Designer Emily Pilloton and her partner Matt Miller are “Project H Design,” whose job is creating and implementing initiatives for “Humanity, Habitats, Health, and Happiness.”
Their work caught the attention of many people around the world, including a maverick school superintendent in Bertie County, North Carolina—the state’s poorest county and one of the poorest in the country.

Emily and Matt were soon invited to come to Bertie County to help the education official rethink the mission of his schools. After months of work, Matt and Emily pitched the superintendent a radical idea: to take the ‘design thinking’ philosophy and create a high-school curriculum around it. The superintendent was game and the “Studio H” project began. Director Patrick Creadon’s If You Build It chronicles the two-year journey of Emily and Matt and their students, as they remake the idea of hands-on education and deliver so much more than anyone thought possible.

About the filmmaker Patrick Creadon was born in Chicago, went to college at Notre Dame, and earned his Master’s Degree in Cinematography from the American Film Institute. His feature-length directorial debut Wordplay was a breakout hit at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and went on to become one of the top 25 highest grossing documentaries of all time. Patrick’s film I.O.U.S.A., a non-partisan examination of America’s national debt, premiered at Sundance in 2008 and was shortlisted for Best Documentary for the Academy Awards.
