attorney to help get the claims process started correctly. This will help to ensure a settlement in a timely manner for the full indemnification afforded under your policy of insurance.

Expect the insurance company to take your deposition and the deposition of other people who may have knowledge of your claim. Expect that the insurer will want to inspect your property again. Marc Ben Ezra has practiced law in Florida for 23 years. With a focus on real estate law, Marc built one of the largest practices of its kind in the U. S. representing corporations such as Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo. When a few public adjusters approached Marc frustrated with the services that their clients were receiving from some other law firms, Marc saw an opportunity to use the experience and sophistication required to represent national corporations to help people who were having issues with their insurance companies. Understanding how large companies operate Marc’s firm now helps public adjusters, homeowners and business owners take on their insurance companies so that their claims are paid properly and fairly. A rticle Feature Wakefield Love By Shannon Siegel

Imagine pulling off of a state road at a beige sign reading “Wakefield” in cursive letters. Two donkeys start hollering as if they have just heard the latest town gossip. Barking erupts from behind a mesh screen, and travels closer to the wooden fence just behind the stone well. “Don’t you ever sit on that. It’s a real well, the lid is broken; if you fall, you will die,” my mother said to me as soon as I arrived. She pushes her pink rhinestone reading glasses on top of her flowing silver hair and kissed my cheek, then starts strategizing my entrance to her “farm.” Three dogs blow around the corner making it possible to match each unique bark to their body. Suddenly, all nine are there, waiting, not patiently, but nonetheless waiting

around her.

Sometimes, I think that my mother does wonder how exactly she ended up with so many animals, but I know it is because of her heart for animals and humans alike. When I was growing up, my family always had at least one dog, at one point we got a second and I recall my mom thinking two was enough.

A few years ago my sister had been to a horse auction in hopes of saving some of the horses from going to a much worse place. She was there with her best friend when they saw Eeyore, a miniature donkey with patches of missing hair and skin problems galore. They could not leave that auction without saving that sad, adorable animal. They paid about eighty dollars for him and took him back to the farm that they lived on at the time. They nurtured Eeyore back to health and loved him very much, but when it came time to move, they were not sure where to house him.

I joke with my mother about the two donkeys, Eeyore and Noah, about how they will respond when they are called, and the way they snarl their top lips up and out in order to munch down the grass from your hand. Those donkeys are more than just two adorable and hilarious animals though. They are a perfect example of my mother’s unusual and infinite compassion for the world

A little crazy would be one way to describe my mother and her lifestyle, but I believe in that kind of crazy comes a whole lot of love. My mother pours love into every single thing she does, more love and care than most people put into the simple things. She takes in animals and makes them a part of her family, she takes in humans and makes them part of her family. She does this because she wants to spread all of the happiness in the world. So let her be crazy, let her be wild, let her sing to her donkeys and sleep with nine dogs. While she does all those things, she radiates happiness through all of them.

wanted Eeyore back where my sister had found him, so my mom and stepdad first built him a pen in their back yard, then moved him to the front, where they sacrificed their front lawn and made it Eeyore’s home. My mother loved that donkey and spent time petting him, feeding him and talking to him every day. They had built a very strong bond, but despite their bond, Eeyore wanted more. When he started escaping his pen in the front yard, there was a bit of panic. A mini donkey on the loose

was not a typical emergency. Every time we found Eeyore, he was with the neighbor’s cows. Surprisingly they all got along very well and Eeyore seemed to enjoy the company of the cows, but it was not his home. My mom and step dad reinforced his pen multiple times, until they realized that if he wanted to escape, he would find a way. They brought another donkey (full-sized this time) into their lawnturned-donkey pen and let Eeyore and Noah get to know one another. It turned out that they got along

Anchors Away Foundation Providing sailing programs for physically and intellectually disabled children

Renew and Repair Program The Aventura Marketing Council’s Anchors Away Foundation has donated special access boats and equipment for ten years so physically and intellectually disabled children are able to know freedom on the water that they may not have on land. Each year 2,500 sailings take place on our South Florida waterways, but ten years of use have taken a toll on our sailboats and equipment. It’s time to “Renew and Repair” so the children can continue to learn about science, math and life skills while learning how to sail their own little boats on the water.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please help us repair one or more boats for a tax-deductible donation of $250 per boat. We have a fleet of 37 boats currently sailing out of Oleta River State Park, Miami Yacht Club, Coconut Grove Sailing Club and soon, Biscayne National Park. We are proud to say that 98% of every dollar donated is spent on the boats and specialized equipment. Please mail your check to the address below or call 305.932.5334…...Thank You!

Feature Vigneto’s the Modern Italian Family Restaurant Hotspots- Highlighting Kandee G’s favorite places in South Florida Interview by Juan Rutz

Tradition is one of most important things in the world. Especially when it comes to family and food. Our brains have been implanted with all sorts of memories featuring food and family traditions. In these modern times many of our traditions have been discarded for instant gratification and you find yourself in a drive thru waiting to be served. Yet none of those quick fixes come close to impacting us like a home cooked meal. That’s the aura I left with after visiting Vigneto’s in Plantation and interviewing their sweet, charismatic owner Angelo DiPiazza. Angelo has the perfect look for the part, a true import from the golden age of New York City and he carries with him all the rich history that comes with it. He embraced our interview like catching up with an old friend and in some ways that’s exactly what it was. I want this article to feature his voice as much as mine, so we will be intercutting if you will (that’s a filmmaker’s term for jumping from one scene to the next) from my

JR: How did you come up with the name?

JR: My family and I use to go there when I was a child.

AD: Actually, we had a friend Dom Deluise, he was a friend of ours and I remember calling him up when we first opened the restaurant and we asked him for a name and he came up Vignetos and that’s what we went with you know.

We spoke about the old neighborhood and how everything has changed in the area but his restaurant “Di Piazza Italian Restaurant” is still there forty years later. Many restaurants might have décor and menus that make it seem that they care about traditions and values but Vigneto’s actually has those values and traditions. AD: Oh yeah usually it’s either me or Frank or Joe walking around you know and we talk to people and you know and introduce ourselves. We are here seven (7) days a week it’s a lifestyle, a restaurant to us is a lifestyle, we live the restaurant you know, we’re all brought up in restaurants you know so that’s all we know, we don’t know nothing else, we know restaurants. For a restaurant that is known for their Italian home cooked meals, Vigneto’s has a wide variety to choose from. Whether it’s fresh seafood, prime cut steaks or meals for children they have it covered. Here are some of my favorite quotes from Angelo Dipiazza himself regarding their menu and standards. AD: Well people come here for our food, our flavors, our freshness and we have a different home style cooking that you know a lot of the chain restaurants can’t duplicate. You know these are like old family recipes, that unless you are Italian or unless you were brought up Italian you wouldn’t know about. We cater to people that are knowledgeable about our food and they know the difference

in food so when they come here and they eat, they usually have a memory behind it. Either they come from a neighborhood in an Italian section and they instantly say wow I remember growing up and you know the woman across the street she cooked like this and you know we grew up in an Italian neighborhood, and so a lot of familiar things come back to them. AD: We get fresh fish every day you know, coming right from the boat sometimes. I order fish every day, our meats are cut fresh you know, everything we make daily, there is nothing pre prepared, all our prep work is done the same day, fresh ingredients, our vegetables are fresh, basically you know that’s what we do. AD: We have a children’s menu, usually they can tell us what they want or spaghetti, raviolis you know, meatballs and pizza so we have a great menu for children. AD: When the lobster season opens up, the Florida lobster season, I get fresh lobsters. We also do stone crab in stone crab season, we do it as a special. Our fish is mostly local fish, we do a Chilean sea bass also that gets flown in fresh you know which is really good but mostly it’s our local

fish, you know the snapper, the yellow tail, hog snapper, swordfish, grouper you know, local Florida fish. Since Vigneto’s in Plantation is located near many businesses with hard working people in need of lunch during the working week, I asked Mr.Piazza, what is the number one ordered meal for lunch? He told me “The homemade lasagna, we have an eggplant parmesan that’s excellent, everybody loves it. We have baked Ziti’s, we have a pasta with broccoli, and we have so many different things in our menu. It’s not a huge menu but it has variety and like I said before if people want to request something we’ll make it for them.” The fact that you can order off the menu is one of the reasons I love Vigneto’s. Not many restaurants have the setup and confidence to deliver on that sort of feature but again that points back to Vigneto’s dedication to old school traditions, the freedom of choice and conversation is available at Vigneto’s. I also asked Mr. Piazza what are customer’s top three favorite plates, here’s an excerpt from that conversation. AD: Our top three (3) I would say number one would be the fish,

Summer 2014 - Kandee G Enterprises

number two would be our steak and veal chops and third would be a lot of our pasta dishes, which we have. JR: Is there a specific plate when it comes to the fish? AD: Yeah we have a special sauce that we make its called a livornese sauce and it’s got black olives, capers, pepperoncini and it’s in a light tomato sauce and it’s a little bit on the spicy side but everyone loves it you know, they all want a jar of it to go home and you can put this sauce on anything you know, but especially the fish, it brings out a lot of the flavor. JR: And the steaks, is there a specific plate in steaks and veal section? AD: We have a New York prime it’s a sixteen (16) ounce New York prime and it’s excellent, it just melts in your mouth like butter. People say I am not going to a steak house anymore I am going to come here for a steak you know because it’s that good. JR: Wow, that sounds delicious and for the pasta? AD: We have so many different pasta dishes but mostly our marinara sauce is over the top its really, really good,

Feature we use the best California tomatoes and it’s just a light beautiful sauce. It doesn’t over power anything, it’s just really good. We make it fresh every day and people really love it. At this portion of the conversation, I was left salivating thinking about all the tasty options so of course I had to ask about dessert. JR: How about desserts? AD: Oh desserts my sister is the one that makes the desserts, she makes a famous tiramisu which is over the top, and I mean people go crazy for it. JR: I can’t even say that, how do you say that? AD: Tiramisu is a dessert made with lady finger cookies and its mascarpone cheese and the cookies are dipped in espresso coffee and then the mascarpone, and we just do layer on top of layer its really, really good. The dessert has been around a lot but my sister does it like she makes it at home and brings it here, she also makes the ricotta cheesecake which is an Italian cheesecake you know.

JR: What’s the difference in Italian cheesecake? AD: Instead of cream cheese we use ricotta cheese and she does a really good job on that you know and she also makes a chocolate and vanilla cheesecake. JR: Cannolis?

AD: That’s a staple you know, our cannolis are great! As you may know this great publication is headed by the inspiring public speaker and excellent company concierge Kandee G, so of course my journalistic impulses led me to ask, what does Kandee G order in one of her favorite restaurants. JR: So what is Kandee G’s favorite plate when she comes in here? AD: Kandee G likes a lot of grilled vegetables, she’ll eat the fish, she likes her fish in the livornese sauce, and she drinks Ferrari wine. JR: Ferrari, what’s that? AD: Ferrari Carano, she loves that JR: What? Ferrari Carano, I’ve never heard of it. AD: It’s a California wine you know and she knows about wines, so we have a lot of choices for her you know and she takes home a lot of food. I know Kandee G since since day one, she came and introduced herself and we became friends automatically, she’s like a sister to me you know. She’s a great woman, she’s in here three (3) times a week, she’s like part of the family. One of Vigneto’s most eye catching visuals is their wall of wine, your eyes can’t ignore it, you just want to walk on over and take a look at their impressive collection. I came to find out that their collection was not solely created internally but was shaped by their customers. AD: We have a bigger wine list now, you know people tell us the kinds of wines that they want and we usually try to get them. JR: So you are very customer friendly when it comes to wine

AD: Yes, we’ve improved our wine list a lot you know because we take recommendations. If people say, oh I like that wine from Chile or California or Italy, we usually try to get it for them JR: That’s fantastic, so you cater around your clients, you are actually gearing around the community that comes in and try to cater to them, how many wines do you have in your list? AD: We have seventy five (75) to eighty (80) bottles of different wines. Vigneto’s is an institution, a rare beauty mark of a restaurant amid copycat restaurant formulas and chains. There is a freedom available to you the customer, in every important area of the restaurant experience. You can have a real discussion about the food your about to eat or ask for something off the menu and be surprised. Their manners are steeped in old school traditions and values so you feel at home the minute you walk in and are quickly greeted with sincere care. I don’t know how many times I’ve been to a restaurant and asked a question about my selection only to be given vague text book answers, the art of conversation is alive at Vigneto’s. You get a grand pleasant experience at Vigneto’s due to the fact that its foundation comes from a man whose dream was to open a restaurant. Every day at Vigeneto’s is a dream lived. It is not run by a man that simply has to pay the bills and increase profits. It is run by Angelo Dipiazza, a man who believes that restaurants is a lifestyle and together with his team, they have mastered presenting this lifestyle. AD: Service is really number one to us. We want to give the best service possible. People leave here and they really enjoy the service. At lunch time they’re in a hurry and we give it to them as quick as we can. Dinner time is a little laid back, our service is great, we have plenty of bus boys

reasons about this new available time to enjoy their delicious entrees. God bless and I hope to see you at Vigneto’s. Ray Ray: from Founder to Flying! had been foundering and unable to walk. Tony would try to clean his feet while the horse was down, which was most of the time. He tried his best, but his farrier was very limited in knowledge, and didn’t know how to help him.

A foundered Thoroughbred gets a second chance, and his owner learns it is never too late to turn a life around.

I went to look at Ray that evening with my friend Gail. Tony lives in my neighborhood. We both wanted to cry when we saw him. Unable to walk, his duck-like front feet way out in front of him. Shaking and trembling in pain, he was trying to walk on his hind legs. He had been abscessing those 6 months, and his dorsal wall was blown out everywhere. When he would walk through a puddle, the water would squirt out the holes at the top of the coronet band. Tony was up all hours of the night tending to him and bringing him food and water. Ray had lost all of his muscle tone, and had lost a lot of weight from stress and pain. He was so thin, I could feel his ribs and backbone.

T

his is a story of a young 4 year old Thoroughbred racehorse named Ray Ray. His owner, Tony, was a real animal lover and rescued dogs. He wanted to rescue Ray Ray, so I offered to pick him up in my trailer last summer. He was 3 years old then, just off the track and was being housed on a dirt lot. When I saw his feet, I told Tony he would need expert hoof care, as he had cracks all the way up the hoof wall, and flares, and we were in our rainy season. I knew they would deteriorate quickly without good hoof care and disease control.

It was getting dark when we left—otherwise, I would have gone back for my tools, but there were no lights there. So I told Tony I would be back the next day. I would do everything I could to save Ray, and I gave him a good chance for recovery. Gail and I could hardly sleep that night, the image of this baby suffering on those feet haunted us all night long. I couldn’t wait to get back there and help this poor boy.

I didn’t hear from Tony until April of this year. Heartsick, he told me he was going to have to euthanize Ray Ray. His farrier didn’t know what to do with his feet, and for at least 6 months he

I brought my battery-operated grinder, portable rubber mats and a wooden board to put his foot on. He couldn’t lift his hoof, and I had to do the whole trim from the top. I carefully measured the hoof, checked the lateral measurements, heel, and coronet angle with my 30 degree gauge. Then I marked off the excess toe I wanted to remove. I first used my nippers to take away all the excess toe. I thought Tony would faint. He saw my outline of what had to come off, and in a panicky voice said “You aren’t going to take all that off?!!! My blacksmith took only one swipe and his hooves bled horribly!” I know Tony fairly well, so I told him, in my funniest voice, to shut up and watch a master at work. I thought that might calm him down, as he was more nervous than Ray. Once the long leverage of the toe was backed up and some of the flares addressed, I could get him to lift his hoof for a couple of seconds. That gave me enough time to take a swipe with the grinder on the bottom of the hoof to even out the heels a bit. I then took the grinder, and backed up the toe further with the grinder, and went all around the hoof, following the contour of the coronet band as per the Welz trim.

The soles of both front hooves were a mess, all blown out from abscesses and disease. I was able to bring the bars down lightly with the grinder, but would have to wait for consecutive trims to detail them more, once Ray was comfortable and could hold his foot up a bit longer. Tony was given instructions of how to care for his feet with frequent White Lightning treatments and keeping the hooves dry and protected in the Soft Ride boots. It was a sweaty, physically exhausting, long trim in a tough environment. I think I was there about 3 1/2 hours. And I never drew even ONE drop of blood in thewww.kandeeg.com entire trim. Ray has continued to progress rapidly, and in 4 months is flying on his bare feet, bucking and galloping around the pastures like the racehorse he is. He has put on a lot of muscle and weight, and his coat shines like a mirror. In fact, someone riding by wanted to buy him from Tony— but he will never part with this special horse, who has become part of his soul. The love and special care that Tony lavished on Ray was imperative to Ray making a full recovery.

Ray flying around, enjoying life, 4 months after trimming began with Marianne.

Helping horses to be able to fly on their feet again, healing their feet and taking away the pain. Seeing the sparkle come back into their eyes, that had been glazed from pain and suffering. This is what I love to do and live to do. This is what keeps me going, and makes my heart soar when they heal, and I see them run again. This is why we break our backs and hobble home late at night, exhausted. Money cannot buy the feeling of happiness and accomplishment that we have when we save even one life, such as Ray’s. Bless all of you that work with horses and put their welfare first. There’s More! Please see the following pages for many more photos from Ray’s trims, and detailed trimming notes from Marianne.

Ray’s Story

O

by his owner, Tony Vincent

n September 5th, 2012, I met for the first time the racehorse I committed to rescuing, Ray Ray. He had just turned 3 years old in February 2012, and he had already been raced into the ground. He was housed in a small muddy paddock, and I was determined I was going to give him a better life. Being a rescuer of all kinds of other animals, of course I thought I knew what I was getting into. I was wrong. I called on my longtime friend Marianne Allen to help me transport this big horse. With her patience and knowledge, she convinced this large horse to get into her large horse trailer for the transport to my property. The first thing Marianne noticed was the deplorable condition of this gelding’s hooves. Marianne advised me that this horse was going to need specialized hoof care, and of course she offered her expertise. Had I not been too proud to accept her offer immediately, I would not have been responsible for the suffering this poor horse went through in the months that followed. Thinking that I could “cure” this animal myself was woefully shortsighted; not that I did not try. I soaked his hooves in Epsom salts, applied poultice pads, and made him wear boots as directed by the veterinarian. I gave White Lightning treatments as much as possible, but he was still on a downward spiral. He started losing weight and losing his appetite. He did not want to walk much at all, and he spent too much time lying down for a horse of his size. I started waking up at 4 am, so that I could work on his hooves while he was laying down, and get him into fresh poultice pads and his boots for the day. I thought I had done everything I could, without results, and scheduled him for euthanasia in April of 2013. I am not one who likes to fail, so in the hour before his scheduled euthanasia, I decided to call Marianne Allen to see if my decision to put the horse down was the only option left. Marianne immediately came to my ranch and examined Ray, and she said she could make him better. Marianne explained the lengthiness of the process and everything it entailed. Above: Ray after his first trim with Marianne in April Ray was in such a terrible condition 2013. Below: Ray 4 months later, and looking like (pretty much unable to walk and in a brand new horse!! constant pain), that I was skeptical about Marianne’s upbeat and rosy prognosis.

Photos courtesy Tony Vincent

as I could, I gave Ray a White Lightning treatment on both front hooves. Afterwards, I dried his feet, powdered them with corn starch baby powder, and put him in Soft Rides. For the first time in 6 months, he walked almost like a normal horse, lifting his front legs instead of walking with all his weight on his hind legs under him and front feet stretched out. As we let him walk out to the grass in front of the house, Tony followed him out, incredulous. He was so upset with himself that all that time the horse was suffering, he never thought to call me, and put that horse through all that needless suffering. He looked at Ray walking like a normal horse and enjoying grazing, and for Tony it was like he was witnessing a miracle. Tony was smiling and crying all at the same time.

During the first appointment, Marianne worked for hours, measuring, marking, grinding, rasping, cutting, and then fitting him for “horse orthopedic style boots.” A horse that hadn’t walked or even placed weight on his front hooves in weeks took his first steps. I was amazed and ashamed all at the same time. The guilt I experienced for allowing this magnificent animal to suffer needlessly, when help was literally right around the corner, was overwhelming. Marianne Allen is now a fixture at the barn where I keep my horses. She performs natural hoof care on both of them, and I will never have it any other way.

Ray-Before and After 1st Trim

All photos courtesy Marianne Allen

Ray-Before 1st Trim

Before Ray’s first trim: right front has a lateral flare that has caused the capsule to twist to the outside.

The right hoof has the worst rotation. You can see the angle at the coronet is quite steep, and the long toe is leveraged away from the coffin bone. The entire medial wall is blown out by abscessing. It is hollow all the way up to the coronet band. When he walked through a puddle, water would squirt through the openings all the way up!

The left front has abscessing mostly on the lateral wall. The toe is incredibly long.

You can see the left hoof has abscessing holes all the way up to the coronet band on the lateral wall. Also, the heel is very under run from the leverage of the long toe. page

14

Fall 2013-Issue 52

Top view before trim, showing how long the toe has grown. You can count the rings from laminitis and stress on the dorsal wall.

It is so kind to the horse to use a grinder instead of a rasp in these types of critical cases. The hoof capsule is attached very loosely to the coffin bone (like a loose tooth). The laminae are like cobwebs holding the coffin bone in place. Any pressure from rasping can wiggle the capsule and cause great pain to the horse, even jeopardizing the remaining attachment to the coffin bone. I followed the contour of the coronet band as taught by the Welz trim, and this helps establish the correct perimeter of the hoof and gets rid of flares.

Left front (medial): I backed the dorsal wall and went all around the hoof. On these capsules with long walls, they will leverage up into the coronet band, putting pressure and sometimes pushing the coronet band above P2 and sometimes onto P1. You can see redness around the coronet band from the pressure that was there. This will now be relieved, and the coronet can relax and heal. Right front (medial): You can see blood bruising inside the hoof wall, but look at the black hollow areas all around the cracks up the wall. This will require lots of White Lightning treatments to kill the disease and allow good tissue to grow down inside the hoof capsule.

Left front: The coronet angle is almost 30 degrees on the first trim. The backing of the toe has taken off the leverage of the heels, and they are actually standing up better after the trim. Again, I only felt comfortable in opening up the bottom of the disease track, so that the White Lightning treatments could get into the hoof.

Left front, showing abscess hole.

Summer 2014 - Kandee G Enterprises

Right front: The coronet band has an almost 30 degree angle, with good heel and toe height. The toe has been backed vertically, so as not to lose any vertical toe height, but especially to take the pressure off the coronet band from the long dorsal wall, and to relieve the abscess pressure. The perimeter of the hoof has also been trimmed with the grinder to take off most of the flares, and to allow the coronet band to relax from excess wall pressure in the heels and quarters. This is following the Welz trim protocols, and shows you how you can get spectacular results and healing in a very short time.

Ray-After 1st Trim

Right front: This is as short as I dared take the toe on the first trim. I opened up the disease on the bottom of the hoof only. I did use the grinder and smooth some of the scarred dorsal wall where the abscesses blew through. Some schools think you should open up disease tracks all the way up to the coronet band. I think this would have left the hoof with very little integrity to hold the remaining laminae in place, and could have caused the hoof to collapse. I made the right choice, because the hoof healed from the inside out, and from the top down.

Ray-3 Months Later

He is sweating and waiting at the gate to come in and get his trim! Such a handsome boy, he has put on weight and muscle now that he is no longer in pain and can run again.

The old sole peeled off rather easily, and in the pic you can see the pristine new sole and the uncalloused live frog. There is still some necrotic areas that are growing out, but after only 3 months, the hooves are recovering quickly—especially in this case of such severe damage. Ray steadily improved, without a backward step in 3 months.

The left front still has the old sole attached, and I only remove what is loose and wants to come off. The necrotic areas are healing and will take time to grow out. After treating his front hooves in White Lightning, I dried them and put on Soft Rides. I keep a pair handy for just such emergencies.

Right front before trim. Ray went 3 weeks past his trim date, and started to break off excess toe. This was the most compromised hoof, with abscessing through the whole front of the hoof—water would shoot up through the coronet band when he walked in a puddle. It is now closing and healing. It will take about 6 to 8 months to grow a new hoof capsule, and for all the damage to grow out. But already, you can see how the hooves have a healthy pink glow to them, with good blood flow, especially around the coronet band.

Ray is walking with a purpose, going for the grass. You can see how skinny he is and how little muscle he has left. The bottom of Ray’s soles were so compromised, full of disease and holes and dead abscessed tissues. He was given White Lightning treatments twice a week for almost 3 months to clean the disease out of the hooves. I left the sole intact, so it would act as a band-aid till the live sole re-grew. This was a good decision; as you see, 3 months later there is a beautiful, new live sole under all that old sole. Had I tried to remove it before the live sole had a chance to repair itself and grow, he would have been so sore walking on corium that was raw and exposed. By keeping him comfortable, he was able to move and get the blood flow to the hooves, to keep the healing process accelerated.

I took a candid shot of Tony with Ray. Tony was filled with so many emotions. He was going to euthanize him that day. The months for him and Ray were over! 72of suffering www.kandeeg.com Summer

2014 - Kandee G Enterprises

Right front. You can see how the coronet band is even all around the hoof now. There are no dips or waves in the coronet band, which means there is no excess dorsal wall pressure, and the hoof is perfectly balanced medial/lateral. This is what can be achieved with the Welz method of backing the toe. Very rapid healing ensues.

After trim, the front feet are perfectly round and the excess toe has been brought back vertically with the Welz method of backing the toe. This keeps the hoof from losing vertical toe height and helps build concavity and sole depth. It is amazing to see the amount of healing that has taken place in just 3 months.

Right front medial view shows how much the hoof has repaired the abscess damage. By backing the toe as per the Welz trim, you relieve the dorsal wall pressure into the coronet band. This allowed rapid healing of the coronet band and the closing of the abscess crack that went all the way up from the bottom of the hoof.

Feature Gypsy Magic I have always had a love, passion. and fascination for horses. I have been around them for most of my life. Several years ago, I discovered the magical breedthe Gypsy Vanner. The Gypsy Vanner Horse is a beautiful and rare breed of horse bred by the Gypsies in northern England and Ireland. The breed known today as Gypsy Vanner evolved from secretive and selective matings over a century. These magnificent animals have now found their way across the Atlantic Ocean and made their way into the hearts and onto the farms of the American Horseman. I have found the Gypsy Vanner to be very gentle and to bond quickly to those who care for them. Gypsy Vanners are easy to love. They are hardworking and very willing. Feature Kandee G and Her Big Sexy Guy and Her New Big Sexy Venture Twenty-two years ago, my life circumstances took a dramatic downturn. Everything I had worked so hard for – retirement account, savings account, investment accounts, and my home – was abruptly gone. I was alone, taking care of my four-monthold baby, with no family to turn to. I was horrified to get to the point where only one jar of peanut butter was left in my refrigerator. At that moment, I made the decision that I was not going to be a victim to life’s circumstances; I would be a victor. From struggling on my own with a four-month-old child to care for, no job and no money, I have built two very successful businesses. I have been recognized as being among the top in both industries. I have been interviewed by major publications, television and radio for my success. Most places I travel by private jet, hence my story has been called “from peanut butter to private jets.” I am living proof that life’s circumstances represent the intersection of mediocrity and personal prosperity. My success and subsequently, my current work, were born out of my search for my own path to personal and professional empowerment. I came to understand there are certain timeless, universal principles which underlie those things that we create. Reality is bound by these just as surely as the principles of math, chemistry and physics. I came to understand that thoughts are things. You can reengineer your thoughts so that you can redesign your life, consciously and deliberately. Your thoughts as well as your feelings power your vision. My mission is to help others create their vision. I feel that the true path to

having the life you want begins with having a strong, clear, vision. I have brought my expertise to thousands through my speaking, coaching, training, radio show, magazine, my online presence, and my Vision Program. With the understanding and the tools, people all over the world are enhancing and living the lives they dream. I am the author of Now Boarding: Next Stop-Your Remarkable Life. This book is a self-help memoir, detailing my story and the tools that I used to tap into the extraordinary power of thought, feeling and vision. I continue to vision and create. I have a real passion for horses, natural horsemanship and equine-assisted work. Natural horsemanship teaches you how to work with and train your horse utilizing the philosophy of working with them based on the horse’s natural instincts and methods of communication. Equine assisted work uses the horses and their natural behaviors to teach people in a way that they cannot learn in any other form training. I am currently building
