“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

VJ DAY

August 15th 1945 by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Museum Although most people in England breathed a sigh of relief when the war in Europe ended on May 8th 1945, the war in the Far East continued for a further three months. This period must have been almost unbearable for family and friends of those still serving in that region. Those men were given the name “The Forgotten Army”. One person who did not forget them was Vera Lynn, who most will know sadly passed away recently at the age of one hundred and three. She realised that the majority of entertainers who went to boost the morale of the service men and women, only went to the European theatres of war. Very few even contemplated the long and hazardous journey to the Far East, let alone brave the hot and humid conditions to be found there. Vera did, and earned the soubriquet of “The Force’s Sweetheart”. Japan had entered the war by invading French Indo-China in 1940 and dramatically drew the United States of America into the fray by bombing Pearl Harbour in December 1941. The United Kingdom and its main allies, China, India, Australia and the

Pupils of the East Grinstead County Grammar School on VJ Day Netherlands, now had the might of America behind them. Battles were fought at sea and in the air. The Japanese kami-khazi pilots who committed suicide by aiming their planes at enemy ships, has seen echoes of their fanaticism in the suicide bombers of today. Arguably, the land battles were more horrendous. The terrain was largely impenetrable jungle. The heat, the insects, the wild animals, the snakes and disease were worse than the enemy itself. There was not only the fear of death from one of the causes, but fear of capture. If caught, the Japanese were renowned for their brutality. Most Prisoner of War camps were short of food. Even prisoners working on the notorious railway that the Japanese were forcing through the

jungle to expedite their supplies getting to the front, were starved of rations. Their ordeal was vividly brought to the screen in the film, ”Bridge over the River Kwai”. Over eighty-two thousand allies were killed in the region and 200 thousand more were made prisoners of war. Few of them survived. Fortunately for the residents of East Grinstead, very few of their service men were sent to the Far East. Of the two hundred and two names on the Second World War Roll of Honour for the town, only two men died outside Europe. Signalman Cecil Morris, who was the husband of Selina Morris of East Grinstead, died on January 25th 1944. He was buried in Chunkai War Cemetery, in Thailand. This cemetery is

Commemorative stamp for the 25th anniversary of VJ Day only three miles west of the main camp used to house the workers on the River Kwai. It can be presumed that he died building the railway and bridge. Karl Underwood whose wife, Vera, lived in East Grinstead died on March 18th 1945, in Burma, now known as Myanmar. His body lies in the Taukkyan War Cemetery there. The only other person who is known to have served in “The Forgotten Army”, is Arthur Groombridge, of the RASC. He survived the war, only to be tragically killed in a road accident in Redhill in October 1945. The end of the war in the Far East was hastened by the dropping of two atomic

Since 1945 many local wars have been fought. Vietnam and Korea, for instance. However, these conflicts did not lead to global wars, so perhaps the Second World War finished the work that the first had begun. Our relations with Germany, Italy and Japan have evolved into cooperation and peace. The sacrifice of all those, on both sides, has been justified. Long may this state of affairs, continue.

bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. American planes dropped the first bomb on Hiroshima on August 6th. In spite of the horrific loss of life the Japanese did not, immediately, surrender. Three days later on the August the 9th, a second atomic bomb was dropped, this time on Nagasaki. On August 15th Japan finally capitulated. The official instrument of surrender was signed on September 2nd, a cause for rejoicing throughout the world. Thankfully, these two bombs are the only nuclear weapons to have been used to date. The full horrors of the radiation, which was the aftermath of their use, was not realised until well after the events.

Kick star t youitrh a Summer w

The annual Sleep Out and Street Collection organised by the EG Justice and Peace Group in aid of local homeless charities had to be cancelled. This event would have been our 30th Sleep Out and raised about £4500 through sponsorship and donations in collecting tins. Over the last 30 years the group has raised in excess of £125,000. The recipient groups are Crawley Open House, The Easter Team and Turning Tides. Turning Tides provides a variety of services many of which are accessed through contact at St Clare's Community Hub in Worthing supporting 1100 people each year; it has four accommodation projects one of which is in East Grinstead. An outreach worker, Karen Gordon (07395 790029), liaises with local organisations such as EG Foodbank to help the homeless and marginalised. Further information of Sussex Turning Tides fundraising project is given below. Please help if you can (information about EG Justice and Peace Group is available from Susan Joy, 01342 835190. SusanJoy471@ hotmail.com). Raise money, save lives in aid of Turning Tides: Involve your family and friends and be a ‘Home Hero’ by taking part in your very own summer time adventure. This August brings you the fantastic ‘Big Summer SleepOut’ to raise money in aid of Turning Tides who support local homeless

men and women across West Sussex. It is open to everyone and completely free to join in and you choose your location. Give up your bed for one night on Saturday 8th August and choose an alternative location to sleep – in your garden under the stars, in a specially built den, in the loft or in the bath! By sleeping out somewhere new you will help to raise awareness and money for homeless people. Rope in as many friends and family as you can – get your street involved and plan your own activities and entertainment - and have your own safe, socially distanced SleepOut that will make a massive social difference. There is a best dressed den competition and an online activity programme packed with fun and entertainment. Sleeping rough takes an extreme toll on a person. Homeless people die on average 30 years sooner than the general population. Just £85 raised, pays for a full day of emergency support for a homeless person. We are really hoping people will feel moved to join. For details see the bigsummersleepout2020.eventbrite.co.uk

Gardens

Food for the Soul

Dear Readers, I’m sure you know that the gardens that usually open for the National Garden Scheme have been closed for most of the summer, due to the pandemic. Last month saw quite a few begin to open their garden gates for prebooked visits. At this time of writing, this month will see Penns in the Rocks near Groombridge open for 5 consecutive afternoons between 2pm and 5pm for pre-booked appointment times only. The dates are Monday 17th to Friday 21st August. There will be no refreshments served but you will be able to take your own picnic and sit on the tables and chairs provided in the courtyard. Rapkyns Nursery from Heathfield will be on hand selling plants. Tickets for these visits will be available to purchase on the website, www.ngs.org.uk from first thing on Monday 10th August for the early part of

the week tickets and again from Monday 17th August for the end of that week. You will be able to book a 30-minute timeslot but will be able to stay as long as you want up until the 5pm closing time. Just log on select your timeslot, pay by card and either print your ticket or produce evidence on your mobile phone (also, see our article about William Penn for more historical information about this fascinating estate). ‘East Grinstead Town Gardens’ sees six gardens opening on Sunday 16th August: 7 Nightingale Close, 16 Musgrave Avenue, 27 & 29 Mill Way, 35 Dorset Avenue and the Imberhorne Allotments. Established gardens, displaying a mix of planting: shrubs, perennials, dahlias, annuals, tubs and baskets. Three are past winners of EG in Bloom Best Front Garden.16 Musgrave Avenue has a thriving vegetable garden: 7 Nightingale Close is on heavy clay in a frost pocket going down to a stream

(no access), plus a potager and collection of bonsai. 35 Dorset Avenue has an eclectic mix of garden rooms and soft fruit. Imberhorne Allotments consist of 80 plots with a diverse mix of plantings: grape vines, fruit, flowers and a community orchard. Limited teas will be served at Musgrave Avenue and there will be plant sales at some properties. Full details and tickets on sale on the website on Monday 10th August. In the event that other garden owners in the area decide to open, you can check every Monday morning on the scheme’s website for updates. The scheme has been promoting a number of gardens “virtual tours” through the summer months too, all of which can also be viewed on their website. They have also been running a campaign to help support our nurses and to date have raised over £100,000. If you would like to donate look for the DONATE button on their homepage. Geoff Stonebanks

Five Kitchen Design Trends

You’ll Want On Your Wishlist By Rachael Workman, Kitchens Bespoke

This summer is not exactly panning out how we had planned! What we can do with all this time at home, is make sure it is the ideal multipurpose space it now needs to be. Maximise your staycation at home and make it an oasis to work, rest and play in. We’ve rounded up our favourite trends and our most requested kitchen design ideas to inspire your renovations.

Worktops We love the strong veining design in our quartz worktop range. These striking patterns create drama and sophistication in your kitchen design. Choose a strongly veined worktop to take it from merely a practical feature, to a practical and beautiful statement piece. Quartz not only looks fabulous but is less porous than granite, and can cope with hot pots and pans placed directly onto it.

Make a statement with colour and features Veined worktops, pops of colour and alternative finishes on fixtures and fittings are really growing in popularity right now.

Team up your veined quartz worktop with a strong statement colour on your units. Your kitchen will look fabulous with this contrast.

FIVE KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS CONTINUED

If you are ready for an injection of colour in your kitchen, we are seeing a real rise in popularity for dark inky greens and heathery purples. Blue remains as popular as ever with no sign of abating. For these inky atmospheric greens, we love Farrow & Ball’s Calke or Studio. This tone of green looks absolutely stunning when paired with veined quartz worktops and brass handles on the units.

Fixtures & fittings Sinks and taps haven’t been limited to stainless steel for a long time but we’re seeing much more confidence from customers in making bolder choices with their textures and finishes. Copper or gold sinks and taps can really change the tone of a kitchen, and the matt black finishes available are so stylish. Be bold with your choice of finish on your sink and tap and accessorise with the handles on your furniture. This will really elevate your overall kitchen design.

Must-have gadgets Quooker CUBE Combination taps are here to stay and we love the recently launched Quooker CUBE for style & safety. If you’re fed up with using plastic bottles for your sparkling water, the Quooker CUBE accessory provides filtered chilled & sparkling water in addition to 100°C boiling, hot & cold water. It is a game changer and we are asked to install a Quooker on nearly every project. We have three Quookers in different finishes and styles on display in the showroom, plus the Quooker Cube. Pop in for a demo when you’re passing.

E.ion® System by Falmec We’ve loved Falmec extractor hoods for a long time. They look great and are so efficient. Falmec have now gone a step further and have launched an extractor system which actually sanitises the air in your kitchen. The E.ion® System cooker hoods release ions similar to those present in the atmosphere, into your kitchen and effectively neutralise odours, irritants and pollutants, including bacteria, viruses, mites, pollens, spores, dust, noxious fumes or exhaust gases. This is a next level kitchen appliance and in the current climate couldn’t be more timely. This feels like a kitchen must-have for 2020.

WILLIAM PENN William Penn, the founder of the Pennsylvania, lived a good deal of his life in this part of Sussex with properties in both nearby Groombridge (Penns in the Rocks) and at Warminghurst, near Horsham. The history of his life is rich and fascinating and he was certainly not influential simply because he was born to aristocracy. He emphatically went ‘against the grain’ and forged new paths; he was what we call today, a trendsetter. We attempt to shed a little light on this special man, though his eventful life could no doubt fill a tome. His early years were set in the backdrop of political and monarchical upheavals. King Charles I had been executed for treason and Oliver Cromwell was in power as Lord Protector. His father had been awarded lands in Ireland (seized from Catholics) by Cromwell for defending the Commonwealth on the high seas as an accomplished admiral. The young Penn was educated at Chigwell School, then by private tutors whilst in Ireland, and later attended Oxford. His education leaned heavily on the classical authors, where even Shakespeare was viewed as ‘frivolous’. As was the order of the day in the puritanical/anglican mode of Cromwellian times his schooling was strict, humourless, and sombre – teachers had to be pillars of virtue. Though he later opposed his religious upbringing, Penn was noted to have absorbed many Puritan behaviours such as a serious demeanour and strict behaviour – let us not forget, Cromwell and the Puritans banned all Christmas revelry! In fact, Penn was an early adherent of the Quaker movement and spent much of his adult life propagating the new religion - little did he know that he would one day be placed on every packet of Quaker Oats, such was his devotion. He was merely 15 when the Quaker missionary Thomas Loe, much maligned by

Catholics and Protestants alike, visited the Penn household in Ireland for discourses about ‘inner light’, Penn later recalled that ‘the Lord visited me and gave me divine impressions of himself’. After the death of Oliver Cromwell, Admiral Penn (William’s father) was sent on a secret mission to bring back the exiled Prince Charles, soon to be Charles II. For his role in restoring the monarchy, the admiral was knighted and gained a powerful position as commissioner of the navy. He had high hopes for his son, which were soon to be dashed when Penn was expelled from Oxford for rebelling against religious conformity. Although viewed as a ‘Cavalier’ (aristocratic Anglican) due to his father’s high station, his sympathies always lay with the Quakers who viewed, ‘all men as equal’ and he rallied against any religious authoritarianism. His parents sent him away to France for ‘cultural refinement’ in the hope that his rebellious temperament might calm itself. It didn’t. Apparently, though, he was noted

WILLIAM PENN CONTINUED be known, refused to bow or take off their hats to social superiors, believing all men equal under god. Quite the rebels, they also failed to pay tithes and refused to swear oaths of loyalty to the king believing that this was following the command of Jesus not to swear. In fact, these early Quakers such as Penn, established one of the most important principles of modern political history, the rights of the individual, such would ultimately influence the US constitution in years to come.

Admiral Sir William Penn, 1621–1670 to always retain certain French manners of dressing and demeanour in later years. When he returned, he attended law school and then assisted his father with admiral duties. However, this harmonious familial state was soon squashed when young Penn, having been arrested for attending Quaker meetings, rather than backing away, decided to fully convert to Quakerism at age 22, much to his father’s dismay who shortly disinherited his son and turned him out of the house. Charles II had come down hard on the many Christian denominations which had been springing up during the post-civil-war years, and Quakers were not spared. Penn started living with Quaker families. Devotees, or ‘Friends’ as they liked to

Penn became the first theorist and legal defender of Quakerism, but it was his branding of the Catholic Church as, "the Whore of Babylon" and Puritans, as "hypocrites and revellers in God" that really got him into trouble. The Bishop of London ordered he be held in solitary confinement until he publicly recanted. Threatened with a life sentence, Penn responded, "My prison shall be my grave

before I will budge a jot: for I owe my conscience to no mortal man.” After his release, 8 months later, he was effectively exiled from high society. Arrested again in 1670, he was put on trial and the jury found him ‘not guilty’. When the judge asked them to reconsider their verdict, the jury refused and were sent to a cell over several nights to ‘mull over their decision’. The Lord Mayor sent Penn to Newgate Prison and the full jury followed him! The members of the jury fought their case from prison in what became known as Bushel's Case, and managed to win the right for all English juries to be free from the control of judges: a judicial first. Having been married for a few years by then, Penn took up residence in Warminghurst near Horsham with his wife in 1676 Gulielma Maria Posthuma Springett whose family home and dowry was

2 8 WILLIAM PENN CONTINUED ‘Penn’s in the rocks’ near Groombridge. Penn opened up his house for local Quaker meetings. Years later in 1691 he helped to buy a property at nearby Coolham, which established a proper meeting house, subsequently known as the ‘Blue Idol’; this famous building is still used to this day as a place of Quaker worship and receives many visitors, often from the United States, who come to savour the atmosphere. Penn’s father’s life was nearing its end and the admiral wanted to make peace with his son; in the end, he had come to respect his integrity. He secured a personal favour from the king for the safety of William’s future. The admiral wrote to the Duke of York, the successor to the throne, who promised to retain him as a ‘royal counsellor’. William did indeed inherit his fortune and, following another stint in jail, wrote to the king with a solution to the problem of religious turmoil: he planned a mass emigration of English Quakers to the new world. Thus in 1677, Penn and a group of prominent devotees purchased the colonial province of West Jersey and in 1682, they bought East Jersey to make it New Jersey. In 1677 a huge open-air meeting was held, attracting several hundred people, at Warminghurst Place. It was here in Sussex that Penn drafted a constitution for their new state, which

included the qualities of equality of all men and religious freedom - this would eventually form the basis for the Constitution of the United States. When Penn would leave England in 1682 for his first visit to America, he took with him many Quakers from this local Sussex area, including at least 16 from Billingshurst. Unsatisfied with one American colonial state, Penn pressed his case to extend the Quaker region and to Penn's surprise, the king granted an extraordinarily generous charter which made Penn the world's largest private (non-royal) landowner; this may have come from sympathy for the young upstart or perhaps more likely, a nostalgic thought to the late Penn senior. The land was 45,000 square miles and Penn became the sole proprietor, gaining sovereign rule with all rights and privileges. With this offering, the crown was also freed of a debt to the old admiral of

£16,000, equal to £2,463,355 today! Penn first called the area "New Wales", and then "Sylvania" (Latin for "forests" or "woods"), which King Charles II changed to "Pennsylvania" in honour of the elder Admiral Penn. In 1681, the king signed the charter and the following day Penn jubilantly wrote, "It is a clear and just thing, and my god who has given it to me through many difficulties, will, I believe, bless and make it the seed of a nation”, little did he know how close to the truth this would be. Penn in fact embarked on a religious melting pot experiment with Pennsylvania, he proclaimed that he would not exploit either the natives or the immigrants. As well as Quakers, his ‘safe land’ attracted other persecuted minorities including Huguenots, Amish, Jews and more, from across the UK and Europe. He set out to lay the legal framework for a

3 0 WILLIAM PENN CONTINUED society where power was derived from the people, from "open discourse", in much the same way as a Quaker meeting was run. In terms of religious freedom, there is no doubt the influence this would later have on the fledging United States.

Lockdown Life East Grinstead Museum needs your help to document life during lockdown, in our town.

There is much about the history of Penn’s dealings with his new colonial states, including territorial disputes and being betrayed by a business partner who took advantage of Penn not reading ‘the small print’. However, it is too much for this article and we have run out of space.

Send us your photographs or short films of daily life, stories of local individuals who have made a difference, creative works inspired, acts of kindness or even a short diary entry. Perhaps your street held amazing NHS claps or threw a fantastic socially-distanced VE day 75 anniversary celebration? We are keen to collect any rainbows pictures to form part of a new collection.

As a final word, Penn spent subsequent years writing and promoting his faith. In 1691, ‘The Blue Idol’, was given the green light for Quaker sermons by the king himself, when Penn received assurances that he could preach without persecution; Penn became an itinerant preacher and an author. He finally sold his estate in 1707 and today nothing exists of the house, as the purchaser, James Butler, was determined ‘not to leave a trace’. But the Blue Idol is still a centre for local Quakers, with about 30-40 members attending.

The museum plans to create an exhibition documenting how COVID-19 impacted life in East Grinstead and the surrounding villages. We hope the experience and later coming together as a town to look and listen to some of these, will be helpful as we reflect back on and try to make sense of the past few months, while leaving a legacy for future generations seeking to understand this moment in our history. It is also a special opportunity to thank individuals and community groups who have made a difference. We are keen to capture diverse experiences, sad or joyful, and to reflect East Grinstead's diversity. Contributions are welcomed from people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

Penn’s greatest legacy of course, extends much farther than the Blue Idol in Sussex. Across the seas, to the land which would later become the world’s greatest superpower and the first bastion of true religious freedom of expression.
