#NAUSTRONG MEDIA POLICIES The athletics communications office is located in the press box on the west side of the Walkup Skydome. The phone number is (928) 523-6792 or 6330 and the fax number is 523-6793. MEDIA OPPORTUNITY Head coach Eric Heins is available upon request. Other coaches and individual athletes may be requested as well. Special requests for availability may be made to the athletics communications office. INTERVIEW POLICY All athlete interviews must be coordinated through the Athletics Communications office at least one day in advance. No interviews or photo shoots will be conducted on days prior to races. Out-of-town media should contact the athletics communications office to make arrangements for phone interviews. HEINS’ INTERVIEWS Eric Heins and his staff are generally available for interviews during standard workweek hours. Contact Brian Campbell in the athletics communications office at 928-523-1017 to coordinate all interviews with coach Eric Heins. PRACTICE Daily cross country workouts are open to both the public and the media unless otherwise noted. Media planning to attend cross country workouts should notify the athletics communications office in advance to confirm start times and to arrange interviews. PHOTOGRAPHERS If photographers and/or videographers wish to shoot the athletes, prior notification of at least one day before the event must be given. Contact Brian Campbell in the athletics communication office to do so.

POST-RACE Each NAU athlete will be made available for interviews upon request after his/her race is completed. Please note, the athletes frequently perform a “cool down” run shortly after a scheduled race. In order to avoid waiting for an interview after the cool down, reach out to Brian Campbell as soon as possible with specific athlete requests following the competition. MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME Arizona does not move its clock ahead in the spring or back in the fall. As a result, Flagstaff time coincides with the Pacific time zone through Nov. 6. The rest of the season, NAU is compatible with the Mountain time zone. LUMBERJACKS ONLINE Releases, statistics, rosters and breaking news are available at the athletics web site, located at www.nauathletics.com. The ‘Jacks certainly have the tools to create a season for the history books. Futsum Zienasellassie, one of NAU’s most decorated distance athletes in recent history, and Nathan Weitz will don the blue and gold for a final season after redshirting in 2015. Cory Glines and Tyler Day will also be back after solid campaigns last year, while redshirt junior Andy Trouard and New Zealand imports Matt Baxter and Geordie Beamish round out the projected and stacked Lumberjack line-up.

can make the top-seven and make the top-five, I haven’t seen that in the last nine years I’ve been coaching this team,” said Heins. “We’ve obviously had some really good teams and we’ve had a lot of high profile athletes upfront, but this team from No. 1 to No. 10 is the deepest I’ve seen.”
“It’s really fun right now because all of last year we had four of our male athletes redshirt that we knew could be in the top-five,” said Heins. “To plan something like this, go through a whole year without them and actually get them all back for this season is great.” The depth is going to play a critical factor in the success of this men’s team, which—before last season—had won eight-straight conference titles. And while Heins is very skilled at curbing expectations and remaining humble when it comes to the NAU distance program, even he can’t help but acknowledge just how special this team could be. “When you look at the number of guys we have that

Experience will be an asset on the women’s side as well, as two-time NCAA National Championship participant and 2015 All-Big Sky and All-Mountain Region athlete Melanie Townsend returns for her final cross country season with fellow all-conference runner Paige Gilchrist and teammate Kylie Goo. Sophomores Mikayla Malaspina and Miranda Myers represent the young blood on the team, while transfers Emily Roughan (Auckland University of Technology) and Karina Ernst (Syracuse) add some more veteran balance to the women’s roster.

The lessons learned from that event coupled with the fact the projected women’s line-up has a combined 11 years of collegiate cross country experience will surely aid this year’s team in attempting to catch defending conference champ Weber State. “That’s the challenge for our women: to look at what Weber State has been doing and to get up there and run with them like they did a couple years ago,” said Heins.
“The strength of the women’s team is going to be the upperclassmen with Mel, Paige, Kylie and Karina being in their fourth year of competition,” said Heins. “That’s a very good strength to have. We’re hoping they can be good leaders for the group, stay healthy and get to the end of the year with that competitive fire still going.” The women will look to improve upon a third-place finish at conference championships last year, a race in which they ran well but ended up a little too spaced out as a team headed toward the finish.

Heins
Eric Heins enters his tenth season as the head coach at Northern Arizona University and seventh as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. He has won 26 Big Sky Championships and produced eight top-10 national finishes in his first nine seasons at NAU. In his nine years since returning to Flagstaff, Heins has also been named Coach of the Year by the Big Sky Conference 25 times, including three of those titles coming during the most recent indoor and outdoor track & field seasons.
The 2015 season saw the Lumberjack men miss out on a ninth-straight conference title at Big Sky Championships in Cedar City, Utah—finishing as the conference runner-up— but the youth on the team grew up quickly and showed a great amount of promise under Heins’ direction. Redshirt-sophomore Cory Glines and freshman Tyler Day went on to become All-Big Sky athletes alongside teammates Harvey Nelson and Jeffery Miller, while Day also earned All-Region honors with a 14th-place finish at NCAA Mountain Regionals. The women followed up their 2014 conference championship performance with a third-place showing at Big Sky Championships in 2015, with workhorses Melanie Townsend and Paige Gilchrist both earning All-Big Sky

Townsend went on to secure All-Region honors with her redshirt-senior teammate Kayla Freeman at NCAA Mountain Regionals, and the Australia native followed up that race by representing the Lumberjacks for the second-straight season at NCAA Championships. Heins and the Cross Country Program (2007-2014)
HISTORY
In 2014, Heins guided the men’s cross country team to its eighth-straight Big Sky Conference Championship, while also helping the women’s squad secure its second conference title in the last six seasons. The men’s team went on to compete at the NCAA Championships, where they earned a fourth-place finish thanks in part to junior Futsum Zienasellassie’s individual performance. Zienasellassie’s third-place finish in 2014 was the third time in the Heins era that a cross country member placed in the top-three at nationals. The 2013 cross county teams continued to flourish during the Heins era, as the men’s team secured its seventh-consecutive Big Sky Championship, and ninth-consecutive individual title. The Lumberjack men also finished the season ranked

#NAUSTRONG second in the country, thanks in part to All-American performances by Brian Shrader, Matt McElroy and Zienasellassie.
Missouri State, where he spent three years coaching the Redhawks to six different Ohio Valley Conference Championships.
Under Heins, the cross country program has finished in the top-10 eight times at NCAA Championships with 11 athletes earning cross country All-American accolades.
Heins returned to NAU as a head coach after serving as an assistant during the 2006-07 season at Texas Christian University. In his only season with the TCU Horned Frogs, he guided both the men’s and women’s teams to top-10 finishes at the NCAA South Central Regional. He also saw five of his runners honored as Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes.
Academically, the cross country teams have received the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award five times under Heins’ direction, while his student-athletes from both cross country and track & field have earned a combined 463 Big Sky All-Academic honors since 2007. Former NAU cross country and track & field star David McNeill was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team in 2009 and 2010, while also being named the 2010 Track and Field Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Heins began his coaching career as an assistant in 2000 at Indiana and ran for Cincinnati from 1995-99. He earned his bachelor’s degree in health promotion and education. At the 1997 Indoor Conference USA Championships, he achieved his highest individual accomplishment by placing third in the 3,000m. He also notched top-10 finishes in both the indoor and outdoor 5,000m, as well as the outdoor 10,000m.
Heins has also had three student-athletes earn academic All-American honors, while Lopez Lomong became Heins’ first athlete to be inducted into the NAU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013. Before Being Named NAU’s Head Coach From 2001-03, Heins served as an assistant for the Lumberjacks under then-Head Coach Ron Mann. During his first tenure, the men’s team finished as high as fourth place at the NCAA Championships, while the women took home a 10th place finish. From there, Heins went to Southeast
In 2001, Heins earned a master’s in kinesiology from Indiana University. In November 2007, he competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon in New York, N.Y. Other accolades include winning the St. Louis Marathon in 2004 and placing first in his age group, and fifth overall, in the 2000 Marine Corps Marathon.

Cornfield
Jarred Cornfield is entering his second season as a graduate assistant coach at NAU. Cornfield will specialize in distance running for the cross country team while also assisting Coach Heins on a daily basis. Cornfield continues to play a key role in recruiting for the cross country program. Previously, Cornfield attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. At Liberty, Cornfield competed in the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championship as a member of the cross country squad, finishing sixth for the Flames. Cornfield also notched a 25:30.4 mark in the 8K and a 32:03 time in the 10K, both personal-bests. Cornfield built an impressive resume as a member of the LU track and field program, as well. In four seasons for the Flames, Cornfield advanced to the Big South Outdoor 1,500 meter final all four years, never finishing outside the top-eight. Cornfield also holds the university’s eighth-fastest mile time (4:15.33) and recorded a 2:25.94 time in the 1,000 meter at the IC4A Championship as a freshman, a mark that stands as the second-best in program history.

I get to work with Coach Heins and Coach Rosenfeld who are very good at what they do and provide a great amount of wisdom and insight into the world of collegiate coaching. #NAUSTRONG COACHING STAFF/SUPPORT STAFF During his time as a student athletic trainer, Trudo assisted the sports medicine staff with the health care needs of the national championship football and women’s soccer teams, in addition to the cheer & dance and baseball teams as well as intramural sports. Prior to attending FSU, Trudo served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps infantry from 2007-11, including two deployments to Afghanistan.

Trudo is a certified Professional Rescuer and AED/CPR certified through the American Red Cross. He is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Arizona Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Lackey
In his free time, Trudo enjoys outdoor activities with his dog Archer such as mountain biking, hiking, and exploring, as well as watching his favorite sport, rugby.
Sam Lackey joined the Northern Arizona strength and conditioning staff in the summer of 2016. He works with the volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country/distance programs, and throwers, while also assisting with football.

Lackey previously spent time working with the University of Maryland football strength program, Georgetown University football and basketball programs, and Vanderbilt University football and baseball programs. Most recently Lackey was at the University of Texas-Arlington where he served as a graduate assistant for the strength and conditioning program. He is certified through the NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), CSCCa Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC), as well as USAW Level 1 Certified. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Science from Texas State University and earned a Master’s of Science in Exercise Physiology from the University of Texas-Arlington.

Outside of his career, Lackey is an avid outdoorsman that enjoys bow hunting, waterfowl hunting, fishing, and spending time with his dog Bowen. Lackey is engaged to Aly Presswood, a former softball player at Ole Miss.

Campbell
Brian Campbell begins his second year as a graduate assistant in the Athletics Communications office at Northern Arizona University. Campbell serves as the sports information director for cross country, track and field and women’s golf. Prior to NAU, Campbell attended Illinois State University in Normal, Ill., where he graduated with a degree in public relations and a minor in civic engagement and responsibility. As a senior, Campbell interned with Redbird Athletic Communications, where he served as the primary sports information contact for ISU men’s tennis. In addition to his work with the men’s tennis team, Campbell was also heavily involved as a resource for Redbird football, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball and baseball. During his time as an undergrad, Campbell also interned with the Great Plains LIFE Foundation and the Illinois State University Alumni Association in its downtown Chicago office. Campbell was a member of ISU’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter from 2012-2015 as well.
Trudo
Jeffrey Trudo is a certified athletic trainer seeking his Master’s Degree from NAU where he started work in the fall of 2016. His primary responsibility will be the track & field and cross country teams.
Campbell is originally from River Grove, Ill., a small suburb on the northwest boarder of Chicago. His favorite sports teams include the Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He has two younger siblings and his hobbies include hanging out with family/friends, working out and watching TV.
Trudo graduated from the Florida State University with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Athletic Training.
Currently, Campbell is working toward his Master’s of Arts in communication studies at NAU.

NAU CROSS COUNTRY
2015
Entering the 2015 campaign, the Northern Arizona University men’s cross country team was in search of its ninth-straight Big Sky championship, while the women’s side was attempting to defend its 2014 conference title. In addition to the team accolades, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Eric Heins was the reigning two-time conference coach of the year. Unlike previous years, though, the men were expected to go through what many would call a “transition period” or “rebuilding process” in 2015. Losing some key athletes following the 2014 season coupled with the fact this season’s speculated one-two punch of Futsum Zienasellassie and Nathan Weitz were redshirting, the Lumberjack men faced a challenge unlike any other during the Heins era. For the women, expectations remained high with the returns of redshirt senior leader Kayla Freeman and redshirt junior Melanie Townsend. Redshirt sophomores Paige Gilchrist and Kylie Goo were the other two staples for the Lumberjack squad, solidifying the women’s top-four athletes.

#NAUSTRONG GEORGE KYTE CLASSIC HISTORY This season marks the 36th running of the George Kyte Classic hosted by Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff’s Buffalo Park.The meet is named for the late Dr. George Kyte, Professor Emeritus of history at Northern Arizona. Dr. Kyte was a longtime supporter of Lumberjack Athletics, track & field and cross country in particular. The event was ran with Dr. Kyte in attendance until 2004.

Arizona University
Northern Arizona University provides an outstanding undergraduate residential education strengthened by important research, graduate and professional programs, and a responsive distance learning network delivering programs throughout Arizona. The Mountain Campus has a student population of more than 20,000 at its main campus in Flagstaff and at sites across the state. NAU was established in 1899 as the Northern Arizona Normal School. Flagstaff, with a population of about 57,000, is rich in cultural diversity. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40. With its elevation of 7,000 feet and a four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
Rita Hartung Cheng serves as the 16th president of Northern Arizona University. Under her leadership, NAU has embarked on an aggressive mission to thrive in the fast-changing environment of higher education. She has amplified the university’s strengths, demonstrating its excellence in pursuing the discovery, use and advancement of knowledge. She has set forth a vision of excellence in education through student-centered teaching, a robust research environment and inclusive support services focused on success measured through retention and graduation rates. Dr. Cheng oversees an operating budget of more than $550 million and 4,600 faculty and staff. NAU offers more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs to its 29,000 students. Enrollment growth has increased steadily, and the university’s research profile is recognized on an international level. NAU is designated as a high research university by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. At NAU, a comprehensive network of staff, advisers and peers complement talented and dedicated faculty in supporting students of all backgrounds. Dr. Cheng’s commitment to inclusiveness and a supportive academic community has made NAU a preferred destination for non-traditional and underrepresented students who are taking the next step in pursuing a university education. Dr. Cheng regards campus as an integral part of the local community. Dr. Cheng believes NAU’s success should directly impact lives in communities in Arizona and throughout the world. She is com-
mitted to building partnerships, which drive economic and cultural vitality. The university serves as an important economic engine in the region, contributing $2 billion annually to the state economy. One in five jobs in Coconino County is directly or indirectly linked to the university. An accountant by training, she leads by relying on values, analyzing data and inviting the input of stakeholders. She also emphasizes shared governance, transparency, communication, accountability and inclusiveness. Dr. Cheng arrived at NAU in August 2014 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where she served as chancellor for four years and was a professor of accounting. She previously spent 22 years in faculty and administrative roles at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, including five years as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. A certified public accountant and certified government financial manager (inactive), Dr. Cheng is internationally recognized for her research in government and nonprofit accounting. Dr. Cheng is part of the Arizona Board of Regents’ Enterprise Executive Committee, responsible for driving achievement of statewide goals. Dr. Cheng earned a Ph.D. in management from Temple University’s Fox School of Business and Management, an MBA from the University of Rhode Island and a bachelor’s in business administration with honors from Bishop‘s University in Quebec. Along with her vision for NAU, Dr. Cheng brings her experience and leadership to many boards and organizations including the NCAA Division 1 Board of Governors Finance and Audit Committee, Big Sky President’s Council, Arizona State Board of Education, Higher Learning Commission Board of Trustees, American Association of State Colleges and Universities Board of Directors, Arizona Women in Higher Education Presidential Sponsor, Arizona Commerce Authority, and is an active member of the Phoenix Leadership Council, Northern Arizona Leadership Alliance, Southern Arizona Leadership Council, Phoenix Chamber of Commerce and the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce.

#NAUSTRONG VICE PRESIDENT FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS
Dr. Lisa Campos was hired in April 2012 as Northern Arizona’s Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. Since her arrival, Campos has guided the Lumberjacks to Back-to-Back Big Sky Conference Presidents’ Cup trophies; an award that recognizes the department’s overall excellence in competition and in the classroom. In 2013, NAU became the fourth institution to win multiple Presidents’ Cups, winning their second (first was 2005-06); and then followed it up during the 2013-14 school year. NAU has captured 24 team conference championships during Campos’ time in Flagstaff, while nine teams have advanced to postseason competition. The Lumberjacks’ stellar athletic achievements have led to the men’s programs winning the Big Sky All-Sports Trophy three consecutive times from 2014-16. The women’s teams captured the trophy in 2014, and have been runners-up the last two years. During the 2015-16 school year, the men’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams won their fifth straight title for each, while the women’s team captured the outdoor crown. Volleyball won the Big Sky Regular Season and Tournament Championship to earn its first NCAA appearance berth since 1999. Swimming & diving captured its third straight Western Athletic Conference Championship defeating its nearest competition by over 300 points. During the 2015-16 school year, NAU finished with a 3.12 overall cumulative grade point average. Seven of 13 teams finished the 2015-16 academic year with a GPA of at least 3.00 led by the swimming and diving team, who recorded a 3.44 gpa. Four student-athletes received CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honors, while Caleb Hoover picked up his second CoSIDA/ Capital One Academic All-American First Team honoree. NAU had 118 total student-athletes earn All-Academic honors by the Big Sky and WAC. A total of 58 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2015-16 academic year with a cumulative gpa of 3.20, while 184 Dean’s List honors were bestowed. Campos and the Lumberjacks continue to give back to the community as Lumberjack student-athletes set a new record for community service hours with 5,428; beating last year’s mark of 5,327. Dr. Campos currently sits on the prestigious NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee, a subcommittee of the new governance model. She also sits on the Board of Directors at NACWAA and for the local United Way of Northern Arizona. At the time of her hire at NAU, Campos became one of 26 females and the youngest in the country to lead a Division I program, including 13 head athletic administrators at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Campos took over the leadership of the Lumberjack Athletics Department after serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Texas at El Paso from 2006 to 2012. Campos served as the sport administrator for several Miner sports programs and was also the primary administrator for compliance, CHAMPS/Life Skills, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, and cheerleading. While at UTEP, Dr. Campos assisted with athletic facility enhancements and co-directed the planning and design of the $2.6 million Helen of Troy Softball Complex, which opened in September 2005. In 2006, Campos was the NCAA liaison for the Self Study Re-

port for NCAA Certification and continued to oversee all gender, minority equity, and student welfare strategic plans. In 2005, she created the Athletics Diversity Graduate Assistantship Program and served on the UTEP Women’s Resource Advisory Board. Campos also served as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator and the Assistant Dean of Students within the UTEP Division of Student Affairs during her time in El Paso. While at UTEP, Dr. Campos had the opportunity to serve on a number of NCAA Committees, including the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, the NCAA Rifle Committee, and chaired the NCAA Women’s Soccer Committee. Dr. Campos holds a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at El Paso. She graduated from Colorado State University where she earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Business Administration and a master’s of science degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Campos is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) and Flagstaff Leadership Program. A native of Las Animas, Colo., Campos is married to Darren D’Attilio. They live in Flagstaff with their son, Christopher.
