Robin & I Crowborough resident and local photographer, Tony Putman, has a very special friendship with a feathery friend. He and the robin have appeared on BBC South East, with photos on Springwatch, among other places. We are pleased to bring you a Q&A with him:

How did your relationship with robin’s begin? In 2014 I took a photo of a robin in my garden, I posted it on my facebook profile, a good friend commented, “you can train robins to fly to your hand”. I’m a gardener by trade, so it’s inevitable I’ll bump into wildlife (I’ve always loved animals anyway). At a job I work at for two days a week, I noticed a robin following me when I was digging the flower beds. It was November and I knew robins are territorial during winter, which meant I could find him and get to know him. I used dried mealworms to gain his trust. At the same time my parents gave me their old DSLR canon 300d camera; I wanted to get good photos of the robin. I named him ‘Robin’. That

was the beginning of my photography adventure and I’ll never have a lonely winter again. Robin was great, he’d follow me around the garden and he knew he was safe with me. One time he was sitting on the gate and he was looking up, so I looked and there was a kestrel hovering

above us. Robin looked at the kestrel and then looked at me and he didn’t run, he stayed, seeming to know the kestrel was unlikely to attack with me there.

Please describe a typical day with your feathery friend? It’s just normal for me. Bob is now the 8th robin, I trained 3 last year in the same garden (that was interesting). I’ll get to work and Bob will either be waiting for me on the fence by the gate or I’ll find him, usually in the hawthorn hedge which is the main part of his territory. He’ll have some mealworms, sometimes we’ll do some photography, then I’ll get on with my days’ work. I have my two dogs with me too, they’re both

ROBIN & I CONTINUED What's the best highlight of having your robin friendship? The best thing about having Bob in my life: he reminds me of what matters in the world. Everything we want is what other people tell us we should want. Nature doesn’t do that, it’s harsh yet beautiful and it’s there for all of us if we care to look. I have to be calm, patient and respectful for him to trust me, it’s a great way to relax. Plus, when spring arrives and we’ve all made it through the winter together, that’s a great feeling knowing he’s survived and will probably go on to raise his young.

What feedback have you had? border collies. During the day sometimes Bob will come and find me to see what I’m up to and sometimes he’ll call me by making a strange chirping noise. Or I’ll go looking for him if I want to do some photos or just want to say hello. I can call him too, as he recognises my call. It’s like having a wild pet but he’s free and can take care of himself, which is awesome.

If my robin photos put a smile on someone’s face, I’ll continue to photograph them. I’ll continue to befriend the robins either way, it’s second nature to me now. To see more about Tony and Robin’s story and to find out about his marvellous photography visit www.tonyputmanphotography.co.uk or follow Tony on Facebook.

Escaping to Ashdown Forest For those of us lucky enough to live nearby, Ashdown Forest has offered freedom, inspiration, and sanctuary over the last few months. Everyone will agree that the forest is more beautiful than ever, with recovering habitats providing shelter for record numbers of birds, butterflies, among others. We need nature more than ever which is why we kept the car parks open during lockdown, seeing unprecedented visitor numbers. We are proud of the role the forest has in enriching lives, however visitor numbers of this magnitude present new challenges. In the background, our team have been working harder than ever attending fires, deer vehicle collisions, fly-tips, caring for livestock, installing benches, litter picking the car parks, etc. We provided lockdown activities and developed educational resources, also launching wildlife projects, such as the iNaturalist app, to engage with the local community, while our conservation team has worked tirelessly. It is thanks to your support and donations that this is possible.

© Rob Bright

You may not be aware that Ashdown Forest is now predominantly self-financed and funding opportunities have been further diminished during the pandemic.

With that in mind, we are publishing a 2021 Ashdown Forest calendar, which shows its beauty through the seasons. All proceeds will go towards The Conservators of Ashdown Forest who have been caring for the forest since 1885. If you can help, the A3 calendar is available to buy through our website: www.ashdownforest.org/store/ Thank you for supporting Ashdown Forest.

AUTUMN

Gardening

Autumn is the perfect time of year to plant, as the soil is still warm from the summer sun, which encourages root growth, and moist from autumn rain. Choose plants that will add instant colour and drama to your garden now, grow your own winter vegetables, plant a fruit tree, or add spring flowering bulbs for beautiful blooms next year.

Instant Impact Plants As the days shorten go for to bold, vibrant colours, moving away from pale pastel colours that are so popular in summer. Brighten your garden by adding asters and chrysanthemums, and put life back into your beds and containers, with dainty violas, cyclamen and pansies.

Grow Your Own It’s so satisfying to grow your own fruit and veg and easy too. Now is the time to plant broad beans, cabbages, onions, garlic, peas, salad mixes and spinach. Autumn is also the best season to plant fruit trees such as apples, pears and plums – just give them time and they’ll reward you for years with glorious blossom in the spring followed by tasty fruit.

Bulbs Plan for spring and plant flowering bulbs now, and you’ll have beautiful blooms next year. Buying now give you the widest choice and freshest stock. Some of the most popular bulbs to try: tulips, daffodils, crocuses, alliums and snowdrops.

Get A Lush Lawn Now is the perfect time to get your lawn into shape. Remove Moss - Scarify your lawn with a rake to remove moss and weeds. Or if this sounds like too much hard work, then try a great product called ‘Mo Bacter’, an easy to use moss remover that ‘eats’ moss without turning it black, so you don’t have to rake it out! It is safe for children and pets, and can also feed your lawn for up to 100 days. Aerate Your Lawn - Perforating the soil with small holes helps drainage, and allows water, air and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots, giving you a stronger and more vigorous lawn. Small areas can be spiked with a garden fork, or use a handheld hollow tine aerator. Feed & Seed - Use a granular feed such as ‘Miracle-Gro Evergreen Autumn’ which releases a steady amount of nutrients over a period of weeks. Then fix any bare patches by overseeding. With thanks to www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk.

Start from the bronze statue of Winston Churchill on the green in Westerham. Walk towards the bus stop and cross the A25 at the crossing in front of the bus stop. Having crossed the A25 you will see an alleyway in front of you to Water Lane. Continue up the alleyway. After a short way you will come across a small stone hump; take care when stepping over this. 2. At the end of the alleyway you will come to a wooden kissing gate. Continue through the gate, entering the field (please keep dogs on lead at all times in the field) and head up the slope. Continuing up the slope, you will see a waymarked post pointing towards a metal kissing gate at the brow of the slope. Continue to the gate. 3. Go through the metal kissing gate into the next field and continue on straight ahead. You will come to a cross roads of paths and meet a waymark. Continue on straight ahead. 4. You will meet another waymark prior to a steep

slope. Follow the arrow and carefully descend the slope, taking care in wetter conditions. Head for the metal kissing gate in the corner of the field which will come into view as you descend. 5. Go through the kissing gate, entering a pine woodland. You will see a waymark pointing straight ahead; follow this path. You will come to a junction with a path going off to the left and the main path climbing up in front of you, which you will need to follow. 6. At the next waymark post, take a left turn. Continue up the path for approximately 5 minutes. You will reach Hosey

Hill Road and a waymark. 7. The waymark points across Hosey Hill Road at an angle. It is recommended that walkers walk along the grass verge for 50 metres and cross parallel with the waymark on the opposite side of the road. Take care when crossing as the road gets very busy. 8. Once in the car park you will see a waymark pointing to the right, out of the car park and up the path on the left-hand side. Shortly you will see another waymark confirming the direction upwards. Follow the path and you will join a main path and meet a waymark pointing leftwards.

Pippingford Park By Alan Morriss

The Pippingford Estate lies at the heart of Ashdown Forest, it has a fascinating history which we are pleased to bring you: My father, Hayley Morriss, bought the estate in 1919. He was in Shanghai when it came up for sale and following a telegram from my grandfather took the Trans-Siberian Railway home and just made it to the auction. Here is a brief history, of local interest, which is inextricably linked to that of Old Lodge and the Ashdown Forest in general: Up until the civil war, all the land - both that which is now in private hands and what is now the forest proper- were one and the same. The whole comprised a royal hunting preserve, with commoner’s rights being held by custom and tradition. With the overthrow of the monarchy and the execution of Charles I the situation was set for, “all change”. The parliamentary survey of 1685, carried out by William Dawes and others, is somewhat scathing about Pippingford. It refers to “Pippingford Lodge, and parcel of Ashdown Forest, late property of Charles Stuart, late king of England”. The occupant was one John Franke, described as a gentleman, and keeper of Pippingford Walke and the West Ward. The buildings were said to consist of a brew house, kitchen, parlour, larder, and a buttery below stairs in addition to the main house a stable, ox stall and barn also feature. The land was assessed at “one and twenty acres” and the buildings were said to be “out of repaire”.

Attached to Pippingford was a “parcell of open common and waste ground sett for and to the common wealth”. This stretched from Wych Cross, eastward down the gill to the head of a brook called Deep Deane Gill at Stony Brook, down to where it joined the steel forge river, and thence southwards for three quarter of mile to sixty perches below three wards and then back to Wych Cross. The woods and trees were said to be of little value except “for firing” and they were valued at forty pounds. In another survey, the land was claimed to be good for little else save growing rabbits. However, all was claimed by the common wealth. After the restoration of the monarchy, all presumably reverted to Charles II and due to his chronic shortage of money, he supposedly gave the land on which they lived to people such as gamekeepers, wardens and foresters in lieu of wages owed.

2 4 PIPPINGFORD PARK CONTINUED

John Newnham of Maresfield Park enclosed this area by simply buying them out and then joining up the dots. This is why the centre of the forest is now in private hands. Mr. Newnham is said to have set it up in more or less its present configuration, and planted many trees. Pippingford and Old Lodge then comprised 2175 acres. After passing through the hands of the Newnham heirs and successors, the estate was acquired by William Bradford in the early nineteenth century. He built the first mansion, which was later destroyed by fire on the fifth of November 1833. The local legend has it that no one came to help extinguish the flames, because it was thought in the village that it was a Guy Fawkes celebration. The fire is supposed to have been started by a drunken butler knocking over an oil lamp. Most of the contents were saved, but the house was destroyed, and was not apparently insured. The estate fell into the hands of the unfortunate Bradford’s lawyer, Henry Shirley.

Apparently, the house lay derelict until the estate was acquired by John Mortimer. He was obviously a man of some substance, as he had a town house in Hanover Square, London and was able to commission the famous French architect, Hector Horeau to build what must have been an exceedingly grand and expensive country one. Like another of Horeau’s creation, Normanhurst, near Battle, the house was modelled on a French chateau, and was hopelessly impractical. It was completed in 1857 and was three times the size of the present one. As a matter of interest, Hector Horeau won the competition for the design of the great exhibition of 1851 (Crystal Palace), but was not awarded the contract, no doubt because he was a foreigner. After Mortimers death in 1871, the property passed to a Mr Grey, who is believed to have been his nephew. He was reputed to have been a very pleasant man, and existing photographs seem to bear this out, he was well liked locally. Strangely enough the estate seldom seems to have been handed

on from father to son, and after his death it was owned by Captain Banbury, believed to have been in the Royal Engineers; He was supposedly Mr Grey’s nephew. Captain Banbury constructed, or perhaps reconstructed the existing middle lake, but the big lake, which now lies empty, was reconstructed by the previous owner. In 1914 Pippingford was acquired by a speculator, a Mr Anderson, who owned collieries. He cut down the vast majority of the trees, once so carefully planted by the previous owners, and effectively devastated the

2 6 PIPPINGFORD PARK CONTINUED estate. Despite this, he eventually became bankrupt, and the property was sold to my father, Hayley Morriss. After this the character changed and the same family still run it today. My father was a keen naturalist, and with the exception of foxes, wildlife was encouraged, and the existing lakes built. During the depression there was considerable local unemployment, so he undertook the restoration of the chain of lakes which had been used to drive the blast furnace when the Sussex iron industry was at its height. Anyone who wanted work was welcome, and this resulted in the current chain of lakes which are now classified as a site of special scientific interest. The lake of 20 acres was retained as an ornamental feature and probably for fishing. The old dam kept water impounded except for periods when it was drained for maintenance right up until 1946. It then failed due to damage caused by the Canadian soldiers catching fish with hand grenades. The compensation paid was totally insufficient to rebuild it. The old lake has been split in two, and the upper part is now full. An interesting story is attached to this: in the months before D Day, the Canadians were practising river crossing under fire. They had the light canvas and plywood collapsible boats for this and the fire was simulated by throwing in hand grenades. This was a fascinating spectacle for a small boy, and I saw the inevitable happen when a boat drifted over a grenade and it split the bottom. The boat sank and the soldiers had to swim for it. Some kit was inevitably lost.

However, when the old lake bed was being cleared before flooding, I found a Canadian army helmet in fair condition in just that spot! Farming was a secondary consideration, although the farm was run for agriculture. At one time it was reputedly the third largest pig farm in England. With the coming of World War 2 in 1939, the army moved in. This is believed to have been to counter any German paratroopers’ landings in the Ashdown Forest which would have been part of Operation Sealion; this was the code name for their planned invasion of England. The farm was run by the Ministry of Agriculture and after the war was let to a fruit farmer. In 1986 the lease was terminated, and the farm like the rest of the estate is now run with nature conservation as a foremost objective whilst trying to sympathetically derive an income. The historical habitat of the heathland of Ashdown Forest, which rare species depend on, is a difficult landscape to maintain and the owners of the Pippingford estate are working on a long-term nature project in co-ordination with Natural England to support the flora and fauna, bringing Exmoor ponies in to help with the job. Today the Pippingford estate holds events, offers coarse fishing & rooms to rent, is used for filming and much more. For further information visit: www.pippingford.co.uk

OPEN HANDS

10 th Anniversary

Open Hands is a locally based charity (Ashdown Forest area) which works with children and their families living in extreme poverty in Romania. We support marginalised families to escape poverty through education and encourage their inclusion into society to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Dear Ashdown Forest readers, this year marks our 10-year anniversary! A real opportunity to look back and celebrate all the wonderful things that we have achieved in the lives of ‘our’ children. We were looking forward to celebrate with our team and children in Romania, however then corona happened and everything came to a standstill. For the Open Hands children these programs are lifelines and their only escape from poverty. As so often, in times of crisis, children and the poor suffer the most. We became very concerned about the welfare of the children as we provide food, education and vital social time at our programs. Corona meant isolation and as their parents lost the small day jobs they had; it meant no income. During this time we took Einstein’s words to heart: ‘It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” We began providing families with increased amounts of food which we left outside their homes. To make sure the children continued to learn we brought school materials. Children and parents alike were overjoyed to have this social contact and receive these much-needed supplies. As schools and projects re-open our work continues. We want to equip these children to

succeed at school but also have a safe place to live at home. This year we have been very busy helping-13-year old Malina to be safer at home. Malina lives with her mother suffering from learning disabilities and her elderly, sick grandmother. Malina spent her entire life sharing one tiny room with her mother and grandmother. The room hardly fits two single beds and the three of them live, cook and sleep there. The room is not only tiny, its condition is also life-threatening as its ceiling is dilapidated and saturated, ready to collapse at any time. Partnering with the local mayor we built a new house for the family. The building work is complete and we are now furnishing the new home, ready for the family to move in this autumn. Very soon for the first time in Malina’s life she will live in a proper house with her own space, running water, a kitchen and a bathroom. If you would like to learn more about the work Open Hands does have a look at our social media Facebook or Instagram pages – we update these all the time. As we continue our work, I hope that you too find hope in the midst of adversity. There is always a way. Rebekka
