LOCAL GOOD NEWS

THE BLUEBELL IS BEST A list was compiled of the best steam journeys in the UK and the historic Bluebell Railway was named the best in England. The Bluebell Railway Plc Chairman and Board together with the all the staff and volunteers were delighted with the high standing given to their railway by the recent Boundless survey of UK’s Best Steam Rides. The accolade of ‘Best for a colourful Springtime Journey’ was also very gratefully received. Such recognition is always a great boost for the team. Well done!

Local Paralympian hits the BIG BIG time Will Bayley MBE, the gold winning Paralympian in table tennis, who grew up in Groombridge (only 20 mins away from EG!) was named as a contestant for Strictly Come Dancing this year. Will said: “I’m so proud to be on the show, it’s my family’s favourite show. I have no dance experience at all, but I hope I can do well. I want to inspire people with a disability - that would mean a lot to me. I want to prove to people I can do this.” Good luck to Will!

NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOLS Both our local comprehensive schools, Sackville and Imberhorne, had another fabulous set of both GCSE and A’Level results this year, well above national average – well done to all involved. Sackville recently honoured an incredible achievement, one of their teaches Mr. Steve Latus celebrated teaching at Sackville for forty years straight! When he started, Mrs Thatcher had just become prime-minister and Pink Floyd had just released ‘The Wall’ - a long time to serve one school! He is very fondly remembered by hundreds of geography students and those who were in the several year groups he headed up. Some lovely comments came through from old and current pupils: ‘Great man, taught me and now teaching my son. Keep going! You were a firm favourite back in my day and still are now!’, ‘The man is a legend, he taught me many years ago, and has since taught my daughter, I’m hoping my son will have the same experience soon!’. Imberhorne celebrates their 60 Years Reunion on 14th September. Dancing Through the Decades’ promises to be a fabulous opportunity for generations of ex-students to meet old classmates along with former members of staff, and celebrate their magical memories of the school but best of all to have a great time and lots of fun! The event will run between 1pm and 11pm, with music, dancing, refreshments, memory boards and more. We hope it will provide a wonderful opportunity for friends to be reunited. For more information and to book tickets, see the school website.

Bonfire Season is hotting up

© Paul Clift

If you visit a town or village in Sussex (and parts of Kent) at this time of year you may smell tea and homemade cake, hear people chatting and the clicking of staple guns. Yes! Bonfire Season is nearly upon us and what you heard was the sound of torchmaking. And this year, the good news is that East Grinstead and District group has formed a fledgling society, in the hope that bonfire will come again to East Grinstead. Bonfire Season starts this month with Uckfield, peaks with Lewes and Lindfield, and finishes with Hawkhurst. The various Bonfire Societies are all a little different, with their own traditions and styles, but usually follow a pattern of two wonderful torchlit processions of people in costume or smuggler uniform, followed by a spectacular bonfire and firework display, with often

a ‘carnival’ type atmosphere. Very different to the usual fireworks night! The origins of ‘Bonfire’ date back to the Observance Act of 1606 (which made it a requirement to celebrate the foiling of the gunpowder plot), although repealed in 1859, as we know Bonfire Night continues up and down the country. The first Bonfire Societies however, were formed in 1853 as a

compromise with the Sussex authorities to make events less raucous, and safer. The whole affair is very Sussex (with some Kent towns also taking part) and one cannot mention bonfire, without hearing about Lewes… as the traditional centre and county town of Sussex, it’s the beating heart of bonfire traditions and many locals will have visited the town on that annual, spectacular night. In this county, bonfire also remembers the many Sussex Martyrs – 17 protestant martyrs in Lewes during the reign of bloody Mary I, and of course in East Grinstead we have our own 3 martyrs which we commemorate. As our county motto of Sussex is, ‘We Wunt be Druv’ (i.e. we won’t be told what to do and

think!), we have traditionally respected people of independent thought who stand by their beliefs, and the Sussex martyrs symbolise this sentiment. Bonfire today is as much about freedom of belief and expression as it is about upholding historical traditions and remembrance. But most of all, they are great fun to be a part of. Most events are free, but take lose change for the collection buckets which, last year, raised around £65,000 for local charities. So, instead of watching TV with a pizza on a Saturday night this autumn, why not go to a bonfire event instead? You may well find you get bitten by the bug and want to join

Emma’s love of the natural world led her to create this series of pastel paintings inspired by the great British wildlife she grew up amongst. Her work aims to highlight the awe and beauty of our native British wildlife, in the hope that it may serve to encourage a reengagement with nature, and appreciation of the immense beauty that is easily overlooked. THE SPITFIRE’s coming to Town

This September our town is honoured to host the very first Battle of Britain Film Festival, presented by the Spitfire Society in association with the town council. East Grinstead has indelible links to the RAF and the Spitfire legacy, through the lifesaving work of Sir Archibald McIndoe on burned aircrew in WW2; and, of course, the world-famous Guinea Pig club, formed at Queen Victoria hospital all those years ago. Most locals know the story well. With that in mind, all locals are invited to participate in all the festival events throughout the day: 9:15am, film screening of Spitfire: Inspiration of a Nation (PG). This film is an epic tale of determination, vision and courage. It is the story of an aeroplane that was forged in competition, shaped as the war clouds gathered and refined in the white heat of combat – going on to become the most famous fighter aircraft ever made.

11:30am, Civic Dedication at the McIndoe Statue and reception at Sackville College. The High Street from College Lane roundabout to Church Lane will be closed from 11am to 12pm. Members of the public who would like to attend are requested to arrive at 11:15am. Small models of Spitfire and Lancaster planes will be placed into the ground on the McIndoe Lawn with the final one being placed by the Town Mayor. There will be short speeches from members of the current RAF and member of the Guinea Pig Club followed by a blessing and the last post. The service should last around 30 minutes. 12:30pm, film screening of Lancaster Skies (PG). This film is a loving homage to the classic British war films of the 40s and 50s. It tells the story of Douglas Miller, a broken, solitary, Spitfire ace, who survived the Battle of Britain. Douglas must take the place of a Lancaster Bomber crew's cherished and respected

skipper, who was killed in action: 2.45pm, presentations & book signing, by historians Dr Emily Mayhew on the Guinea Pig Club and VicePresident Paul Beaver on the role of Fleet Air Arm pilots in the Battle of Britain. 3:45pm, Film screening of The Secret Spitfires (PG). In 1940, the Germans destroyed the Spitfire factories in Southampton and believed they had ended the threat from their nemesis. But unknown to them, the British were building Spitfires in secret. For more information about tickets see the Chequer Mead website or call: 01342 302000. All day ticket holders receive a complimentary society pint glass and supporter’s badge! Profits from the event will be donated equally between the Queen Victoria Hospital Charity and The Spitfire Society Spitfire Fund.

Dear Sariah... Our local agony aunt, Sariah Jackson, make a welcome return. A trained midwife and mother of four, who better to ask? o.uk,

egliving.c your questions send through to info@ If you would like Sariah to answer ! wish you if e we can change your nam

Dear Sariah, I know this is a dilemma all parents face but my son has gone from being a really sweet boy to having an extreme case of teenage-itis... he pretty much refuses to clean his room, seems to do what he pleases, we manage to get him to do a couple of small jobs every now and again with much effort.. every request is met with an eye roll and then tempers flare. Any helpful suggestions would be welcome! – Rachel F.

As for the little jobs you’d like him to do, negotiation is key. Explain how important his contribution to running the house is and perhaps give him specific weekly responsibilities, such as unstacking the dishwasher, walking the dog, etc. It’s not unreasonable to expect him to do at least one job a day. I’m going to assume that he has

a mobile phone, perhaps access to a games console. These can be excellent bargaining tools for parents who struggle to get children to contribute to household chores. If you are constantly met with defiance when asking for his help, explain that those things are luxury items that can be removed temporarily if needs be. In my home, the weekly allowance is attributed to chores. No chores = no money. Teenagers can be tricky. That’s the truth. They need firm boundaries and open conversations. Often, a rational discussion about why you’re asking them to do something is all you need. Whilst it's often hard not to engage in bickering with a belligerent teen, try to remain the adult. Love them, laugh with them and don’t unstack the dishwasher if you’ve asked him to do it. Just turn off the WiFi if he refuses.

SUDOKUS

Hi. You haven’t mentioned how old your son is but I’m going to assume he is an actual teenager. By definition, many teenagers struggle to see beyond their own world and are often difficult to negotiate with when you’re asking them to do something that they don’t feel they need to do. My first piece of advice regarding teenagers is to pick your battles. It’s easy to feel like you are constantly asking them to do something and being met with deaf ears or petulant attitude but it can also, from their perspective, feel like you are constantly on their back. The teenage years are often tricky to negotiate, so you need to think about what is really important in terms of boundaries and respect. The first battle that I would let go is your son’s room. I know this can be difficult to do but it’s his space and it can be helpful to respect that space. If he wants to sleep in a messy room, ask yourself why this bothers you? Often it is about control. If you can, try stepping away from the control of his room and leave him to it. Occasionally you may have to ask him to collect up the towels or bring down some plates but privacy and ownership in a bedroom is really important to teenagers.

Stylist This month we are very pleased to bring you an exclusive Autumn style guide, from award-winning personal stylist Susie Hasler.

© Mollie Rae Manning

Susie runs ‘Styled by Susie’ with up-to-date style advice across the seasons to her many followers on social media.

Last month, East Grinstead-based, 36-year-old Susie made national press when she posted to her many Instagram followers, explaining how she came to the rescue of a teenager trying on sunglasses whose friend was grabbing passers-by to get them to tell the teenager how terrible she looked in the glasses. Susie soon set things straight by offering her own style advice of how great the glasses looked and encouraging her to buy them if her gut feeling was a yes!

SUITS:

Here are some of her latest tips for the Autumn 2019 trends:

The catwalks have been increasingly non-binary. With that in mind, there are more unisex lines being introduced and the silhouettes this season reflect that.

It’s time to say goodbye to shorts and sandals, Autumn is just around the corner!

The beauty of buying a trouser suit is you can get different styles out of it.

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the emerging trends to see what patterns are forming - so, say hello to statement bags, neon shoes, feathers and (yes!) double denim.

Switch out trainers for loafers or brogues and wear it as a set - or use the jacket with a pair of jeans for a smart, casual look.

As always, you can skip a trend or jump on it, depending on your preference.

Or you can wear the trousers with a fine-knit jumper with loafers or brogues and a biker jacket.

Here’s how to wear them with confidence.

FEATHERS: I’ll be leaving this trend alone - I can just imagine getting my feathers matted on a drizzly school run! Keep an eye out for feathers on shoes (very Nineties) and on Christmas party frocks. It’s lovely to see some designers creating synthetic feathers to keep their lines cruelty free. Others have been sourcing feathers that have naturally molted.

STATEMENT BAGS: Big bags are flattering if you’re curvy - but my favourite thing about them is how much I can fit into them. Choose prints or patterns to jazz up a dark winter coat, or a neutral hue to complement more outfits.

TARTAN:

WAIST BELTS:

Nineties’ grunge isn’t leaving anytime soon! Tartan looks great with thick black tights and ankle boots. If you love the rock chick style, branch out with Dr Marten boots or studded biker ones.

These went out of fashion a few years ago but they are back with a bang. I’ve always loved adding a belt to my outfits as it gives my shape definition. You can have fun with a thin belt or thick one, or even a chain style!

DOUBLE DENIM: Is that the sound of B*Witched playing? Yes, double denim is back, particularly the darker shades of denim such as indigo and black. With this in mind, you can keep wearing those denim boiler suits throughout the winter months - pop an extra layer underneath to keep you cosy.

NEON SHOES: Hailey Bieber caught my eye with her neon heels, distressed jeans and blazer, earlier in the year. A pop of colour can make a dark winter outfit, and if you’re wearing a black dress to your Christmas do, let your feet do the talking with some brights.

LEATHER: Get those coated (or leather-look) jeans back out, because leather is here to stay! They’re a great alternative to skinny jeans. You can dress them down with a hoodie and trainers, or up for evening drinks with heels and a blouse. If you haven’t got one already, start looking out for a biker jacket next season - you can wear it with everything. I prefer pleather over leather, because I find it less bulky (and it’s cheaper).

POCKETS: I’ve kept the best one for last – pockets! So many clients leap with joy when they try on a dress with pockets. I love them because I’m so awkward, it’s somewhere to put my hands while I’m talking to someone. Pockets are getting a supersized makeover and you’ll see them on coats and blazers in particular.

NEW FOR 2019! Ashdown Forest Summer Photo Competition Entry to the competition is free. Email your photos to us by 30th September. The photos should reflect the forest in late summer and early autumn and can be of wildlife or landscape (no photographs of people please).

As we move into autumn, the forest is changing – the heather is starting to bloom, covering the landscape with a purple hue; fungi are appearing in the woods and open heath; plants and trees are bearing fruit and the leaves are preparing to fall; the weather and light is different every day. There is no better time to go out with your camera. We are launching a photo competition open to all. We will be running the competition seasonally and the winner’s photo will be used as the cover photo on our website and social media pages.

The photos will be judged by the staff and volunteers at the Ashdown Forest Centre. The staff will choose a top-ten for each category, with one winning entry for each category to be announced 1st November 2019. Please check our website for details and terms and conditions. www.ashdownforest.org If you would like to support us and help with the preservation of our amenity spaces, car parks and other conservation work, find out more here: www.ashdownforest.org/management/ fundraising.php www.easydonate.org/ASHD001

NEW FOR 2019: JUMBLE TRAIL Are your cupboards cluttered? Is your shed stuffed? Do you want to turn some of your pre-loved goodies into cash while supporting a local charity? Or do you just love browsing and finding a bargain? Come and join the East Grinstead Jumble Trail on the 22nd September! Similar to the traditional American yard sale, our Jumble Trail will see neighbours and friends setting up stalls in front of their houses in EG and surrounding villages. On sale will be toys, music, clothes, homemade baked goodies, arts and crafts and loads more. Visitors can follow online or paper maps to walk around their local streets, hunting for bargains as they go.

There is a £5 fee per stall, a small amount of which goes towards covering admin costs, and the rest will go to QVH Charity to help fund equipment. So, what are you waiting for, sign up now! Email EGJumbleTrail@gmail.com or message us via Facebook page ‘East Grinstead Jumble Trail’, so we can work towards a more sustainable future and grab a good bargain in the meantime.

The trail has been set up by a group of volunteers who came together via the Facebook groups ‘Sustainable Living EG’ and ‘What’s Happening in EG’. Sustainable Living was set up by the inspirational Laura Flight as a way to bring the local community together, working for a more sustainable future. A Jumble Trail is the perfect opportunity for you meet your neighbours, give to charity and also pass on your unwanted belongings that would otherwise end up in landfill.

hand dived scallops, red pepper peanut dressing Serves 4

By Alex Floyd, Pastry Chef, Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

For the curried parsnip purée • 250g parsnip, peeled and chopped • 5g curry powder • 5g ground coriander • 4g ground cumin • 1 pinch ground turmeric, small • vegetable oil • 50 ml milk • 50 ml double cream • Salt Place a saucepan over a medium heat and add a dash of vegetable oil, followed by the parsnips and spices. Reduce the heat and cook for 40 minutes, or until the parsnips start to soften. Add the cream and milk, bring to a simmer and cook for a further 5 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat, transfer the contents of the pan to a blender and blitz on full speed until a smooth purée forms. Transfer the purée to a clean saucepan and season to taste with salt. Cover with a cartouche until ready to reheat and serve.

For the peanut dressing • • • •

400 ml rapeseed oil 150g peanut 150g red pepper Mix ingredients together.

For the scallops • 12 scallops, large • vegetable oil • salt

Make sure the scallops are cleaned and stored in the refrigerator on a clean tea towel or J-cloth before cooking. To prepare the scallops, cut each in half to form 2 rounds and season lightly with salt. Meanwhile, begin to reheat the parsnip purée.

until golden brown on each side. Repeat to cook the rest of the scallops. To plate Arrange spoonful of the parsnip purée around each plate, then top each mound of purée with a scallop half. One can garnish with crispy parsnips, caviar and micro cress and drizzle over the peanut dressing. Serve immediately.

Place a frying pan over a high heat and add a dash of vegetable oil. Once the pan is almost smoking, add a few of the scallops, making sure you do not overcrowd the pan, as this will cause them to stew and not sear and caramelise. Sear the scallops on each side for 30-45 seconds or

THE EAST GRINSTEAD STEEPLECHASE by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Muesum A visitor asked me recently if I knew anything about the East Grinstead Steeplechase. I didn’t, but I was curious and tried to find out if it even existed. She thought it might have been run over the area that is now under the Weirwood Reservoir, as this would have been flat, as racecourses are today. On investigating, it appears, as is obvious when you think about it, steeplechases are run over obstacles, such as hedges and ditches. The origin of them lies in races run over rough countryside in the 18th and 19th centuries, literally from steeple to steeple. These were very prominent landmarks towards which the riders could steer. East Grinstead’s Church, St Swithuns, once had a spire, which was struck by lightning in 1763. As the present tower can be seen for miles around, it would seem possible that it would be the beacon for races in the district. With almost everyone then having a horse, and the fact that the army was largely cavalry, the use of horses for their amusement would be an obvious choice of recreation, apart from fox-hunting, especially for the gentry with time on their hands. Steeple-chasing began in the south of England, but later proved more popular in the north. I have yet to find where the East Grinstead Steeplechase started from, but the West Hoathly area seems to be a possibility. This would be right for the distance between them. Most steeplechases were run over a distance of

between two and four miles. The terrain also, would have been ideal, crossing farmland with its fences, hedges and ditches and numerous small streams. The final climb towards the town would provide a testing finish to the race. The only reference I have found, so far, to the East Grinstead Steeplechase was, in a book by William Blew, but it did not mention the course. On p. 295 there is the record of it being run on April 5th 1836. The race was won by Major Martin Becher on a horse called Wise. Martin Becher was a prominent and successful steeplechasing jockey in the early C19th. His name lives on at Aintree, on the Grand National Course. The notorious Becher’s Brook is named after him. In the same year as the East Grinstead Steeplechase, Becher was unseated at this difficult fence. He was aware of the danger from the horses behind him, so he rolled into the ditch to shelter. The incident was the talk of the riders, as he was a well-respected and competent jockey. So, to commemorate his unusual fall, the fence was named after him. John Hislop, a well-known writer on all things connected to horse racing, wrote, “Steeplechasing has about it rather more glamour and excitement than the flat, a trace of chivalry, a spice of danger and a refreshing vigour that…flat racing lacks…. It gives the impression of being a sport and not primarily a business.”

and poet Nick Nye and composer Simon Austin. Posing urgent questions of beliefs and actions taken in their name, this hard-hitting cantata features the choir, bass Mark Beesley, Autumnal Strings, led by George Clifford, flautists Ivor Humphreys and Jennifer Kirk and the harpist, Anna Wynne. The packed programme includes two World Premieres of Simon’s music: His End Was… for solo flute, to be performed by its commissioner, Ivor Humphreys and Summoned, to another Nick text, by the soprano Helen Underwood Lewis. A nod to American music is through Barber’s lovely A Cappella part song, The Coolin and an arrangement of the ironic Spiritual Soon we will be done with the troubles of the world! But the mainstay of the programme is Baroque, with Bach’s fabulous Cantata 140, Wachet Auf, featuring Mark and Helen and the oboist Helen Nye at the start, the evening finishing with a flourish in Handel’s evergreen anthem, Zadok the priest. Tickets are available from Bullfrog Music, East Grinstead, choir members and at the door, £15. A retiring collection will support St Catherine’s Hospice. At 7:30pm, in Highbrook All Saints.

WHAT’S ON AT CHEQUER MEAD FRIDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER AT 8PM East Grinstead Autumn Comedy Gala: Known for venting his spleen in unguarded “off camera” rants, Jonathan Pie will be trying out his work in progress show as he headlines the Comedy Gala this Autumn. This is political satire at its finest. He will be joined by award-winning Bristolian Jayde Adams, an uncut gem who is renowned for being a force of nature with Dawn French calling her “the 3rd funniest woman in the world. Fact”. Tickets: £15 in advance, £17 on the door.

Mid-Sussex Timber celebrates its 90th anniversary Mid-Sussex Timber saw in an outstanding milestone this year, as it proudly celebrated its 90th year in business. Since 1929, MST has been supplying directly imported timber to the traders and retailers and is now one of the largest stockists in Sussex. Since the first branch opened in East Grinstead, the business has gone from strength to strength, having expanded to three other locations including Haywards Heath, Forest Row, and most recently, Crowborough. Fast forward 90 years and the business, to this day, remains family-run and is operated by second and third-generation family members: Tim, Simon, Alex and Cara Waters.

To celebrate this impressive milestone, the team held an evening of racing at Lingfield Park Racecourse and to mark such a notable occasion, the invitation was extended to past as well as present employees. Alex Waters, Operations Director and grandson of the founder, said: “90 years is a landmark anniversary for any company, but for a small independent business such as ourselves, it is even more ground-breaking. A celebration like this gives us a valuable opportunity to reward all our staff who worked so hard to get Mid-Sussex Timber to where it is today’.
