CONSTRUCTION AT RICHARD SIMPSON PARK CONTINUES Concrete, walls, and utility work are underway at the new lake house at Richard Simpson Park. Construction is schedule to be completed by late 2018.

C

onstruction continues at Richard Simpson Park as contracters work to complete lake house utilities, walls, and access drive to the lake. In 2015, the City Council directed staff to proceed with the design of phase one improvements to Richard Simpson Park. The design plans were completed June 2017 and presented to City Council for approval in August 2017 sealing a contract with Steele Freeman, Inc. The project aligns with the Arlington City Council priority to Champion Great Neighborhoods. The $3.5 million project has a contract time of 426 calendar days and a projected completion of December 16, 2018. Construction is funded through the 2008 Bond Referendum and Arlington Tomorrow Foundation. Richard Simpson Park is a 9-acre city park on the shoreline of Lake Arlington. It is one of only two Arlington parks that provide public access to Lake Arlington for recreational usage.

34

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L LY F U N . O R G

The 2008 Bond Election included $1 million to replace the existing Richard Simpson Park lake activity room and office, which was constructed in 1960. This building was used for a variety of rental and recreational activities and due to its location in the 100 year floodplain, physical conditions, and accessibility challenges, options for reinvesting in the structure were very limited. Since the park did not have an existing master plan, the project included site master planning, which included relocation of the lake activity room and office building where it can be elevated from the floodplain. With the park infrastructure being 30-plus years of age, the master plan also provides guidance for any future improvements as the City retires aging assets. Arlington Parks will post monthly updates on this project at NaturallyFun.org. For more information about this project, contact Eric Seebock at Eric.Seebock@ArlingtonTX.gov.

TEXAS RANGERS GOLF CLUB TO OPEN SUMMER 2018 The new course will open Summer 2018 out of a temporary club house.

A

rlington Golf and the Texas Rangers announced a new partnership on January 12, 2018, to create the world’s only Major League Baseball-branded golf course — the Texas Rangers Golf Club — which is scheduled to open later this summer. This collaborative branding partnership, along with $24 million in course renovations, affords the opportunity for Arlington to offer a destination golf course not only for residents but for visitors to the Rangers ballpark, Texas Live! and other Entertainment District attractions.

“The Texas Rangers are proud to continue our great partnership with the City of Arlington on yet another outstanding project,” Rob Matwick, Texas Rangers Executive Vice President for Business Operations, said. “Ditto Golf Course has a long tradition in North Arlington and Rangers’ team personnel have been playing at that location for many years. We feel this presents a great cross-promotional opportunity for the club, and we look forward to working with the City to make Texas Rangers Golf Club a first-class destination.”

The American Dream City’s newest golf course is located at 701 Brown Boulevard in north Arlington.

Course renovations were led by the Arlington-based golf course architecture firm of Colligan Golf Design. The firm has worked successfully with private clubs, daily fee courses, and municipalities over a 30-year career that includes numerous awards and accolades from industry leaders.

“As the world’s only MLB-themed golf course, this course is sure to be a ‘bucket list’ item for baseball fans across the globe, especially our Rangers fan right here in Arlington,” Mayor Jeff Williams said. To celebrate the announcement, City and Texas Rangers officials, including former players and coaches, took part in a Closest to the Pin competition. Participants hit a golf ball from Home Plate to a Texas Rangers Golf Club flag planted in Globe Life Park’s Center Field. 36

City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N A T U R A L LY F U N . O R G

“The opportunity to partner with the Texas Rangers on the world’s only MLB-themed golf club is a tremendous win for our Arlington Golf portfolio, as the Rangers name carries a certain cachet with it,” Golf Services Manager Greg Durante said. “Also, this agreement provides many cross-promotional marketing and advertising opportunities that would not have been possible without the partnership.”

The new layout will stretch to 7,000 yards for low-handicap golfers and potential collegiate events, and will feature four sets of tees to ensure a great playing experience for golfers of all levels. One of the largest driving ranges in the area, coupled with an expansive practice putting green and short-game facility, make Texas Rangers Golf Club a great place to learn the game or seek improvement. The new course includes expanded water collection/retention ponds, and the planting of drought tolerant plant species, which will aid in irrigation and water savings. The course will be irrigated by well water and recycled effluent water. Golf managers will be able to monitor irrigation patterns and schedule waterings down the the indvidual sprinkler head to aide in water savings. A new 33,871-square-foot clubhouse, set to open in spring 2019, will feature a full-service restaurant and bar, covered patio overlooking the golf course, pro shop, locker rooms, and numerous rental and event spaces. “By having a world-class golf facility so close to the entertainment district, it gives our visitors with meetings and conventions the ability to stay and play and ideally keep them in Arlington another day,” Ron Price, president & CEO of the Arlington CVB, said.

Top Left: Arlington Mayor, Jeff Williams hits a golf ball in a Closest to the Pin competition with other officials following the Announcement of the Texas Rangers Golf Club at Globe Life Park on January 12. “Many conventions offer offsite or ancillary activities to the groups and golf is always at the top of the list," Price said. "As we look to grow our hotels in the entertainment district, having a golf course close by with the Ranger's name on it will be a catalyst for Arlington tourism.” The club will host numerous instructional opportunities for both juniors and adults. To keep cost from being a barrier to entry to the game, Arlington Golf has introduced a club trade-in program for junior golfers, while teaching multiple affordable clinics throughout the year such as Get Golf Ready, PGA Junior League and SNAG® or ‘Starting New At Golf’ program. Arlington Golf Professionals have also partnered with AISD and other local school districts to introduce golf within P.E. programs. Financing of the renovation came from a variety of sources, including 2008 & 2014 bond funds and debt service. The course will utilize a dynamic, variable-price rate structure, while offering both a resident and frequent player discount. Golfers can view current rates by visiting ArlingtonGolf.com. Area golfers are encouraged to visit Tierra Verde, Lake Arlington, and Meadowbrook Park Golf Course until Texas Rangers Golf Club is open. “We expect Texas Rangers Golf Club to be one of the premier public golf courses in the region when we open the doors this summer,” Durante said. “I’m not sure you will find a more formidable one-two punch alongside our sister course Tierra Verde Golf Club. Those two will steal the headlines, but we frequently hear how underrated Lake Arlington Golf Course is from first-time players. Those three courses, paired with our nine-hole layout Meadowbrook Park, make up a roster of courses for players of all budgets and skill levels.” Follow progress of the renovation, including course grand opening dates and details, at ArlingtonGolf. com, and by subscribing to our SMS text message updates by texting GOLFTX to 86677.*

SOUTHEAST RECREATION CENTER DESIGN BEGINS The new center will be built in Webb Community Park.

P

lanners have begun the design phase of the new Southeast Recreation Center located at Webb Community Park. Construction is scheduled to begin early 2019 and be completed by the middle of 2020. Funding for the project is provided by the 2014 Bond Funds and will serve the southeast Arlington community. "The new recreation center in southeast Arlington is an amenity that the community has anticipated for a very long time," Parks Planning Manager De'Onna Garner said. "We believe that the center will activate the park site with dynamic indoor and outdoor spaces that will become a welcoming beacon for the residents. The department hopes that the new development will also provide a source of identity and pride for the community."

"It offers residents a common setting to congregate for socialization, recreation, and exercise," FloresStafford said. " All of the centers are a core part of the fabric in the community, offering programming for the community’s youth to the active adult.” For more info about the project, contact Parks Planning Manager De'Onna Garner at DeOnna.Garner@ArlingtonTX.gov.

“We and the community are excited the Southeast Recreation Center," said Assistant Parks Director Venera Flores-Stafford.

Arlington Golf and the Texas Rangers announced a new partnership on Jan. 12, 2018, to create the world’s only Major League Baseball-branded golf course — the Texas Rangers Golf Club — which is scheduled to open later this summer. This collaborative branding partnership, along with $24 million in course renovations, affords the opportunity for Arlington to offer a destination golf course not only for residents but for visitors to the Rangers ballpark, Texas Live! and other Entertainment District attractions. “As the world’s only MLB-themed golf course, this course is sure to be a ‘bucket list’ item for baseball fans across the globe, especially our Rangers fan right here in Arlington,” Mayor Jeff Williams said. The American Dream City’s newest golf course is located at Brown Boulevard and Collins Street in north Arlington. A new clubhouse, set to open in spring 2019, will feature a full-service restaurant and bar, pro shop, multi-purpose rental and event space, and more.

It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas, and the first municipal course in the world, to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony. Opened in 1998 and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has hosted many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament. Tierra Verde has been named the top golf course in the Metroplex for three years (2012-14) by AvidGolfer magazine.* Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses. The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Lessons and clinics are taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.

BRUNCH BETTER AT VENTANA GRILLE!

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues. The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club. The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length. The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here.
