Riding for Brooke The second Ashdown Forest Sponsored Ride is taking place this year on the 19th September, setting off from Pippingford Park, near Nutley. This is a 7 or 10 mile ride over Ashdown Forest following a marked trail. There are some beautiful views towards the downs, riding through heathland and woodland. Marshalls will be in positions along the way to help with road crossings.

There are no jumps but some nice grassy stretches ideal for a canter. This is a fantastic opportunity to follow a route on the Ashdown Forest, riding here is otherwise by permit only from the conservators. We have ample parking at Pippingford and we have the Farmyard Kitchen catering van in attendance from Turners Hill offering delicious burgers and other food/ drinks. Walkers are also able to take part. We will again be supporting Brooke, action for working horses and donkeys. Butterflies of Ashdown Forest
Anyone visiting Ashdown Forest recently will not have failed to see the myriad and numerous butterflies gracing the landscape this Summer. For those wanting to learn more, we bring you some indepth information on these wonderful creatures.
Silver-Studded Blue (Found Nowhere Else In Sussex)
Males are blue with a dark border. Females are brown with a row of red spots. Undersides are brown-grey with black spots, a row of orange spots, and small greenish flecks on outer margin. Males are similar to the Common Blue, which lacks greenish spots. This small butterfly is found mainly in heathland where the silvery-blue wings of the males provide a marvellous sight as they fly low over the heather. The females are brown and far less conspicuous but, like the male, have distinct metallic spots on the hindwing. In the late afternoon the adults often congregate to roost on sheltered bushes or grass tussocks. Butterfly Conservation priority: Medium UK BAP status: Priority Species
Green Hairstreak
The Green Hairstreak holds its wings closed, except in flight, showing only the green underside with its faint white streak. The extent of this white marking is very variable; it is frequently reduced to a few white dots and may be almost absent. Males and females look similar and are most readily told apart by their behaviour: rival males may be seen in a spiralling flight close to shrubs, while the less conspicuous females are more often encountered while laying eggs. Although this is a widespread species, it often occurs in small colonies and has undergone local losses in several regions. Butterfly Conservation priority: Medium

Purple Emperor
This magnificent butterfly flies high in the tree-tops of well-wooded landscapes in central-southern England where it feeds on aphid honeydew and tree sap. The adults are extremely elusive and occur at low densities over large areas. The males occasionally descend to the ground, usually in mid-morning, where they probe for salts either from road surfaces or from animal dung. The Purple Emperor declined steadily during the twentieth century and is now restricted to some of the larger woods in southern England. There has been a recent slight re-expansion in some areas. Restricted to large woods in southern England where they spend much of their time in the treetops. Females resemble the White Admiral, but have an orange-ringed eyespot under the forewing. Food for the Soul
Dear Readers, I’m sure you know that the gardens that usually open for the National Garden Scheme have been closed for most of the summer, due to the pandemic. Last month saw quite a few begin to open their garden gates for prebooked visits. At this time of writing, this month will see Penns in the Rocks near Groombridge open for 5 consecutive afternoons between 2pm and 5pm for pre-booked appointment times only. The dates are Monday 17th to Friday 21st August. There will be no refreshments served but you will be able to take your own picnic and sit on the tables and chairs provided in the courtyard. Rapkyns Nursery from Heathfield will be on hand selling plants. Tickets for these visits will be available to purchase on the website, www.ngs.org.uk from first thing on Monday 10th
August for the early part of the week tickets and again from Monday 17th August for the end of that week. You will be able to book a 30-minute timeslot but will be able to stay as long as you want up until the 5pm closing time. Just log on select your timeslot, pay by card and either print your ticket or produce evidence on your mobile phone. ‘East Grinstead Town Gardens’ sees six gardens opening on Sunday 16th August: 7 Nightingale Close, 16 Musgrave Avenue, 27 & 29 Mill Way, 35 Dorset Avenue and the Imberhorne Allotments. Established gardens, displaying a mix of planting: shrubs, perennials, dahlias, annuals, tubs and baskets. Three are past winners of EG in Bloom Best Front Garden.16 Musgrave Avenue has a thriving vegetable garden: 7 Nightingale Close is on heavy clay in a frost pocket going down to a stream
(no access), plus a potager and collection of bonsai. 35 Dorset Avenue has an eclectic mix of garden rooms and soft fruit. Imberhorne Allotments consist of 80 plots with a diverse mix of plantings: grape vines, fruit, flowers and a community orchard. Limited teas will be served at Musgrave Avenue and there will be plant sales at some properties. Full details and tickets on sale on the website on Monday 10th August. In the event that other garden owners in the area decide to open, you can check every Monday morning on the scheme’s website for updates. The scheme has been promoting a number of gardens “virtual tours” through the summer months too, all of which can also be viewed on their website. Crowborough Rock Snake After the love and care from the local community and specifically the children of Crowborough, in creating the wonderful rock snake, the Town Council have decided to make a permanent feature to remember this time period and the community creation that came to fruition.
A proposal has been submitted to have the stones installed on the triangular area of Chapel Green. The proposal is for a low, semicircular wall displaying the stones, so they can be viewed at leisure. Surrounding the feature, a forgetme-not and lavender maze will be planted, adding to the sensory experience and ambience.

The BBC features Forest Row artist and two artists were chosen out of the three to create a commission. A BBC film crew came to film Gill in her studio and sketching on the Ashdown Forest. Of the two final artists, Gill’s work was chosen by the clients for pride of place in their home.
Last month local Forest Row artist Gill Bustamante appeared in episode 12 of the BBC One series ‘Home is Where the Art Is’ (it can be viewed on BBC iplayer). Each episode sees three UK artists competing to win a commission from clients wanting a bespoke piece of art for their home. Each artist specialises in a different medium, such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, etc. Gill, who draws much of her inspiration from the beautiful surrounding area, including Ashdown Forest, won the commission. Initially the three artists visited the client’s home near London and spent the day being filmed as they studied the art and other objects in the house get an idea of what their mystery clients might like. They were aided by a brief which helped with their proposal. They then meet the clients
at the studio in Manchester, bringing sample works to present to give an idea of what could be created. Each artist was interviewed by TV presenter Nick Knowles

Pasta ratatouille bake recipe Simple to make and delicious to eat.
Method
Ingredience
Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan oven 160°C/gas mark 4.
• 200g macaroni • 1 tbsp olive oil
Cook the macaroni according to pack instructions, then drain. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large saucepan, then cook the onion and garlic slowly until tender and golden.
• 2 medium onions, chopped • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tsp dried oregano (or fresh)
Stir in the herbs, tomatoes, courgettes, beans and stock. Simmer for 5 minutes.
• 1 tsp dried basil (or fresh) • 4 tomatoes, chopped • 4 courgettes, sliced • 200g green beans • 125ml vegetable or chicken stock • 25g vegetarian hard cheese, grated • 1 pinch ground black pepper
COMPETITION
Combine the pasta and vegetables, and season with black pepper. Transfer to a baking dish and sprinkle the cheese on top. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Make this recipe in summer when tomatoes, courgettes and green beans are at their seasonal best – and cheapest.

A September Spring Clean Wealden District Council is supporting the Great British September Clean, taking place from Friday 11th to Sunday 27th, September. It's a good reason for anyone who's been stuck indoors to get out in the fresh air and socialise in a safe and managed environment. People wishing to take part can contact the council by email at springclean@wealden.gov.uk. Earlier this year Wealden provided over 30 groups with litter picking equipment in preparation for the Great British Spring Clean which had to be postponed. Different groups can litter pick different parts of the same village or town. Anyone interested in joining the Great British September Clean should keep up to date with the Keep Britain Tidy website.
