Chicken & banana korma recipe This mild chicken curry is packed full of flavour and it’s healthier than a standard takeaway korma.

Ingredience • 2 tsp vegetable oil • 500g skinless, boneless uncooked chicken breasts, chopped • 1 large onion, chopped • 1 apple, cored and chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed • 2 tbsp korma curry paste • 400ml vegetable or chicken stock • 25g sultanas or raisins • 25g chopped ready-to-eat apricots • 300g easy-cook long grain brown rice • 1 tbsp cornflour • 1 banana, sliced • 4 tbsp plain yoghurt • 1 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped (to garnish) • 1 pinch ground black pepper

Method Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan. Add the chicken, onion, apple and garlic, and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring often. Add the curry paste and cook for a few seconds, stirring. Add the stock, raisins or sultanas and apricots. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered, for 35 minutes. Add a little more stock or water, if necessary. Brown rice takes 30-35 minutes to cook, so put it in plenty of simmering water. Just before serving, blend the cornflour with 2 tbsp cold water and add to the curry, stirring until thickened. Slice in the banana, cooking gently for another few moments. Check the seasoning, adding pepper, if needed. Serve, topping each portion with 1 tbsp yoghurt and accompanied with the rice. Garnish with coriander, if using.

Anyone remember a very loud, very huge, mystery BANG that happened in East Grinstead in 1957? It made the papers and had Greenwich observatory wondering if it was a meteorite and locals wondering if it was a plane crash or bomb… well, after all these years, Martin Horsfall reveals the cause:

our house in Imberhorne Lane. So, under cover of darkness (I was only 2 so don't remember it) they let it off. It made a huge bang and all the front doors in the road simultaneously opened to see what on earth had happened. The two of them hid in a hedge for a couple of hours until it was safe to come out and were given a right suitable ticking off by their respective wives. The explosion was reported in the papers and gained much local attention…It’s been a wellkept family secret until now!’

News from the local Wildlife A&E A few weeks ago, we had a lovely little girl hedgehog brought to us whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d been found walking round in circles. After checking ears and eyes she was found to be completely blind. We were so upset because finding her a home was going to be difficult and seeing her walking round in circles in the hospital was awful. But then I had a lovely couple of ladies bring me a nest of pigeons found in a building which was being demolished. Whilst chatting they made a comment about their tortoise garden which was totally enclosed. A lightbulb moment! I asked them if they would like a hedgehog too. To my delight they said they would try it and see how she does. Well once she found her way around, she has settled in really well and made friends with the tortoises and is very happy. She can now be found wandering around collecting grass to line her bedroom and is such a happy hog. Wildlife A&E is a non-profit organisation who help injured/orphaned wildlife back to the wild. Young East Grinstead student produces incredible metal work 17-year-old Ned Taylor, has been putting his time off school to very good use, having earned his private pilotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s licence just before lockdown, he was forced to re-think his career path. He liked the idea of welding and was encouraged by his parents to speak to Anvils Blacksmiths in Grinstead Lane. Thanks to Anvils giving him the opportunity to do work experience, Ned has discovered a true passion and talent for working with metal. Jason Willie and his father have been teaching Ned to weld and giving him free rein to produce some really incredible original work, such that one might find at a top gallery! Anvils have now offered Ned an apprenticeship, where he will continue his training with them and also attend college to gain a qualification in Engineering, Fabrication & Welding. All of his work has already been sold to friends. We eagerly await to see what Ned produces in the future. Good Luck Ned!

EG man starts a SpeedQuizzing craze for charity An East Grinstead quiz host is raising money for two local charities through a series of increasingly popular virtual SpeedQuizzes. Rob Marsh began hosting virtual quizzes as a way of keeping in touch with his quizzing regulars during lockdown, when all pubs were closed. Using SpeedQuizzing Live, which is a free app and online platform that enables users to host and play fast-paced quizzes, Rob hosted his first weekly ticketed quiz back in April. 16 quizzes later, Rob has succeeded in raising £1052 through a combination of him donating £1 for every quiz ticket sold and the winning teams donating their prize money which is being pledged to the local NHS Charities Together and East Grinstead-based Jigsaw South East. Rob said: “I’ve been running popular SpeedQuizzes in a couple of local pubs for over a year now, so when the lockdown happened, I decided to take advantage of the SpeedQuizzing Live platform, and host virtual quizzes, primarily for my regular players. “I had modest ambitions about raising some funds for good causes, so to say I’m delighted with what has been raised 16 quizzes on, would be an understatement.

“I’ve had up to 50 teams joining every week from all over the country as word has spread, and they continue to show incredible generosity, supporting two causes that are very close to my heart. “I’m returning to hosting my regular quizzes in local venues, but, as long as the demand is there, I’ll also continue to host virtual quizzes, with the aim of providing a bit of entertainment and raising money for good causes in the process.” Sophie Bewley, Fundraising Co-ordinator at Jigsaw South East said: “The funds Rob and his players have donated mean the world to us. Baby Boom at The Llama Park

Last year in July we bought a male llama stud from an Emu farm, of all places, in Hereford. He was quite hairy and had a sort of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;lionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; mane so we called him Leo.

He was quite small for a male llama and did not settle in very well and so we were quite disappointed as most of the ladies just ignored him and did not respond to his advances, or so we thought... .... until Sunday 19th July this year (a year to the day that we bought him) when late in the afternoon we discovered twin baby girl llamas, known as "crias", in a paddock with their mum Skye who is 9 years old. The birth of twins is exceptionally rare in 'camelids', 30,000 to 1 chance, so this was a major surprise to us and has made waves in the llama-world. One of the babies did not look well and so we got our lovely vet to have a look at her and some friends of ours who are local Alpaca breeders, Vicky and Chris Agar, provided us with some camelid plasma which was given to 'Spotty' and she has been doing very well ever since.

We called her sister 'Polo' and 'Spotty' has been renamed 'Beth' after one of our lovely livestock girls. Then to our great surprise on Tuesday 21st (just two days later) we had a third birth. The mother is 'Lulu' who is also 9 years old. This was another little girl 'cria' who we have named 'Farah' after a dear friend of ours. Well, we thought, that is amazing as we had not expected anything from Leo and had thought he was shooting blanks. But no, he was not! On Wednesday 22nd July Skye's daughter, Rain who is 3 years old, gave birth to a very strong and handsome little boy who has been named Willy after another of our livestock staff. By now Leo has become something of a famous stud so we determined to give him a

2 0 BABY BOOM AT THE LLAMA PARK CONTINUED name change to 'Casanova' see him in one of the photos after having been to the hairdresser on July 28th and now he looks like what he is, a real stud. Now we had four baby llamas which we had not expected and Casanova is now worth a fortune... However, the story does not end there as on Saturday 1st August another one of our lady llamas, Rhea, who is 12 years old and the biggest of the female llamas (so no pushover for a small stud like Casanova) gave birth to yet another very pretty female cria who has yet to be named but has very nice 'white socks'. So, we all asked, is Rhea the last of Casanova's lady friends to give birth? No! And so we had number "Six" as she is now called, while we think of a better

name. Six is beautiful and so lively and just like the youngest sister in a family running around making trouble and really enjoying herself. She races about and all the other babies follow her annoying the mothers. We still have four females who have not (as yet anyway) fallen to the charms of Casanova so who knows what might happen next. At the park we have a very big marquee with socially distanced tables. We are using this as our restaurant for now. All the food and drinks are served in disposable containers. Llama walks are now being carried out and the playground and bouncy castle are available for all the little ones. The shop is also open by appointment and we have a good range of gifts and toys.

EAST GRINSTEAD MERIDIAN ROTARY CLUB

The recent sad news came through of the closure of the original Rotary Club in the town. The Meridian Rotary Club, which has served the town for 35 years, continues on as usual, providing support to the many local and further afield charities. If it is possible, all the Christmas cheer they bring to the town and surrounding communities will continue this year.

Although entries for the annual rotary ‘Design a Plate’ competition were inevitably restricted, 300 children from three primary schools did take part. Judging was carried out by the Rotarians using zoom. The individual school winners were: Tilly (Year 3 Lingfield), Eleanor (Year 3 St. Mary’s) and Maria (Year 4 Blackwell). Maria was the overall winner receiving £50 for her school. All the winners will recreate their designs on a dinner plate thanks to Doodledish Pottery, Lingfield. The winning designs are shown below.

To raise funds at this difficult time, Meridian Rotary had a 30-day challenge for their members and family to walk a cumulative distance of 30 marathons collectively. Amazingly, they completed 82 marathons and raised nearly £10,000.

Last month the railway resumed running steam trains which coincided with its 60th birthday celebration. Part of the celebrations included e-greetings cards recorded by railway enthusiasts and transport organisations such as, TV presenter Sir Tony Robinson, TV presenter and Bluebell volunteer Nicholas Owen, toy manufacturer Hornby and the London Transport Museum. Bluebell Railway chairman Chris Hunford welcomed

volunteers and visitors back to the Sheffield Park station. Founders who started running the steam trains again, all those years ago, were present. In a ceremony to mark the reopening after a 20-week closure, Mr. Hunford said: "It was on this very spot 60 years ago – on 7th August 1960 – that the first passenger train left this station as the dream of railway enthusiasts to operate their own line came true. They were pioneers of the heritage railway movement, paving the way for groups across the country to open disused lines and run standard gauge preserved railways." He added, "The Bluebell

Railway has seen sixty years of progress – we’ve overcome obstacles, extended our track, reopened stations and been able to connect to the mainline at East Grinstead and developed into a major tourist attraction. This

Young Bluebell enthusiast and guest of honour One train-mad youngster who gave all his saved-up pocket money to save the steam railway he loves had the honour of waving the green flag to see off the first train as the line reopened. Six-year-old Alex Venton was a special guest and blew the whistle as trains began running again on the 60th anniversary re-opening day. Alex has been keen on trains since the age of two and is a member of the Bluebell Railway’s club for juniors. Many locals will know that the Bluebell, which is not-for-profit, launched an emergency appeal in March to provide enough money to recover from the closure and retain key heritage skills in the area. Alex read about the appeal in the railway’s newsletter and decided to give all his saved-up money (he wanted to buy a new coach for his collection) to the appeal instead. Trevor Swainson, the funding organiser, said: “We were touched that Alex had emptied his money box

Elton John fans chance to recreate album cover It’s been a long time coming, but now you can tell everybody there is the chance to follow in the footsteps of Sir Elton John and be pictured in the same spot as one of his album covers. It’s been many years since the singer visited the Bluebell for the cover of his 1970 album Tumbleweed Connection, when he and Bernie Taupin were photographed by Ian Digby Ovens, with the Victorian station used to inspire the album's rural Americana concept.

“They proceeded to take photos with the gentleman sat in the exact spot Elton sat. It’s exactly 50 years since the album was released and we are celebrating 60 years, so we thought it would be a good idea to encourage Elton's fans to come and take their picture at the scene.” The museum team painstakingly reset the enamel signs that were outside the building in 1970 in the exact positions and cleaned them ready for the photo opportunity. These include signs for Sunlight soap, Rowntree’s chocolates, Mazawattee tea, Shelvey’s mineral waters and Rajah cigars. The Nestle’s milk chocolate

Visitors have now started recreating the album cover and the Bluebell is encouraging them to share their images on social media. Tumbleweed Connection was Elton John’s third studio album and it reached No. 2 in the UK album charts. Sir Elton is one of many singers who have visited or used the Bluebell’s period stations for promotional filming. Others include Cilla Black, Ringo Starr, Sheena Easton and the Pet Shop Boys. Further, the railway is known as “The Line to the Stars” because hundreds of films, TV programmes, music videos and advertisements have used it as a backdrop; among them, Downton Abbey, Poirot, Muppets Most Wanted and The Woman in Black.
