FESTIVAL PROGRAMME

LIFE’S TOO SHORT SO DON’T MISS OUT!

WELCOME TO THE RUSHES SOHO SHORTS FESTIVAL 2001 As many of you will already know, this is the third year of the festival and with each year it has grown to encompass more venues, attract more entries and hold more and more screenings. We were delighted to receive over 850 entries across the five categories, the quality of which was truly outstanding. We feel that we have succeeded in our aim to create a week of entertainment in the informal and relaxed environment of Soho’s bars, cafes, cinemas and screening rooms. We hope you will notice that there have been a number of developments since last year’s festival. The Curzon Cinema, as well as being a venue, is acting as our delegate centre this year, please drop by to say hello and give us your comments and suggestions about anything to do with the festival. We would also ask you to register so that we can forward you details of other events and next years’ festival. If you can’t get to The Curzon, please e-mail us at sohoshorts@rushes.co.uk. We want you to love the festival as much as we do and need your input. As well as retaining many of last year’s patrons, sponsors, venues and judges we are thrilled to have a number of new ones on board – without their time, support and generosity and, of course, the wealth of talent represented by the entries, the festival would not exist. In only three years Rushes Soho Shorts has grown into London’s premier short film and this can only have been achieved by everyone’s enthusiasm, commitment and support to the event. A really, really big thank you to everyone who has helped us. I am sorry we can’t name you all individually – but you know who you are! We hope you enjoy this year’s festival, have a great week and happy viewing! Joce Capper, Jess Bader & Paul Jones The Festival Organisers

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is the leading organisation in the UK for the film, television and interactive entertainment industries, promoting, supporting and rewarding excellence in these areas. BAF TA supports new initiatives designed to encourage and promote talent in the film industry which is why we are delighted to be associated with the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival. It is incredibly important to give film makers a platform to showcase their talents if we are to cultivate a thriving, vibrant and culturally significant UK film industry. Established talent must nurture emerging talents to help them grow and develop and carry the mantle of diverse, high quality film production. The Rushes Soho Shorts Festival is a wonderful way of bringing together new talent and film veterans to celebrate short film making. Whilst the newcomer category provides a welcome opportunity for less experienced film makers to make their mark, it is important to recognise that the short film is an artform in itself and not simply a platform for feature

making - although of course it can provide a route into that genre. In order to promote excellence in film, television, and interactive disciplines, BAFTA runs a varied programme of events at its headquarters onPiccadilly. These are open to Members and non-Members of the Academy andprovide a forum for particular industry debates as well as entertaining networking evenings and informative presentations. There are several evenings over the year devoted to the craft of short film making which are always previewed on the events page of our website - www.bafta.org. Anyone wishing to get involved in BAFTA events is welcome to contact Amy Minyard, Events and Membership Officer at BAFTA. Finally, I would like to congratulate the Rushes team who work so hard to ensure that the Festival runs smoothly. It has rapidly become an important part of the Soho film industry calendar, and it is an important and worthy contribution to talent recognition.

The Directors Guild of Great Britain is delighted to be associated for the third year with this festival that successfully supports new talent and celebrates film making. We are the only organisation in the UK representing directors in all media, at every stage of experience, from the newest recruit to our Honorary President, Peter Brook. The Guild is continually striving for better conditions, respect and remuneration to help develop the

quality of our members work. It is also launching this summer a new Directors' Training website to address the needs of professional development in the Industry and provide guidance alongside our masterclasses, panels, the Observer scheme and networking events. The Guild offers a forum to debate the state of the arts as it faces the 21st century.

The New Producers Alliance (NPA) is the national membership and training organisation for independent new producers. It provides access to contacts, information and advice regarding film production. The NPA provides a forum and focus for over 800 members, ranging from film students and first timers to highly experienced feature filmmakers, major production companies and industry affiliates. Set up eight years ago, the NPA has grown rapidly from a small network of filmmakers into a renowned and respected charitable organisation. It supports, encourages and enables new filmmakers, providing the industry with some of its brightest new talent. Recent acclaimed work by NPA members includes the feature films: Hilary and Jackie, Event Horizon, Waking Ned, The Acid House, Welcome to Sarajevo, I Could Read the Sky, Large, My Brother Tom and

Pandaemonium and the short films: Wilfred, Ain't Misbehavin' , Is it the Design on the Wrapper?, Girl in the Lay-by, That Sinking Feeling, Suave Bastard, The Caller, Diamond Lil' and To Have and To Hold. Members' work also includes documentary, animation, promos and television series The majority of services are free for members and include: specialised producer training; ongoing events, masterclasses, seminars, networking evenings, practical workshops and preview screenings; free advice services including Legal, Tax & Accountancy, Banking, Insurance, Post-production, Casting and Music; monthly newsletter and online membersπ directory. The NPA also actively lobbies on behalf of new filmmakers to ensure that they have a voice in the industry.
