NAVCO Highlights  Continuation of Village Council Elections  DAVCO’s AGM  National Task Force Team  New NAVCO Peace Corp.  Activities for month of June

The 2010 Village Council Elections came to a completion on June 6, 2010. Despite all the heavy campaigning, back and forth harsh comments, name calling, hitting, everything else went extremely well. As you may all know that the two major political parties were there to the very end of every village elections. The UDP had claimed victory for majority of the slates. At this present moment all swearingin is near completion in the villages’ country wide. All hundred and ninety one (191) villages in the country north to south and east to west have a chairman and six council members. We at the National Association of Village Councils congratulates all newly elected village council’s members and re-elected members and looks forward to working closely with you all, to ensure that each council will be great leaders in their communities and to be assertive and effective. We like to thank the Election and

Boundaries for a well conducted 2010 Village Council Elections, Police Department for making every village council election run safely and smoothly, and also the District Association of Village Councils (DAVCO) Board Members who worked tirelessly throughout the entire village councils.

DAVCO’S AGM 2010 The National Executive Board met on the May 14th, 2010 and they have set the dates for all the DAVCO AGMs (Annual General Meeting).

At the DAVCO AGMs, the District Association of Village Councils Executive Board, village leaders, and Area Representatives come together to discuss challenges that are affecting Village Councils. The President of DAVCO Board members along with the village leaders also get to submit resolutions, which are presented at the NAVCO National AGM. This year, each DAVCO’s AGMs will elect a new DAVCO Board for each District. National Association of Village Councils encourages all village leaders to attend their District AGM. DATES OF DAVCO AGM (as of today’s date) Toledo District – June 26, 2010 Corozal District – June 27, 2010 Stann Creek District – July 4, 2010 Orange Walk District – July 3, 2010 Belize District – July 11, 2010 Cayo District – July 18, 2010

NATIONAL TASK FORCE TEAM The Cabinet approved the Ministry of Labor, Local Government and Rural 2

Development to proceed with the implementation of Belize National Task Force (NTF) Village Boundaries Delineation effective June 2010. These Village Boundaries Delineation Criteria sets Village Boundaries categories:     

Residential areas Recreational space Traditional Boundaries Selected farm land Provision for future village expansion

The National Task Force and District Task Force include representatives from:  Min. of Rural Development  DAVCO  Lands and Surveys Department  Min. of Agriculture  Forestry Department  Toledo Alcalde Association  Area Representatives The National Task Force will launch the project plan to the District Task Forces with details to include:  Structure and terms of reference to District Task Force  Criteria and procedures to begin process of boundary delineation.

Introducing Larry Smith New NAVCO Peace Corp

Hi everyone, this is Larry Smith, NAVCO’s new Peace Corp Volunteer from California, by way of his hometown of Houston, Texas. Larry has been a corporate attorney for the past 25 years and prior to joining the Peace Corps was a partner in a 100attorney San Francisco Law Firm. He graduated from Columbia Law School in New York City and has an M.B.A. from the University of Texas. Over the next two years, Larry hopes the thousands of hours he has spent reading arcane laws and regulations will be of benefit as he works with the National Association of Village Councils and the Ministry of Labor, Local Government and Rural Development. He is 56 years old, a committed bachelor and his great love is baseball.
