LOCAL GOOD NEWS

New Equestrian Team for Imberhorne A team of girls have made school history by forming their very first Equestrian School Team! There are currently 4 members all of whom are in year 9, and they're looking to expand. The team currently consists of Libby Webber, Ella Bates, Millie Spencer, Georgina Crawley and Tilly Vandervell and is being managed by Libby's mother, Beverly. They have already entered their first competition and looking forward to future success in the equestrian arena. Good luck girls!

Mid-Sussex Applauds Awards Last month was the inaugural Mid Sussex Applauds Awards; there were various people and groups from East Grinstead who received recognition. One such outstanding awardee was Sackville Head Boy, Ayo Odeyinde, named Young Volunteer of the Year at the reception at East Court last month. During his summer holidays Ayo arranged a sports summer club, obtaining all of the necessary permissions, arranging for DBS checks for helpers and securing funding. Twenty primary aged students each day had their holidays enormously enhanced by his efforts. He regularly volunteers as a sports leader at Estcots Primary School, offers his services to the Welcome Cafe at Trinity Methodist Church and also accompanies members of his scout troop to Charters Retirement Village to support residents there. Well done Ayo for this well-deserved accolade! Nathan White, also from East Grinstead was joint 2nd 'Young Volunteer of the Year'. He has worked to improve Moat Pond, which was so important to him as a child. He has just finished his first year at Plumpton College where he is studying Fisheries Management. Nathan

worked with the council officers as to what was wanted, he wrote a management plan, set up a Friends of Moat Pond Facebook page and has written several risk assessments for work parties working on the grounds. Nathan is passionate about the environment and his home town. Recently he met the South & South East in Bloom judges who were so complimentary of him. Well done Nathan!

Be a Friend

to your local

Hedgehogs By Deborah Johnson, Local Wildlife A&E

The humble hedgehog, our little iconic friend, is in big trouble for a variety of reasons, and needs our help now. The problems are manifold: one is new housing estates going up with no space left between the gardens for hedgehogs to roam; they can travel up to 2 miles in a night if they have the space. Another is the more simplistic approach to gardens where they are paved over and plants are kept in pots, leaving nowhere for the hogs to live or forage. Many types of slug pellets can kill the hedgehog, so please use pet-friendly slug pellets from garden centres. Many are killed or left with horrific injuries by lawn-mowers and strimmers. Please always check patches of long grass before cutting. Some of the favoured places for hedgehogs are corners of long grass, they roll themselves up in it; they also love log piles. Always check underneath before lighting your bonfire. One of the strange facts about hedgehogs is they give birth late in the year, between September and October, which is not a good time as winter is fast approaching and they need to hibernate. This is no problem for the adults who will start hibernation as soon as

the first frosts arrive; it’s not so good for the youngsters. A hedgehog needs to weigh at least 650g to survive sleeping through the winter and sadly some of the late babies will not make enough weight gain in those few short months. If you see a small hedgehog out in the day or night, at this time of year, please weigh it. If it is under 650g, put it in a box with a towel and hot water bottle, shallow bowl of water, dry cat food and call your local wildlife rescue. In fact, any hedgehog seen out during the day time has a problem. The weight doesn’t matter; please pick it up and do the same as above. To help our hedgehogs there are number of things you can do. Leave a corner of your garden to go wild, add a log pile, pile of old bricks, or even pile up the leaves from the trees. You don’t need to spend fortunes on a posh hedgehog house, they probably wouldn’t stay in it anyway. We put a very nice home together for the hogs in our winter group and each week, they would move all the straw and bedding to another nook in the pen.

BE A FRIEND TO YOUR LOCAL HEDGEHOGS

If you garden is fenced all around, cut a 5”x 5” hole in the bottom of your fence to give them access to other gardens and ask your neighbours to do the same. You can make a simple feeding station by turning a plastic storage container upside down; cut a 5x5” hole in one end, pop the food underneath and place something heavy on top to stop it being turned over. This will keep the food safe and dry for the hedgehogs and not just feed the cats in the area. A large shallow dish of water can be left out for anything visiting your garden. Put food out regularly and they may stay. Never feed them with milk and bread, they cannot digest this. Dry or wet cat/dog food is perfect. Meal worms aren’t good for them as they also cause them problems. If you have a pond make sure it has a shallow area or a sloping edge for them to get in and out, if not attach some chicken wire to the side or put in some rocks to give then a way to climb out. They love a swim occasionally.

The only predator the hedgehog has is the badger, but they have been seen feeding side by side in the wild, so it is thought that badgers will only take one if food is very scarce. Dogs can cause harm to hedgehogs so please be aware, if you find one in your garden, they can cause nasty injuries, to themselves and the hog. In essence, hedgehogs don’t need a lot of encouragement to pass through your garden but they are vulnerable and their numbers are under threat. So please do what you can to help our little spiky friends. If you need any help or advice please contact Wildlife A&E 07709574665 or 07767058727

© Dariusz Plucinski

Football/cricket/tennis nets should be taken

down or rolled up when not in use, these are dangerous for all wildlife. Hedgehogs try to go through then realise they are stuck, there is no way they can go back as their spines don’t let them, and unless you check the nets regularly, they will starve.

This month, thanks to East Grinstead resident Dariuz Plucinski, we are able to bring you a stunning aerial shot of the town which you can see on the front cover. Here is another brilliant shot from high up of some of the beautiful buildings in our town

East Grinstead Dates for your Diary November and December are busy times in the East Grinstead calendar, the countdown to Christmas has begun and here is all you need to know: and starts and finishes at the museum. There is no need to book, simply turn up at the museum (please note – they can only accommodate the first 20 guests, therefore, to avoid disappointment we recommend arriving early!). £5 per person, no concessions, Saturday 30th November and 14th December at 10.30am Before we reach the festivities, East Grinstead will come together for a Service of Remembrance on Sunday 10th November. A parade will leave London Road/ King Street at 10.30am to process to the High Street War Memorial where a service of Remembrance will be held followed by 2 minutes silence. The High Street will be closed from 10.15 until midday. Join East Grinstead Museum for guided walks. Your guide will walk you through the history of the town from medieval times through to the present day, with a seasonal flavour! The tour will last around 90 minutes

At Standen there will be a chance to admire the 20ft Winter tree in the court yard from 23rd November. Created by NEON the tree promises to be a spectacle for the senses in the form of a musical tree that will harness nature to create a magical noise through the garden. The Bluebell Railway has invited Father Christmas to visit them and you can join him and his elves on the Santa Special trains from 30th November to 24th Decembersee their website. Chequer Mead Theatre has a classic, family favourite panto this year: Cinderella. The clock is ticking, so get your tickets

before they disappear in a puff of fairy dust! And finally, Christmas starts early in East Grinstead, as it should, being home to the famous carol Good King Wenceslas, written in Sackville College. The Big Reveal and Grand Lights Switch On 23rd November. From 4pm to 8pm, the Town Mayor switches on the lights and the traders will unveil their festive window displays. There’ll be fun, surprises and late-night shopping and then there’s the Christmas Family Festival on London Road, Sunday 1st December: French market, craft stalls and children’s funfair rides. From 10am to 4pm. There is so much to see and do around East Grinstead and for more information about events, etc. please contact the Tourist information desk in the Library, call 01342 410121 or email tourism@ eastgrinstead.gov.uk. I look forward to seeing you all around the town. Dawn Spalding, Town Promotions Manager.

TOTALLY TREES The Woodland Trust recently launched a national campaign, the Big Climate Fightback, to get one million people to pledge to plant a tree by Saturday 30th November. This month represents the start of the traditional tree planting season and the end of November is National Tree Week, a week of tree planting organised by the Tree Council and is also Tree Charter Day – a national day of celebration of trees and woods. © Ben Hatwell

What will be happening? The Woodland Trust will be hosting public tree planting days across the UK on the 30th. There will be at least one event in each of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and at least five events across England. They will also be sending out over 700,000 free trees to schools and communities for planting in late November. There are already people in East Grinstead and surrounding villages who have taken the step to planting trees in their garden this year or committing to doing so in the near future. We are pleased to bring you a couple of examples of local families who have taken this step. The Woodland Trust are hoping a million people will get involved. That’s many more people than live in the local area! But if we can make even a tiny dent in that number, we can be proud of ourselves. Every tree counts!

‘We recently bought a small patch of woodland and while researching the old iron workings which we found there, we discovered that there was an apple tree called Sussex Forge, which was recorded in East Grinstead in the 1850s. Leading us to reintroduce a couple in our own garden.’ Gillian and Mike Glover Ashurstwood ‘As a family we are changing our purchasing habits and also trying other ways to reduce our impact on the climate. Part of this is planting trees in our garden and fruit and nut trees seem to us the way to go. Not only are you planting a tree but you are reducing food miles on the fruit and nuts you consume. We hope that this although small difference will add up with everyone else and make a big difference.’ Paton Family, East Grinstead

NEW for Nymans: Quentin Blake Exhibition This year Nymans is very proud to be able to host a new exhibition of work from legendary illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. Featuring illustrations from Quentin’s self-penned books and artwork from his Art in Hospitals work, the exhibition is a reminder of the power of the imagination and how joy can be found in the unlikeliest of places. There’s also a chance to find out more about how Quentin draws, with a recreation of his studio and an opportunity to practise your own drawing technique. The exhibition has just started and a will run through the festive season. Then from Saturday 23rd November, a fun & festive trail

will be around the gardens, which takes its inspiration from Blake’s, ‘The Story of the Dancing Frog’ with a chorus line of froggy sculptures. Created especially for Nymans in conjunction with Wild in Art, it is especially perfect for children! Join storyteller, Jason Buck, in the Gallery for storytelling sessions on Saturday 14th, 21st & 28th December at 11:30am, 12:30pm and 1:30pm when he brings tales from the wondrous world of Quentin Blake to life. A unique opportunity to hear Quentin’s stories while surrounded by the original artwork. There’s

no need to book as timed tickets are available on the day (no charge, but donations welcome). Get creative with drop in family Christmas crafts on weekends leading up to Christmas, with a series of hands on Christmas makes. And then join in with school holiday boredom busters from Friday 27th December until Sunday 5th January with drop in and pick up family activities. During the winter months, Nymans welcome dogs into the garden in the afternoons from 1.30pm, so all the family can join in the fun.

There is no mention of the month of November in any of Shakespeare’s plays or sonnets. November was called Blōtmōnaþ (modern English: blót month, blood month) by the Anglo-Saxons. The scholar Bede mentioned in his treatise De temporum ratione (The Reckoning of Time), saying "Blod-monath is month of immolations (sacrificing), for it was in this month that the cattle which were to be slaughtered were dedicated to the gods’. November has been designated National Novel Writing Month and National Blog Posting Month. The birthstones of November are the topaz and the citrine, both known for their calming energies, bringing warmth and fortune to those who wear them. The topaz in particular symbolizes friendship and it is said to cure madness and eliminate nightmares. The citrine is supposed to spark imagination and symbolizes new beginnings.

About November!

Winter once began on 11th November, according to the calendar of ancient Rome. As we know, this is now an important date in our yearly calendar: Remembrance Sunday.

Lemon Cleaning Tip The best way to give your wooden cutting boards an extra spa treatment and get them really clean & disinfected: You’ll need • half of a lemon • coarse salt • a scraper tool of some kind • sponge or cloth 1. Sprinkle the cutting board with coarse salt 2. Using a lemon half with the cut side down, scour the surface well, squeezing slightly to release the lemon juice as you go. 3. Let sit for at least 5 minutes – 10 minutes, and then scrape the dirty liquid away, using any scraping implement. 4. Give your chopper a good, final rinse with a clean sponge.

EAST GRINSTEAD STREET NAMES by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Muesum Another road that was renamed, is Glenvue. It is recorded as Glenvue as late as 1891. By 1901 is being called Railway Approach. Logical as it does form the approach to the railway station, but more prosaic.

Recently, someone called at the museum and asked where “Cemetery Road” was. On consulting with an old map, they discovered that it was the original name for “Queens Road”. Apparently, the residents of Cemetery Road did not like the name, descriptive as it was. The cemetery opened in 1868, once the churchyard could not hold any more graves, and was located there. They took the opportunity of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, to rename it Queens Road. There is also some confusion regarding King Street. Forming, as it does, a staggered crossroads, with Queen Street and the London Road, near the old Post Office, it is logical to

assume a royal connection; there is none, however. King Street was named after one of the two people who improved the area around the Institute, which stood on the site of the entrance to the newly formed King Street and the London Road. Christopher and Harry King drew up plans for the area in the thirties, a time of depression and unemployment. They rebuilt the former Grosvenor Hall and put a new Art Deco façade on it. The Radio Centre and Caffyns Garage were also built in the Art Deco style (now travelodge) as was Jubilee Court on Christopher Road. King Street was thus named after Harry King, and Christopher Road, named for his business partner.

I was not aware of other roads which have had changes to their names, but from the census I discovered that West Street was called Chapel Lane in 1861, presumably because of the presence of Zion Chapel at the top. The newly opened Police Station is mentioned, which was definitely in West Street by 1871. We are fortunate that many of our roads are so-called, to preserve the memory of a person, place or event which otherwise could be lost over time. One of the early examples of this is the Lancaster Drive Estate. The road names there are either of aircraft used in the Second World war or men who were Guinea Pigs at the hospital opposite. Lancaster Drive itself, Merlin Way, Stirling

EAST GRINSTEAD STREET NAMES CONTINUED

Avenue are all names of aeroplanes, which helped win the battle for our skies. Gleave Close, and Hillary Close are called after two of the valiant aircrew who were badly burned when they were shot down.

School, running alongside the playing fields of the school where she worked for many years. Sister Ann’s Way commemorates the Anglican Sister at St Margaret’s Convent, upon whose grounds the new road is built.

Some developers have their own ideas of what is suitable. The Herontye Estate was built by someone who was more interested in the Plantagenets, Tudors and Stuarts, than the more recent local history. Apart from the obvious Tudor Close, we have Regal Drive, Cavalier Way and Clarence Drive. On the Gardenwood Estate the roads are called after the developers favourite authors and poets. Shelley Road and Milton Crescent among them. Included also is The Blytons, suggested no doubt by his young daughter!

Wagg Close remembers the late Alfred Wagg, who gave the East Court Mansion and Estate to the town. His sister, Elsie was the founder of the Open Gardens Scheme, which raises money for nurses charities. Sir Archibald McIndoe, the plastic surgeon whose pioneering work with the badly burned aircrew is also commemorated, though not close to the Lancaster Drive area.

Then there are streets named for former residents who have contributed to the good of the community. More recently the East Grinstead Town Council has a list of suitable names for new streets and houses to be called. We have my late colleague and local historian, Michael Leppard, for supplying them with appropriate names. One of the latest examples are Hilda Duke’s Way, named for the long serving headmistress of Blackwell

Champion Changize plus food for six months and training on how to look after them and the basics of how to run a simple business.

A small, but locally wellsupported charity, Champion Changize was established 6 years ago when founder and East Grinstead resident, Philippa Jacobs visited Changize, a Primary School in Southern Tanzania which was horrendously underresourced, with little access to basic needs such as pens, pencils, paper and books. They had no electricity and struggled to deliver the required curriculum. Since that time Philippa and a group of stalwart supporters have been changing the fortunes of Changize and other schools nearby. Here is Philippa’s latest update to the EG Living: Recently we decided that we will, for the most part, concentrate on projects that help to give young people a skill. In Tanzania, if you don’t pass your exam at the end of your primary education, you

do not get the opportunity to go on to secondary school or any vocational training like the young people in the UK do. It is hoped that all children will pass the exam but in practice this is not always the case. So the charity is tackling this aspect of education. The steps we’ve taken so far are: putting a small chicken farm in six schools, by providing the chicken house, a fence chicken run and approximately 100 chickens,

We’ve also completed a pilot project where we put a kitchen garden into a school, the students were turning a profit within just a few weeks of the garden being completed! We tried to add a creative and environmental element to this project by creating the flower beds using recycled tyres. The project was facilitated by three Imberhorne students that had just completed their A levels, they did a fantastic job. The children run these businesses by themselves, with any profit made is invested back into the school. These projects have an impact throughout the community, as not only are the children learning a skill, the school is benefiting from the profit and the locals are getting eggs and meat that was not available before.

Party Season

Late November sees the start of the party season! Here are some beauty tips to help you look your best:

PREPAR AT ION – A flawless glowing skin is the best base for makeup, it’s the best time to treat yourself to a facial!

A BR I L LI ANT B ODY E XFOL IANT – Mix 2 tbls of

H Y D R AT I O N – Over the Autumn and Winter months central heating and the contrast to the cold outdoors can play havoc with one’s skins. It is important to have a good moisturiser, invest in a cosmeceutical hyaluronic acid and exfoliate weekly – sloughing off those dead skin cells leaves skin brighter.

S U G AR -It is not only terrible for us internally, but is dreadful for our complexion – it helps cause break outs, dull complexion, increase in wrinkles, etc.

VITAM IN BO OS T BOTH IN T ER NAL LY AND EXTER NALLY

coconut oil with 2 tbls of brown sugar and 2 tbls coffee grains. Be warned it is messy but leaves your skin silky soft and tight.

KE E PING YOU R NAIL S L OOKING GO OD - Gel nails

last for around two weeks. 2 gel manicures should get you through the party season. Time and book your manicure to coincide with your special events. Try using a good cuticle oil to aid with the strength of the regrowth, the quality of the cuticles and in turn your nails will look better for longer.

REMEMBER TO KEEP M OV I N G – This time of year can encourage hibernation on the sofa but it is important to keep moving; this helps to pump the blood and the lymphatic system reducing bloating and puffiness along with helping the overload on the liver and kidneys.

A good topical cosmeceutical Vitamin C in the morning and Retinol at night as well as taking a 1000ml of Vitamin C and a Vitamin B complex will help protect you from free radicals, keep skin looking younger and help boost your immune system.

K E E P I N G T H AT S M I L E B R I G H T

Buy some good stain removing toothpaste; perhaps a charcoal powder, they are super messy, but very effective.

ALWAYS TAKE YOUR MAKEUP OFF

before bed and please do not use facial wipes; they are full of chemicals and disturb our skins acid mantle causing many issues. For convenience look at a micellar based cleanser oil or foam that can do remove eye make-up as well as. Try and remember to double cleans at night to make sure all makeup residue is fully off.
