Welcome to the first issue of 2020! This issue is packed with news from the Ashdown Forest, with a forward view to this year’s plans. We also have a fascinating feature about the rare white squirrel and its particular presence in this area. Need a little ‘resolutions’ support? See our piece with a few, hopefully, helpful suggestions.

Friends Wood In 2017 the Friends of Ashdown Forest purchased 12 acres of land adjacent to the Forest Centre, with the intention of enhancing the education programme offered by the conservators. Friends have also generously funded works to create a forest school that will offer children the chance to cherish and enjoy our woodland and wildlife. If you would like to be a member in 2020, see: www.friendsofashdownforest.co.uk. We also received a donation from the Waitrose Community Matters scheme (Crowborough) to purchase equipment to introduce activities to stimulate interest through child-directed free play, such as natural play on tightropes and slacklines, woodcraft activities using simple hand tools, sculpture, arts & craft, and basic bushcraft. A large tarpaulin and equipment for games to promote environmental awareness was also funded.

The Ashdown Forest Foundation The inaugural charity launch dinner was held at the Ashdown Park Hotel in November. Around 110 people attended, raising around ÂŁ24,000. Ex-England cricketer Chris Cowdrey organised the fundraiser and hosted the event, Harry Redknapp was guest of honour and the auction was conducted by British antiques expert, Charlie Ross.

The Clumps Walk 2020 We are inviting families, residents, companies and community groups to join us on Easter

Saturday (11th April 2020) for the revival of the iconic Ashdown Forest Clumps Walk to raise funds for The Ashdown Forest Foundation. The walk is a beautiful fourteen-mile circular route visiting 11 of the existing 12 clumps on the forest. Please put the date in your diaries and watch this space. Sponsorship packs will be available at the end of January.

Chase News Our conservation work last year was dominated by gorse and bracken control (both incredibly invasive). Bracken management has been extensive, with an additional 157 hectares covered by external contractors on top of the annual work completed by our in-house team. Summer house-keeping included extensive ride (fire break) management and mowing, strimming of sightlines and around benches, installation of signs, dangerous tree work, installation of and repairs to forest furniture and dealing with fly-tipping. Over the autumn our growing team of conservation volunteers helped to clear a huge amount of rhododendron from Charles Smith wood and around the tank tracks behind St Johns car park in Crowborough to allow natural fauna and flora to flourish. They also cleared a vast amount of birch and pine scrub from the heath between the forest centre and a wetland restoration project in Broadstone Bog. Volunteers from Sainsburys in East Grinstead, Southern Sheeting, Metro Bank and UK Power Networks all helped open miles of rides - fire breaks. In October the team replaced a bridge (kindly funded by Danehill Parish Council) at the lower Braberry pond. Our team worked along New Road to clear scrub and gorse to open sight lines along

Ham Hock Pressing with Granny Smith Apple & Pickled Cauliflower By Alex Floyd, Pastry Chef, Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

Ingredients • 5 x ham hocks (unsmoked)

• 1 x savoy cabbage

• ½ x bunch of thyme

• 1 x chervil bunch

• 1 x bulb of garlic

• 100ml x white wine vinegar

• 2 x carrots

• 160g x caster sugar

• 2 x large onions

• 10g x coriander seeds

• 5 x Granny Smith apple

• 5 g x szechwan pepper

• 1 x head cauliflower

• 1 x tablespoon lemon juice

method 1. Place your Ham Hocks into a large deep pan and cover with cold water. Chop your carrots, onions into large pieces and add to the hocks followed by the thyme and again with the garlic just chop the whole bulb in half and add to the mix. 2. Bring to the boil and then simmer for 3-4 hours or until the hocks are nice and tender, a sign to look out for is that the bone will just pull out from inside the hocks, this will tell you they are ready and cooked. 3. Once cooked turn off the heat and leave to cool down for 2-3 hours, then remove the hocks place them onto a tray, you need to remove the fat from the outside then pick down the meat from the hocks. 4. Take your savoy cabbage, remove the outer couple of leaves, cut into quarters, remove the stalk and then shred with a sharp knife nice and fine, place a pan of salted water on the stove and bring to the boil, then drop in your cabbage for 3 minutes and refresh in ice cold water, once cold, drain well and season. 5. Pick down your chervil then chop nice and fine, add this to your ham hock and mix well. 6. Take your terrine mould, brush with a touch of olive oil then line it with cling film.

7. Put a layer of ham hock in about ¾ of a inch then a 3mm layer off savoy cabbage, continue this until all the ingredients have been used, then using something that has some weight to it place it carefully on top of the terrine and press it for 24 hours. Pickling syrup

Place 75g of caster sugar and 100ml of white wine vinegar into a pan and boil for 2

The First Pooh-Seum Opens

© Andy Dorrington

© Andy Dorrington

Last month saw the opening of a brand-new museum dedicated to Ashdown Forest’s favourite son, Pooh Bear, at Hartfield’s Pooh Corner.

© Andy Dorrington

The ‘Pooh-seum’ is dedicated to A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard’s legacy, with rare and historic items from books & toys to teddies and technology, everything that makes the world of Pooh special. Over 200 came to see presenter and broadcaster, and longtime friend of the late Christopher Robin Milne, Gyles Brandreth open the museum. Relatives of the original owner of Pooh Corner Mike Ridley were there and others old enough to have the claim to fame of having played with Christopher Robin himself.

Neil commented, “Our aim with the museum is to help tell the amazing story behind the bear and the relationship with the village of Hartfield and most importantly with each other. With items dating as far back as 1890 it really helps deliver a new angle on the lives behind the stories we all love." See www.poohcorner.co.uk

Gyles stated “Christopher Robin would have been thrilled with the pooh-seum because it’s a real celebration of the world of A.A. Milne” Pooh Corner is now in its 41st year and is on the up and up since Neil and Samantha Reed took the reins last year. The historic little house built in 1703 is a world-famous stop for Pooh-lovers. With an estimated 40,000 visitors last year, the focus is on ensuring they learn the stories of Ashdown Forest’s famous residents, their creators and the quintessential village of Hartfield.

Taylor Made Dreams Local, Crowborough charity Taylor-Made Dreams was set up by Suzi Michell in 2012. Suzi’s inspirational son Taylor, was able to put together and complete an incredible bucket list before he sadly passed away; family friends helped to fundraise towards it. Dreams were fulfilled, including meeting top footballer Gareth Bale. A lover of comedy, Taylor was also able to meet his favourite comedian John Bishop who would later become the charity’s patron. Suzi decided she would set up Taylor Made Dreams to do the same for other children with life-limiting illnesses. Since then the charity has gone from strength to strength and recently won the prestigious overall UK ‘People’s Choice’ Award’ at the Groundwork Community Awards. We asked Suzi a bit more about this incredible local charity: What are the best things you have been able to do through the charity? Bringing smiles to the eyes of children who don’t feel like smiling and helping to create precious family memories that will last a lifetime is undoubtedly the best thing. There have been many extraordinary experiences like children meeting their idols; a few examples are Sir Ben Ainslie, David Walliams, Gregg Wallace, Wayne Rooney,

What do you envision for the future?

Rob Brydon, Tim Vine and John Bishop. A few other highlights: a mad hatters tea party in a hospital room, a virtual skydive and unicorn party are a few individual experiences that come to mind, there have been over 850 since we became registered in 2014! What local support have you had along the way? We have been extremely lucky to have had support from local business and the Crowborough community. Business man, Shane Armstrong, and his business partner Paul Wilcox, very generously invested funds to help in the early stages, and gave a staggering £20,000 to buy us a wheelchair access vehicle, fondly known as the ‘Taymobile’. Mark Hanford of the Purprint group in Uckfield provided professional graphic design services, and all our printing needs pro-bono. Local schools and groups support us through donations and participation events; we are very lucky to be based in the heart of the community.

Our aim is to meet the needs of more children and families across the South East by creating more referral pathways to accompany the 16 we already have in place. We have positive working relationships with The Royal Marsden, Chestnut Tree House Hospice, Ellenor among many more. Our long-term vision is the Taylor Made Dreams Centre which will support children with life-limiting illnesses and their families to offer a warm welcoming environment with a sensory room, family communal space, holistic and counselling rooms, a wet room, support hub and the head offices of the charity, as well as bereavement counselling. If you would like more information about how you can support this local, home-grown charity in 2020, see www. taylormadedreams.net. Tel: 01892 655533.

IMPROVING YOUR SMILE CAN NEVER BE WRONG!

All patients are given treatment plans that give a complete breakdown of the elements covered by the NHS and those that would fall under private treatment. Patients are then able to make informed choices and budget accordingly. Whilst subsidised NHS treatments are pay as you go, finance is available for private treatments, payable over 1, 3 or 5 years and a patient membership plan is also offered. Riverview Dental Centre and it’s dedicated team are committed to quality and excellence and to the NHS and taking on new NHS patients. Subsidised NHS treatment is available to everyone and FREE to anyone under the age of 18, if still in education, unemployed, pregnant or recently given birth. The practice also offers dental implants to replace missing teeth. When insufficient tooth remains to restore a tooth, a dental implant can often be a better option. Dental implants

can also be used to support dentures, and in some cases several dental implants can be used to support a large bridge replacing all the teeth in the mouth, and in doing so improve your smile. With more than 10 years implant treatment experience, DentistryForYou offers a free consultation service where they explore all patient options, and depending on what is best for the patient, an individual treatment plan is created. Unlike an implant centre, the team at Riverview Dental Centre look at all the options, judging on a patient-by-patient basis. And for those of you who would like to straighten their teeth, the practice offers short term cosmetic orthodontic treatment using high quality brands, namely Invisalign and CFast. If you are looking for a practice that offers every aspect of modern day dental treatments, a team of highly experienced dentists and the very latest in technology and quality standards, then call 01342 823 004 or pop in to book your appointment.

SUDOKUS

Located in the heart of Forest Row, Riverview Dental Centre helps to serve the dental needs of not only Forest Row but also surrounding towns and villages. The practice is part of the DentistryForYou Group established in 1986. There are four treatment rooms boasting modern dĂŠcor and the use of the latest in equipment and technology allowing patients to receive the very best in treatment options and care. The team at Riverview Dental Centre offer a wealth of experience in every aspect of dental care, from check ups and x-rays, fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures and cosmetic dentistry. Children and nervous patients are treated with understanding and empathy and where necessary, extra appointment time is allowed so that time can be taken to put the patient at ease and ensure they are comfortable throughout.

WHAT DO RIGHT SAID FRED, ADELE & LED ZEPPELIN HAVE IN COMMON? to play for other stars. He played with Bob Dylan in a film called, ‘Hearts of Fire’. He also auditioned for David Bowie and teamed up with him on three occasions. ‘Jazzin’ the Blue Jean’ was first, quickly followed by ‘Loving the Alien’ and ‘Labyrinth’.

The band Right Said Fred of ‘I’m Too Sexy’ fame, was formed in East Grinstead in 1989 by Frederick, born 1956 and his brother, Richard Fairbrass, born three years earlier, in 1953. They were the sons of Peter and Doreen Fairbrass, who were residents in the area. After moving to East Grinstead, their two sons attended Imberhorne Comprehensive School. There they met and teamed up with their friend, Rob Mangoli, who played the drums, to start a group. They took their name from a novelty song, written and performed by Bernard Cribbins. Bernard appeared recently on a TV quiz programme, at ninety, he was physically, quite frail but his mind was clear. His team won £22,000 for their various charities. The song has been used recently, with amendments to the lyrics, in a TV commercial for a firm of offering equity release. Quite why the group chose this title in not known but as the lead vocalist was called ‘Fred’ and maybe used the word ‘right’ often, could be a clue! Their first song to be recorded, ‘I’m Too Sexy’, was released in 1991. It won a Novello Award, as did a later hit, ‘Deeply Dippy’. They were recognised by radio hosts, Gary Crowly and Simon Bates and from there, they went from strength to strength. They had number 1 hits in thirty countries. Richard or Rich, as he was usually known, was an excellent guitar player who was asked

Right Said Fred’s work has remained popular over the years and the still play many gigs. Their drummer, Rob Mangoli, left in 1997, but the brothers have stayed together now for thirty years. In September this year, Imberhorne School celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of the opening of the site at Imberhorne lane. Fred sent a video to the reunion congratulating them on their success and recalling his time there. Fred married firstly, Louise Bernard, who was once going out with Simon Cowell. They have a son. He also has a daughter, Marina, with his second wife, Alex. Rich had a long-time partner, Stuart Pantry, who sadly died. I’m Too Sexy is now enshrined in pop-culture history, with a legacy that means you’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard that iconic song. Two decades earlier, another renowned group was in this area. Although not in any way connected to Sussex, as were Right Said Fred, two members of the group, which started life calling themselves New Yardbirds, bought property in the area and used them for recording and studio space. That group became one of the most influential bands of all time, Led Zeppelin, consisting of lead vocalist, Robert Plant, who also wrote many of the lyrics, on guitar was Jimmy Page, the

bass guitarist and keyboard player was Paul Jones with John Bonham on drums. Jimmy Page moved into a farmhouse between Crawley Down and Turners Hill, at some time in the seventies. In 1973, their lead vocalist purchased the historically significant, Hammerwood Park. This Grade 2 listed building has now been largely restored by its present owner, David Pinnegar, but was, after years of neglect, in a nearly derelict condition. After only two or three years the group ceased using it and it fell further into decay - not before they’d left some interesting graffiti on some of the walls among other remnants of their rockstar lifestyles…They were, at one point, the best-selling group of all time with estimated sales of between 200 and 300 million albums sold world-wide. “Stairway to Heaven” can still be heard

In 2017 one of the most iconic singers of the 21st century, Adele reportedly spent £4 million on an 18th century manor house on the outskirts of East Grinstead, Ridge Hill Manor, in order to bring up her four-year-old son Angelo. She had opted for a ‘normal, unflashy’ life in an eight-bedroom mansion with her then husband Simon Konecki. Although it is unclear where she now resides, as she has various properties over the world, the house is still understood to be in her ownership.

been asked on many occasions. The ‘Why East Grinstead?’ question can be posed in this case: why a home-grown group, ‘Right Said Fred’ and one of the world’s most bands of all time Led Zeppelin, formed by people from all over the country should be clustered here in this part of Sussex market town, at more or less the same period is unfathomable, not forgetting of course, a world superstar such as Adele.

Birds on Ashdown Forest By Ranger James Clow

Dartford Warbler 2019 by Alastair Gray

How do we know how wildlife is faring on Ashdown Forest? For birds the answer is the annual Sussex Bird Report, produced by the Sussex Ornithological Society. The 2018 one has just come out and among the wealth of information is that there were more records submitted for the forest (19,474) than anywhere else in the county, bar the RSPB-managed Pulborough Brooks and Pagham Harbour. For heathland species the picture looks to have been one of ‘business as usual’ with the forest contributing most of the county’s breeding records for Dartford warbler, nightjar, stonechat, tree pipit and woodlark. But the birch-dominated heathland/woodland fringes are also important. This is the habitat of the willow warbler for which the report states: “The

majority of breeding records by far came from Ashdown Forest as usual, keeping the tradition of this favoured breeding area”. Records of both redstart and woodcock ensured that the forest woodlands also retained their county pre-eminence, but sadly the wood warbler has now lost its last foothold here – so not a single bird bred in the county. A special moment

Female Redstart by Alastair Gray

when a red-backed shrike at Old Lodge, one fine day in May, was a reminder of a species that last bred in 1968! A special county-wide survey of the firecrest did however find some pairs breeding. Among the winter visitors there was just one hen harrier, in October, reflecting a wider decline, and possibly just two

BIRDS ON ASHDOWN FOREST CONTINUED individuals of the great grey shrike - only one was seen anywhere else in Sussex. An extraordinary event in the winter of 2017/2018 was the invasion into the county of 2000 (‘a central estimate’) hawfinches from the continent. Usually very elusive, even secretive, they were easy to see wherever there were hornbeams whose seeds are a favoured food. Despite no doubt much searching, few made it to the forest where this tree is scarce.

Birds are a relatively obvious barometer of environmental change and the forest is fortunate to have so many people keeping an eye on them and reporting their observations. There’s a vast range of work the conservators and forest staff do to keep it at its best. That includes emergency help such as attending road accidents and deer collisions as well as the preservation and enhancement of the forest’s walks, rides, car parks and open spaces. www.easydonate.org/ASHD001 Take part in the world’s largest wildlife survey with the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, 25th – 27th January. Just choose an hour any time over the three days and enjoy time with nature counting birds. Only count the birds that land in your garden or park, not those flying over. The same birds may land more than once, so you can avoid double counting by recording the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total number you count over the hour. This will help to the RSPB to understand the current situation with birds in the UK. See RSPB.org.uk.

JANUARY FACTS 1. The Anglo-Saxons called January “Wulfmonath” (wolf-month) as it was the month hungry wolves came scavenging at people’s doors.

2. The Romans named it January after Janus, the God of gateways and beginnings. Janus had two heads so he could look in both directions, back at the old year and forward towards the new year.

JANUARY QUOTE “The shortest day has passed, and whatever nastiness of weather we may look forward to in January and February, at least we notice that the days are getting longer. Minute by minute they lengthen out. It takes some weeks before we become aware of the change. It is imperceptible even as the growth of a child, as you watch it day by day, until the moment comes when with a start of delighted surprise we realize that we can stay out of doors in a twilight lasting for another quarter of a precious hour.”

3. The first recorded reference to a “January sale” in the UK was in 1865. 4. January is the coldest month of the year. February nights are colder in England but not Scotland – we couldn’t tell you why!

5. The birthstone for January is the garnet; the flower is the carnation.

The White Squirrels of Sussex By Claire Brimacombe Background

©paul wheelers

One crisp, but sunny morning in November 2018, my husband and I set out on one of our favourite walks, which starts at the beautifully quaint village of Alfriston, down the Cuckmere Valley. Walking along the winding River Cuckmere, we were stopped in our tracks by what I now know to be an albino squirrel. It ran swiftly across our path, and scurried up a tree. I had no idea that there was such a thing! I felt really fortunate to have seen one and from that day forward, I developed a keen interest in this beautiful creature and set out to understand more about them. Research I discovered there are just 50 thought to be in the country, with a 1 in 100,000 chance of an albino squirrel being born. But over the past few years, there had been several sightings of white or albino squirrels within Sussex in particular. Even though there were a number of newspaper articles, nobody seemed to be recording them. I wanted to understand why there appeared to be such a high concentration in Sussex.

To assist, I set up the ‘White Squirrels of Sussex’ website and social media accounts to share sightings and photos. People started sharing evidence with interest, fascination and adoration. Albino squirrels are a spirit animal and are thought to bring you good luck! What is a White Squirrel? Almost all are an albino version of the grey squirrel, although there have been recently been sightings of white ‘red’ squirrels in Scotland. There is another ‘Leucism’ type - a condition which causes grey squirrels to have a partial loss of pigmentation affecting the skin and hair, but not the eyes. White squirrels are highly selected against, as predators like it when their prey is highlighted. I now have approximately 150 separate sightings recorded, the majority are grey albino squirrels and mainly within Sussex, Kent and Surrey.

Ashdown House

There have been several sightings in this area over the past few years, including in the grounds of Forest Row school Ashdown House, as well as sightings in parks and cemeteries of East Grinstead at the end of October 2019.

THE WHITE SQUIRRELS OF SUSSEX CONTINUED

In November 2019, Rebecca Wheatley sent me a message to say ‘a white squirrel ran across the path, through the woods today from Forest Row to Ashurst Wood, closely followed/ chased by three grey squirrels. What really struck me was the bushiness of his tail and unbelievable whiteness of his coat - not muddy at all!’.

White Squirrels of Sussex has recently been a feature on BBC South East Today and BBC Sussex Radio. I continue to gather sightings and am hoping to help wildlife experts and scientists to understand more about them and particularly why there seem to be more in this particular area.

New Year Resolutions

Anyone?

that it is the repetition of a behaviour within a consistent context which builds a habit. It depends on the person and the habit they are trying to embed, but aim for that 66 days and see if that becomes a new permanent lifestyle choice. As the January ‘reality’ sets in, it’s a time to reflect on what we want to accomplish and changes we want to make this year. The question is, can we stick to them? These days we don’t have enough time in our packed 21st century schedules and it’s true we try to squeeze an awful lot in… but stepping back and looking at what we are ACTUALLY doing helps us to see where changes can possibly be made. Little things can be changed but it’s not always easy to spot unless you take a step back – January is a great time to do so. In fact, a few years ago, research was made into the process of habit formation in day to day life. 96 volunteers chose an eating, drinking or activity behaviour to carry out daily. They completed a self-report habit index each day and recorded whether they carried out the behaviour or not. The time it took for this behaviour to become a habit ranged from 18 – 254 days, with the average being 66 days. This study shows

For instance, if you’re trying to get the gym into your daily routine, keep the time of day you go consistent, i.e. always go on the way to or from work. Don’t worry if you miss one session. The study showed that missing one opportunity to perform the behaviour did not materially affect the habit formation process. There are many ways we can throw off all habits and encourage new ones. The most important thing is don’t overpunish yourself if you can’t do it all at once… acknowledge the little changes and try to improve on these. Putting yourself down too much, often means you end up abandoning the whole thing. When we try to teach a child to do something, we have to use patience and encouragement as going in too hard often produces the opposite effect. So, try to treat yourself the same way! Encourage and acknowledge the little changes and soon they will become the bigger changes we were hoping for.

Whatever your plans for 2020 we’d like to wish you the very best of luck.
