2018 NAVY men's CROSS COUNTRY AARON LANZEL

Head Coach • First Season First Year at Navy Navy ‘03 Lanzel was announced as the head coach of the Navy men’s cross country team in August of 2018. A 2003 USNA graduate and decorated Midshipmen, Lanzel is no stranger to the program as he competed for Navy’s cross country and track and field teams during his time as an undergrad (1999-2003) before joining the United States Navy in the aviation community. Lanzel was an accomplished student-athlete for the Midshipmen beginning with his freshman season of action in the Fall of 1999 with the cross country team. A distance specialist, he’d ply his craft with both the cross country and track and field programs in Annapolis all four years. The captain of the 2002 cross country team and 2003 outdoor track and field team, Lanzel competed 11 times versus Army in Star Meets and came away with a 9-2 record. His name still appears in the Navy track and field record books as a member of the fastest indoor distance medley relay team in history (9:39.17 – 3/3/2002), as well as holding a top-10 time in the outdoor 1,500 meters (3:44.25 – 4/11/2003). He concluded his intercollegiate career at Navy by collecting the Class of 2003 Naval Academy Athletic Association Sword. The sword is given to the individual who contributed the most to athletics during their four years at the Naval Academy. After graduation, Lanzel was commissioned as a pilot in the U.S. Navy. Serving from 2004 through 2010, he completed flight training and was a pilot and Mission Commander of the P-3C Orion aircraft. He was deployed to both the Pacific and Middle East with the majority of his time spent in Iraq, where he completed 99 combat missions.

2

In addition to his service with the United States Navy, Lanzel, a sub-4:00 miler, was able to make time to compete in national track and field events. At the 2004 USATF Indoor National Championships, he finished fifth overall at 1500 meters, though his crowning achievement in national competition was earning his way into the semifinals of the 2004 Olympic Trials for the United States in the same event. He is one of just 11 USNA graduates to have competed in either the Olympics or Olympic Trials for the United States in track and field. After his experience with the Olympic Trials, Lanzel competed on the U.S. Military World team in cross country in 2006 (in Tunisia), 2008 (Switzerland), 2010 (Belgium) and in track in 2003 (Italy) and 2011 (Brazil). Following his active duty with the U.S. Navy, he came back to the Academy as an assistant under Al Cantello from June 2010 through December 2013. During that span on staff, the Mids finished in first place in the Patriot League in 2010, 2011 and 2013 with a second place result in 2012, the only blemish on the perfect run of titles. Four Midshipmen earned All-Patriot League First Team honors with another 14 garnering spots on the second team from 2010 to 2013. With Lanzel’s assistance, Cantello was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2013. From 2013 to 2015, Lanzel turned his attention to engineering and consulting with the Medtronic organization. While employed at Medtronic, Lanzel developed algorithms, hardware, software and training programs for physiological monitoring systems that utilized heart rate, HRV, anaerobic threshold, breathing rate, VO2max, speed, and accelerometry. He completed two U.S. Provision Patent Applications. As a consultant, he trained and advised coaches associated with the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and NCAA, as well as special force groups in the military. Lanzel becomes the fifth head coach in the storied history of the Navy men’s cross country program following Louis Mang (1922-26), Earl Thompson (1927-51), Jim Gehrdes (1952-67) and Al Cantello (1968-2018). A 2003 USNA graduate with a degree in electrical engineering, Lanzel lives in Annapolis with his wife Ashley and daughter Aletheia.

2018 NAVY meN'S CROSS COUNTRY Season Outlook

Willie McCool Monument

After an offseason of changes for the Navy men’s cross country team, the Mids will get a chance on Saturday to get their 2018 season underway at the Salisbury Fall Classic. Racing at Winter Place Park in Salisbury, Saturday’s action will mark the head coaching debut of USNA alum Aaron Lanzel (‘03), as well as the potential collegiate debuts for the majority of its 14-man freshmen class. Coming off back-to-back appearances at the NCAA Championship and the retirement of program staple, Al Cantello after 55 years at the helm of the Midshipmen, Lanzel and senior team captain Michael Karls will be tasked with trying to lead the program back to the nation’s premier event for a third straight year, a plateau achieved only once in Navy’s storied history (1974-75-76). All-time, Navy has appeared at 12 NCAA Championships. • Karls competed for the Mids in all seven events in 2017 as a then-junior with some of his highlights being a ninth-place finish at at the Army-Navy Star Meet and a 10th at the Navy Invitational. Karls finished in 27th place at the 2017 Patriot League Championship with a time of 25:21.1. Juniors Jake Brophy and Kevin Murray join Karls as returners from Navy’s Patriot League Championship starting lineup. • A top performer for the Mids over his first two seasons, Brophy has earned backto-back Second Team All-Patriot League honors, as well as a spot on the 2017 NCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team. At the league championship meet in 2017, he placed eighth overall (24:31.4) before coming back at the regional and recording a 14th-place result at 30:49.9. • Murray has been right there with his classmate as he has collected a 2016 Second Team All-Patriot League nod before placing fifth at the Patriot League Championship meet in 2017 with a time of 24:25.3 and earning first team status. At the NCAA MidAtlantic Regional, Murray came in 26th. Murray was the first or second-best finishing Midshipmen in six of the team’s seven races in 2017. • Connor Nicholson is a third junior who’ll bring experience to the freshmen-laden 2018 squad. At the 2017 Patriot League Championship, Nicholson placed 43rd overall at 25:51.6. The departure of three regular scorers due to graduation will open up a host of opportunities for the Mids’ underclass to step into leading roles this season. Ben Cracraft, Julian Perez and Quinn Schneider are a trio of talented sophomores, who will be looked upon to challenge for spots in the team’s lineup. • Cracraft’s freshman season was highlighted by a fourth-place finish at the Salisbury Fall Classic. • Perez started his collegiate career with a fifth-place result at the Salisbury race before seeing action as some of Navy’s more high profile competitions, such as the Roy Griak Invite and Paul Short Run. He concluded his season with time of 26:10.4 at the Patriot League Championship to place 51st. • The winner of the 2017 Salisbury Fall Classic, Schneider was Navy’s seventhfinishing runner at the Roy Griak in Minnesota with a time of 27:33.1 that ranked 89th in the field. Schneider placed 60th at the Patriot League Championship at 26:38.2. Lanzel notes freshmen Ashwin Briggs, Miguel Mathias, Luke Murphy, Hunter Petrik, and Grant Van Valkenburg as a few of the newest Navy runners that are eager for the challenge of making an impact on the program.

The Willie McCool Monument on the USNA Cross Country Course memorializes Navy’s 1982 team captain that was one of seven astronauts that perished in Space Shuttle Columbia during re-entry on February 1, 2003. The last audible transmission received from Columbia before the tragedy occurred at 8:59 a.m. that morning - 16 minutes from the shuttle’s scheduled landing at 9:15 a.m. On Navy’s home course during his senior season in 1982, McCool recorded a career-best time of 24:27 - which stands as the 28th-fastest Navy time in course history. The monument is located where he would have been 8:27 into the race during that day - 16 minutes from home. McCool, 41, was a former test pilot in the Navy and served that role for the STS-107 (Space Shuttle Columbia). He received a bachelor of science degreee in applied science from the U.S Naval Academy in 1983, a master of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1985, and a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1992. McCool, as a member of the Blue Team, worked with many experiments and was also responsible for maneuvering Columbia as part of several experiments mounted in the shuttle’s payload bay. Selected by NASA in 1996, McCool was making his first spaceflight.

2018 NAVY meN'S CROSS COUNTRY Patriot League H Navy won the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the fifth-straight time and sixth in the last seven years. H Navy swept the men’s and women’s President’s Cup Titles, the 11th time the feat has been accomplished since 1990-91 and the first since Bucknell achieved the honor in 2010-11. Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army West Point, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2017-18 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: H 99 Patriot League teams (47.0 percent of League teams) earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with a Patriot League record 90 squads earning perfect scores. H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, and tied for the national lead with the Ivy League for the highest percentage of teams earning the honor at 47.0 percent. H The League’s 95 percent graduation success rate (GSR) is the second-best mark in the nation, finishing in the top-two in each year since the rating has been released in 2013. All 10 member schools were at 90 percent or higher, each exceeding the record-high national GSR of 87 percent. In addition the League’s 84 percent Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) places it as the national leader for the fifth-consecutive year. H Nine student-athletes earned Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Megan Hagerty (Women’s Soccer) and Stephen Born (Baseball), Army West Point’s Kenneth Brinson (Football) and Matt Ball (Baseball). Second team honorees include Navy’s Sydney Fortson (Women’s Soccer) and third team recipients include Bucknell’s Kendall Ham (Women’s Soccer), Navy’s Patricia Mattingly (Volleyball), Bucknell’s Jeff Gottesman (Baseball), Lehigh’s Conor Gaffney (Men’s Lacrosse). H 30 Patriot League student-athletes received Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. H There were a Patriot League record 3,011 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2017-18. H Navy’s Stephen Born (Baseball) and Shawn Anderson (Men’s Basketball) were both named to the Senior CLASS Award first team, while Army West Point’s Luke Morrison (Men’s Basketball) was placed on the second team.

H Navy and Loyola Maryland both qualified for the 2018 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships, marking the first time the League received two bids to the tournament. The Mids and Greyhounds both won their first-round matchups, with Navy advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to defending national champion No. 1 Maryland. H Also winning NCAA Tournament contests in 2017-18 were Colgate men’s soccer, Boston University field hockey, Army West Point baseball, combining with Navy and Loyola Maryland women’s lacrosse for seven tournament victories. H 24 Patriot Leaguers were All-America selections, with first-team status for Lehigh’s Dom Bragalone (Football), Boston University’s Ally Hammel (Field Hockey), Loyola Maryland’s Pat Spencer and Foster Huggins (Men’s Lacrosse) and Navy’s Jenna Collins (Women’s Lacrosse).
