Air Namibia

saga intensifies Marshallino Beukes

Following the downgrading of Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) from Category 9 to Category 5, Air Namibia is now forced to operate its Windhoek – Frankfurt route via Lusaka.

Staff Reporter

The chief executive officer (CEO) and founding member of the Prosperity Group of Companies, Bertus Struwig has confirmed that Prosperity Health has taken over the portfolio of Day 1 Health medical aid members. “The acquisition has been effective since the first of June this year,” Struwig confirms. Talks between Day1 Health and other medical aid firms have been in the process since the end of last year, but the legalities of the contract between Prosperity Health and Day1 has only been finalised at the beginning of July, Struwig says. Prosperity Group will send out a letter today to notify members that they will need to change their payment account numbers to the Prosperity Group banking account number. Struwig said that Prosperity would like their members to do so immediately. This is to ensure that monthly medical aid con-

tributions are paid into the Prosperity Group account number directly. When asked why Prosperity Group did not notify members, Struwig’s response was that they were waiting on the regulatory body to respond. According to Communications Practitioner at NAMFISA, Isack Hamata, any medical company who is entering into negotiations with another company need to inform all their members via email and a public notice through the media. The intentions and issues surrounding the negotiations then need to be raised at their Annual General Meeting (AGM). The company entering into negotiations therefore

needs to email every member and ask them to raise issues that need to be addressed at the AGM. After being raised at the AGM, the company then needs to report back on the issues that were raised. Merging decision contracts between companies can often request a non-disclosure, and if this is the case, only the Competition Commission can answer these questions, Hamata advises. However, every company entering into negotiations need to take steps to inform their members. “Nothing is changing,” Struwig insists, “coverage of members who were on the Day1 medical scheme will continue

as it is.” What will change, is the organisational company – Day1 medical aid members will now automatically fall under the Day1 Prosperity Group account. “We are a much bigger organisation with far more members than the Day1 organisation who only has 600 members, most of whom are in the low-income group living off of state funding,” Struwig commented telephonically. “Prosperity Group has various insurance packages and services, has been running for much longer and has a larger organisational structure. People will benefit from this,” Struwig concluded.

The downgrading followed after an audit by the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCA) on Namibia Airports Company’s (NAC) facilities and the suspension came into effect due to alleged inadequacy of fire and rescue equipment by NCA. NAC owns and manages eight airports in Namibia namely Hosea Kutako, Ondangwa, Rundu, Katima Mulilo, Walvis Bay, Eros, Keetmanshoop and Lüderitz. Negative implications include the take-offs and landing of amongst others, VIAGEM’s A330-200 aircraft, which requires a category 8 airport for landing and take-off. This modus operandi will continue for the next two weeks or until such time that the Namibia Airports Company has fulfilled the requirements, Air Namibia said in a statement. The downgrading of Hosea Kutako Airport has affected all aircraft requiring cate-

gory 7 and higher rescue and firefighting services. Air Namibia did apply to be granted exemption in order to continue its Airbus A330 operations, which was granted on 24 July 2014. However, the latest review by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has reinforced the downgrade and has revoked any exemptions that might have been granted. As a result, Air Namibia can no longer operate the A330-200 fleet in or out of Hosea Kutako Airport until such time that NAC has rectified the shortcomings to the satisfaction of ICAO. Air Namibia, like other airlines operating into this airport with larger aircraft will be negatively impacted by this development. They have issued an apology for the inconvenience caused to travellers, also stating that the situation is outside their control and not of their own making.

The move taken by Old Mutual to integrate businesses in African countries outside South Africa, was a strategic decision and customer driven. Mr Sakaria Nghikembua, managing director, Old Mutual Short-Term Insurance Company (Namibia) said the move changed the ownership of the short term insurance business Mutual and Federal, a

South African company to Old Mutual Holdings Namibia, a 100% Namibia owned company. Nghikembua said at the end of May the organisation finalised the process and then changed the name

to Old Mutual Short-Term Insurance Company of Namibia. The strategic move meant putting all businesses in Namibia under one roof so that the customer has a choice of products under one roof.

“We changed our name, busy changing our brand and our marketing,” he explained adding that their banking facility, is not yet fully integrated into the Namibian company because it is a majority

Veldbrand verwoes rivierbedding Marshallino Beukes

holding subsidiary. “We shared that with our partners here in Walvis Bay and we gave them an update of the name change.” Nghikembua was accompanied by Tracy Eagles, executive for marketing, transformation and customer strategy and Rivo-

nia Kahivere, transformation consultant. Nghikembua emphasised that Old Mutual’s primary driver is the customer, and based on that, the strategy was to not send the customer to different places for the different products, but to avail the services to

the clients and allow them to get all the services from one point. “...By having these companies working together you create better synergies. Prior to integration, Old Mutual had 20 branches and Mutual and Federal had four.

So by integrating the groups, the short term insurance exposure has increased without spending a lot of money. The customer gets more access points and having all products from one point. That way, you treat the customer as king and

you are likely to grow,” Nghikembua said. Commenting on how the change was received by stakeholders he said it was well received by the brokers, employees and the shareholders. “From the brokers’ point of view, it has been very well received and they are our face to the customers. For the employees it has been well received because all of a sudden they are play-

ing in a bigger group in Namibia and are able to advance their careers in the different businesses rather than being stuck in one business. They can go round within the businesses without having to go out and learn. From a career advancement point of view, the integration has been good as well for the employees,” Nghikembua said. The strategy will also

benefit customers as it gives them convenience and choice. The employees benefit from being able to play in a bigger pool career progression wise and good for the share holders because the strategy creates synergies. ” You are able to grow the business without having to grow the expenses,” Nghikembua said.

More SME’s at Namport Erongo Expo Staff Reporter This year’s annual Namport Erongo Business and Tourism Expo, themed ‘Cultivating business for the future’, will be held from 29 October to 1 November. It is the 8th consecutive year that the Namport Erongo Business & Tourism Expo will be hosted aimed at promoting business trade and sustainable development in the Erongo Region. “The Erongo region is one of the preferred tourism as well as business destinations in Namibia,” says Mr Cliff Shikuambi, spokesperson of the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport). “We believe that it is through events like these that we could grow the nature of small business men and women who are starting to undertake new business initiatives,” Shikuambi said. “We’d like

to ensure that we get our upcoming entrepreneurs in the main business environment.” At the launch of this year’s expo, on Tuesday, Namport handed over a cheque for N$350 000 to the organisers. Since 2011, Namport has collectively contributed N$750 000, as the premier sponsor of the Namport Erongo Business and Tourism Expo. The Erongo governor, Mr Cleophas Mutjavikua, the mayor, Mrs Uillika Nambahu, and CEO of Namport Mr Bisey Uirab presented the launch of this year’s expo at a media briefing. This year will be the first time that a 2-day infor-

mation session, geared towards training and informing small to medium enterprises (SME’s), will be held. Expo Studios Namibia, the organisers of the event, was commended for their work in expanding the expo and introducing new platforms to increase SME engagement. The show has experienced exponential growth in terms of the number of both local and international exhibitors, an important aspect for enhancing the region’s economy. “We are looking to break the barrier of 250 exhibitors at this year’s event,” Eddie Stevens, managing member of Expo Studios said.

Handing over the sponsorship cheque The main objectives of the expo include creating a forum to promote valuable regional assets (such as mining, tourism, fish-

ing, marine, etc); creating a platform for regional and national stakeholders to meet; allowing SME’s to promote their products/

Namib Diesel Workers holding a peaceful demonstration

Namib Diesel workers hold peaceful demonstration Mavourlene Gaes Twenty-four employees of the Namib Diesel CC Shipping and Marine Company held a peaceful demonstration outside their company premises on Wednesday. They handed over their petition to the management expressing their dissatisfaction with company management. According to the National leader of Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (MANWU), Shamulele Hilly, who read out the petition on behalf of the workers “there have been numerous meetings between management and staff but there has been no change and the workers are unhappy.” Some of the workers’ complaints were that company benefits are only given to some employees. “We are all aware that it is not a must for the company to provide benefits but what is good for one should be good for all,” she said. She added that another contributing factor is the unjustifiable gap between the salaries of mechanics and their assistants. The workers demanded that the company acknowledges the service they offer, despite their lack of qualifications. The workers claimed that since the company makes use of their skills and expertise they are offering a quality service that cannot be justified by the low salaries they receive. Hilly blamed this on racial discrimination, saying that certain races are getting preferential treatment while others, although even more experienced, are treated unfairly and

remain assistant mechanics while they are more than capable to do the work. “We, the assistant mechanics, are willing to also better our chances at progressing in the company through training but the opportunities for training and study leave is only given to some employees and this is unfair and cannot be tolerated any longer,” Hilly explained. In conclusion the workers feel they saw the need to join MANWU because the union is recognised in the Engineering industry and they have had enough of the unfair treatment from Namib Diesel. The workers said they will be holding the peaceful demonstrations until their demands are met by management. When contacted for comment Frank Barusso, Managing Director of Namib Diesel said “We take note of the content of the petition delivered to our offices earlier today. The allegations of racial bias are denied in the strongest possible sense. We wish to assure all stakeholders that race plays no part in employment decisions of any kind within our company. We welcome a proper investigation into the remuneration structures of our company by any authority competent to do so.”

Political parties committed to peaceful campaigns The Erongo Regional Commander of Nampol, Commissioner Samuel /Hoebeb on Wednesday held a consultative meeting with political parties to deliberate on how pre-election campaigns can be held peacefully in Erongo region.

Commissioner /Hoebeb, commenting after the deliberations said the discussions were fruitful and he is certain there will be no violence before and during the forthcoming national elections billed to take place towards the end of the year.

“They (political parties), made the task very easy for me and we all agreed to have peaceful campaigns. We discussed how the leaders will convey the message to their supporters and there is no reason to think that there will be incidents

of violence during campaigns. Earlier at a media briefing /Hoebeb said the meeting would focus on issues like provoking each other on political or party differences, prior notification of intended political gatherings or meetings, noti-

fications of possible marches and street processes. /Hoebeb said it is paramount that parties conduct peaceful campaigns and warned that in the event of violence erupting, the due process of law will come into play.

Participate in Walvis Bay reintegration book Dorcas Mhungu

A commemorative book about the history of Walvis Bay and its integration into the Republic of Namibia (4 years after the country gained independence in 1990) was commissioned by Mayor Uillika Nambahu, and introduced at a media conference last Friday. Clr Nambahu explained that the book will not be a typical historical reference book but rather a publication, utilising the travel journal approach, which will carry narratives of the people who were involved in the integration process. Virtual Marketing has been assigned to publish the book. Project leader Thea Visser said the book will not only feature the historical and political processes but the interesting stories and personal expe-

riences many ordinary Namibians will tell, particularly during the period between Namibia’s declaration of independence in 1990 and Walvis Bay’s reintegration in 1994. “The end result will be a book that the people, not only Walvis Bay residents but any Namibian and any reader, will want to own. Being part of the story is an added bonus,” Mrs Nambahu said. She said although she respects the old-age tradition of oral dissemina-

tion of historical events, designed by the forefathers, the system is often laced with inaccuracies, exaggerations and, in some cases, fabrications. “Our approach entails telling the historical road to reintegration through people’s memories, anecdotes, stories and moments gathered from a wide spectrum of wellknown and ordinary people rather than just stating the bare facts in standard written text,” Visser said in a press statement.

Spate of accidents due to ignorance

Madelaine Laubscher Following numerous road accidents in and around Walvis Bay, statistics from the Walvis Bay Traffic Department confirm that there has been an increase in road carnage and fatalities caused by recklessness. Statistics availed by the Chief Traffic Officer, Mr Eben Platt, for the period May – June 2013 and May – June 2014 show an increase in the number of crashes as shown below. May 2013: There were 96 reported accidents. One fatality, five seriously injured and five slightly injured. May 2014: There were 108 reported accidents. One fatality, two serious injured and 13 minor injured. June 2013: There were 86 reported accidents. One fatality, five seriously injured and 10 minor injured. June 2014: There were 100 reported accidents. Two fatalities, nine seriously injured and 15 minor injured. According to Mr Platt the possible reason behind the increase in statistics is due to drivers violating traffic rules and regulations. “The attitude of the drivers is wrong and needs to be changed immediately. The spates of accidents that have been occurring are due to drunk driving, reckless and negligent driving and overspeeding. We cannot warn the drivers enough to adjust your attitudes. We are extremely worried about the rise in number of accidents that occurred recently. It is not the roads that are dangerous, but the drivers on the roads. I can also add that

these who were fined for breaking the traffic rules and regulations and ignore paying the fines should understand that if you do not pay your fine we will arrest you and no bail will be granted. Come to us before we have to come to you with a warrant for your arrest,” he said. Mr Platt advised drivers to report negligent driving immediately to prevent more deaths. He added that people who go out drinking to always get someone to drive them back home. “It is because of these drunk and negligent drivers that lives are lost and accident statistics rise. We ask for teamwork from you. Learn to have some self-control while driving your vehicle,” he said. An unknown author wrote a poem that went viral on social networks regarding the effects of reckless and negligent driving, that is sending out a very strong message to all drivers who drink and drive. “I went to a party mom, and remembered what you said. You told me not to drink mom, so I had a coke instead. I felt proud of myself mom, the way you said I would. I didn’t drink and drive mom, though some said I should. I made a healthy choice mom. Your advice to me was right. As

the party finally ended the kids drove out of sight. I got into my car mom, sure to get home in one piece. I never knew what was coming, mom, something I expected least. Now I’m lying on the pavement mom. I hear the policeman say, ‘the kid that caused this accident is drunk’. Mom, his voice seems far away. My own blood’s all around me as I try not to cry. I can hear the paramedic say, ma’am, this girl is going to die. I’m sure the guy had no idea mom, while he was flying high, because he chose to drink and drive mom, now I would have to die. Why do people do it mom, knowing that it ruins lives? Now the pain is cutting me, like 1 000 stabbing knives. Tell sister not to be afraid mom, tell daddy to be brave. When I go to heaven, put ‘Daddy’s Girl’ on my grave. Someone should have taught them mom, that it’s wrong to drink and drive. Maybe if his someone had, I’d still be alive. My breath is getting shorter mom. I’m getting really scared. These are my final moments and I’m so unprepared. I wish that you could hold me mom as I lie here to die. I wish that I could say I love you mom, so I love you and goodbye.”

Visser is appealing to everyone with links to Walvis Bay to share their story or memories of incidence or information about people who can make contributions.“If you still have an old passport with entry or exit date stamps of the erstwhile border post between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, let us know,” Visser said. As a former enclave, Walvis Bay’s history places it in a unique position, Mrs Nambahu added.

“Very few towns across the globe have a similar story to tell. This year’s commemoration of the 20th anniversary of our reintegration into Namibia offered us an opportunity to celebrate the uniqueness of this city and reveal what went on behind the scenes to facilitate this momentous event. At the same time we would like to present the feelings of ordinary ‘Baainaars’ before, during and after reintegration,” she concluded.

Namibia gears for maritime audit Dorcas Mhungu

A five day regional workshop on the implementation of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) member states audit scheme was hosted for the first time by Namibia at a local hotel in Walvis Bay.

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Mr Mathew Nangolo “We need special treatment to train these people. A national approach to this problem is crucial, Nangolo pleaded. The Mayor of Walvis Bay, in a speech read on her behalf by the Deputy Mayor, Clr Benson Uakumbua, said the port city of Walvis Bay plays an important role in maritime activities. “It is within this city that the actual performance of maritime administration is measured

against the obligations and requirements of the audit scheme and also of our country as an IMO and coastal member state.” Delegated who attended the workshop came from Angola, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritirea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, and Zambia.

He said Namibi has a cooperation agreement with Norway who assisted with technical skills and finance from 1996-2002 to establish a modern maritime administration. “Maritime skills shortage is a thorn in the flesh for Namibia and this issue must be taken as a national problem to tackle the shortage of skills,” Nangolo said. The challenge is worsened by the lack of educational busaries to sponsor students who seek fincial assistance in order to take up maritime studies. He added that the country has only three surveyors to police environment crimes yet the country needs three more.

He said the legislation in force was used by South Africa and it does not address all the maritime requirements needed to be applied by the maritime legislation. Nangolo added that it is there is a need to define clearly what needs to be put in place with regard to the maritime administration itself. Another challenge that faces the directorate was the human capacity. “There were less and less people with suitable qualifications to new maritime administration and the facilities were either few or not there

As the country prepares for a voluntary audit that is in line with the IMO member state audit scheme before the end of the year, the deputy minister of Works and Transport, Kilus Nguvauva urged the Namibian team to utilise fully, the opportunity to prepare for the audit. “I am confident that Namibia will now be able to better prepare for a full compliance with all the IMO applicable instruments leading to the White Listing which is long overdue,” he said at the official opening. Mi Casa coming to Swakop

WALVIS BAY

Piquet Jacobs

Popular South African house group, MiCasa is coming to Namibia and will give a live show at the Swakopmund Sport Grounds on 23 August. The show dubbed “A concert in the park” has set the coast buzzing with excitement, as both young and old look forward to enjoying both old school hits and brand new hits by their favourite DJ`s. Artists like Gazza, Jericho, Lil D, Midnight Jazz and Stella will also perform alongside Mi Casa. A group of DJ’s such as David, Funky Freddy, MC CoolB, Lantis, Pello, Oros and Elizinho will spin their decks and do mixes to entertain their fans. It is the first event of this magnitude for the organisers of the show, Padez Distributors. The concert will start at 15:00 till late. “We are looking forward to the event; it is something to be excited about as it is our first big show. We expect 4 000 to 5 000 people.

Tickets are going fast with Mi Casa being a big fan favourite,” commented a Padez employee, Edwin Jacobs. Mi Casa is a house band based in Johannesburg, and consists of three members, Dr. Duda (producer) and pianist, J’Something (vocalist and guitarist), and Mo-T (trumpeter). The band was formed in early 2011. A few months later, they released an album titled MiCasa Music, which “went gold” and the group won several awards at the 18th Annual MTN South Africa Music Awards in 2012. The band received a lot of attention from the public in late 2011. Their hit single “These Streets” was taken from the album MiCasa Music, which showcased the unique urban jazz sound of the band. It was not long

before the band was on every major South African radio and music video chart at number 1, where it remained for weeks. The band went on to open for a number of major international acts, including The Layabouts, Reel People, Tortured Soul, and YMCMB’s Canadian Hip Hop recording artist Drake. Their second single from the album, Heavenly Sent, also made it to every South African radio and music video chart, and earned them South African Music Awards (SAMA) nominations for “Best Dance Album”, “Album Of The Year”, “Group Of The Year”, “Newcomer Of The Year”, and “Record Of The Year”. Mi Casa’s Newcomer of the Year nomination was met with controversy when some

people mentioned that the group’s producer, Dr. Duda, was clearly not a new artist. This single was remixed by Charles Webster, marking the first international recognition for the band. The band also released their third single, “La Vida”, which included a 3-D animated music video. This track was remixed by British house producer Atjazz. In 2014, the band performed at Ultra Music Festival in South Africa on the Soul Candi stage. The music industry is nothing new to Mi Casa, the band producer, Dr.Duda has been in the industry for over fifteen years, producing and being DJ along with the likes of DJ Fresh, Dj Mandla, Dj Mbuso and making hit tracks featuring talented vocalists such as RJ Ben-jamin, JSomething and Zodwa

amongst many others. J-Something is a talented songwriter, vocalist and mastered the guitar. This sensation began reading music at the tender age of eleven and this is when he first started playing the guitar. He has also worked with a lot of producers in the past including international artists. His zest for life and music breathes energy into the band. Mo-T is the band’s trumpeter; he oozes with talent and lives his life through music. This talented young man comes from a musically rooted family and this is where the music bug bit him. His father, who established and played the trumpet for Mango Groove, taught him to play the trumpet at a young age and he has never looked back since. Source: Wikipedia

NAMA 2014 compilation cd now on sale The much anticipated NAMA 2014 compilation album has finally arrived and is now available to the public. The double compilation cd has 36 songs, and it is indeed the first time that the NAMA organisers released such an album. NAMA Executive Chairman, Tim Ekandjo said he was excited about the project and thanked all the participating artists for their willingness and support. The double cd with 18 tracks each features all winning songs in the different categories at the 2014 NAMA’s event, as well as all artists who performed on the Friday and Saturday night awards even though they were not necessarily category winners. The idea was therefore to re-live the NAMA’s 2014,

and what an perfect way to do it by having your personal copy of the NAMA’s 2014 Compilation Album featuring only the very best music for 2013/4. A promotional launch of the NAMA 2014 Compilation Album will take place in Windhoek on Friday, 1st August 2014 in Post Street Mall, opposite the Tourist Information Centre Vendors Open Space Area from 12:00 to 14:00 with the entire featuring artists on the album and a live radio broadcast by NBC radio. The artists will come out in their numbers to not only market the album but also sign autographs on the albums for fans who would

like to buy a personalised and signed copy. They printed 5 000 copies and the idea is to sell every one of them in order to go platinum with this compilation album. The album will also be available for sale at selected MTC Mobile Homes countrywide and will go for a bargain price of only N$ 150 (VAT inclusive). This project will benefit the participating artists as the NAMA organisers will not be taking a single cent from sales proceeds, but will generously share all revenues equally amongst the participating artists after production cost of the compilation album has been paid from sales.

13

They will give each artist a guaranteed N$1 500 per song on the album and this is just for having agreed to be part of this project, and this is in addition to the sales revenues they will get. They have taken the risk by putting this together, and all they have to do is market the album on every available platform because this means money in their pockets. Ekandjo encouraged the Namibian public to get themselves a copy of the NAMA Compilation Album before it runs out of stock. According to him an amount of N$150 will by you 36 of the best tracks in Namibia, an album from different Namibian ar-

tists and genres ranging from Kwaito to Oviritje, Damara punch, Traditional, House music etc. Other promotional launches are also planned countrywide. Ekandjo also appealed to institutions like the Namibia Tourism Board and other like-minded institutions to buy the album in bulk and use this as a platform to market Namibian music and with Namibia hosting the CAF competition this year this could be one way of marketing the country’s music industry by ensuring that every player of the participating nations get their personal copy of the 2014 NAMA’s compilation album.

Multi functional Nam-mic Card offers savings and cash back rewards Nam-mic Payment Solutions (Pty) Ltd was established in 2010 to offer a cost affordable transactional product called Nam-mic Card.

The Nam-mic Card is a prepaid debit card that is linked to an account, where neither the account nor the card expires. The Nam-mic

Card is a pay as you go transactional account which saves you money through low transactional fees & loyalty cash back opportunities at participating retailers like Pick n Pay, where you get 1% of your purchase value paid immediately back on your available balance with every swipe of the Nam-

mic Card for purchases. With Namibia being a predominately cash based economy, the Nam-mic Card is an innovative payment solution to help individuals & businesses save money through a safe and secure way to transact. Currently the Namibian public and transport

businesses face a specific challenge when it comes to petrol payments. With the phasing out of Petrol Cards at the end of February, many are left red-faced at the petrol pump. The Nammic Card is suitable for members of the public that wish to throw in petrol at nominated service stations which

now accept the Nam-mic Card for Fuel purchases, instead of having to carry around more cash. Being a pre-paid debit card means one can load money onto the card as they need to. When their funds are running low, they simply top up again at a participating merchant, by depositing cash at a Bank Windhoek

branch or via EFT from another Bank account. This makes the Nammic Card also suitable to receive your salary into, as the Nam-mic Card can also be used to do cash withdrawals at ATM's. Cost savings are highlighted through zero rated mobile phone transactions as well as no cash deposit fees for deposits below N$ 2000 at Bank Wind-hoek branches. You do not have to be employed to open an account, and there are no credit checks so even if one is unemployed, or has a poor credit history, they can still get a Nammic Card. When one uses your Nam-mic Card, you are spending money you have already put in your account. You will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) which you use to authorize all Card and Mobile transactions, like withdrawing cash from ATM's or to purchase goods or services at Nam-mic & Bank Windhoek merchants. For your peace of mind, your money is held safely at Bank Windhoek. You also have Mobile and Internet access to your Nam-mic Card account, and you can receive e-mail & SMS notifications of transactions keeping you in touch with what is

happening on the Nammic Card account. The Nam-mic Card is specifically beneficial to those employees that have no access to banking facilities, and many more work in temporary or seasonal positions. This allows companies to pay these employees electronically, just like the rest of the payroll that may have existing bank accounts. Nam-mic Cardholders can use the card to access their funds 24 hours a day and gives them the benefits of a debit card without the need for a bank account or the risk of spending more than the money loaded. The Nam-mic Card is also suitable for companies that require their vehicles to be able to pay for petrol at various service stations. In these instances, the Nam-mic Card operates as a Fleet Card, where it is customised to only facilitate payments and not other transactional activities. For more information, please attend our presentation at the Protea Hotel, Sam Nujoma Street in Walvis Bay on 7 August from 10h00 to 12h00. Telephonic queries can be made to 061 234 895, or by visiting our Nam-mic Offices in Swakopmund & Walvis Bay.

Ford and Partners Collect 8 Ton of Pet Food for Charities In July, Ford South Africa partnered with Complete Pet Food and the World of Dogs and Cats (WODAC) to collect over 8 ton of pet food for animal charities across the country. Driven by Ford dealers in Gauteng, the initiative sought to motivate local communities to make pet food donations at their local Dealership, and the response was overwhelming. "We didn't expect the overwhelming public support we received," said Ford South Africa's Marketing Manager, Gavin Golightly. "Although we didn't break the Guinness Book of World Records for most pet food collected, we vastly exceeded the amount we collected last year." In 2013, at the time of the World of Dogs and Cats Exhibition, Ford collected 1 ton worth of pet food from visitors to its stand. "By partnering with Complete and WODAC this year, we managed to not only collect eight times more food, but also extend the number of beneficiaries from six to 18," said Golightly. The pet food was delivered to charities selected by Complete in a series of Ford Ranger Double Cab bakkies, which were equipped with trailers, on 21 July. "This was the second year we were involved with the WODAC Exhibition, and also the second year we decided to give back to some of the amazing animal shelters in our country," concluded Golightly. "We look forward to seeing how we can exceed our own expectations again next year.”

De Duine appreciates sponsors De Duine hockey and netball teams recently received sponsorships from local companies and parents to acquire kits, water bottles and bags. Standard Bank, as well as Etosha Fishing sponsored water bottles for the girls hockey team. Herco Marketing sponsored bags, water bottles, caps, wrist bands and hockey kits. Contributions by parents and the community were also made towards the team. The u/17 super league netball team received a sponsorship for water bottles from Bank Windhoek, whilst netball dresses were sponsored by Mrs E Kalola.

The u/17 super league team is the only state school team that qualified for the super league. They are also the local league winners. Due to hard work and the effort of their coaches, they are still the best team to watch. The school expressed gratitude to Standard Bank, Etosha Fishing, Herco Marketing, Bank Windhoek, Mrs Kalola and Mrs Muatunga for their support and interest in the teams.

Three commonwealth medals guaranteed After Johanna Benson claimed the first medal for Namibia at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, when she won bronze in the para-sport long jump on Sunday afternoon, the young Lahja Ishitile added a second bronze to Namibia’s medal count at the 100m T11/12 para-sport sprint on Monday. The seventeen year old para-athlete sprinted to third place in a time of 13:38 seconds, with only Scotland’s Libby Clegg and Mozambique’s’ Maria Muchavo beating her to the line. Namibia’s visually impaired athlete had David Ndeilenga as her guide along the 100m track and joining her on the podium after their impressive run. Namibia’s latest guaranteed medal came on Tuesday evening after Junias Jonas claimed victory in the 64kg

light welter class boxing quarterfinal fight against New Zeeland’ s Leroy Hindley with an unanimous decision by the judges. This guarantees him at least a bronze medal. If he should lose in the semi-finals, he will receive a medal at a tied third position. In the semi-final Jonas’ opponent on Friday afternoon will be Northern Ireland’s Sean Duffy, with the boxing final scheduled for Saturday. Namibia’s para-sport power lifter, Ruben Soroseb, as well

Walvis Bay Golf Club results

Nikov Signs & Quick Plates – Fifty-eight mad men and women played in horrible weather last Saturday. The wind was pumping and sand was everywhere but true to the Walvis Bay spirit, everybody finished their games. Jack Jordan had a format with a difference and again the multipliers got to most of the teams. With the funny format, the expected scores were difficult to guess and with the wind it was even more difficult. Luandre Duvenhage and Pieter van Aarde were not part of any guessing however. They smacked every-

body off the course winning the day by a 10 point margin! It must be said that these two lads have been practising a lot and they play a lot, so it shows that practise makes perfect. Nikov Signs and Jack Jordan have been with the club for many years. This year Quick Plates also got into the mix and together they had great hampers up

Construction of the multimillion Indoor Sport Centre commenced late in 2012 and once completed it will be the only multi-sport complex of its kind in Africa, spanning over 7 000 m². With its five storeys it can accommodate over 40 different sport codes and supporting facilities and services. In December last year the coastal community got their first sneak peak at what the Centre can become, when a music festival was hosted in the trademarked Dome. During the first quarter of this year finishing touches were done to the Dome and sport codes started moving in. Sport Codes including Inline hockey, Gymnastics, Rhythmic gymnastics and CrossFit are settled with monthly rentals or dedicated practice times. Other sport codes interested and planning activities are Archery, Karate, Indoor action cricket and Indoor hockey. The second phase of the SISC includes the com-

mercial suites. Companies that are ready to move in are Rennies Travel, Sanmilari Kid’s Play Area, a Supplements Store, a Deli and Johanniter Hilfswerk that will run a clinic. To mark the completion of phase two the SISC will host an Open Day on Saturday, 2 August. Starting off the event the annual AREVA/SISC Fun Run will start at 08:00. During the course of the day various activities for young and old will take place. For the children there will be pony rides and jumping castles. A potjiekos competition will coincide with the Open Day and visitors to the Open Day can expect demonstrations from the Oceanview Rhythmic Gymnastics Club, the Shotokan Karate Academy, the Swakopmund Gymnastics Club, the Coastal Pirates Inline Hockey Club and CrossFit. At 14:00 they can expect Matthius Rottcher and colleagues to perform a Parachute jump. One of the main attractions

at the Open Day will be the Springbok Festival held by the Dutch Reformed (NG) Church of Swakopmund. The church aims to build a long table where a huge variety of springbok dishes will be served. A mini bazaar will also take place, with a white elephant table, cake, coffee, tea and desserts. A wine auction by the famous Beyerskloof cellar will also be part of the event. All schools and the public at large are invited to attend the Open Day to familiarise themselves with the facilities, the possibilities and opportunities that SISC can offer. Preceding the Open Day, the official Opening of the second phase will take place where invited guests will be welcomed and partake in a tour of the finished facilities. The Vision of the Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre is to be recognised internationally as a prime destination for sport and recreation programmes and events.

Chrysander heads to England Piquet Jacobs Walvis Bay’s international rugby star, Chrysander Botha, has touched ground at Sandy Park, home to the Exeter Chiefs in England – joining the team with immediate effect as of this week and being the club’s eighth signing for the upcoming 2014/15 season. The 26-year old fullback arrived in Exeter on Wednesday, following his signing for two years with Exeter Chiefs. The Chiefs’ coaching team has been tracking him for some time, and they believe he will give the Devon club another attacking weapon in their arsenal. His early arrival gives him the advantage to settle into his surroundings and to be available for pre-season friendlies against teams such as Cardiff Blues, Ulster and Worcester Warriors to get him acclimatised and in top form for the Exeter Chiefs’ Premiership Campaign with a trip to newly promoted

London Welsh on 7 September. Chrysander is motivated and positive to make an impact and up his game, whilst big things are expected of him. He also faces plenty of competition for the number 15 shirt from players such as Phil Dollman, Jack Nowell and Jack Arnott. “Chrysander is excited about the move, and is driven and enthusiastic to give only his best for the upcoming season. We trust that he will adjust easily, and we support him endlessly,” commented Mr Willie Botha, Chrysander’s proud father. Botha previously ran out

Harries Park Football Club held their prize giving event last Friday evening after completion of their first season as a fully-fledged soccer club in the Walvis Bay Third Division Soccer League. The club originated from a few friends and brothers who started playing 5-a-side soccer in 2009 at the JC Harries Park in Walvis Bay on Sunday afternoons. They were joined over the years by more players and were later known as the JC Harries Boys. They were invited to take part in the Third Division in 2013 and subsequently qualified in the play-offs. Due to a lack of facilities, the Atlantis Sport Club invited the boys to make use of Atlantis’ facilities at the Lagoon area. After their official registration in August they will be known as Atlantis Harries Park Football Club. The members of the management team were also announced on Friday evening as follows: Marlo Green(Chairman), Cyril Beukes (Coach), Luciano “Woody” Titus, Jermaine
