Our readers may or may not be aware of a major and very popular sportive cycling event that has happened in the Ashdown Forest area since 2013 called, ‘The Hell of the Ashdown’, now HOTA. It’s billed as ‘the best cycling sportive in the south’ and is hosted by the Kent based Catford cycling club - one of the oldest CC’s in the world. The club decided they wanted a very challenging and hilly,

yet beautiful spot for their fundraising event and picked this part of the south as, in the words of the organisers it has, ‘the loveliest of views’. Since that time, the event has booked out incredibly fast to its full capacity of now 1500 cyclists. The route is 107km, starting at Biggin Hill, going towards Hever and then south through Ashurst wood and towards Ashdown Forest and encompasses the

notoriously stubborn Kidds Hill, colloquially known as THE WALL, before turning back north towards Sevenoaks. It is well known in cycling circles and has ‘hit the cycling press’ many times in recent years, praised by riders for its good organisation and challenging ‘hellish’, yet satisfying route. We contacted the organisers recently for 2020 details which they don’t have yet, as this goes to print! However, if this is of interest to any local cyclists who live in the very area this highly-coveted event takes place in, then keep your eye’s peeled on the website as the spaces go like wildfire. And Good Luck!

NEW: Experience Wakehurst with a four-legged friend

This September Wakehurst will be welcoming dogs into the gardens for the first time on a trial basis, taking place on Monday 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th September from 10am to 6pm. Visitors will have the chance to walk their four-legged friends on a lead in the gardens and woodlands; there will be a designated route to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the wild botanic garden.

Visitors arriving with their dogs can pick up a map at the Visitor Centre that will show the paths they can follow, taking in the Temperate Woodlands, Westwood Lake and views across the Loder Valley. Up to two dogs per adult visitor will be welcome. During the trial Wakehurst will be hoping to get feedback from visitors.

Bonfire Season is hotting up

which village or town they have come from. However, societies often incorporate other fancy dress into their midst, such as Tudors, Vikings, jesters...there have been a multitude of costumes across the years.

© Jackie Love

This Sussex tradition does not just mark the event of Guy Fawkes' attempt to blow up Parliament, but has a number of roots which stem back over 100 years prior. During the autumn/winter months, field workers had little or no money or food to see them through. A tradition sprung up of going door to door to ask for food and drink, however, begging was against the law, so the workers would dress themselves up and smudge their faces with charcoal to avoid being identified, then go round to local establishments (such as inns) to try to obtain money, food or alcohol. These occasions could become quite raucous and much revelry would take place, but with people dressed up there was less chance of being 'picked out'. This was emulated some years later, when the Lewes Bonfire Boys and Belles would dress up in order to avoid being detected by the authorities, who were trying to close down the festivities on November 5th! People attending bonfire events today will notice that the societies all have their own 'smuggler's' outfit - consisting of stripey jumpers, white trousers, hat, and many still have the smudge of charcoal upon them. Each society jumpers are unique - marking out

Bonfire connects to the reign of 'Bloody Mary', the first daughter of Henry VIII, a devout Catholic. As we know, Henry VIII renounced the Catholic church and instated himself as head of the Anglican church, to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn – in truth there were already many murmurings of Protestantism afoot across Europe, spearheaded by John Calvin and Martin Luther. In later years, when Mary seized the throne from Lady Jane Grey, she fought to reinstate the Catholic religion. Thus, in around 1555, the persecution of protestants began in earnest, with charges of heresy; many martyrs were made and Sussex as a county, was dealt an especially harsh blow. Then in 1605 Guy Fawkes attempted the infamous gunpowder plot, with a group of English Catholics. What followed was a yearly remembrance of this event, and added to this in Sussex were special services to mark the Sussex martyrs. In many of the Sussex villages and towns in this area in particular, there were Protestant

martyrs who were killed under the reign of Bloody Mary and if you see burning crosses during bonfire processions, they mark specific people who have died at the stake. In Rotherfield there are 3 such martyrs represented each by a burning cross - Alexander Hosman, Anne Ashdown (or Aston) and John Ashdown. Lewes commemorates 17 martyrs during their annual event. Commemorating the martyrs’ loyalty to their faith very much echoes the motto of Sussex, ‘We Wunt be Druv’ (meaning we won’t be pushed around and told what to do!). By the mid-late 19th century these raucous events began to turn into more organised events, run by bonfire societies. The first recollection of Rotherfield & Mark Cross Bonfire dates back to 1906, with the real true event being reported in 1910. It initially disbanded in WW1 and was then reinstated up until WW2. It was then not until 1969 that the society started back up. Since then, the event has grown and grown over the years, with it a true staple of the village's yearly calendar. Bonfire society events take

place between September to November - this is due to the number across Sussex and each will have their own way of celebrating. Some have 'Bonfire Carnivals', as is ours and Crowborough’s, which are a much more family focused affair, whilst others focus solely on bonfire - where things can be a little rowdier! All societies support one another, by attending the various events taking place during the season and walking within the processions. At some events bangers (rooks) are let off something very notable at Lewes and then at the end

Bonfire societies have to work tirelessly to fund their areas' event - it costs thousands to put these processions on and continue to mark this hundreds-of-years-old Sussex tradition. An array of events are held during the year to raise funds: Easter egg hunt, summer events, Christmas carol concerts, lunch for senior citizens, quiz nights, etc. To put on this yearly event, the true support of volunteers is needed. There is the torchmaking for a start, within Rotherfield around 3 - 4000 torches need to be handmade ready for the procession and then just prior to the actual event they get 'dipped' to make them ready for burning on the night - this takes a lot of time! On the night itself volunteers are required to help marshal the route - to

Bonfire is a true lifestyle for many people - it is imperative that this special Sussex tradition is kept going. There is nothing more enjoyable than walking the streets with burning torches, being a part of something that holds its roots back hundreds of years and of which there is almost nothing else like it that takes place in the whole country.

ensure complete safety of both the public and those walking in the procession. Volunteers are also required to be 'bucket collectors' - a key part is raising funds for local charities. In Rotherfield 2-3 local charities are selected each year and all money raised from the street collection will be split equally across these charities.

Local Lad hits the Big Big time! Will Bayley MBE, the gold winning table tennis Paralympian, who grew up in Groombridge, was named as a contestant for Strictly Come Dancing this year. As the exciting news broke, Will said: “I’m so proud to be on the show, it’s my family’s favourite show. I have no dance experience at all, but I hope I can do well. I want to inspire people with a disability - that would mean a lot to me. I want to prove to people I can do this.” Will is currently training to defend his Paralympic

title at the Tokyo 2020 games, he recently won gold at the Japan Open 2019. Will has suffered from arthrogryposis since birth, a rare condition which affects all four of his limbs. He also survived cancer when he was a child and was introduced to table tennis by his grandmother as a way of distracting him from his gruelling treatment. As a local lad we hope all our readers keep an extra eye out for his dance moves on our screens this year and support him. Best of luck Will!

hand dived scallops, red pepper peanut dressing Serves 4

By Alex Floyd, Pastry Chef, Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

For the curried parsnip purée • 250g parsnip, peeled and chopped • 5g curry powder • 5g ground coriander • 4g ground cumin • 1 pinch ground turmeric, small • vegetable oil • 50 ml milk • 50 ml double cream • Salt Place a saucepan over a medium heat and add a dash of vegetable oil, followed by the parsnips and spices. Reduce the heat and cook for 40 minutes, or until the parsnips start to soften. Add the cream and milk, bring to a simmer and cook for a further 5 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat, transfer the contents of the pan to a blender and blitz on full speed until a smooth purée forms. Transfer the purée to a clean saucepan and season to taste with salt. Cover with a cartouche until ready to reheat and serve.

For the peanut dressing • • • •

400 ml rapeseed oil 150g peanut 150g red pepper Mix ingredients together.

For the scallops • 12 scallops, large • vegetable oil • salt

Make sure the scallops are cleaned and stored in the refrigerator on a clean tea towel or J-cloth before cooking. To prepare the scallops, cut each in half to form 2 rounds and season lightly with salt. Meanwhile, begin to reheat the parsnip purée.

until golden brown on each side. Repeat to cook the rest of the scallops. To plate Arrange spoonful of the parsnip purée around each plate, then top each mound of purée with a scallop half. One can garnish with crispy parsnips, caviar and micro cress and drizzle over the peanut dressing. Serve immediately.

Place a frying pan over a high heat and add a dash of vegetable oil. Once the pan is almost smoking, add a few of the scallops, making sure you do not overcrowd the pan, as this will cause them to stew and not sear and caramelise. Sear the scallops on each side for 30-45 seconds or

Dear Sariah, I know this is a dilemma all parents face but my son has gone from being a really sweet boy to having an extreme case of teenage-itis... he pretty much refuses to clean his room, seems to do what he pleases, we manage to get him to do a couple of small jobs every now and again with much effort.. every request is met with an eye roll and then tempers flare. Any helpful suggestions would be welcome! – Rachel F.

As for the little jobs you’d like him to do, negotiation is key. Explain how important his contribution to running the house is and perhaps give him specific weekly responsibilities, such as unstacking the dishwasher, walking the dog, etc. It’s not unreasonable to expect him to do at least one job a day. I’m going to assume that he has

a mobile phone, perhaps access to a games console. These can be excellent bargaining tools for parents who struggle to get children to contribute to household chores. If you are constantly met with defiance when asking for his help, explain that those things are luxury items that can be removed temporarily if needs be. In my home, the weekly allowance is attributed to chores. No chores = no money. Teenagers can be tricky. That’s the truth. They need firm boundaries and open conversations. Often, a rational discussion about why you’re asking them to do something is all you need. Whilst it's often hard not to engage in bickering with a belligerent teen, try to remain the adult. Love them, laugh with them and don’t unstack the dishwasher if you’ve asked him to do it. Just turn off the WiFi if he refuses.

SUDOKUS

Hi. You haven’t mentioned how old your son is but I’m going to assume he is an actual teenager. By definition, many teenagers struggle to see beyond their own world and are often difficult to negotiate with when you’re asking them to do something that they don’t feel they need to do. My first piece of advice regarding teenagers is to pick your battles. It’s easy to feel like you are constantly asking them to do something and being met with deaf ears or petulant attitude but it can also, from their perspective, feel like you are constantly on their back. The teenage years are often tricky to negotiate, so you need to think about what is really important in terms of boundaries and respect. The first battle that I would let go is your son’s room. I know this can be difficult to do but it’s his space and it can be helpful to respect that space. If he wants to sleep in a messy room, ask yourself why this bothers you? Often it is about control. If you can, try stepping away from the control of his room and leave him to it. Occasionally you may have to ask him to collect up the towels or bring down some plates but privacy and ownership in a bedroom is really important to teenagers.

Stylist This month we are very pleased to bring you an exclusive Autumn style guide, from award-winning personal stylist Susie Hasler.

© Mollie Rae Manning

Susie runs ‘Styled by Susie’ with up-to-date style advice across the seasons to her many followers on social media.

Last month, East Grinstead-based, 36-year-old Susie made national press when she posted to her many Instagram followers, explaining how she came to the rescue of a teenager trying on sunglasses whose friend was grabbing passers-by to get them to tell the teenager how terrible she looked in the glasses. Susie soon set things straight by offering her own style advice of how great the glasses looked and encouraging her to buy them if her gut feeling was a yes!

SUITS:

Here are some of her latest tips for the Autumn 2019 trends:

The catwalks have been increasingly non-binary. With that in mind, there are more unisex lines being introduced and the silhouettes this season reflect that.

It’s time to say goodbye to shorts and sandals, Autumn is just around the corner!

The beauty of buying a trouser suit is you can get different styles out of it.

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the emerging trends to see what patterns are forming - so, say hello to statement bags, neon shoes, feathers and (yes!) double denim.

Switch out trainers for loafers or brogues and wear it as a set - or use the jacket with a pair of jeans for a smart, casual look.

As always, you can skip a trend or jump on it, depending on your preference.

Or you can wear the trousers with a fine-knit jumper with loafers or brogues and a biker jacket.

Here’s how to wear them with confidence.

FEATHERS: I’ll be leaving this trend alone - I can just imagine getting my feathers matted on a drizzly school run! Keep an eye out for feathers on shoes (very Nineties) and on Christmas party frocks. It’s lovely to see some designers creating synthetic feathers to keep their lines cruelty free. Others have been sourcing feathers that have naturally molted.

STATEMENT BAGS: Big bags are flattering if you’re curvy - but my favourite thing about them is how much I can fit into them. Choose prints or patterns to jazz up a dark winter coat, or a neutral hue to complement more outfits.

TARTAN:

WAIST BELTS:

Nineties’ grunge isn’t leaving anytime soon! Tartan looks great with thick black tights and ankle boots. If you love the rock chick style, branch out with Dr Marten boots or studded biker ones.

These went out of fashion a few years ago but they are back with a bang. I’ve always loved adding a belt to my outfits as it gives my shape definition. You can have fun with a thin belt or thick one, or even a chain style!

DOUBLE DENIM: Is that the sound of B*Witched playing? Yes, double denim is back, particularly the darker shades of denim such as indigo and black. With this in mind, you can keep wearing those denim boiler suits throughout the winter months - pop an extra layer underneath to keep you cosy.

NEON SHOES: Hailey Bieber caught my eye with her neon heels, distressed jeans and blazer, earlier in the year. A pop of colour can make a dark winter outfit, and if you’re wearing a black dress to your Christmas do, let your feet do the talking with some brights.

LEATHER: Get those coated (or leather-look) jeans back out, because leather is here to stay! They’re a great alternative to skinny jeans. You can dress them down with a hoodie and trainers, or up for evening drinks with heels and a blouse. If you haven’t got one already, start looking out for a biker jacket next season - you can wear it with everything. I prefer pleather over leather, because I find it less bulky (and it’s cheaper).

POCKETS: I’ve kept the best one for last – pockets! So many clients leap with joy when they try on a dress with pockets. I love them because I’m so awkward, it’s somewhere to put my hands while I’m talking to someone. Pockets are getting a supersized makeover and you’ll see them on coats and blazers in particular.

WILLIAM PENN William Penn, the founder of the Pennsylvania, lived a good deal of his life in this part of Sussex with properties in both nearby Groombridge (Penns in the Rocks) and at Warminghurst, near Horsham. The history of his life is rich and fascinating and he was certainly not influential simply because he was born to aristocracy. He emphatically went ‘against the grain’ and forged new paths; he was, what we call today, a trendsetter. We attempt to shed a little light on this special man, though his eventful life could no doubt fill a tome! His early years were set in the backdrop of political and monarchical upheavals. King Charles I had been executed for treason and Oliver Cromwell was in power as Lord Protector. His father had been awarded lands in Ireland (seized from Catholics) by Cromwell for defending the Commonwealth on the high seas as an accomplished admiral. The young Penn was educated at Chigwell School, then by private tutors whilst in Ireland, and later attended Oxford. His education leaned heavily on the classical authors, where even Shakespeare was viewed as ‘frivolous’. As was the order of the day in the puritanical/Anglican mode of Cromwellian times his schooling was strict, humourless, and sombre – teachers had to be pillars of virtue. Though he later opposed his religious upbringing, Penn was noted to have absorbed many Puritan behaviours such as a serious demeanour and strict behaviour – it was the order of the day…let us not forget, Cromwell and the Puritans banned all Christmas revelry! In fact, Penn was of the early adherent of the Quaker movement and spent much of his adult life propagating the new religion - little did he know that he would one day be placed on every packet of Quaker Oats, such was his devotion. He was merely 15 when the Quaker missionary Thomas Loe, much maligned by

Catholics and Protestants alike, visited the Penn household in Ireland for discourses about ‘Inner Light’, Penn later recalled that ‘the Lord visited me and gave me divine impressions of himself’. After the death of Oliver Cromwell, Admiral Penn (William’s father) was sent on a secret mission to bring back the exiled Prince Charles, soon to be Charles II. For his role in restoring the monarchy, the admiral was knighted and gained a powerful position as Commissioner of the Navy. He had high hopes for his son, which were soon to be dashed when Penn was expelled from Oxford for rebelling against religious, Anglican conformity. Although viewed as a Cavalier (aristocratic Anglican) due to his father’s high station, his sympathies always lay with the Quakers who viewed, ‘all men as equal’ and he rallied against any religious authoritarianism. His parents sent him away to France for ‘cultural refinement’ in the hope that his rebellious temperament might calm itself. It didn’t. Apparently, though, he was noted

32 be known, refused to bow or take off their hats to social superiors, believing all men equal under God. Quite the rebels, they also failed to pay tithes and refused to swear oaths of loyalty to the King believing that this was following the command of Jesus not to swear. In fact, these early Quakers such as Penn, established one of the most important principles of modern political history, the rights of the individual, such would ultimately influence the US constitution in years to come. Admiral Sir William Penn, 1621–1670 to always retain certain French manners of dressing and demeanour in later years. When he returned, he attended law school and then assisted his father with admiral duties. However, this harmonious familial state was soon squashed when young Penn, having been arrested for attending Quaker meetings, rather than backing away, decided to fully convert to Quakerism at age 22, much to his father’s dismay who shortly disinherited his son and turned him out of the house. Charles II had come down hard on the many Christian denominations which had been springing up during the post-civil-war years, and Quakers were not spared. Penn started living with Quaker families. Devotees, or ‘Friends’ as they liked to

Penn became the first theorist and legal defender of Quakerism, but it was his branding of the Catholic Church, as "the Whore of Babylon" and Puritans, as "hypocrites and revellers in God" that really got him into trouble. The Bishop of London ordered he be held in solitary confinement until he publicly recanted. Threatened with a life sentence, Penn responded, "My prison shall be my grave

before I will budge a jot: for I owe my conscience to no mortal man.” After his release, 8 months later, he was effectively exiled from high society. Arrested again in 1670, he was put on trial and the jury found him ‘not guilty’. When the judge asked them to reconsider their verdict, the jury refused and were sent to a cell over several nights to ‘mull over their decision’. The Lord Mayor sent Penn to Newgate Prison and the full jury followed him! The members of the jury fought their case from prison in what became known as Bushel's Case, and managed to win the right for all English juries to be free from the control of judges: a judicial first. Having been married for a few years by then, Penn took up residence in Warminghurst near Horsham with his wife in 1676 Gulielma Maria Posthuma Springett whose family home and dowry was

34 ‘Penn’s in the rocks’ near Groombridge. Penn opened up his house for local Quaker meetings. Years later in 1691 he helped to buy a property at nearby Coolham, which established a proper Meeting House, subsequently known as the ‘Blue Idol’; this famous building is still used to this day as a place of Quaker worship and receives many visitors, often from the United States, who come to savour the atmosphere. Penn’s father’s life was nearing its end and the admiral wanted to make peace with his son; in the end, he had come to respect his integrity. He secured a personal favour from the King for the safety of William’s future. The admiral wrote to the Duke of York, the successor to the throne, who promised to retain him as a ‘royal counsellor’. William did indeed inherit his fortune and, following another stint in jail, wrote to the king with a solution to the problem of religious turmoil: he planned a mass emigration of English Quakers to the new world. Thus in 1677, Penn and a group of prominent devotees purchased the colonial province of West Jersey and in 1682, they bought East Jersey to make it New Jersey. In 1677 a huge open-air meeting was held, attracting several hundred people, at Warminghurst Place, it was here in Sussex that Penn drafted a constitution for their new state, which

included the qualities of equality of all men and religious freedom - this would eventually form the basis for the Constitution of the United States. When Penn would leave England in 1682 for his first visit to America, he took with him many Quakers from this local Sussex area, including at least 16 from the Billingshurst. Unsatisfied with one American colonial state, Penn pressed his case to extend the Quaker region and to Penn's surprise, the King granted an extraordinarily generous charter which made Penn the world's largest private (non-royal) landowner; this may have come from sympathy for the young upstart or perhaps more likely, a nostalgic thought to the late Penn senior. The land was 45,000 square miles and Penn became the sole proprietor, gaining sovereign rule with all rights and

privileges. With this offering, the crown was also freed of a debt to the old admiral of £16,000, equal to £2,463,355 today! Penn first called the area "New Wales", and then "Sylvania" (Latin for "forests" or "woods"), which King Charles II changed to "Pennsylvania" in honour of the elder Admiral Penn. In 1681, the King signed the charter and the following day Penn jubilantly wrote, "It is a clear and just thing, and my God who has given it to me through many difficulties, will, I believe, bless and make it the seed of a nation”, little did he know how close to the truth this would be! Penn in fact embarked on a religious melting pot experiment with Pennsylvania, he proclaimed that he would not exploit either the natives or the immigrants. As well as Quakers, his ‘safe land’ attracted other persecuted

He set out to lay the legal framework for a society where power was derived from the people, from "open discourse", in much the same way as a Quaker meeting was run. In terms of religious freedom, there is no doubt the influence this would later have on the fledging United States. There is much about the history of Penn’s dealings with his new colonial states, including territorial disputes and being betrayed by a business partner who took advantage of Penn not reading ‘the small print’. However, it is too much for this article and we have indeed run out of space! As a final word, Penn spent subsequent years

writing and promoting his faith. In 1691, ‘The Blue Idol’, was given the green light for Quaker sermons by the king himself, when Penn received assurances that he could preach without persecution; Penn became an itinerant preacher and an author. He finally sold his estate in 1707 and today nothing exists of the house, as the purchaser, James Butler, was determined ‘not to leave a trace’. But the Blue Idol is still a centre for local Quakers, with about 30-40 members attending. Penn’s greatest legacy of course, extends much farther than the Blue Idol in Sussex. Across the seas, to the land which would later become the world’s greatest superpower and the first bastion of true religious freedom of expression.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON

The end of year performance 2019 for the Lindfield based Gielgud Academy (GAPA) was recently celebrated with a production featuring over 150 pupils ranging from age 4 to 18 in a variety of dance genres and musical theatre numbers including newly choreographed Nutcracker divertissements, a Mary Poppins medley and a Masterchef Ballet. The last performance was attended by guests of honour Dame Beryl Grey, former Royal

Ballet Principal Alfreda Thorogood, star of stage and screen and 2018 Celebrity Masterchef winner John Partridge and former West End leading lady turned rock star Saffron from Republica. After the show, the VIPs awarded medals and cups for achievement in the annual GAPA prizegiving ceremony. This year the David Walls Boys scholarship went to Oscar Ward-Dutton, the Bush Davies Girls Ballet scholarship to Isabella Alice Evans, the

Pat Ellis award for modern and tap was presented to Madeleine Wrigley and Sophie Gray won the Paul Heard Musicality award. A new cup was announced for an outstanding dancer, in honour of GAPA’s former patron, the late Dame Gillian Lynne, with its first recipient being Olivia Floydd, from Cuckfield. Olivia has trained at GAPA since 2012 and now continues her further training at the renowned Tring Park in September. Prefects were selected and with the outgoing Head Girl, Eloise Harwood, setting off to Bird College in September, Madeleine Wrigley, from Forest Row was announced as her successor. For more information about GAPA see back page.
