Acclaimed author Alice Walker has lived an amazing life. While much of her journey has informed and helped to create compelling works (The Color Purple and others), her actual life story is truly fascinating and engrossing. Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth tells that story from her birth in a paper thin shack in the cotton fields of Georgia, to her recognition as a key writer of the twentieth century. Walker made history as the first black woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for her groundbreaking novel, The Color Purple. That book is just one chapter in her story. Walker has been a witness to dramatic changes in this country regarding race, feminism, and other social/political changes over the past 50 years. Documentary filmmaker Pratibha Parmar’s film is a penetrating look at the life and art of an artist, a self-confessed renegade, and human rights activist.
