Final Major Project Natasya Lund.

My Final Major Project For my final major project, I will be creating my own fashion magazine. It will be based on high street fashion and street style. For this project, I will be coming up with the name, articles and ideas for the photo-shoots which will be included in my magazine. I am looking to create my own look with this magazine but also keep a little sophistication to it.

Company is a monthly fashion, lifestyle and celebrity magazine published in the United Kingdom.

My main inspiration for this project is Company magazine because I like the layout of each page and how they produce such a colourful magazine however keep it looking like a professional fashion magazine.

It’s target audience are females who have an interest in the articles including fashion news, celebrity interviews and real life stories as well.

I will be including photo-shoots done by myself for the different articles: current trends, key pieces of the season, this generation article and make-up trends.

The magazine has been publishing for 35 years now and usually compared to American ‘Seventeen’ magazine, then recently been told me be a fresher and edgier ‘Teen Vogue’. Company will be my main influence for my magazine due to the style of the whole magazine and the target market that I’m aiming to appeal to.

My aim for this magazine is to create a fun, stylish magazine in a scrap book style with a sophisticated and professional edge. Throughout my magazine, I will be changing the looks of each article to change things up however, keeping in mind the brief theme. It’s all about capturing street style and having researched into current trends of Spring/Summer 2013, to reflect the different trends strongly through photo-shoots. I will also have a make-up, travel and music feature within this magazine so I have a range of articles, all relating to fashion but just something different to read when going through the magazine.

Also this is a magazine I am quite familiar with as I collect it and the fashion articles aren’t too high fashion which is the direction I’d like to go with my magazine. Another thing is that they have published street style articles which appeal to a young audience like myself (18 year old young female). For my magazine, I’d like to include a lot of street style because I believe that fashion is a tool people use to express themselves and there is a lot out there to be noticed and recognised.

Front Cover Analysis -

It was founded in 1939 therefore is an older magazine to look into however, sppeals to the same target audience but can appeal to an older audience of women as it includes articles with attracts a more middle aged woman such as lifestyle and fashion issues and tips.

I chose this cover because it is the type of look I’m going for my magazine. Also this was a special street style edition which is what my magazine is focusing on.

Current trends - which is a must in every fashion magazine, and the subtitle ends with a hashtag ‘#soundsgoodtous’ which adds wit to the header.

Make-up trends - an addition to fashion magazines giving tips on how to just finish off an outfit.

Main header ‘street style edited’ appealing to a wide range of people as it’s a high street edition.

Carefully chosen fonts and colours used on the cover so nothing clashes and each header is noticeable and bold as the magazine wants everything to be noticed as someone picks it up and has a quick look.

Music articles included as well, written above ‘Florence’ to give a hint on who she is and what she’s all about.

Informs who is on the front cover just incase anybody is unaware.

Celebrity articles in a fashion magazine attracts a wider audience with the range of topics within a magazine.

Offers for the readers

Simple studio shot of Florence in the centre of the cover,

Plain background letting the headers stand out and have Florence the main focus of the cover.

Glamour is a women’s magazine which was first called ‘Glamou of Hollywood’. Unlike Company magazine, it publishes in several countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Spain, Russia, Greece, Poland, South Africa, Brazil, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, the Netherlands and more.

I’ve chosen to look into Glamour as it is a more sophisticated magazine and with my magazine, even though its a street style edition, I’d like to keep a little sophistication in there. This magazine again isn’t based on high fashion and I think I can take some influences and inspiration from the layout and written articles to reflect my ideas, articles and fashion styling with composure.

Front Cover Analysis -

Glamour as a magazine has changed the layout of their front cover over the years, and throughout the years you notice the way that the creativity and boldness of the front covers improve each time. Each cover, rather than being quite editorial, it’s a photograph of a celebrity smiling which reflects the magazine itself and attracts a wider audience as it is an edgy, editorial shot.

Grazia is an Italian magazine which publish their magazine internationally; France, Serbia, Australia, United Kingdom, Thailand, Spain, Poland, Bahrain, Greece, Portugal, Japan, the Netherlands, Indonesia, India, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, and Germany. The title means grace in Italian which suggests that the readers would be sophisticated, and probably due to the content and price of the magazine would range between 22-35. It’s first ever issue was published in 1936 and has been a successful monthly fashion, lifestyle and celebrity magazine ever since. This is quite a different type of magazine as I believe that it appeals to more of an older audience than ‘Company’ and ‘Glamour’. Personally, I wouldn’t collect Grazia because it doesn’t appeal to me. However, I am researching it as it is good to have a variety of different rsearch to help you as much as you can to be creative whilst being aware of different ways of appealing to a wide range target market. I like how they have included that they are Britain’s No.1 glossy, which tells people that if they purchase this magazine, that they are going for the best and reflects their succcess as a magazine as a whole.

Front Cover Analysis -

Grazia vary their front cover designs quite a lot. They use a range of different types of photographs of celebrities; some are edgy, editorial shots, some red carpet or candid photographs or a themed front cover which captures the fun side of the magazine. Grazia is dissimilar to other magazines due to its typeface and use of colour. The font used is very sophisticated, reflecting the target audience, and is usually in white which is simple and elegant but catches the eye.

Street Style What is it?

It’s in the name, street style is basically, style on the streets. Many magazines have expanded street style having published a special edition based on this. People have many different interpretations of ‘street style’, some think that its all about streetwear, others think that it means the streets are people’s runway and the rest have a basic knowledge of what it is.

Street Style Blogs Blogging is becoming a big part of the fashion industry; I believe that there are blogs about anything at all, its a great way for companies or individuals to communicate themselves across to the public. There are so many street style blogs out there, worldwide. I will be researching into street style blogs to give me inspiration on how to document photographs I take for my street style based magazine.

VOGUE vs. COMPANY Vogue and Company are both very different magazines, one being older than the other and one being a high fashion magazine and the other being more based on the high street fashion.

It’s in the name; this blog is photographs of random people from the streets which they have scouted and recognised that they feel need to be published onto the blog. Also includes links to other sites, brands and blogs from around the world.

This blog is based within New York and San Francisco, like the other blogs, they keep track of street style from both cities. There is a variety of looks as both cities are different with their sense of fashion.

Kalee Hewlett

... is a renowned presenter and fashion stylist. She has been working in the industry for many years and worked with many different clients from different backgrounds such a tv, film, media, events and photography. Having worked with a broad range of clients, with her increasing editorial work, Kalee Hewlett is inevitably getting herself noticed. Not only is she a stylist though, with her warm personality and knowledge of fashion, she has had work with presenting and hosting. She is regularly labelled as ‘the one to watch’ with a lot planned for to further her successful career in this industry. I like her work because her portfolio is quite varied, as in that even though she is known for her editorial work, she has also done some commercial projects, however, she keeps her signature look within all her work. Also, when looking through her work, I notice that the simplicity of her styling within photographs come across so strong which I find important because as a stylist, I believe that you should be able to create a diverse range of styles whether it is completely crazy or very simple. Her editorial work is very inspiring and this is what kind of direction I’d like to go with the photography and styling within my fashion magazine. I’d like to portray a variety of styles like Hewlett does, so there is always something new on the each page of my magazine. Keep the reader interested.

Natasha Wray Freelance stylist, who has worked at Elle Magazine for 4 years. She has worked editorial projects with clients such as ELLE magazine, Wonderland, Stylist, and Marie Claire, she works with magazines, photographers and also celebrities. Another top stylist based in London. Natasha Wray’s styling is very unique with the way she puts outfits together and adding the acceessories too. Creating stunning outfits by combining different patterned garments and colour clashing, but making it work. For my magazine, I’d like to style outfits which people wouldn’t think of styling themselves, I want people to look at my styling within the magazine and be intrigued how I’ve thought of that idea but making it work well together as an outfit.

Viviane Sassen

Viviane Sassen is a photographer known for her beautiful fine art photography from Africa. However, she has recently been noticed for her fashion photography which is equally as stunning. Born in Amsterdam, Viviane Sassen then lived in Kenya at a young age, however, she is now a Netherlands based photographer. Her fashion work borrows much from her fine art—obscured faces, extraordinary colour, and these make wonderful magazine spreads. She is an inspiration as her outlook on tic, therefore this is what I’d like to photography within my magazine. I want which will make people look twice at it fashion image.

A photo-shoot that quite a few people can relate to.

This photo-shoot will be put into my magazine as an article based on our generation and the career aspects they are aiming for however aren’t confident enough to go towards that direction. So therefore the article is going to be about how the magazine gives them a chance to ‘live their dream’ and participate in their own photo-shoot. I wanted to create this article to add a little reality to my magazine rather than just fashion because there are always small articles about real-life people which adds variety to the issue.

I still want to be able to express my own significant style to this photo-shoot with the styling but leave the rest of it to her as this is her chance to ‘live her dream’ as I said with my first photo-shoot. It’s the same idea but a female version, hopefully I’ll result with strong fashion images.

Editing Processes

Using a simple Picasa editing programme, I found that these photos didn’t need much editing just a little enhancement, therefore used the cinemascope filter then tuned the fill light, highlights and shadows.

Then for some of the photographs I found that Picasa didn’t edit the photos like I wanted them so I used Photoshop to have more control over the filters and effects and this is an example of a photograph I edited on Photoshop.

Editing Process

For these photographs, I again used the simple Picasa Editing Software and just enhanced the photographs as the focus wasn’t on the photography but on the outfits themselves. I selected the cinemascope filter then experimented with the tuning filter, once I finally did the filters, I went on to doing the collages that will feature in my magazine showing off the different outfits for the different occasions.

I have chosen 4 trends to focus on and even though it will be a very simple, white background close-up photoshoot, I will be styling the hair for each trend and also doing the make-up and photography. To make it an interesting article to look at, I am going to capture my model pulling different facial expressions and creating a collage on a couple of pages in my magazine to make it more fun and less serious, however keep in mind with the sophistication throughout the magazine.

Front Cover Trials

Magazine Title Fonts Impact

Gill Sans Ultra Bold

Broadway

Here is where I experimented with the most colour and text following inspirations from Company Magazine as they’re front covers are very much full of different articles to draw you in.

Bauhaus 93

Bodoni MT Black

Showcard Gothic

Tekton Pro Ext

Bernard MT Condensed

These are my font trials for my magazine title. On the left, are my first trials of my actual magazine name, however I didn’t think either ‘Mist’ or ‘Elixir’ was a strong enough magazine name, Therefore as I was scrolling through my magazine at the time and spotted ‘The Editor’ on one of the pages, then after repeating that over again, I found that it made quite an effective name, simple but sophisticated which was my aim in the first place. Afterwards, I repeated the same fonts to trial out ‘The Editor’, also experimenting with other fonts, however in the end I chose ‘Bodoni MT Black’ as my front cover title font because it’s bold, suits the photograph and style of the magazine front cover, and importantly, sophisticated which is my main presentation aim throughout my magazine.

Here is the same front cover as the left but I’ve changed fonts of articles and colours as I found the other cover didn’t look professional and that the colours and fonts didn’t suit background photograph and articles. My main inspiration for these trials is Company Magazine.

Again, here I kept the articles as they are and just experimented with the fonts and colours to suit the background photograph and Spring/Summer season.

When I started trialing my front cover, I was still using the magazine name ‘Mist’ as I hadn’t come across the final name yet. These are my front cover trials, I went through 3 main trials, getting inspiration from past magazine covers. Throughout my process in creating my final front cover, I went through different font trials - both with the font and colour of the text, different placing, the amount of text I should have on the front cover; however the easiest thing to do was selecting the photograph because I already had a clear idea of what I wanted.

The articles I chose for these trials are based on the main ones inside my magazine, I wanted to advertise them enthusiastically but keeping it sophisticated as in how Company does on their front covers.

After all the trial, I decided that I didn’t want any of the articles after having a look at it properly, I didn’t find it made an effective fashion magazine front cover. I gradually deleted each article to see which ones looked best to keep. And resulted with just the Spring/Summer trends article on the left side and the main title ‘Street Style Takeover’.

I chose to do this because comparing my cover to other magazines, my background photograph is an outdoor shot whereas, the magazines I’ve looked into have studio shots therefore aren’t as busy so can include the several articles on that plain background. So in result, my final magazine cover is plainly just my photograph, main title of the magazine and one article which I find makes an effective magazine cover.

Firstly, as I had in mind that I want my magazine in a scrap book style but portrayed with sophistication. So I went to find a binder image to place on the left side of my contents page and this is where I started with my contents page. As I was in the process of my magazine, I didn’t know the page numbers or amount so I couldn’t write a contents yet. Then with my editor’s page, I wrote a brief letter for the readers explaining what is included in the magazine, adding a little enthuisiasm to it as I am not aiming to create a high fashion magazine, I want to create a fun and sophisticated fashion magazine. This is my final front cover using my final chosen name ‘The Editor’.

I didn’t quite like the look of the binder for the contents page, I didn’t find that it suited the look of the magazine, I wanted to make it more exciting. So from this thought, I found this beautiful rainbow clouds image and thought that it’d make a good background for my contents page. However the image was too small so with that problem, I came to a result to reflect a copy of the image to create a larger image for the background.

The Topshop magazine on the left was my main inspiration in my process of finding a way to finalise my magazine cover. Comparing it to Company magazine front covers, it is just very plain but still tells what it needs to tell to the readers of the magazine. Therefore, this magazine also helped me decide to reduce the amount of articles on my front cover. This contents page is from a Topshop magazine and I chose this to inspire me with my contents page as it’s not any ordinary contents page, I like the layout of it and the minimalistic look to it even though they have used different fonts and sizes.

Also with my editor’s page, I thought the ‘Yours truly, the editor’ was too large and took over the written piece itself so I reduced the size and added a photograph of myself as I see in many magazine that it features a photograph of the magazine editor.

Contents and Editor’s Page

n o i t a r i p s In Here are my final contents and editor’s note pages - I like how the final outcome as resulted. Each page is so simple but subtly introduces to what my magazine is about; the rainbow background on my contents page hopefully gives off that it is a fun and colourful magazine, then with my editor’s page; it’s a very simple page with a note on it but when reading it, I am not communicating to my readers in a serious way, I am being enthusiastic and hopefully that will reflect the personality of the magazine itself. My magazine’s aim is to be fun, sophisticated, created in a scrap style but in a professional manner.

Final Contents and Editor’s Page

I took these pages out of different editions of Company Magazine for inspiration for my Spring/Summer trends pages. I took 3 different pages - a title page, clothes page and another title page which is Company’s own photography and styling. This will help me with how to lay out my pages and create strong trends pages.

Making of the Title Pages Here I am showing how I created my Spring/Summer trends title pages. On the left, is my process in cropping catwalk shots so I can just include the model in my design idea. I started by getting rid of the background of the shot on Photoshop, then importing the photograph on Microsoft Word, I selected the remove background tool so when I place it onto my page, there will just be the model figure, without any background at all on the image. On the right are my initial magazine sketch ideas for this title page, and I finalised my choice according to the shaping and layout of the page itself.

For an introduction to my Spring/Summer tremds photo-shoots, I created another title page, more-like a contents page. Again, I went onto the DaFont website to create the title. This time due to the size of my page, I had to create 3 seperate parts of the title so then that would allow me to place it on successfully. Initial magazine sketches for my Spring/Summer Trends title page

When using the remove background tool, I had to select areas I’d like keeping to create that cut out effect for that scrap book look on this title page.

I went onto this website because it provides a wide range of different fonts of different themes. I chose the Honey Script font because the fact it looks like handwriting but also had that Spring/Summer look. I thought that it was perfect to use throughout my magazine for titles to keep that theme going. Also I think that I used a font creating website called ‘Da- it suits the scrap book idea I want to do for my Font’ to find my title. magazine.

My next step was finding a background, having the scrap book theme in mind, I searched for different notebook backgrounds to find the final background I’ve used for the page. Then, taking inspiration from the contents page, to link the two together, I chose to use different fonts and sizes, then added Spring/Summer ‘13 runway photographs as backgrounds for a couple of the titles to add a bit of photography on the page.

Inspiration

For my trends photo-shoot pages, I’d choose the strongest shots from my photo-shoots and apply them onto the pages portraying the styling and photography the best way possible through presentation and editing of the shots. For example, these pages I’ve taken from magazines are just very simply the photographs stuck onto the pages as they are which I will be doing as well but also looking to create layers on pages sucb as backgrounds, more images and bordering. I’d like to be creative with my magazine pages as even though I do want a sophisticated magazine, I also don’t want to be too serious, I’d like my pages to be fun and effective, creating that professional scrap book look throughout.

These are some examples of my final trends pages. I started off going by the inspiration from the magazines and applying the photographs on the page as they are, however, due to my scrap book theme I added catwalk photographs and backgrounds according to each trend. This adds some interest to the pages rather than just plainly viewing the photo-shoot photographs that I have taken. Then with the other bits such as the titles, I kept with one type of font as it makes clear that it’s all one article which also keeps it professional as it doesn’t mix up the magazine too much.

Inspiration

Ideas

These are my final trend pages reflecting the four trends I have chosen.

Here are examples of trend pages from different magazines. They are all themed due to the trend, I got two different types of trend pages because I wanted to get a middle image of what both of them combined would look like, as I feel like one is too cut and stick style but the other is too simple and professional - for my magazine, I’d like to get inbetween that and create professional cut and stick style trend pages. All these elements following by my scrap book look theme for my magazine.

Above are my initial magazine ideas for my trends pages, I have kept my mind simple due to how I have set the brief for my magazine - to create a sophisticated but fun fashion magazine with simple scrap book layouts. After experimenting with the different ideas, I found that some didn’t look as I expected, I ended up choosing the third design idea as it is something I can play around with and create my own look for my magazine.

For each of the pages I have chosen a background which links to the trend however faded it as the focus of these pages are the clothes and celebrities wearing the trends. I’ve done this because when people are reading fashion magazines, they are not focused on backgrounds, they are interested in the clothes. With each of the pages, I have carefully picked clothes which are linked to the brief of the magazine and also all look good grouped together on the page. And I think I have successfully done that.

London Fashion Week I decided to do an article on London Fashion Week as making a street style based magazine, London Fashion Week is one of the best places to go to for that reason. Instead of just focusing on the street style, I also absorbed the atmosphere of it to be able to do a brief explanation of what London Fashion Week is like. However, without going into the actual fashion shows themselves.

I collected these pages from Company Magazine issues for inspiration towards my ‘Key Trends’ photo-shoot and magazine spreads.

Final layouts

Titles created on the DaFont website - keeping the same theme throughout magazine

I chose these pages from the layout of the model’s photographs to the poses. The photography is very simple however, expresses the key pieces in the shoot stronger and with the different poses, it makes the simplicity of the pages a little more exciting - seeing the clothes in different points of views.

n o i t a r i p s In

Above are my initial sketches of ideas for my ‘Key Pieces’ magazine spreads. With these designs, instead of just choosing one whole design, I took one idea from one design and then another element from another design to blend the two together for my final pages.

Here is an example of a final spread for the ‘Key Pieces’ article - where I have styled four different outfits off one piece specialising for different occasions. I think that the final elements I chose out of my initial designs were the right choices as the spread itself, I think looks strong and effective. Also, another important factor of the photographs are the poses and I’m glad that I was able to capture a good variety of poses to portray the outfits in a range of views for the magazine reader. I then went onto doing the titles of each occasion and I didn’t want them to be plain and boring but simple and fun, so I translated the occasions into phrases/sayings but also keeping in mind that it is obvious what the occasion is.

Above is a street style page out of Company Magazine and to the right, are my magazine sketches of initial ideas for the ‘From London to Paris’ double page spread. Company Magazine is well known for capturing a lot of street style, which is why they are my main inspiration for my magazine as it is a special street style issue. I chose the top two designs for my street style pages because I feel like the layout of them are more professional than the bottom two which is what you have to keep in mind with a magazine. Also with the lined and grid paper backgrounds, it all links in with the rest of the magazine, keeping that theme going throughout.

Street Style Article Inspiration

My final street style pages doesn’t feature writing but I don’t find that is the important factor of these pages. These are focused on people’s styles, and the difference between two cities, also reflecting similarities too. I like how I was able to capture different styles from both cities to express how people portray their personalities through their styles. To add colour to the pages, I chose to place the flags as a faded background, also to help represent the two cities.

Final Street Style Pages

For my Paris pages, instead of looking into fashion magazines, I went on a different route onto looking into travel and lifestyle magazines to get an idea of layouts and inspiration for my pages. I did this because I am featuring a travel feature for vintage shopping in Paris and having visited the places myself, I am able to describe and explain honestly about the location I have chosen to put into my magazine. I am only looking to have a paragraph of writing onto these pages as I have images which show off the locations strongly.

The pages I have chosen to inspire me feature different layouts which helps me be creative with my two pages. I like how they all look similar however are about completely different places and for different magazines. But they are all for travel and lifestyle magazines so I’d be going for a different look and creating more fashionable travel pages.

Ideas

Final layouts

Inspiration I collected together some inspiration for my Make-up Trends pages. I took them from two different magazines. I am looking to create a different type of make-up spread in a magazine, hence why I have chosen these pages to inspire me. On the left is a collage of a girl doing several expressions in different positions, and with my make-up spread, I’d like to express the trends in seperate collages similarly to the one on the left. Then for the page to inform readers of the current Spring/Summer ‘13 makeup trends, I like the way the pages below are scattered and random, which creates that scrap book effect therefore I am looking to create something like that but with less samples of the make-up spread everywhere.

As shown, I have chosen two designs from seperate pairs as I liked the elements from them the best. However, on my final pages - I decided to convert the title ‘Vintage in Paris’ into French as I feel suits the fashion travel pages and a little more interesting. I have changed around the imagery on the first page from the initial ideas shown because of the background I’ve chosen, I had to move around the photography so the Eiffel Tower is shown but also keeping in mind how to lay everything out professionally.

After looking at the inspiration, I was able to create initial ideas for my pages with referring back to fashion magazines for layout and presentation. For these pages, I wanted to make clear that straight away when you come onto the pages that they are about vintage shopping in Paris without having to read anything. Just informing readers through imagery.

With the second page, as I said, I’d just write a paragraph for each page and just portray the location purely through photographs - which I have done for ‘The March Dauphine’ page. Unlike the first page, I haven’t included an address because it is a well known flea market therefore is easy to find online, however the other vintage stores I have featured aren’t so popular and well known so I have provided addresses for each of the stores I visited along with a map which can be found on the website. I like how both these pages have a different set out and colour schemes however still go together as a pair to feature in my magazine as a small travel section. Having gone to the locations, I think this benefits the pages as I have got primary research and provided my own photography.

I sketched out some initial ideas of what I want my make-up trends page to look like. I’ve done four different layouts and titles as well so there was a range of elements I could choose from. I chose the second design as I like the mindmap look and I think is the best way to group things together without making it look crowded. Also I reckon suits my scrap book theme the best, however I wasn’t keen on the title so I took a title from the third design as it’s not too serious and grabs more attention than ‘Make-up ‘13’

Even though these are double page spreads, they will still help me in my process of creating my music page. I like these pages because of the effortless look they have to them, it all looks like a cut and stick job but with sophistication which is the direction I’m heading with the whole of my magazine.

This is my final make-up trends page and it has turned out exactly the way I wanted it to be. I took the elements from my initial ideas and developed them together to create my final. I chose four but very different trends to have a variety so the photographs don’t all look the same. I have scattered the images and paragraphs as I think that it best suits the scrap book magazine theme.

Both of these spreads are for different things but the reason I’ve chosen them to help inspire me is exactly that reason, they’re different which will allow my mind to brain storm several ideas off of one.

Music Feature I N I T I A L For my initial ideas, I already had in mind that I wanted to group genders etc seperately so I can equally inform the reader of as many new and upcoming artists. So with that, I created four different designs portraying the grouping in different layouts. I didn’t include backgrounds because I wasn’t on looking using them for this feature, I just wanted the thumbnails of the artists to stand out, and the focus to be them.

Social Networking Facebook

Final Spread Above is my final spread for my music feature, originally, I wasn’t on planning to do a double page spread but when working on the page, I found it was too much for one page so I decided to expand it. Rather than having three columns on my page, I left my first page as Girls vs. Boys and based the other page on just groups. Also, another thing I have changed is my thoughts on backgrounds etc, when I completed the page without the music paper faded behind, it just didn’t look finished which I wouldn’t want in my magazine - an unfinished look. Then thinking about my scrap book theme, I create these lines at the bottom of the page, to finish it off, expressing the beat and the vocals of a music piece. I wanted to make everything link but not in such an obvious way and I think that I have managed to successfully do that.

Twitter

As a fashion magazine, it is important that readers are able to connect with you through social networking sites as they do play a big part in promotion and advertising of a magazine. So therefore, for my magazine, I have chosen the two top social networking sites - Facebook and Twitter to create my pages. Ideally, I’d provide the pages with the latest photographs and updates of our magazine and photo-shoots, then also make sure that the profile photo, cover photo and other visible photographs are up to date with all the newest images. As these pages develop further, I would then create a tumblr which is an easier way to share things and readers to easily view by scrolling through the tumblr app. Also considering how most readers of magazines are using their Smartphone for easy access to view these social networking sites shows that pages like this will have to be updated very frequently or else may lose interest of readers otherwise.

Evaluation My final major project has been definitely been a challenge but I’ve enjoyed it because I was doing everything I love doing, this is something I’d aspire to do is to create my own fashion magazine or even work at a magazine. So I am glad with my choice of project. The goal of this project was to produce both a journal and a final magazine to show my working progress and also have an actual final magazine to look through. And I have successfully managed to complete both. The start of my project; the research introduction was interesting because I was motivated for this project therefore I went and collected quite a bit of research and I think that this is one of my strongest parts of my project. With my brief, it was clear for me what to look into and who to look into and from there I was able to produce some strong research justifying why I looked into that magazine/stylist etc. My second stage of this project is the design development of my magazine. I had to create sketches or digital work of magazine design development which I have done, for each page, I have done initial ideas for each of the articles and explained which elements I have used from those and why. Rven though the sketches are just quick and rough, I feel as if that I didn’t need to show more because in my annotations, I have explained what and why with each of my articles to show development within my magazine. One problem I had at the start of this project was simply trying to think of a magazine name - I went onto google to help me, I looked into different languages and at first I came up with two names ‘Mist’ and ‘Elixir’, however in the end, I came across my editor’s page as I was scrolling through my progress at the time on my magazine and realised there was my new magazine name ‘The Editor’. I was glad I ended up changing the name as I wasn’t sure on the first two anyway, they just didn’t sound like fashion magazine names. After finding this, I was able to complete my front cover. I found that the process of my magazine included a lot of trial and error, as sometimes my magazine would look more like a portfolio rather than a magazine therefore had to edit it many times to create that magazine look. However in the end I managed to cover most things I was aiming to include in my magazine, the only bits I have got missing is the primary research of current trends where I was looking to interview the public on their fashion and style but that was never successful whenever I tried to do so therefore I hadn’t got anything for that. Also the bloggers article I listed in my brief, instead I changed that article into the ‘This Generation’ article as I think that it would make a more interesting section in my magazine, also adding in more of my own styling and photography. Other than those couple of things, I have managed to successfully complete my own fashion magazine. I think that as a project in whole that I haven’t worked so hard for something before however my time management was poor again so even though I have worked hard, I don’t think that the project is as strong as it could be, I do believe that it is strong but it could be stronger if I had managed my time better. I would change my working journal because in my opinion, I definitely prefer my magazine to my journal due to the layout and presentation of everything but then in my working journal I have produced strong research and development of my project, I just feel like that I could’ve improved the presentation of it all. If I could change things, I would definitely improve my working journal’s presentation and then I’d re-take the make-up trends photo-shoot so the different trends look unique, as I find they are my weakest photographs and I’d definitely change that so you could see the change between the different trends. However, other than that, it has been a challenging but enjoyable project and I’d definitely do it again and if I were to do it again, I’d do it completely differently, not because I don’t like my magazine outcome now, I just would experiment with more. I am glad I was able to complete both my working journal amd magazine in time as my time management was estimated wrong. I wouldn’t of wanted to do anything else for my final major project and it has been great being able to focus on styling and photography which is my career aspiration.
