letter from publisher

I

’m generally an open-minded and non-judgmental person but, as anyone who knows me can attest, I can also be a bit stubborn. On occasion, I form an opinion and am hardheaded about holding onto it, even in the face of evidence to the contrary and even when I may be self-sabotaging. I know I’m not the only one who does this; it seems to be wired into our human DNA. With a bit of chagrin I acknowledge that one of the things I was close-minded about trying was acupuncture. I’m Nicole Miale not sure what my block was. I had no clear reason, no previous bad experience, nothing concrete to explain my resistance. I’d heard trusted people exclaim about its effects and thought, “Eh, good for them, not for me.” I saw it demonstrated, so I could see acupuncture was painless and seemed effective for the recipients. I had opportunities to experience it, but declined each time. While I may be stubborn, I am also capable of big shifts (another human trait, I think). So it was for me with acupuncture! I don’t recall the exact circumstances that led me to finally try it for the first time about 8 years ago. I do remember going in with great trepidation, and coming away from the session feeling lighter, calmer, and more relaxed. The pain I had been experiencing was eased, if not gone. That wonderful feeling of relief and peace has become much more familiar over the years as I’ve had many treatments since, for varied complaints. This ancient technique that I stubbornly refused to try for so long is now a mainstay of my personal self-care! It creates a state of feeling/being I truly appreciate and can highly recommend. Jampa Stewart has written a wonderful article this month about acupuncture and the other modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which offer relief and solutions to many of today’s health problems if we allow ourselves to step a bit out of the comfort zone. Our other topics this month echo this theme. We think we know what to expect from a trip to the dentist or our annual vision appointment. But what if what we’ve come to regard as normal is merely an old way of thinking that blocks us from feeling better, seeing better or even sleeping better? This month we offer inspiration to approach regular situations with new tools and techniques. There are a plethora of options to try and possibilities to entertain if we can admit our own tendency to hold stubborn resistance. I encourage you to try something new in your self-care routine this month. Why not? You might love it as much as I now love my acupuncture treatments! With love and light,

Weston-Based CBD-Infused Loose Leaf Tea

N

ot Your Granny’s Tea, an emerging specialty premium tea blender that officially launched in August 2018, has growing support from local followers. Not Your Granny’s Teas are distinct blends of minimally processed organic teas, flowers, herbs and premium farm-to-table CBD hemp flowers grown in the Pacific Northwest. For those unfamiliar with cannabidiol, or CBD, it is one of the many compounds found in the cannabis plant and has become increasingly popular for its myriad health benefits. CBD is not medical marijuana; unlike other compounds found in the plant, hemp-derived CBD is non-psychoactive—it will not make you high. “Not only do we use ingredients that you can identify— peek inside and you will find lavender flowers, ginger pieces, rolled green tea or fragrant Pu-erh tea—but they are sourced from farms that we feel good supporting,” says owner MK Lawson. A green tea comes from a woman-owned cooperative in Vietnam, the first-ever to attain UTZ certification for sustainable farming. The CBD comes from a family farm in Oregon; the entire farm closes when it’s harvest time. Not Your Granny’s Tea has garnered loyal and mostly local followers in Fairfield County, with 80 percent of orders from repeat customers, who originally discovered the product through local farm fairs, holiday markets or word-of-mouth. For more information, visit NotYourGrannys.com.

Soul Level Healing Training in Shelton

E

ilis Philpott of Soul Healing Journey, LLC will facilitate training in 13th Octave LaHoChi from June 20 to 23 in Shelton. 13th Octave LaHoChi is an ancient hands-on healing modality that conducts life/God force and infuses the individual with wholeness, balance and well-being. “La” means light and love of God. “Ho” means Eilis Philpott movement while “chi” refers to life force. The 13th Octave is a process of conscious union within the heart of God. When LaHoChi is joined with the energies of the 13th Octave, the squaring effect is comparable to a nuclear reaction. The result is accelerated healing, a calm mind and stimulation of spiritual awareness. 13th Octave LaHoChi is also used to accelerate personal growth, to reawaken a sense of joy and to increase an awareness of intuition. This training includes a combination of lecture, hands-on experiential instruction and discussion. Students will learn to how to be a conduit of the 13th Octave LaHoChi healing energies in order to relieve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual pain and blockages. There will be energy downloads through meditation and initiations as well as hands-on healing sessions. Upon completion, all receive certificates to practice 13th Octave LaHoChi. The knowledge and power of the LaHoChi was hidden following the fall of Atlantis and now is being resurrected by Lau Tzu, St. Germaine of the Violet Flame, Universal Mother Mary, Archangel Raphael and Albert Einstein and many other ascended masters. Because initiation into the 13th Octave is so transformative, there is no need for previous training in Reiki or other healing modalities. The workshop will take place June 20 to June 23. The cost is $555 per person, which includes all materials. A deposit of $200 is required to register. Payment plans are available. Philpott has been actively teaching the 13th Octave LaHoChi for the past three years and launched the Academy for Soul Healing in fall 2018. The academy supports the growth and expansion of humanity, individually and on a global scale. Upcoming 2019 trainings for the 13th Octave LaHoChi will take place in Connecticut, Virginia and Colorado. The primary program currently offered through the Academy is A Year of Healing; a 12-month training program intended to create a transformative healing/learning environment for all participants. It includes topics such as 13th Octave, 13th Octave LaHoChi, Veriscolor Flame LaHoChi, rebirthing, loving relationships, breathwork, ancestral healing, universal laws, protection, access bars, ethics of healing and more. The next session is enrolling now for a January 2020 start. Philpott has been a healing practitioner for 23 years. She is one of two teachers approved by Linda Dillon to teach the 13th Octave LaHoChi. She is a certified rebirther, Soul Language and Akashic Field Therapy practitioner and Reiki master. For more information, contact Eilis Philpott at 203-767-5954 or Eilis@SoulHealingJourney.com. A

natta—a new global online marketplace for essential oils and floral waters—has a unique business model: one that prioritizes purity, sustainability and social responsibility while allowing customers to meet and communicate directly with the farmers who grow the plants used in the products. The Manhattan-based company started operations in early 2019, with a business model designed to eliminate overhead costs incurred in standard supply chain models, connecting customers with farms to provide high-quality products at affordable prices. Founders Joshua Thomerson, Victoria Dantcheva and Oscar Bueno, three experienced executives in the essential oil industry, created a business plan that blends practical, innovative solutions and gives equal priority to ecological sustainability. “This new model makes feasible business sense, but we also felt very strongly about establishing a fair platform that invests in the future of farmers,’’ Thomerson says. “Sources are drastically shrinking, and we wanted to share our firsthand experience at these various corners of the world, where growing products is a way of life that needs to be nurtured.” Anatta pays farmers over 50 percent more than its competitors, he says. It also returns part of the proceeds from every purchase to partnership farmers to support their livelihoods. The company’s products are grown in Australia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, China, Somaliland, Rwanda and Tasmania. Among Anatta’s initial products are a variety of essential oils, such as Lavender, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Peppermint, Blue Chamomile, Fennel and Lemon Ironbark, as well as Rose and Lavender waters. Mental Fitness through Brain Optimization

K

ure Spa & Wellness Center will host Ava Diamond, psychotherapist, pro athlete, speaker and author, on June Ava Diamond 10, from 6:30 to 8:30pm, for a workshop on exercises, body movements and nutritional strategies that are easy to implement for brain optimization. People do more to protect their smartphones than their smart brains; we often operate as if on “Airplane Mode”. Brain optimization is about supplying your brain with a full charge and a solid “service” connection. High levels of cortisol cause you to lose memory, increase body fat, decrease your ability to focus and increase likelihood of experiencing illness and body aches. The workshop will teach a few 90-second mindset exercises that reduce cortisol levels, as well as how to eat in a way that nourishes healthy brain hormone production and reduces your “fight or flight” response. Kure Spa & Wellness Center provides a multifaceted approach to transforming people’s health and wellness naturally by providing naturopathic physician services and combining restorative, holistic and cutting-edge therapies in an exceptionally peaceful, nurturing and healing environment. For more information and tickets, call 203857-1500 or visit Eventbrite.com/e/ mental-fitness-through-brain-optimizationtickets-60630708080. Location: Kure Spa & Wellness Center, 430 Main Ave, second level, Norwalk.

Mindfulness Meditation at The Graduate Institute

K

im Ruggiero will facilitate mindfulness meditation groups at the Graduate Institute on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:45pm, and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8pm, at the Greene Art Gallery in Guilford. The topic-driven sessions include meditation as well as discussions related to mindfulness, such as neuroscience, consciousness, self-care, compassion training, adult development and transformation. Beginner and seasoned meditators are welcome. Twenty years ago, Kimberly Ruggiero gave up a career in the pharmaceuticals industry to embark on a deeper, more meaningful path. Ruggiero has a bachelor's of science in chemistry. She is currently a professional artist, coach, mindfulness teacher and program coordinator for integrative health and healing at the Graduate Institute, where she received her master’s degree in consciousness studies. The Graduate Institute is a state-accredited graduate school dedicated to promoting an integrative and holistic worldview through the study of health, wellness, education, and personal and professional transformation. To register for Mindful Meditation, call 203-710-5502 or email Ruggiero@learn.edu. For more information on The Graduate Institute, visit Learn.edu. Location: 171 Amity Rd, Bethany. See ad, page 39.

Mold Matters Kill It Naturally

Heavy rains, leaky pipes and floods can lead to mold growth, which can create poor and even toxic indoor air quality. Irritating the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs of both moldsensitive and non-allergic people, mold can also cause immediate or delayed respiratory symptoms; some can be extremely severe in individuals prone to asthma. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that people with a weakened immune system are at higher risk of health effects from mold, which can also instigate a chronic cough. Toxic reactions can include pulmonary hemorrhaging in infants and memory loss in young children. A roof leak, burst pipe or malfunctioning water heater can all set the stage for mold to take root, sometimes hidden behind walls and cabinetry. Even in homes

that haven’t been damaged by excessive water, mold can be found wherever humidity levels are high, including basements, garages and showers. Proper ventilation and repair of leaky fixtures can help keep mold growth at bay. According to the CDC, mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with soap and water. Natural antimicrobials such as plain white vinegar and baking soda are also powerful cleansers; tea tree oil is a natural, antibacterial and antiseptic fungicide that can kill black mold on impermeable surfaces. Remediation of extensive mold growth on drywall and other permeable building materials is best left to professionals to arrest its spread and prevent toxic spores from becoming airborne. There are many companies that use eco-friendly “green” methods and materials. If choosing to go the DIY route, sequester the area to be worked on and use specialized HEPA filters and a respirator to avoid inhaling spores. Use protective goggles and gloves throughout the entire process. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggests that surface sampling may be useful to determine if an area has been adequately cleaned or remediated. Sampling for mold should be conducted by professionals that have specific experience in designing mold sampling protocols, sampling methods and interpreting results.

Eat More Carbs to Lower Heart Risk

Exercise Improves Young Brains, Too Walking, cycling, climbing stairs and other aerobic activities may improve brain function not only in older people, but also in younger folk, according to a Columbia University study published in Neurology. The study recruited 132 people between 20 and 67 years old that didn’t exercise and had below-average fitness levels. Half stretched and toned four times a week for six months and half exercised aerobically on a treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical machine. When they were evaluated for their executive function thinking skills—regulating behavior, paying attention and achieving goals—the aerobics group improved twice as much as the stretching group. “The people who exercised were testing as if they were about 10 years younger at age 40 and about 20 years younger at age 60,” says study author Yaakov Stern, Ph.D.

For those that don’t move vigorously throughout the day—whether stuck behind a desk or lying on a couch in front of a screen— there’s good news in a recent American Cancer Society study. Replacing just 30 minutes a day of stationary time with such moderate physical activities as brisk walking and dancing reduces the risk of dying over 14 years by a whopping 45 percent. Even light activities such as walking slowly, playing pool and doing housework like vacuuming for half an hour reduce mortality risk by 15 percent.

Take Magnesium to Optimize Vitamin D Magnesium seems to optimize vitamin D, increasing the vitamin’s utilization for those with insufficient levels and decreasing it in those with excessive amounts. In a randomized trial of 250 people between ages 50 and 85 that were considered at risk for colorectal cancer, researchers at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center found that changes in blood levels of vitamin D were significantly affected by the intake of magnesium—a mineral in which 80 percent of Americans are deficient. In addition to supplements, magnesium-rich foods include dark leafy greens, beans, whole grains, dark chocolate, nuts, avocados and fatty fish such as salmon.

Regardless of the type of protein consumed, low-carb diets significantly increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib), according to a study presented at the latest annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology. Analyzing the records of almost 14,000 people over a 20-year period, researchers found that diets such as Atkins, ketogenic and paleo, which emphasize protein instead of fruits, vegetables and grains, boosted the risk of AFib by 18 percent compared to diets with moderate carb intake. Researchers theorize that consuming less produce and fewer grains may aggravate inflammation, while eating high amounts of protein and fat may increase oxidative stress. Both conditions are linked to AFib, in which the heart beats irregularly, potentially causing palpitations, dizziness and fatigue. It’s also linked to a five-fold increase in strokes.

Search Engine Company Plants Trees

Internet users can help fight global deforestation even while surfing. German online search engine Ecosia, now used in 183 countries, diverts its advertising revenue from click-throughs to planting trees worldwide to the tune of more than 52 million since 2009. With each search, the company says, it removes around two-and-a-half pounds of carbon dioxide from the air. Christian Kroll, Ecosia’s founder, wrote, “Climate change is a very real threat, and if we’re to stop the world heating above the 1.5 degrees warned about in the IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report, we need to plant trees at scale.” Kroll suggests that if Ecosia were to get as big as Google, they could absorb 15 percent of all global carbon dioxide emissions. Users can find it at Ecosia.org.

With the world facing a future of climate change and water scarcity, finding an environmental way to cleanse drinking water is paramount. Researchers in China contend they are working on a method to remove bacteria from water that’s both highly efficient and environmentally sound. By shining ultraviolet light onto a twodimensional sheet of graphitic carbon nitride, the team’s prototype can purify two-and-a-half gallons of water in one hour, killing virtually all the harmful bacteria present. This technique of photocatalytic disinfection is an alternative to current eco-unfriendly water filtration systems such as chlorination or ozone disinfection.

Revamping Recycling

China Forces U.S. Cities to Change Specs

China, one of the world’s main importers of recyclable waste, is rejecting shipments that are more than 0.5 percent impure, so loads contaminated by a greasy pizza box, disposable coffee cups and the odd plastic bag could end up in the local landfill instead. Most single-use cups, for instance, are lined with a fine film of polyethylene, which makes the cups liquid-proof, but also difficult and expensive to reprocess. Most waste management facilities will treat the cups as trash. Since China banned impure plastics, many U.S. municipalities no longer accept plastics numbered 3 to 7, which can include yogurt cups, butter tubs and vegetable oil bottles. Another contamination culprit is food residue. Washing out food scraps from recyclables can be just as important as putting the appropriate item in the recycling bin.

ou need your sleep! Not getting proper sleep impairs your immune system, is implicated in your being more sensitive to pain and is often an underlying cause of depression. What are some of the things that may prevent you or your child from getting a proper night’s sleep? Activating your brain before bedtime by working on your computer or smartphone can delay the onset of sleep. Sleeping in a room not dark or quiet enough is another problem. One of the hugely overlooked causes of improper sleep is a sleep breathing disorder (SBD). This is a situation where you are not getting enough oxygen, which causes conscious or unconscious arousals from sleep that disrupt your natural sleep cycles. SBD affects both children and adults and numerous studies link SBD to ADD/ ADHD, chronic fatigue, bedwetting, aggression, depression, restless sleep and more.

How do you know if you suffer from a sleep breathing disorder?

In addition to the above symptoms, a few vital signs are: waking up not feeling 24

refreshed; breathing too loudly while sleeping; grinding or clenching your teeth; or waking up with a headache. Most often, the biggest contributor to SBD is the tongue being too far back in the throat, thereby narrowing the air passage. One of the possible treatments is to use a sleep appliance that pulls the tongue forward. The usual reason that the tongue is back in the throat is that the mouth is too small for the tongue. This restriction of space is due to jaws that are underdeveloped and thus too small both in width and in a front to back direction. Also, the bite is usually over-closed (the chin is too close to the nose). The abnormal jaw relationship often causes temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). In fact, the association between TMD and SBD is found to be extremely common. The lack of proper jaw development starts as a child, often due to extended bottle feeding, pacifier use and poor nutrition. Some other factors are heredity, finger sucking and tongue tie. Tongue tie refers to the band of tissue that tethers the tongue to the floor of the mouth. When

the band is so tight that you cannot touch the roof of your mouth with your tongue when your mouth is wide open, you are tongue-tied. The tongue is a unique orthodontic instrument and helps develop the roof of your mouth and the width of your jaws. When you are tongue-tied, proper jaw development doesn’t occur, and the problems start.

What to look for in your child

Anything that indicates a lack of space for the tongue is a warning sign that there may be a problem, especially if the symptoms listed above are present. Other important warning signs include: bedwetting, chronic allergies, difficulty in school, nightmares, mouth breathing, daytime drowsiness, snoring, aggression, restless sleep, grinding teeth, talking in sleep, sleep walking, frequent headaches, speech problems and excessive sweating while asleep. Parents should look for: crowding of the baby or permanent teeth; the lower jaw is too far back compared to the upper jaw; and when closed the upper front teeth cover all or most of the lower front teeth. Breathing while sleeping should be very quiet; if it isn’t, this may indicate a problem. Grinding of the teeth in a child will almost always be due to worms

or to an SBD problem. If your child has enlarged tonsils, it impinges on the airway and also retards midfacial development. Dry lips due to chronic mouth breathing are another warning sign. Nine out of 10 children exhibit one or more of the above symptoms. If there is a problem, depending on the severity, various treatments are available. However, ultimately the underlying lack of jaw space will need to be addressed by expanding the jaws to allow the tongue to come forward out of the airway. With this goal in mind, the right dentist will offer orthopedic/orthodontic treatment to correct the problem. It is best to begin treatment as early as possible.

Warning signs in adults

If the abnormal jaw development remains uncorrected in childhood, problems will persist and may even become worse as an adult. The SBD may become critical enough that diseases associated with sleep apnea may manifest. These include hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and acid reflux. In the mouth, look for gum recession, abfraction (ditching of the tooth at the gum line), tongue tie, teeth fracturing and tooth imprints on the sides of the tongue.

When you close your mouth, do your upper front teeth close over your bottom front teeth so that you cannot see all or most of your lower front teeth? Are your teeth crowded? Do you grind or clench your teeth? Do you notice popping, clicking or noises in the jaw joint in front of your ears? All of these are potential signs of trouble. If it seems that there is an SBD problem, you may be able to do a Home Sleep Test, and a medical sleep specialist will evaluate the data. Depending on the findings, there are different options, including referral to a medical sleep specialist for a C-PAP machine, fabricating a sleep appliance or correcting the problem orthopedically/orthodontically. Of course, as a preventative measure, the best time to start treatment is during childhood to allow for proper development of the jaws and adequate room for the tongue. Mark A. WHY BIOLOGIC DENTISTRY?

It’s Not Just About Teeth by Michelle Bense

A

ccording to Dr. Andrew Weil, holistic dentists typically subscribe to the same basic principles of oral health care as conventional dentists, though each may have other specialties or methods. Generally, the holistic dentist will: focus on how whole-body health is linked to the health of our gums and teeth, use safer materials for fillings (no mercury/metals), avoid root canals as a treatment and use the least invasive means of total wellness. Dr. Leonard Kundel, DMD, a holistic dentist with a private practice in Stamford, believes strongly that “your mouth is connected to your body and so it should be treated as such”. He is about educating the patient, first and foremost. “As a holistic dentist, I just want my patients to be well. If you come to me, I tell you that whatever comes out of my mouth always has your best interest in mind.” 26

All About the Airway

Humans have basic needs for survival: sleep and breathing. “If those two basic needs are not met well, the body and mind cannot be healthy,” Kundel says. “When people with all sorts of illnesses come to me, I listen to them. Once they tell me their story, I ask them, ‘How well do you sleep?’ All of them say, ‘terribly’. What I find is that practically all people who come to me that suffer from various illnesses have not enjoyed restorative quality sleep for a very long time.” Most patients report struggling with sleep, and much of that could be due to airway obstructions—in adults and children. According to Stanford Children’s Health, in children the most common cause of obstructive sleep apnea—ceasing breathing during periods of sleep—is enlarged tonsils and adenoids.

Fairfield County/Housatonic Valley Edition

eNaturalAwakenings.com

While he always seeks the most gentle, least invasive option first, sometimes surgical intervention—in many cases removing the tonsils—is necessary to achieve the most optimal outcome. Kundel suggests to his patients that they should try the gentle solution first. “I tell them to try it for six months. If it’s not working after six months, it’s not going to, and we have to be realistic about options and do something else. You have to act into health,” he says. Patients should weigh the options and get the advice of a trusted, experienced professional who has their best interests at heart. The focus at Kundel’s practice is working together with other health practitioners to help the patients. This includes pulmonologists, sleep specialists, ENTs, pediatricians, osteopaths, lactation consultants, myofunctional specialists, NDs and other practitioners—a true whole-body approach. Kundel says he looks at things in shades of gray. Where other dentists may be firm in a belief that the greatest enemy to oral health is mercury or a root canal, he looks for other clues as well. “As a holistic dentist who started almost 20 years ago, it was always about mercury. What I find now is that paying attention to the airway of the patient is far more important than what type of filling they have.”

The Root of It

A hallmark of holistic dentistry has been the belief that root canals are not the answer. Weil explains that “common dental procedures such as gum cleanings and root canals can force bacteria into the bloodstream.” This can lead to bigger problems down the road that have consequences reaching far beyond the mouth. Many holistic dentists advise patients who have had root canals to have them removed for good measure. However, Kundel says, it is important to remember that these warnings are not all-encompassing. Some patients are going to dentists after reading and watching documentaries like the recent Root Cause,

requesting the removal of their root canals. “People with all different health issues are getting teeth pulled. They come to me from great distances, saying they’ve had all these issues and they’ve had a couple of root canals, so they want them removed,” says Kundel.

The best doctor is one who is looking at every aspect of the mouth and head, asking the right questions and educating the patient on all available and recommended options. “What do you think I ask?” quizzes Kundel. “I ask them, ‘How well are you sleeping?’ They always say they’ve been terrible sleepers their whole life. They learn about the problems of root canals so they assume that’s their main issue,

but it may not be—they may have other underlying issues.” The best doctor is one who is looking at every aspect of the mouth and head, asking the right questions and educating the patient on all available and recommended options. “It is profound that we’ve not really talked about teeth,” he laughs. “But the jaw and airway have a much bigger impact on health than teeth. We need to make sure teeth are healthy, educate patients to take care of them and avoid infections, but there is much more to the mouth than just teeth.”

Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children. ~Charles R. Swindoll

THE NEW ANCIENT MEDICINE Rediscovering Traditional Chinese Medicine

H

by Jampa Mackenzie Stewart

ave you tried acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) yet? Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been used as the major modalities of healthcare in China for over 5,000 years. Over the last 45 years or so, TCM has become increasingly popular around the world. It first attracted attention in America in July of 1971 when James Reston, a news-

paper columnist for The New York Times, had to have an emergency appendectomy in a Beijing hospital while traveling as part of the press corps on President Richard Nixon’s historic visit to China. The operation was successful, but Reston suffered considerable post-surgical discomfort as a result of the surgery. While still recovering in the hospital, he was treated with acupuncture, and the pain went away

within an hour and never recurred. Reston subsequently wrote an article about his experience for the newspaper. His article caused quite a stir in the American medical community, prompting follow-up visits to China by teams of U.S. physicians on fact-finding missions to assess the effectiveness of acupuncture, particularly its uses for surgical anesthesia and analgesia. They observed acupuncture being used as the sole form of anesthesia for both brain surgery and a thyroidectomy. In both surgeries, the patients were conscious throughout, and the operations were successful. As a result of their findings, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) began to issue grants for the study of acupuncture and its effectiveness. They concluded that acupuncture is effective for treating such conditions as low back pain, headaches and migraines, neck pain, knee pain, allergies and morning sickness. In their Consensus on Acupuncture, the NIH has stated, “There is sufficient evidence of acupuncture’s value to expand its use into conventional medicine.” In 1996, the World Health Organization listed 64 conditions that were considered to be treated effectively by acupuncture, including: sciatica, tennis elbow, peri-arthritis of the shoulder, sprains, facial pain, TMJ, dental pain, acute and chronic gastritis, rheumatoid arthritis, induction of labor, breech birth presentation, morning sickness, nausea and vomiting, postoperative pain, stroke, essential hypertension, primary hypotension, renal colic, leucopenia, radiation/

chemo reactions, allergic rhinitis, hay fever, biliary colic, depression, acute bacillary dysentery, primary dysmenorrhea, acute epigastralgia, drug addiction and peptic ulcer. According to the Connecticut Society of Acupuncturists, there have been over 25,000 research projects worldwide on acupuncture to date. It is clear that acupuncture is an evidence-based medical modality and not mere superstition as some have suggested. The fact that veterinarians have used it for decades to great positive effect with horses, dogs and cats would seem to rule out the theory that acupuncture’s results are based solely on the placebo effect. Current modern research cited by Acupuncture Media Works further adds to the list of conditions for which acupuncture is of benefit: in vitro fertilization, insomnia, fibromyalgia, women’s reproductive health, irritable bowel syndrome, pain relief for cancer patients, asthma, wrist and ankle pain, osteoarthritis, allergic rhinitis, Type 2 diabetes and induction of labor.

Advantages of Acupuncture

Acupuncture’s safety, low cost and the fact that it is non-addictive make it of particular relevance in today’s approaches to chronic pain treatment and addiction therapy. As anyone paying attention to the news these days knows, we are in the midst of a national opioid epidemic of crisis proportions. Sales of prescription opioids have quadrupled since 1999. More than 70,000 people died from prescription opioid overdoses in 2017, and that number is rising, not to mention heroin overdoses. There are also over 80,000 NSAID and acetaminophen related emergency room visits annually. There are four major advantages for using acupuncture to treat drug addiction and for pain management. First, acupuncture therapy for opioid addiction is inexpensive, easy and has no side effects. Second, acupuncture can be used to help break the addiction and mitigate withdrawal symptoms. Third, acupuncture therapy is safe for pregnant women.

Fourth, acupuncture can treat the pain that started the opioid dependence in the first place. Ear acupuncture is the most common form of acupuncture treatment for substance addiction, including opioids, cocaine, crack and even alcohol in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom. This protocol for addiction was developed in 1985 by the head of the U.S. National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA), Dr. Michael Smith. In both countries, there are currently over 250 hospitals using acupuncture therapy based on the NADA protocol. The needles we use for acupuncture today are hair thin, and contrary to what people may assume, treatments are usually painless. Among other factors, acupuncture has been found to stimulate the release of endorphins, our body’s natural painkillers, which typically also induce a sense of deep relaxation. It also affects the release of serotonin and dopamine to improve emotional well-being.

Beyond Acupuncture: Other TCM Modalities

Other modalities typically used by acupuncturists on patients include acupressure, cupping, moxibustion and other types of heat therapy, Chinese medical

massage, medical qigong and nutritional counseling. In addition to these modalities, Chinese herbal medicine is often prescribed either in conjunction with acupuncture or as a standalone treatment therapy. Chinese herbal formulas usually contain four or more herbs, which might include leaves, twigs, bark, seeds, fruit, berries or roots. They may also include animal or insect ingredients or minerals. Chinese herbal formulas can be as effective, or in some cases even more effective than Western pharmaceuticals. For example, if one herb might address the major concern of a patient but could have some unwanted side effects, such as digestive upset, another herb that eliminates digestive upset is added to the formula to mitigate the problem. It should be noted that Chinese herbal medicine should not be considered “alternative medicine”. Herbal medicine has been primary care in both China and the West for thousands of years. Until 100 years ago, if you went to a pharmacy in the U.S., you would likely be given an herbal prescription or a medicine derived from herbal ingredients. Many of our present day pharmaceutical drugs are based on plant medicine. For example, aspirin was developed from willow bark, which is still used for pain. Digitalis, digitalin and

digoxin, derived from the foxglove plant, are used to treat atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure. Chinese herbal medicine formulas are available in many forms. They may be composed of the actual dried herbs which are cooked up as medicinal teas, or they may be available in freeze-dried powders, capsules, tinctures or tablets. There are also topical oils, liniments, balms, lotions and ointments for skin care, burns, pain and rashes. They are generally quite affordable. Many health insurance plans in Connecticut now provide coverage for acupuncture services. Check with your insurance company to see if your plan includes acupuncture benefits. Most insurance plans do not cover herbal medicines. Acupuncture and other branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine are becoming more and more accepted and integrated into mainstream American healthcare every year. Many hospitals and medical clinics across the country now have acupuncturists on staff. If you do decide to receive acupuncture, make sure you go to a licensed acupuncturist. While other health practitioners such as physicians, chiropractors, naturopaths and physical therapists may practice acupuncture, licensed acupuncturists receive over 1,400 hours of specific acupuncture training and more than 3,000 hours to be nationally board certified; other professions may receive as little as 15 to 300 hours of training. Before you decide if acupuncture works for you, make sure you first have had treatments from those most qualified. Jampa Mackenzie Stewart, MSOM, is a board certified acupuncturist licensed in Connecticut and Texas. He has been in practice for 25 years, and has served as a professor at Southwest Acupuncture College and Dean of Clinical Studies at AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine. Five Organs’ Emotional Ties by Janice Messino

A

ccording to Traditional Chinese Medicine, everything is energy. “Everything that makes up a human being, mind-body-spirit, correlates at an energetic level to something ‘external’ in nature. We can use the vibrational frequency of nature and these principles of natural law to heal and balance our bodies and emotions,” says the Traditional Chinese Medicine World Foundation. This energy includes the five primary organs—the heart, kidneys, liver, spleen/ stomach and the lungs—which are an important foundation of Chinese medicine. These organs carry out the essential roles of creation, conversion and direction of the blood and qi (energy). They distribute the qi throughout the body via a refined network of channels. Emotions are said to relate with the following corresponding bodily organs: anger with the liver, happiness with the heart, thoughtfulness with the heart and spleen, fear with the heart and kidneys, surprise

with the heart and gallbladder, and anxiety and sadness with the heart and lungs. Each organ also relates to a season, a taste and an earth element.

The Heart

In the system of ancient Chinese medicine, the five organs operate essentially in mutual dependency, but the heart still retains the prime position as the leader. The season of the heart is summer. The color of blood is another sign of the spirit of the heat of summer. In Chinese medicine, the heart houses the mind, and because of this, emotions particularly affect the heart. Summer is a time of expansion; days are long, and joy (and sometimes overstimulation) comes from the heart. The heart doesn’t like heat, whether it is internal (overexcitement) or external (hot weather). Too much heat expressed as anger or having repressed anger

will damage the heart and spirit. Health awareness involving the heart includes heart palpitations, chest pain, mental confusion and anxiety related to stress. There are physical and emotional changes we can make to protect from possible concerns, such as engaging in activities including: laughter, listening to calming music, meditation with a focus on slow and deep breaths and smiling more. Another thing you can do is to place your hands one on top of the other over your chest area. Make a connection with your heart. Feel it beating. Make small circular motions three times in each direction. Excess heat within the body can be caused by an unbalanced diet, especially too much alcohol, spicy or fried foods. Bitter is the flavor that corresponds to the heart. Bitter foods clear excessive heat. You can support your heart function through diet by including dark leafy greens, parsley and cooling foods like cucumber and watermelon.

The Kidneys

Kidneys store our essence—the most refined substance of our material body. This governs the aspects of reproduction, growth and development. It is said that we inherit part of our essence (pre-birth qi) from our parents. Fear is the emotion associated with the kidney. If you have panic attacks or anxiety, the body may be expressing that kidney energy is low or imbalanced. Other issues related to the kidney include fertility, PMS, menopause problems, low back and knee pain, low energy with declining vitality and other aging issues. To strengthen the kidneys, avoid stress and meditate. According to the National Institutes of Health, the practices of qigong and tai chi can help lower back and knee pain. The taste that relates to the kidneys is salty. Foods that strengthen the kidneys include: bone broth; briny seafood; black colored foods such as black beans, dark colored mushrooms, seaweed and miso; and warm food like soup. There is an acupressure point which stimulates a key point on the kidney chanJune 2019

It may be sore when you massage it purposefully, but this means you’re hitting the right spot to stimulate your body’s energy foundation, which will help to relieve symptoms such as night sweats, hot flashes, hypertension, insomnia, anxiety and headaches. The location is at the exact center of the bottom of each foot. Starting with your left foot, massage this point decisively using your thumb or even a tennis ball. The season associated with the kidney is winter.

The Liver

Liver is the energy of spring. The energy of the liver spreads out and rises upward to the head, which diffuses and ensures the smooth flow of qi throughout our body, allowing us to store the qi. The liver is the detoxifier for the body. When the liver is disordered, this will cause emotional symptoms. When the qi rises to the head, it can create strong emotions like anger, irritation, headaches, high blood pressure, dizziness, insomnia and poor digestion. The flavor for the liver is sour. Suggestions to clear the liver include dark vinegar to unblock liver qi, and any sour foods such as lemon, dandelions, green and peppermint tea. To promote a healthy liver, try laughter, social interaction and going for slow walks—especially in nature. In contrast to our kidneys’ pre-birth essence, the spleen and stomach are the “root of later heaven”, because of the ability to affect one’s health destiny after birth. The spleen/stomach controls digestion by the transformation of food, by converting food to energy. The spleen/stomach is the cornerstone to our health via thinking and intellect. It is of the earth element and controls digestion. If the spleen/stomach is sluggish, results can be poor memory, poor digestion and food sensitivities. To create a happier spleen, avoid overthinking and worry. To strengthen the spleen/stomach, avoid simple carbohydrates and eat more naturally sweet, yellow and orange foods, such as carrots, whole grains, bananas, yellow squash and raw or cooked fruit. After balancing the spleen there is often less craving of sweets. Acupressure for stomach health starts just below your navel and up to the breastbone. Massage this area gently by placing one hand on top of the other and slowly making five clockwise circles. Reverse direction and make five more circles. You will find this also removes a buildup of gas, speeds digestion and helps with nausea.

The lungs are the place where the body holds despair, and as with any other organ, the energy it holds can be a reason for illness. The lungs house the immune system and are the first

defense of the body. They fight pathogens when they enter the body, govern the qi by virtue of the breath and give circulation and movement to the qi. The close association of qi and breath explains why rhythmic breathing is so beneficial to the lungs. When the lungs are not functioning properly, there is often found depression, low energy and respiratory illnesses. The season of the lungs is autumn. If you tend to catch respiratory illness, it is especially important to take care of this organ. Foods for the lungs involve pungent foods such as garlic, ginger, green onions and button mushrooms. To keep lungs healthy, spend time with friends and family, practice slow rhythmic breathing and learn to let go of emotional and physical things you no longer need. Stretch by raising one hand, palm facing the sky with the other to the earth; stretch as well as is comfortable and hold. Reverse, and do this slowly nine times. This not only strengthens lung energy, but also increases your overall energy levels, giving you extra qi for healing and living. A CONVERSATION WITH

D

Randy Schulman of Eyecare Associates

r. Randy Schulman, MS, OD, FCOVD, principal of Eyecare Associates with four locations in Fairfield County, has been a leader in the holistic health field in this area for more than 24 years. An early fascination with optometry led her to study that as a medical specialty and became a path to iridology and alternative optometric techniques that have served her many patients well over the years. Natural Awakenings recently spoke with Schulman about her journey and experiences.

What led you to optometry as a profession?

I always wanted to be a doctor since I was 5 years old. As a teen I worked for a few different doctors to determine which one I wanted to be. I worked for an orthodontist, gynecologist/surgeon and an optometrist. I was fascinated with optometry and knew at 15 years of age that I would

go to optometry school after college.

How did you first discover your passion for vision?

When I was working for a behavioral optometrist I saw kids that were all over the place, making noises and not engaged come for vision therapy and then 10 weeks later say, “Hi Randy,” calmly and able to walk down the hallway without touching everything. That had a big impact on me.

When did you begin to understand the implications of vision health for overall wellness?

During optometry school my dad gave me a book on iridology that I put aside for 10 years. Cleaning out my office, I found it and started studying it. I subsequently began studying a number of different systems of iridology and began incorporating it into my practice. It gave me a tool into

the health and wellness of the entire body, learning styles, and the gifts and challenges of the individual.

What gets you most excited about the work you do?

I am most excited by the work we are doing using optometric testing, iridology and bioenergetic testing to optimize treatment modalities and make recommendations for improving health and wellness, optimizing learning, enhancing energy, balancing emotions and increasing cognitive function.

Which elements of the work frustrate you?

What is most frustrating is the lack of awareness in the general community about the efficacy of alternative treatments. Many of the treatments I use, specifically the optometric photo therapy and vision therapy are very well researched and proven effective and/or more effective than traditional treatments. What is worse, these treatments are denounced in the United States yet used as a first course in Europe.

When you began to create various locations, what was your vision for the work that would happen there and the practitioners who would join you?

I really did not have an intention to create larger centers or multiple locations. My intention was to expand awareness and accessibility of behavioral and integrative vision care. In Connecticut alone there

were 12 optometrists that did this work and either passed or retired without passing on their practices. Those practices all closed or stopped providing vision therapy or the kind of care that I learned from some of them after graduating optometry school. I am committed to teaching and training other doctors so that we will have at least as many practices offering advanced optometric care. I had one practice in Norwalk that I began in 1995 and then opened a second one in Trumbull in 2003. In 2013, Dr. Gruning, a professor of mine from optometry school and the original optometrist I worked for as a teen, wanted to retire and there was no one to take over his practice. Rather than having the practice stop providing vision therapy, I took over. Then in 2017, another early employer and supervisor from optometry school asked if I would take on his practice as well. I now offer internships from six different optometry schools and recently acquired a residency program through SUNY Optometry. We are the only private practice optometry site of the 40 plus residency sites for SUNY.

What is your vision for the next five years? Where do you want to go?

I am committed to training and teaching young doctors to work with us and open practices of their own. So far, four other doctors have gone on to open vision therapy practices of their own. We are welcoming three new doctors, two former interns and a SUNY resident graduate. Two of our doctors are moving on to begin work with retiring doctors in upstate New York and Michigan this summer. I want to continue to train doctors on the behavioral, rehabilitative and integrative model of vision and expand our reach to patients that we can help through community engagement, education and communication. I personally would like to spend more time working in a multi-disciplinary manner, lecturing and writing on vision rehabilitation in the brain injured population, developmental delays, iridology and integrative optometry.

ne of the best ways to protect and preserve our precious eyesight is to focus on food. In general, the same plant-based, antioxidant-rich diets that defend against heart disease and cancer also contribute to eye health by reducing the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration—the two most common age-related causes of vision loss. However, two specific nutrients— lutein and zeaxanthin—deserve special attention. These compounds uniquely concentrate in the macula, the centrally located part of the retina responsible for visual acuity, and are most vulnerable to oxidative damage from light exposure. Both are members of the carotenoid family, a large group of powerful antioxidant nutrients found mostly in fruits and vegetables, especially those with dark green, deep yellow, red and orange pigments. According to the National Eye Institute and the American Optometric Association, lutein and zeaxanthin help absorb damaging ultraviolet light from the sun, as well as blue light from computer screens, digital devices and LEDs.

“Think of lutein as a sort of sunblock,” says Elizabeth Johnson, research associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition and Science Policy at Tufts University, in Boston. Speaking at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual meeting in Washington, D.C., last fall, Johnson described the yellow macular pigments— lutein and zeaxanthin—as “internal sunglasses” that protect the eyes’ photoreceptor cells. “Yellow pigment absorbs blue light,” Johnson explains. The greater our macular pigment density, the more protection we have against light damage, and the better our visual function. As a bonus, macular pigment density also aligns with improved academic performance and cognitive function across our lifespan, reports Naiman Khan, Ph.D., a registered dietitian and director at the Body Composition and Nutritional Neuroscience Lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Because lutein is actively transported into breast milk, Johnson suspects the compound is important to infant eye and brain health. Despite solid scientific evidence con-

firming the benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin, there is no official recommended daily allowance. Johnson explains that Americans typically consume less than two milligrams per day, falling short of levels needed to enhance visual and brain function and slow the progression of age-related eye diseases. Her advice: Eat foods that provide between six to 10 milligrams of lutein and two milligrams of zeaxanthin each day. Dark green leafy vegetables, including kale, spinach and collard greens, provide the highest amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin, especially when cooked. For example, one cup of cooked kale or spinach delivers more than 20 milligrams of lutein and zeaxanthin, whereas one cup of raw spinach contains just under four milligrams. Johnson explains that cooking breaks down plant cell walls, making the carotenoids more bio-available. Plus, because lutein and zeaxanthin are fat-soluble, lower amounts found in avocadoes (0.4 milligrams in one medium fruit) are better absorbed. Further, simply adding an avocado or oil-based dressing to raw, dark leafy green salads will increase intestinal absorption. The same is true for egg yolks (0.2 milligrams per large egg). In a study of 33 older adults, published in The Journal of Nutrition, researchers found that consumption of one egg a day for five weeks significantly increased blood levels of lutein and zeaxanthin without raising cholesterol levels. According to the National Eye Institute and their Age-Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS), additional nutrients that benefit eye health include vitamins C and E, and omega-3 fatty acids. When it comes to eating for eye health, here’s some more insightful advice:

1

Eat the “rainbow”. Choose a variety of colorful, organic fruits and vegetables daily; they are rich in eye-protecting carotenoids, flavonoids and vitamin C. Whole grains, nuts and seeds provide vitamin E, and fatty, cold-water fish such as sardines, salmon, tuna and mackerel are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Vegan sources of omega-3s include walnuts, ground flax, hemp and chia seeds, or microalgae supplements.

‘CHASING LIFE’

by Jan Hollingsworth

uring nearly two decades with CNN, Dr. Sanjay Gupta has covered wars, natural disasters and the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Along the way, the Western-trained, practicing neurosurgeon has explored myriad health topics, including the science of alternative medicine and the benefits of medical cannabis, the subject of his CNN docuseries, Weed. He’s written three books: Chasing Life: New Discoveries in the Search for Immortality to Help You Age Less Today, Cheating Death: The Doctors and Medical Miracles that Are Saving Lives Against All Odds and a novel-turned-TV series,

Monday Mornings. CNN’s chief medical correspondent recently found himself in Japan, soaking in a scalding bath—a form of stress relief practiced there—along with owl cafés and forest bathing. The visit was part of a six-country, immersive journey in some of the happiest and healthiest places on Earth—including India, Bolivia, Norway, Italy and Turkey—to explore ancient traditions and modern practices that lead to a healthy and meaningful life. The result: Chasing Life, a new docuseries that aired in April and May, is now available on demand via cable/satellite systems, the CNNgo streaming platform and CNN mobile apps.

On a very basic level, a lot of people are surprised to hear that U.S. life expectancy has dropped three years in a row and the cost of health care is more than $3.5 trillion a year. Yet there are places around the world where people are living happier, healthier lives for a lot less, and longer. They must be doing something that’s beneficial, and we wanted to find out what that might be: What do places around the world have to teach us?

To what do you attribute the reemergence of traditional Indian healing practices?

Ayurvedic medicine is widely practiced in India among the healthiest people in that part of the world. It’s stood the test of time, so it’s worth exploring. In the U.S., we have an amazing medical system for people who are sick, but they aren’t doing as well as expected [which is why] there’s an open-mindedness that’s happening about one of the oldest medical traditions.

What role might ancient traditions play in reshaping 21st-century health care? If you look at chronic disease in the U.S.,

one could make the argument that 70 to 80 percent of it is entirely preventable—most of it related to our food. When you look at the Ayurvedic diet, how does a culture come up with a way of eating going back thousands of years? In the U.S., most of our diet is based on palate. With Ayurveda, it is more about the function of food: Every morsel must have some function. The type of food, the timing and the temperature at which it is cooked is also important. If we really are a little more thoughtful about how we view the calories we’re consuming, it can make a big difference in our health. When we say food is our medicine, what does that really mean? In India, they’re showing us what it means. It’s not that taste is sacrificed; it’s just that Ayurveda was driven by function and palate came after.

What was the most surprising discovery you made on this journey?

There were a lot of surprises along the way. If you look at the U.S. and life expectancy, there are a lot of countries that are pretty similar in terms of economics, labor force and other things. But what is happening in the U.S. is pretty unique in a lot of ways. In the U.S., this notion of rugged individualism is a marker for success. We’ve seen high rates of social isolation and loneliness—and the toxicity of that. Italy is one of the healthiest places in the world, and a lot of that has to do with social fabric. That this social cohesion could be so protective, even without paying attention to things like diet and exercise—I think the power of that surprised me.

What is an important takeaway for you from this experience?

There is a long-held belief that wealth will buy health. In Bolivia, there is an indigenous tribe that has virtually no evidence of heart disease and they don’t even have a healthcare system. We shouldn’t automatically equate health to wealth. There are a lot of things we can do in our lives that can help—right now. Jan Hollingsworth is the national editor for Natural Awakenings.

The Minimalist Family Trading Clutter for Calm

W

by Meredith Montgomery

hen Denaye Barahona, of New York City, became a parent, she felt compelled to buy everything for her son. “We are inundated as a culture with so many products for our kids that it’s hard to differentiate what we

need; it really wears us down,” she says. While working on her Ph.D. in child development, Barahona discovered—both in research and personal experience—that kids actually thrive with less stuff. And so she began her journey toward minimal-

ism by purging toys and clothes, eventually founding SimpleFamilies.com. Cary Fortin and Kyle Quilici, of San Francisco, believe time is better spent experiencing life with people than managing, organizing, cleaning and buying things. Their book New Minimalism: Decluttering and Design for Sustainable, Intentional Living is a call to adopt a more mindful life. Fortin says, “You decide first what you value, how you want to spend your days, how you want to feel, and then reflect these values in your physical space.” “Minimalism is not about living in a tiny home and never owning more than 100 things; it’s about figuring out what brings value and purpose to your life and letting go of the rest,” says Atlanta’s Zoë Kim, author of Minimalism for Families: Practical Minimalist Living Strategies to Simplify Your Home and Life.

The Benefits

Time is precious, especially for parents. More free time is gained when a toy collection is significantly reduced, but other benefits result, as well. A 2018 University of Toledo study published in Infant Behavior and Development suggests toddlers engage in more focused and creative play when faced with fewer choices. “Kids who previously tore through bins or who didn’t care about their belongings immediately begin

engaging with toys more appropriately and for longer periods of time,” says Barahona, the author of Simple Happy Parenting: The Secret of Less for Calmer Parents and Happier Kids. Research also indicates that our limited stores of willpower are depleted more quickly when we are flooded with decisions. “When you have less stuff in a room and less choices to make, your mental state actually improves—you have more clarity and can focus better,” she says. “Because kids are so much more easily stimulated, they feel the impact of a chaotic room even more than adults.” Minimalism also arms children with self-reflection tools and introduces them to the process of letting go and donating. “They learn to ask ‘Am I enjoying this? Could I repurpose it?’ while understanding that some things we can mend and enjoy for long periods of time, and other things we outgrow—which we can then give away,” says Fortin.

Where to Start

Experts agree that in family households, the shift toward minimalism should begin with the adults. “It gives them time to understand how the process feels and models the behavior for their children,” says Fortin. Barahona streamlines her home by focusing on active spaces. “Active items are the things you use regularly, such as your two favorite pairs of jeans—not the 13 pairs you rarely wear.” When active and storage items accumulate in the same space, the need to sort through extra “stuff ” wastes time and energy, she says. “We’ve all lost our keys when we’re already running late and then suddenly we’re yelling at our kids. Simplifying so we can prevent these scenarios positively impacts our mood and our ability to be present with our kids.” Although the decluttering process starts with the parents, children should be involved as much as possible, and in a positive light. “Kids don’t like cleaning up, but with ongoing conversations and small consistent shifts, children see how less stuff can lead to more time for enjoyable activities,” says Kim.

Minimalist strategies can be applied across many realms of life, such as scaling back the family calendar and hovering less as a parent. “Family life always seems to speed up, but we can break the cycle of busy by scheduling blank time. Being intentional with time goes hand-in-hand with minimalism,” says Quilici. To stay inspired, find social media pages and websites to follow for ideas. “You’re going to hit roadblocks, so it’s important to surround yourself with inspiration,” Kim says. “Now that I’ve let go of the lifestyle I thought I needed, it’s nice to have less, but it’s even better to want less.” Meredith Montgomery publishes Natural Awakenings of Gulf Coast Alabama/Mississippi (HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com).

How to Keep the Clutter Out Set Physical Boundaries

Establish rules for what can be stored, where and how much. Childhood keepsakes, artwork, craft supplies and school papers can accumulate quickly. Limit how much can be kept by designating a box for toys or a wall to display art. Digital photos allow the memories to be kept without taking up physical space.

Create a ‘Why’ Statement

Determine how we want to feel in a space, document it and refer to it for inspiration and guidance, especially when feeling frustrated or lost.

Practice ‘One In, One Out’

Every time a new item enters the home, an old item needs to leave.

Buy Better Toys

The right toys invite kids to play more creatively over many years. Character toys may invoke more initial joy and giddiness, but a great block set will manifest longer-lasting value for kids.

MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS Beyond Buttons and Portabellas

A

by April Thompson

handful of mushrooms a day just might keep the doctor at bay, according to a mounting body of research providing powerful evidence of the fungal kingdom’s abilities to promote health and fight disease. “Mushrooms are pretty spectacular. All edible species benefit the immune system and together, support just about every system in the human body,” says Stepfanie Romine, an Asheville, North Carolina, health coach and author of Cooking With Healing Mushrooms: 150 Delicious Adaptogen-Rich Recipes that Boost Immunity, Reduce Inflammation and Promote Whole Body Health.

When Robert Beelman started doing nutritional research on mushrooms 20 years ago, they were touted for what they didn’t have: fat, calories, sugar, gluten and cholesterol. “Today, we can talk about all the good things they contain: fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other important micronutrients,” says the director of the Center for Plant and Mushroom Foods for Health at Penn State University. Beelman’s research has focused on several micronutrients that are bountiful in mushrooms, including the amino acid ergothioneine, an antioxidant not found in significant amounts in any other plant-based food source. Ergothioneine levels decrease with age, and larger drops are associated with cognitive impairment, he says. Several large epidemiological studies in Japan and Singapore have significantly correlated higher mushroom consumption with decreased rates of dementia. Countries where residents eat larger amounts of mushrooms also enjoy a higher average life expectancy, even after controlling for other variables, says Beelman. Lion’s mane is one variety known to protect cognitive health; it stimulates nerve growth factor, a protein that promotes healthy brain cells. “Lion’s mane is a cognitive enhancer, and it helps creativity, motivation and memory, as well as brain function,” Romine says.

Ancient Health Aids

Cordyceps and reishi mushrooms are also adaptogens—botanicals used for centuries in Asian medicine to help the body adapt to stresses, regulate bodily functions and support the immune and adrenal systems, according to Romine.

Turkey tail is one such medicinal mushroom, a longtime treatment for cancer and other diseases in Asia. The treebased fungus contains polysaccharide-K (PSK), that is believed to inhibit cancer cell growth and repair immune cell damage after chemotherapy. “Medicinal mushrooms have been approved adjuncts to standard cancer treatments in Japan and China for more than 30 years and have an extensive clinical history of safe use”, either alone or combined with radiation or chemotherapy, according to a literature review published by the National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute. Oyster mushrooms, another fungal superstar, contain cholesterol-lowering lovastatin, plentiful B vitamins and up to 30 percent protein, according to Paul Stamets, one of the world’s leading mushroom authorities. Oysters are also the most easily digestible mushroom, according to mycologist and herbalist Christopher Hobbs, author of Medicinal Mushrooms: An Exploration of Tradition, Healing & Culture. Hobbs’ 2017 article in HerbalGram, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Botanical Council, cites 122 different studies supporting the safety and efficacy of medicinal mushrooms such as oysters.

More Than a Pizza Topping There are myriad creative ways to incorporate mushrooms into a diet, says Romine, who recommends aiming for a half-cup daily cooked serving. “Mushrooms are nature’s sponges, and will take on the flavor of any sauce, so start simply and add sauces sparingly.” She suggests sautéing mushrooms with a neutral oil, then adding wine or sherry and finishing with fresh herbs. Cooking with wine can help unlock the beneficial compounds the fungi contain, says Romine. Fresh or dried culinary mushrooms like oysters, shiitakes or maitakes can also be great additions to morning meals like savory oatmeal or tofu scrambles. Powdered mushroom extracts, available online or in health stores, are an easy way to infuse meals with fungi’s beneficial properties. They mix well into everything from raw desserts and baked goods to teas and smoothies. Whole mushrooms that are tough, like reishi and chaga, can be boiled to extract the healthful elements and consumed as a tea or used for soup broth. Romine says raw mushrooms are not as flavorful, digestible or nutritional as cooked. While a mushroom-rich diet can help protect and promote health, Romine cautions that they are not a cure-all or a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. To address specific health concerns, she recommends working with a dietician or clinical herbalist to develop appropriate and effective ways to incorporate mushrooms into a health regimen.

Many beneficial mushrooms are available in the wild, and some exclusively so. Foraging for them can be rewarding, but proceed with caution; some edible mushrooms may have deadly lookalikes, so only forage with the help of a trained expert. Health food stores and online vendors are good sources of mushroom powders or extracts, which have a long shelf life. Look for a manufacturer of 100 percent organic mushroom extracts and supplements. Many farmers’ markets also carry specialty mushrooms like king oysters, lion’s mane or others not easily found in grocery stores. Not all mushrooms are created equal. Button mushrooms and others in the Agaricus family are lowest in micronutrients like ergothioneine, with porcinis in the Boletus family yielding the highest, according to Robert Beelman, director of the Center for Plant and Mushroom Foods for Health at Penn State University. Don’t expect magic from mushrooms, cautions author Stepfanie Romine; like most lifestyle changes or holistic treatments, it can take some months to yield results.

Creamy Old Bay King Oyster ‘Scallops’

For the “scallops”

2 (6-oz) packages king oyster mushrooms, sliced into ¾-inch rounds 1 Tbsp safflower oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup artichoke hearts 1 cup corn kernels (optional) ½ cup dry white wine 1 Tbsp butter 1 Tbsp heavy or cashew cream 1 Tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley for garnish or prepared mashed potatoes or grits for serving Mix all marinade ingredients together in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Add the mushrooms, toss to combine and marinate for at least two hours. Remove the mushrooms and reserve the remaining marinade. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the oil, then sear the mushrooms on both sides, about two minutes per side, then add the remaining marinade, garlic, artichoke hearts and corn (if using it). Deglaze the pan with the wine, scraping the bottom to loosen any brown bits.

Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover and cook for 10 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and the artichokes and corn are heated throughout. Editor’s note: To make an organic substitute for Old Bay Seasoning: 1 Tbsp paprika 1 Tbsp ground bay leaves ½ Tbsp sea salt 1 tsp black pepper ½ tsp red pepper flakes ½ tsp white pepper ½ tsp allspice Recipe used with permission from Cooking With Healing Mushrooms: 150 Delicious Adaptogen-Rich Recipes that Boost Immunity, Reduce Inflammation and Promote Whole Body Health, by Stepfanie Romine.

Natural Awakenings recommends using organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) and non-bromated ingredients whenever possible. 44

human minds frequently produce manure as well, which also can be destructive. The messages we listen to and absorb generate this manure. If we don’t recognize the manure when it starts and sift it out like waste in a litter box, it becomes more and more difficult to identify and remove. Toxic thoughts and limiting beliefs can become soundtracks that play on continuous loops in the back of our minds and affect our behavior even if we are not

eNaturalAwakenings.com

aware of them. Finding and disposing of those thoughts can have a profound effect on our well-being. The way to discover and dispose of the manure varies depending on the stage it is in.

Stage 1: Fresh Manure

Fresh manure is a thought that pops into your head that you are immediately able to recognize as toxic. It is not constructive or meaningful; it’s just distorted or meanspirited. These thoughts are relatively easy to dispose of, because they are new and stand out from the background, just like a pile of fresh manure. For example, if someone you don’t respect makes a negative comment to or about you, you may be annoyed by the rude behavior, but you probably won’t give much weight to their comment. Since you don’t take what they said seriously, it doesn’t become part of what you believe about yourself. Similarly, if you are trying something new like skiing and say to yourself the first time, “I’m a failure”, you may be able to immediately reframe that thought to, “Of course I’m not good at this, it’s my first time so there is no pressure to do it well. I’m learning.” Since you’ve mucked out that fresh manure, it isn’t likely to become a recurring theme. Consider negative comments or thoughts that are easy for you to reject. Do they fit into certain categories? What is it about those subjects that make you feel more confident? What is the process that you use to reject and remove a fresh toxic thought?

Stage 2: Midway Manure

Midway manure is a repetitive thought or belief that you still are able to question if you think about it, but mostly you ignore it. It has been in your head for a little while and is starting to become part of the soundtrack. It is harder to recognize because it’s no longer clearly distinguishable. Midway manure is also harder to remove because even if you get the bulk of it, little pieces may remain. Limiting beliefs and negative self-talk are often at this midway stage. You may hear yourself saying things

like, “I’m not smart enough, strong enough, talented…” If you say that to someone who asks why you believe that, you may be able to give some examples from your life. But if they ask you to give examples of times when you have been “smart, strong, talented”, you can still do it. In the process, you recognize the distorted perspective. Listen carefully to the messages you give yourself. Do you criticize yourself regularly, even about little things, saying things like “I’m so stupid”? Each time you have one of these thoughts, write it down. Consider if there is anything constructive behind the thought, such as, “I would like more training in this”, or if you are simply beating yourself up. The next time you hear that thought, replace it with a more positive one such as, “I made a mistake and that’s ok” or “I don’t know everything and that’s ok” and write that down too. Change your self-talk to focus on your strengths, not your perceived weaknesses.

impact you throughout your life. Once you are able to recognize and change that belief, magic can happen. Make it a habit to assess the manure in your mind anytime you are managing your pet’s waste. Sifting the cat litter box, bagging dog poop or changing the water in the fish bowl may seem like mindless tasks, but if you engage in some manure management for the mind at the same time, your home and thoughts will be healthier. Carrie Brady is the founder of Possibilities Farm in Wilton, where she partners with horses in innovative non-riding programs to bring out the best in humans. In her manure management for the mind retreat, horses help clients discover and replace their limiting beliefs. The horses generate more than 100 pounds of manure a day, so she has lots of time to practice manure management. Connect at PossibilitiesFarm.com. See ad, page 35.

Stage 3: Muddy Manure Magic

Muddy manure is almost invisible. It has blended with the dirt underneath it during wet seasons and then dried out. It is deeply embedded and impossible to remove fully without taking the dirt below with it. Muddy manure is the thoughts and limiting beliefs that have become so much a part of your background soundtrack that you don’t even hear them anymore—you simply accept them as truths in your life. Muddy manure is magical because it has started to compost, transforming the nutrients in the manure into building blocks for development. Once you find it and turn it over, it is gold, because it represents the greatest opportunity for growth. Where is the muddy manure in your mind? You may need some help recognizing this because it is so deeply embedded that you’ll think it is part of you. You’ll know you’ve hit on muddy manure when you have an emotional reaction to it. For example, if deep down you believe you are “not good enough”, that limiting belief will June 2019

NONTOXIC

LAWN CARE

Protecting Pets and the Planet by Marlaina Donato armer weather has arrived, and so begins many homeowners’ annual quest for a well-nourished, weed-free lawn. However, the grass isn’t always greener—or healthier—using conventional approaches. Turf grass covers up to 50 million acres of American land, and according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, about 60 million pounds of synthetic pesticides are used each year in yards and gardens, in addition to tens of millions more pounds applied in parks, schoolyards and other public spaces. Americans spend billions of dollars growing and maintaining manicured lawns resulting in a high price for pets, people and wildlife. Nitrogen from fertilizers seeps into surface water and groundwater, contaminating wells and spawning harmful algae blooms; pesticides kill off more than 70 million birds each year in the U.S. alone; and bees and other pollinators are also succumbing to the toxic chemicals at an alarming rate.

W

Pets at Risk

Chemicals routinely used in lawn care are especially problematic for the family dog or cat. “Animals are close to the ground, and their feet touch the ground, so every substance you choose to allow in your home and yard will affect them,” says Ashley Geoghegan, DVM, of VetNaturally, in Mandeville, Louisiana. A study conducted by the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Purdue University concludes that common lawn chemicals like glyphosate, 2, 4-D and permethrin are linked to canine bladder cancer. A six-year study by the Foster Hospital for Small Animals at the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine reveals 48

Fairfield County/Housatonic Valley Edition

that exposure to professionally applied lawn pesticides and herbicides increased the risk for canine malignant lymphoma by 70 percent. In pets, chronic or sub-chronic exposure to conventional lawncare chemicals manifests as eye damage and thyroid, urinary and reproductive conditions. Feline gastrointestinal distress is also a consequence, and even indoor cats are at risk from contaminants brought into the home. “Anything that goes on your lawn goes into your pet’s body. Pets walk through it, roll in it and then groom themselves,” says Michele Yasson, DVM, of Holistic Veterinary Services, in St. Augustine, Florida. “Max, one of my canine patients, developed acute, life-threatening pancreatitis just hours after his yard had been treated by a commercial lawncare service.”

Go Natural for Lush Lawns

Opting for a toxin-free lawn helps grass roots to anchor deeply into the earth, making them less likely to fall victim to weeds, disease and drought. An organic lawn has beneficial microbes; helpful insects like ladybugs and lacewings thrive, while pesty insects decline. Instead of chemical fertilizers and “natural” alternatives like borax, vinegar, garlic, essential oils and cocoa mulch, which can also be toxic to pets, try using grass clippings, seaweed, corn gluten meal, single-ingredient bone meal, diatomaceous earth or Bacillus thuringiensis (BT); all are better options. Redefining beauty and working with nature can also have a positive impact. “Set a goal to gradually reduce the area of your yard devoted to grass, and begin to establish plants like butterfly bush or bee balm that support pollinators such as bees,” recommends Sandy Long, of Greeley, Pennsylvania, a knowledgeable pet parent and executive director of the nonprofit environmental education organization SEEDS (Sustainable Energy Education and Development Support).

Simple Precautions

Simple precautions like removing shoes before entering the house, storing lawn products out of reach of pets and avoiding conventionally treated areas for at least 48 hours after application are paramount. Also: 4 Close windows during application. 4 Increase frequency of pet baths during spring and fall, when chemical application is highest. 4 Eliminate accumulation of water on lawns where pets might drink. 4 Leash pets during walks to keep them away from treated areas. 4 Wipe paws with a damp cloth after being outside. After weighing alternatives, dog trainer Rebecca Porter, owner of Rosy Dogs, in Stoughton, Wisconsin, settled on prescribed burns, mowing and hand removal of invasive plants. “It works, and now my dog gallops safely through the waist-high grasslands. As for my yard, I enjoy the volunteer plants. It’s a decision all landowners can make.” Marlaina Donato is the author of several books and a composer. Connect at AutumnEmbersMusic.com.

have worked in the corporate world, served as a missionary in the Middle East during 9/11 and the Iraq War, been assaulted with a knife, launched a small business and a nonprofit and suffered deep loss at the early deaths of dear friends, but nothing has terrified or paralyzed me more than fathering my own son. It has demanded me to first face my own father-story with an intensity and intentionality I would rather flee than engage. My parents more than adequately provided for my physical needs. I had friends, lived in the suburbs and even had a horse. From the outside looking in, I had nothing to complain about. Any time the haunting ache of father-hunger emerged from my soul, I quickly squelched it, telling myself to simply move on. It is the story of most men in my generation. I continued to live as if all was well until I married and had a son of my own. I was now a father, and the weight of this title sent my soul into a tailspin. What is father? Who am I as father? What does it mean to father? And finally, with the force of a left upper jab to the jaw: How was I fathered? I realized that to father him, I, myself, still needed to be fathered. In my conversations with men about their father-stories, the most frequent sentence I hear is, “My dad did okay. He did the best he could.” But no child wants an “okay” dad. Every child longs for a dad to know, see, pursue, hope, envision, create and bless. Franciscan friar and author Richard Rohr states, “If we do not transform our pain, we will transmit it in some form.” Untransformed pain from our father, whether from his absence, vacancy or violence, will inevitably be transmitted to our children. I can only take my son as far as I myself have gone. Our sons were born into an already existing story—our story—and for them to know who they are, we need to know who we are, in all of our glory and pain. From this place of freedom, we can usher our sons into a manhood we can come to know together.
