e all want to be happy. It’s one of the things most humans have in common—we seek out that which brings us happiness. But how do we bring the most happiness into our lives? This month, we’re discussing how to “Think Yourself Happy” with seven ways to change your mind and be happier, on page 14. Pink and Flow Yoga Event to Benefit Breast Cancer Treatment

mily Laput, a high school senior who is passionate about the fight against breast cancer, is the Event Coordinator for a special yoga fundraising event, Pink and Flow, held on August 14 from 10:30am to 12:30pm at Riverwalk Circuit Training, in Seymour. The event will start with a one-hour, all-levels vinyasa yoga class and end with raffles and smoothies provided by Robeks, all to benefit the nonprofit organization Seymour Pink. Seymour Pink has been funding local breast cancer patients’ treatment for over 12 years. Laput has been volunteering for Seymour Pink since 2017 and has so far raised over $10,000 for various local charities. “The strength of the Seymour Pink community is unmatched. I’ve never seen a nonprofit with such passion, connection and support from various people and businesses,” explains Laput. “One of the most striking aspects of this organization is that it’s all-volunteer—a community fighting passionately.” Victoria Mellah from Yoga Mobile Studio will be leading the yoga class. “She is amazing and provides modifications for various experience levels so that anyone can be able to participate in the flow,” explains Laput. Ensuring Kids Have Visual Skills for Learning

t is back-to-school time, and parents are often thinking about school supplies, backpacks and fall clothing. One of the most important needs to consider for academic success is healthy vision. Our children’s eyes and how well they work are crucial to effective learning. More than 80 percent of our information comes in through the visual system and there are many

basic visual skills important for learning. These skills include clarity of eyesight, ease of shifting and maintaining focus, tracking eye movements, eye alignment, eye-hand coordination and visual perception. Visual perception includes memory, recognition, retention of information and comprehension. If a child does not have the skills necessary for the demands of their grade, they may struggle with learning, avoid near tasks, or exhibit behavioral problems. In fact, vision problems can cause some of the same signs and symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), like hyperactivity and distractibility. Most parents believe that the vision screening at the pediatrician’s office can assess if there is a vision problem. Unfortunately, the pediatric screening typically only tests distance visual acuity. Most of the learning takes place at near and important skills like focusing and eye teaming are not assessed. Only a handful of doctors specializing in children’s vision and learning perform all the tests necessary to determine if the child’s visual skills can meet the demands of the classroom. These doctors consider the age of the child, grade and type of school they are attending. For example, many schools implement a rigorous program from the early grades that may be above the development of the child’s visual system. As an example, efficient tracking skills are typically not fully developed in boys until nearly 8 years of age, yet children are asked to read in kindergarten. A thorough assessment of a child’s functional vision can determine if the child may have difficulties with reading, writing or even sports performance. Children want to succeed and do their work, but with a deficit in visual skills, the child may have to work harder to get assignments done, causing frustration and possibly even loss of interest in school. They may also experience headaches, fatigue, blinking, inattention or avoidance of near tasks. When a challenge is found, there are a number of treatment options for parents to consider. Sometimes, a low power plus prescription, with or without prism, can aid the child in reading or near tasks until


they develop the skills necessary to focus easily and efficiently without glasses. These developmental glasses relieve stress on the system and allow for the natural development of visual skills. For students experiencing more significant symptoms, glasses alone may not be enough. Vision therapy can be a very effective treatment option. A program of vision therapy can quickly and efficiently develop the visual skills that the child is lacking. In fact, the earlier a vision problem is detected and treated, the more effective and more successful the treatment will be. Basic Vision Skills Necessary for Learning Visual acuity: The ability to see clearly in the distance for viewing the board, an intermediate distance such as on the computer and up close for reading and writing. Accommodation or Eye Focusing: The ability to quickly and accurately maintain clear vision as one shifts from one distance to another, such as when looking from the board to the desk and back, as well as easily maintaining clear vision over time. Oculomotor or Eye Tracking: The ability to keep the eyes on a target, shift the eyes from one object to another, move from word to word while reading or following a moving object like a thrown ball. Visual perception: The ability to understand and remember what is seen in the environment; includes organizing images on a printed page into letters, words and expressing ideas. Recognition: The ability to tell the difference between objects and letters like “b” and “d”. Comprehension: A “picture” in the child’s mind of what is happening in a story they are reading or hearing. Retention: The ability to remember and recall details of what we read or see. Signs that may indicate a child has a vision problem include: complaints of discomfort and fatigue; frequent eye rubbing, squinting or blinking; short attention span; frustration with or avoidance of reading and other close activities; frequent headaches; covering one eye; tilting the head to one side; holding reading materials close to the face; an eye turning in or out; seeing double; losing place, reversing or skipping lines when reading; difficulty remembering what they read.

here are times when we feel buoyant. It’s as if our feet are skimming the ground and our arms are wings. Then there are those days—the dark ones. Our peripheral vision narrows, and even the vibrant colors of nature wear a grey cloak. Living to always strive for happiness can be as exhausting as living in sadness. What if we flipped the script on the whole “choose happiness” movement and focused on being content? The last 18 months have been a living example of tarot’s Hanged Man. This card invites us to look at a situation from a different perspective. This altered perspective offers us growth, strength, empowerment and dare we say, it offers us an opportunity to extend grace to ourselves. In biology, homeostasis is described as a state of relative stable equilibrium. The body is constantly adjusting the biochemical and physiological pathways to maintain this healthy state. What if we applied this concept to our spiritual practice? What if

we treated our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies with as much minute care and detail as our internal elements monitor our glucose, blood oxygen and body temperature? What if we focused on being content instead of happy? When we are content, we feel calmer, we speak kinder and we heal ourselves, others and the planet. There are myriad opportunities in our spiritual practice to temper one etheric body and bring our whole aura back into homeostasis. Here are some favorite tools to keep in our spiritual toolboxes. What’s one change we can make today? Crystals: Crystals have organized lattice structures. They are one of the most consistent and orderly creations of nature. Each crystal belongs to one of the seven crystal systems (or is amorphic) and has its own unique spiritual essence. Crystals can support, assist and/or transmute energy. Seven Ways to Change Your Mind and Be Happier

hat is happiness? Aristotle pondered it, our country’s founders encouraged its pursuit, but only now—thanks to the thriving field of Positive Psychology—have we learned more precisely how to attain and sustain it. In thousands of studies in the last two decades, researchers have watched babies share crackers, put Tibetan monks in brain scanners, asked college students to do kind deeds and explored databases, among other strategies. A major finding has emerged: Happiness is, to a great degree, in our own hands—or more exactly, our own minds. “You get to choose,” says trailblazing researcher Barbara Fredrickson, author of Positivity and Love 2.0 and a professor at the University of North Carolina. “No matter where your river of emotions flows today, over time and with continued effort and attention, you can change its course and location to live a happier, more positive life.” Using advanced brain imaging technology, neuroscientists and psychologists have discovered that the brain is “plastic” and malleable. When we change our thinking and actions in positive ways, brain neurons start rewiring themselves to make newfound happiness settle in, especially if our practices are repetitive. “Interestingly, changes can start quite quickly,” says neuroscientist Andrew Newberg, who has authored 10 books on the brain, emotions and spirituality, including Words Can Change Your Brain. “For those changes to become more fully ingrained, it can take a few months, but it does not necessarily require hours a day for many years.” A change in thinking shifted the behavior and life of John Peterson, a sales manager at a major West Coast auto retailer and editor of SafeDriveGear.com. “I was unhappy and 14

by Ronica O’Hara miserable, so I decided to give gratitude a shot,” he recalls. “It was mechanical to start, but the reactions I got turned into a domino effect.” Instead of giving cursory thanks, he praised a co-worker’s kindness in handing him a daily cup of coffee; now they chat about their families. Instead of “keeping myself to myself,” he offered to help a neighbor he barely knew to clean gutters; now they’re “barbecue besties,” he says, adding, “I was kind of blown away at the incredible effect gratitude had on my life, both in improving my mental health and boosting my relationships. It was a real revelation to me!” Positive psychologists offer two major approaches: adopting habits that encourage happiness and clearing away the mental debris that blocks it. Many books and websites offer a wide range of theories, techniques and tips. “The most effective practices for you are the ones that you enjoy and are willing to do more often,” says Tchiki Davis, Ph.D., a Psychology Today blogger and founder of The Berkeley Well-Being Institute. When it comes to marriage, five positive interactions for every negative one is the “magic ratio” that makes it happy and stable, according to studies by renowned relationship psychologist John Gottman, author of What Makes Love Last. “Successful long-term relationships are created through small words, small gestures and small acts,” he writes.

Berating ourselves for our shortcomings is a sure route to suffering, but applying self-compassion powerfully lowers the volume. It involves three elements: treating ourselves as kindly as we would a dear friend; realizing that making mistakes is intrinsically human so we’re not alone; and non-judgmentally facing our emotions without denying or indulging them, according to its major theorist, psychologist Kristin Neff, author of Self-Compassion: Stop Beating Yourself Up and Leave Insecurity Behind. Numerous studies show that people that practice selfcompassion have less self-doubt and fewer negative thoughts, are less likely to feel anxious or depressed, enjoy better health and relationships and are more resilient and motivated to change.

95 percent are repetitive, says the National Science Foundation. Those noisy mental loops dampen our spirits by repetitively telling us that something regretful should not have happened in the past or is going to happen to blight the future. Few worries have real credence: A Cornell University study found that 85 percent of what people worry about never happens. Of the 15 percent of worries that did happen, 79 percent of people found they handled the problem better than they had expected or that they learned a valuable lesson from it. Cognitive behavioral therapists help clients to examine those beliefs and assumptions, challenge the dysfunctional ones and try out different interpretations to uncover the truth. Victor Blue, a Tampa transportation engineer, examined his difficult relationship with a tyrannical father by asking himself two questions that spiritual teacher and author Byron Katie suggests applying to any painful thought: “Is it true? Can you absolutely know it’s true?” Self-inquiring deeply, Blue realized he had a distorted view: His father had in fact loved him, but had lacked the capacity to show it with warmth or tenderness. “My father started with very little and saw a tough world and treated everyone tough,” he says. “And I came to realize that yes, I am able to father myself.”

most popular and direct approach to happiness is gratitude. Research shows that feeling and expressing thankfulness significantly boosts emotional well-being, makes us feel more connected and generous to others, and improves health and sleep quality. In one study, writing a few sentences of gratitude once per week for 10 weeks increased optimism and hope in participants; they even exercised more and had fewer doctor visits than those writing about aggravations. Writing a thank-you letter to someone we haven’t appreciated enough in the past can induce a sense of well-being that lasts for at least six months, a University of Pennsylvania study found.

Take more time to chill out. Relax a little. What a concept! We must have all been asking/praying for this in one way or another. Don’t forget the opportunity this year has presented. The past decade has shown us a generation of teenage students that have been so stressed with life that they have opted out. Suicide was up on levels we have never seen before because of the all-consuming forces of stress. But where did they learn this from? Their parents, family, TV, society? We have an opportunity now to reclaim that downtime and perhaps even chill out. Tip number two is to chill out. When we enjoy the day-to-day joys of life, we begin to enable our loved ones to do the same.

Less is more. Connections that we made as children are so often taken for granted. The happiest among us have often said that we don’t grow up, we just grow old. Children know this, and relax and enjoy more of the flow of life than many of us are still capable of doing. Rather than allowing social expectations to crush their dreams of fame and fortune, we can try to allow our wisdom to act as their new road map. Many of us have had to downgrade due to loss of work, or opportunity. Contradictory as it may seem, there has been a collective sense of relief that has come with this downgrade. Less “stuff ” clogging our mind means more space to fill with the things that matter. We have all been working around the August 2021 17

hen things are uncertain, we worry. No matter what we call it—projection, ruminating, catastrophizing, conjuring—it is a function of being human. We humans have the unique ability to imagine, which can lead us to picturing wonderful, happy futures, but also to imagining the not-so-wonderful. We may not be able to predict the future, but we’re really good at worrying over it. Psychologists tell us that worry is the cognitive component of anxiety. While it’s hard to say which is the chicken and which is the egg in that pairing, one thing is for sure: (apologies for mixing metaphors) they cross the road together. And while we can come up with all sorts of creative, and mostly negative, possibilities for how things are going to turn out, the truth is that we do not know what will happen. Maybe we are waiting to hear if we made a good impression on that job interview. Maybe we’re setting off on a trip to a place where we don’t speak the language and we don’t know anyone. We could be waiting for test results—from an admission exam to a biopsy to a radon check in the home. No matter what it is that makes us uncertain, from the mundane to the truly scary, worrying can interfere significantly with our happiness.

It can range from temporary or transient to chronic and debilitating. Importantly, those who find themselves on the severe end of the scale should seek the help of a trained professional. The good news is there is something we can do about it. We can stop worrying—or at least minimize it—and start living a happier life. Some great advice comes from the adage, “Prepare for the worst and hope for the best”. When it comes to worrying, this is a good tactic: be prepared. Action can be very uplifting. Progress is visible. Preparation is a great way to get a handle on anxiety. We can do our best, work diligently at laying a sturdy, solid foundation, learn as much as we can and then—and this is the hard part—let it go. We can look back and see that, to the best of our ability, we have done all the things that are under our control. But, maybe that’s not enough. We are not able to predict the future, nor are we able to control everything. No one can. So, what can we do to stop worrying


and start living life? Begin with this: Stay in the present moment and abide with what is known—that we are here now, we are breathing, we are choosing what to think, say and do, right in this moment. A few deep breaths always helps. Just…be. Breathe…and be. Give it a try. In case that doesn’t work, here are a few other exercises that can be helpful to let go of worry. Make a list of worries. Keep a small notebook and pen near the bed. When lying awake, thinking of a long list of worries, start writing. Don’t dictate into a phone or use any electronic device to do this. Use old-fashioned paper. Write it all down: the to-do list, the big worries, the fears. Keep going for five minutes, 10 minutes or half an hour if that’s what it takes. Write it all, then put the list in a drawer, shut off the lights, lay back down and rest. If another worry pops up, let it go for now. Let tonight’s list be tonight’s list. Now is the time to rest, to sleep, to let go. Remember that feelings are not facts. We can make a game of this one, but instead of truth or dare, call this one “Feeling or Fact?” With a little practice, we will soon be able to sort out the feelings from actual facts. And feelings, like the weather, change regularly. Five-minute breathing. Turn off any device that will ring, buzz, vibrate or distract attention in any way. Hang up the actual or figurative “Do Not Disturb” sign. Sit or lie down comfortably. Set a timer for five minutes and take a deep breath in. Exhale. Repeat this a few times and then just breathe normally. Try to focus on the breathing. Let go of any other thoughts that arise and bring the attention back to breathing. Rinse and repeat until the timer goes off. That’s all. Emotions or feelings are neither good nor bad. They are part of being us—human. When we make decisions solely based on emotions, that is called “emotional mind”. When we call on our reasoning skills to analyze facts, evaluate options, examine details and make a conclusion or

decision. This is our “reasonable mind”. Both the emotional mind and the reasonable mind are necessary, but when either one takes over, that imbalance will likely skew our perspective. Think of them as two parts of an equation; adding both together in equal or balanced measure results in “wise mind”. Mindfulness practices are available widely now, as are apps, books, videos and personal teachers. When we use these practices to tap into our feelings (all the

feels) and our reasoning skills (all the thinks), we will become more adept at using our wise mind to stop worrying and live the life we want. When stress occurs, the emotional center of the brain, the amygdala, sends a signal to the hypothalamus, the command center of our brain. A signal is then sent to the adrenal glands to activate the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. Once activated, a series of hormones is released to create the stress response. As we all know, cortisol is our greatest stress managing hormone. Cortisol serves its purpose in a healthy, natural way by helping metabolize glucose, controlling blood pressure and, of course, aiding in our “fight, flight or freeze” response. Over periods of chronic stress, the fight, flight or freeze response cannot turn off. This causes a downward spiral in our health, leading to anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, heart disease, digestive issues and memory impairment. In terms of the health of our brains, studies show that under chronic stress and elevated cortisol, the volume of our brain decreases in size. In other words, our brains actually shrink. We may not even realize the progression of this physical toll on our bodies and brain health. However, there are solutions.

What Can We Do to Manage Stress and Protect Cognitive Health?

Although most stressful events are more than likely out of our control, we do have the strength and capability of grasping control of our mental and cognitive health. There are many supplements that are supported by research that have been shown to be extremely helpful in the health of our brains and management of stress.


Let’s take a look at some supplements and other tips for better cognitive health.

Turmeric. If one is only going to take one supplement, consider turmeric. It has received a great deal of credit for its many benefits and is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. The main active constituent in turmeric, curcumin, is highly recognized for its antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic, antimicrobial and anti-tumor activities. The effect of curcumin on the brain is that it increases a hormone called Brain Derived Growth Factor, which helps improve memory and is beneficial in neurodegenerative diseases. Ashwagandha. “The scripture of longevity”, the supplement Ashwagandha is not only beneficial for cognitive health, but it is an adaptogen which balances cortisol and helps our bodies adapt to stress. It balances the activity of the adrenal glands and the thyroid. It further provides benefits to the immune system, improves memory, boosts stamina and alleviates anxiety. L-theanine. An amino acid found in green tea, L-theanine has been shown to be useful for both anxiety and memory. Randomized, controlled trials and cross-over studies have presented evidence that l-theanine is beneficial in reducing anxiety and in improving memory and attention. Furthermore, it decreases high levels of cortisol associated with stress. Tea. Safe and easy to take for children, adolescents and adults, teas are especially useful for people who are very sensitive when they

take medications or herbal medicine. Start off with one bag in a cup of water and then slowly increase it to as many as three bags until relief is felt. Some great teas which help ease anxiety and stress are lemon balm, passionflower, gotu kola and rose tea. Diet and exercise. Incorporating a healthy, nutrient-rich diet along with daily exercise is the foundation. It is important to take the time to quiet the brain through meditation, yoga, breathing exercises or even listening to relaxing music or a podcast. “Niksen” is an art practiced in the Dutch culture that simply involves nothing. It is the art of doing nothing. In our culture, it is highly underrated, but all humans need quiet down-time to de-stress. Laughter is another natural way to alleviate stress and release those feel-good hormones. A hearty laugh lowers blood pressure and is equivalent to 15 minutes of physical activity. I want to be coached in living a more well life.” According to master certified coach Fran Fisher, with 30 years of experience, “Life coaching is a safe environment or sacred space of unconditional love and acceptance where learning, growth and transformation naturally occur. Limiting Beliefs and Turtle Steps According to Beck, one of the most common issues a coach must address is their clients’ limiting beliefs. “It’s about freeing yourself from beliefs that are preventing you from moving forward or convincing you that you can’t have what you want, so you never try,” says Beck. “There’s something in your behavior that’s not allowing you to move forward. Let’s find the behavior, figure out why you’re doing it and change that belief. It’s good old-fashioned problem solving in partnership with the client.” Beck’s favorite tool for making changes is what she calls one-degree turns, or turtle steps, defined as the smallest steps you can take toward a goal. “Research shows that large steps tend to get discouraging,” she


notes. “We could do them at the beginning of a really passionate, goal-seeking time, but we almost never sustain it. If we go in tiny steps toward what we really believe and what we really want, we get there. The tortoise wins the race.”

Achieving Goals and Feeling Free

When it comes to setting and achieving goals, coaches have different approaches. Williams, for example, considers himself an accountability partner. “I won’t punish you if you don’t achieve your goals,” he says. “If you report progress, we celebrate and talk about what’s next. If you say, ‘I didn’t get it done,’ then we talk about what got in the way, what needs to change. We never make the client wrong. It’s what’s true for you.” For Beck, goals take a back seat. “My clients tend to give me goals that are culturally based on what they think they should do. People move forward much more rapidly when you don’t hold them to a goal. When they have permission to do whatever they want, they actually start doing the things that all the goal setting in the world won’t allow them to do. We have such a strong response to freedom. When we feel like we’re forcing ourselves to do something, we won’t do it because it’s not free. When we’re free, we do the things that are best for us.”

Part II: The V in Positive Psychology

ositive Psychology (PP) is the scientific study of optimal human functioning, its research encompassing neurobehavioral, cognitive behavioral and physiological science. The acronym used in PP is PERMA-V. We continue to explore V, or Vitality, an overriding factor that encourages and supports the success of Positivity, Engagement, Relationship, Meaning and Achievement/ Accomplishment in bringing about a deep sense of well-being. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the variation in time between each heartbeat. A higher HRV or significant variation in time between heartbeats is optimal, with a lower HRV being associated with anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s and cardiac disease. HRV reacts to negative emotional arousal such as acute time pressure anxiety, worry and stress. One can buy a device online to track personal HRV, many compatible with Apple and Android phones. Other ways to increase HRV include decreasing inflammation through diet, yoga, mindfulness and meditation to reduce stress; improving sleep hygiene (see below); and Box or Square Breathing—inhaling to a count of four, pausing for a count of four, exhaling for a count of four, and pausing for a count of four, repeating at least 10 times. Other helpful breathing exercises will be covered in next month’s offering. Some have found biofeedback training helpful for raising HRV. Tough workouts or strenuous competition can lower HRV. The body needs time to rest and recover. If HRV is low, it is wise to dial back on tough training until it is raised again. Establishing positive sleep hygiene is another key to vitality. When we are sleep deprived, we experience more stress, which raises the amount of cortisol, the “stress” hormone, in our bodies. Cortisol levels are also related to weight gain. Leptin is a hormone produced

by the fat cells in our bodies. It regulates fat storage and the number of calories we eat and burn. Ghrelin is another hormone that is produced in the gut. Its purpose is to get us to seek out food. Research suggests that leptin is decreased and ghrelin is increased in people who are sleep-deprived. When we create a sleep debt, we have to pay it back, or we are more likely to experience headaches, stomach discomfort, obesity, heart problems, colds or diabetes. People need 16 to 17 hours of being awake and then they require sleep for their bodies to restore homeostasis. There are different sleep types in terms of hours needed. Three kinds of sleepers include Larks (awake 5 to 6am and asleep by 9 to 10pm), Owls (awake 9 to 10am and asleep past midnight) and Humming Birds (awake 6:30 to 7:30am and asleep 10:30 to 11:30pm.) This may well be related to genetics unless is it associated with enforced work schedules. Sleep hygiene studies have shown that controlling behavioral and environmental factors before sleep can have a positive impact. It helps to establish a sleep schedule/habit for going to sleep and waking each day. Putting away electronics for 15 to 30 minutes before bed and winding down with a relaxing activity—hot bath, reading, journaling, cuddling or listening to music—is shown to be helpful. We want the body to associate our bedroom with sleep and sexual activity only, removing all visual media. Make darkness a priority through block-out shades and consider using a dawn simulator as an alarm clock. If unable to sleep after tossing and turning for 30 minutes, it is advisable to get up and get involved in a relaxing activity—yoga, music, non-caffeinated tea—and return to bed when sleepiness occurs. Martin Seligman, the founder of the positive psychology movement, suggests writing down “three good things—what went well, today, and how did I play a part?” Research has demonstrated a reduction in depression in subjects who participated in this exercise for 30 days. One can also engage in a progressive muscle relaxation exercise or a body scan, starting with the toes and working up through the entire body to the crown of the head, breathing slowly and easily, and at each point, placing attention on any areas of tension or discomfort. Try to transform language away from “pain” or “hurt” to “discomfort” or “un-

pleasant”. Words, alone, can trigger a stress fear reaction. We can discourage this when we change a word. If there is any area of discomfort, we can try to soften it by breathing gently into that area, then moving on to the next. It is surprising to learn the extent to which we carry our stress and worries in our legs. Over time, tightening those muscles brings about stiffness and other unpleasant sensations. Softening them whenever we can is beneficial. Another way to help encourage sleep and soften anxiety and stress is through the Emotional Freedom Technique, better known as EFT or “Tapping”. EFT combines cognitive restructuring and exposure techniques with acupoint stimulation, tapping with the fingers primarily on the face, with “reminder” statements to accompany the physical movements. This method was originated in the 1990s through the work of clinical psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan and later, Gary Craig, who used Callahan’s original work to further develop and name EFT. This method has now been studied across a wide range of populations and issues. Although it is not yet widely accepted by some western medicine practitioners, much evidence-based research is taking

place and over 100 clinical studies have found EFT to be a valid “evidence-based” practice for such conditions as anxiety and depression, phobias and PTSD. Anecdotally, many people have found EFT to be helpful before sleep, with some modifications. Because traditional tapping is quite active, one might want to just place the fingers softly at the tapping meridians and, as the late psychologist Patricia Carrington suggested in her form of EFT, replacing thoughts or statements such as “I want to go to sleep now” with “Even though I’m having trouble getting to sleep, I choose to feel pleasantly drowsy.” To find out more information about EFT, search online for “The EFT Manual” or the many other programs and videos about EFT or Tapping that are available. Minimize chemicals and medications

Overuse and misuse of chemicals and conventional medications can harm a dog’s body in numerous ways, including causing adverse effects on the immune system. Whenever a chemical product such as a flea preventive or conventional medication like a steroid or antibiotic is needed, we should ask two important questions. First, whether there is a safer, natural alternative to use—there usually is. Secondly,


what the lowest dose is to heal the patient. Usually, lower doses of many chemicals and medications can be used safely and effectively. Some doctors over-prescribe chemicals and medications because of incorrect diagnoses, a lack of knowledge of safer natural therapies and to increase their income.

3Feed a great diet

No matter what else is done to keep a dog healthy, it is critical to feed a good, natural diet, either homemade or purchased from a reputable company that specializes in healthy, natural foods. Many pet foods are full of unhealthy ingredients that may not be helpful for a dog’s immune system. Animal and plant byproducts, which typically are scrap from the food processing industry, provide little if any positive health benefits and may actually be harmful to a dog. Added chemicals, flavorings and colorings have no specific wellness attributes and may harm the dog’s DNA through oxidative damage, resulting in various immune problems such as cancers.

4Enable exercise

As with people, a sensible exercise program for a dog is important. It keeps the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems in great shape by mimicking the natural activities that a dog’s wild relatives experience every day. It also strengthens the immune system and builds and enhances the human-dog bond.

5Use supplements

Dogs that receive supplements every day tend to live longer, feel better and act happier. Even when they may have serious problems like cancer from which they may not recover, they are healthier, stronger and happier while battling the disease. Choline reduces symptoms in senior animals with cognitive disorder and reduces the chances in normal older animals of developing it. Its use is advisable for animals with liver disease or diabetes and for those with seizures. Chamomile and tryptophan reduce any type of anxiety or phobia.
