We’re going on a mushroom hunt! John Wright, regular on Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall’s TV series ‘River Cottage’ is an acknowledged expert and author in foraging for wild food, he has led our forays at Moon Down in Bells Yew Green for 7 years. John’s knowledge guides the novice forager to confidence, to forage some of the tastiest edible mushrooms. A day with John is an education on the nature of fungi and he is also an entertaining raconteur. The day is punctuated by a delicious 3-course lunch, with wine and ends with a Q&A session accompanied by tea & cake. Many of the forays result in up to 70 different species of fungi being found and a single specimen of each is placed in either the edible or inedible basket and then displayed on the ‘Show & Tell’ table. A day with John will give you the confidence to pick easily identifiable tasty mushrooms so that your country walks will not only yield blackberries but also, if you are lucky, a basket of ceps! To book your place, see our ad on the right.

The Sackvilles of Sussex This month we were able to gain first-hand information from Lord & Lady De La Warr, of the famous local Sackville family of Buckhurst Park, for this history article, which we hope all our readers will enjoy: Sackville is a name of Danish origin, however the family settled in northern France as a prominent Norman family during the time of William the Conqueror. The village of Sauqueville, which was very recently visited by Lord & Lady De La Warr, lies 7km south of Diappe. William the Conqueror actually entrusted Hebrand de Saqueville to keep Normandy secure, while he ventured, with others to overcome Britain. Two years after the conquest, Hebrand left Normandy to settle here. His grandson Jordan de Sackville married an Ella de Dene, a local heiress (whose own grandfather,

Ralph de Dene was the official cupbearer of King Edward the Confessor). This brought Buckhurst Park, the Withyham estate (near Tunbridge Wells), into the family where it has steadfastly remained as the historical, main seat for almost a thousand years, as Lord & Lady De La Warr state it is always 'held by the head of the family'. The family’s prominence within the Anglo-Norman society of the day continued over the next couple of hundred years. Land was acquired through dowries and other bestowments.

Stoneland Lodge, now Buckhurst House, in 1783

Sir Thomas Sackville 1st Earl of Dorest In 1390, Sir Thomas Sackville absorbed Bolebroke (near Hartfield) and the more famous Bodium into the family, when he married a local heiress, Margaret Dalingridge. In 1488, his grandson Humphrey Sackville was buried in the family vault under the Sackville Chapel, a private chapel within the parish church of Withyham. I am told by Lord & Lady De La Warr that this vault has remained the burial place for all Sackville heirs since that time. In the next century a John Sackville (1484 –1557), MP for East Grinstead (in those days, the political seat of this area), was head of the

family. He married Margaret Boleyn of Hever castle, aunt of Anne Boleyn, and although he wouldn’t have known it at the time, set in motion a closeness to the crown which would last many years hence. Lord & Lady De La Warr explained that there is still a ‘Bullen Wood’ on the Buckhurst estate named after Margaret Boleyn – Bullen was the original name before Anne Boleyn’s father changed the spelling, to give it a more sophisticated flair as part of his political ambitions. Having disposed of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII had a propensity for ‘getting rid’ of people who fell out of favour. Lord & Lady De La Warr explained that many of the Boleyn’s were simply no longer ‘around’ by the time Elizabeth I came to the throne. However, Thomas Sackville, John Sackville’s grandson, was. As so few relations remained on her mother’s side, Queen Elizabeth took a particular warmth to her second cousin and Thomas soon became a favourite at court. In 1567 he was created Baron Buckhurst which is still a title held today. He was also made Earl of Dorset by the Queen (the Dukedom of Sussex is, afterall, only for royal use) but in fact 'the family has never had any land in Dorset', I’m reliably told. We have already published articles devoted to Thomas Sackville who was a famous poet and dramatist of his day. As a much-trusted courtier, he was appointed

Sackville College from the High street the first Lord Treasurer – this was before there was a prime minister, which Lord & Lady De La Warr explained, ‘would have been the closest title in the modern day’. We can also thank him for being the ‘first person to raise tax on tobacco’, which had recently been brought back from the New World by Sir Walter Raleigh – as we now know, he was doing everyone’s health a great favour! His consummate talents didn’t stop there; sent by Queen Elizabeth to tell Mary Queen of Scots that she would be beheaded, apparently, he was understood to have conveyed such dire news in a ‘nice way’. As Lord Lieutenant of Sussex he was responsible for guarding the Sussex coast, and watched the Armada as it went by, Lord & Lady De La Warr stated that keeping London informed and preparing Sussex for a possible landing was his job. The Queen granted him Knole in Kent for his services, previously owned by the Archbishop of Canterbury. This became the second main family house and he spent the time divided between Buckhurst Park and Knole – as well as London of course.

Queen Elizabeth came to course deer at the Withyham estate and there is still a field called ‘race course’ after this auspicious occasion. Lord & Lady De La Warr say that she would have only stayed a night or two; any royal visit would incur incredible expense and she had to spread her favours otherwise there was too much jealousy! His son Robert Sackville built Sackville College in East Grinstead which proudly stands to this day as a

jewel in the crown of East Grinstead’s history and in fact the stone to build this locally loved almshouse was taken from Buckhurst Park, after the main house at the Withyham estate was knocked down and rebuilt anew. At the beginning of the 17th century, Robert’s son Richard Sackville became the third Earl. He was described by Lord & Lady De La Warr as being ‘a calamity’. Historian’s remember him as one of the seventeenth century’s most accomplished gamblers and wastrels, and his debts were still being paid by the family well after his death. He is mostly remembered for his unsuccessful marriage to Lady Anne Clifford, a strongwilled heiress determined to retain her fortune and lands, who has a whole story of her own. They only had one surviving daughter so the peerage and inheritance went to Richard’s brother Edward Sackville,

fondly viewed by the family as ‘the great cavalier’. The 4th Earl of Dorset succeeded to the family estates in 1624, which were heavily encumbered by his brother’s wanton spending and gambling, his first step was to sell off land to pay off his brother's debts (money was still recorded as owing up to 1650). He became joint Lord Lieutenant of Sussex and Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex, and held several other offices, including the mastership of Ashdown Forest. At the coronation of Charles I, in 1626, he carried the first sword, and was called to the Privy Council. Like his grandfather Thomas, his influence at court was unquestionable and was fully established by his appointment as Lord Chamberlain to Queen Henrietta. The force behind the founding of Salisbury Court Theatre, he was a prime mover and shaker in the London theatre world, with a hand in the control of the American colonies. He wouldn’t have known at the time, but Edward engineered the betrothal of marriage of the young one-year old Princess Mary to the Dutch Prince William of Orange, who, many years later would rule over these lands as Mary I and William of Orange. On the same day that parliamentary soldiers were plundering Knole House in 1642, he was fighting on the side of the Royalists at Edge Hill. King Charles I asked him

to take the Prince of Wales (later Charles II) and Prince James out of the battle; his famous retort, recalled and recorded in 1679, by the then King James II goes: ‘the old Earl of Dorset at Edgehill, being commanded by the King, my father, to go and carry the prince and myself up the hill out of the battle, refused to do it, and said he would not be thought a coward for ever a King's son in Christendom’, such was his belief in the monarchy. Edward, Earl of Dorset was contemporarily described as a ‘beautiful, graceful, and vigorous: his wit pleasant, sparkling, and sublime ... The vices he had were of the age, which he was not stubborn enough to contemn or resist’. An able orator, he was a moderate politician with a strong respect for the royal prerogative, and attachment to the Protestant cause and liberties of parliament. He stated that if the king was executed, he would not leave whichever house he was in at that moment for the rest

THE SACKVILLES OF SUSSEX

Nell gwyn peter lely c 1675 of his life. Thus, on King Charles I’s execution, he remained in his London house until his death, his body was brought to Withyham for burial. His wife, Lady Mary Curzon, Countess of Dorset was governess to Charles I’s children. When Cromwell seized power, she remained dedicated to the care of the royal children (those who had not fled the country), Lord & Lady De La Warr explained that she remained ‘fully neutral’, determined not to antagonise. Thus, on her death, Cromwell granted her a state funeral in Westminster Abbey for her, ‘godly and conscientious care and pains,’ highly unusual for any woman to have had such an accolade, especially one granted to an aristocrat by ‘the other side’. Lord & Lady De La Warr stated that they named their younger son after the courageous Edward Sackville. Edward’s grandson, Charles Sackville, was the 6th Earl of Dorset. As well as being MP for East Grinstead, he was a poet and great friend of Charles II. In fact, he had no taste for politics and was known as a rake, a rabble rouser, and indulger in the excesses of the age. At that time, the restoration of the monarchy had offered a garish freedom to the aristocracy which couldn’t be expressed in the Cromwellian era. Lord & Lady De La Warr say that Charles Sackville was somewhat of a Libertine, ‘moving in the circles of the infamous Earl of Rochester’, though something in his character rendered his follies less obnoxious, as Rochester himself is

thought to have told King Charles that, ‘he did not know how it was, my Lord Dorset might do anything, yet was never to blame’. Very much the ladies’ man, he lured the famous mistress of the age, Nell Gwyn (who may have been from the Tunbridge Wells area) away from the theatre to set up an ménage-a-trois with Charles Sedley in Epsom, where he could also indulge his love of horses. He closeness to the King meant he was the reason for the fateful meeting between Nell and the King, and the start of that famous royal love affair. Lord & Lady De La Warr explained that King Charles paid Sackville, ‘12 gold sovereigns’ to ‘acquire’ the services of Nell and sequester her undivided attentions. The King created him ‘Knight of the Garter’ and his banner is still on proud display in the Sackville Chapel to this day – along with several others the family have been granted down the years. Charles’ brother, King James II was not as fond of Charles Sackville, after a spat over a mistress, and he thus retired from court. His lasting legacy is that of words: as well as being a patron to writers of the day, he also published a famous song while at sea, written on the eve of battle, ‘To all you ladies now at Land’, which is contained in The Oxford Book of English Verse. The second article about the Sackville family history, right up to present day will be published next month, this will include the current goings-on at Buckhurst Park. Buckhurst Park hosts weddings, as well as other country pursuits and corporate hospitality. See buckhurstparkweddings. co.uk, for more information and contact details. We would also like to mention that the Dorset Arms in Withyham, owned by Lord and Lady De La Warr, and for which produce reared and grown on the Buckhurst estate is provided, was in September named by the Spectator Life as one of the five ‘best country pubs close to London’. Our most grateful thanks to Lord & Lady De La Warr for providing information to help write this article.

UN-CHUCK YOUR CHINTZ Interior design trends for Autumn/Winter 2019

B

old chintzy prints are back! This style – defined by floral designs and picturesque patterns – has a long history that dates back to 17th-century India when chintz textiles first arrived in Europe and became an instant hit. Since then, these romantic, whimsical designs have emblazoned everything from dresses and curtains to sofas and throw pillows. Then famously, in the 80’s IKEA told us to ‘chuck out the chintz’ and make way for their more scandi, minimalist interiors.

Fabric companies like Linwood and House of Hackney are embracing this new aesthetic and patterns have been re-interpreted to appeal to contemporary tastes. They no longer conjure up images of your grandmother’s tired old sofa, but burst with paisleys, florals and vivid botanicals. Striking colour palettes feature prints of oriental flowers and intertwining palms with exotic birds in their branches. The rules have loosened too, so there’s no need to completely re-work your living room because it’s OK to include a little chintz as part of a more minimal scheme or mix it up with a stripe or complementary texture.

Of course, this isn’t the only new trend for the winter months – rich jewel shades that add a touch of opulence to your living space are really big right now – emerald green velvets, sumptuous sapphire blues & ruby red shades create a head-turning look. Green is enduring too - from chartreuse to emerald, you can layer different tones of this

18 calming colour to create depth. Green is a calming, sophisticated and thoughtprovoking colour. It imbues rooms with a sense of refinement and works well in botanical interiors. As we seek to protect and nurture our environment, to avoid plastics in our daily life and in our homes, the use of green on furniture and walls is a fabulous backdrop to the natural materials we’re embracing.

If your tastes are more of a neutral, then try introducing metallics and texture into your scheme to add more interest. All these new, seasonal trends are being embraced at Sofas & Stuff at the Estate Yard in Eridge, where they have lots of lovely fabrics to choose from. They just celebrated their 10 year, with the introduction of three new contemporary sofa designs, in time for Christmas deliveries.

Dear Sariah, Both my husband and I run our own businesses, with three children in tow. I realise modern life is full on, with no time, but I’m always chasing my tail and end up stressed, as I’m behind all the time, playing catch up. We’d love to be in a position where we both didn’t have to work but that’s just how it is. Recently my husband and I have been feeling a little bit despondent with it all, tired and getting grumpy with eachother which is only because of the stress really… how to do it all? Any suggestions would be welcome! - C. Whitman It does indeed sound like your life is pretty full on which can be incredibly overwhelming. It is really important to try to get some sort of work/life balance which of course is always easier said than done. Bulk food-making is a really good way of making feeding time at the zoo a little easier. On those super-busy days you would be able to just grab something from the freezer and you’re sorted. The purchase of a slow cooker is also a good way to have great meals ready for you at the end of a long day. If your children are old enough, get them involved in the daily chores. Remember that you don’t have to do it by yourself and more often than not they rise to the challenge beautifully. My biggest tip though, if you find that you and your husband are niggling at each other, is to always make time for a date night. If it’s possible, recruit a friend or family member to babysit one night every week if you can. Every other week if that’s easier. Or maybe hire a babysitter if that’s something you can stretch to. It doesn’t matter what you do - dinner, the pub, the cinema, a walk - it’s just so important to spend some time together, away from the children, the business and any other stresses. If going out together isn’t a possibility at the moment then make your own stay-at-home date night. Have some dinner and sit with each other at the table once the kids have gone

to bed. Put your phones down, turn off the TV and just take some moments to be with each other. Often our lives are so busy that we can easily lose sight of each other and what’s really important. With just a little effort, we can put things in place that helps us hold on a bit tighter. Good luck.

Master Chef in the Making

Last month Forest Row school boy Mackenzie Lloyd-Skinner beat off stiff competition to win Cbbc’s Step Up to The Plate. Young chefs from around the country, battled it out in the heat of a top London kitchen where Mackenzie was deservedly crowned winner. Here is a short Q&A: What made you decide to take part in Step Up To The Plate? Mrs Smeaton my food tech teacher encouraged a few of us to apply for the show. It was quite a lengthy application process which included sending in a video of me cooking. I’ve always enjoyed cooking but never thought I’d get picked to go on the show!

and Fred Sirieix the hosts, really put us at ease. Once we got into the kitchens there was literally no time to be nervous. In the semi-final we had to prepare, cook and serve a dish from a limited ingredient list in 30 minutes which felt really pressured, especially working in a kitchen you’re not used to. This was then judged by guest judges Tom Parker Bowles and Angellica Bell.

Were you nervous? What was the biggest challenge? I didn’t really know what to expect, but all the film crew, as well as Allegra Mcevedy

Were you surprised when you won? Absolutely! I had no idea - the other three

THE GREAT OUTDOORS A new country park opens near Uckfield Keeping the countryside free, accessible and most importantly, in existence, is something we all want. Not least because the health benefits of a good dose of fresh air and nature can’t be exaggerated, not only for the physical benefits but mental too. With that in mind, we bring you the fabulous news of the official opening of Horsted Green Park, late last month. Wealden’s latest open-access area consists of 74 acres of rolling countryside on the western edge of Uckfield, and provides an alternative recreational space to Ashdown Forest. Excellent for ramblers, dog walkers and nature lovers, it looks out over Uckfield and the High Weald, with three different waymarked paths and range of different natural features to experience, including wild flower meadows, orchards, ponds and woodland. The walking routes will be supplemented by grass paths which provide additional routes during the summer months. It is hoped that the opening of the park will help reduce any potential environmental damage caused by increased visitor numbers to Ashdown Forest which, as many know, is an ecologically important stretch of lowland heathland, a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation. The park includes something a bit different with an orchard which has been planted with traditional varieties of fruit and nut trees. Over the summer as the final landscaping was taking place, local dog walkers were already able to enjoy the space which is proving popular - previously the site had been a large arable field with a few trees and an overgrown pond. There is a car park for visitors of the park in Horsted Pond Lane, TN22 5TH, but walkers can also get there using the footpath running

underneath the Uckfield bypass from the Ridgewood estate. Gravel pathways provide all year walking routes and are accessible for wheelchair users.

Jack-O-Lantern In October we rush out to buy our pumpkins for Halloween. We carve them in ever elaborate ways to make scary and sometimes fun faces. Jack-o-Lanterns have been made for hundreds of years, originally to ward off evil spirits, but what is the story behind the name?

Jack was an old, manipulative drunk who liked to deceive all those who crossed his sorry path. One fateful night the devil overheard complaints about Jack and his smoothtalking trickery. Unconvinced, he decided to find out the truth behind the rumours. So, one night, after Jack had floundered out of the pub in his usual drunken stupor, he stumbled upon a body looking up at him on the cobblestone path. An eerie grimace on its face, he knew at once it was the devil who had come for his blackened soul. Jack made one last request to the devil: buy me a few pints of ale before you take me to Hades. Curious, the devil obliged Jack, and they went back to the pub together. Jack got stuck into his much-loved

binge-drinking. The devil was amused at his antics, so when Jack asked him to pay the tab and suggested he metamorphosed into a silver coin to do so, he obliged. Quick as a flash, Jack grabbed the silver coin and placed it into his pocket, which also contained a crucifix. The devil was enraged but there was nothing he could do; he was stuck and could not change back, he had no choice but to agree to Jack’s demands: in exchange for his freedom he would spare Jack’s wanton soul for ten years. So, ten years to the day Jack struck the deal, appears the devil. Jack seemingly resigns himself to his fate but exclaimed that he was starving and could the devil at least give him some food before his journey to Hades. Spotting a nearby apple tree, he suggests the devil pick him an apple. Climbing the tree, Jack quickly pushes crucifixes into the ground in a ring around the tree, trapping the devil in in its branches. Annoyed that he has been tricked yet again, the devil demands his release, but not before promising Jack he will spare his dark soul for another ten years. Eventually the drinking takes its toll on Jack and he dies. His soul is stopped

at the gates of St. Peter and turned away – no surprise! Wondering to the gates of hell, Jack begs for admission into the underworld. But his little trick comes back to haunt him when the devil, fulfilling his obligation to Jack, turns away his soul. But not before giving Jack an ember to mark him as an ‘inhabitant’ of the underworld. The ember is placed in a hollowed turnip and from that day until eternity, Jack is doomed to roam the world between the planes of good and evil, with only an ember to light his way. When this Irish tale reached American shores, they found at this time of year pumpkins were more abundant than the turnips found in Ireland. Now pumpkins are forever associated with Halloween.

Residential building quickly grew up south of the river in the second half of the nineteenth century, leading to the establishment of a thriving residential and commercial community in the New Town/Framfield Road area. It was said that those living there could get almost everything they needed from the local shops, without having to come into the High Street. Many residents still remember them. 5th – 12th October 2019 (Closed Sunday 6th).
