Academic Passion

Surround yourself with life changers. Nazareth has always drawn people who want to make a difference — both students and professors. What they have in common is zeal for their pursuits, both in and out of the classroom. Teachers. Artists. Healers. Researchers. You’ll be surrounded by a diverse community of learners and doers.

Why I Teach William Hallahan, Ph.D., Biology “When I was a child, I played outside every day….Teaching is an opportunity for me to bring others into the out-of-doors to explore new environments and see first hand how animals and plants survive together. At Nazareth, I take students on field trips to local ecosystems. The most memorable expedition was a summer project in which two students and I surveyed the loon populations in the Adirondacks, carrying canoes into lakes where few people visited. More recently, I have taken students to the tropical environments of Costa Rica and Belize, to Peru, and the Amazon jungle. When students discover and learn for themselves — that is the goal of teaching.” Betsy King, Ph.D., LCAT, MT-BC, Music Therapy “As a music therapist, I know that every day holds the potential for discovery. If I change the melody line for a phrase, my client — recovering from a stroke — will be able to say all the words he wants to, instead of always dropping one. If I pause, ever so slightly, in the midst of the piano improvisation, the little boy with autism will keep his focus on our interaction and communication. If I change the harmony in the song we are writing, the group of young women with eating disorders will offer more emotional and personal lyrics. I teach because I am compelled to share what I have discovered.”

Timothy Thibodeau, Ph.D., History “Historians have the awesome task of combining a sense of wonder with rigorous research and teaching that interprets for the current generation the valuable lessons from lost cultures. Most of the students I teach are non-majors, but I thrive on the challenge of presenting what I study in a creative and timely manner, making it applicable to our own world and lived experiences.” Ellen Contopidis, Ph.D., Inclusive Childhood Education “When my high school guidance counselor asked what I wanted to do, I responded, ‘Teach physical education to handicapped children.’ Her response was ‘There is no such thing.’ I politely replied, ‘There will be.’ Five years later, my first official teaching position was in a residential school for children with developmental disabilities as a physical education teacher. Now, as a teacher educator, I want my learners to know that it is not just about the content, or the standards, or the test scores. Joy comes from identifying strengths and capitalizing on them, from appreciating and instilling an appreciation for difference, and from seeing the potential of their learners reached. Teaching, for me, has always been about sharing the joy: supporting and encouraging others to find joy and success is why I teach.”

An Uncommon Core

Freely explore with an Uncommon Core. What is the relationship between power and change? What does it mean to be virtuous? How should we use our knowledge of nutrients to achieve optimal health? Sometimes it’s not about answers, but about learning what questions you need to ask. Our core curriculum is designed to challenge your mind. Make you a critical thinker. Foster deep curiosity. Inspire collaboration. It’s no coincidence that those are the same traits the world is hungry for in the next generation of professionals. This is not a choppy

Enduring Questions You’ll learn how to ask good questions and how to explore them in different disciplines. You’ll start to think about what questions really interest you. Perhaps “What makes a meaningful life?” or “What role should morality play in business and politics?” or “How should humans treat the environment?” You’ll take the following courses: • Two college writing courses • Perspective-Enduring Question First Year Seminar • Academic and College Success • Five more Perspective-Enduring Questions courses (P-EQs)

collection of general education courses. It’s an electrifying selection of classes that supports each student’s chosen major — and helps undeclared students discover what they love. Unlike other schools, our core emphasizes real-life learning — opportunities outside the classroom to put your studies into practice. Through internships. Research. Leadership. Portfolio building. Our core promises you relevant tools, experience, guidance, and support to design your education. Your career. Your future.

Exploration

Integration

Application

In consultation with your professors and advisor, you’ll decide on a question you’d like to pursue in your Integrative Studies. You’ll also probably want to explore one or more Experiential Learning Pathways in this year. Here’s what you’ll take:

While taking your last Integrative Studies course, you’ll sign up for the Core Milestone Experience. Here you’ll look at all the artifacts and reflections you archived in your portfolio — from your P-EQ and IS courses and from your experiential learning. You’ll sign up for:

• Two more Perspectives-Enduring Questions courses

• Your third Integrative Studies course

This is when you apply the skills and knowledge you gained through the core in your major area of study. You may also want to sign up for another Experiential Learning Pathway to see how what you have learned in the classroom can be applied to real world problems and issues.

• Two Integrative Studies courses • One Experiential Learning Pathway • A Health & Wellness course

• The Core Milestone Experience • Maybe another Experiential Learning Pathway

Global Citizenship

Let the planet teach you. When you understand the significant diversity around the world, your brain and your heart work better together — for good. International experience helps you see the promise in humanity. Understand differences in politics, economics, and culture. Spend a week. A semester. A summer. You can even choose to intern abroad, and gain

international job experience that makes you more attractive to increasingly global workplaces. We offer overseas programs in more than 20 countries and more than 40 universities around the world. If there’s a country where you want to study that’s not yet on the list, we’ll help you make it happen.

Sample International Study Experience: Berlin, Germany Very few cities in the world have gone through a more radical change in the past 50 years than Berlin, Germany. In the center of Europe, Berlin offers easy access to all points in all directions, but it also offers students a truly powerful learning location as they experience both traditional European culture and the consequences of the Cold War.

ANIME, Valencia, Spain

Although the Berlin Wall went down in 1989, the generations of Germans who grew up and lived in the communist East side of the city are still trying to overcome a different way of life. For a student, the amalgamation of diverse historical, social, and personal experiences provides the perfect laboratory to understand differences in culture, economics, and politics.

So we have internships in every discipline. High-profile research projects. Active community involvement. Express your vision. Find your audience. The arts in all their forms illuminate so many aspects of life. Entertainment. Architecture. Politics. Commerce. They help us solve problems in new ways. Sometimes, they even help us to heal.

Art and Design Nazareth’s visual arts students join a thriving community of painters, illustrators, designers, ceramicists, printmakers, sculptors, and more. They dive deep into both practice and theory. They study with professors who are not just teachers but working artists. Two galleries on campus — the Arts Center Gallery and the Colacino Art Gallery — are host to regionally and nationally acclaimed artists. That includes faculty and students. Our arts students have plenty of studio time to perfect their craft, opportunities to be curators themselves, and personal connections to award-winning local professionals. Off campus, you’ll find dozens of galleries and thousands of working artists. Rochester is one of the most artistically rich cities of its size in the world, which means numerous opportunities to apply your creativity.

Spark some inspiration in the next generation. Our education program is built to help each student become exactly the teacher they’re meant to be and what students need.

Education The stats speak for themselves. In 2011 and 2012, Nazareth had a 93% employment rate for education degree earners. Education is among Nazareth’s most sought-after disciplines because we have an extraordinary record of introducing bright, creative educators to the profession. People who are transforming the way children learn. And transforming their lives.

Quad Certification Nazareth is one of only two schools in New York State offering an undergraduate inclusive education program for initial teacher certification in which candidates earn four certifications in four years:

Nazareth is one of only two schools in New York State to offer a multiple certification program that prepares students for teacher certification in four different areas of general and special education — all within four years. Academic Passion — Profile

“I spent 15 years as a practicing speechlanguage pathologist before I came to Nazareth, so I know what it takes to be successful in the field. I have the benefit of being able to bring a balance of both practical experience and theory into the classroom. Some people feel that when you’re in a professional program, you’re just learning to be a technician. But our students are getting so much more than professional training. They are learning to understand the rich theory, research, and knowledge base behind what we do with our clients. They begin to value diverse perspectives and approaches. Often they see that there is not simply one answer or a right answer.”

World-class training for helpers and healers. Professionals in health and human services are usually driven by a unique gift—a desire to serve humanity in a way that takes strength, tenderness, insight, and empathy.

Health and Human Services With a long history of educating health care professionals, Nazareth has earned its undisputed expertise in training leaders in the field. In all the allied health professions, and in complementary therapies as well. Allied health students get a foundation of hands-on experience in our on-campus wellness and rehabilitation clinics. Access to patients from the surrounding community. Side-by-side study with faculty and clinicians. Some programs feature intensive study of the human body through rare opportunities like cadaver dissection. Feed your curiosities. There’s a reason we call certain majors “the humanities.” Studying them at Nazareth is all about what it means to be human. To be a student of the world, for life. To learn how to adapt. To find fascination in everything going on around you.

Humanities and Social Sciences

Majors American Studies* Anthropology*

From anthropology to women and gender studies (almost A to Z), each humanities and social sciences major is enriched with intimate professional organizations that give you an outlet for your interests — and a place to call home with your closest colleagues. Our Center for International Education helps students study abroad, connects them to faculty and alumni who share their interests, and invites them to participate in global-minded projects. Our Mills

Writing Center offers students one-on-one coaching. The Forced Migration Studies Program connects students with refugees living in the Rochester area, providing first-hand experience with outreach. Nazareth also offers extensive internships in government, where students have access to high-level leaders, and close-up exposure to politics and societal challenges. Humanities and social sciences disciplines often intersect, too. Philosophy. Peace

and justice. Religious studies. We not only encourage students to pursue ambitious double majors here—we’re equipped to fully support your efforts with the perfect combinations of teachers, communities, experiential learning, and career directions. The flexibility you’ll find here makes it possible to create major and minor combinations that make your Nazareth degree even more valuable.

Find meaning in new languages and adventures. Seeing the world is one of the best forms of education. Learning a different language opens up your brain. It also can open doors when a language major or minor is part of your resume.

Languages and International Nazareth understands the power of travel and immersion in other cultures. So we offer some of the broadest language and international studies programs you’ll find anywhere. In fact, dozens of students and faculty here have been honored with scholarships from the Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international education exchange. Our students are selected to attend the Clinton Global Initiative University, the Clinton Foundation’s international student conference addressing pressing global challenges. We also recognize that no two students are alike. So we offer lots of ways to participate. Some students live with host families. Some choose a traditional exchange program. Some take a trip over spring or summer break. Whatever your route, breaking out of your old borders will broaden your perspective and lead to professional opportunities.

And at Nazareth, you’ll have a head start. Because students here travel abroad earlier than at other schools. When you’re here, you’re immersed in home-grown programs and international experiences right on campus. Our language houses offer dedicated “home” space where students can socialize and hear from speakers in the language they’re studying. And our Institute for Pluralism provides a space where students of diverse languages, backgrounds, and beliefs can congregate and learn from each other. At home or abroad, we’ve created opportunities for students to grow and connect through new languages. You’ll acquire skills and experience that will serve you well, no matter what your life’s work turns out to be.

Solve giant problems. Discover new marvels. At Nazareth, Peckham Hall gives new meaning to the words “lab work. Home to our Integrated Center for Math and Science, this state-of-the-art facility has 20 labs filled with next-generation equipment.

Sciences and Math Undergrads have research opportunities at Nazareth as early as freshman year, using our well-equipped facilities. The sizable biology lab is ideal for students in life science, pre-med, physical therapy, nursing, and other health-related majors. Workspaces enable interdisciplinary work, such as projects that combine chemistry and art. We approach math as an art and a science, emphasizing pattern discovery, problem solving, and the integration of diverse ideas. Our graduates go into finance, insurance, industrial, and government roles as well as teaching. Guiding you closely in all of our disciplines are professors, not teaching assistants. Thrive at a wildly theatrical campus—and city. We nurture performing artists and present their work in the region’s premier mid-sized theater.

Theatre and Performance If you’re an aspiring performer, our theater curriculum is just the beginning of your show-biz edge. Here you’re invited to audition for student theater productions far earlier than other schools. Plus you’ll have opportunities to bring your passion for theater to life in every way. We offer hands-on training in many aspects of production, such as set design, lighting, and costumes, to help you sharpen your working knowledge of theater. Recently, we renovated our expansive Callahan Theatre with Broadway-worthy technology — from a fly system to a

sprung floor — to transform it into one of the finest on-campus performing arts venues in the country. The TONY award-winning Garth Fagan has made a home for his dance company right here on campus. But even when the curtain is down on the stages on campus, there are opportunities to experience professional theater a few miles away in Rochester. The city has several theater companies and hosts traveling shows on a regular basis. So prepare for applause — to give and receive.

Explore, engage, and focus your future. Everyone doesn’t begin college with a career clearly in mind. One in five Nazareth students arrives on campus undeclared. And more than a quarter of students change their majors along the way.

Undeclared Major We welcome students who are still discovering their life’s work. In fact, we’ve designed our curriculum to give you the breathing room you need to explore different disciplines. The GEM program, short for Guided Exploration of Majors, ensures you have a home at Nazareth while you’re figuring out what you want to do. GEM is a sequence of services and experiences that helps you take stock of your interests, plan an individualized academic program, explore majors and careers, and connect with other

students who are in the process of deciding on a major. GEM helps you study yourself more closely. Understand your personality and your values. You have the support of an entire community of faculty and alumni in a variety of fields as you consider your professional direction.

about yourself. Teaching you skills that will serve you in any career and in life — such as speaking and writing, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving. And we let you choose from a broader range of core programs, so you can choose one that speaks to you.

You’ll also take comfort in the approach of our Uncommon Core. It’s the opposite of the prescribed course list you’ll find at many schools. Our core curriculum is about opening your eyes to new possibilities. Encouraging you to first learn some more

The courses you choose, the guidance you get, the internships you land, and the alumni connections you make — it’ll all lead you comfortably to your life’s work.

Uncommon core Student Perspective Scott Dawson, a Nazareth hockey player from Ottawa, didn’t declare a major initially. As a sophomore, he became a double major in business and economics. “I think Nazareth is a great place for students who are not quite sure what they want to major in yet. With so many core classes, it gives students the opportunity to test the waters in many different areas of study and really figure out what subjects catch their interest.”

An Uncommon Core — Profile

”My biochemistry major and pre-med minor are a great undergrad path toward my career goals, but so is Nazareth’s core curriculum. The core’s emphasis on investigating questions through different disciplines and relating the coursework to hands-on learning will take me farther than a typical biochem degree. The liberal arts courses further develop speaking and communication skills, which are essential for physicians. And learning to write persuasively will also help me seek research funds someday.”

Your first days on campus will be filled with discovery—and you’ll happily find countless things to do here outside class. Catch an athletic event at Golden Flyer Stadium.
